PORTLAND, Maine -  The Navy has decided that it will not repair the nuclear-powered submarine USS Miami after concluding that the cost of repairing damage from a fire set by a civilian worker is more than it can afford due to mandated budget cuts.

The decision to scrap the Groton, Conn.-based sub comes after a damage assessment by the Navy found that estimated repair costs, originally estimated to be about $450 million, have risen dramatically, a Navy official told The Military Times.

Rear Adm. Rick Breckenridge, director of undersea warfare, said Tuesday that repairing the submarine would have meant canceling work on dozens of other ships because of new budget constraints. He said that would've hurt the Navy's overall readiness.

Oprah Winfrey made headlines on Monday after saying that in her mind, the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till are the "same thing."

Glenn Beck responded on his television program Tuesday with a thorough overview of both cases, saying Winfrey's comments are a "slap in the face to the memory of Emmett Till and anyone who suffered during segregation and the Civil Rights era."

"These are two cases that have nothing in common," Beck said.  "I can't think what they have in common, honestly."

Beck began by recapping some of the details of the Trayvon Martin case, which are likely familiar to many at this point.  He noted that Zimmerman, who fatally shot Martin in 2012 in what a jury recently ruled was self-defense, had multiple head injuries and a broken nose after his encounter with Martin.  He also noted that both the prosecution and the defense said race played no role in the case, among other things.

Emmett Till, on the other hand, was a 14-year-old African American from Chicago who was tracked down, then mercilessly tortured and murdered after flirting with a white woman.

On October 1st, millions of Americans will be required to enroll in Obamacare and could lose access to their doctors and be forced to pay higher premiums and higher taxes. But there's still time to stop it. Republicans in Congress can stop Obamacare if they refuse to fund it.

 The Federal Government effectively 'bribed' the State apparatus to adopt the Common Core using federal stimulus money, and they did so 'behind the scenes' without any significant public debate. There hasn't been any means testing to ensure that the standards are successful in the classroom. Finally, only 1 out of 60 content experts who reviewed the Common Core were teachers, and no proof was provided that their feedback was received, or their changes reflected in the final standards.

Common Core is a huge issue for our schools and students as well as the taxpayers. The cost of implementing Common Core Standards (CCS) in PA will be $650 million or more over seven years at a time when we are facing a severe pension crisis. The PA legislature was bypassed when PA signed on to the CCS. There is no evidence that this costly and transformational initiative will result in better learning outcomes. In addition, we believe that we will lose local control over our school boards and over the education of our students.

For our August meeting we will have a Common Core post card writing blitz and we urge you all to join in the effort. VFP will supply pre-stamped post cards, as well as bullet points to write and addresses of legislators. This is a nationwide effort that we are coordinating with Pennsylvanians Against Common Core.

It is most important that we contact and continue to contact legislators since this Common Core initiative is already being implemented. Of course, the leftist teachers unions will be spaming mail, probably on the clock as usual. If you have kids, grandkids, neices and nephews you need to care about this. The VFP has joined a statewide Common Core letter/post card writing blitz.  At our meeting this Friday, August 9 we will begin this campaign.

Here is how it works.

We picked a week, the week of August 11, but we will start writing Friday. The goal is to mail 50 letters/cards a day to Harrisburg during the six day week.

We are going to be doing post cards but you may do a letter if you prefer. 10 people write and send 5 cards Monday, 10 more  do 5 cards on Tuesday, and on through the rest of the week. Ideally, that would be 60 people for the week doing 5 cards for six days.

I will be preparing handouts with Common Core bullet points to write and the addresses where the cards will be sent. You will be asked to send to at least 5 addresses on the list, more if possible. Since the legislators are on recess. the cards will go to district offices.

I also have some preprinted post cards that we can use but hand written works best.

WHAT IS COMMON CORE?

Common Core, or the Common Core State Standards Initative (CCSSI), as it is known at the State and Federal level, is a set of national education standards that will fulfill the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, through a waiver system. (The NCLB Act was put into place by Congress in 2001 and signed into law by President George W. Bush). Many states were failing to meet the NCLB Act requirements and, therefore, wanted something to replace NCLB.Common Core is part of the UN's plan for complete federal control over our education systems and the "Dumbing-down" of America.

