The Muslim Student Association and the Boston Terrorist Connection

May 7, 2013 By Daniel Greenfield

undated-photo-of-dzhokhar-tsarnaev-provided-by-vkcomWhile the hunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was still underway, the President of the Muslim Student Association at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth stepped forward to claim that he had tried to get Dzhokhar to join the MSA several times only to be turned down.

"We played soccer together weekly and I knew him fairly well," he said. "If there's one thing I can assure you it's that this kid was NOT a Muslim. He did drugs, he drank alcohol, he didn't want to help us when we were carrying out humanitarian relief efforts... he knew nothing of Islam."

And yet, despite Dzhokhar supposedly not being a Muslim, the MSA president kept trying to get him to join. Even though Dzhokhar Tsarnaev described his worldview as Islam and claimed that he was acting to protect Islam, the MSA president could claim with a straight face that he was not a Muslim.

No one had contacted the Dartmouth MSA for comment, yet the MSA rushed out to get in front of the story by making two claims. The first claim was they had casually known Dzhokhar Tsarnaev from soccer games and the second claim was that he was not an MSA member and had nothing to do with the MSA.

By the time the media got around to interviewing the MSA Secretary, it was more of the same story. He had played soccer with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, had tried to get him to join the MSA and didn't think of him as religious.

The Dartmouth MSA's comments looked very much like damage control.

THE WEEKLY PRESCRIPTION

OBAMACARE'S SECRET PLAN: DESTROY AND 'RESCUE'

Exclusive: Dr. Lee Hieb explains how health bill creates disaster - on purpose

The real name of Obamacare - a name known only to a few policy wonks and politically correct medical students - Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or PPACA. With a name like that, who could object to it? Who would be against "patient protection" or "affordable" when it comes to a government-funded program such as Medicare? Really, who would want "unaffordable," though that's generally what we get in government spending programs? But what does "Affordable Care" really mean?

Although Obamacare is fluid, being rewritten hourly, as of this moment, the plan is to create "accountable care organizations," or ACOs. These will be defined by geographic areas that contain a certain number of patients. Currently, for example, a pilot ACO blankets a large area of northwestern Iowa.

You the patient, at first, won't know that you "belong" to the ACO. But the government has assigned you, if you are a Medicare recipient, to a specific ACO. The ACOs will then be held responsible for quality - as defined by government - and for cost containment.

I recently attended a pie-in-the-sky, rah-rah session given by the CFO of one of the new pilot ACOs. He went into great detail about the good deal awaiting those hospital systems that play the game well. The details, as he admitted, are somewhat lacking, as the rules continue to be written. But I got the big picture. The big picture is: This is a three-step shell game to bring about the death of private practice medicine in America.

Here is how it will work.

Pennsylvanians Against Common Core

Pennsylvania Responds to National Education Standards

Thank you for helping to stop Pennsylvania's implementation of national education standards known as Common Core. Things are moving quickly and gaining speed across the Commonwealth. Just this week, Truth in American Education moved Pennsylvania into their "Rejection Pending" category and revised their map to show us as a state that is "Fighting Back" and that is solely due to your efforts in contacting your legislators.

An important state-wide Common Core townhall meeting will be held this Friday May 10th
which you can watch live streamed.
UNITEPA is hosting Emmett McGroarty of the American Principles Project and Dr. Peg Luksik of Founded on Truth to discuss Common Core at both the national and state levels.

If you are in the Lancaster area and would like to attend this meeting in person see details here, otherwise, click here to register to watch the event online. Once you register, an email will be sent to you two days prior to and again three hours prior to the actual broadcast with this Ustream channel link. Click here for more specific details.

New MUST READING to get you up-to-speed on the details concerning Common Core by Peg Luksik "Assessing the Common Core". It is a bit long, but provides the details you need to get a deeper understanding of this dangerous imposition of the top-down, one-size-fits-all regulations.

Please check out this excellent article written by our friend and western Pennsylvania native Matt Shipley who also served as Assistant Platoon Commander at SEAL Team EIGHT. Read: "Rotten to the Common Core"

  •          ATTENTION!              ATTENTION!                  ATTENTION!
  •          Meeting place for May 10 meeting has changed to PJ Ryans. This is an important meeting to wrap up plans and get going on our agenda for the coming months. Details below.
  •
  •          At the April meeting you did a great job of putting some good ideas out there on priorities and issues.

Some of the top issues that made our list were Voter Fraud, Common Core (education issues), Second Amendment, Right to Work, Agenda 21/smart meters, and 2014 Elections.

In May, let's finish the job.  We'll finalize our issues and set up working groups to get things moving.

It is our belief and the belief of many members that we need to become a more action oriented group. We can discuss ways that we can move in that direction. One of these is our continuing and successful Legislative Visit Program headed up by Camille Heppard and Sonny Hofmann.

Bring your ideas and energy!

In June we plan to try a new meeting place that we think will work well IF we can iron out details. It is convenient and has on-site parking.  You may bring food and drink as long as you clean up after yourselves. The Sr. Center does not serve food although there is a kitchen that we can pay to use. Maybe we'll do a Pot Luck dinner a couple of times a year.

Please stay tuned for additional information as there are still a few details that must be taken care of.

PLEASE PLAN TO COME!  SEE YOU THERE.

 NOTE UPDATED TIME
2nd Amendment Preservation & Gun Control Protest Rally
Saturday May 11 at 1 PM.

This PEACEFUL rally will start promptly at 1 pm on the Pennsylvania  side of "Trenton Makes" Bridge. Please show up by 12:45pm.
As previously noted, the rally will feature prominent speakers such as:

  • Larry Pratt- Gun Owners of America
  • Charles Heller- Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership
  • Tracy Scarpulla- Author of CNN opinion about family responsibility and firearms
  • Sgt. Robert Mansfield- Decorated Iraq War Veteran and Patriot
  • Chief Mark Kessler- Frackville PA and Constitutional Security Force
  • Guest appearance by "The Bearded Flag Guys"
Once our program at the bridge is concluded, PLEASE remain as we will PEACEFULLY protest and be present as the anti-2nd Amendment/ anti-liberty crowd marches over from New Jersey to their event at the nearby Morrisville Willamson Park. We will  PEACEFULLY go over to the anti-2nd Amendment Rally in Willamson Park.  Please note the following about the event at Williamson Park:
  • Firearms are prohibited by Township ordinance.  No concealed or open carry at Willamson Park
  • The anti-guners were very insensitive in holding their event at the same time and place as a major little league event at Williamson Park. It is unfortunate the kids will be distracted in general by their event, and hearing the hysteria and distortions from their speakers and participants.
  • In contrast, our side should be respectful of the kids and the little league event.  We will have positive pro-2nd Amendment/ Pro-family signs for you to use. Or you can bring your own positive message sign.
  • We want to avoid yelling, any combative interaction or creating a scene. The anti-2nd Amendment group will be making enough of a scene with their disruptive presence in front of the little leaguers.
  • There will be law enforcement present. Go out of your way to thank them for their service and emphasize we are on the same side as them.
Directions & Map
Our rally will be held at Bridge Street and Park Ave, on the bank of the Delaware River. Parking is some distance from our rally point, so make allowance for time to park the car and walk to the rally point.

Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday. Bring along friends and family.

Kitchen Table Patriots

Here is our chance to be heard!

Cable provider Comcast is actively supporting Obama's radical leftist agenda to fundamentally transform America.

The news programs at NBC and MSNBC, run by Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, reflect total agreement with the Obama agenda. These "news" organizations even adopted the Obama re-election campaigns "Forward" slogan. Is this what Comcast subscribers and American voters need?

Brian Roberts has close ties to Obama - he was selected to serve on the President's Jobs and Competitiveness Council, he hosted an intimate reception for the President at his vacation home in Martha's Vineyard during last year's election campaign, and he openly supports ObamaCare.

On May 15, Let's show up and protest Comcast at their annual shareholder's meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you've been waiting to tell MSNBC boss Brian Roberts that the government doesn't own your kids, like they claimed in a recent commercial, now is your chance! RSVP here to lend your voice.

When:
May 15 starting at 8:00 AM Eastern

Where:
The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts Perelman Theater
300 S. Broad Street
Philadelphia, PA 19102

RSVP at this link.

Protest outside of the Kimmel Center!
Bring your signs and your voices!
Let Comcast know you are not going to stay silent about their liberal agenda!

Comcast employees contributed nearly $80,000 directly to Obama for America and roughly $200,000 to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint account benefitting both the Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee, through the first half of 2011. President Obama has recently spent time with top Comcast executives, attending an intimate fundraiser at the home of Comcast executive vice president David Cohen in Philadelphia in June and a private "social reception" at the Martha's Vineyard estate of Comcast CEO Brian Roberts earlier this week.

Announcing the 2013 National Conference

& Legislative Briefing!

June 19 - 21 we will convene at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC for our fourth annual National Conference & Legislative Briefing.

And here's some really great news: This year's registration fee is only $229! Register by April 15th and you'll receive our "Early Bird" rate of just $189!

We also offer again this year special benefits for Patriot Eagle and Patriot sponsors.

We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:

  • Steven Emerson - Journalist, author, and the Executive Editor of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. A. M. Rosenthal, late-managing editor of The New York Times, described Emerson as "one of the nation's best national security correspondents."
  • John Guandolo - Former FBI agent and one of America's leading authorities on the Muslim Brotherhood and its inner workings in America. Guandolo spoke at our conference in 2011 and received rave reviews from conference attendees!
  • Ezra Levant - Canadian lawyer, author, newspaper columnist with Sun Media, and former publisher of the Western Standard. Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!

The National Conference & Legislative Briefing will begin on Wed. evening, June 19th, and conclude on Friday, June 21st at noon, with additional optional training sessions Friday afternoon.

It will again feature our very popular Capitol Hill Awards Luncheon and our signature gala banquet-and of course, our Legislative Briefing, where Members of Congress will brief you on various issues and answer your questions.

Go online here to reserve your hotel room at our special discounted rate of $239 per night, or call 800.843.6664.

So make your plans now to join us in our nation's capital for what promises to be our best National Conference & Legislative Briefing ever!

More details to come!

2013 RedState Gathering -- Early Bird Special

Dear RedStater,

We announced earlier this week that we'll be headed to New Orleans the first weekend in August for this year's RedState Gathering. As a member of our RedState family, we'd like to extend exclusive Early Bird registration and pricing to you (just use the promo code EARLYBIRD on the registration page).

The 2013 RedState Gathering will be held August 2-3 at the Westin Canal Place in New Orleans, LA. We'll have two full days of speakers and activities and you can expect a good mix of elected officials and potential candidates for the 2014 cycle (we'll keep you informed as additions are made).

The Gathering has always been a unique event, in that all speakers, even the most in-demand and influential, pay their own way and make their own travel arrangements. This helps keep our costs low, a savings we are happy to pass along to our conference attendees. Additionally, we strive to get you up close to the speakers, ask them to take your questions, and we take care of nearly all your meals during the conference. Bottom line: fewer frills, more thrills and access.

We are thrilled to once again be joined by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who will be hosting a reception for all attendees and appear at the Gathering podium as a keynote speaker. A huge hit in 2012, we're looking forward to Gov. Jindal playing an even larger role this year as he welcomes us to his home state.

Now, more than ever, true conservative activists must come together to exchange ideas and strategize for the future. That's what this year's Gathering is all about. We hope you'll join us.

Click here to learn more and register.

Sincerely,

Erick Erickson
Editor-in-Chief, RedState

P.S. Don't delay! You'll receive 20% off if you register today - just use the promo code EARLYBIRD. Click here.

The 912 Gazette

From a trusted friend:

As some of you may know, I am associated with Coventry Christian Schools as a parent of a graduate (2010) and as member of the Board of Trustees.   Last October we spent a wonderful evening honoring Mark Niehls at our revitalized Founder's Dinner and celebrated our shared heritage in the remarkable community that is Coventry Christian Schools. Our vision for future Founder's Dinners is to inspire and inform not only our alumni and current CCS families but to inspire and inform the Tri-County Area and even our region by hosting speakers and artists who can uniquely assist us in celebrating the heritage, core values, and mission of CCS while also lifting our vision for an even greater future built upon the foundation of our past. The caliber of our speakers and guest artists should provide us with wonderful opportunities to share our CCS story with new partners in Christian education. Proceeds from the dinner will be applied to our annual Coventry Kids Fund for CCS scholarships.

This year we are proud to announce that our distinguished guest and speaker is Dr. Benjamin Carson, and our dinner's theme is "Faith of Our Fathers: The Role of Faith in American Schools." Please join us as we welcome Dr. Carson to the Tri-County Area and celebrate the great things God is doing at CCS!

Dr. Carson is a highly regarded neurosurgeon and motivational speaker who has addressed various audiences across the country. He is one of the most honored and recognized physicians in the world and holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees along with hundreds of awards and citations. He is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He is the author of five books and is the founder of the Carson Scholars Fund. The 2009 award-winning movie entitled Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Carson, premiered on TNT and is based on his memoir. Dr. Carson is an authentic disciple of Christ, has been married to his wife Candy for more than 37 years, and is the father of three sons.

The 2013 Founder's Dinner, which will once again be a part of our Homecoming festivities, will be held at the historic Sunnybrook Ballroom in Pottstown on Sunday, October 13th, 2013. Doors will open at 4:30pm, followed by dinner at 5:15. Dress will be business/professional.    Tickets will be priced at $100 until May 15th, then will be $125, so reserve your tickets for the reduced price.

Due to Dr. Carson's international reputation and recent prominence in the media, including his recent speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, we fully anticipate that this event will sell out quickly once advertised to the public. Tickets go on sale to the public April 15.   If you are interested in attending, tickets can be purchased online.  I will send the link out to those who wish to go on April 15

th

.  While online reservations are preferred because they facilitate efficient event planning, you may also complete a paper order form, which I can forward to you as well.

All of us at Coventry Christian Schools, look forward to sharing this very special evening with you and acquainting you with the school and its mission!

