The Town is currently working with a highly experienced consultant, named Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. (VHB), on possible improvements for the Route 114, Main Street and Western Avenue intersection.  VHB is being paid by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation under a program offered to towns.  The main objective is to make the intersection safer, especially for pedestrians.  The initial meeting of the process occurred on May 10th.  It was attended by town officials, related town department heads, school officials, New Hampshire Department of Transportation officials, community members and VHB.

The new ideas that were shared out of the May 10th meeting are very different from other options discussed in past years.  Previous discussions have considered widening the intersection and even the installation of a red light.  The current concepts are the opposite and include consideration for narrowing the street travel ways with sidewalk installations.  This will improve the delineation of the lanes and reduce confusion for both drivers and pedestrians.  Contemporary streetscape treatments were also part of the discussion.

In approximately a month, VHB will provide a report and some proposed plans for improvements.  This will be presented at a special public meeting, with a yet-to-be-determined date.  The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the proposals provided and to receive public input.

I encourage everyone to attend the public meeting, especially the business owners and building owners close to the intersection.  We will send out an e-mail when we have the exact date.  In the meantime, please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely

Tom Yennerell, Town Administrator

Town Water Department News

The water main flushing/fire hydrant testing is complete for this year. This will become an annual event to keep the water system healthy and to make sure that fire hydrants remain in working order should the need for them arise. In the process we discovered a few hydrants with problems. We will be repairing or replacing them as soon as possible.

The water department will be working on Western Avenue from the Liberty Hill intersection westerly to the Old Hillsboro Road intersection. We anticipate the work to begin the first week in June. The work will include replacing a fire hydrant, moving a fire hydrant, replacing failed gate valves and adjusting gate boxes. If you live in that area look for a notice in your door as to when the water service will be interrupted so that we may perform the work needed.

The water department would like to remind their water users that as summer approaches be aware of your outside water usage. Everyone wants a green lawn and a bountiful vegetable garden or beautiful flowers, but you also have to be aware of wasting water. I have already seen some lawn sprinklers running in the rain. If you have an in ground lawn irrigation system you must have a rain sensor installed and working to prevent wasting water. With the onset of hot weather the water consumption goes from 160,000 gallons per day to 350,000 gallons per day. This increase is directly related to the filling of backyard pools and over-watering of lawns, flower gardens, etc. This increase doubles the cost of pumping and treating the water.

Respectfully,

Norman Bumford

Tuesday Night Concert Series Starts 6/18

Award Winning Duo Kick Off

Summer Concerts

The Honey Dew Drops will kick-off the Henniker summer concert series on Tuesday, June 18th at 7pm.  Shows run every Tuesday night in the summer at the Angela Robinson Bandstand.

Henniker's Summer Concert Series returns on Tuesday, June 18th with The Honey Dew Drops, an acoustic duo from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia. Writing and singing folk and old country music, The Honey Dewdrops entwine harmony singing with tight instrumentation, crafting songs that are simple and fine-tuned. Theirs are new compositions from the southern mountains that ring with originality.

Winners of the 2008 Prairie Home Companion Talent Contest and finalists in the 2009 Mountain Stage New Song Contest, they have shared the stage with many Folk and Americana greats such as Carolina Chocolate Drops, Anais Mitchell, Eddie from Ohio, Anne & Pete Sibley and Robin & Linda Williams.

On stage, the Honey Dewdrops focus on blending the sounds of instruments and voices by singing and playing into a single microphone. There is a quality to the way their voices blend that is familiar, yet the mixture is unique. Their music covers the ground between hand crafted folk songs, Appalachian fiddle tunes, and a cappella spirituals. In their own way, the duo fills a room with sound and feeling that lingers long after the show is over.

During the past four years of touring full-time and playing for audiences across America, The Honey Dewdrops' down-to-earth, real-life approach to music has touched audiences broadly and brought them to high profile stages such as A Prairie Home Companion and gained them Folk Radio notoriety with two #1 albums.

The Henniker Summer Music Series is sponsored by the Town of Henniker. All concerts are free (although donations to the Town of Henniker are welcome), begin at 7:00 PM and take place at the Angela Robinson Bandstand on the grounds of Community Park, 57 Main Street in Henniker, NH.  In case of rain, we will move indoors to the Community Center. Bring a chair, spread a blanket, have a picnic supper with the kids on the lawn and join your neighbors and friends in this community-building event that makes our town such a special place.

Putting Your Business on the Digital Map

A workshop entitled "Putting Your Business on the Digital Map"  was presented by UNH Cooperative Extension's Geospatial Extension Specialist Shane Bradt, PhD  on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Simon Center of New England College in Henniker NH.  This event was offered to the public as a collaborative effort between the town's Economic Development Committee, New England College and Chamber of Commerce.

The meeting was a great success and was the largest audience that Dr. Bradt had presented to.  Dr. Bradt explained the importance of getting your business listed accurately in a variety of online databases, and gave examples of resources needed to update and manage your listing on many of the most important sites. He also noted the explosion of smart phones, which are slowly replacing laptops as people's principle electronic device.  The presentation included tips on "Helping People Find You" and "Standing Out From Others".  Dr. Bradt emphasized the need for today's businesses to be "on the digital map", otherwise your business may not be found in today's digital age.

If you were unable to attend the presentation and would like to receive email updates on how to get your business on the Digital Map, please reach out to Shane Bradt at shane.bradt@unh.edu; or Shane Bradt, Ph.D., GISP, Geospatial Extension Specialist, Natural Resources Program Team,  UNH Cooperative Extension University of New Hampshire,  Nesmith Hall 213, Durham, NH 03824, phone: 603.862.4277