 

Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) are not state standards in the first place, and are nothing more then further federalization of our state education systems.

 

COMMON CORE IS A TROJAN HORSE AND TIED TO THE UNITED NATIONS (UN)

If you cannot see that Common Core is tied to the United Nations you have not done your homework! The major funder of the Common Core Movement is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which has pledged $60 million dollars to this effort. Bill and Melinda Gates are tied to UN through-and-through and have spent money in America and overseas for UN programs in Africa and all over the world for decades.

From the Conservative Teachers of American organization, they wrote an article entitled: "Common Core Standards and the Federalization of Education." In this article we read: "Many are concerned that the Common Core Standards, once successfully implemented, will provide unfettered access of our educational system by the United Nations. Some textbooks and curricula for our public schools have already been written by the [United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization] UNESCO and the International Baccalaureate program, that is currently in many school districts, across the United States. Grabbing additional access is a natural next step. Once they write the curricula, they must have authority to develop all testing tools."

 

The UN involvement in the American educational system has already been facilitated by treaties signed by American presidents from both parties. Those documents include but are not limited to: Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Treaty on the Rights of the Child, Civic Education: Classroom Connections, and Agenda 21.

 

The  US Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development (since 2003), is the nexus of the UNA-USA and Global Leadership Coalition at the Department of Education, which altogether leverages the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014.  UNESCO, the lead agency of the Decade, defines Education for Sustainable Development as "education for everyone everywhere" for the "lifelong learning" of "present and future generations".  

 

The UNA-USA sponsors Model UN across America and tailors its Global Classrooms curricula to whichever setting the kids happen to be participating.  Children are unknowingly trained to respond with prescribed consensus to the situations, simulations and stimulation's of the particular activity (Delphi Technique).  Global Kids is the CFR arm of Connect All Schools Consortium, a new Department of Education network, led by Independent Sector and The White House via United Planet Partners.  Global Kids is preparing children for Agenda 21.  

 

The White House, NSA and CIA now have website divisions aimed at kids.  The Public Education Network is a national association funded by Independent Sector donors: plus Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Department of Education

 

"Funders" of the Rockefeller Foundation-backed International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), "Members" of the the Sustainability Consortium, backed by the EPA and BSR (Rockefeller Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, State Department) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-backed International City/County Management Association (ICMA): Center for Sustainable Communities (an ICLEI "Partner") are "partnered" with local schools and governments.  

 

From the Partnership for 21st Century Skills aligning the Common Core State Standards with "professional development" content for teachers and principals and Lego Robotics curricula for students (Carnegie Mellon/Lego Education); to software curricula through websites like: cyberschoolbus.un.org, icivics.org, atomiclearning.com, renlearn.org, brainpop.com and ttl4.sunburst.com; to the weekly deliveries of Time for Kids magazine and textbook curricula into classrooms; kids are programmed with UN-defined values.  State Governors administer Federal funds to "Community-Oriented Policing" systems like Crime Stoppers (The UN, FBI and other law enforcement and corporate partners administer Crime Stoppers International), the local student-equivalent of the Department of Homeland Security's' "See Something, Say Something" campaign; whereby children see hand-drawn posters of child characters on school walls displaying "Eyes Looking", "Ears Listening", "Mouth Reporting" with a hotline to call.  Presidents Bush and Obama have personally followed the George H. W. Bush/Clinton trail of the Agenda 21/ Sustainable America megabanks-maze in "bipartisan" fashion. 

 

UNESCO PLEDGES SUPPORT OF COMMON CORE

From UNESCO's document "The Vision of Education Reform in the United States" it states: "My department has been pleased to partner with the US Agency for International Development to help ensure that our best domestic practices are shared world-wide. The United States provides over a billion dollars annually to partner countries working on educational reform. Our goal for the coming year will be to work closely with global partners, including UNESCO, to promote qualitative improvements and system strengthening....Ultimately, education is the great equalizer. It is the one force that can consistently overcome differences in background, culture, and privilege."

