Michael Savage Says Russian Soldiers To Be In Charge with Fema New Law Passed
 | M. Savage: Russian soldiers will be put on U.S. soil to provide security at mass events (07/01/2013) |
At a time when President Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin appear to be clashing over the extradition of Edward Snowden, it's hard to imagine signing an agreement that allows Russian troops to provide security at events on US soil... but that's exactly what the Obama Administration did recently.
According to an agreement signed in Washington, DC last week between FEMA and the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, Russian troops can now be deployed to provide security at so-called "National Special Security Events," such as the Super Bowl and G8 summits.
This is a perfect example of the smoke and mirrors tactic that the Obama Administration has been using throughout his presidency. Their motto is: "Never let a crisis go waste."
In this case, they're simply using the NSA crisis to distract Americans as they adopt disastrous measures to weaken American sovereignty.

Loophole reportedly allows immigrants to use 'key words' to cross border
FoxNews.com | Published August 11, 2013
Hundreds of Mexican immigrants are being allowed across the U.S. border in San Diego by giving "key words and phrases" to border officials, MyFoxPhoenix reports citing unnamed sources.
The station reports just last Monday about 200 people crossed the border claiming there was a "credible fear" of drug cartels.
"They are being told if they come across the border, when they come up to the border and they say certain words, they will be allowed into the country," the source tells MyFoxPhoenix.com. "We are being overwhelmed."

Jon Stewart, War Criminals & The True Story of the Atomic Bombs (Aug. 7, 2011)
Originally broadcast on May 7, 2009, PJTV brings this classic Afterburner out of the vault for the anniversary of atomic bombings against the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Jon Stewart gets his facts wrong about America's use of the Atomic bomb in World War 2. Should Harry Truman have been prosecuted as a war criminal? Whittle takes you back to those fateful days and tells you the facts about the history altering decisions to drop two Atomic bombs on Japanese cities.

Hiroshima's Lessons for the War on Terror
August 9, 2013 By Daniel Greenfield
In the summer of '45, the United States concluded a war that had come to be seen by some as unwinnable after the carnage at Iwo Jima, with a bang.
On August 6th, the bomb fell on Hiroshima. And then on the 9th, it was Nagasaki's turn. Six days later, Japan, which had been preparing to fight to the last man, surrendered.
For generations of liberals, those two names would come to represent the horror of America's war machine, when they actually represented a pragmatic ruthlessness that saved countless American and Japanese lives.
There can hardly be a starker contrast to our endless unwinnable nation-building exercises than the way that Truman cut the Gordian Knot and avoided a long campaign that would have depopulated Japan and destroyed the lives of a generation of American soldiers.
That we can talk about Japan as a victory is attributable to that decision to use the bomb. Without it, Japan would have been another Iraq or Vietnam, we might have won it at a terrible cost, but it would have destroyed our willingness to fight any future wars and would have given the USSR an early victory in Asia.
Professional soldiers understand the humanitarian virtue of ruthlessness. The pacifist civilian may gasp in horror at the sight of a mushroom cloud, but the professional soldier knows that the longer way around would have left every Japanese city looking far worse than Hiroshima.
More people died in the Battle of Okinawa on both sides than in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 9 out of 10 buildings were destroyed. As much as a third of the island's population committed suicide, fled into caves that were bombed, were used as human shields and were killed when American soldiers found themselves unable to distinguish between Japanese soldiers posing as civilians and actual civilians.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GODS AND GENERALS AND GETTYSBURG COMES THE LIBERTY MOVIE OF THE YEAR
RON MAXWELL'S COPPERHEAD
For anyone who reveres and believes in the preservation of the Constitution of the United States, Copperhead is a must see this summer!
Copperhead is unlike any Civil War movie to date. It is a film of the war at home - of a family ripped apart by war, of a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime. A story of the violent passions and burning feuds that set ablaze the homefront during the Civil War, Copperhead the movie is also a timeless and deeply moving examination of the price of dissent, the place of the individual amidst the hysteria of wartime, and the terrible price of war - a cost measured not in dollars but in fractured families, broken loves, and men dead before their time.
Based on the extraordinary novel by Harold Frederic, who witnessed these conflicts firsthand as a small child, Copperhead tells the story of Abner Beech, a stubborn and righteous farmer of Upstate New York, who defies his neighbors and his government in the bloody and contentious autumn of 1862.

COMMON CORE:
WHAT'S IN STORE FOR OUR CHILDREN?
We'd like to extend a special invitation for you to attend an open meeting covering Common Core
hosted by the Coaltion for Advancing Freedom:
Tuesday, August 13, 2013
The Red Clay Room, 423 Dalmatian Street, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, 19348, USA
Doors open at 6:00pm. Program begins promptly at 6:45pm.
We encourage you to invite your friends and neighbors, teachers and PTO members, for this important program featuring two engaging subject-matter experts, Whitney Neal and Dr. Peg Luksik, followed by a Question & Answer Session.
Part 1- A Rigorous Assessment
Speaker: Dr. Peg Luksik Former candidate for PA Governor and US Senate
* * * * *
The first part of the evening will be a presentation by nationally-known education expert Dr. Peg Luksik, who will speak about the Common Core education standards and how they will affect you and your family. She'll cover what it is, how it came to be, why you may never have even heard of it, and why it is not a good idea for the children of Pennsylvania.
Part 2 - Making Education 'Common'
Speaker: Whitney Neal Director of Grassroots - FreedomWorks
* * * * *
In the second part of the program, grassroots activist and former 8th Grade U.S. History teacher Whitney Neal, will cover how the Common Core's 'homogenized' approach treats every child exactly the same, regardless of their individual needs, strengths, or career goals, and how this untested program can only result in a consistent standard of mediocrity.
Part 3 - Question & Answers
What We Can Do: As Parents, Teachers, School Board Members and Administrators
* * * * *
The third part of the evening will be a Question & Answer Session focused on what we can do. Especially because, to date, we parents, teachers, PTOs and PTAs, school boards, administrators, and concerned citizens have had no say in the matter.
The Federal Government effectively 'bribed' the State apparatus to adopt the Common Core using federal stimulus money, and they did so 'behind the scenes' without any significant public debate. There hasn't been any means testing to ensure that the standards are successful in the classroom. Finally, only 1 out of 60 content experts who reviewed the Common Core were teachers, and no proof was provided that their feedback was received, or their changes reflected in the final standards.
Twitter handle for use before, during, and after the August 13 program: @CAF4PA Please RSVP HERE ASAP so that we have a good attendance estimate. Feel free to invite those that you know need to hear more about Common Core. And please note that Moms are the constituency aligning most against it.

Our Next Meeting will educate you about the dangers of Common Core
Common Core is on hold for now, however it can be implemented at anytime
Quietly without notice, Common Core has started to be implemented in many states. Common Core significantly erodes local and state control of the school curriculum. This was a large part of the 2009 stimulus package. It is a bureaucratic, top-down nightmare heavily influenced by special intrest.
Where: The Standard Club 127 E State Street Doylestown Pa 18901 Website: https://www.facebook.com/TheStandardClub When: Wednesday August 28th Time: 7pm

Guy Rodgers,
Executive Director for ACT! for America,
to speak in Elmer, NJ
It is my privilege to invite you to a special event featuring Guy Rodgers, Executive Director of ACT! for America. This event is free and open to the public and will be held at the following location:
|
Elmer Grange Hall 535 Daretown Road Elmer, NJ 08318 Tuesday, September 3rd at 7 pm
|
Guy has been my right hand since I founded ACT! for America in 2007. He is a compelling, dynamic public speaker who combines a deep knowledge of the threat of radical Islam with nearly three decades of strategic and communications experience in the political world. The result is extraordinary-and something you don't want to miss. The Boston Marathon bombing was a painful reminder that the threat of jihad is always lurking just beneath the surface. Unfortunately, we can't just wish it away or turn a blind eye to it. Whether that threat is the violent kind of jihad we saw in Boston or on 9/11, or the "stealth" kinds of jihads that is the primary weapon of the Muslim Brotherhood, we must be informed and have the tools with which to fight it effectively. Here are just some of the aspects of this threat Guy will discuss:
- The worldwide effort to muzzle free speech-and how our own government is assisting this effort.
- Homegrown jihad.
- Terrorists infiltrating our borders.
- The Muslim Brotherhood and creeping sharia law in America.
- Pro-Islamic bias and indoctrination in our public school textbooks.
| But perhaps even more importantly, you will learn how ACT! for America is successfully rolling back the tide of radical Islam...how we are winning legislative victories...how we don't have to live in fear or resign ourselves to the inevitability of the threats arrayed against us...and how we will prevail. I encourage you to forward this email to everyone you know. I know you will leave this event not only educated, but inspired. So please come and invite your friends to this ACT! for America event in Elmer, NJ, on Tuesday, September 3rd. You'll be glad you did. Yours for a Safe and Free America, Brigitte Gabriel

In the wake of the Supreme Court's marriage decisions, the movement to uphold America's core principles heads to the states, where challenges to state laws and local communities' religious liberties will surely open up in coming months.
How can citizens strategize and get the tools to effectively make the case for life, marriage, and religious liberty? Are conservative groups working together? Get the answers at Values Voter Summit 2013 >>
On October 11-13, Values Voter Summit 2013 will bring together thousands of Americans to tackle issues impacting our freedoms, families, national security, and values. This year's theme, Standing for Faith, Family and Opportunity for All, celebrates how following America's founding principles provides all Americans more freedom and better lives.
Leading voices in public policy and culture will address the summit, notably Senator Ted Cruz, former Governor Mike Huckabee, Rep. Steve King, columnistStar Parker, Senator Rand Paul, Live Action president Lila Rose, former Senator Rick Santorum, Todd Starnes of Fox News, and many more. Heritage president Jim DeMint will deliver a keynote address to the leaders gathered, expected to be broadcast live on C-SPAN. His talk will touch on the importance of marriage and upward mobility, themes further developed in breakout sessions featuring Heritage experts.
In "Responding to the Tough Questions on Marriage, Religious Liberty, and More," Heritage's Jennifer Marshall, along with Adèle Keim of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, will tackle tough questions conservatives often hear, such as "Isn't it pro-family to expand who can get married?" and "Do conservatives care about the poor?"
Heritage will also host "How America Provides Opportunity for All: Stories and Solutions" to explore the truth of upward mobility in America. Matthew Spalding, author of We Still Hold These Truths, and Bishop Shirley Holloway, founder ofHouse of Help/City of Hope, will reveal how government redistribution runs counter to our Founders' wisdom and what the real solutions are to breaking the cycle of poverty. Get more details on breakout sessions >>
Students are also a vital part of this year's event. They will have exclusive opportunities to interact with speakers, including a Friday night mixer. In a casual interactive setting, Ryan Anderson of Heritage-famed for his CNN face-off with Piers Morgan-and the Family Research Council's Peter Sprigg will help young adults develop intellectually honest answers to what friends are asking on sexuality, relationships, and why marriage matters.
Between sessions, all attendees can receive complimentary materials and speak directly with dozens of conservative groups, including Christians United for Israel, Liberty Counsel, Students for Life, Leadership Institute, and Let Freedom Ring. From a trusted friend:
As some of you may know, I am associated with Coventry Christian Schools as a parent of a graduate (2010) and as member of the Board of Trustees. Last October we spent a wonderful evening honoring Mark Niehls at our revitalized Founder's Dinner and celebrated our shared heritage in the remarkable community that is Coventry Christian Schools. Our vision for future Founder's Dinners is to inspire and inform not only our alumni and current CCS families but to inspire and inform the Tri-County Area and even our region by hosting speakers and artists who can uniquely assist us in celebrating the heritage, core values, and mission of CCS while also lifting our vision for an even greater future built upon the foundation of our past. The caliber of our speakers and guest artists should provide us with wonderful opportunities to share our CCS story with new partners in Christian education. Proceeds from the dinner will be applied to our annual Coventry Kids Fund for CCS scholarships.
This year we are proud to announce that our distinguished guest and speaker is Dr. Benjamin Carson, and our dinner's theme is "Faith of Our Fathers: The Role of Faith in American Schools." Please join us as we welcome Dr. Carson to the Tri-County Area and celebrate the great things God is doing at CCS!
Dr. Carson is a highly regarded neurosurgeon and motivational speaker who has addressed various audiences across the country. He is one of the most honored and recognized physicians in the world and holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees along with hundreds of awards and citations. He is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He is the author of five books and is the founder of the Carson Scholars Fund. The 2009 award-winning movie entitled Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Carson, premiered on TNT and is based on his memoir. Dr. Carson is an authentic disciple of Christ, has been married to his wife Candy for more than 37 years, and is the father of three sons.
The 2013 Founder's Dinner, which will once again be a part of our Homecoming festivities, will be held at the historic Sunnybrook Ballroom in Pottstown on Sunday, October 13th, 2013. Doors will open at 4:30pm, followed by dinner at 5:15. Dress will be business/professional. Tickets will be priced at $100 until May 15th, then will be $125, so reserve your tickets for the reduced price.
Due to Dr. Carson's international reputation and recent prominence in the media, including his recent speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, we fully anticipate that this event will sell out quickly once advertised to the public. Tickets go on sale to the public April 15. If you are interested in attending, tickets can be purchased online. I will send the link out to those who wish to go on April 15
th
. While online reservations are preferred because they facilitate efficient event planning, you may also complete a paper order form, which I can forward to you as well.
All of us at Coventry Christian Schools, look forward to sharing this very special evening with you and acquainting you with the school and its mission!
Blessings,
Christine Gordon

