Director's Message

Summer reading program is half way over already! We had a great month with the Olive Rec. Camp kids coming to the library on Thursdays. This week we learned African Dance and painted a giant fish.

The fish looks amazing! We would like some volunteers to help us "float" it around on Olive Day. It will go well with the show we have booked: The Rejuvenary River Circus by the Arm of the Sea Theater. With a grant from the Catskill Watershed Corporation we will sponsor the show at Davis Park on Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. We had them come in 2013 and they did a great show.

Olive kids have one more week of camp and then nearly a month until school starts. During the month of August we will have Fun Fridays in the afternoons which will include different fun activities for kids. Please call the library 657-2482, or email helpdesk@olivefreelibrary.org to register.

Our summer reading program has been very popular with people of all ages this year. We have been learning lots of new things and meeting new people. Our Summer Reading Closing Party will include the raffle drawing for our amazing raffle baskets. There will also be prizes for everyone who attends.

See you at the library!

Poetry Workshop:
When Poetry Comes Knocking
Poems hang out where life is." -- Susan Wooldridge

"While we often encounter poetry on the printed page or in English class, poems come alive - and make us come alive! - when we invite them into our everyday experience. In this workshop, we'll explore poetry-writing through a series of quirky prompts and creative exercises. We'll also share with you some excerpts from writers who have made us laugh, or helped us to find meaning in picking up the pen. No previous experience necessary, all are welcome. Come see where your words take you!"

Instructor
Madeline Veitch is a librarian at SUNY New Paltz. She started writing poetry in high school, where she integrated writing into performance art and printed "zines," or self-published chapbooks. These days she reads poetry every day, and writes for the joy of it. She loves root vegetables, films about nuns, and Scrabble.

Please call or email the library to preregister for this workshop.

Luscious Landscaping with
Lee Reich

What could be more pleasant than picking luscious fruits from a plant that you also admire for its beauty? Meet some of the best trees, shrubs, and vines for this purpose, plants that require little maintenance yet provide stunning flowers in spring, color in autumn, and neat form in winter.

For landscaping, the ideal is a plant that also is low maintenance, being pest-resistant and requiring little or no pruning. Luscious landscaping is the way to beautify your grounds and to put (very) local, healthful, flavorful food on the table.

Lee Reich, PhD is an avid farmdener (more than a gardener, less than a farmer) with graduate degrees in soil science and horticulture.
His books include  A Northeast Gardener's Year, The Pruning Book, Weedless Gardening, Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden, Landscaping With Fruit, and Grow Fruit Naturally. He writes regularly for a number of gardening magazines and his syndicated gardening column for Associated Press appears biweekly from coast to coast.

The library is seeking donations of snowshoes in good condition that we can lend out (just like we loan out books and ukuleles!)