 

THE UN'S AGENDA 21- COMMON CORE IMPLEMENTER!

In the United Nations Agenda 21 (Guide for the 21st Century), Chapters #25 and #36 specifically talk about education of our children:

 

Principle #25- "Children and Youth in Sustainable Development." In the "Activites 25.9.d" it states: "Ensure access for all youth to all types of education, wherever appropriate, providing alternative learning structures, ensure that education reflects the economic and social needs of youth and incorporates the concepts of environmental training, implementing innovative methods aimed at increasing practical skills, such as environmental scouting."

 

Principle #36- "Promoting Education, Public Awareness and Training." In the Activities Section of this document in "36.5.g" we read: "Within two years the United Nations system should undertake a comprehensive review of its educational programmes, encompassing training and public awareness, to reassess priorites and reallocae resources. The UNESCO/UNEP International Environmental Education Programme should, in cooperation with the appropriate bodies of the United Nations system, Governments, non-governmental organizations and others, establish a porgramme within two years to integrate the decisions of the Conference into the existing United Nations framework adapted to the need of the educators at different levels and circumstances. Regional organizations and national authorities should be encouraged to elaborate similar parallel programmes and opportunies by conducting an analysis of how to mobilize different sectors of the population in order to assess and address their environmental and development education needs."

 

In the Activities Section of this document in "36.5 h" we read: "There is a need to strengthen, within five years, information exchange by enhancing technologies and capacities necessary to promote environment and development education and public awareness. Countries should cooperate with each other and with the various social sectors and population groups to prepare educational tools that include regional environment and development issues and initiatives, using learning materials and resources suited to their own requirements." Sounds just like PARCC and SLDS. ASU's Institute for Global Sustainability and their "Sustainable Cities Network" is doing a fine job "brain-washing" our students in our high schools on sustainability, global warming (aka climate change), etc. Go here to meet the ASU sustainability schools!

A group that allowed this kind of rhetoric to be said at their meeting? I don't think I want them developingeducational standards!  Please read to the bottom for transcripts from the 1987 NGA meetings chaired by Bill Clinton.  These transcripts are eye-opening.  They are clearly more concerned with workers for the manufacturing.  They seem to have concerns that we have students who can't read well enough (non-English speaking especially) to function in the manufacturing plants, and then on the other end of the spectrum... too many with higher ed degrees who don't WANT to work in the manufacturing.  So... what to do about all this?  Hummm.... standards!  Make sure they read well enough to function as the industrial workers, but not so well that they don't want to!!!   This is the John D. Rockefeller goal of the early 20th century when he started pushing for compulsory government schooling and funding the building of government schools.

1987 Annual meeting.   See page 34of this document to see how those governors seem to be concerned that we aren't training our students for the "workforce." June 11, 2013: Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) leads the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee in a markup of the Strengthening America's Schools Act of 2013, an education initiative to replace No Child Left Behind.  http://www.c-spanvideo.org/event/220036

At the June 10 Common Core forum in Fayette County, Superintendent Barge stated over and over again that if Georgia wants to change these standards at any time, we have the ability to do so.   The testimony below contradicts this belief by Superintendent Barge and confirms that states who adopted the Common Core standards DO NOT have the ability to change the standards in any way on their own.

2:23:00 - Rep. Tim Scott discusses his amendment to Harkin's bill.  Instead of states being forced to adopt blanket standards like Common Core as a prerequisite for funding, let's put decision-making back in the hands of parents and teachers in our communities."

2:31:00 - It is admitted that states who want to change the CC standards,the Secretary of Education would have to approve it.  States DO NOT have the ultimate decision making abilities!

2:39:00 - Alexander reads page 89 of the bill stating that any changes to standards MUST go through the Secretary of Education for approval.

As are most of the amendments offered by Republicans to this education bill, the Scott Amendment is defeated 12-10.

DATA COLLECTING: Senator Burr at the 1:00:00 mark reveals information about ADDITIONAL data points that this legislation will add to the data mining.  He says that his count is now 500 data points.  