Dear FrontPage Reader, Each year, we invite the nation's leading conservative lawmakers, thinkers, and writers to join us in Palm Beach, Florida, for the David Horowitz Restoration Weekend. Held at The Breakers-one of the most beautiful resorts on the east coast-this retreat offers an unparalleled opportunity to relax and renew our dedication to our conservative values and preserving liberty. This year's Restoration Weekend, which will be held November 14-17, promises to be the greatest yet. Dr. Ben Carson, Monica Crowley, Richard Grenell, David Horowitz, and Steve Moore are already confirmed to speak and we expect to add many more great conservatives to this list as we get closer. I won't lie-attending the weekend is not cheap. And I know this has deterred many people throughout the years. That's why the Freedom Center will be covering all the costs for a lucky supporter and their guest to attend-roundtrip airfare, three nights at The Breakers, and admission to all of the retreat's programs, meals, and activities. Donate $5 today to be entered to win an all expenses paid trip to Palm Beach for the David Horowitz Restoration Weekend. This special offer won't last long. We'll be selecting the winners on August 31-so make sure to enter today. Thanks, Michael Finch COO, David Horowitz Freedom Center

WHAT IS COMMON CORE?Common Core, or the Common Core State Standards Initative (CCSSI), as it is known at the State and Federal level, is a set of national education standards that will fulfill the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, through a waiver system. (The NCLB Act was put into place by Congress in 2001 and signed into law by President George W. Bush). Many states were failing to meet the NCLB Act requirements and, therefore, wanted something to replace NCLB.Common Core is part of the UN's plan for complete federal control over our education systems and the "Dumbing-down" of America. Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) are not state standards in the first place, and are nothing more then further federalization of our state education systems. COMMON CORE IS A TROJAN HORSE AND TIED TO THE UNITED NATIONS (UN)If you cannot see that Common Core is tied to the United Nations you have not done your homework! The major funder of the Common Core Movement is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which has pledged $60 million dollars to this effort. Bill and Melinda Gates are tied to UN through-and-through and have spent money in America and overseas for UN programs in Africa and all over the world for decades. From the Conservative Teachers of American organization, they wrote an article entitled: "Common Core Standards and the Federalization of Education." In this article we read: "Many are concerned that the Common Core Standards, once successfully implemented, will provide unfettered access of our educational system by the United Nations. Some textbooks and curricula for our public schools have already been written by the [United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization] UNESCO and the International Baccalaureate program, that is currently in many school districts, across the United States. Grabbing additional access is a natural next step. Once they write the curricula, they must have authority to develop all testing tools."
The UN involvement in the American educational system has already been facilitated by treaties signed by American presidents from both parties. Those documents include but are not limited to: Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Treaty on the Rights of the Child, Civic Education: Classroom Connections, and Agenda 21. The US Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development (since 2003), is the nexus of the UNA-USA and Global Leadership Coalition at the Department of Education, which altogether leverages the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014. UNESCO, the lead agency of the Decade, defines Education for Sustainable Development as "education for everyone everywhere" for the "lifelong learning" of "present and future generations". The UNA-USA sponsors Model UN across America and tailors its Global Classrooms curricula to whichever setting the kids happen to be participating. Children are unknowingly trained to respond with prescribed consensus to the situations, simulations and stimulation's of the particular activity (Delphi Technique). Global Kids is the CFR arm of Connect All Schools Consortium, a new Department of Education network, led by Independent Sector and The White House via United Planet Partners. Global Kids is preparing children for Agenda 21. The White House, NSA and CIA now have website divisions aimed at kids. The Public Education Network is a national association funded by Independent Sector donors: plus Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Department of Education "Funders" of the Rockefeller Foundation-backed International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), "Members" of the the Sustainability Consortium, backed by the EPA and BSR (Rockefeller Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, State Department) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-backed International City/County Management Association (ICMA): Center for Sustainable Communities (an ICLEI "Partner") are "partnered" with local schools and governments. From the Partnership for 21st Century Skills aligning the Common Core State Standards with "professional development" content for teachers and principals and Lego Robotics curricula for students (Carnegie Mellon/Lego Education); to software curricula through websites like: cyberschoolbus.un.org, icivics.org, atomiclearning.com, renlearn.org, brainpop.com and ttl4.sunburst.com; to the weekly deliveries of Time for Kids magazine and textbook curricula into classrooms; kids are programmed with UN-defined values. State Governors administer Federal funds to "Community-Oriented Policing" systems like Crime Stoppers (The UN, FBI and other law enforcement and corporate partners administer Crime Stoppers International), the local student-equivalent of the Department of Homeland Security's' "See Something, Say Something" campaign; whereby children see hand-drawn posters of child characters on school walls displaying "Eyes Looking", "Ears Listening", "Mouth Reporting" with a hotline to call. Presidents Bush and Obama have personally followed the George H. W. Bush/Clinton trail of the Agenda 21/ Sustainable America megabanks-maze in "bipartisan" fashion. UNESCO PLEDGES SUPPORT OF COMMON COREFrom UNESCO's document "The Vision of Education Reform in the United States" it states: "My department has been pleased to partner with the US Agency for International Development to help ensure that our best domestic practices are shared world-wide. The United States provides over a billion dollars annually to partner countries working on educational reform. Our goal for the coming year will be to work closely with global partners, including UNESCO, to promote qualitative improvements and system strengthening....Ultimately, education is the great equalizer. It is the one force that can consistently overcome differences in background, culture, and privilege." THE UN'S AGENDA 21- COMMON CORE IMPLEMENTER!In the United Nations Agenda 21 (Guide for the 21st Century), Chapters #25 and #36 specifically talk about education of our children: Principle #25- "Children and Youth in Sustainable Development." In the "Activites 25.9.d" it states: "Ensure access for all youth to all types of education, wherever appropriate, providing alternative learning structures, ensure that education reflects the economic and social needs of youth and incorporates the concepts of environmental training, implementing innovative methods aimed at increasing practical skills, such as environmental scouting." Principle #36- "Promoting Education, Public Awareness and Training." In the Activities Section of this document in "36.5.g" we read: "Within two years the United Nations system should undertake a comprehensive review of its educational programmes, encompassing training and public awareness, to reassess priorites and reallocae resources. The UNESCO/UNEP International Environmental Education Programme should, in cooperation with the appropriate bodies of the United Nations system, Governments, non-governmental organizations and others, establish a porgramme within two years to integrate the decisions of the Conference into the existing United Nations framework adapted to the need of the educators at different levels and circumstances. Regional organizations and national authorities should be encouraged to elaborate similar parallel programmes and opportunies by conducting an analysis of how to mobilize different sectors of the population in order to assess and address their environmental and development education needs." In the Activities Section of this document in "36.5 h" we read: "There is a need to strengthen, within five years, information exchange by enhancing technologies and capacities necessary to promote environment and development education and public awareness. Countries should cooperate with each other and with the various social sectors and population groups to prepare educational tools that include regional environment and development issues and initiatives, using learning materials and resources suited to their own requirements." Sounds just like PARCC and SLDS. ASU's Institute for Global Sustainability and their "Sustainable Cities Network" is doing a fine job "brain-washing" our students in our high schools on sustainability, global warming (aka climate change), etc. Go here to meet the ASU sustainability schools! COMMON CORE SCIENCE STANDARDS TEACH GLOBAL WARMING!The new Common Core Science Standards that are up for review teach Global Warming (aka Climate Change)! Here is Research and Commentary on the Common Core Science Standards" from The Heartland Institute.
Please spread the word to all AMERICAN PATRIOTS!
Reality Check.....COMMON CORE EDUCATION = COMMUNISM IN AMERICA!
Common Core Education is the INDOCTRINATION of our CHILDREN. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE GOP ESTABLISHMENT RHETORIC FROM MIKE HUCKABEE!!!
Reality Check- just in case you ever had a doubt......MIke Huckabee is a typical GOP Establishment person.
Mike Huckabee is now championing Common Core Education on Fox News for the GOP! How disgusting is that?!?!? "Mike Huckabee Urges Conservatives to Back Common Core Standards"
This is another reason why Constitutional Conservatives MUST leave the GOP and beware of what you hear on Fox News. Fox News continues to move to the left - to the liberal progressive side of issues. That is the very very sad but true fact. Mr. GOP Huckabee....."It's disturbing to me there have been criticisms of these standards directed by other conservatives including the RNC," Huckabee wrote. "The truth of the matter is, these criticisms are short-sighted." see attached article from Sunshine News. Send a message to Mr. GOP Huckabee at http://www.mikehuckabee.com/masterfeedback and send a loud message to the every more liberal progressive Fox News! Americans that believe in our Constitution must not be silent about this! Do NOT let Fox News get away with promoting the very liberal progressive Common Core Education that promotes the ideology that American Children are Common/Community Property! Do NOT let Fox News get away with promoting the loss of state's rights and the federal government taking over Education. WE NEED TO ABOLISH THE FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - NOT EMPOWER IT! If you support SOCIALISM AND COMMUNISM FOR THE U.S.A. then COMMON CORE EDUCATION IS FOR YOU. If you believe in the U.S.A. CONSTITUTION....then YOU WILL LOUDLY AND OPENLY REJECT AND OPPOSE COMMON CORE EDUCATION AND ANYONE THAT PROMOTES IT!! Common Core Education is the indoctrination of American Children. This is NOT acceptable if you still believe in FREEDOM!! Sally Baptiste www.blogtalkradio.com/americanstatesman
The proponents of Common Core say that the standards ARE state led because they were developed by The National Governors' Association.
Well, perhaps this is true in a way that is very disturbing! Listen to this speech at the 1989 NGA conference on education (at 12:48).

