I wanted to alert you to a special live-streamed member's meeting of the House Republican Study Committee, some of our best friends in the U.S. Congress, on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 2:00PM Eastern Daylight Time.
The meeting will feature a lengthy and intense discussion of the abuses of power of the Obama Administration and its failures to enforce the law as written ~ from IRS political discrimination, to delaying the ObamaCare employer mandate set in statute, and so on. The discussion is expected to include some of the senators who have played leading roles in these issues present in the room.

Obama Gives Money To Syrian Rebels Who Behead Innocent Christians

Obama sure does love to spread the wealth around.
Now he's giving our hard-earned tax dollars to Syrian rebels, who have been violently killing innocent Christian civilians and using 14-year-old children to carry out their brutal plans. Many of the murdered Christians have been beheaded in public sessions that are attended by a cheering crowd.
The worst part? No one seems to care. Obama has barely been questioned about his administration's financial support for the al-Qaeda linked Syrians.
The story has even been reported in the mainstream media, but still, not many people seem to care or share the story on social media. Just last month, The Washington Times ran a headline that said, "Syrians behead Christians for helping military, as CIA ships in arms."
The story said, "A priest and
another Christian were beheaded before a cheering crowd by Syrian insurgents who say they aided and abetted the enemy... The reported beheading of the two Christians comes about the same time America has started sending arms to rebel fighters, the Wall Street Journal revealed this week."Still, this shocking report did not generate much interest from the public.
Petition for White House to Declare Muslim Brotherhood a Terrorist Group Gains Enough Signatures to Force Response

A petition on the White House's "We the People" portal asking the Obama administration to "Declare [the] Muslim Brotherhood organization as a terrorist group" has gained enough signatures that the White House must now respond.
According to the site's terms of participation, a petition has to cross a threshold of 100,000 within 30 days in order to "require a response" from the White House.
"Muslim Brotherhood has a long history of violent killings & terrorizing opponents," the petition states. "Also MB has direct ties with most terrorist groups like Hamas."

Some pro-Democratic groups plan to make trouble for select Republicans at their town halls during the coming August recess, the Huffington Post reports.
Americans United for Change is launching the Accountable Congress web site to notify progressive activists when Republicans hold events in their area, according to Salon.
The site includes progressive talking points on issues such as immigration, climate change, and gun violence, as well as possible questions to ask Republican lawmakers.

Talking about the scandals, President Obama says the scandals are phony. Why do you think he says they're phony? Because he believes it, or is there a strategy?
RUSH: No, there's a strategy. You know, I've been troubled by something with Obama. You know, I playfully call it the "Regime," 'cause I know it irritates 'em. But it is, it's like a regime. And I've been troubled, I've been amazed. Here is a man whose policies have done great damage to this country, policies that have done great damage to the economy, have done great damage to the American culture, to the American psyche. I mean, there is a malaise, there's a sense of hopelessness and depression out there and it's his policies that have done this, and what has always amazed me is how he's not attached to any of it.
He has an agenda, he's been implementing it, but the what I call the low-information voters who voted for him and other Democrats do not associate Obama's policies and agenda with the condition of the country, the economy or whatever. That's always befuddled me. I've never, never known a president to be immune from economic circumstances at an election as he was in 2012. It all became clear to me, there was a New York Times story, I think one of their blog posts on the Web back in February, and it basically said via poll data what I just said to you. It said most people disapprove of the Obama agenda. They don't like the direction the country's going. They like him and they think he's great for the country. And I said, "How can that be?"

The Federal Government effectively 'bribed' the State apparatus to adopt the Common Core using federal stimulus money, and they did so 'behind the scenes' without any significant public debate. There hasn't been any means testing to ensure that the standards are successful in the classroom. Finally, only 1 out of 60 content experts who reviewed the Common Core were teachers, and no proof was provided that their feedback was received, or their changes reflected in the final standards.

