Are you on the list? Are you one of the millions of Americans that have been designated a threat to national security by the U.S.
government? Will you be subject to detention when martial law is imposed during a major national emergency? As you will see below, there is actually a list that contains the names of at least 8 million Americans known as
Main Core
that the U.S. intelligence community has been compiling since the 1980s.
quoted a couple of old magazine articles that mentioned this program, and I was intrigued because I didn't know what it was. So I decided to look into
Main Core
, and what I found out was absolutely stunning - especially in light of what
Edward Snowden has just revealed to the world. It turns out that the U.S. government is not just gathering information on all of us. The truth is that the U.S. government has used this information to create a list of threats to national security that the government would potentially watch, question or even detain during a national crisis. If you have ever been publicly critical of the government, there is a very good chance that you are on that list.
The following is how Wikipedia describes Main Core...
Main Core is the code name of a database maintained since the 1980s by the federal government of the United States. Main Core contains personal and financial data of millions of U.S. citizens believed to be threats to national security. The data, which comes from the NSA, FBI, CIA, and other sources, is collected and stored without warrants or court orders. The database's name derives from the fact that it contains "copies of the 'main core' or essence of each item of intelligence information on Americans produced by the FBI and the other agencies of the U.S. intelligence community."
It was Christopher Ketchum of Radar Magazine that first reported on the existence of Main Core. At the time, the shocking information that he revealed did not get that much attention. That is quite a shame, because it should have sent shockwaves across the nation...
There is an awesome application for computer and cell phone called 2ND VOTE (2ndvote.org) Want to know what companies support conservative issue and what companies support liberal agendas. It rates the companies and tells you how they finance different issues. Please take a few minutes to watch a short video on this application. Politicians understand only two things 1. Getting power 2. Keeping power. Business too understands just 2 things 1. Getting your money 2. Getting more of your money. Start using the free market system while we still have it. There is ALWAYS an alternative.
PLEASE SHARE WITH EVERYONE you know. Post on FaceBook and Twitter. This software was developed by a concerned conservative from Tennessee.

The movie " Corpus Christi " is due to be released this June to August. A disgusting film set to appear in America later this year depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals! As a play, this has already been in theaters for a while. It's called " Corpus Christi " which means "The Body of Christ". It's revolting mockery of our Lord. But we can make a difference.
That's why I am sending this e-mail to you. If you do send this around, we just might be able to prevent this film from showing in Canada and America . Let's stand for what we believe in and stop the mockery of Jesus Christ our Savior. Where do we stand as Christians? At the risk of a bit of inconvenience, I'm forwarding this to all I think would appreciate it, too. Please help us prevent such offenses against our Lord. There is no petition to sign, no time limit, or minimum number of people to send this to.. It will take you less than 2 minutes!
If you are not interested and do not have the 2 minutes it will take to do this, please don't complain when God does not have time for you because He is far busier than we are. Hey it's worth a shot! Apparently, some regions in Europe have already banned the film. All we need is a lot of prayer and a lot of e-mails.

Google Needs Extra Time to Spy on Your Kids
It seems that Google is constantly falling afoul of conservatives, consumers, pundits, regulators and really everyone else on earth (except for the Obama campaign) for its privacy-infringing tendencies.
It got hammered for "alleged" spying in the Safarigate scandal, where it wound up agreeing to a record-breaking $22.5 million fine in connection with charges it surreptitiously tracked Apple Safari users who Google had said could opt out of tracking, and did what Google said was necessary to opt out. This spying of course enabled Google to grab data it shouldn't have had, to improve its highly profitable targeted ad business, and do it in a way that amounted to a violation of its contract with users. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
Patriotic Summer Movie!
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GODS AND GENERALS AND GETTYSBURG COMES THE LIBERTY MOVIE OF THE YEAR
RON MAXWELL'S COPPERHEAD
For anyone who reveres and believes in the preservation of the Constitution of the United States, Copperhead is a must see this summer!
Copperhead is unlike any Civil War movie to date. It is a film of the war at home - of a family ripped apart by war, of a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime. A story of the violent passions and burning feuds that set ablaze the homefront during the Civil War, Copperhead the movie is also a timeless and deeply moving examination of the price of dissent, the place of the individual amidst the hysteria of wartime, and the terrible price of war - a cost measured not in dollars but in fractured families, broken loves, and men dead before their time.
Based on the extraordinary novel by Harold Frederic, who witnessed these conflicts firsthand as a small child, Copperhead tells the story of Abner Beech, a stubborn and righteous farmer of Upstate New York, who defies his neighbors and his government in the bloody and contentious autumn of 1862.
June meeting: Thursday June 13, 7pm at Rock (857 Main St, Harleysville)
1. Pension Reform Pamphlet / Budget Proposal
a) Gov. Corbett's budget proposal contains elements of public pension reform (and liquor privatization). It is due June 30, so we must inform PA citizens to support it. I've attached a pamphlet I made for PA's public pension crisis. Print it out and place it on as many front porches as you can (no mailboxes) before June 30. If you can't print "manual duplex" (printing on both sides), you can pick some up from our house any time - there will be a box on our porch with copies inside starting Tuesday June 11. We're at 304 Shirley Drive, Harleysville.
b) Call/email/meet with your representative yourself about pension reform and liquor privatization. You know the urgency from Bill H's presentation at the May meeting. Dr. Baumgartner made great talking points for you to pick and choose from, pasted below. Find your reps here: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/
2. Audit the IRS Rally in DC
Tea Party Patriots national is organizing an Audit the IRS Rally in DC on Wednesday June 19 from noon - 2pm at the West Lawn of the US Capitol. As of yet there are no buses, but I can work on getting a van if there's enough interest in going (and there ought to be!). Email us at central.montco.ptpp@gmail.com or call/text me 610-717-6978 up until may 14 to get a spot.
3. No Flag Day this year
Just too busy to get it together, started too late, we can't have it on Flag Day (June 14) b/c that's a Friday and the bank we use for the venue is open until 8pm. We'll come back stronger for next year's.

LEGISLATIVE TALKING POINTS Pick and choose from these suggestions, Add your own
PENNSYLVANIA PENSION REFORM
* I support Gov Corbett's budget proposal that includes badly needed pension reform
* I ASK THAT YOU SUPPORT GOV CORBETT'S PENSION REFORM PLAN AND ADVISE ME YOUR DECISION
* The $41 pension debt hole is deep enough, it is time to reform an unsustainable public employee pension plan
* As a retiree I have a very limited source of funds to pay increasing school taxes due to rising pension costs
* It is past time to right size the public employee pension plan that the legislature has bloated with unjustified added benefits
* My school expenses will increase at least 3% not for education but only for pension cost increase
* Lack of reform will cause the cost of pensions for us taxpayers to increase 260% or $4.5 BILLION by 2016.
* My taxes will increase over $1,000 just for employee pension increase
LIBERTY FOR LIQUOR
* I support HB 790 that will privatize our state operated liquor stores has been introduced in the House
* I ASK THAT YOU SUPPORT HB 790 AND ADVISE ME YOUR DECISION
* The state operated liquor stores are a sad sack operation that only offer very choices and limited hours. The employees have very limited product choice.
* As a member of the Tea Party I support the three core principles of Fiscal Responsibility, Limited Government and Free Markets. State operated retail businesses violate these fundamentals.
* Forty eight states long ago have successfully abandoned state operated liquor business with no increase in alcohol related deaths, accidents and abuse.
* Private enterprise will bring alcohol taxes back to Pennsylvania that have been flowing to our free enterprise our border states.
* There are allegations of misdeeds by the political appointed alcohol commission members
* The state operated system has made many mistakes at taxpayers expense including the failed wine kiosk system.
* Over 70% of customers patronizing state operated liquor facilities want the state out of the business.