The video says this is a clip from the 1989 National Governors'Assoc conference on Education: Sr. Director of Mid-Continental Regional Education Laboratory, Dr. Shirley McCune She says about education: #1) Total transformation of our society #2) Teaching of facts and information (knowledge) is no longer the primary purpose of education #3) Close connection between economic (sustainable) development and human capitol (human resource labor for a planned economy) A group that allowed this kind of rhetoric to be said at their meeting? I don't think I want them developingeducational standards! Please read to the bottom for transcripts from the 1987 NGA meetings chaired by Bill Clinton. These transcripts are eye-opening. They are clearly more concerned with workers for the manufacturing. They seem to have concerns that we have students who can't read well enough (non-English speaking especially) to function in the manufacturing plants, and then on the other end of the spectrum... too many with higher ed degrees who don't WANT to work in the manufacturing. So... what to do about all this? Hummm.... standards! Make sure they read well enough to function as the industrial workers, but not so well that they don't want to!!! This is the John D. Rockefeller goal of the early 20th century when he started pushing for compulsory government schooling and funding the building of government schools.
NOW.... review the transcripts below of the conferences chaired by Bill Clinton: National Governor's Association website (find all annual meetings here with transcriptsm- ) 1986-87 NGA Chair Gov. Bill Clinton's Initiative Making America Work: Productive People, Productive Policies March 25, 1986 1987 Winter Meeting with Bill Clinton as chair, you will find on page 12 that the governors unanimously adopted a policy to adopt an INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY. http://www.nga.org/files/live/sites/NGA/files/pdf/1987NGAWinterMeeting.pdf 1987 Annual meeting. See page 34of this document to see how those governors seem to be concerned that we aren't training our students for the "workforce." They are concerned that the professors of higher ed are telling students to strive for more than the job of working in the manufacturing plants. On page 40 they start talking about standards needed in education. " See page 42 with this statement by Governor Sinner (great name!) to Lee Iacoccoa: "But you also made a point about the terrific cost to industry of the disparity between states in these regulations and I wondered, with all the fuss and the furor that we make over states' rights...." http://www.nga.org/files/live/sites/NGA/files/pdf/1987NGAAnnualMeeting.pdf June 11, 2013: Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) leads the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee in a markup of the Strengthening America's Schools Act of 2013, an education initiative to replace No Child Left Behind. http://www.c-spanvideo.org/event/220036 At the June 10 Common Core forum in Fayette County, Superintendent Barge stated over and over again that if Georgia wants to change these standards at any time, we have the ability to do so. The testimony below contradicts this belief by Superintendent Barge and confirms that states who adopted the Common Core standards DO NOT have the ability to change the standards in any way on their own. 2:23:00 - Rep. Tim Scott discusses his amendment to Harkin's bill. Instead of states being forced to adopt blanket standards like Common Core as a prerequisite for funding, let's put decision-making back in the hands of parents and teachers in our communities." 2:31:00 - It is admitted that states who want to change the CC standards, the Secretary of Education would have to approve it. States DO NOT have the ultimate decision making abilities! 2:39:00 - Alexander reads page 89 of the bill stating that any changes to standards MUST go through the Secretary of Education for approval. As are most of the amendments offered by Republicans to this education bill, the Scott Amendment is defeated 12-10. DATA COLLECTING: Senator Burr at the 1:00:00 mark reveals information about ADDITIONAL data points that this legislation will add to the data mining. He says that his count is now 500 data points. TEACHER EVALUATIONS: Senator Alexander at 2:00:00 mark discusses his amendment to end federally mandated school and teacher evaluations. He says states had a "gun to their head" to adopt the teacher evaluations because they were desperate for NCLB waivers. He makes the charge that the Harkin bill creates a "NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD." The Gates Foundation involvement is mentioned frequently. Harkin says over and over "this is voluntary." If states don't want to implement the programs in the bill we just don't accept the money!" More strong evidence that our states need to "just say no" to all federal education dollars. As is pointed out in this debate: Any private business that entered into a partnership where the partner who contributed 10% funding got 80-90% of the control (as is the case with education funding under NCLB and Common Core) the partnership is DOOMED TO FAIL! Tom DeWeese:
The Growing Threat of Smart Meters
Sustainable Development is code for a policy designed to transform human society, essentially eliminating individual life decisions and replacing them with top - down, one-size-fits-all government control. In steady fashion, the agenda for this new policy, designed at the international level, is put into place piece by piece with a new government council here, and new regulation there, each designed to appear as a "local" development program. Like the proverbial frog in the slowly boiling pot, many Americans fail to notice the rise in government heat. The main course of action to impose the new agenda is through the pretense of environmental protection; "Sorry about your rights, but if we don't save the planet, then we will all perish!" And so with the devastation of a thousand pin pricks, America and its form or government is being changed through the creation of non-elected boards, councils and regional governments, designed to enforce the new regulations and "assure that we protect the environment."
The pin pricks come disguised as such issues as controls on community development; controls on use of private property; controls on use of open space; creation of development areas, many times under the excuse of historic preservation; communities designed on the blue print of pack and stack housing; making it harder to drive as roads are narrowed, even forcing cars to share the road with bicycles; the enforcement of expensive mass transit boondoggle projects; and the never ending spending spree on inefficient, unworkable alternative energy, such as wind and solar power.
In fact, control of energy and water are the two most effective tools in the enforcement of the Sustainable Development agenda. Without energy and water, human society stops. Using strict controls on how, or even if, energy and water can be used provides government with the power to dictate every aspect of society.

ImmigrationCounters.com provides the key numbers and events related to illegal immigration in the United States. Using the latest government and private sources, research and analysis trending data is factored at their individual rates of increase. For information about the research behind the individual counters clickhere Data Sources. ImmigrationCounters.com supports legal immigration and respect for all humanity yet highlights the significant impact of illegal immigration in America.
ImmigrationCounters.com informs the public of the realities of illegal immigration while challenging the myths and misinformation surrounding it. After decades of passively watching this problem grow, most Americans are now more aware of the severity of this issue. Our government has demonstrated a complete lack of urgency to control illegal immigration both on the borders and within the interior. Because of this large failure that which traditionally had been the American way of welcoming immigration is now dividing the country because of one word, illegal. Opposing illegal immigration and wanting the laws enforced is not un-American. It is time to set the record straight on what is un-American, illegal is un-American.
The issue of illegal immigration doesn't need more laws, studies or debates, it needs leadership and enforcement. America doesn't need immigration reform, it needs leadership reform. Because our government has failed to enforce the existing immigration laws, why should anyone be confident they will do so with expanded immigration reform? Because of these failures, legislators have been addressing the problems at their local levels with bills to manage it incrementally, piece-by-piece, rather than trying to fix the national problem at once--an impossible task. What most Americans expect is to have our borders secure, enforcement of the existing laws within the interior, meaningful punishment of employers who hire illegally and removal of incentives such as birthright citizenships and public school enrollments without status verifications. We must also address the fact that we're soft on criminals caught in crimes and aren't deported. No other country would allow this to continue. 40% of them entered the country legally and overstayed their visas. Yet there's still no reliable method to verify if Visa overstays have left the country. Another incentive that must be addressed is the birthright citizenship program that has resulted in millions of children and parents receiving instant rights and benefits. Some have called them "GPS babies" and this certainly cannot be what the authors of the 14th Amendment intended to occur. Public housing and other benefits are provided for the illegal parents through their 'anchor children' while citizens are turned away because of limited resources. This antiquated program must end. Government agencies and officials at all levels must address the costs associated with this kind of abuse. Past mistakes have been made in attempts to fix illegal immigration and our communities can no longer afford these kinds of mistakes.

| Unable to Stop Unstoppable Upon the premiere of the trailer for Kirk Cameron's new movie event UNSTOPPABLE, both Facebook and YouTube had issues. In fact, both social media sites made editorial decisions that limited access to the movie's website and trailer. Fortunately, people like you spoke up loudly and made your voices heard. Why all the concern? Good question. In UNSTOPPABLE, Kirk goes back to the beginning-literally-as he investigates the origins of good and evil and how they impact our lives ... and our eternities.

The Latest Beltway Investigations

Just when I thought I was out (of scandals to report), they pull me back in!
Doesn't anybody realize that when you get in bed with the government, you have to expect the diseases it spreads?
That's especially true when you get in bed with the Clintons and the Obamas. Really any liberal politician...
Don't get me wrong, I'm not foolish enough to suggest that Republicans don't get their hands dirty, too. I'm simply saying you wouldn't catch Reagan with a woman under his desk in the Oval Office, and it only took Nixon
ONE
wrong move to resign, unlike our current president. So it shouldn't be too surprising that there's another high-level scandal flying under the radar...
It involves Obama's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appointee, Alejandro Mayorkas; Hillary Clinton's brother, Anthony Rodham; and a close friend of the Clintons, Terry McAuliffe - the former DNC Chairman, current Virginia Gubernatorial candidate and high-ranking Hillary-for-President campaign official.
It also involves Terry McAuliffe's company, GreenTech - another initiative spawned out of Obama's green energy scam... excuse me, "War on Coal."
Citizenship for Sale
At the heart of this latest scandal lies a foreign investor government program that issues employment-based visas known as EB-5s.
And in a lot of ways, the program makes sense.

Maryland Election Integrity Project: Shaking Up the Status Quo Our friends at Election Integrity Maryland have been spending a lot of time researching their state voter rolls using True the Vote's online research program. After spending countless hours checking and double checking their findings, they concluded that their voter rolls didn't look right, so they did what common sense would tell you should happen next, they tried to get answers from the state. They asked state officials to help them understand if and how the inactive, and sometimes dead, voters they were finding on their rolls were being properly processed, in compliance with the National Voter Registration Act. Judging by the response EIM received, it seems the state has forgotten who works for whom...On Friday, the Maryland State Board of Elections told a statewide newspaper that they were "incensed" by EIM's actions and the State had "no obligation to respond to them regarding their list maintenance duties." This isn't some rogue county clerk or administrator. The county bureaucrats take directives from this office. Maryland has made news lately with new cases of voter fraud - including the two state registrant, voter, and congressional wannabe Wendy Rosen (D) in 2012. But yet, state officials are "incensed" when citizens hold them accountable for their inaction. Outrageous... Hang in there, EIM! Keep pushing for clean rolls! The truth is on your side! If you're a Maryland resident and this hits a little too close to home, you can do something about it. Get involved with Election Integrity Maryland today.

California Rallies: Help EIP Stop the Non-Citizen Poll Worker Bill A funny thing happened this week with the California Election Integrity Project's effort to fight a bill that would incentivize non-citizens to work in Golden State elections. After EIP gained national traction and earned international media attention, the California Assembly rushed passage of the bill a week before initially planned. Why? It turns out that state lawmakers of both parties began setting meetings with citizens to air out concerns with the bad bill. The fight isn't over yet and Californians are preparing to march on Sacramento to urge Governor Brown to veto this un-American legislation on August 29, 2013. We need your help to stop Common Core
We have two actionable items in our arsenal that we hope to unleash with your support.
The Common Core letter writing blitzannounced last month has proven to be effective. Early response from staffs at the Governor's office and the legislature have seen recognition of the uprising against Common Core throughout the state. If you or your local group want to be involved in this contact Sharon atsshaugh1@rcn.com or sharongrammy@icloud.com
Operation LEAP - This phone call offensive was recently initiated by Peg Luksik. Peg is now looking for grassroots leaders across the state to implement Operation LEAP, an organized, long-range, phone calling campaign by constituents to the HOME office of every State Representative and Senator in PA. The object is not a telephone blitz but an incessant stream of two calls an hour from 8a-4p every weekday (80 calls a week) from now until they return from recess and probably well beyond that date. A Call Captain is needed for each State Representative and State Senator to recruit, organize, and remind callers and log calls made.
The message we should all be sending to our legislators is clearly stated on Peg's website www.foundedontruth.com. See her "Four Freedoms of Common Core" for an effective message which is easy to understand and easy to communicate. More detailed analysis is also available, as well as documentation with her latest in-depth video that can be accessed here and here.
If you are or someone you recruit is willing to be a Call Captain, please email Peg at luksik.peg@gmail.com with name, email, and legislator's name only (phone calls are time consuming; emails are best) so she knows that legislator is covered. Two new hearings announced: The Senate Education hearing on Keystone Exams will be: 9:30 a.m., Monday, August 26 in the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District, Wayne. Details to follow. If you would like to submit questions on the standards to Senator Folmer to have asked at the hearings, go to his website here. The public hearing on Common Core will be 9:30 a.m., Thursday, August 29 in Hearing Room 1 of the State Capitol's North Office Building. We had 5,000 New Pennsylvanians Against Common Core flyers printed and they were nearly all distributed within three days. We have about 500 left and can mail to anyone needing some. We have another 5,000 going to print soon. If you or your group would like a large quantity, please email us at contactpacc2013@gmail.com Cost is $50 per 1,000 for large quantities. Defiance
"We're losing the country," a Maryland man said at a town hall meeting. "I want to see more defiance!"
He wasn't talking to local tea partiers; he was talking to his Republican Member of Congress.
It is time to take a stand against Obamacare. Heritage President Jim DeMint and Heritage Action for America CEO Michael Needham are echoing this grassroots call for defiance.

Have charges been filed against the Boston bombers in the beheadings of the three Jewish boys on the tenth anniversary of 911? The evidence implicates them and their friend, Ibragim Todashev, who was killed in a fracas with the FBI after confessing to the triple murder.
Boston bombing suspect's friends indicted on obstruction of justice charges FOX News,Septemebr 8, 2013 (thanks to Van)
A federal grand jury has returned a two-count indictment against two friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a U.S. attorney announced.
MyFoxBoston.com reported that Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov, both nationals of Kazakhstan who were residing in New Bedford on student visas, were charged Thursday with conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstructing justice with the intent to impede the bombing investigation. The two have been in federal custody since their arrest.
Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov attended the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with Tsarnaev, MyFoxBoston.com reported. They were originally charged with conspiring to obstruct justice on May 1 after seeing Tsarnaev's photo on television as a suspect in the bombings. Their lawyers said the men had no role in the bombings.
If convicted, Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov face up to 20 years in prison on the obstruction of justice count and up to five years in prison on the conspiracy count, each to be followed by up to three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
Both face the possibility of being deported, the report said.