Common Core is a huge issue for our schools and students as well as the taxpayers. The cost of implementing Common Core Standards (CCS) in PA will be $650 million or more over seven years at a time when we are facing a severe pension crisis. The PA legislature was bypassed when PA signed on to the CCS. There is no evidence that this costly and transformational initiative will result in better learning outcomes. In addition, we believe that we will lose local control over our school boards and over the education of our students.
For our August meeting we will have a Common Core post card writing blitz and we urge you all to join in the effort. VFP will supply pre-stamped post cards, as well as bullet points to write and addresses of legislators. This is a nationwide effort that we are coordinating with Pennsylvanians Against Common Core.
It is most important that we contact and continue to contact legislators since this Common Core initiative is already being implemented. Of course, the leftist teachers unions will be spaming mail, probably on the clock as usual. If you have kids, grandkids, neices and nephews you need to care about this. Hope to see you there with your writing utensils.
Gun Control groups like Mayor Bloombergs CeasefirePA are still pushing hard to further "question" our right to Keep and Bear Arms! Just this week CeasefirePA testified at the PA Judiciary Committee hearing on HB1010 to expand background checks (next step towards registration). And the Bloomberg anti-gun bus tour continues across the USA with a likely stop in PA in the next 60 days. The recent Zimmerman trial verdict has given these anti-liberty groups a renewed energy to pass more incremental gun control laws.

Controversy is swirling about the new Common Core national standards, which are designed to transform K-12 education in English language arts and math.
Especially in the area of math, Common Core proponents insist that it is the only way to address the problem of lagging achievement by American students. But the Common Core math standards fall far short of what students need for more advanced work.
In some ways Common Core amounts to a massive experiment with our children - an experiment we think the states would be wise to reconsider.
Most educators would agree that mathematical education in the U.S. is in crisis, and that the reason is the way math is currently taught. But Common Core does nothing to address this problem. And in fact, in many areas the national standards are fully as poor as the standards of the weakest states.
Hidden in Common Core is the real objective - presenting the minimal amount of material that high-school graduates need to be able to enter the work force in an entry-level job.
One of Common Core's most glaring deficiencies is its handling of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers.
Remember "fuzzy math"? It's back with a vengeance under Common Core.
Common Core, or the Common Core State Standards Initative (CCSSI), as it is known at the State and Federal level, is a set of national education standards that will fulfill the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, through a waiver system. (The NCLB Act was put into place by Congress in 2001 and signed into law by President George W. Bush). Many states were failing to meet the NCLB Act requirements and, therefore, wanted something to replace NCLB.Common Core is part of the UN's plan for complete federal control over our education systems and the "Dumbing-down" of America.

If you cannot see that Common Core is tied to the United Nations you have not done your homework! The major funder of the Common Core Movement is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which has pledged $60 million dollars to this effort. Bill and Melinda Gates are tied to UN through-and-through and have spent money in America and overseas for UN programs in Africa and all over the world for decades.
From the Conservative Teachers of American organization, they wrote an article entitled: "Common Core Standards and the Federalization of Education." In this article we read: "Many are concerned that the Common Core Standards, once successfully implemented, will provide unfettered access of our educational system by the United Nations. Some textbooks and curricula for our public schools have already been written by the [United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization] UNESCO and the International Baccalaureate program, that is currently in many school districts, across the United States. Grabbing additional access is a natural next step. Once they write the curricula, they must have authority to develop all testing tools."
The UN involvement in the American educational system has already been facilitated by treaties signed by American presidents from both parties. Those documents include but are not limited to: Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Treaty on the Rights of the Child, Civic Education: Classroom Connections, and Agenda 21.
The US Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development (since 2003), is the nexus of the UNA-USA and Global Leadership Coalition at the Department of Education, which altogether leverages the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014. UNESCO, the lead agency of the Decade, defines Education for Sustainable Development as "education for everyone everywhere" for the "lifelong learning" of "present and future generations".
The UNA-USA sponsors Model UN across America and tailors its Global Classrooms curricula to whichever setting the kids happen to be participating. Children are unknowingly trained to respond with prescribed consensus to the situations, simulations and stimulation's of the particular activity (Delphi Technique). Global Kids is the CFR arm of Connect All Schools Consortium, a new Department of Education network, led by Independent Sector and The White House via United Planet Partners. Global Kids is preparing children for Agenda 21.
The White House, NSA and CIA now have website divisions aimed at kids. The Public Education Network is a national association funded by Independent Sector donors: plus Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Department of Education
From the Partnership for 21st Century Skills aligning the Common Core State Standards with "professional development" content for teachers and principals and Lego Robotics curricula for students (Carnegie Mellon/Lego Education); to software curricula through websites like: cyberschoolbus.un.org, icivics.org, atomiclearning.com, renlearn.org, brainpop.com and ttl4.sunburst.com; to the weekly deliveries of Time for Kids magazine and textbook curricula into classrooms; kids are programmed with UN-defined values. State Governors administer Federal funds to "Community-Oriented Policing" systems like Crime Stoppers (The UN, FBI and other law enforcement and corporate partners administer Crime Stoppers International), the local student-equivalent of the Department of Homeland Security's' "See Something, Say Something" campaign; whereby children see hand-drawn posters of child characters on school walls displaying "Eyes Looking", "Ears Listening", "Mouth Reporting" with a hotline to call. Presidents Bush and Obama have personally followed the George H. W. Bush/Clinton trail of the Agenda 21/ Sustainable America megabanks-maze in "bipartisan" fashion.