TEACHER EVALUATIONS: Senator Alexander at 2:00:00 mark discusses his amendment to end federally mandated school and teacher evaluations.  He says states had a "gun to their head" to adopt the teacher evaluations because they were desperate for NCLB waivers.   He makes the charge that the Harkin bill creates a "NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD."  The Gates Foundation involvement is mentioned frequently.  

Harkin says over and over "this is voluntary."  If states don't want to implement the programs in the bill we just don't accept the money!"    More strong evidence that our states need to "just say no" to all federal education dollars.   As is pointed out in this debate: Any private business that entered into a partnership where the partner who contributed 10% funding got 80-90% of the control (as is the case with education funding under NCLB and Common Core) the partnership is DOOMED TO FAIL!

What most Americans expect is to have our borders secure, enforcement of the existing laws within the interior, meaningful punishment of employers who hire illegally and removal of incentives such as birthright citizenships and public school enrollments without status verifications. We must also address the fact that we're soft on criminals caught in crimes and aren't deported. No other country would allow this to continue. 40% of them entered the country legally and overstayed their visas. Yet there's still no reliable method to verify if Visa overstays have left the country. Another incentive that must be addressed is the birthright citizenship program that has resulted in millions of children and parents receiving instant rights and benefits. Some have called them "GPS babies" and this certainly cannot be what the authors of the 14th Amendment intended to occur. Public housing and other benefits are provided for the illegal parents through their 'anchor children' while citizens are turned away because of limited resources. This antiquated program must end. Government agencies and officials at all levels must address the costs associated with this kind of abuse. Past mistakes have been made in attempts to fix illegal immigration and our communities can no longer afford these kinds of mistakes.

Obama is at Two Dozen Scandals and Counting

President Obama claims that Republicans are busy probing "phony scandals." But the sheer number of scandals suggests that misbehavior, abuse of power, and possibly corruption are not something being dreamed up by the GOP, but a defining characteristic of the Obama administration.

Here is a full list of the administration's most egregious scandals. The ones we know about, at least. I've added four since the last time we ran the list - an increase of 20 percent!

1. IRS targets Obama's enemies: The IRS targeted conservative and pro-Israel groups prior to the 2012 election. Questions are being raised about why this occurred, who ordered it, whether there was any White House involvement and whether there was an initial effort to hide who knew about the targeting and when.

2. Benghazi: This is actually three scandals in one:

• The failure of administration to protect the Benghazi mission.
• The changes made to the talking points in order to suggest the attack was motivated by an anti-Muslim video
• The refusal of the White House to say what President Obama did the night of the attack

3. Watching the AP: The Justice Department performed a massive cull of Associated Press reporters' phone records as part of a leak investigation.

4. Rosengate: The Justice Department suggested that Fox News reporter James Rosen is a criminal for reporting about classified information and subsequently monitored his phones and emails.

5. Potential Holder perjury I: Attorney General Eric Holder told Congress he had never been associated with "potential prosecution" of a journalist for perjury when in fact he signed the affidavit that termed Rosen a potential criminal.

6. The ATF "Fast and Furious" scheme: Allowed weapons from the U.S. to "walk" across the border into the hands of Mexican drug dealers. The ATF lost track of hundreds of firearms, many of which were used in crimes, including the December 2010 killing of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

7. Potential Holder Perjury II: Holder told Congress in May 2011 that he had just recently heard about the Fast and Furious gun walking scheme when there is evidence he may have known much earlier.

8. Sebelius demands payment: HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius solicited donations from companies HHS might regulate. The money would be used to help her sign up uninsured Americans for ObamaCare.

9. The Pigford scandal: An Agriculture Department effort that started as an attempt to compensate black farmers who had been discriminated against by the agency but evolved into a gravy train delivering several billion dollars in cash to thousands of additional minority and female farmers who probably didn't face discrimination.

10. GSA gone wild: The General Services Administration in 2010 held an $823,000 training conference in Las Vegas, featuring a clown and a mind readers. Resulted in the resignation of the GSA administrator.

11. Veterans Affairs in Disney World: The agency wasted more than $6 million on two conferences in Orlando. An assistant secretary was fired.