The day after Amazon.com billionaire Jeff Bezos bought the Washington Post, one of the paper's columnists, Eugene Robinson, appeared on "Morning Joe." Robinson is a reliable voice for conventional liberal opinion, and on this particular day, Tuesday, August 6, 2013, conventional liberal opinion held that Bezos' purchase of the Post for $250 million was an act of bravery and humanity comparable to the Marshall Plan.

OBAMA VOWS TO RETURN GITMO DETAINEES TO YEMEN AFTER TERROR THREAT SHUTS DOWN U.S. EMBASSY -
From Our Own Liberty News Team

Information gleaned from terrorists' phone calls forced U.S. Embassy personnel to flee Yemen on Monday. And yet, Barack Hussein Obama is standing by his May 23 promise to return GITMO detainees to Yemen on a "case-by-case basis," reports Fox News. Obama made no comment regarding the timing of the GITMO detainee release with an upsurge of terrorism in Yemen.
The phone conversations which were apparently "serious" enough to shut down U.S. holdings across the Middle East came from agents of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. This particular organization was founded in 2009 by GITMO detainees who were released from American custody in 2006, according to Fox News. Despite the history of the terror group's founding, Obama has no problem releasing new recruits right into their hands! Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., John Bolton theorizes that Obama is deliberately trying to weaken the U.S. so that fewer terrorists are threatened by American power, and thus, begin to leave America alone. Check out the Ambassador's chilling reflections on how Barack Obama considers a weaker America to be a safer nation. Click Liberty News link for video.

August 9, 2013: This Week's Headlines

|
Friday, August 9, 2013 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer Obama Gets Tough In Middle East The Obama Administration is getting tough with countries in the Middle East, but unfortunately it is cracking down on our allies rather than our enemies. As we recently reported, the White House is telling the interim Egyptian government, which saved the country from the very real threat of an Islamist dictatorship, that it must bring the radical Muslim Brotherhood back into the government. Sadly, the Wall Street Journal reports that anti-U.S. hostility is on the rise. The Obama State Department has once again condemned the Israeli government for approving the construction of homes for Jews in Judea and Samaria. State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said yesterday, "The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued settlement activity and opposes any efforts to legitimize settlement outposts." In objecting to these so-called "settlement outposts," the administration gives the impression that it is disputing a few homes scattered across barren hillsides. In fact, nearly half a million Israelis live there. And while the administration is cracking down on Egypt and Israel, it is reaching out again to the new regime in Iran. But what is Iran doing? According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Iran has accelerated its nuclear program, installing 7,000 new centrifuges since the supposedly moderate Dr. Hojjatoleslam Hassan Rouhani was elected president, replacing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. A congressional delegation is in Israel right now. Here's what Prime Minister Netanyahu told them:
"I know that some place their hopes on Iran's new president. He knows how to exploit this. And yesterday he called for more talks. Of course he wants more talks. He wants to talk and talk and talk. And while everybody is busy talking to him, he'll be busy enriching uranium. "He (Rouhani) says, 'I talk and I smile and I enrich uranium.' Unhappily, the situation is not getting any better, it's actually getting worse. Iran is determined to get the bomb and we must be even more determined to prevent them from getting it."
IRS STILL Targeting The Tea Party This will get your blood boiling, friends. Testifying last week before the House Ways and Means Committee, an IRS agent admitted that the agency is still targeting Tea Party groups for additional scrutiny. What is going on at the IRS? This scandal broke months ago and dominated the headlines. One acting IRS commissioner was "fired." Lois Lerner is pleading the Fifth and has been suspended. Another top director has been placed on administrative leave. Acting IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel emphatically told reporters six weeks ago that he had stopped the practice of targeting Tea Party, Christian and other conservative groups. But the agent's testimony is clear. Consider these excerpts from a transcript released by the House Ways and Means Committee:
Committee: If you saw -- I am asking this currently, if today if a Tea Party case, a group -- a case from a Tea Party group came in to your desk, you reviewed the file and there was no evidence of political activity, would you potentially approve that case? Is that something you would do? IRS agent: At this point I would send it to secondary screening, political advocacy. Committee: So you would treat a Tea Party group as a political advocacy case even if there was no evidence of political activity on the application. Is that right? IRS agent: Based on my current manager's direction, uh-huh.
This is clearly well beyond just a few rogue agents. We seem to be dealing with an entire rogue agency! Join Me In D.C.! Join me at the 2013 Values Voter Summit, in Washington, D.C., October 11th - 13th. The Values Voter Summit is sponsored by my public policy organization, American Values, the Family Research Council, AFA Action, Heritage Foundation, Liberty University and Liberty Council. This year's Summit features an incredible line up of speakers, including:

- Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)
- Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)
- 2012 Vice Presidential Nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)
- Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA)
- And many more outstanding conservative leaders!
There will be educational sessions on a broad range of topics including: the threat to religious liberty, radical Islam, restraining Big Government and responding to the left. American Values will host a special luncheon on Saturday, October 12th. (To attend the luncheon, you must purchase a separate ticket.) Later that evening, there will be a gala dinner honoring Dr. Ed Feulner, founder of the Heritage Foundation. To learn more or to register online, click here now. I look forward to seeing you there!

Critics blast Jackson, Sharpton over silence on Florida school bus beating
Self-appointed civil rights leaders and celebrities remained mum on the vicious beating of a white sixth-grader at the hands of three older African-Americans in Florida, despite a growing chorus of critics who called their silence hypocrisy given their recent, racially-charged condemnation of the Sunshine State.
Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, who both blasted Florida in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting and the acquittal of George Zimmerman in Martin's death, with Jackson calling it an "apartheid state" and "our Selma," have not spoken publicly of the brutal beating aboard a school bus caught on cellphone and surveillance video. Neither Jackson nor Sharpton responded to requests for comment from FoxNews.com.

A Slow Motion Revolution Gathers Speed
The Progressives in both parties may be the establishment now but they have always been and continue to be revolutionaries seeking to turn the American dream into a socialist nightmare.
Since the 1890s the Progressives have worked to change our American Experiment from a federal republic operating on democratic principles that recognized our God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness into a democracy where the government grants rights and pursues its own happiness.
Inch by inch, step by step they have worked to change one aspect and then another until today the cacophony of minute changes has become a centrally-planned federally orchestrated symphony playing Hail to the Chief.
We have transitioned from federal republic into an imperial bureaucracy controlled by a Chicago raised Alinsky style outfit determined to reduce us to abject obedience. This is the direct result of an education system captured by the Progressives delivering generations of uninformed voters and of the entitlement society delivering a near majority of citizens who get more than they give from the federal trough.
This should be no surprise to anyone. A country once famous for the political engagement of its citizens has raised generations on the dictum that neither religion nor politics were the subject of polite debate. The culture of media-hyped sports addiction and hedonistic indulgence has produced millions who know more about their favorite team or about the latest fashion than about their own government.
I don't know about you but I'm so tired of being lectured by people who get their news from Leno, Colbert, or the Daily Show that I have all but stopped speaking of anything of substance with most people. We have all developed ways to identify fellow patriots. We listen for anyone to say anything that will give us an indication that here is another American who realizes where we are and from where we have fallen. Then we have great conversations, comparing observations and trying to encourage each other that the United States as we have known it will survive four more years of America's Chavez.

"In a way this is the perfect role for Alec Baldwin since he's been playing an MSNBC host all his life. Now he'll finally get to play one in real life." DE JURE AMNESTY The 1986 amnesty or the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which neither reformed nor controlled immigration, took in some 3 million illegal aliens. The new amnesty or Comprehensive Immigration Reform covers 12 million illegal aliens.
If 1986's euphemistic amnesty was a mere amnesty, this is a super-amnesty four times as big as the last one. If the 1986 amnesty were a state, by population size it would only be Utah. If the 2013 Son of Amnesty were ranked as a state it would be Illinois; the 5th largest state in America.
To keep the A-word from destroying their amnesty campaign before it even began, they coined "de facto Amnesty" to describe the current state of affairs in which millions of illegal aliens aren't deported, but aren't granted citizenship either.
Common sense would suggest that if not deporting 12 million illegal aliens is de facto amnesty, then legalizing 12 million illegal aliens would be de jure amnesty. The Amnestyville Horror ONE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE TOO MANY

It's hard to remember sometimes that the latest Bloombergian crusade to ban all the sodas, steal all the salt or wall off half the streets to automobile traffic had its roots in another New York City where Times Square was a seedy flickering danger zone, entire neighborhoods were always on the verge of an explosion and the only optimistic people were the ones moving out. Some twenty years ago, Rudy Giuliani began tackling crime directly with waves of men in blue using smarter and blunter tactics, and also indirectly by going after "Quality of Life" issues. The theory was that crime came out of social blight. Improve the neighborhood and you reduce crime. The ubiquitous squeegee men were put out of business and drives rejoiced, Times Square's acres of sex businesses were broken up to make way for Disney musicals. Homeless encampments that had taken over public places were broken up. Graffiti, prostitution, panhandling and a thousand other behaviors, some criminal, some not, but that contributed to the grimy dangerous city were targeted. Critics called Giuliani a fascist, but New York City became a better, safer and more prosperous place. It's hard to remember what a gamechanger the notion was, back then in the dark days of liberalism, that cities didn't have to be fixed with an endless round of welfare that only added more blight. Instead they could be fixed by enforcing civilized norms that too many had given up on enforcing. Giuliani's approach worked well. Too well. Quality of Life succeeded in cleaning up and restoring neighborhoods. It opened up a wave of gentrification. And it never stopped. In Giuliani's final term, a significantly safer city had already been reduced to toying with petty annoyances. There was a plan to ban jaywalking that never came to fruition. It was one of those moments where it was clear that the line between fighting social decay and enforcing conformity had slipped. If Giuliani, like Alexander, had run out of problems to conquer, Bloomberg never had any to begin with. Instead Bloomberg took his tone from the worst days of Giuliani's term and decided to turn Quality of Life into a means of enforcing conformity with whatever trendy notions of public health or ecology had come out of his favorite think-tanks.