From UNESCO's document "The Vision of Education Reform in the United States" it states: "My department has been pleased to partner with the US Agency for International Development to help ensure that our best domestic practices are shared world-wide. The United States provides over a billion dollars annually to partner countries working on educational reform. Our goal for the coming year will be to work closely with global partners, including UNESCO, to promote qualitative improvements and system strengthening....Ultimately, education is the great equalizer. It is the one force that can consistently overcome differences in background, culture, and privilege."
Principle #25- "Children and Youth in Sustainable Development." In the "Activites 25.9.d" it states: "Ensure access for all youth to all types of education, wherever appropriate, providing alternative learning structures, ensure that education reflects the economic and social needs of youth and incorporates the concepts of environmental training, implementing innovative methods aimed at increasing practical skills, such as environmental scouting."
Principle #36- "Promoting Education, Public Awareness and Training." In the Activities Section of this document in "36.5.g" we read: "Within two years the United Nations system should undertake a comprehensive review of its educational programmes, encompassing training and public awareness, to reassess priorites and reallocae resources. The UNESCO/UNEP International Environmental Education Programme should, in cooperation with the appropriate bodies of the United Nations system, Governments, non-governmental organizations and others, establish a porgramme within two years to integrate the decisions of the Conference into the existing United Nations framework adapted to the need of the educators at different levels and circumstances. Regional organizations and national authorities should be encouraged to elaborate similar parallel programmes and opportunies by conducting an analysis of how to mobilize different sectors of the population in order to assess and address their environmental and development education needs."
In the Activities Section of this document in "36.5 h" we read: "There is a need to strengthen, within five years, information exchange by enhancing technologies and capacities necessary to promote environment and development education and public awareness. Countries should cooperate with each other and with the various social sectors and population groups to prepare educational tools that include regional environment and development issues and initiatives, using learning materials and resources suited to their own requirements." Sounds just like PARCC and SLDS. ASU's Institute for Global Sustainability and their "Sustainable Cities Network" is doing a fine job "brain-washing" our students in our high schools on sustainability, global warming (aka climate change), etc. Go here to meet the ASU sustainability schools!

They seem to have concerns that we have students who can't read well enough (non-English speaking especially) to function in the manufacturing plants, and then on the other end of the spectrum... too many with higher ed degrees who don't WANT to work in the manufacturing. So... what to do about all this? Hummm.... standards! Make sure they read well enough to function as the industrial workers, but not so well that they don't want to!!! This is the John D. Rockefeller goal of the early 20th century when he started pushing for compulsory government schooling and funding the building of government schools.

2:39:00 - Alexander reads page 89 of the bill stating that any changes to standards MUST go through the Secretary of Education for approval. As are most of the amendments offered by Republicans to this education bill, the Scott Amendment is defeated 12-10.
DATA COLLECTING: Senator Burr at the 1:00:00 mark reveals information about ADDITIONAL data points that this legislation will add to the data mining.He says that his count is now 500 data points.
TEACHER EVALUATIONS: Senator Alexander at 2:00:00 mark discusses his amendment to end federally mandated school and teacher evaluations. He says states had a "gun to their head" to adopt the teacher evaluations because they were desperate for NCLB waivers. He makes the charge that the Harkin bill creates a "NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD." The Gates Foundation involvement is mentioned frequently.
Harkin says over and over "this is voluntary." If states don't want to implement the programs in the bill we just don't accept the money!" More strong evidence that our states need to "just say no" to all federal education dollars. As is pointed out in this debate: Any private business that entered into a partnership where the partner who contributed 10% funding got 80-90% of the control (as is the case with education funding under NCLB and Common Core) the partnership is DOOMED TO FAIL!

Sustainable Development is code for a policy designed to transform human society, essentially eliminating individual life decisions and replacing them with top - down, one-size-fits-all government control. In steady fashion, the agenda for this new policy, designed at the international level, is put into place piece by piece with a new government council here, and new regulation there, each designed to appear as a "local" development program. Like the proverbial frog in the slowly boiling pot, many Americans fail to notice the rise in government heat.

