EXPERT TESTIMONIAL
|
Dr Nils MELZER Senior Programme Advisor and Senior Fellow, Emerging Security Challenges Programme "The contemporary security environment is marked by challenges such as transnational organised crime, the introduction and proliferation of new weapons technologies, and the increasingly influential role of corporate actors. These and other trends have resulted in a growing sense of uncertainty as to the applicable legal standards which, over time, has the potential of polarizing and destabilizing the international community. My primary role within - and beyond - the GCSP's Emerging Security Challenges Programme is to work towards providing clarity and guidance in the area of security and law through research, training, and policy dialogue. One of our current focus areas is the reaffirmation of the principles of international law in relation to security operations involving cyber space and unmanned weapon systems such as drones. We also aim to contribute to the clarification of international legal standards governing counter-piracy operations, command responsibility and private security services. I feel privileged to combine my operational experience and academic expertise with the GCSP's global network and resources so as to make an effective contribution to international, national and human security." >> Related News: GCSP's Emerging Security Challenges Programme contributes to high-level security policy events on cyber security, private security services, drones and targeted killing