Blessings,

Christine Gordon

Pennsylvanians Against Common Core

Heritage Foundation weighs in on Common Core

By Rachel Sheffield     April 11, 2013:
Policy Analyst, The Heritage Foundation (courtesy of Citizens' Alliance of Pennsylvania)
This coming school year, Pennsylvania public schools will begin implementing the Common Core education standards. Like many other states, Common Core standards are quickly making their way into the classroom. While proponents of the standards continue to champion their predicted benefits, there is significant cause for concern.     First, the standards represent a massive federal overreach. The Obama Administration jumped on board from the get go, promoting national education standards, via policy and federal taxpayer dollars, as part of their education agenda. Billions of federal dollars have gone towards and are continuing to fund, the promotion and implementation of these standards nationwide. The federal government's involvement with the standards should be alarming. Pushing state and local leaders away from classroom curriculum is not only a breach in federalism but gives parents, teachers, and communities less say over what children learn in school.       Education experts have also raised alarm over the quality of the standards. Sandra Stotsky, Professor of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas, has particularly expressed concern over the English Language Arts. Common Core's ELA standards reduce emphasis on literature by promoting the study of "informational texts." Stotsky says

, "A diminished emphasis on literature in the secondary grades makes it unlikely that American students will study a meaningful range of culturally and historically significant literary works before graduation. It also prevents students from acquiring a rich understanding and use of the English language. Perhaps of greatest concern, it may lead to a decreased capacity for analytical thinking."

The whole story on Common Core

Read the sourced and footnoted response to the National Review Online and get all the facts you need to know about Common Core HERE. Compiled by American Principles project and Glenn's research team.

Common Core is the new set of federal education standards being pushed by the Obama administration and several leftist organizations but it's even seeing some support from some conservatives.

defending Common Core, and Glenn gave the definitive response on radio today."Common Core is something that we didn't really get for quite some time and again it's something we've learned from the 9/12 project and concerned parents all around the country that have been bringing this to our attention. When we started in on this work, we thought it was pretty bad. The more we do, the worse it becomes," Glenn said.

Below are some of the points made by the National Review Online in defense of Common Core, followed by Glenn's response.

Indoctrination And Data Mining In Common Core - A Must See

TheBlaze has been at the forefront in uncovering the disturbing details of the nationalized curriculum standard known as Common Core. One of the most troubling aspects of this federal program is that government bureaucrats are currently mining sensitive and highly personal information on children through Common Core's tracking system. Glenn has spent a lot of time over the past few weeks exposing some of the education initiatives in states across the country that are indoctrinating kids into the radical progressive agenda. Today, Glenn discussed an issue tied into Common Core that many people aren't aware of: data mining.

Common Core OK....when they look at you like you have a tin foil hat on your head......take some of this information with you.  It is 126 pages.  I have not read through the entire document (YET) but what I have read is enough to blow off the top of your head.  I have highlighted some stuff.  KIPP (Charter Schools) has a CHARACTER REPORT CARD on Page 39.  So for now start on page 39 and work your way through to page 45.  Remember FERPA laws were changed last year and I am sure not one parent is aware that permission to share information about our children no longer requires parental consent.  Obama just slipped all these new changes in and I don't believe any parents were ever asked their opinions about these changes.  And where was our Republican Congress when this happened???

AGENDA 21 is:  The complete control and inventory of every human activity. After your friends read some of this information ask them if they still believe A21 is not real.  Chapter 36 of A21 document is devoted to education.

Our government forgets there are still people alive that can think and see through their garbage.

Print this document and get a highlighter...........then start visiting your neighbors, school boards, elected officials and start screaming.  GET COMMON CORE AND THE GOVERNMENT out of our class rooms.  I think it is time to start a MASS movement for Home Schooling.  I know Home Schooling will not be spared.  This should be a movement to bring education back to the local level and DESTROY the Federal Department of Education. If our kids are not in school it will create an uprising at all levels.   We should not settle for shutting down Common Core because they will masquerade it....they are already doing this in VA.  VA supposedly never signed on to Common Core but GUESS WHAT........they ARE implementing Common Core and disguising it from the citizens in VA....of course they aren't doing a good job of hiding it and people in VA are catching on.   Our schools have been in the process of a government take over (in earnest) for more than 20 years.  If we don't shut down the Department of Education it will never stop.  We have to cause a citizen uprising!!

News from The Hill:

Sanford pulls off shocking political comeback with win over Colbert Busch
By Cameron Joseph

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) has won his House special election, completing his improbable return to office just years after leaving the public sphere in disgrace with a win over Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch.

The former governor held on for the win in the conservative, Charleston-based district despite an intense focus on his sizable personal baggage and no support from the national party.

TRUE THE VOTE WINS IN SETTLEMENT WITH ST. LUCIE COUNTY FL ELECTIONS SUPERVISOR

Access to all ballots and registration information has been granted to True the Vote for citizen-led audit of the 2012 contest for Florida's 18th Congressional District

HOUSTON, TX. May 7, 2013 True the Vote (TTV), the nation's leading voters' rights organization, today announced its settlement with the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections regarding records inspection rights under federal law and the Florida Constitution. The agreement provides True the Vote access to all ballots, registrations, and other election related data necessary to conduct an audit of a federal election in Florida's 18th congressional district. The audit is unprecedented in that it will be led not by government entities or political parties, but by concerned citizens.

"True the Vote  can now begin reconstruction and review of the 18th Congressional District election race between Colonel Allen West and Patrick Murphy," True the Vote President Catherine Engelbrecht said. "We must stop this scandalous cycle of ignoring failures in our electoral process when the campaigns and cameras go home. Understanding how failures in administration can effect elections, as we saw in St. Lucie County, will help prevent them from occurring in the future. We cannot allow slipshod standards to become pandemic across our country's election processes - citizens can and will stand up in defense of election integrity."

"This settlement grants True the Vote all of the records we originally requested, without any adverse impacts to St. Lucie County taxpayers. The real work toward understanding exactly what happened before, during and after the 2012 18th Congressional District race can finally begin."

A key component to the settlement agreement was to permit access to information dating back to January of 2009. Such information will help evaluate efforts to maintain voter rolls, both before and after federal election cycles.

"Since 2009 to present, Washington has made clear that it doesn't have any interest in seeing that voter rolls are maintained - we must fully study how that can affect a close congressional race," True the Vote attorney J. Christian Adams said. "This case is unique because it was directly impacted by the Holder Justice Department's attempt to block the State of Florida's efforts to remove ineligible persons from the voter rolls ahead of the 2012 General Election. This settlement will lead my client to answers, finally."

The agreement between True the Vote and St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker allows for sharing of records that pertain directly to the 2012 contest, in addition to election administration files dating back to January 2009. An abbreviated list of records includes:

  • 2012 voter credit documents;
  • completed voter registration forms;
  • copies of all regular and provisional ballots cast (including provisional notices);
  • documents pertaining to federal list maintenance requirements since 2009 (including felon and non-citizen records);
  • all documentation for those trained as poll and tabulation workers for the 2012 contest.