12. Sebelius violates the Hatch Act: A U.S. special counsel determined that Sebelius violated the Hatch Act when she made "extemporaneous partisan remarks" during a speech in her official capacity last year. During the remarks, Sebelius called for the election of the Democratic candidate for governor of North Carolina.

13. Solyndra: Republicans charged the Obama administration funded and promoted its poster boy for green energy despite warning signs the company was headed for bankruptcy. The administration also allegedly pressed Solyndra to delay layoff announcements until after the 2010 midterm elections.

14. AKA Lisa Jackson: Former EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson used the name "Richard Windsor" when corresponding by email with other government officials, drawing charges she was trying to evade scrutiny.

15. The New Black Panthers: The Justice Department was accused of using a racial double standard in failing to pursue a voter intimidation case against Black Panthers who appeared to be menacing voters at a polling place in 2008 in Philadelphia.

16. Waging war all by myself: Obama may have violated the Constitution and both the letter and the spirit of the War Powers Resolution by attacking Libya without Congressional approval.

17. Biden bullies the press: Vice President Biden's office has repeatedly interfered with coverage, including forcing a reporter to wait in a closet, making a reporter delete photos, and editing pool reports.

18. AKPD not A-OK: The administration paid millions to the former firm of then-White House adviser David Axelrod, AKPD Message and Media, to promote passage of Obamacare. Some questioned whether the firm was hired to help pay Axelrod $2 million AKPD owed him.

19. Sestak, we'll take care of you: Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel used Bill Clinton as an intermediary to probe whether former Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) would accept a prominent, unpaid White House advisory position in exchange for dropping out of the 2010 primary against former Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.).

20. I'll pass my own laws: Obama has repeatedly been accused of making end runs around Congress by deciding which laws to enforce, including the decision not to deport illegal immigrants who may have been allowed to stay in the United States had Congress passed the "Dream Act."

21. The hacking of Sharyl Attkisson's computer: It's not clear who hacked the CBS reporter's computer as she investigated the Benghazi scandal, but the Obama administration and its allies had both the motive and the means to do it.

22. An American Political Prisoner: The sudden decision to arrest Nakoula Basseley Nakoula on unrelated charges after protests in the Arab world over his anti-Muslim video is an extraordinarily suspicious coincidence. "We're going to go out and we're going to prosecute the person that made that video," Hillary Clinton allegedly told the father of one of the ex-SEALs killed in Banghazi.

23. Get rid of inconvenient IGs: Corporation for National and Community Service Inspector General Gerald Walpin was fired in 2009 as he fought wasteful spending and investigated a friend of Obama's, Sacramento Mayor and former NBA player Kevin Johnson. The White House says Walpin was incompetent.

24. Influence peddling: An investigation is underway of Alejandro Mayorkas, director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, who has been nominated by Obama for the number two post at the Department of Homeland Security. Mayorkas may have used his position to unfairly obtain U.S. visas for foreign investors in company run by Hillary Clinton's brother, Anthony Rodman.

Planned Parenthood Under Investigation

Responding to a request from more than 70 members of Congress, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has announced that it is launching a formal investigation of Planned Parenthood and other left-wing outfits that promote abortion. The lawmakers want to know exactly how these organizations are using our tax dollars.

Last month, a Planned Parenthood affiliate agreed to pay a $4.3 million fine in order to settle allegations of Medicaid fraud in Texas. As our friends at the Alliance Defending Freedom have documented, the Texas case likely represents a pattern of abuse rather than an isolated incident.

Defunding America's largest abortion provider, also guilty of scamming a program for the poor, seems like a no-brainer when we are cutting defense spending and other important programs. As you may recall, House Republicans tried to defund Planned Parenthood in 2011. But Obama was willing to shut down the government in order to guarantee that your tax dollars continued subsidizing Planned Parenthood.

Thanks to Obama's generosity, Planned Parenthood received more than $540 million of your hard-earned money last year.

Responding to news of the GAO investigation, Senator David Vitter (R-LA) said, "Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide abortions clearly benefit from Uncle Sam, but there's no accounting to prove how they actually use that money. This GAO report would shine a light on how our tax dollars are being spent." We will keep you posted.


