Conservation Land Project FinishedConservationLand

The Henniker Conservation Commission is pleased to announce the completion of a year-long project to conserve two important areas of town-owned land.  The first area, protected with a conservation easement held by the Piscataquog Land Conservancy, is the Colby Little Brook forest off Colby Hill Road.  This remote 112 acre parcel has wonderful wildlife habitat and sits between two other conserved properties providing a protected wildlife corridor for the future of close to 500 acres.

The other, an easement encompassing three lots held by Five Rivers Conservation Trust, protects 75 acres of scenic land along two sides of Warner Road.  This area is distinguished by wetlands and large rock outcrops covered in spectacular sheet lichen.  The easement protects a portion of Brown Brook and ensures that future generations of Contoocook Valley ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) Riders will be able to enjoy the existing trail that runs across the southern lot.  The Warner Road easement, which incorporates the Preston Memorial Forest at its center, will be called the Watman Conservation Area in honor of the late Henniker Selectman Tom Watman who was instrumental in gaining town support for the project.

Both projects are funded by the town's Conservation Fund.  Following the vote in support of the project at last year's town meeting, the Conservation Commission found land trusts interested in holding the easements, had the lots surveyed, and shepherded the project through to the final signing of documents and transfer of funds to the town.   Along the way the Commission received tremendous assistance from the Highway Department crew who dismantled and hauled away several cabins, outbuildings and derelict vehicles from the lots and the Transfer Station Crew who recycled as much of the metal as possible and disposed of the rest of the debris.  Additional assistance came from John Stark students Garrison Gage and Mike Caplan who assisted in painting the boundary lines of all 4 lots.