The settlement came as a result of a lawsuit after requests to inspect election records were not immediately addressed (True the Vote, Inc. v. Gertrude Walker in her official capacity as St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections, Civil Action (No 2:13cv14046.)). TTV chose to perform a comprehensive audit of the 2012 election and subsequent recount between incumbent Allen West andPatrick Murphy after reports of errors and inaccurate tabulations were admitted to.

True the Vote originally filed its complaint in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida - Fort Pierce Division.

RedState Morning Briefing

RedState Morning Briefing

For May 8, 2013

A special good morning to my liberal friends who thought they might win in SC-01, but lost.  Now, I know you are in high dudgeons today about the GOP and family values and Mark Sanford.  But let's just start with a reality check - Mark Sanford may have cheated on his wife, but your hero Teddy Kennedy killed a lady.  Good morning!

1.  Mark Sanford Wins

Mark Sanford wins again. I guess the Democrats will blame Busch.

Already they claim the GOP, as the party of "family values", is hypocritical for voting for Mark Sanford. The party of Bill Clinton and Kermit Gosnell could, of course, never be accused of supporting family values. More over, many of the very same Democrats claiming Sanford's win is a loss for women will be out next year opposing Nikki Haley's re-election.

The fact is neither side should read more into this election that there was. Elizabeth Colbert-Busch was a terrible candidate, horrible at retail politics. Mark Sanford thrives on retail politics. Lastly, and most importantly, the district was drawn to be a Republican district, though had Colbert-Busch been a better retail politician, she would have done much better.

On election day, Sanford had ten events in addition to voting. Elizabeth Colbert-Busch voted and disappeared.

Honestly, in a nut shell, despite what you may hear in the media, there are still places in America that hate liberals and would rather a deeply flawed Mark Sanford than an elitist liberal. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

2.  Egregious Ads and Polls from Mark Zuckerberg's Front Group

Imagine the biggest conservative donors in America banding together to form a group, "Progressives for Retirement Security," for the purpose of promoting private retirement accounts.  Imagine that group running ads starring Chuck Schumer promoting private Social Security accounts as examples of bold progressive reform.

Don't worry, hell will freeze over from global warming before that happens. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

3.  Millionaire Union Boss Compares Ohioans to Nazis

Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) Executive Director Joe Rugola, who last week compared supporters of workplace freedom to Nazis, was paid $253,351 in member dues during the union's most recent fiscal year.

At a May 1 press conference, Rugola decried workplace freedom as "extreme." Asked by reporters why 24 states already have workplace freedom laws on the books if the policy is extreme, Rugola said, "all of Germany went extreme in 1933 ... that doesn't make it wise." . . . please click here for the rest of the post

4.  Taxation without representation, online edition

The Senate passed the Marketplace Fairness Act by a 69-27 vote on Monday, bringing us one step closer to state taxes on Internet commerce.  The House has its own version of the bill, so there's a pretty good chance it will reach the President's desk, and of course you had Barack Obama at "new tax."  It will be a wonder if he can keep from trembling visibly with excitement when he signs the law.  Republicans, on the other hand, might have a spot of trouble explaining their enthusiasm for a new tax to constituents.

Thus passes the concept of resistance to "taxation without representation," which was a really big deal in the early days of American independence.  Web companies will soon be audited by thousands of state and local authorities in which they have absolutely no political representation, and from whose governments they receive no direct services.  The requirement for a taxation "nexus" - the ownership of property in the state levying sales taxes - was not some weird, arbitrary legalism.  It was based on a principle held very dear by the Founders.  Then again, so were all the other rights that have lately been treated like arbitrary legalisms, such as the right to refuse to pay for other peoples' birth control, the right not to buy products from officially favored insurance providers, and the right to keep and bear arms.  . . . please click here for the rest of the post

5.  The Debt Ceiling is all About Obamacare

There is nothing more odious in a free society than politicians using the boot of government to make the most basic goods and services unaffordable for the majority of the country, thereby engendering a need for subsidization.  In one fell swoop, representatives who deviate from the Constitution have the ability to destroy the self-respect and quality of life for all but the top 1% - the very people who are reviled by these same politicians.

This is exactly what is transpiring with Obamacare implementation.  That is exactly why Republicans must use the debt ceiling to kill Obamacare while it is extremely unpopular and before its immutable dependency takes effect.

I am one of those people who buy private health insurance and am hurt by the government's tendentious tax treatment of employer-based insurance.  I am also unlucky enough to live in Maryland, where health premiums are slated to increase as much as 150% after Obamacare is implemented.  Other people who get their insurance from employers are being laid off as a result of the ubiquitous company splits in preparation from the employer mandate.  Still others are being cut back to part time employment.

This is one of those moments where the American people expect Republicans in Washington to lay down in front of the metaphorical Obamacare tanks and stop this assault on freedom.  . . . please click here for the rest of the post

Latest on Benghazi

The last few days we've seen a series of explosive reports on what really happened in Benghazi.

Even the "establishment media," most of whom ignored the issue last fall, are now being forced to cover it. For example, see The Washington Post story below (highlights added).

You helped play a part in keeping the Benghazi investigation alive. The grassroots efforts of ACT! for America helped generate strong support for Congressman Frank Wolf's resolution calling for a special, select committee to investigate what happened.

As The Hill reported on April 17th, House Speaker John Boehner was forced to more directly address the Benghazi issue, due to the growing support for the select committee.

Many in the media, and of course many Obama supporters, have argued it's time to move beyond Benghazi. Hillary Clinton and John Kerry have both said as much.

We disagree.

As we've said before, it's past time Americans knew the truth. Our national security and the families of the four dead men deserve no less.

Special Ops halted from responding to Benghazi attacks, U.S. diplomat says

By Ernesto Londoño,

May 06, 2013 09:39 PM EDT

The Washington Post Published: May 6

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/special-ops-halted-from-responding-to-benghazi-attacks-us-diplomat-says/2013/05/06/c3f311d4-b677-11e2-aa9e-a02b765ff0ea_story.html

As the weakly protected U.S. diplomatic compound in eastern Libya came under attack the night of Sept. 11, 2012, the deputy head of the embassy in Tripoli 600 miles away sought in vain to get the Pentagon to scramble fighter jets over Benghazi in a show of force that he said might have averted a second attack on a nearby CIA complex.

Hours later, according to excerpts of the account by the U.S. diplomat, Gregory Hicks, American officials in the Libyan capital sought permission to deploy four U.S. Special Operations troops to Benghazi aboard a Libyan military aircraft early the next morning. The troops were told to stand down.

Video

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., discusses new details about the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

Defense Department officials have said they had no units that could have responded in time to counter the attack in Benghazi, but Republicans on Capitol Hill have questioned whether the Obama administration could have saved lives with a nimbler, more assertive response. They say that the reluctance to send the Special Operations troops may have, at the very least, deprived wounded Americans in Benghazi of first aid.

Congressional investigators released a partial transcript of Hicks's testimony Monday ahead of a hearing Wednesday at which he is scheduled to appear. His remarks are the first public account from a U.S. official who was in Libya at the time of the attacks about the options that were weighed as militants mobbed the American diplomatic outpost and CIA station in Benghazi, killing U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other government employees.

