Director's Message

The last concert in the amazing Piano Plus! concert series is sure to be unforgettable. Piano soloist Maria Asteriadou will perform some of the most beautiful and challenging piano pieces ever written on Saturday, May 9 at 4 p.m.

Just in time for the warmer weather, we have a brand new picnic table made for us by Onteora High School junior and Boy Scout, Hunter Downie. Hunter donated the table in honor or Army Sergent Shawn M. Farrell II (d. 2014). Thank you Hunter!

We will have a work party on the library grounds on Monday, May 11, 5-6 p.m. with master gardener Maraleen Manos-Jones who will be working with the 4-H Foxfire group to make our pollinator garden grow. Please come and help out if you can so we can get a good start to the season, and join them on Mondays throughout the summer if you want to help. Maraleen is also known as The Butterfly Lady because of her crusade to save monarch butterflies. She is looking for a garden apprentice to help with her elaborate and beautiful home butterfly garden. Contact Maraleen if you know anyone who would like to have this hands-on learning experience.

There will be an important town board meeting on Tuesday, May 12 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall on Bostock Rd. to discuss spraying of the herbicide glyphosate along roads in the Town of Olive.

We offer a whole new movie experience with the installation of 8 new speakers, a ceiling-mounted projector and new screen. The only way to believe the quality is to come see a movie!

We currently have some wonderful artwork at the library. In the Community Room through May we have paintings by Calvin Grimm from his Deep Ocean/Deep Space series, hung in conjunction with the Piano Plus! series.  Downstairs we have oil paintings from the Olive Senior Art Class. The class meets at the Legion Hall (and sometimes at the library) on Mondays from 10-noon.

See you at the library!

By Vanessa Diffenbaugh

"A mesmerizing, moving, and elegantly written debut novel, The Language of Flowers beautifully weaves past and present, creating a vivid portrait of an unforgettable woman whose gift for flowers helps her change the lives of others even as she struggles to overcome her own troubled past.

The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it's been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings.." (Goodreads)

Come discuss this with other book lovers!