In fact, control of energy and water are the two most effective tools in the enforcement of the Sustainable Development agenda. Without energy and water, human society stops. Using strict controls on how, or even if, energy and water can be used provides government with the power to dictate every aspect of society.

We must also address the fact that we're soft on criminals caught in crimes and aren't deported. No other country would allow this to continue. 40% of them entered the country legally and overstayed their visas. Yet there's still no reliable method to verify if Visa overstays have left the country. Another incentive that must be addressed is the birthright citizenship program that has resulted in millions of children and parents receiving instant rights and benefits. Some have called them "GPS babies" and this certainly cannot be what the authors of the 14th Amendment intended to occur. Public housing and other benefits are provided for the illegal parents through their 'anchor children' while citizens are turned away because of limited resources. This antiquated program must end. Government agencies and officials at all levels must address the costs associated with this kind of abuse. Past mistakes have been made in attempts to fix illegal immigration and our communities can no longer afford these kinds of mistakes.
In an interview on National Public Radio (NPR), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her new agenda for women will give mothers access to day care so they can "earn without carrying the burden of child care."
During the interview, aired on Weekend Edition Sunday, Pelosi spoke about her newly announced agenda, which is on her website, and is titled, "When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families," a plan that includes universal pre-school and access to day care for working women, and an increase in the minimum wage.
"The child care issue probably has to be done in steps," Pelosi told NPR host Susan Stamberg. "But when children are learning, parents can be learning. And when the children are in preschool, that frees parents to earn without carrying the burden of the child care."
"We are hopeful we can make it too hot for people to handle ignoring these women's issues and get something done even before we get into the electoral season next year," Pelosi said.
Pelosi's agenda makes the claim that "families are generally left on their own for providing child care," which she sees as a problem in the United States.
The agenda website lists solutions to women's problems such as President Barack Obama's Preschool and Early Head Start/Child Care Initiativ, and "adequate" federal funding for child care programs.
In February the Obama Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published astudy that found that students who participate in the Head Start program actually fare worse, in some ways, than students who do not.

Nearly a hundred top Republican donors and Bush administration officials sent a letter to the House GOP on Tuesday urging lawmakers to pass a bill that legalizes illegal immigrants, arguing that the current system is already allowing them to stay and so it makes sense to register them and bring them into the system.
The donors, led by former Bush administration Cabinet officials Carlos Gutierrez and Spencer Abraham, also said that immigrants are potential Republican voters who can be won over - if the party can be seen as welcoming to immigrants.
"Doing nothing is de facto amnesty. We need to take control of whom we let in our country and we need to make sure everybody plays by the same rules," the donors said in their letter.

The Holocaust would have happened regardless, but the death toll would have been lower without Islamic appeasement.

Both sides cultivated patron Muslim countries, spent and lost huge sums of money on them, and then got a knife in the back for it, time and time again.
America made the fanatical House of Saud into its oldest partner in the region. In return the Saudi royal family nationalized American oil companies (for which the US government compensated the companies with taxpayer dollars) and then used that money to fund a global Jihad. 9/11 was only the topper on a poisonous cake that had been baking in the febrile heat of the Saudi desert for a long time, as petrodollars fed fanatical Islamic beliefs that had been growing steadily more arrogant and insane in direct proportion to the amount of wealth flowing in.
Jewish Americans should be deeply offended that U.S. State Department policy banning the listing of "Jerusalem, Israel" as a place of birth on U.S. passports was affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The court last week struck down a 2002 U.S. law mandating passports be designated as such when appropriate and requested by Americans.
The city of Jerusalem is the geographic focal point of the Jewish people, and it is accepted - at least throughout the West - that Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people. Logically, historically and religiously, Jerusalem and Israel are eternally linked. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, it has never been the capital of any Arab country, and it has been State Department policy that a nation can designate its own capital.
Bible-believing Christians should also be outraged by the policy. Why is it OK to offend Jews and Christians, but not Muslims or Arabs? This is rank, arrogant politics.