Morning Jolt . . . with Jim Geraghty
August 9, 2013
Ah! Back. I figured you would prefer fresh, cruise-related material to the remaining two parts of what's lovable about Washington . . .
So, Here's What You (Probably) Missed on the NR Cruise
We are departing the era of the rule of law. That was the unplanned theme of the panels on the National Review cruise. A great time was had by all, but the comments from our editors and guest speakers probably echoed the ominous sense in your gut as you look to Washington, with a president who postpones portions of laws he deems politically inconvenient, a Department of Justice that seems thoroughly politicized, congressional investigators that hit stonewall after stonewall . . . and beyond our nation's capital, you see state attorneys general who refuse to defend laws they object to and mayors who think they can ignore and outlast festering sexual-harassment scandals . . .
A few highlights, as incentive to go on one of our future cruises:
- Allen West predicts that the Democrats, having nominated the first African-American presidential nominee, will follow by attempting to elect the first woman, Hillary Clinton, and follow her with the first Hispanic-American nominee, Julian Castro, the mayor of San Antonio and the keynote speaker of the Democrats' national convention in 2012.
- On the IRS scandal, two fronts to watch: First, the reporting of our Eliana Johnson, now investigating possible collusion between the IRS and the Federal Election Commission (I would call her Doctor Eliana Johnson, but it's an inside joke between her, myself, and several hundred NR cruisers). And the work of Cleta Mitchell, who represents many of the tea-party and conservative groups who were targeted and harassed by the IRS and is pursuing a civil case against Lois Lerner and other top officials.
- Cleta mentioned more than once that one of our biggest problems is that the chief law-enforcement officer of the country, Attorney General Eric Holder, is not interested in enforcing certain laws. He certainly seems to have no problem with misleading Congress, now does he?
- David Pryce Jones, on Egypt: "The choice is between tyranny and anarchy." He's similarly pessimistic about Syria, which he compares to Lebanon in the 1980s: "Syria is smashed to pieces, and you will never put it back together again."
- Daniel Hannan, member of the European Parliament discussing Greece and warning America about the culture of the "welfare junkie": "Just as individuals can be infantilized, so can nations."
- When our Ramesh Ponnuru was asked what economic policies he most wanted to institute, he said that what he really would prefer to help prosperity and financial stability, reduce dependency, and improve the nation's long-term economic prospects is for people to wait until they are married before having children. One of the conversation starters at dinner was asking people what they envisioned for the United States (and, in some cases, Canada or Europe) 20 years down the road. If there are strong families, parents taking care of their children, those children getting shaped with good values, a strong work ethic, a good education and an appreciation for that education, respect for the rule of law, a sense of being connected to the rest of their community, etc. we'll be just fine. Obviously, as we look around us today, we see the gift of a stable childhood denied to a larger and larger portion of our next generation.
- Offhand comment from Jay Nordlinger, responding to Hannan, paraphrase: This is the Golden Age for environmentalists, at least in the United States: Carbon emissions are down, economic production is down, commuting is down, we're less materialistic because we can afford less . . . Hey, they're getting what they've been demanding all these years.
- One of our stops was the Oil Museum in Stavanger, Norway, a lot more fascinating than I expected. Drilling, pumping, and exporting oil has generated $1 trillion in revenue for the Norwegians since discovery in the 1970s, in a country of less than 6 million people. One trillion dollars! (For perspective, that's one-seventeenth of our national debt.) The museum has you go through it in a sequence, beginning with the discovery and then walking you through the exploration process, the equipment used, life for the deep-sea divers, and so on. The first two-thirds or so showcase all this with great detail and great pride, showcasing the enormous difficulties of the North Sea and the amazing engineering and massive rigs - basically floating cities - built and maintained in extremely tough environments. The tone is, "We are the heirs of the Vikings! This is extremely hard to do, and we do it well! We rock! We are awesome!" And then for the last third of the museum the focus turns to . . . global warming. We learn that everything you just saw described with great pride is terrible and destroying the planet. This portion of the exhibit begins with the definition of a dilemma and goes through all the alternatives - and how they have flaws as well - nuclear power has nuclear waste, wind power can endanger wildlife, and so on. It almost came out and asserted that environmentalists can find problems in any energy option and are basically a bunch of whiners.
- Halliburton is among those thanked by the door of the museum.
- More than once, people asked when John Boehner would grow some [insert metaphor for testicular fortitude]. From the stage, the speaker had a few defenders, particularly John Sununu, who emphasized that Boehner has a particularly tough challenge leading a caucus that isn't particularly unified and working with limited leverage against Harry Reid's Senate and President Obama.
- During a discussion about the European Union, the historian Paul Johnson noted, while discussing modern Scotland, "the enterprising Scots have emigrated." I wonder how much this has driven the political evolution in other countries - that their creaking, tired, statist systems have created environments where the most entrepreneurial, most creative, most driven, and most talented conclude they have no real path to a better life, and they decide to immigrate to America or Europe . . . releasing the pressure for change within those countries.
- I want Paul Johnson to narrate an epic, Lord-of-the-Rings-esque film. "In a world where . . . one man stood for . . ."
As I understand it, there are two cruises slated for 2014 - one from May 17 to 22 to Bermuda and back, departing from New York, and then the traditional post-election Caribbean cruise sometime in mid November.
Meanwhile, back in the United States . . .
A Buck for Senate, in a Country That Is Running Short on Bucks
Remember Ken Buck, who quite a few Republicans believe botched a winnable Senate race in Colorado in 2010? Well, he's running in 2014:
Ken Buck, the current Weld County District Attorney, will run for U.S. Senate next year in an effort to unseat Democratic Sen. Mark Udall.
Buck, a Tea Party Republican, filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission Wednesday and will officially launch his campaign with an announcement tour around the state in early September, according to a campaign official. He joins state Sens. Randy Baumgardner and Owen Hill, who have both announced they will seek the GOP nomination to unseat Udall.
Love him, hate him, this is why we have primaries.
Meanwhile, even further up in the Northwest . . .
A Matter of Reichert and Wrong in Washington
This could be good news for GOP efforts to win the Senate, in a state where Republicans have a tough time winning statewide races . . .
U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert is apparently again thinking about running for statewide office.
Reichert, a former King County Sheriff and fifth-term Republican representative in the 8th Congressional District, said in a Thursday interview with C.R. Douglas of Q13 FOX News that he is considering running for governor or U.S. Senate in 2016.
"I'm thinking about all those options," he said. "I still feel like I'm young and energetic. And, you know, we'll see how Mr. (Gov. Jay) Inslee does, and if he continues on the path that he is, it doesn't look too good for him. So I'll keep an eye on that. And who knows what Patty Murray does in the next year or two?"
Reichert, 62, is a popular politician who represents a safe Republican seat. He has toyed with running for statewide office in the past.
Senator Patty Murray is up for reelection in 2014.
ADDENDA: Jim Lileks noted that in our cruise materials, Holland America Line announced they're developing a new infrared system to spot individuals who fall overboard. He asked, "Just how often does this happen, that they need to develop this?"
When you watch Iron Man 3 on United Airlines, the entire sequence of Iron Man rescuing the people who fell out of Air Force One is cut - somewhat understandable in that airline passengers may not want to watch people falling out of an airliner and plummeting to their doom . . . but that does mean the movie jumps from one scene to another with some inexplicable plot holes.
Today on NRO - August 9, 2013
Today on National Review Online . . .
Before the weekend officially starts, there's a lot of news to relay to you, beginning with the White House's plan for amnesty should Congress not pass immigration reform this fall (hint: It involves more abuse of the rule of law). Mark Krikorian has the story.
The union battle continues to rage, now in California, Katrina Trinko reports. Unions in San Francisco are demanding a 15 percent wage increase, and in this debt-heavy state, even Democrats are balking.
How does the United States protect itself against future Edward Snowdens, while still upholding the rights of legitimate whistleblowers? According to Fred Fleitz, Congress needs to get to work immediately developing a safe-harbor policy for intelligence whistleblowers.
Bob Filner, the I-refuse-to-resign mayor of San Diego, has a long history of sexual harassment, going back to his time in Congress. He was known by women on the Hill as "Filthy Filner," but female Democrats (ahem, yes you Nancy Pelosi) ignored his behavior and promoted him to chairman of the Veterans' Affairs committee. And yet there are still no consequences for either Pelosi or Filner, Michelle Malkin writes.
A-Rod is no Lou Gehrig. As Rich Lowry laments, today's culture promotes glitzy and scandalous A-Rods over modest and humble Gehrigs. What can we do to turn the tables back around? Rich has the answer.
Later today, Mark Steyn will chime in on NRO.

Insurance companies flee States which will not permit them to make a profit. ObamaCare supporters stunned
Aug 11, 2013 06:13 am | Coach Collins
by Doug Book, editor
"Looks like Obamacare is more "on track" than "train wreck," gloated the experts on Barack Obama's Think Progress website as they reported the Master's healthcare scheme was literally forcing America's insurers to lower their premiums. (1)
The glad tidings arose back in May after Oregon providers Providence Health Plan and Family Care Health requested premium rate reductions from the state-run ObamaCare exchange. (Actually, the state just gets to PAY for the exchange. It's RUN by Kathleen Sebelius at HHS.)
Naturally this was big news for Affordable Care Act fans. After all, what could be better than private insurers wanting permission to lower premiums, providing proof positive for Mr. Obama's claims of lower healthcare costs brought about by competition. (MANAGED competition, that is)
But the left might be premature in celebrating the actions of 2 minor insurers in Oregon. For news from the rest of the nation is not quite as cheery ... Continue Reading:Insurance companies flee States which will not permit them to make a profit. ObamaCare supporters stunned

Support for voter ID: Another poll the media has swept under the rug
Aug 10, 2013 01:00 pm | Coach Collins
by Kevin "Coach" Collins
The media loves polls. Why shouldn't they, for the most part they control their outcome and can use them to generate fake "news" items. The media used a steady stream of twisted and distorted polls to try to convince America that we were "demanding" strict gun control - even offering one that said eighty percent of Republicans favored tighter background checks. Of course they failed, but that hasn't stopped them from using polls as weapons against conservatives. Nevertheless, one feature of a poll that will keep the media from using it is a message that the media and its Democrat pals don't like.
Last month McClatchy quietly released the results of ... Continue Reading:Support for voter ID: Another poll the media has swept under the rug

Hiding the 5000lb Benghazi Elephant
Aug 10, 2013 06:13 am | Coach Collins
by Jim Emerson, staff writer
CNN reported that up to 35 intelligence operatives were on the ground near the US consulate in Benghazi Libya at the time of the terror attack. Their mission was to smuggle arms from Libya armories to the Muslim Brotherhood backed, al-Qaeda affiliated rebels in Syria. Such an operation was mentioned soon after the 7 hour, Sept 11 attack that resulted in the murder of four Americans at the poorly defended facility. If the CIA agents were smuggling arms they had to be given the execution order to conduct such operations by the President or the real power in the White House, Lady Macbeth Valerie Jarrett. The State Department leadership were most likely briefed and read-in to the program. In laymen's terms, they knew about it. (1) (3)

Someone is lying about the chances of the House granting amnesty; Dem. Gutierrez or Rep. Miller
Aug 09, 2013 01:02 pm | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
The battle over whether the Republican controlled House will grant amnesty to illegal aliens or push back the Democrat controlled Senate's drive to create millions of new Democrat voters has heated up. Because the House is in recess and its members are back in their home districts, the psychological warfare operations phase of this battle has been ratcheted up by the Democrats.
A new report from the leftist blog, "The Hill" tells us that Democrat Representative Luis Gutierrez (Chicago - Mexico, Puerto Rico and South America) is crowing about personally knowing of between 40 and 50 House Republicans who are ready to be "supportive of immigration reform."
Although he would not name these four dozen or so Republicans, when asked to expand on his claim Gutierrez said, "If they ask me today, go find those 40 to 50 Republicans, I'll tell them I found them. I know where they're at.... "I'm ... Continue Reading:Someone is lying about the chances of the House granting amnesty; Dem. Gutierrez or Rep. Miller

Chicago's top cop McCarthy should leave now, give the City a break
Aug 09, 2013 06:13 am | Coach Collins
by Suzanne Eovaldi, staff writer
The guy just doesn't fit in. He needs to quit now in order to explore great new opportunities for the sake of the children. Chicago's Police Superintendent Garry Francis McCarthy, known lovingly as McStreetlights, was hand picked by Mayor Rahm "Tiny Dancer" Emanuel to do something about Chicago, a city whose kill stats are worse than those of Afghanistan. In a stunning panoply of ironic details, the man blew in from NYPD's CompStat program, moved over to Newark, then sent letters to Chicago gang bangers, telling them in essence that he knew where they lived and to have a nice day. Can you imagine? "CompStat, according to Wiki, is a multilayered dynamic approach to crime reduction, quality of life improvement, and personnel and resource management by which Geographic Information Systems are used to map crime and identify problems." Are you kidding me?
To get a clue, here's a new homework assignment ... Continue Reading:Chicago's top cop McCarthy should leave now, give the City a break

"Mister President where are the jobs?" and other screeches from Nancy Pelosi
Aug 08, 2013 06:13 am | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
"Mister President where are the jobs?" Remember when Nancy Pelosi incessantly screeched that phrase over and over during the George W. Bush administration? We haven't heard her whining like this or using the companion phrase "hamburger flipper jobs" very much lately have we? If Pelosi said these things today she would look even dumber than she did the first time because Democrat Barack Obama's job production numbers are embarrassingly poor compared to those of the leading Republican president of our time Ronald Reagan.
Each month brings us terribly weak job production from Obama. During his first term in office Obama produced an average of 97,020 a month for a total of 4,657,000, nowhere near the minimal, "break even" plateau of 150,000 jobs a month needed just to keep from falling further behind.
By contrast Ronald Reagan, the Republican president Democrats love to hate, produced jobs during his first term at a dizzying pace. His ... Continue Reading:"Mister President where are the jobs?" and other screeches from Nancy Pelosi

Top 10 Questions Journalists Won't Ask President Obama at Press Conference |
|
by Joel Pollak
President Barack Obama rarely makes himself available to the mainstream media. They adore him anyway. At rare press conferences, such as the one scheduled for noon Friday at the White House, they lob softball questions or accept his evasive, meandering answers, rarely pressing him for clarity, much less truth. But there are many questions that the president ought to answer, yet which he is unlikely to face at all.

