Dragging us into war
WATCH & SHARE: Both parties are dragging us into war in the Middle East
Only 11% of Americans want us to arm the rebels in Syria yet the Obama administration isn't listening. But it's not just the Democrats, progressives in both parties are pushing for U.S. involvement as evidenced by John McCain's recent trip to Syria where he met with the rebels. Why is this a bad idea? Glenn explains below in a clip you need to share this clip with your friends!
Jen Psaki: Doesn't Know If Cannibalism Is a Violation of International Law
'The Refugees Will Collapse Europe': Beck Outlines How Syria Crisis Could Have World-Changing Implications
The Blaze | Erica Ritz | Jun. 18, 2013 9:00pm
With President Obama's announcement that the United States will begin arming the Syrian rebels, many might think that the bloody civil war might soon come to an end.
But Glenn Beck argued on his television show Tuesday that the suffering is far from over, and that both Europe and the United States may face dire implications.
Beck began by showing current photos from the Middle East, saying progressives on both sides of the aisle who supported the "Arab Spring" are responsible.
"Who killed 98,000 people in [Syria] since the Arab Spring?" he demanded. "Who's responsible? The president of the United States, the Center for American Progress, Samantha Power, Bill Kristol, John McCain, Lindsey Graham, all of the progressives that said let's open up this Jeffersonian can of worms."
Left Loses Big in Citizenship-Verification Supreme Court Case
J. Christian Adams - June 18, 2013
Something perverse happened after the Supreme Court's decision today invalidating citizenship-verification requirements in Arizona for registrants who use the federal voter registration form. The Left knows they lost most of the battle, but are still claiming victory. That's what they do. Election-integrity proponents and the states are saying they lost, but don't realize they really won.
The Left wins even when they lose, and conservatives are often bewildered and outfoxed in the election-process game.
Earlier today, I called the decision a nothingburger. After re-reading the case and reflecting a bit more, it's clear that the decision was a disaster for the Left and their victory cackles are hollow - and they know it.
Was Justice Roberts Intimidated Into Voting for 'ObamaCare'? Senator Mike Lee Presents the Evidence
The Blaze | Erica Ritz | Jun. 18, 2013 2:22pm
After Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts voted to uphold the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as "ObamaCare," many wondered if there could be a yet-unknown reason why the Republican-nominated justice made the unexpected decision.
On the Glenn Beck radio program Tuesday, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) explained why he believes Roberts was intimidated into changing his vote late in the process, as laid out in his new book Why John Roberts Was Wrong About Healthcare.
Sen. Chuck Grassley: IRS to Pay $70 Million in 'Union Bonuses' Despite Directive to Cancel Them
The Blaze | Jonathon M. Seidl | Jun. 19, 2013 7:52am
WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) - The Internal Revenue Service is about to pay $70 million in employee bonuses despite an Obama administration directive to cancel discretionary bonuses because of automatic spending cuts enacted this year, according to a GOP senator.
Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa says his office has learned that the IRS is executing an agreement with the employees' union on Wednesday to pay the bonuses. Grassley says the bonuses should be canceled under an April directive from the White House budget office.
The directive was written by Danny Werfel, a former budget official who has since been appointed acting IRS commissioner.
Has Boehner Agreed to Meet Key Demand of GOP House Members Revolting Over Immigration Push?
The Blaze | Jonathon M. Seidl | Jun. 18, 2013 6:00pm
Speaker of the House John Boehner reportedly has agreed to follow the Hastert rule regarding any immigration bill put forth by the House, a key capitulation in a standoff that has pitted the Speaker against members of his own caucus who are taking a stand against immigration reform they say has ulterior motives.
Still, early reports signal he may have given himself a way out.
The Hastert rule - which is more of a longstanding, unwritten policy - is the idea that no bill can be brought to the floor of the House without support from a majority of the party in power.
The rule was being pushed for by a group of 70 Republicans led by Michele Bachmann (Minn.), Louis Gohmert (Texas), and Steve King (Iowa). As TheBlaze reported exclusively, the coalition said they were compiling signatures last week for a letter to send to Boehner asking him to honor the policy.
This is it!! We have a small window in which to act! The State budget is due on June 30th so the timing is right. Call! Let the representatives in our State government know we are aware. We know what they did back in 2001 and we want them to undo it! We know their pension plans are responsible for PA's $47 billion unfunded liability which is equivalent to $3700 for each Pennsylvanian. We know this pension crisis will cause more cuts to educational programs and more teacher layoffs. Demand they take taxpayers off the hook for their lavish pension packages. Go here to find your representatives - http://tinyurl.com/m4yyd2l
Inform yourself with the attached pamphlet . PA state workers pension program violates Fiscal Responsibility and Constitutionally Limited Government. Our public servant representatives need to fix the problem of untenable state worker pensions. It's not that we resent paying it, it's just that we can't afford it. Action Items 1. Call your representative and Senator and tell them you want to see pension reform that brings our state budget into balance. Talk to two friends or family members and convince them to make the phone calls and get two others to do the same, and so on, and so on.
2. Print the attached pamphlet using duplex (2-sided); check box for "flip on short edge". Give it to as many neighbors as you can the next 2 weeks. If you need some mailed, send me your address.
Keep an eye on your email inbox because we will be planning more activities focused on our goals of pension reform as well as privatization of our liquor stores
Thanks for your efforts Pam, Jim and Tim
How To Use The 2nd Vote App
There is an awesome application for computer and cell phone called 2ND VOTE (2ndvote.org) Want to know what companies support conservative issue and what companies support liberal agendas. It rates the companies and tells you how they finance different issues. Please take a few minutes to watch a short video on this application. Politicians understand only two things 1. Getting power 2. Keeping power. Business too understands just 2 things 1. Getting your money 2. Getting more of your money. Start using the free market system while we still have it. There is ALWAYS an alternative.
PLEASE SHARE WITH EVERYONE you know. Post on FaceBook and Twitter. This software was developed by a concerned conservative from Tennessee.

The movie " Corpus Christi " is due to be released this June to August. A disgusting film set to appear in America later this year depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals! As a play, this has already been in theaters for a while. It's called " Corpus Christi " which means "The Body of Christ". It's revolting mockery of our Lord. But we can make a difference.
That's why I am sending this e-mail to you. If you do send this around, we just might be able to prevent this film from showing in Canada and America . Let's stand for what we believe in and stop the mockery of Jesus Christ our Savior. Where do we stand as Christians? At the risk of a bit of inconvenience, I'm forwarding this to all I think would appreciate it, too. Please help us prevent such offenses against our Lord. There is no petition to sign, no time limit, or minimum number of people to send this to.. It will take you less than 2 minutes!
If you are not interested and do not have the 2 minutes it will take to do this, please don't complain when God does not have time for you because He is far busier than we are. Hey it's worth a shot! Apparently, some regions in Europe have already banned the film. All we need is a lot of prayer and a lot of e-mails.

Patriotic Summer Movie!
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GODS AND GENERALS AND GETTYSBURG COMES THE LIBERTY MOVIE OF THE YEAR
RON MAXWELL'S COPPERHEAD
For anyone who reveres and believes in the preservation of the Constitution of the United States, Copperhead is a must see this summer!
Copperhead is unlike any Civil War movie to date. It is a film of the war at home - of a family ripped apart by war, of a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime. A story of the violent passions and burning feuds that set ablaze the homefront during the Civil War, Copperhead the movie is also a timeless and deeply moving examination of the price of dissent, the place of the individual amidst the hysteria of wartime, and the terrible price of war - a cost measured not in dollars but in fractured families, broken loves, and men dead before their time.
Based on the extraordinary novel by Harold Frederic, who witnessed these conflicts firsthand as a small child, Copperhead tells the story of Abner Beech, a stubborn and righteous farmer of Upstate New York, who defies his neighbors and his government in the bloody and contentious autumn of 1862.