Pres. Obama & PM Netanyahu Must Condemn Abbas
ZOA Condemns Dictator Abbas Reiterating Statement - No Jews In Future Pal. State
The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has condemned Palestinian Authority (PA) president and dictator Mahmoud Abbas for stating on Monday that no Jew must be allowed to reside within a future Palestinian state. Abbas has made similar statements before, but the ZOA believes that his reiteration of this racist policy on the eve of Israeli/Palestinian negotiations make his statement particularly egregious. The ZOA has called for public condemnation of Abbas by President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at the very least, the suspension of renewed talks until and unless Abbas publicly repudiates and apologizes for this statement.
In a briefing with mostly Egyptian journalists, the PA dictator Abbas said on Monday that, "In a final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli - civilian or soldier - on our lands" (Noah Browning, 'Abbas wants 'not a single Israeli' in future Palestinian state,' Reuters, July 29, 2013).
Abbas' Fatah/PA, including PA figures often mistakenly regarded in the West as moderates, have insisted that a future Palestinian state must be judenrein and all Jews currently living in communities in Judea and Samaria must be uprooted:

Continuing his campaign stump speeches to boost his own sagging poll numbers, President Obama spoke at an Amazon Fulfillment Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, yesterday. During his remarks Obama pitched his latest plan for a "grand bargain" on the economy -- corporate tax cuts, more infrastructure spending and the elimination of federal government spending cuts forced by sequestration.
Let's think about that for a moment. Barack Obama is running around the country giving speeches about helping middle and working class Americans. But as Rep. Paul Ryan noted, Obama is really pitching a "grand bargain for big business."
Obama is proposing to cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 28%. Don't get me wrong -- I think tax cuts are good economic policy. But on January 3rd of this year, Obama signed the fiscal cliff deal that raised the top tax rate on individuals and small businesses owners to 39.6%. That "deal" is expected to take $60 billion a year out of the hides of families and small business owners.
Don't forget that the president recently suspended Obamacare's employer mandate for companies with more than 50 employees, but he is refusing to suspend the individual mandate. So Obama is giving Big Business tax cuts and breaks from Obamacare that small businesses and families can't get.
As for infrastructure spending, there's an argument to be made for more roads and bridges. But this president mocks the Keystone pipeline and wages a war on coal while he sinks your hard-earned tax dollars into green-energy boondoggles like Solyndra.
Now get this: While Obama chose the Amazon facility to highlight the importance of the private sector, he launched into yet another defense of Big Government, bemoaning the sequestration spending cuts as well as the recent downsizing of government workers at all levels. Obama said:
"If those [government] layoffs had not happened, if public sector employees grew like they did in the past two recessions, the unemployment rate would be 6.5 instead of 7.5. Our economy would be much better off, and the deficit would still be going down because we would be getting more tax revenue."
Obamanomics isn't working, and today's GDP figures speak for themselves. The U.S. economy grew at a sluggish pace of 1.7% in the second quarter of 2013, and first quarter growth was revised downward to 1.1%.
More Bad News
The latest headlines about Obamacare must have folks in the White House reaching for the Maalox. As states rush to set up their mandated Obamacare exchanges, there has been a steady stream of headlines warning of massive premium hikes thanks to Obamacare -- 40% increase in Florida, up 72% in Indiana, up 88% in Ohio.
The results were so bad in Georgia that officials there are asking for an emergency delay after discovering that premiums could rise as much as 198% for some plans.
Democrats counter that these higher premiums will be offset by taxpayer-funded subsidies. But many Americans will have to lookout for the Obamacare "subsidy cliff," as one recent study described it.
The taxpayer-subsidized premiums that an individual or a family qualify for are pegged to a specific formula. Earn one dollar more than the allowed amount and you lose 100% of the subsidy. As the study notes, this perverse setup may "incentivize some to earn less." Consider the following example based on details for a family of three from New York's Obamacare exchange:
"The second lowest silver plan ... would cost $12,784 before subsidies. ...if the family earns $78,120 they will only be required to spend $7,421, with the government subsidizing the rest. That's a total savings of $5,363! $78,120 - $7,421 = $70,699 of take-home income after health insurance.
"What happens if the family earns $78,121 dollars? Suddenly they lose the entire amount of the savings and are actually worse off than they were before. $78,121 - $12,784 = $65,337 of take-home income after health insurance. In fact, assuming the family of three wanted to keep the same plan they would need to earn $83,483 just to get back to where they were before."
This example also demonstrates what a massive redistribution of wealth scheme Obamacare really is. In this example, 7% of a New York family's income is subsidized by Obamacare. The left knows that government dependency is its ticket to power, and through Obamacare it is looking to get more and more people hooked on Big Government.
The GOP's Civil War
The Republican Party appears to be the middle of a civil war over immigration reform. The Washington Times reported yesterday that top party donors, former officials and traditional allies in the business community are mounting a full-court press to pressure Republican House members into supporting the Senate's quasi-amnesty bill.
That bill only survived because Republicans were promised a "surge" of new agents to help secure the border. Most Senate Republicans refused to fall for that ruse, but enough did. And it really was a ruse.
According to Politico, Senator John McCain suggested yesterday before a Big Labor forum that the so-called "border surge" amendment would likely be gutted during final negotiations after the House passes its own immigration legislation. McCain said, "We don't need 20,000 additional border patrol agents. ...I voted for it so friends of mine would be comfortable that we are securing the border."
The good news is that Senator Jeff Sessions is still fighting to defeat the Senate's amnesty bill by reframing the entire debate. In Sessions' view, the focus shouldn't be on illegal immigrants, but the impact on hard-working Americans.
In a memo to his Senate GOP colleagues, Sessions wrote that the elite view on immigration reform is "nonsense," adding that Republicans should instead, "speak directly to the real and legitimate concerns of millions of hurting Americans whose wages have declined and whose job prospects have grown only bleaker." I couldn't agree more!

