| From the Town Administrator |
Town staff, town committee members, volunteers and town officials have all been hard at work to complete all the normal activities and planning that spring and summer brings to Henniker. It's been a pleasure working with all these groups. Additionally, I'm happy to give all these people recognition and applaud all their efforts.
This is an update on the progress on Warrant Articles approved at Town Meeting. The voters approved funds for the design of the Western Avenue Bridge replacement. A contract was signed with an engineering company, Hoyle Tanner and Associates, Inc., and the early phases of design work have begun. Also an agreement was signed for $4.7 million of bridge grant funding with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. The agreement is contingent upon the approval of the Town's funding match at the 2014 Town Meeting.
Voters also approved $72,000 for a Highway Department truck refurbishment. Bids were solicited for major parts, a vendor was identified and the parts are now on order. Finally, an appropriation was approved for highway improvements at Town Meeting. Improvement locations have been solidified and bids, where appropriate, have been solicited; work will be completed this construction season.
Sincerely
Tom Yennerell, Town Administrator

Flushing the Mains, Meters & Water Turn Offs
The water department will be flushing the water mains in the coming weeks. Look for the notice in your mailbox as to the dates and what to expect when we begin.
The Water Commissioners have received three bids for the purchase and installation of the water meters. Once they have chosen the vendor they will be holding a public meeting so that those affected will have a chance to see the product and ask questions.
The Highway Department will be working on Western Avenue from Liberty Hill Road to Old Hillsboro Road and Old Hillsboro Road up to Deer Run. The water department will be replacing some of their fire hydrants and in-line gate valves within the work zone. This will require the water to be turned off during the day in those areas to get our work done. Look for notices in your door as to when this will be done.
Respectfully,
Norman Bumford, Superintendent
Cogswell Spring Water Works

Military Band Concert | Home Run Derby | Family Fun Day
Following the parade and ceremonies, head over to the Town Hall on Depot Hill Rd.
To add to the celebratory nature of its Memorial Day observations, the Town of Henniker will present a special concert by the Newmont Military Band at Town Hall, immediately following the parade and ceremonies. Following the official Memorial Day parade and observances at Community Park, the venue changes to Town Hall, where not only will the Newmont Military Band be performing, but there will be a range of activities including a bouncy house, dunk tank, chicken BBQ, Home Run Derby, and Face Painting. The Snack Shack will be open selling hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and chips. Activities and derby are sponsored by the town's Athletic Committee for Youth in collaboration with the 7th grade class fundraising team and Chamber of Commerce. For more information, please visit http://www.hennikerathletics.com/.
ABOUT THE CONCERT SERIES: The Newmont Military Band, comprised of 22 members from NH, Massachusetts and Vermont, began as a re-creation of a small-town brass band of the late 1800s. Most of the brass instruments played by the musicians in the band are originals, i.e., were either manufactured prior to, or based on, designs drawn before 1895. These brass instruments-cornets (not trumpets), alto horns, tenor horns, baritone, and tubas-have a more mellow sound than many of today's brass instruments, and they require a different level of skill to produce the sound so indicative of the old-time bands. The program is representative of the music played on town greens in the late 19th century. It was borrowed from the archives of the American Band of Claremont, New Hampshire. There are songs of "the war," songs of love, marches (including Sousa's!), dances, and songs from the old plantations. Musical selections are chosen from American Band and Windsor Military Band programs documented in the Claremont Advocate and the Vermont Journal between the years of 1890 and 1905.
"We wanted to kick off the Summer Concert Series with a real old time feel, much like that of the Band concerts Angela Robinson organized for three decades, " noted Henniker Concert Committee chair, Ruth Zax. "What better way to do that than present a Memorial Day concert featuring music from the early part of the 20th century?"
The official summer concert series will begin on Tuesday, June 18th with the Honey Dew Drops, an acoustic duo from Virginia. The entire summer schedule will be posted at www.henniker.org. For more information, contact rbzax@comcast.net

| Volunteers Needed for New Trails Committee |

Selectmen Authorize Establishment
of Trails Committee
Volunteers Needed
At the request of the Economic Development Committee (EDC), the Board of Selectmen has authorized the establishment of a Trails Committee made up of seven members of the community.
Background:
The primary goal of the EDC is to support and expand economic opportunities in the community, including promoting our vast outdoor natural resources and beauty. The EDC held a business forum last year and one of the comments received was that Henniker has numerous trails but lacks one resource that details their location. In addition, there is no web-based resource for this information, a major drawback in today's environment. In order to expand and promote this asset in the community, which can lead to increased tourism activity and its associated benefits, the EDC suggested the creation of a Henniker Trails Committee to coordinate the many resources available regarding the existing trail network in the community and regionally.
Goals:
Review documents such as: The Open Space Trails System Plan, Rotary's Outdoor Guide, Henniker Trail Travelers map, USGS maps, Town Road map, Regional Planning maps and any other available resources to make a comprehensive trail map of the community that would be available to the general public. The trail map should highlight trails that may be used for a variety of users including hiking, snowmobile riding, ATV, etc. The final map should be made available in both printed form and on the town's website. Any trails shown shall have the permission of the property owners. The Committee is encouraged to reach out to the community to obtain input and assistance in achieving its goals.