Announcing the 2013 National Conference
& Legislative Briefing!
June 19 - 21 we will convene at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC for our fourth annual National Conference & Legislative Briefing.
And here's some really great news: This year's registration fee is only $229! Register by April 15th and you'll receive our "Early Bird" rate of just $189!
We also offer again this year special benefits for Patriot Eagle and Patriot sponsors.
We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:
Steven Emerson - Journalist, author, and the Executive Editor of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. A. M. Rosenthal, late-managing editor of The New York Times, described Emerson as "one of the nation's best national security correspondents."
John Guandolo - Former FBI agent and one of America's leading authorities on the Muslim Brotherhood and its inner workings in America. Guandolo spoke at our conference in 2011 and received rave reviews from conference attendees!
Ezra Levant - Canadian lawyer, author, newspaper columnist with Sun Media, and former publisher of the Western Standard. Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!
The National Conference & Legislative Briefing will begin on Wed. evening, June 19th, and conclude on Friday, June 21st at noon, with additional optional training sessions Friday afternoon.
It will again feature our very popular Capitol Hill Awards Luncheon and our signature gala banquet-and of course, our Legislative Briefing, where Members of Congress will brief you on various issues and answer your questions.
So make your plans now to join us in our nation's capital for what promises to be our best National Conference & Legislative Briefing ever!
More details to come!
TO MY POLITICAL FRIENDS: Please mark your calendars for Monday, July 15...there is going to be a upcoming rally in Washington DC at Freedom Plaza at 9:30 AM. From what I understand this rally is organizing AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and IN FAVOR OF JOBS FOR AMERICANS!! You can get more info about it at: http://dcmarchforjobs.com/ is the link site. A number of organizations are sponsoring it and organizing for it including: the Black American Leadership Alliance and the New Jersey Citizens For Immigration Control. If you are not available that day to attend the rally, you can still donate money towards helping to offset the costs of the buses to get to DC. From what I understand buses will be headed to DC for this rally coming from all over the United States!!. So if you support jobs for Americans then please join the rally.
Dear RedStater,
We are excited to announce that Governor Nikki Haley will be attending this year's RedState Gathering!
We'll be in New Orleans August 2nd and 3rd with an all-star line-up to celebrate our Fifth Annual event. Nikki Haley hosted us two years ago in South Carolina where she hosted a great welcome reception and gave a fantastic speech that really got the crowd fired up on Saturday morning. We are thrilled to welcome her back to the RedState Gathering in New Orleans.
Confirmed speakers include:
Ted Cruz
Ken Cuccinelli
Nikki Haley
Bobby Jindal
Jim Bridenstine
Speaker invitations have also been extended to:
-
Gov. Rick Perry (TX)
-
Sen. Marco Rubio (FL)
-
Liz Cheney
-
Rep. Mick Mulvaney (SC)
-
Sen. Tim Scott (SC)
-
Rep. Steve Scalise (LA)
-
And more!
We'll have plenty more speaker announcements coming shortly, but we're guaranteed to have a good mix of elected officials, potential 2014 cycle candidates, and other RedState friends. Remember, the Gathering is unique in conservative events in that speakers pay their own way and are required to take questions from folks in the audience.
What better excuse for a trip to New Orleans? And, don't forget, your registration even includes most of your food, as well as access to deeply discounted hotel rooms.
As some of you may know, I am associated with Coventry Christian Schools as a parent of a graduate (2010) and as member of the Board of Trustees. Last October we spent a wonderful evening honoring Mark Niehls at our revitalized Founder's Dinner and celebrated our shared heritage in the remarkable community that is Coventry Christian Schools. Our vision for future Founder's Dinners is to inspire and inform not only our alumni and current CCS families but to inspire and inform the Tri-County Area and even our region by hosting speakers and artists who can uniquely assist us in celebrating the heritage, core values, and mission of CCS while also lifting our vision for an even greater future built upon the foundation of our past. The caliber of our speakers and guest artists should provide us with wonderful opportunities to share our CCS story with new partners in Christian education. Proceeds from the dinner will be applied to our annual Coventry Kids Fund for CCS scholarships.
This year we are proud to announce that our distinguished guest and speaker is Dr. Benjamin Carson, and our dinner's theme is "Faith of Our Fathers: The Role of Faith in American Schools." Please join us as we welcome Dr. Carson to the Tri-County Area and celebrate the great things God is doing at CCS!
Dr. Carson is a highly regarded neurosurgeon and motivational speaker who has addressed various audiences across the country. He is one of the most honored and recognized physicians in the world and holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees along with hundreds of awards and citations. He is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He is the author of five books and is the founder of the Carson Scholars Fund. The 2009 award-winning movie entitled Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Carson, premiered on TNT and is based on his memoir. Dr. Carson is an authentic disciple of Christ, has been married to his wife Candy for more than 37 years, and is the father of three sons.
The 2013 Founder's Dinner, which will once again be a part of our Homecoming festivities, will be held at the historic Sunnybrook Ballroom in Pottstown on Sunday, October 13th, 2013. Doors will open at 4:30pm, followed by dinner at 5:15. Dress will be business/professional. Tickets will be priced at $100 until May 15th, then will be $125, so reserve your tickets for the reduced price.
Due to Dr. Carson's international reputation and recent prominence in the media, including his recent speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, we fully anticipate that this event will sell out quickly once advertised to the public. Tickets go on sale to the public April 15. If you are interested in attending, tickets can be purchased online. I will send the link out to those who wish to go on April 15
th
. While online reservations are preferred because they facilitate efficient event planning, you may also complete a paper order form, which I can forward to you as well.
All of us at Coventry Christian Schools, look forward to sharing this very special evening with you and acquainting you with the school and its mission!
Blessings,
Christine Gordon