The focus in New York City politics has been, of course, on the Democrats. How could it be otherwise with Anthony Weiner and Eliot Spitzer both attempting comebacks, and Weiner hoping for the comeback of his comeback?
But how about the Republican field? My conservative cousin finds two good GOP candidates for Mayor, and some reason to believe that one of them might win the job. My cousin writes:
My prior posts on the New York City election campaign may have given some Power Line readers a too pessimistic view of my hometown's future. The crew of Democratic politicians who merrily run around town seeking to ignite atavistic tribal passions and boasting of how much of the treasury they can give municipal unions is not by any measure the whole New York story. This town is definitely not a city in decline.
The population now stands at a record 8.4 million up from a nadir of 7.1 million in 1980 in the aftermath of the fiscal crisis. Talented young people from all over the world gravitate to this city.
New York entrepreneurs are creating cutting edge businesses in fields as diverse as high tech and fashion. The real estate market is booming with multi-million dollar homes in neighborhoods where two decades ago people were afraid to walk the streets at night. Far from Manhattan, Asian and Latin American immigrants are bringing vibrancy and family values to moribund sections of Brooklyn and Queens. Even the once written-off Bronx is experiencing a revival.
The two main GOP candidates for Mayor, John Catsimatidis and Joe Lhota, in very different ways reflect the vigor of this metropolis. John Catsimatidis came here from Greece as an infant. Raised in Harlem, his father worked as a busboy. Catsimatidis became a billionaire with a diverse portfolio including supermarkets, real estate and oil refining.
Catsimatidis brings a brash enthusiasm to campaigning and a willingness to unlock his personal fortune to finance the campaign. This is no small thing in New York where the local GOP is lacking both money and organizational strength. He also has a long time record of generous support for many local charities.
Some of his off the cuff suggestions like street fairs in every neighborhood, monorails along main highways, and a World's Fair may prove problematic. They could well be a distraction in a campaign that should focus on the irresponsible fiscal and public safety policies advocated by the Democrats.
Joe Lhota has a long distinguished career in both the private and public sector. He served as Finance Commissioner and Deputy Mayor for Operations in the Giuliani administration. Later, he served as Chairman of the Transit Authority.
As Deputy Mayor, Lhota earned a reputation as a tough and effective administrator. At Transit he was widely praised for getting the system up and running after Hurricane Sandy.
Lhota is not just a career civil servant; he earned his spurs on Wall Street. Unlike Eliot Spitzer he does not want to run the financial services industry out of town.
But Lhota has never run for elective office. He is a wooden, remote figure on the campaign trail.
There's also some baggage from the Giuliani years. Joe was Chairman of the Mayor's Decency Commission, a feckless attempt to stop government funding of museums that displayed offensive art work. The Commission was created at the same time Giuliani was conducting an affair that led to the divorce of his wife Donna Hanover.
Despite the Democrats 5-1 registration advantage in New York, you can't dismiss the chances of a GOP victory. No Democrat has won in 20 years. A bitter primary battle could fracture the party.
A wild card in the race could be the candidacy of former Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion. Should current Democratic front runner Christine Quinn win the nomination, Carrion, who is no pushover, would be the only "minority" in the race. This could result in a split among Democrats creating a path to GOP victory.
For the sake a great city, let's hope for that outcome.
Yesterday, I wrote about the fight between Chris Christie and Rand Paul. It began on the substantive, and vital, issue of domestic anti-terrorism surveillance policy, and quickly became personal.
Now another intra-Party fight, on a completely different vital issue, has broken out and is becoming personal. Ted Cruz is attacking fellow Republican Senators who disagree with his proposal to bring about a shutdown of the government in order, Cruz hopes, to halt Obamacare.
Politico reports that Cruz's chief of staff criticized fellow conservatives like Oklahoma's Tom Coburn for serving in the "surrender caucus." At the same time, Cruz's top political strategist has lumped Mitch McConnell with Barack Obama, and contrasted them with Cruz, Mike Lee, and Rand Paul. And Cruz has said that many Republicans are "scared" to wage this fight.
Cruz's comment simply states a fact. But putting McConnell in the Obama camp seems like a bit much, especially since all Republicans should want McConnell reelected in 2014 if, as is quite likely, he receives the Republican nomination.
Some of Cruz's Republican critics are firing back with blows that strike me as below the belt. A former top Senate Republican aide told Politico that the dispute "is about promoting Ted Cruz's presidential ambitions, and he and his team are making clear that retaining the House or winning back a Senate GOP majority are all secondary to that goal."
Unlike the Christie-Paul debate over surveillance, the clash over how far to go in trying to thwart Obamacare is a tactical one. Those who disagree with Cruz's approach are concerned (or "scared," as Cruz puts it) that Republicans will be blamed for a government shutdown; that this might very well translate into the Democrats gaining control of the House in 2015; and that, as a result, Obama's last two years in office will produce additional legislative outrages.