Gun Owners to Rally in Doylestown Saturday
Saturday's rally of Concerned Gun Owners of Bucks County will advocate support for PA House Bill 357, which would make federal gun control laws unenforceable in the state of Pennsylvania.
Local gun rights activists will rally Saturday in Doylestown to support state legislation that would make federal gun control laws unenforceable in Pennsylvania.
Saturday's rally, which organizers say will be peaceful, will advocate for PA House Bill 357. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe of Butler County, would make any federal law that attempts to register, restrict or ban a firearm or to limit the size of a magazine unenforceable in Pennsylvania. The bill would impose penalties for enforcement.
Representative Paul Clymer, who is a co-sponsor of the bill, will speak at the rally.

Audit The IRS Rally: Save The Date!
Were you targeted by the IRS for your political beliefs? Did you receive extra scrutiny for promoting limited government, the constitution, and fiscal responsibility? If not, will you be next?
What: Audit the IRS Rally When: Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from Noon - 2pm Where: West Lawn of the US Capitol
Join us on Wednesday, June 19th at 12pm on the West Lawn of the US Capitol as we come together to rally against the IRS. It's time that Washington sees first-hand just how outraged the American people are by these discriminatory acts.
In the spirit of what Becky Gerritson of Wetumpka Tea Party so elegantly said in her testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee:
"We are patriotic Americans. We peacefully assemble. We petition our government. We exercise our right to free speech and we don't understand why our government tried to stop us. We aren't here as a serf or a vassal. We're not begging our lords for mercy. We are born free American citizens and we're telling our government that you've forgotten your place. Its not your responsibility to look our for our well being and monitor our speech. Its not your right to assert an agenda. The post that you occupy exists to preserve American liberty. You've sworn to perform that duty and you have faltered."
Becky Gerritson gives testimony to Ways and Means Committee on IRS targeting her Tea Party group
WE'RE GOING TO WASHINGTON, D.C! On Wednesday, June 19, 2013 Tea Party Patriots (and maybe some other grassroots groups), are putting together an "Audit the IRS" Rally in D.C. Right now, the bus situation is up in the air, but TPP is working on it. In the meantime, I suggest that as group leaders/coordinators, you put together car pools and get as many of your members to Washington, D.C. as possible on the 19th. PLEASE DO NOT WAIT FOR TPP to make bus arrangements! If they put something together, we'll know about it and get the word out immediately. Set up carpools and be on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol by 12:00PM. If you're carpooling and you live in the Philadelphia area, leave no later than 6:00AM, otherwise you'll spend 2-3 hours trying to get from Delaware to D.C. As far as parking goes, you can park your car at Union Station for $20.00 for the day and walk or take a cab over to the Capitol. Below is a link from the TPP website. Please pass it on to everyone on your groups' email list and get as many of your group members to D.C. as possible.
If you are a member or if you are interested in going with us, our group, the Philadelphia Tea Party Patriots-Lower Bucks will be carpooling. We will be leaving from our house at 6:00AM SHARP! (If you're late, you can catch up with us on I-95!) Our address is 3585 Aster Avenue, Feasterville Trevose, PA 19053. I will be driving and I'm asking for other volunteers to drive also.

June 19 - 21 we will convene at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC for our fourth annual National Conference & Legislative Briefing.
And here's some really great news: This year's registration fee is only $229! Register by April 15th and you'll receive our "Early Bird" rate of just $189!
We also offer again this year special benefits for Patriot Eagle and Patriot sponsors.
We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:
Steven Emerson - Journalist, author, and the Executive Editor of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. A. M. Rosenthal, late-managing editor of The New York Times, described Emerson as "one of the nation's best national security correspondents."
John Guandolo - Former FBI agent and one of America's leading authorities on the Muslim Brotherhood and its inner workings in America. Guandolo spoke at our conference in 2011 and received rave reviews from conference attendees!
Ezra Levant - Canadian lawyer, author, newspaper columnist with Sun Media, and former publisher of the Western Standard. Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!
The National Conference & Legislative Briefing will begin on Wed. evening, June 19th, and conclude on Friday, June 21st at noon, with additional optional training sessions Friday afternoon.
It will again feature our very popular Capitol Hill Awards Luncheon and our signature gala banquet-and of course, our Legislative Briefing, where Members of Congress will brief you on various issues and answer your questions.
So make your plans now to join us in our nation's capital for what promises to be our best National Conference & Legislative Briefing ever!
More details to come!
Dear RedStater,
We are excited to announce that Governor Nikki Haley will be attending this year's RedState Gathering!
We'll be in New Orleans August 2nd and 3rd with an all-star line-up to celebrate our Fifth Annual event. Nikki Haley hosted us two years ago in South Carolina where she hosted a great welcome reception and gave a fantastic speech that really got the crowd fired up on Saturday morning. We are thrilled to welcome her back to the RedState Gathering in New Orleans.
Confirmed speakers include:
Ted Cruz
Ken Cuccinelli
Nikki Haley
Bobby Jindal
Jim Bridenstine
Speaker invitations have also been extended to:
-
Gov. Rick Perry (TX)
-
Sen. Marco Rubio (FL)
-
Liz Cheney
-
Rep. Mick Mulvaney (SC)
-
Sen. Tim Scott (SC)
-
Rep. Steve Scalise (LA)
-
And more!
We'll have plenty more speaker announcements coming shortly, but we're guaranteed to have a good mix of elected officials, potential 2014 cycle candidates, and other RedState friends. Remember, the Gathering is unique in conservative events in that speakers pay their own way and are required to take questions from folks in the audience.
What better excuse for a trip to New Orleans? And, don't forget, your registration even includes most of your food, as well as access to deeply discounted hotel rooms.
As some of you may know, I am associated with Coventry Christian Schools as a parent of a graduate (2010) and as member of the Board of Trustees. Last October we spent a wonderful evening honoring Mark Niehls at our revitalized Founder's Dinner and celebrated our shared heritage in the remarkable community that is Coventry Christian Schools. Our vision for future Founder's Dinners is to inspire and inform not only our alumni and current CCS families but to inspire and inform the Tri-County Area and even our region by hosting speakers and artists who can uniquely assist us in celebrating the heritage, core values, and mission of CCS while also lifting our vision for an even greater future built upon the foundation of our past. The caliber of our speakers and guest artists should provide us with wonderful opportunities to share our CCS story with new partners in Christian education. Proceeds from the dinner will be applied to our annual Coventry Kids Fund for CCS scholarships.
This year we are proud to announce that our distinguished guest and speaker is Dr. Benjamin Carson, and our dinner's theme is "Faith of Our Fathers: The Role of Faith in American Schools." Please join us as we welcome Dr. Carson to the Tri-County Area and celebrate the great things God is doing at CCS!
Dr. Carson is a highly regarded neurosurgeon and motivational speaker who has addressed various audiences across the country. He is one of the most honored and recognized physicians in the world and holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees along with hundreds of awards and citations. He is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He is the author of five books and is the founder of the Carson Scholars Fund. The 2009 award-winning movie entitled Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Carson, premiered on TNT and is based on his memoir. Dr. Carson is an authentic disciple of Christ, has been married to his wife Candy for more than 37 years, and is the father of three sons.
The 2013 Founder's Dinner, which will once again be a part of our Homecoming festivities, will be held at the historic Sunnybrook Ballroom in Pottstown on Sunday, October 13th, 2013. Doors will open at 4:30pm, followed by dinner at 5:15. Dress will be business/professional. Tickets will be priced at $100 until May 15th, then will be $125, so reserve your tickets for the reduced price.
Due to Dr. Carson's international reputation and recent prominence in the media, including his recent speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, we fully anticipate that this event will sell out quickly once advertised to the public. Tickets go on sale to the public April 15. If you are interested in attending, tickets can be purchased online. I will send the link out to those who wish to go on April 15
th
. While online reservations are preferred because they facilitate efficient event planning, you may also complete a paper order form, which I can forward to you as well.
All of us at Coventry Christian Schools, look forward to sharing this very special evening with you and acquainting you with the school and its mission!
Blessings,
Christine Gordon