WHAT IS COMMON CORE?
Common Core, or the Common Core State Standards Initative (CCSSI), as it is known at the State and Federal level, is a set of national education standards that will fulfill the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, through a waiver system. (The NCLB Act was put into place by Congress in 2001 and signed into law by President George W. Bush). Many states were failing to meet the NCLB Act requirements and, therefore, wanted something to replace NCLB.Common Core is part of the UN's plan for complete federal control over our education systems and the "Dumbing-down" of America.
COMMON CORE IS A TROJAN HORSE AND TIED TO THE UNITED NATIONS (UN)
If you cannot see that Common Core is tied to the United Nations you have not done your homework! The major funder of the Common Core Movement is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which has pledged $60 million dollars to this effort. Bill and Melinda Gates are tied to UN through-and-through and have spent money in America and overseas for UN programs in Africa and all over the world for decades.
From the Conservative Teachers of American organization, they wrote an article entitled: "Common Core Standards and the Federalization of Education." In this article we read: "Many are concerned that the Common Core Standards, once successfully implemented, will provide unfettered access of our educational system by the United Nations. Some textbooks and curricula for our public schools have already been written by the [United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization] UNESCO and the International Baccalaureate program, that is currently in many school districts, across the United States. Grabbing additional access is a natural next step. Once they write the curricula, they must have authority to develop all testing tools."
The UN involvement in the American educational system has already been facilitated by treaties signed by American presidents from both parties. Those documents include but are not limited to: Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Treaty on the Rights of the Child, Civic Education: Classroom Connections, and Agenda 21.
The US Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development (since 2003), is the nexus of the UNA-USA and Global Leadership Coalition at the Department of Education, which altogether leverages the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014. UNESCO, the lead agency of the Decade, defines Education for Sustainable Development as "education for everyone everywhere" for the "lifelong learning" of "present and future generations".
The UNA-USA sponsors Model UN across America and tailors its Global Classrooms curricula to whichever setting the kids happen to be participating. Children are unknowingly trained to respond with prescribed consensus to the situations, simulations and stimulation's of the particular activity (Delphi Technique). Global Kids is the CFR arm of Connect All Schools Consortium, a new Department of Education network, led by Independent Sector and The White House via United Planet Partners. Global Kids is preparing children for Agenda 21.
The White House, NSA and CIA now have website divisions aimed at kids. The Public Education Network is a national association funded by Independent Sector donors: plus Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Department of Education
From the Partnership for 21st Century Skills aligning the Common Core State Standards with "professional development" content for teachers and principals and Lego Robotics curricula for students (Carnegie Mellon/Lego Education); to software curricula through websites like: cyberschoolbus.un.org, icivics.org, atomiclearning.com, renlearn.org, brainpop.com and ttl4.sunburst.com; to the weekly deliveries of Time for Kids magazine and textbook curricula into classrooms; kids are programmed with UN-defined values. State Governors administer Federal funds to "Community-Oriented Policing" systems like Crime Stoppers (The UN, FBI and other law enforcement and corporate partners administer Crime Stoppers International), the local student-equivalent of the Department of Homeland Security's' "See Something, Say Something" campaign; whereby children see hand-drawn posters of child characters on school walls displaying "Eyes Looking", "Ears Listening", "Mouth Reporting" with a hotline to call. Presidents Bush and Obama have personally followed the George H. W. Bush/Clinton trail of the Agenda 21/ Sustainable America megabanks-maze in "bipartisan" fashion.
UNESCOPLEDGESSUPPORT OF COMMON CORE
From UNESCO's document "The Vision of Education Reform in the United States" it states: "My department has been pleased to partner with the US Agency for International Development to help ensure that our best domestic practices are shared world-wide. The United States provides over a billion dollars annually to partner countries working on educational reform. Our goal for the coming year will be to work closely with global partners, including UNESCO, to promote qualitative improvements and system strengthening....Ultimately, education is the great equalizer. It is the one force that can consistently overcome differences in background, culture, and privilege."
Principle #25- "Children and Youth in Sustainable Development." In the "Activites 25.9.d" it states: "Ensure access for all youth to all types of education, wherever appropriate, providing alternative learning structures, ensure that education reflects the economic and social needs of youth and incorporates the concepts of environmental training, implementing innovative methods aimed at increasing practical skills, such as environmental scouting."
Principle #36- "Promoting Education, Public Awareness and Training." In the Activities Section of this document in "36.5.g" we read: "Within two years the United Nations system should undertake a comprehensive review of its educational programmes, encompassing training and public awareness, to reassess priorites and reallocae resources. The UNESCO/UNEP International Environmental Education Programme should, in cooperation with the appropriate bodies of the United Nations system, Governments, non-governmental organizations and others, establish a porgramme within two years to integrate the decisions of the Conference into the existing United Nations framework adapted to the need of the educators at different levels and circumstances. Regional organizations and national authorities should be encouraged to elaborate similar parallel programmes and opportunies by conducting an analysis of how to mobilize different sectors of the population in order to assess and address their environmental and development education needs."
In the Activities Section of this document in "36.5 h" we read: "There is a need to strengthen, within five years, information exchange by enhancing technologies and capacities necessary to promote environment and development education and public awareness. Countries should cooperate with each other and with the various social sectors and population groups to prepare educational tools that include regional environment and development issues and initiatives, using learning materials and resources suited to their own requirements." Sounds just like PARCC and SLDS. ASU's Institute for Global Sustainability and their "Sustainable Cities Network" is doing a fine job "brain-washing" our students in our high schools on sustainability, global warming (aka climate change), etc. Go here to meet the ASU sustainability schools!
COMMON CORE SCIENCE STANDARDS TEACH GLOBAL WARMING!
Reality Check.....COMMON CORE EDUCATION = COMMUNISM IN AMERICA!
Common Core Education is the INDOCTRINATION of our CHILDREN.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE GOP ESTABLISHMENT RHETORIC FROM MIKE HUCKABEE!!!
Reality Check- just in case you ever had a doubt......MIke Huckabee is a typical GOP Establishment person.
Mike Huckabee is now championing Common Core Education on Fox News for the GOP! How disgusting is that?!?!? "Mike Huckabee Urges Conservatives to Back Common Core Standards"
This is another reason why Constitutional Conservatives MUST leave the GOP and beware of what you hear on Fox News. Fox News continues to move to the left - to the liberal progressive side of issues. That is the very very sad but true fact. Mr. GOP Huckabee....."It's disturbing to me there have been criticisms of these standards directed by other conservatives including the RNC," Huckabee wrote. "The truth of the matter is, these criticisms are short-sighted." see attached article from Sunshine News. Send a message to Mr. GOP Huckabee at http://www.mikehuckabee.com/masterfeedback and send a loud message to the every more liberal progressive Fox News! Americans that believe in our Constitution must not be silent about this!
Do NOT let Fox News get away with promoting the very liberal progressive Common Core Education that promotes the ideology that American Children are Common/Community Property!
Do NOT let Fox News get away with promoting the loss of state's rights and the federal government taking over Education. WE NEED TO ABOLISH THE FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - NOT EMPOWER IT!
If you support SOCIALISM AND COMMUNISM FOR THE U.S.A. then COMMON CORE EDUCATION IS FOR YOU. If you believe in the U.S.A. CONSTITUTION....then YOU WILL LOUDLY AND OPENLY REJECT AND OPPOSE COMMON CORE EDUCATION AND ANYONE THAT PROMOTES IT!!
Common Core Education is the indoctrination of American Children. This is NOT acceptable if you still believe in FREEDOM!!
The proponents of Common Core say that the standards ARE state led because they were developed by The National Governors' Association.
Well, perhaps this is true in a way that is very disturbing! Listen to this speech at the 1989 NGA conference on education (at 12:48).
The Development of Common Core, Explained by Michael Chapman
The video says this is a clip from the 1989 National Governors'Assoc conference on Education:
Sr. Director of Mid-Continental Regional Education Laboratory, Dr. Shirley McCune
She says about education:
#1) Total transformation of our society
#2) Teaching of facts and information (knowledge) is no longer the primary purpose of education
#3) Close connection between economic (sustainable) development and human capitol (human resource labor for a planned economy)
A group that allowed this kind of rhetoric to be said at their meeting? I don't think I want them developingeducational standards! Please read to the bottom for transcripts from the 1987 NGA meetings chaired by Bill Clinton. These transcripts are eye-opening. They are clearly more concerned with workers for the manufacturing. They seem to have concerns that we have students who can't read well enough (non-English speaking especially) to function in the manufacturing plants, and then on the other end of the spectrum... too many with higher ed degrees who don't WANT to work in the manufacturing. So... what to do about all this? Hummm.... standards! Make sure they read well enough to function as the industrial workers, but not so well that they don't want to!!! This is the John D. Rockefeller goal of the early 20th century when he started pushing for compulsory government schooling and funding the building of government schools.
NOW.... review the transcripts below of the conferences chaired by Bill Clinton: National Governor's Association website (find all annual meetings here with transcriptsm- ) 1986-87 NGA Chair Gov. Bill Clinton's Initiative
Making America Work: Productive People, Productive Policies
1987 Annual meeting.See page 34of this document to see how those governors seem to be concerned that we aren't training our students for the "workforce." They are concerned that the professors of higher ed are telling students to strive for more than the job of working in the manufacturing plants. On page 40 they start talking about standards needed in education. " See page 42 with this statement by Governor Sinner (great name!) to Lee Iacoccoa: "But you also made a point about the terrific cost to industry of the disparity between states in these regulations and I wondered, with all the fuss and the furor that we make over states' rights...." http://www.nga.org/files/live/sites/NGA/files/pdf/1987NGAAnnualMeeting.pdf
June 11, 2013: Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) leads the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee in a markup of the Strengthening America's Schools Act of 2013, an education initiative to replace No Child Left Behind. http://www.c-spanvideo.org/event/220036
At the June 10 Common Core forum in Fayette County, Superintendent Barge stated over and over again that if Georgia wants to change these standards at any time, we have the ability to do so.The testimony below contradicts this belief by Superintendent Barge and confirms that states who adopted the Common Core standards DO NOT have the ability to change the standards in any way on their own.
2:23:00 - Rep. Tim Scott discusses his amendment to Harkin's bill. Instead of states being forced to adopt blanket standards like Common Core as a prerequisite for funding, let's put decision-making back in the hands of parents and teachers in our communities."
2:31:00 - It is admitted that states who want to change the CC standards, the Secretary of Education would have to approve it. States DO NOT have the ultimate decision making abilities!
2:39:00 - Alexander reads page 89 of the bill stating that any changes to standards MUST go through the Secretary of Education for approval. As are most of the amendments offered by Republicans to this education bill, the Scott Amendment is defeated 12-10.
DATA COLLECTING: Senator Burr at the 1:00:00 mark reveals information about ADDITIONAL data points that this legislation will add to the data mining. He says that his count is now 500 data points.
TEACHER EVALUATIONS: Senator Alexander at 2:00:00 mark discusses his amendment to end federally mandated school and teacher evaluations. He says states had a "gun to their head" to adopt the teacher evaluations because they were desperate for NCLB waivers. He makes the charge that the Harkin bill creates a "NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD." The Gates Foundation involvement is mentioned frequently.
Harkin says over and over "this is voluntary." If states don't want to implement the programs in the bill we just don't accept the money!" More strong evidence that our states need to "just say no" to all federal education dollars. As is pointed out in this debate: Any private business that entered into a partnership where the partner who contributed 10% funding got 80-90% of the control (as is the case with education funding under NCLB and Common Core) the partnership is DOOMED TO FAIL!

