Highway Dept. Truck MakeoverTruckMakeover

We are fortunate that our Road Agent had the vision and that the Highway Department team had the skill to bring an old U.S. Air Force recovery "winch" truck back to life for Henniker road maintenance.  In March 2012, Carl Knapp purchased a 1993 (model year) 10-wheel Freightliner all-wheel drive dump truck from Federal Surplus, where used military equipment is made exclusively available to other government agencies.  With 40,000 actual miles from its time stationed in Germany, the truck came with over $7,000 worth of new tires at a purchase price of $8,500.

Over the summer, and in between normal work duties, the Highway Department gave the truck a full makeover, putting it on the road this past October.  This new truck will replace a severely rusted 6-wheel 2000 Freightliner that was almost two years past due to be replaced by CIP (Capital Improvement Program) funds.  When all was said and done, the final truck, fully made over with a recycled plow, would have cost the town about $240,000 new.  The Henniker Highway Department put $55,000 into the whole deal, using only in-house labor.

A big thanks goes out to Road Agent Carl Knapp and Town Mechanic Brian Weikel for all the planning, fabricating, welding, hydraulic work, painting, wiring and detail work.  And thanks to the rest of the crew for helping to complete this package.  We look forward to many years of use on our Henniker roadways.

We need caring people who can help distribute food on Wednesday evenings once every 6 weeks for an hour.  You will be part of a team of great people helping their community!  There are other activities as well if those hours don't work for you.  Please call Denise Getts at (603) 494-9675 to inquire!

Dear Town of Henniker,

The Henniker Food Pantry gave out 76 boxes of food for the Thanksgiving Distribution!  That is the most we have ever done and without the help and generosity of the residents of Henniker, it would not have happened!  Thanks to all who were able to donate food, money or their time to make it a success!

The Christmas Distribution, which will be on December 19th, will be just as big - so if you are able to donate for that it will be much appreciated.  We will need more bags of potatoes, carrots, onions, coffee, pancake mix or syrup.  Drop-offs at the Tucker Free Library or at the Harvester Market.

Thanks to all the great people of Henniker!!

CNHRPC Seeks Your Ideas for the Central New Hampshire Regional Plan NH Regional Planning Commission

The Central New Hampshire Regional Planning Commission (CNHRPC) has begun the process to develop an updated regional Master Plan, entitled the Central New Hampshire Regional Plan: A Granite State Future. This Plan will be based upon local values and needs that together present a vision for how we can improve our communities, region, and the state. The Central New Hampshire Regional Plan will be an advisory document that communities may use as a resource when updating their own municipal Master Plans.

This three-year project is part of a statewide effort by all nine New Hampshire Regional Planning Commissions (RPCs) known as A Granite State Future. Each RPC is responsible for developing its own Regional Plan. Throughout the state, communities and regions continually address issues such as land use, transportation, economic development, housing, energy, and natural resources. Every regional Master Plan developed under A Granite State Future can serve as a resource to communities when they are making decisions related to such issues.

To gain a better understanding of this region's values and needs, CNHRPC will be undertaking public engagement activities from this fall through next summer 2013. From all residents, workers, and visitors in Central New Hampshire, CNHRPC wants to learn what people like about their community and what could make their community even better. Outreach will occur at various local events and venues, and also includes collecting ideas through the "listening boxes" placed in each community and working with numerous local and statewide partners on Advisory Teams. Ideas and comments can alternatively be submitted any time on the Granite State Future website at www.granitestatefuture.org.

Please look for the listening box in your community (at Town Hall, the Library, or other frequently visited places) and fill out a comment card describing what you love best about the area or your community and what you want to improve. If you don't see the listening box, go to www.granitestatefuture.org and click on "Share Your Idea."

For more information on what CNHRPC is currently coordinating for the Central New Hampshire Regional Plan through A Granite State Future, please contact Stephanie Alexander at 226-6020 or salexander@cnhrpc.org.

Tips on Keeping Your Business Safe from Theft

From Trident, Town of Henniker's provider for Property & Liability Insurance through Davis & Towle Insurance

  • Closing protocols should be developed to ensure that all exterior openings have been properly secured.
  • Shrubbery and landscaping plants and trees should be reviewed to determine if they need to be trimmed or removed. They may provide a measure of cover for unauthorized entry. Trees near buildings can also be used to climb up to second floor areas where unauthorized entry might be easier.
  • Items of value that may be attractive to burglars, such as digital cameras, laptops and other small electronic devices should be locked inside desks or other secure areas.
  • Consider key control. Are office keys, master keys, safe keys and vehicle keys lying about? Do you know to whom your keys have been issued or entrusted? If management cannot answer these questions, your security risk factor is very high.
  • Keep a record of all keys issued. Master keys and extra duplicates should be locked away for safekeeping. When a particular key is needed, everyone must sign for its use.
  • Have all keys stamped with the words "do not duplicate.'
  • Alert the town Police department of the recent theft/burglary activity and advise them to provide increased patrolling of the property.
  • Consider the installation of a 24 hour monitored security system that goes to a central station or local police department. Businesses without alarm systems are 4.5 times more likely to be burglarized than commercial locations with electronic security in place.