Reality Check.....COMMON CORE EDUCATION = COMMUNISM IN AMERICA!
Common Core Education is the INDOCTRINATION of our CHILDREN.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE GOP ESTABLISHMENT RHETORIC FROM MIKE HUCKABEE!!!
Reality Check- just in case you ever had a doubt......MIke Huckabee is a typical GOP Establishment person.
Mike Huckabee is now championing Common Core Education on Fox News for the GOP! How disgusting is that?!?!? "Mike Huckabee Urges Conservatives to Back Common Core Standards"
This is another reason why Constitutional Conservatives MUST leave the GOP and beware of what you hear on Fox News. Fox News continues to move to the left - to the liberal progressive side of issues. That is the very very sad but true fact. Mr. GOP Huckabee....."It's disturbing to me there have been criticisms of these standards directed by other conservatives including the RNC," Huckabee wrote. "The truth of the matter is, these criticisms are short-sighted." see attached article from Sunshine News. Send a message to Mr. GOP Huckabee at http://www.mikehuckabee.com/masterfeedback and send a loud message to the every more liberal progressive Fox News! Americans that believe in our Constitution must not be silent about this!
Do NOT let Fox News get away with promoting the very liberal progressive Common Core Education that promotes the ideology that American Children are Common/Community Property!
Do NOT let Fox News get away with promoting the loss of state's rights and the federal government taking over Education. WE NEED TO ABOLISH THE FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - NOT EMPOWER IT!
If you support SOCIALISM AND COMMUNISM FOR THE U.S.A. then COMMON CORE EDUCATION IS FOR YOU. If you believe in the U.S.A. CONSTITUTION....then YOU WILL LOUDLY AND OPENLY REJECT AND OPPOSE COMMON CORE EDUCATION AND ANYONE THAT PROMOTES IT!!
Common Core Education is the indoctrination of American Children. This is NOT acceptable if you still believe in FREEDOM!!
The proponents of Common Core say that the standards ARE state led because they were developed by The National Governors' Association.
Well, perhaps this is true in a way that is very disturbing! Listen to this speech at the 1989 NGA conference on education (at 12:48).
The Development of Common Core, Explained by Michael Chapman
The video says this is a clip from the 1989 National Governors'Assoc conference on Education:
Sr. Director of Mid-Continental Regional Education Laboratory, Dr. Shirley McCune
She says about education:
#1) Total transformation of our society
#2) Teaching of facts and information (knowledge) is no longer the primary purpose of education
#3) Close connection between economic (sustainable) development and human capitol (human resource labor for a planned economy)
A group that allowed this kind of rhetoric to be said at their meeting? I don't think I want them developingeducational standards! Please read to the bottom for transcripts from the 1987 NGA meetings chaired by Bill Clinton. These transcripts are eye-opening. They are clearly more concerned with workers for the manufacturing. They seem to have concerns that we have students who can't read well enough (non-English speaking especially) to function in the manufacturing plants, and then on the other end of the spectrum... too many with higher ed degrees who don't WANT to work in the manufacturing. So... what to do about all this? Hummm.... standards! Make sure they read well enough to function as the industrial workers, but not so well that they don't want to!!! This is the John D. Rockefeller goal of the early 20th century when he started pushing for compulsory government schooling and funding the building of government schools.
NOW.... review the transcripts below of the conferences chaired by Bill Clinton: National Governor's Association website (find all annual meetings here with transcriptsm- ) 1986-87 NGA Chair Gov. Bill Clinton's Initiative
Making America Work: Productive People, Productive Policies
1987 Annual meeting.See page 34of this document to see how those governors seem to be concerned that we aren't training our students for the "workforce." They are concerned that the professors of higher ed are telling students to strive for more than the job of working in the manufacturing plants. On page 40 they start talking about standards needed in education. " See page 42 with this statement by Governor Sinner (great name!) to Lee Iacoccoa: "But you also made a point about the terrific cost to industry of the disparity between states in these regulations and I wondered, with all the fuss and the furor that we make over states' rights...." http://www.nga.org/files/live/sites/NGA/files/pdf/1987NGAAnnualMeeting.pdf
June 11, 2013: Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) leads the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee in a markup of the Strengthening America's Schools Act of 2013, an education initiative to replace No Child Left Behind. http://www.c-spanvideo.org/event/220036
At the June 10 Common Core forum in Fayette County, Superintendent Barge stated over and over again that if Georgia wants to change these standards at any time, we have the ability to do so.The testimony below contradicts this belief by Superintendent Barge and confirms that states who adopted the Common Core standards DO NOT have the ability to change the standards in any way on their own.
2:23:00 - Rep. Tim Scott discusses his amendment to Harkin's bill. Instead of states being forced to adopt blanket standards like Common Core as a prerequisite for funding, let's put decision-making back in the hands of parents and teachers in our communities."
2:31:00 - It is admitted that states who want to change the CC standards, the Secretary of Education would have to approve it. States DO NOT have the ultimate decision making abilities!
2:39:00 - Alexander reads page 89 of the bill stating that any changes to standards MUST go through the Secretary of Education for approval. As are most of the amendments offered by Republicans to this education bill, the Scott Amendment is defeated 12-10.
DATA COLLECTING: Senator Burr at the 1:00:00 mark reveals information about ADDITIONAL data points that this legislation will add to the data mining. He says that his count is now 500 data points.
TEACHER EVALUATIONS: Senator Alexander at 2:00:00 mark discusses his amendment to end federally mandated school and teacher evaluations. He says states had a "gun to their head" to adopt the teacher evaluations because they were desperate for NCLB waivers. He makes the charge that the Harkin bill creates a "NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD." The Gates Foundation involvement is mentioned frequently.
Harkin says over and over "this is voluntary." If states don't want to implement the programs in the bill we just don't accept the money!" More strong evidence that our states need to "just say no" to all federal education dollars. As is pointed out in this debate: Any private business that entered into a partnership where the partner who contributed 10% funding got 80-90% of the control (as is the case with education funding under NCLB and Common Core) the partnership is DOOMED TO FAIL!

Donna Holt from Campaign for Liberty has also written extensively on this issue and her research provided valuable information both to James Simpson and Right Side News, and most importantly, the citizens of Virginia to get them involved at the local level.
Sustainable Development is code for a policy designed to transform human society, essentially eliminating individual life decisions and replacing them with top - down, one-size-fits-all government control. In steady fashion, the agenda for this new policy, designed at the international level, is put into place piece by piece with a new government council here, and new regulation there, each designed to appear as a "local" development program. Like the proverbial frog in the slowly boiling pot, many Americans fail to notice the rise in government heat.
The main course of action to impose the new agenda is through the pretense of environmental protection; "Sorry about your rights, but if we don't save the planet, then we will all perish!" And so with the devastation of a thousand pin pricks, America and its form or government is being changed through the creation of non-elected boards, councils and regional governments, designed to enforce the new regulations and "assure that we protect the environment."
The pin pricks come disguised as such issues as controls on community development; controls on use of private property; controls on use of open space; creation of development areas, many times under the excuse of historic preservation; communities designed on the blue print of pack and stack housing; making it harder to drive as roads are narrowed, even forcing cars to share the road with bicycles; the enforcement of expensive mass transit boondoggle projects; and the never ending spending spree on inefficient, unworkable alternative energy, such as wind and solar power.
In fact, control of energy and water are the two most effective tools in the enforcement of the Sustainable Development agenda. Without energy and water, human society stops. Using strict controls on how, or even if, energy and water can be used provides government with the power to dictate every aspect of society.