Donna Holt from Campaign for Liberty has also written extensively on this issue and her research provided valuable information both to James Simpson and Right Side News, and most importantly, the citizens of Virginia to get them involved at the local level.
Sustainable Development is code for a policy designed to transform human society, essentially eliminating individual life decisions and replacing them with top - down, one-size-fits-all government control. In steady fashion, the agenda for this new policy, designed at the international level, is put into place piece by piece with a new government council here, and new regulation there, each designed to appear as a "local" development program. Like the proverbial frog in the slowly boiling pot, many Americans fail to notice the rise in government heat.
The main course of action to impose the new agenda is through the pretense of environmental protection; "Sorry about your rights, but if we don't save the planet, then we will all perish!" And so with the devastation of a thousand pin pricks, America and its form or government is being changed through the creation of non-elected boards, councils and regional governments, designed to enforce the new regulations and "assure that we protect the environment."
The pin pricks come disguised as such issues as controls on community development; controls on use of private property; controls on use of open space; creation of development areas, many times under the excuse of historic preservation; communities designed on the blue print of pack and stack housing; making it harder to drive as roads are narrowed, even forcing cars to share the road with bicycles; the enforcement of expensive mass transit boondoggle projects; and the never ending spending spree on inefficient, unworkable alternative energy, such as wind and solar power.
In fact, control of energy and water are the two most effective tools in the enforcement of the Sustainable Development agenda. Without energy and water, human society stops. Using strict controls on how, or even if, energy and water can be used provides government with the power to dictate every aspect of society.

Looming Federal health insurance mandates under Obamacare will force many Christian employers here in Pennsylvania to violate their conscience. If they refuse, the fine will be $100 per day per employee. Our Independence Law Center is helping one such employer from Lancaster County fight back in court. It's in the appeals court now, and we're praying for a win. But if not, this employer will either be forced to violate his deeply-held Christian convictions, or face massive fines every day. Does this sound like America to you?
We need folks like you to get involved - and that's why I'm inviting you to a critically important "Conscience Forum" sponsored by Congressman Joe Pitts in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia - the very city where our First Amendment rights were established in law.

RedState Morning Briefing
For June 19, 2013
Friends,
I felt the need to bring you up to speed on a post from this morning's Morning Briefing.I have now confirmed that Georgia Right to Life is opposing the the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 1797).This is the most significant piece of pro-life legislation Congress has considered since the partial birth abortion ban.
Georgia Right to Life is opposed because there is a rape/incest exception. In other words, they want it all or nothing. They would rather continue late term abortions all together than ensure some of them are stopped because they want a complete ban or no ban.Never mind that, in the present political climate, a complete ban is impossible.
It is horrifying that a pro-life group would oppose pro-life legislation that would stop the killing of many, many children.I have a full update here, including what a member of the Georgia General Assembly told me happened to Georgia legislators as they were considering pro-life legislation.
Repealing Obamacare will increase the deficit by $109 billion over 10 years.
That was a headline from a CBO report in May when Republicans voted on full repeal of Obamacare.Somehow, when it comes to ascertaining the costs of wrongheaded policy, CBO wants us to engage in willing suspension of disbelief. The most costly entitlement will actually reduce the deficit, they claim. In Washington, up is down and down is up.
We are now seeing the same thing with the amnesty/immigration deform bill. You need not be an actuary to understand that 11 million poor illegals and tens of millions of other poor legal immigrants and guest workers, along with their American-born children, will wind up receiving a lot more in benefits that they pay in taxes.Yet, CBO will have you believe that this bill will actually reduce the deficit over 10 and 20 years by $197 billion and $700 billion respectively. In fact, the only main costs in this bill are the border security provisions.. . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2.Oppose A Feel-Good Intervention In Syria
It is a funny thing about American foreign policy. The Democrats are the peacenik party until they have an opportunity to send American soldiers off to die for no reason other than to make them feel good about their higher morality. This scenario is playing out again in Washington as the Democrat foreign policy elites begin beating the drums for a US intervention in Syria. We can expect the call to get stronger with the move of Samantha Power, an ardent believer in the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine who once advocated sending in US military forces to protect the Palestinians from Israel, to the position of National Security Advisor.
The situation in Syria would present a huge challenge to even a competent Administration. Needless to say, the Obama Administration, which now dredging up the talent equivalent of a tee-ball team to fill positions in what promises to be a disastrous second term, is out of its depth. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
3.Open Borders Politicians Responsible for More Illegal Immigration
The real issue with the immigration debate is not a question of what to do with those illegals already here; it is a question of what to do with the next wave.,.and the next wave....and the next wave.
While everyone is focused on the past - what to do with those already here - and the future - whether the promises of more enforcement will ever materialize - nobody is focusing on the present. In anticipation of a mass amnesty and perennial suspension of deportations, migrants from Central America are rushing to cross our borders.Yes, these people all follow social media. Here is a key finding from the New York Times . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
4.The beauty queen view of modern America
Who knew that a beauty pageant could be brimming with so much socio-political insight? The Miss USA pageant on Sunday gave us not one, but two, remarkable observations on the state of the Union.
First, here's Miss Alabama, Mary Margaret McCord, offering her thoughts on the surveillance state: "I think the society that we live in today, it's sad that if we go to the movies, or to the airport, or even to the mall that we have to worry about our safety... so I would rather someone track my telephone messages, and feel safe wherever I go, than feel like they're encroaching on my privacy." . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

6.A Note on Bridging the Gap Between Conservative Theory and Practice
"I blame conservatives-ourselves-myself. Our failure, as one Conservative writer has put it, is the failure of the Conservative demonstration. Though we Conservatives are deeply persuaded that our society is ailing, and know that Conservatism holds the key to national salvation-and feel sure the country agrees with us-we seem unable to demonstrate the practical relevance of Conservative principles to the needs of the day. We sit by impotently while Congress seeks to improvise solutions to problems that are not the real problems facing the country, while the government attempts to assuage imagined concerns and ignores the real concerns and real needs of the people." . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Each day has provided us with yet one more glimpse into the seedy world of a government that has clearly lost its way, and shed even the appearance of concern for maintaining the public trust.
Although many Americans received the first forms of government assistance during the Great Depression, they didn't become addicted to government and they were expected to work for their money.

Two years ago available public evidence suggested a likelihood of Huma Abedin - now Huma Weiner - and Hillary Clinton having, shall we say, "an unusually close relationship."
This evidence began to surface in mid-2007 when rumors about the Huma/Hillary relationship being more than the "close colleague" kind floated around the halls of Washington. A logical question took shape, "If Hillary is bisexual (as) had long been thought (and occasionally uttered in public), what is the nature of her relationship with the dark eyed enchanting Abedin, a young lady from a strict Muslim family?"
Although they were never asked publicly, the initial question led to a few less salacious and more concrete questions about Huma.