Where Is Your Pastor/Priest?

I read a lot of disturbing stories and reports every day, but a press release from the Center for the Study of American Culture and Faith really got my blood boiling. The Center recently conducted a poll of identified "theologically conservative pastors." Folks, if you want to understand why America is in the condition it is, look no further than these results.

According to the findings, just 44% of "theologically conservative pastors" would "definitely provide strong encouragement" to their congregations to vote and to get involved in next year's elections. Another 20% said they "probably" would. Thirty percent said they were not sure and 6% said they would not encourage their congregants to be politically active.

I'm glad to see that 44% of theologically conservative pastors believe it is important for Christians to be active participants in the political process. But given the redefinition of marriage, the assault on religious liberty and the persecution of Christians overseas, it is disturbing that more than one-third, and perhaps as many as one-half, of theologically conservative pastors could be lukewarm about politics and public policy.

Unfortunately, it has been my experience that when you ask many pastors, even those who generally share our worldview, about the importance of civic responsibility, they often respond by saying, "My job is to preach the Gospel." But if you ask them about the silence of many churches in slave states during the 1850s, they will shake their heads in disgust.

President Lincoln worried about pastors who told him that slavery was a political issue. And when he discussed slavery in the public square, Lincoln was often told to keep his religion to himself.

Too many churches were silent in Germany during the 1930s. And when some brave souls like Dietrich Bonheoffer and Martin Niemoeller dared to speak up, Hitler told them to take care of their churches and leave Germany to him.

This country was founded by pilgrims seeking religious liberty. It has a tremendous religious heritage. Religious liberty was so important to our Founding Fathers that they listed it in the first amendment to the Constitution.

But when so many pastors are sitting silently on the sidelines of the culture war, we risk losing those first freedoms while America is fundamentally transformed into something our Founders would not recognize.

My friends, we can't place all the blame at someone else's feet. Each of us is responsible for our own actions, for what we do or don't do to save this republic.

I know it's August and many folks are on vacation, having fun with friends and family. It also that means our senators and representatives have left Washington for an extended break. The politicians are back home for town hall meetings.

Left-wing groups are making no secret of their plans to disrupt town hall events and pack them with pro-amnesty supporters, hoping to create the appearance of public support for their agenda. That's where you come in!

Take a moment to find out if your representative is holding public events in your community. (You can use our online Congressional Directory to find contact information for your representative's district offices.)

Please attend these events. Firmly, but politely, push back against the liberals who might be there. It may encourage others who share your values to speak up too!

If you are uncomfortable speaking in front of a large group of people, then wait until the end of the meeting. Often members of Congress will work the room for a while, briefly speaking with folks one-on-one as they head out. Use that opportunity to press your case.

This is your country too. We cannot surrender the political arena to the left!

2.  SOURCES: NRSC and DSCC Declare Truce on Obamacare Exemption for Staffers

Sources in the Senate tell me that, on orders from senior Senate leaders, the NRSC and DSCC, the two groups responsible for electing Republicans and Democrats in the Senate, have declared a truce over the Office of Personnel Management ("OPM") exemption of Capitol Hill staff from one of the provisions of Obamacare.

In other words, Republican Leaders have agreed the NRSC will not use this issue to put Democrats in a difficult re-election position in 2014, because Republican leaders do not intend to fight it and don't want a spotlight on them doing so.

She joined the long line of Democrats before her to oppose legislation to protect other people while using property rights arguments to do so.

"Judicial Supremacy is the gospel of modern American constitutional law." (1) It is the dishonest method whereby the nation's highest court may create-or recreate-the supreme law of the land with each successive decision.

About 225 years ago, the Constitution was ratified after the adoption of the Bill of Rights. It was from the beginning a document written not for the judiciary or the legal elite, but by and for the American people. Look at the Preamble: "We the People of the United States" it begins. The preamble of a legal document in 1787 identified the parties involved and explained the purpose of the instrument. In the Constitution, the Framers decided to follow long held practice of Royal Charters by identifying the "grantor" in "large, majestic letters." Dear Jolt Reader,

There's a whole lot of love swirling around today - from the first of Jim's five reasons to love modern politics (see below) to Lee Habeeb's column on how conservatives might use the word "love" to change our political and cultural landscape. An example (one of many) from Lee: "We believe that no government worker can love a child the way his parents can, and yet we still can't say the word." Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

And now we interrupt this message to return to scandal. Where to begin?