Dick Durbin: Worse than stupid
Posted: 11 Aug 2013 02:26 PM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
John Hinderaker called out Dick Durbin for his stupidity in "Is Dick Durbin the dumbest Democrat?" Recognizing the intensity of the competition for the laurels, John left the question open, but he found Durbin definitely to be in the running.
But Durbin is worse than stupid. He is a bully and a thug. As John recounted, Durbin has been sending out letters to anyone he has determined to have funded the American Legislative Exchange Council since 2005. He wants to know these supporters' position on "stand your ground" laws, which ALEC (a group of state legislators pushing center-right reform ideas) advocated around the country. Cato's Ilya Shapiro has a bit more of the background here.
Cato Institute president John Allison has responded to Durbin with a letter that Shapiro quotes in its entirety. Here it is:
Dear Senator Durbin:
Your letter of August 6, 2013 is an obvious effort to intimidate those organizations and individuals who may have been involved in any way with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
While Cato is not intimidated because we are a think tank-whose express mission is to speak publicly to influence the climate of ideas-from my experience as a private-sector CEO, I know that business leaders will now hesitate to exercise their constitutional rights for fear of regulatory retribution.
Your letter thus represents a blatant violation of our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. It is a continuation of the trend of the current administration and congressional leaders, such as yourself, to menace those who do not share your political beliefs-as evidenced by the multiple IRS abuses that have recently been exposed.
Your actions are a subtle but powerful form of government coercion.
We would be glad to provide a Cato scholar to testify at your hearing to discuss the unconstitutional abuse of power that your letter symbolizes.
Sincerely,
John Allison
Shapiro concludes his post with the in-your-face observation that Cato will be standing its ground. Congrats to Cato and to Allison.

Photo of the Day, With Commentary on Golf and Benghazi
Posted: 11 Aug 2013 01:28 PM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
Reporters have followed President Obama to Martha's Vineyard, where they are standing by to inform us of any wonderful deeds He might perform. Today, pool reporters were ecstatic that they were permitted to watch Obama play golf. You can read their #kneepadmedia-Brad Thor's hashtag-tweets about the golf outing here. Zeke Miller, a political reporter for Time, tweeted this photo of Obama, taken just after he missed a putt:
The pool report says: "He let out a little, 'Ooooh,' as it happened." Like his fellow reporters, Miller apparently found the photo more adorable than it might seem to the average American, who-for example-may have been cut back to 29 hours a week because of Obamacare. Miller also tweeted the pool report's description of Obama's reaction to the missed putt:
First putt was a miss, which Obama reacted to by leaning back & kicking his knee up, as if trying to coax the ball into breaking right.
So I'm wondering: when do you suppose our intrepid press corps will report on Obama's whereabouts and actions during the Benghazi crisis in the same detail, and with the same enthusiasm, that they devote to his missing a putt?

States Tell Insurers: Ignore Reality, Believe In Politics!
Posted: 11 Aug 2013 12:27 PM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
The latest in climate irrationality comes from various states that are hectoring insurance companies to prepare for "climate change." One of them, not surprisingly, is Minnesota:
Minnesota has joined four other states in requiring its insurance companies to discuss how extensively they've prepared for climate change.
About 70 companies have until Aug. 31 to respond to an eight-question survey. The questionnaire, developed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), focuses on the assessment of risk associated with climate change. However, it also seeks information on whether insurance companies are working to reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions, have altered their investment strategies in response to climate change, or have encouraged policyholders to reduce losses caused by "climate change-influenced events."
What is the connection between insurers and climate change? Tornadoes and hurricanes, of course:
While the other states face risks of coastal storms that Minnesota does not, Rothmann said Minnesota firms are vulnerable to tornadoes, severe storms and river floods, which some climate models suggest are increasing with a warming climate.
Here we see the insanity of global warming hysteria, distilled to its essence: "Some climate models suggest" that tornadoes, hurricanes and floods are increasing, so it must be true! But wait-don't we actually know whether such severe weather phenomena are increasing? Can't we just count them? Of course we can, and the reality (as opposed to the model) is that severe weather is not increasing at all. From this post, here are the data for tornadoes in the United States. They are at a historic low:
And here are the data for Category 3, 4 and 5 hurricanes. Note that the U.S. has now gone for a record number of days without a single landfall of such a storm:
There is a word for those who demand adherence to politically-motivated and government-funded models rather than empirical reality, and it isn't "pro-science."
UPDATE: Anthony Watts published this helpful list describing current climate/weather trends in yesterday's Watts Up With That. How many people who rely on the alarmist media have any knowledge of these facts?
* Coldest summer on record at the North Pole
* Highest August Arctic ice extent since 2006
* Record high August Antarctic ice extent
* No major hurricane strikes for eight years
* Slowest tornado season on record
* No global warming for 17 years
* Second slowest fire season on record
* Four of the five snowiest northern hemisphere winters have occurred since 2008

The Blog as Modern Pamphlet
Posted: 11 Aug 2013 09:21 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
I'm re-reading for the first time in many years Bernard Bailyn's classic Ideological Origins of the American Revolution, which deservedly won both the Bancroft and Pulitzer prizes. An early footnote (yes, I always take in the footnotes) quotes George Orwell from 1948: "At any given moment there is a sort of all-prevailing orthodoxy, a general tacit agreement not to discuss some large and uncomfortable fact." Orwell thought the remedy to what might be called the monopoly of the media-academic-complex was the revival of the pamphlet. May I suggest that the blog, like Power Line, is the modern day equivalent of the pamphlets of the revolutionary era.
Bailyn paraphrases Orwell's description this way:
The pamphlet is a one-man show. One has complete freedom of expression, including, if one chooses, the freedom to be scurrilous, abusive, and seditious; or, on the other hand, to be more detailed, serious, and "highbrow" than is ever possible in a newspaper or in most kinds of periodicals. At the same time, since the pamphlet is always short and unbound, it can be produced much more quickly than a book, and in principle at any rate, can reach a bigger public. Above all, the pamphlet does not have to follow any prescribed pattern. It can be in prose or in verse, it can consist largely of maps or statistics or quotations, it can take the form of a story, a fable, a letter, an essay, a dialogue, or a piece of "reportage." All that is required is that it shall be topical, polemical, and short.
Just so. Bailyn went on to argue that pamphlets (like the most famous one, Tom Paine's Common Sense) was where the ideas of the American Revolution were worked out in real time-and not so much the newspapers, of which there were many at the time. Sounds a lot like today, with our somnambulant mainstream media.
According to our control panel dashboard, since it's origin Power Line has published over 35,000 individual posts. It makes rather difficult my idea of compiling an e-Book of "The Best of Power Line." But with enough advance orders at $1.99 we might just sit down and try it! I think, however, I'll give it a different title: The Ideological Origins of the Power Line Revolution. I'll see if we can get a dust jacket blurb from Dan Rather.
. . . And I blame Power Line!
JOHN adds: Professor Bailyn was one of the great historians of the 20th Century; he was also my younger brother's PhD adviser.

Cleta Mitchell: The IRS scandals, part 4
Posted: 11 Aug 2013 05:15 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
In the fourth of the four videos on the IRS scandals that I shot with Cleta Mitchell last week on the just concluded NR cruise we touch on the question of responsibility. Previous videos in this series are posted here (part 1), here (part 2) and here (part 3).
You can go a long way in assessing responsibility through the exercise of common sense based on the facts disclosed to date. The Obama White House first asserted that the scandal (singular) was the responsibility of low-level Cincinnati employees. This assertion was akin to the Nixon White House's initial assertion that the Watergate scandal was a third-rate burglary. Obama's current position asserting the IRS scandal to be a "phony" concoction of his political enemies is not only false and Nixonian, it also demonstrates his complicity in the massive wrongdoing.
I reiterate that Cleta is the prominent Washington attorney who represents several clients victimized by the criminal misconduct of the IRS over the past four years. Please listen closely to what she has to say. She knows what she is talking about.

Better Late Than Never: NPR Admits It Slandered South Dakota
Posted: 10 Aug 2013 01:39 PM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
In October 2011, NPR aired a three-part series of programs on its investigation of foster care for Native American children in South Dakota. The series, reported by Laura Sullivan, made the sensational claim that South Dakota welfare agencies take (the word "kidnap" was used more than once) Indian children from their homes, and place them in foster care with white families so that they can collect money from the federal government. Using, among other sources, information that I received from South Dakota officials that was suppressed by NPR, I wrote a series of posts on NPR's journalistic malfeasance: Slandering the Red States, Part 1; Slandering the Red States, Part II: An Astonishing Omission; Slandering the Red States, Part III: She Was Promised There Would Be No Math; Slandering the Red States, Part IV: The Lieutenant Governor; Slandering the Red States, Part V: Why Won't NPR Tell the Real Story? Help Me Ask!; and Slandering the Red States, Part VI: Laura Sullivan Responds. I asked Ms. Sullivan a series of questions about her reporting via email. When she failed to respond, I asked our readers to email her, politely requesting that she respond to my questions. That worked: within a matter of hours, Ms. Sullivan sent me a set of thoroughly unsatisfactory answers, as I recorded in Part VI. I also forwarded that post to NPR's ombudsman.
It turns out that the ombudsman, Edward Schumacher-Matos, has been working on an analysis of the NPR series ever since. His conclusions, explained at length, were published yesterday. They are remarkable, in my view, for their candor and fairness:
My finding is that the series was deeply flawed and should not have been aired as it was.
The series committed five sins that violate NPR's code of standards and ethics. They were:
1. No proof for its main allegations of wrongdoing;
2. Unfair tone in communicating these unproven allegations;
3. Factual errors, shaky anecdotes and misleading use of data by quietly switching what was being measured;
4. Incomplete reporting and lack of critical context;
5. No response from the state on many key points.
No doubt the investigative team was driven by the history of injustices suffered by Native Americans. There is much to be outraged about. But good intentions are not enough. Specifically, there is no whistleblower, no document - no smoking gun even - to support the unmistakable allegation that for nearly the last 15 years, state social workers have been so evil as to take Indian children from their families as a way to reap federal funds for the state government. The charge is so shocking and such a potential insult to many dedicated social workers that the burden of proof should have been especially high.
There is more that is wrong, too. The reported federal reimbursement numbers are badly inflated. That is a factual flaw. Perhaps more upsetting to many of us is a moral one: concern for the centrally relevant matter of child neglect is simply dismissed. That many of the foster decisions, meanwhile, are in fact made by the tribes' own independent judges goes unreported altogether. The crucial context of social ills and a crisis of Indian family breakdowns on the state's reservations are also all but missing.
There is much, much more, but you get the drift. I don't believe I have ever seen a representative of a media outlet take apart his own outlet's story with the care and thoroughness displayed by Mr. Schumacher-Matos. The one thing he doesn't do is address the motivations of those who reported and produced the false and misleading series, but it is easy to fill in that blank. The reporter and editors spoke from the liberal perspective that is taken for granted by pretty much everyone at NPR. They had a narrative that they wanted to push for political reasons.
And they are sticking by their story, even though it has been thoroughly demolished, by me and by Mr. Schumacher-Matos. In a brief statement, Kinsey Wilson, NPR's Executive Vice-President and Chief Content Officer, and Margaret Low Smith, NPR's Senior Vice President for News, say that "NPR stands by the stories." Which suggests that at NPR, commitment to leftist ideology trumps any fealty to the facts.
I may have more to say about this in the days to come, but that is enough for the moment.