Public Strongly Opposes Obama's Syrian Intervention
Last week the White House announced that it would begin providing weapons and military aid to the Syrian rebels fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The conundrum for U.S. policy makers is that many of the rebels are Al Qaeda extremists.
This "nuance," and the failure of the Arab Spring to bring real freedom to the Middle East, have not been lost on the American people. A new poll finds that 70% of the public opposes Obama's policy of arming the Syrian rebels. Only 20% support the idea. That is an incredible 50-point gap.
The opposition to Obama's policy is bi-partisan: 74% of independents oppose it, as do 71% of Republicans and 66% of Democrats. Even worse for the president is that opinions are hardening against U.S. intervention. In March 2012, 63% opposed arming the rebels and 29% supported doing so -- a 34-point gap.
Good people can disagree on the best approach to this problem, and there are good people who support toppling Assad. In the Pew poll, a majority of Americans (53%) agreed with the view that it was "important for the U.S. to support people who oppose authoritarian regimes."
But given the results of Obama's foreign policy choices in places like Egypt and Libya, a growing majority clearly does not feel this administration is capable of intervening in Syria and securing an outcome that will serve U.S. interests or freedom in the Middle East.
Last week Sarah Palin told an audience of conservative activists that if we see Al Qaeda-backed jihadists fighting Iranian-backed jihadists perhaps the best policy is to "let Allah sort it out."
Big Government And The Crisis Of Confidence
Jeffrey Lord has a column today at The American Spectator connecting the public's distrust of Big Government to the current debate over the Senate's quasi-amnesty bill. He recounts the IRS scandal involving illegal immigrants claiming tax credits for children who do not exist.
The IRS and leading politicians have known about the problem for years. Last year, Harry Reid killed legislation to stop it, even though this rampant fraud is costing taxpayers more than $4 billion a year.
Lord writes that this example of "massive IRS fraud by illegal immigrants vividly illustrates is yet another story of corruption and government gone wild." Here's more of his column:
"It is the same story as the IRS-Tea Party scandal. It is the same story as the NSA-Edward Snowden issue. It is the same story as Benghazi. It is the same story as State Department cover-ups of tales of State Department employees involvement with prostitutes, sexual assaults, and illegal drugs.
"Time and time and time again this always comes back to the incompetence and/or corruption of a government that is seen as being run by arrogant mandarins of the ruling class elite.
Lord then suggests that those pushing this so-called "immigration reform" bill are ignoring the reality of corruption:
"This time their solutions to an out-of-control illegal immigration problem -- which relies 100% on a Big Government that has failed over and over and over again and can't even manage to control the border -- are going to work. Really. Honest. In truth? This is nonsense on stilts."
I couldn't agree more.
Speaking of fraud and waste in Big Government, check out the latest video by James O'Keefe. He helped to bring down ACORN, and now he's exposing the fraud in the "Obamaphone" program, which is paid for by fees tacked on to the bills of regular cellphone users.
Boehner Speaks On Border Security
There is growing angst among conservatives around the country about how Speaker John Boehner will handle immigration reform legislation once the Democrat-dominated Senate passes its amnesty bill. Politico reports that Speaker Boehner made the following statement to a closed-door meeting of the House GOP caucus this morning:
"I have no intention of putting a bill on the floor that will violate the principles of our majority and divide our conference. One of our principles is border security. I have no intention of putting a bill on the floor that the people in this room do not believe secures our borders. It's not gonna happen."
Obama's Abortion Extremism
One of the more memorable moments of the 2008 presidential campaign occurred during a debate at Pastor Rick Warren's Saddleback Church. Pastor Warren asked then-Senator Obama, "At what point does a baby get human rights?" Obama responded that the question was "above my pay grade."
In the wake of the Kermit Gosnell trial, many Americans were exposed for the first time to the gruesome realities of the culture of death wrought by Roe v. Wade. Thankfully pro-life members of Congress are fighting to restore respect for the sanctity of life.
Today the House of Representatives is expected to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The bill would ban late-term abortions performed after the 20th week of pregnancy based on medical evidence that unborn children may feel pain starting at 20 weeks.
Kermit Gosnell specialized in late-term abortions. Some babies were born alive in his office, but not even they were spared. He finished the job by "snipping" their spinal cords.
Regrettably, President Obama seems unmoved. The White House issued a statement vowing to veto the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act should it reach his desk.
In the statement, the White House predictably resurrected the "war on women" theme, blasting the bill as "an assault on a woman's right to choose" and "a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade" that "shows contempt for women's health ... and the Constitution." Nothing could be further from the truth.
But if the White House wants a serious debate about women's health, it should examine the link between abortion and violence against women. I have a column in USA Today, co-authored by Daniel Allott, exploring this very subject.
Yes, Media Bias Is Real
As the country debates same-sex "marriage," the left-wing media and the popular culture have been eager cheerleaders for the radical notion of men "marrying" other men.
The Pew Research Center studied more than 500 media reports about the issue during the time when two prominent cases were before the Supreme Court. Pew concluded: "Stories with more statements supporting same-sex marriage outweighed those with more statements opposing it by a margin of roughly 5-to-1."
Many Americans have come to falsely assume that nearly a quarter of the population is gay partly because of this type of grossly distorted reporting. The real figure is significantly lower.
On Wednesday, at two rallies bracketing the Capitol, Tea Party and conservative activists will again take center-stage on two issues dominating the national political dialogue. Reps. Steve King, Michele Bachmann and other members of the Tea Party Caucus will host a nearly day-long dialogue and discussion on immigration reform. On the other side of the Capitol, Tea Party grass roots organizations will hold a rally to "Audit the IRS," in response to the agency's efforts to intimidate conservative organizations.
The immigration event hosted by Rep. King begins at 9am on the East side of the Capitol. The morning event will run until Noon and feature several members of Congress and national conservative leaders. Glenn Beck, who was an early supporter of the Tea Party movement will speak at the event.
You want to know what's wrong with our counterterrorism approach as it relates to radical Islam?
Look no further than the exchange between U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, a courageous congressman who truly "gets it," and FBI Director Robert Mueller.
See the video below.
While the National Security Agency (NSA) has been busy collecting phone records of hundreds of millions of Americans, our FBI ignored evidence provided by the Russians that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was talking about jihad.
Had the FBI not ignored the jihad warnings, the Boston Marathon bombing might well have been prevented.
Obviously, the NSA phone collection program didn't prevent it.
In an open society it's not possible to prevent every terrorist attack. And there are good arguments for and against what the NSA does (and truth be told, who is sure how far their data collection goes?). Given the IRS targeting of certain kinds of organizations, one of our concerns is that the data will be misused.
But the more our government counterterrorism approach practices "Jihad Denial Syndrome," the more likely it will be that jihadists like Tamerlan Tsarnaev will slip through our defenses.
And no amount of phone data collection will make up for that politically correct failure.

Whistleblower: IRS Possibly Employed Data To Harass Opponents
Jun 18, 2013 10:58 am The IRS may have utilized surveillance data collected by the National Security Agency to harass political opponents of the Obama administration, including the tea party, charged NSA whistleblower William Binney in a radio interview. After working in the intelligence community for more than 30 years, Binney retired from the NSA in 2001. He co-founded a [...]
The White House announcement of covert military aid to Syrian rebels marks a major shift in the U.S.-led war on terrorism as the United States for the first time will be backing a coalition of groups that includes al Qaeda-affiliated rebels, according to U.S. intelligence officials and experts.