The new details are certain to reignite a debate over whether the Obama administration has been sufficiently forthcoming in its public accounting of the events and missteps that resulted in the first death of a U.S. ambassador in the line of duty in a generation. If Republicans in Congress succeed in portraying the administration's response as feckless, the episode could dog any future political aspirations of Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was secretary of state when the attacks happened.

After the attacks ended without planes being scrambled or special forces dispatched, the lieutenant colonel in Tripoli who commanded the Special Operations team told Hicks he was sorry that his men had been held back.

"I've never been so embarrassed in my life that a State Department officer has bigger balls than someone in the military," the officer told Hicks, according to the diplomat's account. Hicks called that "a nice compliment."

Hicks may have been the last American official to speak with Stevens. After an embassy security official ran into his residence to tell him about the initial attack, Hicks managed to get Stevens on the phone. "Greg, we're under attack," Stevens blurted out, according to Hicks. "My response is 'Okay,' and I'm about to say something else and the line clicks."

The administration has said the independent review of the Benghazi assault was exhaustive, and State Department officials have vowed to implement reforms to make U.S. missions abroad safer. Republicans, however, say Hicks's account suggests the administration has not been entirely truthful.

Campaign for Working Families

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

To: Friends & Supporters

From: Gary L. Bauer

Barack & Benghazi

There is an odd coincidence in American politics -- presidential second terms often seem cursed. For Ronald Reagan it was the Iran/Contra scandal. For Bill Clinton it was Monica Lewinsky and impeachment. For George W. Bush it was the financial collapse. For Barack Obama it could well be Benghazi.

Whistle-blowers are scheduled to testify before Congress tomorrow. We hope that this cover-up, which began more than six months ago, will be fully exposed and that those responsible will be held accountable. The families of four dead, brave Americans deserve at least that.

Exposing corruption and demanding honesty from our leaders is what a real opposition party and a free press are supposed to do. Amazingly, the New York Times continues to ignore Benghazi, refusing even to report the fact that blockbuster hearings are taking place tomorrow.

On the eve of the hearings, I want to remind you of what was happening in the days leading up to the attacks and immediately following.

The attacks on the Benghazi consulate took place on the anniversary of 9/11 -- September 11, 2012. Seven days prior, Democrats gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina, for their national convention.

At that convention, Obama "spiked the ball in the end zone" -- reminding everyone listening that he had taken out Osama bin Laden. (You would have thought that he had personally escorted the Seal Team on its mission.)

But more importantly, Obama claimed Al Qaeda was on the ropes -- "defeated" or "decimated" as we were told over and over again. It was the theme of virtually every speech in Charlotte. Joe Biden hammered it home with his line, "Osama bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive." That was all voters needed to know, according to Biden, to reelect Obama.

But just one week later that theme was in jeopardy as riots engulfed many Muslim capitals in the Middle East, allegedly in reaction to an anti-Islam movie trailer. The U.S. embassy in Cairo was assaulted. Egyptians stormed the walls and raised the black flag of the "dead" Al Qaeda movement. Then came the military-style attack on our consulate in Benghazi, an attack that lasted at least seven hours.

What happened next was a significant moment. On the anniversary of 9/11, as Islamist rioters surrounded the walls, embassy officials in Cairo released a statement condemning the American filmmakers for exercising their free speech rights rather than condemning Islamic extremism for the violence. Mitt Romney held a press conference criticizing the statement, citing it as an example of the administration's weakness.

Big Media, heavily vested in Obama's reelection, launched a full-throated assault, not on Obama, Biden and Clinton for their false bragging a week earlier, but on Mitt Romney! The line out of Washington was, "Mitt Romney doesn't have the demeanor and wisdom to be Commander-in-Chief. Now people are dead!"

Think about that for a second. You've got to tip your hat to the naked shamelessness of the president, the secretary of state and others involved. They knew that Islamists had caused the attacks. They knew they refused to send help.

And what did they do? What leftists always do: Faced with huge exposure and tremendous vulnerability, they went on offense. They successfully turned the events to their advantage, damaging Mitt Romney in the process. And the sympathetic media fully cooperated. In politics and in war the best defense is often a good offense.

Meanwhile, as all of this is unfolding, we now know that the CIA had provided talking points blaming Islamists. But a top career official at the State Department, Victoria Nuland, sees a watered-down draft of the talking points and still insists that they failed to "resolve all my issues or those of my building [the State Department] leadership." Translation: Hillary Clinton is upset.

Just imagine being president of the United States or secretary of state and, while America doesn't know yet and the media show no interest in knowing, you know exactly what you did and did not do on the night four Americans died. So what do you do? If you are Barack Obama, you head to Las Vegas for a fundraiser the next day.

Three days later, on September 14th, Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton welcome home the caskets carrying the bodies of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Tyrone Woods, Sean Smith and Glen Doherty. Family members of the dead Americans asked, "What happened? Why is our son dead? Who did this?"

Obama and Hillary looked Patricia Smith in the eye and promised to get to the bottom of it. But they already knew what happened. They scrubbed the talking points to make sure the family members did not know the truth, that members of Congress did not know the truth, that American voters did not know the truth.

Two weeks later, the FBI had not arrived in Benghazi to investigate. Why not? One of the whistle-blowers who will testify tomorrow believes that it was the result of fallout and bad relations with the Libyan government.

The president of Libya was reportedly furious with U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's false statements to the Sunday talk shows denying that there was any connection between the attacks and Al Qaeda. He called Rice's remarks, "completely unfounded and preposterous." So when Obama sent the FBI, they parked in Tripoli for two weeks. News organizations were in Benghazi before the FBI got there.

From that point on, anytime Obama or Clinton were confronted by Romney or any reporter about whether Benghazi was handled correctly, they wrapped themselves in the burial shrouds of the men who died. "I stood next to President Obama as the Marines carried those flag-draped caskets off the plane at Andrews," Clinton said.

The whole time she and Obama knew they had abandoned their fellow Americans to fend for themselves. Chutzpah does not even begin to describe it!

In conclusion, this sorry chapter in American history demonstrates in so many ways all the problems that bedevil America's current debate and political process. Today's media are unwilling to do their job and are too often partisan players in the political process.

Today's Democratic Party is not the party of JFK, FDR and Harry Truman -- men who took responsibility for their actions and confronted tyranny. Instead it produces leaders whose first instinct when faced with terrorism is to tell the American people to pipe down. The left does have a "killer instinct," but only when "the enemy" is conservatives.

Against this formidable force is a Republican Party whose most recent presidential nominees were not tough enough to deal with people like Obama or Clinton or the liberal press corps. As a result, Mitt Romney is a private citizen while Barack Obama has three and half years to do even more damage to America.

The Burglar-Terrorist Alliance

(The following is an adaptation of a talk that I recently gave.)

Every act of violence has two sides. The side of those who carry it and the side of those who let it happen. When a burglar breaks into a home and kills two people, we don't just discuss what made him do it, but why it was allowed to happen.

That's a conversation we rarely have about terrorism. The left wants us to talk about terrorism as a reaction to something that we as a society or a nation did. It doesn't want to talk about how it smoothes the way for terrorists to do what they do.