William P. Clark, RIP
Posted: 10 Aug 2013 09:53 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
Sad news comes today of the passing of William P. Clark, who passed away this morning at his ranch near Paso Robles after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Clark served Ronald Reagan as deputy secretary of state (chiefly to keep an eye out on Al Haig), national security adviser, and secretary of the Interior.
Known as "The Judge" from his tenure on the California Supreme Court (to which Reagan had appointed Clark when Reagan was governor), Clark is the only senior member of the president's inner circle who never wrote a memoir of his time with Reagan, reflecting his supreme modesty, closely related to his devout Catholic faith, and his discretion. But he was the most important and influential presidential confidante since Harry Hopkins, and we have Paul Kengor and Clark's niece Patricia Clark Doerner to thank for a fine biography The Judge, William P. Clark: Ronald Reagan's Top Hand. I reviewed The Judge in the Claremont Review of Books when it appeared back in 2007. Here's part of the review:
Clark was a true Cincinnatus, entering public service reluctantly and without personal ambition, and longing always to return to the plough. As they did Reagan, the media and his opponents consistently underestimated and ridiculed him, though he was supremely able. In some respects Clark could be considered Ronald Reagan without the Hollywood personality, and indeed the judge stands out as the one person with whom the president was personally close-the exception to Reagan's well-known personal distance. (Clark is the person who originated the famous slogan, "let Reagan be Reagan.")
With access to Clark's private papers and other previously restricted sources, Kengor and Doerner detail for the first time many of Clark's exploits, especially his crucial role as national security advisor in 1982 and 1983, when Reagan's Soviet strategy took definite shape. His role in the president's March 1983 speech announcing the Strategic Defense Initiative was decisive. Virtually everyone in the upper reaches of the administration was against the speech, except for Clark. It is hard to imagine Reagan going through with it without the judge's back-up. Clark was the best of Reagan's six national security advisors-the authors argue he was one of the best for any president ever-and when he stepped down it was mostly because he thought the tensions between him and the State Department were hurting his boss. Few public servants are so self-effacing.
Clark was Reagan's go-to person for discrete missions to foreign leaders, which continued even after he formally left the administration in 1985. Kengor and Doerner provide inside accounts of Clark's private meetings with François Mitterrand, Pope John Paul II, Margaret Thatcher, the leaders of China, and Saddam Hussein. There is also the first complete account of his successful 1983 mission to South America to prevent Suriname from becoming another Nicaragua. And The Judge provides a useful account of Clark's extensive efforts to blunt the nuclear freeze movement and the pacifism of the Catholic bishops. [Kengor's] The Crusader and The Judge deserve to take their place among essential studies of Reagan. With these works, the literature on Reagan's foreign policy is more or less complete-until additional classified documents are released or new Soviet sources are revealed.
I only got to meet Clark once or twice in person, and, like Ed Meese, he was such a gentleman that he would never dish on his rivals and critics in the administration. But he did share some details about a number of key events, though never once burnishing his own role in the outcome as he might well have done with ample justification.
Here's my account of Clark's departure as NSA from The Age of Reagan:
In the middle of the growing crises of Lebanon and Grenada in mid-October, Bill Clark decided to step down as national security adviser. Clark had been talking with Reagan about leaving since January. The constant friction between Shultz and Weinberger, and the relentless undercutting Clark received from Baker and Deaver, who abetted a ferocious media campaign against Clark, had worn him to the breaking point, and, in Clark's own view, diminished his ability to serve Reagan adequately in the post. The NSC process was becoming dysfunctional again. Clark wanted to return to his quiet life as a rancher in California, and had never intended to stay in Washington beyond two years. Reagan had prevailed upon him to stay on as national security adviser at the end of 1982, and now convinced Clark to replace James Watt as secretary of the interior, which Clark found more agreeable. Conservatives inside and outside the White House were dismayed. Jeane Kirkpatrick said "It is an unmitigated disaster for him to leave. That decision shouldn't have been made. And, once made, it should have been rescinded."
Clark's departure set in motion another power struggle. James Baker and Mike Deaver saw an opportunity to solidify their power over Meese, and Reagan initially decided to name Baker his new national security adviser and Deaver to be Baker's replacement as chief of staff. But when confronted with ferocious opposition from Clark, Meese, Casey, Kirkpatrick, and Weinberger, Reagan changed his mind, much to the annoyance and disappointment of Baker and Deaver. ("You don't have enough confidence in me to make me chief of staff!", an angry Deaver shouted at Reagan in the Oval Office.) The opposition was partly on the merits, but also contained an element of payback. A few months before, Baker and Deaver had attempted to enlist Clark in an intrigue to ease out Meese, but miscalculated; Clark sided firmly with Meese and scuttled the plan. Casey, Meese, and others urged Reagan to select Kirkpatrick as Clark's NSC replacement, but Shultz objected. Faced with these irreconcilable factions, Reagan chose Clark's deputy, Robert McFarlane, as the compromise pick to be national security adviser, which assured that the Pentagon-State Department/ Weinberger-Shultz feuds would continue. McFarlane, a Marine veteran, had a quiet demeanor that led some to dismiss him as "a quintessential staff man." New Right activist Paul Weyrich dimissed McFarlane as having been "created by God to disappear into crowds," but this is unfair and inaccurate. Michael Ledeen, among others, discerned McFarlane's "distinctly hawkish instincts" that comported with Reagan's hard line side. But he lacked Clark's personal ties to Reagan that made Clark so effective. "It was an unhappy day all around," Reagan wrote in his diary of the staff discord. "My decision not to appoint Jim Baker as national security adviser, I suppose, was a turning point for my administration," Reagan wrote later in his memoirs, "although I had no idea at the time how significant it would prove to be."

The Week in Pictures: Martha's Vineyard Edition
Posted: 10 Aug 2013 06:45 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
As President Obama heads off for his annual summer vacation with the common folk of Martha's Vineyard (now I know what you're thinking: can't he just stay there?), obviously the topic of the week is what didn't happen last week: a terror attack. Except perhaps we should ponder the idea that the "chatter" was in fact the terror attack? What do you call it when our chattering classes respond to "chatter" but shuttering 21 embassies? "Leading from behind" indeed! (And no puns on the "behinds" of our Dear Leader and his circle.)
What real men were like.
Confirmation at last.
Speaking of trained bears. . .
But it could have been this. ..
A real place in Ohio.

Cleta Mitchell: The IRS scandals, part 3
Posted: 10 Aug 2013 06:07 AM PDT

Cleta Mitchell is the prominent Washington attorney whose practice has given her a front row seat on the IRS scandals. On the just completed NR cruise Cleta gave one of the most compelling presentations involving topical matters of current interest. I asked her if she would let me record some of her comments in four short videos. The first video is here, the second here.
In the video below Cleta discusses the almost unbelievable case of True the Vote founder and president Catherine Engelbrecht. Jillian Kay Melchior aptly calls it "True Scandal."
Can it happen here? In Obama's America, it apparently can. Listen up!

Obama clears it up
Posted: 10 Aug 2013 05:49 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
As we have noted here several times, the administration has announced what amounts to a one-year delay in the enforcement of the Obamacare employer mandate. The announcement came in an unusual package for such things. It was wrapped in a cotton-candy blog post by Treasury Assistant Secretary Mark Mazur. The post cited no legal authority and delivered something like a royal edict with respect to a law that by its terms goes into effect in January 2014.
Yesterday President Obama held a press conference. The White House text of the press conference is posted here, video here. Working on this post I used the Washington Post transcript posted here.
Ed Henry asked Obama about his authority to suspend the implementation of the employer mandate:
You recently decided on your own to delay a key part of that. And I wonder, if you pick and choose what parts of the law to implement, couldn't your successor down the road pick and choose whether they'll implement your law and keep it in place?
In response Obama's unspooled the blather and the billingsgate in which he always wraps his defense of Obamacare. Here Obama addresses Henry's question regarding his authority:
We did have the executive authority to do so, and we did so.
Mr. President, thank you for clearing that up. We have been wondering about it.
Here are Obama's comments about Obamacare in their entirety, including the quote above:
PRESIDENT OBAMA: With respect to health care, I didn't simply choose to delay this on my own. This was in consultation with businesses all across the country, many of whom are supportive of the Affordable Care Act, but - and who - many of whom, by the way, are already providing health insurance to their employees but were concerned about the operational details of changing their HR operations if they've got a lot of employees, which could be costly for them, and them suggesting that there may be easier ways to do this.
Now what's true, Ed, is that in a normal political environment, it would have been easier for me to simply call up the speaker and say, you know what? This is a tweak that doesn't go to the essence of the law. It has to do with, for example, are we able to simplify the attestation of employers as to whether they're already providing health insurance or not. It looks like there may be some better ways to do this. Let's make a technical change of the law.
That would be the normal thing that I would prefer to do, but we're not in a normal atmosphere around here when it comes to, quote- unquote, "Obamacare."
We did have the executive authority to do so, and we did so. But this doesn't go to the core of implementation.
Let me tell you what is the core of implementation that's already taken place. As we speak, right now, for the 85 percent of Americans who already have health insurance, they are benefiting from being able to keep their kid on their - on their plan if their kid is 26 or younger. That's benefiting millions of young people around the country, which is why lack of insurance among young people has actually gone down. That's in large part attributable to the steps that we've taken. You've got millions of people who've received rebates because part of the Affordable Care Act was to say that if an insurance company isn't spending 80 percent of your premium on your health care, you get some money back. And lo and behold, people have been getting their money back. It means that folks who've been bumping up with lifetime limits on their insurance that leaves them vulnerable - that doesn't exist. Seniors have been getting discounts on their prescription drugs. That's happening right now. Free preventive care, mammograms, contraception - that's happening right now.
I met a young man today on a bill signing I was doing with the student loan bill who came up to me and said, thank you - he was - he couldn't have been more than 25, 26 years old - thank you; I have cancer; thanks to the Affordable Care Act, working with the California program, I was able to get health care, and I'm now in remission. And so right now people are already benefiting.
Now, what happens on October 1st, in 53 days, is for the remaining 15 percent of the population that doesn't have health insurance, they're going to be able to go on a website or call up a call center and sign up for affordable, quality health insurance at a significantly cheaper rate than what they can get right now on the individual market.
And if, even with lower premiums, they still can't afford it, we're going to be able to provide them with a tax credit to help them buy it. And between October 1st, end of March, there will be an open enrollment period in which millions of Americans for the first time are going to be able to get affordable health care.
Now, I think the really interesting question is why it is that my friends in the other party have made the idea of preventing these people from getting health care their holy grail. Their number-one priority. The one unifying principle in the Republican Party at the moment is making sure that 30 million people don't have health care; and presumably, repealing all those benefits I just mentioned - kids staying on their parents' plan, seniors getting discounts on their prescription drugs, I guess a return to lifetime limits on insurance, people with pre-existing conditions continuing to be blocked from being able to get health insurance.
That's hard to understand as a - an agenda that is going to strengthen our middle class. At least they used to say, well, we're going to replace it with something better. There's not even a pretense now that they're going to replace it with something better.
Q: (Off mic) -
PRESIDENT OBAMA: The - the - the notion is simply that those 30 million people, or the 150 million who are benefiting from the other aspects of affordable care, will be better off without it. That's their assertion, not backed by fact, not backed by any evidence.
It's just become an ideological fixation.
Well, I'll tell you what - they're wrong about that. There is no doubt that in implementing the Affordable Care Act - a program of this significance - there are going to be some glitches. No doubt about it. There are going to be things where we say, you know what? We should have thought of that earlier, or this would work a little bit better or this needs an adjustment. That was true of Social Security. That was true of Medicare. That was true of the children's health insurance program. That was true of the prescription drug program part D that was rolled out by a Republican president and supported by Republicans who are still in the House of Representatives.
That's true, by the way, of a car company rolling out a new car. It's true of Apple rolling out the new iPad. So, you know, you will be able to, whenever you want, during the course of the next six months and probably the next year, find occasions where you say, aha, you know what? That could have been done a little bit better, or that thing - they're kind of making an administrative change. That's not how it was originally thought this thing was going to work.
Yes, exactly, because our goal is to actually deliver high- quality, affordable health care for people and to reform the system so costs start going down and people start getting a better bang for the buck. And I make no apologies for that.
And let me just make one last point about this. The idea that you would shut down the government unless you prevent 30 million people from getting health care is a bad idea. What you should be thinking about is, how can we advance and improve ways for middle class families to have some security so that if they work hard they can get ahead and their kids can get ahead.
In case your mind was wandering, let me run this by you one more time:
There is no doubt that in implementing the Affordable Care Act - a program of this significance - there are going to be some glitches....That's true, by the way, of a car company rolling out a new car. It's true of Apple rolling out the new iPad.
And some people think the guy lacks a sense of humor!
Peter Suderman comments on several of Obama's points and reminds those of us who might have forgotten of this interesting fact:
[I]t's not even true that House Republicans refused to pass legislation lifting the employer mandate. Last month, a majority of House Republicans voted for and passed legislation codifying the administration's delay of the employer mandate, in conjunction with a bill to similarly delay the individual mandate to purchase insurance. A majority of Democrats, meanwhile, voted against both bills. Obama himself threatened to veto both pieces of legislation should they come to his desk.
Suderman also comments on the price of the ticket. This is a point that will be proved in the fullness of time:
Obama also claimed that when the health law opens for enrollment, it will offer individuals who currently do no carry insurance the opportunity to buy plans "at a significantly cheaper rate than what they can get right now on the individual market." That will likely be the case for some number of older and sicker individuals, but it is certainly not true for everyone who might buy insurance through the exchanges. In many states, younger, healthier individuals will end up either paying a penalty or buying plans that are more expensive than the cheapest plans they can buy on the market today. Obamacare's defenders sometimes note that, thanks to the law's benefits rules, plans bought on the exchanges will be more robust than many inexpensive plans are now. For anyone who might be concerned about cost-which, thanks to the mandate requiring people to purchase insurance, could be millions of people-misses the point. More expansive, more expensive coverage is still more expensive.
There's a joke here somewhere. Is it the joke that 57 percent of voters cite as the joke of Obamacare's implementation?