While T.I. may be the "Southern Jay-Z," the rapper from Atlanta who's been most successful copying Hov's playbook is Ludacris. Like Shawn Carter, Chris Bridges used a successful rap career to spring into movies and liquor endorsements.
The whole point of my concern, before I was president -- because some people say, "Well, you know, Obama was this raving liberal before. Now he's, you know, Dick Cheney." Dick Cheney sometimes says, "Yeah, you know? He took it all lock, stock, and barrel." My concern has always been not that we shouldn't do intelligence gathering to prevent terrorism, but rather are we setting up a system of checks and balances? So, on this telephone program, you've got a federal court with independent federal judges overseeing the entire program.
Oh, Mr. President, you're so, so, so certain that nobody is going to notice your verbal sleight-of-hand.
Remember, in a FISA court, there is no equivalent of a defense attorney speaking on behalf of the person being investigated. It is not an adversarial court. Nobody speaks for you, Joe Citizen. The government makes its case, and the judge either says, "okay," or "no, I'm not convinced." Take a guess at how that works out . . .
The court rarely, if ever, denies the government's requests, according to annual reports issued to senior members of Congress by the Department of Justice and collected by the Federation of American Scientists.
In 2012, the government made 1,789 applications to the court -- one was withdrawn by the government and 40 were modified by the court, but "the FISC did not deny any applications in whole or in part," the report states. In 2011, there were 1,676 applications, of which two were withdrawn and 30 modified, but once again, "The FISC did not deny any applications in whole, or in part." In 2010, there were 1,511 applications, of which five were withdrawn and 14 modified, but "The FISC did not deny any applications in whole, or in part."
In 2009, the court denied a single application, modified 14, and approved another 1,320. In 2008, the court denied another application, and made "substantive modifications" to two more, but approved more than 2,000. In 2007, the court denied a whopping three applications. It denied a single one in 2006. It denied zero applications in 2005 and 2004, though it denied four in 2003. It approved all applications in 2002 and 2001.
So, since the start of the War on Terror more than 11 years ago, the court has denied just 10 applications, and modified several dozen, while approving more than 15,000.
Obama to Charlie Rose: "First of all, Charlie, the number of requests are surprisingly small."
Mary Katharine Ham, writing at WarmerThanWarmAir.com, writes:
Obama's just repeating speeches from 2008, paired with demonstrable proof that he's not interested in acting out the beliefs in those speeches, and expecting us all to move on, satisfied that his guiding hand will prevent abuse. His assurances have held great power in the past, but exactly what would make us think they're worth anything now? Sure, it's politically advantageous for him to declare on Benghazi, NSA, IRS (not to mention ERA and State Department), "We have noted your concerns and there's an investigation underway, now let's get back to exactly what I'd like to talk about, and don't I give an awesome speech?"
But that's not good enough. Obama has allowed abuses to happen on his watch, his administration has floated somewhere between malice and utter incompetence letting them go on, and none of the institutional backstops or failsafes have worked to prevent them or punish those responsible.
Tonight on The O'Reilly Factor Sharyl Attkisson told Bill that she knows who hacked into her home computers.
"I think I know. But I'm just not prepared to go into that. We're continuing our investigations. There are multifaceted looks at what to do next. . . . . Let me just say, whoever did it, to come into a private citizen's home, whether I'm a journalist or not, and look in my family's computer and look into my work computer. . . . Well, it's outrageous."
Watching Turkey Burn, the State Department Boldly . . . Makes a Statement Urging Calm
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki finally had to say something about the increasingly brutal crackdown against protesters in Turkey.
"Look, we are focused on calling for calm, on calling for restraint. We remain a close ally of Turkey," she stressed. "Of course, I've outlined and spoken, in a number of those occasions when you and others have asked, about the concerns we have had. And we haven't held back in that regard in any way."
She said the U.S. remained focused on calling on all parties to ease tensions and to resolve the Gezi Park issue through dialogue, taking into account views from across the political spectrum. "We also continue to urge all sides to exercise restraint and avoid violence," she said.
Psaki also cited reports over the weekend about the prosecution of medical professionals who were said to have been treating people injured during protests, adding that "all of these reports are greatly concerning and we're very focused on monitoring it closely . . . . We, of course, deplore the use of excessive force in any of these cases."
She reiterated that U.S. officials were in close contact with their Turkish counterparts at the highest levels. "We're hopeful that this can be resolved with calm and by an encouragement of restraint in Turkey," Psaki said.
"Hey, you guys! Exercise restraint!"
"You too, down on the ground over there! Restrain yourself!"
These are the comments from the U.S. State Department in Washington. Over in Ankara . . . well, our diplomats are pretty darn quiet. The embassy's Twitter feed has discussed Syria, child labor, dance exhibitions, malnutrition, LGBT pride month . . . the last Tweet that could be construed as referring to the increasingly large demonstrations and brutal crackdowns was June 10. Here is the only comment on our embassy's web site:
"Of course, nobody could be happy to see those saddening images/pictures. I am not happy either. I wish a speedy recovery to all those injured; get well soon. But if you are asking me about U.S. foreign policy, as you know, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and the right to have peaceful protests are fundamentals of a democracy. I am not going to say anything further."
That's from May 31. So, one paragraph that sounds like it could have come from a Hallmark card. Hey, remember that Lady in Red? "Get Well Soon!"
"We wish a speedy recovery to all those injured!"
World . . . we are not answering our 3 a.m. phone calls, or any other time of day. Hope you can sort out your own issues, because for the foreseeable future, all you're going to be getting from us are statements about LGBT pride month.
You Want a Piece of Me?
I'm on a conservative blogger e-mailing list, and the group is split right down the middle over the controversy over Sarah Murnaghan, the ten-year-old girl suffering from end-stage cystic fibrosis whose family sought and received a transplant of an adult lung.
Half believed that it was outrageous that a rule -- in place because children are usually not good recipients of adult organs -- could prevent an innocent little girl from getting potentially lifesaving surgery. The other half saw this as a terrible precedent, that a photogenic little girl whose case became a media crusade had the rules changed for her individual circumstances -- meaning someone else won't get a lung because of this decision.
It turns out living donors can give quite a few parts of themselves: kidneys, part of their liver, a lung or part of a lung, part of the pancreas, or part of the intestines. "It is also possible for living donors to donate a lung or part of a lung, part of the pancreas, or part of the intestines. Although these organs do not regenerate, both the donated portion of the organ and the portion remaining with the donor are fully functioning."
Instead of asking people to "opt into" the system by indicating their willingness to be a donor, these experts say the assumption should be that everyone in the country should be considered a donor unless they "opt out." The latter proposal is called presumed-consent or default-to-donation.
"We have this voluntary opt-in system, but why don't we shift the system and have a default-to-donation system?" Caplan says.
He says other countries such as Spain have had some success with getting more organs with an opt-out system. Before the USA goes to this method, he says, it should be tested in a few states.
Joshua Sonett, chief of General Thoracic Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, says there would be plenty of organs if we had an "opt-out" system.
Fleming doesn't like the idea. "We would be moving from a system where we honor your wishes to be a donor to an (opt-out) system where it's the government's right to procure your organs unless you opt out." Fleming says many people would think this violates their personal rights, which could send them rushing to sign opt-out forms.
He says European countries using the opt-out method "are not doing any better than we are. I truly believe it would be a disaster if it happened here. I think we'd have millions and millions of people register not to be donors."
When we discussed this on "The Blaze" last Friday, our guest pointed out that "opt out" comes uncomfortably close to suggesting that your organs are the property of the state unless you specify otherwise.
Another more controversial idea -- but maybe more effective -- is the idea of paying people for organs. There is already a market for organs; unfortunately, it's the black market. You've got whole chunks of your body you don't need; why not turn them into cash?
I wished we had a way to test this idea -- and then I realized that we do, in the form of other countries.
In Australia, the government pays donors a small sum to cover the costs of lost work because of recovery time -- about $650 American dollars a week for up to six weeks. (Compensating recovery time seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it? How many folks out there would argue this would be a bad way to spend limited taxpayer dollars?)
But if you want to see a really thriving free-market system for organ donations, we have to look at . . . Iran. Really.
The Iranian system of compensating organ donors began in 1988, giving donors $1,200 and providing one year of limited health-insurance coverage. In addition, kidney recipients pay donors between $2,300 and $4,500. How has it worked out? In Iran, there is no waiting list for a kidney. There hasn't been one since 1999.
At long last, Americans are warming up to the idea of a market for all of the spare kidneys, bone marrow, liver chunks, and other life-saving organs that walking, talking, still-alive humans have to offer.
NPR asked 3,000 people what they thought about compensating live donors. A surprising 41 percent said they were OK with the idea of paying cash for organs.
As of today, there are 114,349 people on the donor waiting list, more than 50,000 of whom are waiting for kidneys.
ADDENDUM: Our Eliana Johnson: "Netroots conference puts out a warning: 'Please do not assume anyone's gender, even people you may have met in the past.'"
That . . . must be an odd conference.