In February, Governor Corbett did the right thing and rejected Medicaid expansion on the behalf of all Pennsylvania families and taxpayers. However, the special interests who benefit-hospitals and insurers-continue to push for unaffordable expansion and are pressuring Governor Corbett and the legislature to reverse course. (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=duLWIdMNLbJXLcNYE&s=glLVKhO4KrJZJ8NQJsF&m=dsJRL9MHLdKQJbL)
Medicaid lets families down. Healthcare results for Medicaid recipients dramatically lag those on private insurance and, in many cases, lag even uninsured patients too. Dramatically expanding enrollment doesn't fix those problems. It only makes it worse.
Additionally, expanding Medicaid means an additional 800,000 to 1,000,000 enrollees costing Pennsylvania taxpayers at least $3 billion over the next ten years.
You and I can't afford this expansion. We must act now. As negotiators in Harrisburg finalize the state budget, legislators will be tempted to insert unaffordable Medicaid expansion.
Pa. Senate passes $2.5 billion transportation bill
By Angela Couloumbis and Megan Rogers, Inquirer Staff Writers
POSTED: June 07, 2013
HARRISBURG - The state Senate approved a $2.5 billion transportation-funding bill Wednesday, aimed at repairing thousands of aging bridges and miles of roads while pumping more money into transit, setting the stage for a fight over the bill's fate in the House.
The plan, championed by Transportation Committee Chairman John Rafferty (R., Montgomery), ups the ante on the $1.8 billion proposal Gov. Corbett unveiled in February to address the state's infrastructure problems.
Rafferty's bill, was approved on a 45-5 vote, would increase driver's license and vehicle-registration fees, and put a hefty surcharge on speeders and others who violate traffic laws. Like Corbett's plan, the bill would also lift the cap on the oil-franchise tax to raise revenue, and reduce the per-gallon flat tax at the pump by two cents a gallon.
Though it received overwhelming support Wednesday in the Senate by both Democrats and Republicans, the issue remains controversial in the Capitol and faces an uncertain future in the House.
A number of House members, including many conservative Republicans, have questioned the price tag and wondered whether the amount being dedicated is necessary to improve the state's transportation infrastructure. Legislators, many facing reelection next year, also worry about backlash over raising fees on motorists, a move likely to be branded by opponents as a tax increase.
In 2012, Ted Cruz was elected as the 34th U.S. Senator from Texas. Prior to that, he served for five years as Solicitor General of Texas and was for five years a partner at one of the nation's largest law firms. The following is adapted from a speech delivered at Hillsdale College's 161st Commencement, held in the College's Biermann Athletic Center on May 11, 2013.
Today is a day of celebration. For you graduates, it's a day to celebrate your hard work, your commitment, time, energy, passion, and prayers that you have put in to graduate from Hillsdale College. It's also a day to celebrate the sacrifice and dedication your family has put in to get you here. I am honored to join you today-but let me say I fully recognize that the most forgettable part of this important day is going to be the politician delivering your commencement speech.
This morning I had the opportunity to tour your wonderful campus, and one of the highlights for me was the statue of Margaret Thatcher. I understand that when the statue was unveiled, she sent a letter of praise that read: "Hillsdale College symbolizes everything that is good and true in America. You uphold the principles and cherish the values which have made your country a beacon of hope." I couldn't agree more.
There are commencements being held on campuses all over the country this spring, but this one is different. Hillsdale, it is known across the country, is in a class by itself. Those graduating from other colleges are being told to go out and make something of themselves. But for the men and women receiving their degrees here today, expectations are higher. Because of the education you received here, you are uniquely prepared to provide desperately needed, principled leadership to your families, your churches, your communities, your country, and your fellow man. While other graduates have been exposed to college courses such as "Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame," you have been grounded in an understanding of our Constitution and of the freedom it was designed to preserve.
So many conservatives have been dancing around the issue of Senator Marco Rubio's collaboration with Chuck Schumer to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
We have blamed his staff. We have blamed Democrats. We all like and respect the Senator, even if we disagree on this issue. We do not want to blame him for the mess the GOP now finds itself in holding a legislative tiger by the tail.
But having, by virtue of my radio show, listened over and over to those awful pro-immigration reform ads between my monologues, I think we need to stop playing games.
I say this because either Marco Rubio is being played the fool or we are being played the fool by Senator Rubio. He has become the face of support for this legislation and much of the support of the legislation from those on the right has come because of the good will so many of us have for Senator Rubio.
I am in the awkward position of being to the left of the Republican base. I support immigration reform that leaves illegal aliens in the United States and provides them a path to legal work, though not citizenship. I know a number of illegal aliens and represented a good many of them when I was a lawyer. They, having been unfairly treated by others due to their status, relied on me to redress clear wrongs against them.
These were good, hardworking people who wanted to comply with the law, wanted to work, and wanted to send money home to support families in their native countries. They did not want citizenship. They wanted a paycheck. I am to the left of my readers in supporting their right to stay here and earn a paycheck. I am to the left of my readers in that I oppose mandatory E-Verify. In my mind, no employer should ever have to ask the government if it can or cannot hire a worker.
But I am to the right of the Senate Republicans and Senator Rubio. The solution they propose will do nothing to stem the tide of illegal aliens coming into this country. This law will expand bureaucracy and will, claims to the contrary notwithstanding, expand the welfare state.
What's more, Senate Republicans and Democrats are now collaborating on "improvements" to the legislation that do not actually improve the law, but rather provide cover for various Democrats and Republicans to make sure the votes are there for passage while ensuring those in tough spots can still vote against it and claim they opposed what they really, privately support.
Senator John Cornyn, chief among the Republicans now, is playing that game. He is offering up an amendment that supposedly will secure the border before setting up a pathway to citizenship. His amendment really does not do that, but provides a cover for Republicans to claim the amendment, and the law once the amendment passes, would.

Speaker Boehner announced that he will bring the farm bill to the floor and personally vote for it.This is a sharp departure from his previous statements railing against the Soviet-style subsidies and productions quotas for sugar and dairy farming.Hence, he is caving on one of the few issues for which he has always shown intrepid conviction. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Dallas CAIR Director: "Muslims Are Above the Law of the Land."
I for one welcome this new CAIR policy of honesty and openness. Any day now, maybe one of their directors will admit what they truly stand for.
A Council on American-Islamic Relations leader told a crowd at a rally for Islam that members of the faith should not be bound by American law.
"If we are practicing Muslims, we are above the law of the land," said Mustafa Carroll, executive director of the Dallas-Fort Worth CAIR branch.
The rally in Austin was part of a nationwide effort to hold "Muslim Capitol Day" events. The event included a speech by a representative of Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam, who declared that Texas was an awful place and that Islam was the answer.

WND previously exposed that Gregorian served as a point man in granting $49.2 million in startup capital to an education-reform project founded by former Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers and chaired by Obama.
Documentation shows Gregorian was central in Ayers' recruitment of Obama to serve as the first chairman of the project, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge - a job in which Obama worked closely on a regular basis with Ayers.
Obama also later said his job at the project qualified him to run for public office, as WND previously reported.
Large US Marine force lands in Aqaba to deploy on Jordanian-Syrian border
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 5, 2013
US Marines landing in Aqaba
A large American military force disembarked Tuesday, June 4, at the southern Jordanian port of Aqaba - ready for deployment on the kingdom's Syrian border,DEBKAfile's exclusive military sources report. The force made its way north along the Aqaba-Jerash-Ajilon mountain road bisecting Jordan from south to north, under heavy Jordanian military escort. Our sources disclose that this American force numbers 1,000 troops, the largest to land in Jordan since the Syrian civil war erupted in March 2012. They are members of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Force carried aboard the USS Kearsage amphibious assault ship, which has been anchored off neighboring Israeli Eilat since mid-May. Upon landing, the marines took to the road in a convoy of armored vehicles including Hummers.
Washington and Amman have imposed a blackout on their arrival. The Pentagon has only let it be known that the annual joint US-Jordanian "Eager Lion 2013" military exercise is due to begin later in June and last two months, with the participation of US F-16 fighter jets and Patriot missile defense systems. According to our US sources, the arrival of the US force in Jordan was not directly related to the regular exercise but decided on at an emergency meeting at the Pentagon on May 31, which was attended by top military and civilian Defense Department officials. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who is away from Washington, took part by video conference.
The meeting decided that the military situation evolving in Syria and threats it posed to Jordan - including widening evidence of chemical weapons use in Syria - were urgent enough to warrant the dispatch of extra American military strength to Jordan, over and above the contingents participating in the joint exercise. The Israeli Air Force will provide air cover for the force until the F-16 jets are in place for the drill.
What in the world is China up to? Over the past several years, the Chinese government and large Chinese corporations (which are often at least partially owned by the government) have been systematically buying up businesses, homes, farmland, real estate, infrastructure and natural resources all over America. In some cases, China appears to be attempting to purchase entire communities in one fell swoop. So why is this happening? Is this some form of "economic colonization" that is taking place? Some have speculated that China may be intending to establish "special economic zones" inside the United States modeled after the very successful Chinese city of Shenzhen. Back in the 1970s, Shenzhen was just a very small fishing village, but now it is a sprawling metropolis of over 14 million people. Initially, these "special economic zones" were only established within China, but now the Chinese government has been buying huge tracts of land in foreign countries such as Nigeria and establishing special economic zones in those nations. So could such a thing actually happen in America? Well, according to Dr. Jerome Corsi, a plan being pushed by the Chinese Central Bank would set up "development zones" in the United States that would allow China to "establish Chinese-owned businesses and bring in its citizens to the U.S. to work." Under the plan, some of the $1.17 trillionthat the U.S. owes China would be converted from debt to "equity". As a result, "China would own U.S. businesses, U.S. infrastructure and U.S. high-value land, all with a U.S. government guarantee against loss." Does all of this sound far-fetched? Well, it isn't. In fact, the economic colonization of America is already far more advanced than most Americans would dare to imagine.
So how in the world did we get to this point? A few decades ago, the United States was the unchallenged economic powerhouse of the world and China was essentially a third world country.