The left has a long history of being soft on crime and empowering criminals because it rejects the idea that society is good and criminals are bad. Instead it flips the equation around. Criminals are good because society is bad.

The man with a house full of stuff is bad for keeping it from the burglar who just wants to have some of the good life.

Now America is bad. It's bad for wanting to have the good life. It's bad for wanting to protect its own people. It's privileged. And to the left, privileged is the dirtiest word it can think of. The left will put on NEA sponsored plays full of every possible obscenity, but privilege is what it considers a really dirty word.

The left doesn't accept the basic parameters of our society. It doesn't accept that if you buy a house, it's yours. It doesn't accept that if you work 100 hours for 10 dollars an hour that you're entitled to a thousand dollars. It doesn't believe that you built anything.

And so it doesn't accept the idea that stealing or killing is wrong.

Morning Jolt

. . . with Jim Geraghty

May 7, 2013

Happy Election Day, South Carolina's first district.

The Powers That Be at NR will be doing some marketing for the Morning Jolt in the near future, and we're collecting kind words from readers, including, hopefully, some big names. If you're one of those big names, and wouldn't mind your blurb-like praise being cited in an NRO ad - "I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats!" - then feel free to send it along. If you're not one of those big names, well, you can still praise the Jolt and it will be good for my ego; it just may or may not be quoted in any marketing materials.

The Benghazi Hearings: This May Be the Week That Defines Obama's Second Term

Dear Republicans on the House Oversight Committee:

Please do not grandstand. Please do not take the time before the television cameras to tell us how outraged you are, even though what you are investigating is, indeed, outrageous. There will be plenty of time for that after the hearing. All day Wednesday, give us the facts, and then more facts, and then more facts.

Just ask the questions of the witnesses. Let them speak and don't cut them off. Do not give the Obama administration any cover to claim that this is a partisan witch hunt from unhinged political opponents. Don't waste time complaining about the media's lack of interest or coverage so far. Just give them - and us - the facts to tell the story, a story that will leave all of us demanding accountability.

Sheryl Attkisson's excellent reporting for CBS gives us a sense of what to expect, with three big issues.

First: Leading up to September 11, why did State Department's keep reducing the amount of security protecting diplomatic staff in Libya, in light of the increasingly dire requests from those in country?

The former deputy chief of mission for the U.S. in Libya, Gregory Hicks, was interviewed by congressional investigators on the House Oversight Committee in April. He told them, "we had already essentially stripped ourselves of our security presence, or our security capability to the bare minimum."

Second: Precisely what happened that night? Was there a time when a rescue could have been authorized, but wasn't? Were any forces told to "stand down" and not attempt a rescue?

From Hicks' interview:

A: So Lieutenant Colonel Gibson, who is the SOCAFRICA commander, his team, you know, they were on their way to the vehicles to go to the airport to get on the C-130 when he got a phone call from SOCAFRICA which said, you can't go now, you don't have authority to go now. And so they missed the flight. And, of course, this meant that one of the . . .

Q : They didn't miss the flight. They were told not to board the flight.

A: They were told not to board the flight, so they missed it. So, anyway, and yeah. I still remember Colonel Gibson, he said, "I have never been so embarrassed in my life that a State Department officer has bigger balls than somebody in the military." A nice compliment.

Wait, there's more from another witness:

On the night of Sept. 11, as the Obama administration scrambled to respond to the Benghazi terror attacks, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a key aide effectively tried to cut the department's own counterterrorism bureau out of the chain of reporting and decision-making, according to a "whistle-blower" witness from that bureau who will soon testify to the charge before Congress, Fox News has learned.

That witness is Mark I. Thompson, a former Marine and now the deputy coordinator for operations in the agency's counterterrorism bureau. Sources tell Fox News Thompson will level the allegation against Clinton during testimony on Wednesday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

Third: What happened afterward, and was there an effort to lie to the American people about what happened?

Hicks, again:

Greg Hicks: The net impact of what has transpired is the spokesperson of the most powerful country in the world has basically said that the President of Libya is either a liar or doesn't know what he's talking about. The impact of that is immeasurable. Magariaf has just lost face in front of not only his own people, but the world... my jaw hit the floor as I watched this... I've never been as embarrassed in my life, in my career as on that day... I never reported a demonstration; I reported an attack on the consulate. Chris's last report, if you want to say his final report, is, "Greg, we are under attack." ... It is jaw-dropping that - to me that - how that came to be.

Finally, did the previous efforts to investigate this amount to a cover-up? Jed Babbin:

Last week, we learned that the State Department's Inspector General is investigating the Pickering-Mullen "Accountability Review Board" for, among other things, its failure to investigate and get statements from the Benghazi survivors. Before there were whistleblowers there were survivors, yet the comprehensively misnamed "Accountability Review Board" didn't question them.

Which isn't a surprise. The ARB did what it was paid to do: limit the damage and blame people under Hillary Clinton for the failures of leadership and management. It was, simply, a whitewash. We'll probably wait a long time for the IG to report the facts - 2017 sounds like the right time frame.

In the press conference announcing the report, Adm. Mullen said something that's been bothering me ever since. He said that no military assets could have been deployed in time. In time to do what?

Jed makes a good point here: Just how did the U.S. military and diplomatic folks outside of Benghazi know how long they had to rescue anyone? How did they know how long our guys would be able to hold out, or how long the attack would go on? After the fact, you can calculate that not enough forces could have reached the site in time, but how did they know that as the events were ongoing?

If that means, in Clintonian terms, that they wouldn't have been in time to save Ambassador Chris Stevens, that doesn't mean that they wouldn't have been in time to save the SEALs.

If you parse Mullen's words - as we learned we must when Hillary's hubby was president - he almost certainly meant that the ambassador was killed in the early moments of the attack.

In short, what we don't need is a bold, expectation-setting, agenda-hinting prediction like this:

Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said on his radio show Monday that President Obama "will not fill out his full term" because he was complicit in a "cover-up" surrounding the attack that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Libya.

"I believe that before it's all over, this president will not fill out his full term," Huckabee said. "I know that puts me on a limb, but this is not minor."

Will Democrats Talk Themselves Into Believing Losing Is Winning in South Carolina?

Okay, who got to Chris Cillizza?

Losing a potentially winnable seat in a special election might wind up helping Democrats nationally more than emerging victorious would.

Here's why.

Sanford is damaged goods, politically speaking, thanks to his acknowledgment in 2009 that he had disappeared from the state to visit his mistress in Argentina as well as more recent revelations that he had trespassed in his ex-wife's house in order to watch the Super Bowl with one of his four sons.

And it's not just in South Carolina where people know about Sanford and his transgressions over the past four years. His initial defense of his 2009 absence - Sanford told staff he was "hiking the Appalachian Trail" (thereby ruining any actual hiking trips for married men everywhere) - became a national story and made the then-governor a punchline for late-night comedians.

A Sanford victory puts that guy in the House Republican Conference. That means that not only do the late-night jokes start again but, more importantly, every GOPer in the House and Senate will be asked whether they support Sanford and what they think of serving with him.