Today the Senate voted down amendments to the Gang of Eight's bill that were proposed by Senators Thune and Vitter. Thune's amendment would have required 350 miles of the 700-mile border fence that was mandated by the 2006 Secure Fence Act to be completed prior to any legalization of illegal aliens. The remaining 350 miles would have to be built thereafter. Thune's amendment highlights what a joke the Gang's promises of border enforcement are. The fence has been required by an act of Congress for seven years, and so far less than 36 miles, out of 700, have been constructed. The Senate voted down Thune's amendment 54-39, with all members of the Gang voting No.
Next, David Vitter proposed an amendment that would have required that a 17-year-old Congressional mandate to establish a biometric exit-entry system (as recommended, also, by the 9/11 commission) be carried out prior to legalization. The Gang beat that one back, too.
As I have written many times, the biggest problems with the Gang's bill do not relate to border enforcement. The bill would be a disaster even if it included provisions that would block any future illegal immigration. But that doesn't mean that future illegal immigration is insignificant. Today's votes show that the purported commitment to border security on the part of the Gang and its supporters is a joke.
In recent years, Jeff Sessions has established himself as one of the soundest guys, with the best judgment, in the U.S. Senate. Until now, however, I have never thought of him as a humorist. Today he spoke for all of us conservatives who have been disappointed, if not appalled, by Marco Rubio's embrace of misguided immigration reform. Sessions said, in an interview: "Marco, there's somebody on television pretending to be you!" That's how I feel, too. Today's votes show how hopeless the Gang's legislation is. There is nothing left but to drive a stake through it in the House.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa has posted a statement on the IRS investigation that responds to Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings' announced intention to post the full investigative interview of IRS employee John Shafer online. Cummings has now posted the transcript here (part 1) and here (part 2), as the Washington Post reports. Here is Issa's statement in its entirety:
I am deeply disappointed that Ranking Member Cummings has decided to broadly disseminate and post online a 205 page transcript that will serve as a roadmap for IRS officials to navigate investigative interviews with Congress. After unsuccessfully trying to convince the American people that IRS officials in Washington did not play a role in inappropriate scrutiny of Tea Party groups and declaring on national television that the case of IRS targeting was 'solved' and Congress should 'move on,' this looks like flailing. Americans who think Congress should investigate IRS misconduct should be outraged by Mr. Cummings' efforts to obstruct needed oversight.
In the course of this fact based inquiry, Ranking Member Cummings has wrongly argued that questions about IRS conduct are somehow not legitimate. His own previous release of excerpts from this very same transcript undermines his claims that the Committee is somehow trying to keep some specific revelation from public view.
Just last week Cummings declared that "the [IRS] case is solved." In a clarification of his otherwise mystifying statement, he explained that "the witch hunt needs to end." For "witch hunt," read "investigation."
Having failed to shut the investigation down, Cummings is performing public relations on behalf of Obama and trying to complicate, if not obstruct, the committee's investigation. Whence the desperation? What do these folks have to hide?
Commenter David Hill reminded us yesterday of Steve Martin's excitement about new phone books (one of my favorite scenes, too), but my seriously analogous moment comes this week every year when BP releases it Annual Statistical Review of World Energy. For a data maven like me, it's a total geekfest. ("The new BP Review is out! The new BP review is out!") Since BP makes its data available on downloadable spreadsheets, I can freak freely crunching the data for myself, and noticing fun things. I'll roll out a few things here over the next few days.
Like the end of the whole peak oil hypothesis. The first figure below displays the 60 percent growth in proven global oil reserves over the last 20 years. This is not just the result of recent technological advances such as directional drilling and fracking: the second figure takes BP's data back to 1980, which shows a steady increase in reserves throughout the period amounting to a 144 percent increase. (That kink in the line in the late 1990s corresponds to the collapse in oil prices down to about $10 a barrel at the time. Simple lesson: price matters.) Click to enlarge either chart.
I hear that at the weekly House GOP conference, Speaker Boehner firmly committed to the Hastert rule on immigration reform legislation, with no wiggle room. Boehner explained that he, Pelosi, and Hastert have violated the rule when they had no leverage and other options were worse, e.g., with fiscal-cliff legislation. But this is not the case with immigration reform, he said.
Boehner's view, from what I'm hearing, is that President Obama doesn't want a bill. He wants an issue for 2014.
The way things are going for Obama, I can understand why.
Now I know what you're thinking: doesn't California Governor Jerry Brown deserve a coveted Power Line Green Weenie lifetime achievement award for some of the things he did 35 years ago, when he was governor first time around? Goes without saying. It was back during Brown's "Moonbeam" years that California embarked on its dirigisme energy policy, with some of the first major subsidies for wind and solar power that gave the nation its first major wind farms at Tehachapi and Altamont Passes, both of which produce about the same amount of electricity as a coal fired power plant, but take up 100 times the land area, not to mention more steel, etc.
Brown's Official State Portrait. No, really. . .
Right now Brown is a champion of California's recent mandate for the state to generate one-third its electricity from renewable sources by the year 2020. California has been nudging the energy market since back in the 1970s, and, like the Soviet economy in the mid-20th century, these efforts have been judged to be a great success. Starting under Brown in the mid-1970s, California embraced a "negawatt" strategy of encouraging energy conservation (typically called "demand-side management," or DSM) rather than siting new power sources, emphasizing more efficient appliance and building standards along with renewable energy from wind and solar power. (Oh yeah: those rolling blackouts back around 2000? Those were Enron's fault. Rinse and repeat.)
On the surface the result looks impressive on the surface: since 1970, while national per capital electricity consumption has risen by about one-third, per capita electricity consumption in California has remained flat. Today the average Californian uses 40 percent less electricity than the national average. Thus, even though California's household electricity rates are about one third higher than the national average (15 cents per Kwh in California versus 10 cents for the nation, according to recent Energy Information Administration figures), California consumers don't have to spend appreciably more than citizens of other states. No harm, no foul.
Problem is, there's a whole stack of studies from researchers at Stanford, UC Berkeley, and elsewhere that conclude California's energy profile has much more to do with its milder climate and its shrinking industrial base than deliberate policy. Just about every energy intensive industry, such as aerospace, that once called California home has left. The economists who've looked at the matter closely found that only about 20 percent of the difference in California's energy use can be attributed to policy. One study out of Berkeley actually found that the various energy efficiency mandates probably increase energy consumption in new construction-a phenomenon well known in the energy efficiency trade as the "rebound effect."
All of this is preface for Jerry Brown's latest act of prestidigitation involving California's attempt to solve global warming in one state: California's cap and trade policy. California adopted its own cap and trade policy a few years ago, with the revenues supposedly dedicated to green energy and other environmental projects. Guess what mom? Jerry Brown decided to raid the first $500 million in permit auction fees to help pay for welfare benefits in the state's general fund. The Wall Street Journal is all over this story today, with a warning for the nation as a whole:
California expects to generate $500 million this year from auctioning off permits to emit carbon, and between $2 billion and $14 billion annually by 2015. This rich new vein of revenues was supposed to flow to green programs (e.g., solar subsidies), but Governor Jerry Brown cut a deal with Democrats in the legislature to seize this year's proceeds to finance more generous welfare and Medicaid benefits. Environmentalists are suddenly stunned to discover that they're not exempt from Sacramento's generally accepted accounting principle of raiding internal accounts to backfill the budget. . .
California Democrats are proving that the real point of cap and trade is to give politicians another revenue stream for income redistribution while dodging accountability for raising taxes. That's worth keeping in mind when liberals resurrect the scheme for the entire U.S.
By the way, while we're on the subject of Jerry Brown, note above his official portrait, which appears on the third floor of the state capitol in Sacramento. I've often wondered how long it might take someone to notice if you stuck a piece of chewing gum on it. In any case, Brown's office won't yet say whether he'll have a second official portrait done for his non-consecutive governorship, but if he does, I suggest one modeled after this, which seems more appropriate for California's long suffering citizens.
UPDATE: Actually, if we just tweak his existing portrait just a little, we're more than halfway to Munch-land (either that or we've made him a space alien):
Discerning Victory in SCOTUS' Ruling on Arizona's Citizenship Requirement
While many progressive activists are claiming success in the aftermath of the ruling in Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc., the true long-term win stands with proponents of integrity and decentralized control of elections. The progressive goal of this case was to force a ruling that left the federal government with supreme authority on voter registration protocols. Further, they wanted to strip states of the ability to create their own registration forms and disallow them the ability to verify information given on an application. In reality, the opposite occurred.
The Court ruled that Arizona was not allowed to amend the federal form for voter registration outright - but suggested how states could pursue the ability to demand concrete evidence of citizenship using federal forms in the future. In the meantime, there is nothing keeping Arizona (or any other state) from creating its own registration form at will - as long as they accept the federal form as is.