Israel is closely monitoring the unrest that continues to rock Syria and is prepared for "every scenario," declared Israel's deputy defense minister, Danny Danon, in a radio interview today.
"We are prepared for every scenario," replied Danon, when asked whether the Israeli home front was ready for the possibility of missiles or chemical attacks emanating from Syria.
Continued Danon: "The home front, unfortunately we have experience with those kinds of attacks, and we are ready for any scenario. And we are following very carefully what is happening today in Syria. We see the instability, and we know that it can spill over into Israel, as well."

The dominant struggle of the 20th Century was the attempt to reconcile the growth of industrial economies with the social welfare demands of the left. The various attempts to "Steal the Thunder" of the left by adopting its social programs led to horrors such as Nazism on the one hand and the growth of the welfare state on the other.
Communism was finally defeated by adopting its program. The national battle against a Russian Communist empire was won while the domestic struggle against the left was lost.
The welfare state created a fifth column of bureaucrats and recipients to act as the left's electorate. Instead of stealing the left's thunder, they subsidized the triumphant long march of the left.
The liberal Republican prescription is still to Outleft the left, adopting some of its more popular ideas and social policies in a more sensible fashion. And they have never understood that the strategy, even when it succeeds in the short term, is doomed. You don't win by making your enemy stronger. The left understands that. That is why it's strategies once in power involve deepening and expanding its institutional power while destroying those of the right.
The temptation to Outleft the left is always there and always doomed because adopting the ideas and positions of the left means that you have already lost.
During the past year, the American public has learned that the Affordable Care Act will not stand good for Barack Obama's promises of lower insurance rates and better healthcare. This being the case, ObamaCare supporters are scrambling to somehow keep the only remaining, empty promise made to gullible constituents; that being that the Act will provide insurance for the majority of the nation's habitually uninsured. It will be the only means left them to declare ObamaCare a "success."
In addition to threatening scofflaws with penalties-that is, TAXES-it had been the intent of ObamaCare's authors to expand coverage throughout the nation by demanding that each state provide Medicaid to Americans up to 138% of the federal poverty level. When the Supreme Court struck down this coercive, unconstitutional scheme, Medicaid expansion programs became optional. The federal government has hoped to entice states into participating by offering to pay 100% of ... Continue Reading:Medicaid expansion scheme won't save ObamaCare from coming PR disaster

That's a lot of security clearances.
"Channelling Joan of Arc with a side of Henry David Thoreau's civil disobedience, Edward Snowden revealed his identity this week as a martyr on behalf of 'an existential threat to democracy.' ... His unlikely career path took him from community college washout to NSA security guard to Central Intelligence Agency IT specialist to consultant with the defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Only in America. Mr. Snowden maintains that he has 'no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong.' He knows that's not true, as his pre-exposure flight from the U.S. reveals. His legal problem is that he accepted a security clearance that makes it a crime to disclose unauthorized national secrets. If he did discover surveillance abuses, he could have gone to the multiple layers of oversight including congressional committees. ... Mr. Snowden seems to understand his legal jeopardy, even if he calls it unjust, because he says he will seek political asylum, perhaps in Iceland. It is certainly instructive that the liberal-libertarian alliance opposing data-mining has adopted as a hero a man who flees to a Special Administrative Region of China to portray America as a totalitarian dystopia. Perhaps he should try his luck with the Communist Party in Guangzhou. ... Though a recently hired consultant, Mr. Snowden evidently had wide access to sensitive documents including Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court rulings. The Government Accountability Office reports that 4.8 million federal employees and contractors hold clearances, without 'clearly defined policy' for determining which positions need them, leading to 'inconsistent and improper' designations. It's also time to heed the warning of the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan that the government keeps far too many secrets. Then perhaps it will be able to do a better job of protecting what really should be secret." --Wall Street Journal
At a fundraising dinner for the Democrats' candidate for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts, Ed Markey, in Washington last night, Vice President Joe Biden voiced his concern about freshman Senators Rand Paul (R-KY) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) (emphasis added):
"Have you ever seen a time when two freshman senators are able to cower the bulk of the Republican Party in the Senate? That is not hyperbole... I called 17 senators out, nine of whom were Republicans. Not one of (them) offered an explanation on the merits of why they couldn't vote for the background check. But almost to a person, they said, 'I don't want to take on Ted Cruz. I don't want to take on Rand Paul. They'll be in my district.'"