These concerns are not irrational. Reasonable people can disagree about how seriously one should take them and how they are to be weighed against the potential rewards of the course Cruz proposes. I'm still debating these considerations with myself.
The debate among Republicans about whether to bring on a government shutdown will be vigorous, as it should be. But demonization of one's fellow Republicans is better suited for core ideological debates than for debates about tactics.
Eliana Johnson finds that Lois Lerner appears to have colluded with an attorney in the Federal Election Commission's general counsel's office to influence the record before the FEC's vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization. Readers may recall that Lerner, the former head of the IRS's exempt-organizations division, worked at the FEC from 1986 to 1995, and was known there for aggressive investigation of conservative groups.
Email traffic uncovered by the House Ways and Means Committee indicates that an attorney from the FEC's enforcement division sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group, the American Future Fund, before recommending that the commission prosecute it for violations of campaign-finance law. But the IRS is prohibited from sharing confidential taxpayer information, and the FEC is not exempted under that prohibition.
The matter in question stems from a complaint to the FEC from the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party alleging that the American Future Fund had violated campaign-finance law by engaging in political advocacy without registering as a political-action committee. The American Future Fund responded by telling the commission that it had applied for tax exemption in March of that year and was a "501(c)(4) social-welfare organization that was organized to provide Americans with a conservative and free-market viewpoint and mechanism to communicate and advocate on the issues that most interest and concern them."
At that point, the emails show, the FEC general counsel's office contacted Lerner to investigate the group's tax-exempt status. However, as Eliana explains, the general counsel is prohibited by law from conducting an investigation into an organization before the FEC's six commissioners have voted to do so.
The email traffic also indicates that Lerner responded to the FEC lawyer with substantive information about the group's status. This is reflected in the lawyer's statement to Lerner that "when we spoke last July, you had told us that the American Future Fund had not received an exemption letter from the IRS."
Eliana describes what happened next:
The FEC general counsel's office, in its recommendation on the case, apparently didn't tell the agency's commissioners about how it had obtained the information about the group's tax-exempt status. Recommending that the commissioners prosecute the American Future Fund, the general counsel's office wrote, "According to its response, AFF submitted an application for tax-exempt status to the Internal Revenue Service . . . on March 18, 2008." The footnote to that sentence reads, "The IRS has not yet issued a determination letter regarding AFF's application for exempt status. Based on the information from the response and the IRS website, it is likely that the application is still under review."
In fact, an FEC lawyer knew that the organization had yet to obtain tax-exempt status because Lerner provided the confidential information.
Before the FEC commissioners voted on the general counsel's recommendation, the FEC lawyer again improperly sought information from Lerner. He asked: "Could you please tell me whether the IRS has since issued an exemption letter to the American Future Fund? Also if the IRS has granted American Future Fund's exemption, would it be possible for you to send me the publicly available information and documents related to American Future Fund?" It doesn't seem clear how (or whether) Lerner responded to this request.
Ultimately, the FEC commissioners split on whether to pursue the American Future Fund's case and voted to close the case.
American Future Fund is not be the only group for which the FEC attorney improperly sought information from Lois Lerner. He also inquired about the tax-exempt status of another conservative organization, the American Issues Project.
The House Ways and Committee has asked for all communications between the IRS and the FEC between 2008 and 2012. Thus, we should get a better sense of how pervasive the FEC-IRS collusion against conservative groups is. But the existence of some collusion seems to be established.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas has always produced superior-and often iconoclastic-analytical work, chiefly because of the inspired leadership of its governor, Richard W. Fisher. (Among other things, Fisher has been a vocal skeptic of quantitative easing, and also thinks we should consider breaking up the big banks. This does not make him popular with Obamaworld.)
The latest piece of research worth taking in is the new report entitled "How Bad Was It? The Costs and Consequences of the 2007-09 Financial Crisis," by Fed analysts Tyler Atkinson, David Luttrell, and Harvey Rosenblum. (You can download the PDF from the Dallas Fed's home page.) The report is quite accessible as these economic reports go, and it makes for sober reading.
How bad? Super Bad. The Great Recession may have cost the U.S. as much as $14 trillion in lost output-essentially an entire year's worth of output. The two charts below from the report show how the economy continues to perform poorly.
The Gang of Eight pro-amnesty Senators are trying to con the House of Representatives into passing parts of an anti-American amnesty bill so they can get a Chuck Schumer-dominated conference committee and bamboozle Representatives into going along with their sellout plans. The few pro-amnesty Republican Senators had Marco Rubio as the salesman for the unpopular amnesty bill, and the few pro-amnesty Republicans in the House have Paul Ryan to play the same un-Republican role.