Congressmen Poe and Jordan Question FBI about Targeting True the Vote
Are you ready to get back in the game?
Voting issues remain on the front page seven months after a federal election - that's unheard of. For the first time in generations, Americans are engaged in a national debate on the process of voting mechanisms. We at True the Vote aim to convert that interest and debate into action on the local level. With all of the recent national media coverage received involving our fight with the IRS, we've received an amazing amount of interest in volunteer opportunities. We encourage you to join the movement if you are still on the sidelines.
As you can see, the election process does not end. If you do not stand up for accountability in your community, who will?
There's no shortage of work to be done. If you are ready to make an impact in your community for the benefit of all of your neighbors, volunteer with True the Vote today.
Noncitizens registering and voting illegally is a real problem that compromises the integrity of our elections. Arizona is particularly affected because it has a large population of illegal immigrants, so they enacted a law requiring those registering to vote to provide proof of citizenship.
In a decision written by Justice Antonin Scalia and joined by six other justices...the Supreme Court said that Arizona must "accept and use" the federal mail-in voter registration form specified by the federal National Voter Registration Act (the Motor Voter law). Arizona's requirement that proof of citizenship be submitted with the federal form is preempted.
Heritage's step-by-step plan proposes a positive path to immigration reform and solves the critical problems of immigration and border security without the need for a costly, complex, "comprehensive" bill that grants amnesty to illegal immigrants.

America should be concerned not just by what NSA leaker Edward Snowden has already revealed but by what he could give away in the future.
Snowden has fled to Hong Kong, where he says he enjoys free speech protections. But he may have miscalculated a bit: Hong Kong is part of China and under the authority of its communist government.
"What happens when NSA leaker extraordinaire Edward Snowden stops being a 'guest' of Hong Kong and becomes a subject of a People's Republic of China (PRC) Ministry of State Security interrogation?" Heritage Foundation expert Steven Bucci asks.
Especially since he revealed that the U.S. has been spying on Chinese computers, Snowden has become a very important asset to the Chinese government-and a liability for us.
"What information beyond the fact that we hack does this guy have that the Chinese could possibly get out of him?" Bucci asks. "This is a very, very dangerous thing."
A Congressional hearing this week could determine whether the United States will abandon its bureaucratic controls on the export of liquefied natural gas.
Today, exporting LNG to another country is legal, but it requires approval by the Department of Energy. As with any bureaucratic process, this means long and costly delays, Heritage's Bryan Riley explains.
Thanks to this unnecessary government involvement, LNG producers face major obstacles to exportation. This makes it easier for foreign energy companies other countries to swoop in and take opportunities that Americans could've had.
As Riley points out, "allowing those private producers to sell to anyone they want fits best with U.S. constitutional values."
Join us this Friday, June 21, for a conference call on the Gang of Eight immigration reform. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Heritage Foundation expert Robert Rector, and Heritage Action for America's Tripp Baird will take your questions on this costly proposal. To participate, just call 877-229-8493 ext. 15366 on Friday at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
Heritage Foundation scholar and former Attorney General Ed Meese, who was actively involved in the last major immigration bill in 1986, has a letter in the Wall Street Journal reminding lawmakers not to repeat the mistakes of the 1986 amnesty.
The Gang of Eight immigration legislation contains "pretty much the same 'penalties and hurdles'" as the 1986 legislation, Meese writes. Reagan admitted the 1986 reform was amnesty. That amnesty, Meese writes, had consequences today's lawmakers should keep in mind.

Senate Votes on Amendments to Gang of Eight Bill Today
Tell Your Senators to Support Thune #1197 and Vitter #1228!
Dear FAIR Supporter,
Debate in the U.S. Senate continues today on the Gang of Eight's amnesty legislation, S. 744.
Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has scheduled a series of votes to take place this afternoon at 3 p.m. FAIR is asking its supporters to call their Senators and ask them to vote for two key border security amendments: Amendment #1197 by Senator John Thune (R-SD), and Amendment #1228 by Senator David Vitter (R-LA).
Call your Senators using the Capitol Switchboard NOW: 1-888-978-3094.
The amendments would do the following:
1. Senator Thune's Border Fence Amendment (#1197)
Amendment #1197 would require construction of half of the 700 miles of reinforced, double-layered fencing along the Southern border (as initially required by the Secure Fence Act) as a precondition to illegal aliens receiving provisional legal status under the bill. Then, illegal aliens granted this provisional status cannot apply for green cards until the remaining half of the fence is built. As written, S. 744 does not require a single mile of fencing to be built.
2. Senator Vitter's US-VISIT Amendment (#1228)
Amendment #1228 would prohibit illegal aliens from getting any legal status until the Secretary of Homeland Security certifies that the biometric entry-exit system known as US-VISIT has been fully implemented at every land, sea, and air port of entry, and Congress passes a joint resolution stating that such entry-exit system has been sufficiently implemented. As written, S. 744 does not require an entry-exit system be biometric, nor that it be in place at all ports of entry, prior to any amnesty.
These amendments are critical to ensuring border security comes first in the Gang of Eight bill!
Call your Senators using the Capitol Switchboard NOW: 1-888-978-3094. Tell them to VOTE YES on Thune #1197 and Vitter #1228 to S. 744 TODAY!
Sincerely,
FAIR
P.S. Voting starts at 3 p.m. today, so your calls are needed now! Call your U.S. Senators at 1-888-987-3094 and tell them to support the Thune Amendment #1197 and Vitter Amendment #1228.
'Free at last': LA State Senator's stunning vid explaining why he left the 'government plantation'
Former Democratic Louisiana State Senator Elbert Guillory produced a video explaining in detail why he chose to leave the Democratic Party. Based on the content, it's hard to imagine how he ever was a Democrat in the first place. It's a moving video and one that is very, very difficult to disagree with. See the video and Glenn's reaction on radio today.
Was John Roberts intimidated into ruling in favor of Obamacare?
On radio this morning, Glenn interviewed Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) about his new book Why John Roberts Was Wrong About Healthcare. Was Chief Justice John Roberts coerced into switching his vote? Why does the argument that Roberts made a brilliant political decision not make sense? Sen. Lee explained this and much more. WATCH
Yeah, right! Obama defends his 'transparent' administration
During an interview with Charlie Rose, President Obama touted his administration's 'transparent' handling of the NSA surveillance programs. He also may or may not have taken credit for creating the FISA court system - even though he openly opposed the surveillance techniques and courts as a senator. In the words of the New York Times, Obama has 'now lost all credibility on the issue.' See more HERE.
How progressives on the left and right killed tens of thousands in Syria
Glenn explained on radio today how all of the violence in the Middle East has come to pass because of one thing: progressives. Glenn interviews Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach about immigration protest
Yesterday, Glenn shared the story of Kansas State Attorney General Kris Kobach who was targeted over the weekend by members of the pro-immigration reform group Sunflower Community Action Network. Kobach, one of the architects of the Arizona immigration bill, called into the radio program this morning to speak about the nearly 700 protesters from the ACORN affiliated group who marched outside his house and why he will not be coerced into backing down from his stance on immigration. Watch the entire interview HERE.
Is this America's Sumner moment?
Glenn told the story of Charles Sumner, who stood up to slavery on the floor of Congress and was beaten to within an inch of his life, right there in front of his Congressional colleagues. Those in power were desperately clinging on to what authority they had and could not see what is right. Sounds a lot like today. America is supporting terrorists in the Syrian conflict and failing to see the obvious evil we are providing aid to. Glenn had more on radio.