Do you get as irritated as I do when you call a company -- your bank, a credit card company, the cable company -- and the first thing you have to do with the robot on the phone is press 1 for English? I don't want to have to press 1 for English in the English speaking United States of America!
But yesterday many people in Virginia probably wished they did have that button to push. In fact, I suspect many would have preferred a "mute" button when Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) went to the Senate floor and delivered his speech in support of the comprehensive immigration reform bill entirely in Spanish.
Kaine no doubt thought he was being really clever. But I am hard pressed to come up with a worse way to support this bill, which I don't. In fact, Kaine's stunt was even at odds with White House rhetoric.
This past weekend President Obama used his weekly radio address to promote the Senate's quasi-amnesty bill, citing among other things the requirement that illegal immigrants must learn English.
Yes, ironically enough, the immigration reform bill has such a provision. But many of us suspect that it will be widely ignored, just as the current English speaking requirement for citizenship is widely ignored. Why else would we be printing voting ballots in foreign languages?
Central to the broader immigration debate is the question of whether America is becoming balkanized. In some parts of the U.S.A. it is possible to grow up, go to school, do business, go home, watch TV and rarely hear English spoken.
Liberal Democrats like Tim Kaine evidently do not see this as a problem. But learning English is a great unifying factor in the process of assimilation -- of making immigrants Americans. And isn't that what we really want -- to welcome those who truly desire to become Americans?
Unfortunately, too many on the left are far more interested in making more Democrat voters whatever the consequences for America. Kaine's pandering was evidence of that sad fact.
Opponents of the immigration bill are probably in a stronger position as a result of Kaine's theatrics on the Senate floor. Eighty-four percent of Americans support making English our official language.
I would urge Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and others who support the bill to go to the Senate floor and make it clear that Kaine's "historic speech" was needlessly divisive and counterproductive, and that it sets a bad example for immigrants seeking to succeed in a country where English is, and must remain, the national language.
About That Bill...
Senate Democrats have claimed all year long that their goal was to draft a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would attract broad, bi-partisan support, even getting 70 votes or more. That was a laudable goal and one that would require a significant amount of Republican support.
But according to Politico, Democrat leaders Harry Reid (D-NV) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) are now abandoning that strategy. Why? Because Reid and Durbin "don't believe they should make major concessions to conservatives -- mainly on issues such as border security."
In other words, when it comes to securing the border and preventing another wave of mass illegal immigration, this is a weak bill. Democrats know it and they are unwilling to fix it.
Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) is warning that the "Gang of 8" amnesty is repeating the same mistakes of the 1986 amnesty bill. Grassley should know. "I voted for it and I acknowledge that what we did in 1986, we got it wrong. We can't afford to make the same mistakes," Grassley said to his Senate colleagues this week. "So don't repeat 1986. See that the borders are absolutely secure -- no excuses on that point, no exceptions on that point."
And on that point the American people are absolutely clear: They want the border secured first. A recent Fox News poll found that 73% of voters want tougher border security measures in place "before other changes to immigration policy go into effect." Even two-thirds of self-identified Democrats supported that position.
But what are the Democrats' priorities? Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, is using the immigration reform bill to promote the radical concept of same-sex "marriage." It is difficult to imagine how such misplaced priorities could attract broad, bi-partisan support in the Senate.
Americans Oppose Government Snooping
CBS released a poll yesterday asking Americans their views on the government's massive data mining and collection efforts. Not surprisingly, the vast majority of Americans (75%) approved of the government collecting phone records of Americans suspected of terrorist activity.
But 58% opposed the mass seizure of phone records related to "ordinary Americans." Just 38% supported that practice. Republicans and independents were strongly opposed (66% and 62% respectively) to the collection of everybody's records, whereas Democrats were evenly divided.
"Tear Down This Wall"
Twenty-six years ago today, President Ronald Reagan delivered one of the defining speeches of his presidency. He traveled to Berlin, Germany, which at that time was divided by one of Soviet Communism's most visibly oppressive symbols -- the Berlin Wall.
Rather than seeking accommodation with the Soviets or rationalizing away the evil that wall represented, Ronald Reagan took a stand for freedom and boldly declared, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
That was the beginning of the end of the "evil empire." Two years later, the Berlin Wall came down, and two years after that the Soviet Union collapsed as well. That is leadership. And the West desperately needs such bold leadership today as it confronts the evil of Islamofascism.

Democrats terrify Hispanics into thinking they'll be lynched if they vote for Republicans, and then turn around and taunt Republicans for not winning a majority of the Hispanic vote.
This line of attack has real resonance with our stupidest Republicans. (Proposed Republican primary targets: Sens. Kelly Ayotte, Jeff Flake, Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio.) Which explains why Republicans are devoting all their energy to slightly increasing their share of the Hispanic vote while alienating everyone else in America.
It must be fun for liberals to manipulate Republicans into focusing on hopeless causes. Why don't Democrats waste their time trying to win the votes of gun owners?
Evertonians Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines are listed among Europe's top 50 players in a ranking by Bloomberg Sports that rates players based on new performance statistics. Fellaini comes in at 12th place; Baines at 16th. Liverpool star Luis Suarez slots in between the two at 15th place. Former Everton players Wayne Rooney and Mikel Arteta are listed at 26th and 46th, respectively.
These rankings are only as good as the underlying performance statistics, about which I'm trying to learn more. But the top 50 list generally passes the straight fact test. For example, the top 10, listed below, all would have made my top 20, and the top 5 all would have made my top 10:
1. Lionel Messi 2. Cristiano Ronaldo 3. Frank Ribery 4. Marco Reus 5. Andrea Pirlo 6. Robin Van Persie 7. Giorgio Chiellini 8. Marek Hansik 9. Gareth Bale 10. Santi Cazorla
There a few oddities. For example, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, for my money the best player in the French League, comes in at only 23th, while Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons is rated 13th. I see Ibrahimovic as top 10 material, while midfielder Gonalons barely makes the top 50 in the French League (goalies excluded) according to ratings by the well-respected magazine France Football.
And while I'm a Arteta fan, I don't think he's Euro top 50 material these days. Nor do I believe that Fellaini quite belongs in the top 20, though he has that much potential.
One more note. 21 of the top 50 players are age 25 or under. This comports with my impression that European soccer is blessed with amazing amount of young stars.
William F. Buckley remarked that he found it impossible to define conservatism in one sentence, but whenever someone insisted that he offer a one-sentence definition he would "punish" them with Richard Weaver's: "Conservatism is the paradigm of essences towards which the phenomenology of the world is in continuing approximation." ("With a straight face," Buckley added.)
This suggests one of the reasons why Weaver has never acquired a wider audience, even among conservative intellectuals. Although this one-sentence definition is intelligible-it could be seen as a fancy version of Horace's dictum that "expel nature with a pitchfork, and it will return"-sometimes Weaver's prose is obscure, tendentious, and hard to follow. But it was remarkably prescient, and it is notable how well it holds up to today's postmodernist obscurantism 65 years after publication. For example, the eighth chapter of Ideas Have Consequences, "The Power of the Word," is a defense of the Aristotelian idea of the intelligibility of reason and language very similar to what I heard from Harry Jaffa, and a refutation of the advanced linguistic philosophies of our time that are indistinguishable from nihilism.
Moreover, here and there Weaver bolts out of the blue with a sparkling aphorism, every bit as usable as "ideas have consequences." Here are a few favorites, perhaps even adaptable for Twitter (which would appall Weaver, Russell Kirk, Eric Voegelin, etc):
The issue ultimately involved is whether there is a source of truth higher than, and independent of, man; and the answer to the question is decisive for one's view of the nature and destiny of man.
Hysterical optimism will prevail until the world again admits the existence of tragedy, and it cannot admit the existence of tragedy until it again distinguishes between good and evil. . . Hysterical optimism as a sin against knowledge.
The typical modern has the look of the hunted.
[I]f we feel that creation does not express purpose, it is impossible to find an authorization for purpose in our own lives.
Thus the specialist stands ever at the borderline of psychosis.
The scientists have given [modern man] the impression that there is nothing he cannot know, and false propagandists have told him that there is nothing he cannot have.
Almost every trend of the day points to an identification of right with the purpose of the state.
The modern state does not comprehend how anyone can be guided by something other than itself. In its eyes pluralism is treason.
No society is healthy which tells its members to take no thought of the morrow because the state underwrites their future.
It will be found that every attack upon religion, or upon characteristic ideas inherited from religion, when its assumptions are laid bare, turns out to be an attack upon mind.
We live in an age that is frightened by the very idea of certitude, and one of its really disturbing outgrowths is the easy divorce between words and the conceptual realities which our minds know they must stand for.
Piety is a discipline of the will through respect. It admits the right to exist of things larger than the ego, of things different from the ego.
Turn where we will, we find that the countryman has a superior philosophic resignation to the order of things.
Thomas Aquinas could do a whole commentary on each one of these aphorisms.
I have written repeatedly about the fact that emphasis on border security, in the context of the Gang of Eight's immigration overhaul, is misguided. The big problem with the bill is that it authorizes somewhere between 30 million and 57 million new legal immigrants, overwhelmingly low-skilled and marginally assimilable. Compared to that reality, the continuation of illegal immigration is relatively insignificant.
Still, it is worth noting that the Gang's bill weakens, rather than strengthens, our ability to deal with future illegal immigration. This is made clear by a letter that Chris Crane, President of the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council (i.e., the ICE union) sent today to John Cornyn and Marco Rubio. Why does the Gang's bill weaken enforcement of our immigration laws? "This is because powerful special interests involved in crafting the bill's language are opposed to interior enforcement-a fact ICE officers are all too familiar with. The political agendas of these groups place the public safety and security of our nation at risk." Here is the letter in its entirety:
June 11, 2013
The Honorable John Cornyn U.S. Senator 517 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510
The Honorable Marco Rubio U.S. Senator 284 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Cornyn and Senator Rubio:
It has come to my attention that you are both working on possible amendments to the Senate immigration bill in an attempt to address growing concerns about the bill's problematic security and enforcement provisions. I am concerned that the public commentary to date regarding your amendments has not included any mention of repairing ICE's dismantled enforcement authorities and practices.
No reforms to S. 744 will be successful unless interior enforcement concerns are addressed and resolved. Any plan is doomed to fail that does not empower ICE agents to enforce the laws enacted by Congress-and that does not put an end to the unlawful abuse of prosecutorial discretion by political appointees.
While there has been much discussion over how S. 744 fails to establish enforcement first and fails to secure the border, less discussed is how it undermines interior enforcement and thus guarantees continuing illegal immigration and visa overstays. Even the complete implementation of a biometric entry/exit system would still result in millions of future visa overstays as ICE lacks not only the resources to enforce immigration laws, but its officers are increasingly prohibited by the Administration from arresting and removing immigration violators-including convicted criminals and aliens incarcerated in jails.
Yet, instead of cracking down on the Administration's abuse of power, S. 744 places unprecedented new restrictions on interior enforcement-making the current situation much worse and much more hazardous. It is as if S. 744 were explicitly written to handcuff law enforcement officials-binding their hands while giving virtually unchecked authority to executive branch officials to prevent future removals, including removals of criminal aliens.
I am eager to discuss with your offices the interior enforcement authorities and resources needed by ICE to ensure a lawful immigration system in the future. Without such reforms, any immigration plan is destined to fail and any proposed amendment to fix the bill is not a fix at all. As the president of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Council noted, "even if you completely rewrote [S. 744] to resolve the many border security concerns and changed the ordering to delay legalization, the legislation would still fail-and would still endanger the public-because of the fatally flawed interior enforcement components."
Specifically, I would encourage you to look at the reform package introduced by Congressman Trey Gowdy in the House Judiciary Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee and, separately, by Congressman John Barrow.
Absent drastic improvements to the interior enforcement provisions, there is no doubt that S. 744 will undermine public safety, officer safety, and the constitutional rule of law, and that it will guarantee future illegal immigration.
Clearly, we will not solve our nation's immigration problems, or fix this bill without empowering ICE agents and restoring and improving ICE's deteriorated enforcement capacity. Approximately 40 percent of all illegal immigrants currently in the United States never crossed the border illegally, but instead entered legally and overstayed their visas. Many dangerous aliens also enter illegally but are never removed because of dismantled ICE enforcement powers. In short, the border is only half the problem.
S. 744 not only fails to contain needed interior enforcement provisions, but weakens interior enforcement. This is because powerful special interests involved in crafting the bill's language are opposed to interior enforcement-a fact ICE officers are all too familiar with. The political agendas of these groups place the public safety and security of our nation at risk. As respected political leaders, I am asking you both to work with me and others in Congress and law enforcement in ensuring that this bill puts the safety of America before powerful special interests. Law enforcement officers are asking for your help.
Andy McCarthy demonstrates Paul's ignorance. He writes:
[T]he bill is unacquainted with the Fourth Amendment - either the one given to us by the Framers or even the one enlarged over time by Supreme Court jurisprudence. . . .Senator Paul's proposed law asserts: "The collection of citizen's [ACM: I take it he means citizens'] phone records is a violation of the natural rights of every man and woman in the United States." A citizen's "natural right" to telephone-usage records that are actually the property of third-party service providers? I wonder what St. Augustine would have made of that.
Not content to contort natural law, Paul then works his magic on positive law. He alleges that collection of records of telephone activity (but not the content of phone conversations) is somehow "a clear violation of the explicit language of the highest law of the land."
By "highest law of the land," Paul is referring to the Constitution's Fourth Amendment. The senator apparently did not read the Fourth Amendment before cutting and pasting it into his bill. It requires (in relevant part) that "the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, shall not be violated."
Perhaps Senator Paul will edify us on how it is "clear" that a phone record, owned and possessed by a telephone service provider (not the customer), qualifies as the person, house, paper, or effect of the customer, such that the government's acquisition of it violates the Fourth Amendment. The federal courts have consistently, emphatically rejected this implausible suggestion, holding that government's collection of phone records does not even implicate the Fourth Amendment, much less violate it.
McCarthy proceeds to explain why "what Paul is advocating is a Constitution even more warped than the 'organic' one progressive jurists have contrived" and why Paul's "proposal bears no resemblance to the Constitution of the Framers."
McCarthy's analysis deserves to be read in full, rather than summarized by me.
Over at InstaPundit, Glenn Reynolds makes a shrewd observation about David Brooks that seems to me worth rescuing from the stream of links. Glenn writes:
WHEN WOMEN COMPLAIN ABOUT THE DISAPPEARANCE OF CHIVALRY, I'm prone to point out that chivalry was a system, one that imposed obligations of behavior on women and girls as well as on men. Likewise, when David Brooks complains that Edward Snowden is an unmediated man, I must note that in the civil society Brooks invokes, Presidents and other leaders were also mediated; they were not merely checked by Congress, courts, etc., but they were also checked by themselves, and a sense of what was proper that went beyond "how much can I get away with now?" Obama, too, is unmediated in that sense. That Brooks couldn't see beyond his sharply-creased pants to notice that when it was apparent to keen observers even before the 2008 election is not to his credit. If the system of civil society has failed, it is in no small part because its guardians - notably including Brooks - have also failed.
Brooks's New York Times op-ed column on Snowden is here. Brook's infatuation with Obama, to which Glenn alludes with respect to Brook's admiration of Obama's "sharply-creased pants," is memorialized in Gabriel Sherman's 2009 New Republic article.