"The late-night jokes start again" . . . So what? Part of being a Republican in this world is knowing that you and your party will have (often very lame) jokes told about you on late-night shows.  Are we to believe the GOP should hope to lose this seat so that they won't endure Jay Leno telling some Sanford jokes that most of his California low-information-voter studio audience won't understand? (Have you noticed this phenomenon? I don't watch his monologue all that often, but when I do, I've noticed most of Leno's politics-related jokes bomb. It's as if the spectacularly uninformed L.A. airheads who used to be featured in his "Jaywalking" segments are now the majority of his studio audience.)

"Every [Republican] in the House and Senate will be asked whether they support Sanford" . . . support him in what? This special House election is not a referendum on Argentinean mistresses. (Why do I have a feeling I've just steered some search engine traffic my way by using that phrase?) Sanford is not running on a platform that what he did in 2009 is a good thing deserving of endorsement; he's running on a whole host of economic, foreign-policy, and social issues.  Here, take a look.

If Sanford arrives in Congress and then suddenly misses votes and committee hearings because he's disappeared again, well . . . then yes, there will be heck to pay. But if that happens, it will get addressed in the June 2014 primaries.

Cillizza looks at the outlook in 2014 and concludes, "Colbert Busch would be renting the seat for 19 months - and the rent would be VERY high."

Yes, but today some portion of the 179,908 or so Republicans in the district who voted for Tim Scott can go to the polls and make all of that Democratic spending for nothing:

Through April 17, Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, had raised almost $1.2 million, while Sanford had raised just $787,000. But Colbert Busch had spent more, leaving her $254,000 in cash on hand, while Sanford had $284,000. OpenSecrets.org has unveiled profiles for all of the upcoming special elections, including the one in South Carolina's First District.

Besides raising far less money than Colbert-Busch, Sanford is taking a huge hit when it comes to outside spending. According to OpenSecrets.org's profile of the race, outside groups have spent more than $929,000 on independent expenditures against Sanford. Conservative groups have spent only about $15,000 to help him. Meanwhile only about $4,600 has been spent by outside groups attacking Colbert Busch, while $1,500 has been spent supporting her.

Pritzker's Bank Failure: Investors Got Paid, Depositors and Taxpayers Fleeced

by Rebel Pundit

By her own admission in a 2008 Q & A with the New York Times, Secretary of Commerce nominee Penny Pritzker acknowledged as many as 1600 depositors lost $6000 on average--or roughly $10 million overall--due to her family's Superior Bank failure. The losses were the result of years of subprime lending and overvaluing its residual interests after failing to discount to present values, future cash flows that were subject to credit losses.

According to the U.S. General Accounting Office:

Superior Bank did not properly value the residual interest assets it reported on its financial statements. Since those assets represented payments that were to be received in the future only after credit losses were reimbursed, they needed to be discounted at an appropriate risk adjusted rate, in order to recognize that a promise to pay in the future was worth less than a current payment...

Don't investigate Barack unless you can pay the tab

May 07, 2013 06:13 am | Coach Collins

by George Spelvin, staff writer

The social security number 042-68-4425 bearing the name Barack Obama has failed the United States' Social Security Number verification check. "I was outraged; nobody vetted this man," said Seattle housewife Linda Jordon who filed a self-check investigation listing herself as Obama's employer (as a U.S. taxpayer). Jordon exposed the absurdity of a man who has access to the code for America's nuclear football, but couldn't get clearance to pick tomatoes because his social security number has been flagged and kicked back! For her diligent efforts as a concerned American citizen, Jordon is being slammed with over $13,000 in fees and court costs because a judge deemed her investigation of the anomalies surrounding Obama's social security number "frivolous." "I'm a mom, wife, homemaker," says Jordon who compared the 1 1/2 year vetting process her son had to go through to become a deputy sheriff with the lack of investigation ... New Sears CEO Thinks "America is Overregulated"
From the National Center for Public Policy Research

Hoffman Estates, IL/Washington, DC - New Sears CEO Edward Lampert seemed stunned when questioned about Sears' leading role in the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), a trade association that is promoting mandatory "sustainability" standards for its members.

Yesterday, at the annual meeting of Sears shareholders in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Horace Cooper of the National Center for Public Policy Research asked Mr. Lampert where Sears' management stands on the question of its trade association imposing sustainability standards on its members, including Sears.

Cooper asked, in part, "Does management support the idea of RILA imposing sustainability standards on its members, or is it opposing mandatory sustainability standards and standing up for the right of each retailer to make its own decisions regarding the best way for each individual retailer to lawfully satisfy the needs of its customers?"

Lampert did not answer the question directly, but seemed unequivocally opposed to mandatory standards, saying that customers ought to be the driving force behind any standards, and that America needs to be a voluntary society. [Read the full article]

Report: There Are No Jobs Americans Won't Do
From the Center for Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON, DC (May 2, 2013) - Supporters of the Schumer-Rubio amnesty argue that the bill's large increase in future legal immigration will have little impact on the employment of natives because immigrants do only jobs American's don't want. But a detailed analysis of 472 separate occupations by the Center for Immigration Studies shows there are only a tiny number of majority-immigrant occupations (legal and illegal immigrants combined). Thus, there are really no jobs that Americans won't do. Further, the Center found no occupations in which a majority of workers are illegal immigrants.

Co-author Steven Camarota, the Center's Director of Research, notes, "When more educated and affluent Americans argue that immigrants only do jobs Americans don't want, what they often mean is immigrants do jobs that they personally don't want. They forget the millions of their fellow Americans who do precisely these same jobs."

The millions of native-born Americans and legal immigrants already in the United States who work at low-paying and difficult jobs unfortunately do not seem to be represented in the legislation, which calls for a massive increase in immigration. The Schumer-Rubio bill creates a new guestworker program for less-skilled immigrants, it increases family immigration for a number of years, a large share of which is less-skilled, and creates new categories to admit additional less-educated workers.

The complete report can be viewed at: http://cis.org/are-there-really-jobs-americans-wont-do. Among the findings:
Of the 472 civilian occupations, only six are majority immigrant (legal and illegal). These six occupations account for 1 percent of the total U.S. workforce. Moreover, native-born Americans still comprise 46 percent of workers even in these occupations.

Many jobs often thought to be overwhelmingly immigrant (legal and illegal) are in fact majority native-born:

- Maids and housekeepers: 51 percent native-born
- Taxi drivers and chauffeurs: 58 percent native-born
- Butchers and meat processors: 63 percent native-born
- Grounds maintenance workers: 64 percent native-born
- Construction laborers: 66 percent native-born
- Porters, bellhops, and concierges: 72 percent native-born
- Janitors: 73 percent native-born

There are 67 occupations in which 25 percent or more of workers are immigrants (legal and illegal). In these high-immigrant occupations, there are still 16.5 million natives - accounting for one out of eight natives in the labor force.

High-immigrant occupations (25 percent or more immigrant) are primarily, but not exclusively, lower-wage jobs that require relatively little formal education.

In high-immigrant occupations, 59 percent of the natives have no education beyond high school, compared to 31 percent of the rest of the labor force.

Natives tend to have high unemployment in high-immigrant occupations, averaging 14 percent during the 2009-2011 period, compared to 8 percent in the rest of the labor market. There were a total of 2.6 million unemployed native-born Americans in high-immigrant occupations.