It must be good to work for Congress, even better to be a congressman. Job security, a pension, health care. Oh wait, Obamacare instructed that they too (members and staff) had to join the exchanges and pay for their plans out of pocket. Not to worry, Obama to the rescue! Both groups, even as every other American's health-care costs are on the rise, will receive funding to pay for their health-care plans - even though the law doesn't provide for it. Now the whole lot of them are indebted to the president. Michael Cannon has the story.

Benghazi-gate. IRS-gate. NSA-gate. The "gates" are beginning to pile up. Obama often compares himself to Lincoln, JFK, Reagan . . . really any president that a majority of the country believes was great. But in reality, Victor Davis Hanson lays out the argument for why Obama's true presidential soulmate is . . . Richard Nixon.

Something Worth Loving About Washington, Part One: Hooray for Youthful Idealism!

One of the frustrating aspects of This Town is that, for all of the spectacular, detailed reporting, you feel like Mark Leibovich is giving you an intricate detailed portrait of city by focusing on one street, and not a particularly representative one, either. Again, I haven't finished the book, but I suspect most readers will finish and conclude that Washington, D.C. - and by extension the world of national politics, those who work in it, those who cover it, and those who care about it - is a horrible place full of horrible people doing horrible things to each other, who only get more horrible over time, and who spend their time at horrible parties lamenting how horrible the people who weren't invited are.

Yes, in Washington, horrible people do horrible things to each other. It's also home to oodles of military families, cops, firefighters, charity volunteers, good neighbors, good teachers, and millions of people who never attend a party at Tammy Haddad's house.

Hey, everybody's flawed. But let me take a moment to stand up for the people idealistic enough - perhaps naïve enough, or foolish enough! - to come to Washington in their first suit with a printed-out resume eager to change the world.

A preview of my novel coming out next June, describing the view of a protagonist who arrives in the nation's capital in the early 1990s:

Like many in Washington, Ava was smart, and also like many, restless and eager to leave a mark on the world. If you were young and wanted to make a lot of money, you majored in finance and set your sights on Wall Street. If you craved fame, you set out for Hollywood; rumor had it they were handing out sitcoms to stand-up comedians at LAX. If you wanted to invent some amazing new gadget or tool, you went to Redmond, Washington or Silicon Valley. But if you came to Washington, you were driven by something bigger.

The focus of that drive could be almost anything - abortion, foreign policy, the environment, economics. Young people in Washington tended to know a bit, or even a lot, about something beyond themselves and the pop culture of the moment. The twentysomethings of the nation's capital tended to be a little more interesting to talk to than their flannel-wearing peers elsewhere, who had dreams of fame and fortune but little sense of how to get them.

To the rest of the country, Washington was boring and stuffy; to the young people inside the Beltway, it was Nerd-vana, an endangered species preserve for geeks. It was a national dumping ground for all the folks who cared a lot about things that most people didn't care about much at all - the rights of women in Afghanistan, or the habitat of the snail-darter, or aggressive Chinese naval maneuvers off Taiwan, or suburban sprawl, or early childhood foreign language education, or the homeless.

People come to Washington to work. It's not a beach town, or necessarily a fun place to relax. It is the opposite of laid back. I understand why folks from other parts of the country lament that Washington isn't friendly. (I think D.C. folks are positively cuddly kittens compared to New Yorkers, but maybe my perception is shaped by the bygone days when New Yorkers would riot if a mayor tried to take away their large sodas.) It is indeed a city of northern charm and southern efficiency. But if you want a culture that is gracious and mannerly like the South, or Minnesota nice, or California cool . . . well, they have those places. This city is for the workaholics, and if you enjoy your work, you'll find a lot of other people who have the same attitude.