Many Americans are understandably unsettled by news reports about the National Security Agency's widespread monitoring of telephone and Internet traffic. Attracting far less attention is the rampant snooping of a more personalized nature carried out daily by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
The two-year-old agency, created by the Dodd-Frank financial regulation statute, is supposed to keep an eye on banks, mortgage servicers, credit agencies, and the like. But the bureau is also watching consumers very closely, amassing an Orwell-worthy database on all manner of spending, including credit cards, mortgages, auto loans, overdrafts, and payday loans.
Permitting the acquisitions of Sprint by Japan's SoftBank and Smithfield by China's Shuanghui is in America's national interest. Except for narrowly defined security reasons, the default position of the U.S. government should be to keep out of private-sector transactions
The Shuanghui-Smithfield deal is nothing more than one food company purchasing another; there are no national security implications. The appropriate government role is to monitor Smithfield after the acquisition is completed, to ensure the new ownership does not harm the company's ability to meet American health and safety regulations.
The conventional mortgage market has tightened lending standards in the past few years and, consequently, witnessed a decline in delinquency rates with fairly clear lines in credit quality of borrowers and reasonable requirements on borrower collateral (generally a 20 percent down payment to avoid private mortgage insurance) for loan approval.
The Federal Housing Administration (FHA), however, has maintained a weaker book of loans containing a high proportion of borrowers with poor credit quality and low down payment, resulting in higher delinquency rates. The deteriorating financial health of the FHA has loomed behind the scenes until recently.