The Air Force has again censored religious freedom, this time against a chaplain serving at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska.
Chaplain Lt. Col. Kenneth Reyes wrote an essay entitled "No Atheists in Foxholes: Chaplains Gave All in World War II." Shortly after his article was posted on his "Chaplain's Corner" page on the base's website, the base commander ordered it removed and squashed the chaplain's constitutional right to religious freedom. This latest incident is yet another example of the anti-religious campaign against Christians by the Air Force over the past two years. Although the military says "all Service members are free to exercise their Constitutional right to practice their religion," the evidence overwhelmingly proves the opposite. See the evidence here.
Here's the catch. These are not isolated incidents. They are a result of the concerted bullying efforts by the group Military Religious Freedom Foundation.Its leader, avowed atheist Michael Weinstein, recently met with Air Force leaders at the Pentagon and urged the military branch to begin a "cleansing" of any public expression of the Christian faith in the military. Based on recent events, it appears Weinstein's demands are being met.
A simple phone call from Weinstein to base commander Col. Brian Duffy is all it took for full and total capitulation. Shamefully, as a military leader, Duffy abandoned one of his own men under his command and waved the white flag without so much as a whimper.
You can do something to help stop these continued attacks by Air Force leaders on Christian chaplains and enlisted personnel.

We have prepared an email letter you can send immediately to Col. Duffy, urging him to support and defend the religious rights of Chaplain Reyes' by reposting his essay.
At the same time, you can send a letter to your members of Congress, asking them to get personally involved in stopping the widespread religious oppression occurring in the military, especially by the Air Force leadership.

Boehner and other House leaders claim they will ignore the Senate-passed unrestricted amnesty when they take up immigration after their scheduled August break. Boehner says he won't force an amnesty vote -- unless a majority of House Republicans supports one.
Yet just yesterday the National Journal ran an article with this headline: "Inside Boehner's Strategy to Slow Walk Immigration to the Finish Line."
The urgent question is -- what will those House Members hear from their voters while they are on recess at home next month?
Boehner is NOT ruling out a "compromise" with the Senate that will result in amnesty. In fact, it seems clear that much of the Republican leadership favors amnesty. Former VP candidate Rep. Paul Ryan is openly predicting that the House will pass an amnesty, as if he expects Boehner to crumple like a cheap suit.
Our danger is extreme.
If the House passes just about any immigration bill that goes to a Senate-House conference committee for compromise this fall, it may emerge as a disastrous bill for America. Can we expect John Boehner to hold firm?