This Is What A Disruptive Technology Looks Like . . .
Posted: 09 Aug 2013 09:38 AM PDT
(Steven Hayward)
. . . in its first moments. Hat tip to FB pal and Power Line reader Kate Pitrone for flagging this old video from 1981, showing the earliest experiments with online news gathering and transmission. I vividly recall seeing the earliest version of FAX technology back in 1981, when my mentor M. Stanton Evans would send his syndicated column to the Los Angeles Times by wrapping each page of the typescript seriatim around a five-inch diameter cylinder, which would then spin at high speed while some kind of early optical character reader would digitize it and transmit it over one of those phone-receiver-in-the-rubber-holster contraptions. It took about ten minutes to send three of four pages through.
When you take in this video now, you can't help but chuckle at how clueless these reporters and editors are about what is about to mow them down. (For one thing, the SF Examiner really doesn't exist any more-not like the form you see in this video.) I think today's equivalently clueless people about to get run over by rapid technological change are college professors and administrators. Anyway, enjoy this two minutes of pure schadenfreude for old media:

I asked Cleta to follow up her comments regarding True The Vote in the video posted in part 1. In the video below Cleta concludes that the IRS has consistently lied about the facts underlying the scandal. Moreover, Cleta asserts (explains), every one of the false IRS statements mimicked by the White House and the Democrats on the investigating congressional committees is likewise a lie. We are inundated with lies. Please attend to what she has to say. She knows what she is talking about.

Cleta Mitchell is the prominent Washington attorney whose practice has given her a front row seat on the IRS scandals. Cleta advises nonprofit and issue organizations, corporations, candidates, campaigns, and individuals on state and federal campaign finance law, election law, and compliance issues related to lobbying, ethics and financial disclosure. Her practice therefore brings her into close contact with the IRS and the FEC. She represents several nonprofit clients that have been victims of the very real misconduct of Obama's IRS. The Wall Street Journal's James Freeman profiled Cleta for the Journal's Weekend Interview series this past June in "Cleta Mitchell: How to investigate the IRS."
On the just completed NR cruise Cleta gave one of the most compelling presentations involving matters of current topical interest. I asked her if she would let me record some of her comments in four short videos. The first is below.
I asked Cleta how she was introduced to the IRS scandals: "What opened the window onto the IRS's misconduct for you?" Please attend to what she has to say. She knows what she is talking about.

A few NR cruise notes
Posted: 09 Aug 2013 05:08 AM PDT
(Scott Johnson)
We returned from our National Review cruise of the Norwegian fjords yesterday afternoon. I want to offer a few notes for interested readers. We loved the cruise for all the obvious reason. The programming was great and our fellow NR cruisers were outstanding. We met people we liked every day. The cruise is expensive and many of the cruisers are retired or of retirement age, but its therapeutic value all by itself is considerable.
We met PL readers Carole W. and Jane W. at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on our arrival. They went out of their way to say hello. Carole and Jane became friends as commenters on Tom Maguire's excellent Just One Minute site. Tom has a good thing going there.
On the first full day at sea I spoke with the Ethics and Public Policy Center's brilliant Ed Whelan, NR's Ramesh Ponnuru and John Fund, and popular columnist Cal Thomas on a panel moderated by Hillsdale College's John Miller about the Supreme Court's 2012-13 term. Ed and I talked about the Court's two gay marriage cases. We did not award the Court high marks.
It was of course a friendly audience. One Catholic clergyman designated Monsignor as well as other NR cruisers went out of their way to express appreciation for what I had to say afterwards. The prominent attorney Cleta Mitchell, about whom more below, was on board to speak with my daughter Eliana on a panel about the IRS scandals. Cleta gave me a warm hug after the panel. She couldn't have been nicer.
Eliana interviewed James O'Keefe in a late-night session that included a greatest hits series of his video exposés. He made an impression. After the program O'Keefe sold out of his memoir/manifesto.
We all went up to the Crow's Nest bar for drinks following the program. We found NR's Jim Geraghty to be even funnier in person than he is online. On a semi-comic historical note, Jim observed that Eliana and I constituted the first father-daughter tag team in NR cruise program history.
Of the panels on topical subjects, the IRS scandals panel with Cleta Mitchell, Eliana and Andrew Stiles might have been the best. I sought out Cleta to record four short videos with her on the subject, the first of which will be in an adjacent post. Please stay tuned.
The NR all stars featured in the programming on board constituted a killer lineup. The panel on the state of Great Britain featured Paul Johnson, Anthony Daniels (Theodore Dalrymple), John O'Sullivan, David Pryce-Jones and Daniel Hannan, with Jay Nordlinger moderating. Their intellect and knowledge are almost unbelievable. What a privilege to hear them out.
In retrospect, I wish the panel had been recorded on a DVD and offered as a premium for new or renewed NR subscriptions, as used to be done with Bill Buckley's new books. I think a lot of readers would have jumped at that offer.
Jay also moderated a discussion of Margaret Thatcher with Paul Johnson and John O'Sullivan. Johnson said that when he met David Ben-Gurion in 1948, Ben-Gurion urged Johnson to read the Hebrew Bible straight through. Johnson said he passed the recommendation on to Thatcher and that she took it up.
Seeing Paul Johnson caused many of us to reflect what an impact Modern Times had on us when we read it back in the early 1980s. A conservative friend who thought Rob Long insufficiently conservative at the time persuaded Rob to read it and Rob says he found it astonishing. It had the intended effect on Rob and it had that effect on a lot of us.
Speaking of astonishment, we toured the fjords that the Eurodam visited. At Haugesund I visited what I uncharitably and probably unfairly thought might be the world's worst World War II museum. Nevertheless, I learned some things there and resolved to learn more about the course of World War II in Scandinavia. I was turned off by our guide's incredibly slow pace and enthusiasm for the Norwegian welfare state, in roughly that order.
At one of the fjord stops we were met by expatriate American Kevin M. of Cupp Computing. Kevin lives and works in southern Norway and had arranged to meet up with Jonah Goldberg, whom he declared his Justin Bieber. Kevin drove Jonah up to meet Rich Lowry, who was on a tour of the town with us. Rich in turn introduced Kevin to me.
Kevin professed himself a huge Power Line fan. Demonstrating his skills as a clinician, Rich diagnosed my reaction to Kevin's effusions as "glowing" (photo below). Incidentally, Rich announced that each stop along our moderately interesting walking tour that morning was a UNESCO world heritage site. Norway has a lot of them.
I was interested in visiting Norway in part because Minnesota and the Dakotas have benefited so much from the migration of many talented and hard-working Norwegians to the United States. When I told John Hinderaker that I would be going on the cruise, he alluded to his Norwegian roots, declaring: "I should be going." I wondered before we left if our brief visit to Norway might provide me any clues about the causes of Norwegian emigration to the United States. On that subject I remain in the dark.
I could go on - and if encouraged, I will - but I'm afraid that is more than enough for now.
An Amsterdam footnote: Amsterdam was the point of departure. We toured the city for three days before the cruise and greatly enjoyed it, as I hope I conveyed in my pre-cruise posts. We didn't see much evidence of the Muslim immigration that is transforming the Netherlands, but in the Holland America Eurodam's excellent library I happened onto The Secret Servant, Daniel Silva's 2007 entry in his Gabriel Allon series of spy thrillers. I greatly enjoyed the book and recommend it to readers who appreciate the genre.
I picked the book up because it begins in Amsterdam and I was curious about Silva's take on the city. He portrays Amsterdam as a hotbed of Islamic radicalism along with Copenhagen and Paris, but places the locus of Europe's Islamic radicalism in London.
I've wondered where Silva stands on the political spectrum and was intrigued by the credits in his acknowledgements. Silva packs a lot of political incorrectness into one sentence: "While Europe Slept by Bruce Bawer and Menace in Europe by Claire Berlinski helped sharpen my thoughts on the dilemma facing Europe today, especially the Netherlands, while Londonistan by Melanie Phillips gave me a deeper understanding of the crisis now confronting Great Britain." Silva didn't have to mention these keen analysts of the threat posed to Europe by the evils of Islamism. That he does so says something good about him.
UPDATE: Jim Geraghty covers one of the cruise highlights here.

Like Freedom? Support the Freedom Club!
Posted: 08 Aug 2013 07:21 PM PDT
(John Hinderaker)
I am a long-time member and former President of the Freedom Club of Minnesota. The Freedom Club is one of the most effective, dynamic conservative organizations I know of. It has done more to identify and promote conservative political candidates in Minnesota than any other group, and to the extent conservatism has made political inroads in a traditionally blue state (for philosophical inroads, see the Center of the American Experiment), the Freedom Club deserves, and gets, most of the credit.
What I always say about conservative organizations is: not only do we do the Lord's work, we have an awful lot of fun! Which we did last week at the Freedom Club's annual Summer dinner, hosted by one of our members. This video conveys in a cheerful way what the club is all about. Not only that, it features my wife!
If you live in or near Minnesota and can afford (despite the Obama economy) to make a contribution to the cause of freedom that is not de minimis but not unreasonable either, I would urge you, as I have many of my friends, to join the Freedom Club. If you don't live in Minnesota or can't spring for a membership, you can still contribute to the club's work by going here. Contributions of any size are happily accepted. When the GOP swept both houses of Minnesota's legislature in 2010, the Freedom Club, with its assiduous data gathering and carefully targeted expenditures, got most of the credit. We lost in 2012, swamped by the quadrennial DFL turnout, but are gearing up now for 2014. I don't think there is a more efficient place to put your conservative dollars than the Freedom Club, so please do consider a contribution.
And if your state doesn't have something like the Freedom Club, it should! For information about how to duplicate the club's success, write to info@freedomclub.mn.

Taxpayers to Pay For Congress's Obamacare Coverage Along With Their Own Coverage
Posted by Dave Jolly
Now I know why Rep. Nancy Pelosi keeps claiming that Obamacare is working at lowering insurance costs. On Wednesday, the Office of Personnel Management announced that the government will pay every member of Congress and thousands of staff members a subsidy to be used towards their purchase of health insurance through the exchanges established by Obamacare. Currently, they are covered through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. However, an amendment that was added to the Affordable Care Act would change that and it's not setting well with liberal members of Congress. When the Democrats were trying to push Obamacare through Congress in 2009, some Republicans balked and said that if the program was good enough for Americans then it should be good enough for Congress and their staff. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) attached an amendment to the Affordable Care Act that would make the program apply to Congress as well. Democrats were so eager to get the massive bill passed that they accepted Grassley's amendment. Now that the insurance mandate is looming before us, a number of politicians and their staff are claiming it's unfair that they have to abide by the same mandate facing all of America. Some even claimed that the loss of the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program would leave thousands of congressional staff without insurance, causing many of them to leave their positions in search of other employment. Congress feared a brain drain would result with the loss of so many staff members. Therefore, the Office of Personnel Management, a division of the federal government ruled that all 535 members of Congress and their staff would receive a federal subsidy to help them purchase health coverage under the Obamacare exchange program. The rest of America doesn't get any subsidy or help with their purchase of health coverage, rather we face a tax penalty if we're not covered. Not only are we forced to pay for our own coverage, but we will also be paying for those subsidies that Congress and their staff will receive.