What's more outrageous than the IRS scandal? Pointing the finger at the victims. That's exactly what Representative Jim McDermott (D-WA) did last week.
Six targeted groups testified before the House Ways and Means Committeee (click for video)to shine light on their interactions with the IRS. In response to testimony that revealed egregious government overreach-demands for confidential donor information, forced disclosure of volunteers who might ever run for political office, leaking of donor details to outside groups with opposing agendas-McDermott decided it was appropriate to indict the witnesses instead:
None of your organizations were kept from organizing or silenced. We are talking about whether or not the American taxpayers would subsidize your work.
Each of your groups is highly political.... From opposing the President's health care reform, to abortion restrictions, to gay marriage, you're all entrenched in some of the most controversial political issues in this country-and with your applications you are asking the American public to pay for that work.
McDermott displays a remarkable misunderstanding of the applicable law. And he did not seem to be listening to the testimony that detailed organizations being intimidated by the IRS scrutiny, losing possible donations, or giving up trying to get qualified entirely. Watch short video of the hearing now >>
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has the authority to grant an exemption from paying taxes under Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code to social welfare organizations that are "primarily engaged in promoting in some way the common good and general welfare of the community."
Because such activity can cross into the realm of politics, the statute grants these organizations discretion to engage in political activity, as long as it is not their "primary" activity.
What other choice do they have, given the enormous influence and control that the powerful federal behemoth has these days over social welfare issues like the President's health care reform, abortion, and same-sex marriage? If an organization is promoting particular public policies, it has no choice but to get involved in the political and legislative arena that dictates policycradle-to-grave on these issues.
McDermott is also wrong in his claim that getting tax-exempt status under 501(c)(4) means taxpayers are subsidizing these organizations. They weren't seeking status as charitable organizations whose donations are tax deductible. The IRS regulates charities under Section 501(c)(3), which is not the focal point of these investigations or the improper IRS targeting.
Uncle Sam had already collected his share of the income that tea party members were using to support their organizations. Why in the world would anyone think that a nonprofit that operates on donations paid by its members should be taxed?
Neither the law nor the facts is on McDermott's side. Let's call what the IRS did what it is: a gross, impermissible overreach of federal authority and partisan misuse of federal power. It's becoming clear that it wasn't conservative groups engaging in blatant political activity-it was the IRS.
Any day now, we will be getting a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court in Fisher v. University of Texas on the constitutionality of the racial preferences practiced by the University of Texas in Austin in its admissions process. Racial discrimination in college admission is morally wrong and a violation of fundamental principles of equal protection, whether it is in favor of certain students or against other students.
The Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation
Founded in 1973, The Heritage Foundation is the nation's most broadly supported public policy organization. Heritage created the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies in 2001 to educate government officials, the media and the public about the Constitution, legal principles and how they affect public policy.
The Senate voted yesterday to move forward on the Gang of Eight's immigration plan-which would grant amnesty to 11 million illegal immigrants.
Insanity is often defined as doing the same thing over and over yet expecting a different result. As Heritage's David Inserra points out, "Instead of new ideas, the current bill is essentially just recycling the flawed and failed ideas of the past."
Remember, once amnesty is granted it can never be taken away. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) took to the Senate floor yesterday to outline several reasons why we may be asking for a mulligan on this amnesty proposal.
With this bill, the American people are being sold a product. They're being asked to accept legalization. And in exchange, they'd be assured through this legislation that the laws are going to be enforced.
But this "product" contains all sorts of hidden agendas and faulty promises, with no guarantees that the promises will come true once the amnesty is in place.
"The Obama Administration has pushed the envelope by waiving welfare laws," Grassley reminded the Senate, so why should we assume the Administration wouldn't do it again? "The reality check for the American people is that there are loopholes and the potential for public benefits to go to those who are legalized under the bill."
The danger of putting too many things in one bill is that you end up having to pass it to see what's in it. But we know one thing: Amnesty for illegal immigrants is the first order of business.
They are getting ready to vote in the Senate. It's been clear from the start that the Gang of Eight bill is Amnesty with no enforcement. But it's far worse. The bill changes our immigration framework to make it virtually impossible to ever enforce the law in the future. I give you my word as an over-30-year veteran of this cause that we face a danger of unimaginable proportions - this bill is a real threat to our national safety and security. Immigration will mushroom - both legal and illegal - and the stability of the American middle class and nation at large will be forever in doubt.
Forget the promises! We heard a lot of these promises in 1986. Promises for:
Border Security
Protection for American workers
Turning off the American job magnet
No future amnesty for Illegal Aliens
All broken. They will be broken again!.
Now this looming disaster of a bill, making all the same promises but doing far more damage, is moving to the full Senate for debate. To stop this bill, we must generate an avalanche - an overwhelming public response - of opposition.
FAIR needs your help right now. Because media coverage is difficult to get today - the many Obama administration scandals and media bias crowd out this vital issue - we must generate public opposition to this amnesty the old fashion way: email, banner ads, phone calls and paid ads.
McConnell, left, and Cornyn are both up for re-election in 2014 and have been taking some of their cues from their states' junior senators.
If there weren't serious political skin in the immigration game, the Senate would not even be debating a framework to overhaul the system this week. But as it stands, senators are set to begin the formal deliberations Tuesday on a bipartisan framework.
And while passing legislation - or failing to do so - could have repercussions for the Republican Party nationally, individual senators of both parties are certain to face ramifications in their home states.
Here is a list of the senators to watch during the immigration proceedings and the political pressures they face back home:
Please call your U.S. Senators toll-free at 888-978-3094 and Urge them to Vote YES on Thune Amendment #1197
This afternoon, Sen. John Thune will be introducing an amendment, number 1197, to the Gang of Eight's amnesty legislation. This amendment would require construction of 50% of the 700 miles of reinforced, double-layered fencing as a trigger to RPI status being granted and the remaining 50% to be completed before RPIs can apply for green cards. The description of a double-layered fence is the definition used in section 102(b)(1)(A) of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.
Please call your U.S. Senators toll-free at 888-978-3094 and urge them to support Sen. Thune's border security amendment, number 1197, to S. 744, the Gang of Eight's amnesty bill.
More information:
Only 36.3 miles of the reinforced, double-layered fencing has been constructed to date. Additional fenci ng and vehicle barriers have been resurrected, but neither of these are sufficient for stopping pedestrian traffic by the definition of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.
This amendment retains the existing triggers in the bill such as the requirement for the Secretary to submit a Southern Border Fencing Strategy. The amendment simply adds an additional trigger that requires the construction of 350 miles of fence prior to RPI status and the construction of the remaining 350 miles of fence prior to adjusting to legal permanent resident status.
The only mention of a border fence in t his bill is a provision requiring the Secretary to identify where fencing, including double-layered fencing, should be deployed along the southern border as part of the Southern Border Fencing Strategy. However, nothing prevents the Secretary from concluding that no additional fencing is necessary, or that vehicle barriers and virtual fencing should be used to complete the 700 miles as required by current law.
The underlying bill authorizes $6.5 billion to carry out its border security provisions, which should more than cover the cost of building a fence (2006 estimates put the cost at a little over $2 billion).
The Secure Fence Act of 2006, which was supported by Sens. Obama, Biden, Clinton and Schumer, also called for the construction of over 700 miles of double-layered reinforced fence, but gave very specific locations where the fencing needed to be implemented. In the 110th Congress, the Omnibus Spending Bill struck the specific locations for the fencing, but it retained the requirement to construct 700 miles of fence.
Fewer Visas or More Surveillance? By Terence P. Jeffrey Supporting revolutions in Middle Eastern countries and tapping directly into Internet servers and phone companies is no substitute for putting jihadis on the no-fly list or denying them visas.
Obama Less Tyrannical Than Bush? L. Brent Bozell III Journalists screamed "dictator" over Bush programs, and then when Obama continued them without interruption, he was just wisely keeping the country safe. As the Obama scandals continue to multiply, it's the media's credibility that should take the hardest hit.
Obama's Definition of "Smarter Enforcement": None By Michelle Malkin Obama and his open-borders pals pay lip service to fairness and the rule of law for the cameras. But behind closed doors and beyond the reach of public accountability, they've already paved the way for mass deportation waivers.
State Department Behaving Undiplomatically By Rich Galen The fact is that all of these alleged misdeeds happened on Hillary Clinton's watch and she probably needs to explain how all this could be going on and who (or how) these investigations got short-stopped.
Glenn unloaded on the 'Gang of 8' immigration reform bill being pushed by the President and many members of both parties. He went so far as to say this bill is even worse than Obamacare. How can anything be worse than what has amounted to a government takeover of healthcare? Glenn explains on radio today.
NYT illegal immigration propaganda
The New York Times showed their hand on the illegal immigration debate by running a propaganda picture on the front page, above the fold. It was a rather implausible picture featuring a young woman on one side of a fence crying as she reaches out to her mom on the other side of the fence. Glenn makes a mockery of the photo.