Some may think that native-born workers in high-immigrant occupations are mostly older, with few young natives willing to do such work. But 34 percent of natives in these occupations are age 30 or younger, compared to 27 percent of natives in the rest of labor force.

It is worth remembering that not all high-immigrant occupations are lower skilled. For example, 36 percent of software engineers are immigrants, as are 27 percent of physicians.

A number of politically important groups tend to face very little job competition from immigrants (legal and illegal). For example, just 10 percent of reporters are immigrants, as are only 6 percent of lawyers and judges and 6 percent of farmers and ranchers.

We find that there are no occupations in the United States in which a majority of workers are illegal immigrants.

Illegal immigrants work mostly in construction, cleaning, maintenance, food service, garment manufacturing, and agricultural occupations. However, the overwhelming majority of workers even in these areas are native-born or legal immigrants.

Although illegal immigrants comprise a large share of workers in agriculture, farm workers are only a tiny share of the total labor force. Consistent with other research, just 5 percent of all illegal immigrants work in agriculture.

The 2013 CSPOA Convention: Heartland of America
May 31 through June 1, St. Charles, Missouri

Come see Tom DeWeese and Michael Coffman at this year's CSPOA Convention

You may be surprised to know that there are good, courageous men and women all around you who still believe in old-fashioned values like Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. There are still many of us who understand that your right to life is meaningless without the liberty to defend that life, the lives of your family, and your property.

At our convention you will hear presentations from county sheriffs, constitutional scholars and legal professionals from across the nation who have come together to tell us that it is NOT too late and there IS still hope. Those attending will see proof positive that state sovereignty and local autonomy are the SOLUTIONS. When local law enforcement is truly committed to serving the people and protecting their rights, it works! You will leave the convention with this evidence and a new commitment to American ideals!

This year, Sheriff David Clarke of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin will be present to receive the CSPOA Sheriff of the Year award. Meet him in person!

Also meet Police Chief Mark Kessler of Gilberton Borough Police Department in Pennsylvania, who will be one of our speakers!

And here's the best part: Registration for this convention is absolutely free to all law enforcement officers and all public officials! That includes sheriffs, peace officers, county commissioners, and anybody else who serves in a public capacity. Registration includes admittance to all events at the convention and all meals. This event is also open to the general public at a cost of $150 per person or $200 per couple.

But here's the catch: You've got to GET THERE on your own and find a place to stay. That's not too much to ask, is it?

The event will be held at the Ameristar Hotel & Convention Center in St. Charles, Missouri. So register now, while there is still room. A large crowd is expected. More details will be available soon at our web site, www.cspoa.org.

In liberty,
Richard Mack

B. F. Skinner's Perfect Laboratory-Race to the Top
Capitol Hill Outsider When I went to school besides the 3Rs we learned history, including the American Revolutionary War, the Constitution and so many of the important things. Things one needs to know to be a educated citizen. Values were part of our learning as was multiplication, spelling and proper grammar. We could diagram a sentence and give change without the use of a calculator. We understood the meaning of words, the value of ideas and that actions have consequences. Since I and my slide rule left higher education, that education has become less education and more the opposite -- dumbing down of students -- with behavior training in place of education. "Operant conditioning takes away the normal process of thinking so that the transfer of knowledge in normal human thinking activity is stunned. This is a dumbing down technique purposely being used on American children. Mastery Learning, Master Teachers, Common Core Standards, NAEP, National Assessment of Educational Progress, & data-trafficking is the foundation for a national curriculum, national testing, national teacher certification, & a national data bank to monitor & force compliance. Budget Proposes Major Changes to Sustainable Communities Initiative
American Planning Association "In an effort to rejuvenate the unauthorized, defunded Sustainable Communities Initiative at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), President Obama proposed a major overhaul to both the structure and the function of the competitive grant program in his FY14 budget.
"The President's budget recommends changing the name of the Office of Housing and Sustainable Communities, the office within HUD that administers the Sustainable Communities Initiative, to the Office of Economic Resilience (OER)."

More newspeak here. We the people have made "sustainable" as it is used by the globalists into a dirty word, as it should be. So now it is "resilience." What will be their next iteration? This is in the same manner that "global warming" was changed to "climate change," and ICLEI became local governments for sustainability. Are they now going to change that to local governments for resilience? Can they run out of words? Nope, they will just print new ones like the Fed prints dollars. [Read more]

Congratulations to Jean Yarbrough

Posted: 07 May 2013 08:15 AM PDT

(Scott Johnson)

When a left-wing academic wins the recognition of the American Political Science Association, it is at best an event full of sound and fury signifying nothing but the left-wing tilt of academia and the left's domination of the institutions conferring recognition and renown. When a conservative of some stripe achieves such recognition, it suggests (to me) that his or her undeniable excellence has overcome the resistance of the judges.

Such is the case with Theodore Roosevelt and the American Political Tradition by our friend Jean Yarbrough, professor of government and Gary M. Pendy Sr. Professor of Social Sciences at Bowdoin College. We are gratified to note that Professor Yarbrough's book has won the American Political Science Association's Richard E. Neustadt Award for the best book published on the U.S. presidency in 2012. As they say at the link: "The Richard E. Neustadt Award For the Best Book on the Presidency is among the most prestigious awards recognizing scholarly contributions to political science in the nation."

"I was thrilled that the awards committee chose a book that examines the political thought of one of our most iconic presidents," says Professor Yarbrough. "For anyone wishing to understand how the American political tradition has unfolded over the past hundred years, Theodore Roosevelt is a good place to start."

It is an important and, in the fairness of the judgment it renders on Roosevelt, an exemplary, even moving, book. Like Professor Yarbrough, we are thrilled that her book has been honored with the award given by the APSA. The publisher has more on the book here, and our own Steve Hayward profiled Professor Yarbrough upon her induction into the Power Line 100 just last month.

The gospel according to Keith

Minnesota Fifth District Rep. Keith Ellison is the first Muslim elected to Congress and one of its leftwardmost members. I wrote a backgrounder on him for the Weekly Standard just before he was elected to Congress and posted "Keith Ellison for dummies" on Power Line as a companion to the Weekly Standard article. Ellison is a key to understanding the Age of Obama, a thesis I explored in "From Keith Ellison to Barack Obama."

Ellison is a little bit hustler, a little bit thug, and a lot of Marxist claptrap wrapped with an Islamic overlay. Which branch of Islam is it that squares with equal rights for women, gay marriage, abortion on demand and the rest of the Democratic platform? Perhaps some day an enterprising journalist will inquire politely of Rep. Ellison and get the scoop. In the meantime, consider this recent letter from Ellison to a constituent, forwarded by a friend:

Dear [name redacted],

Thank you for contacting me regarding equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans. I am honored to hear from you and proud to represent you. Since coming to Congress, I have been working very hard to advance my policy agenda based on four key priorities-peace, prosperity for working families, environmental sustainability, and support for human and civil rights.

As you know, the American Pledge of Allegiance ends with the words "with liberty and justice for all." I take those words seriously. "For all" means equal rights for everybody, including the LGBT community. This is what informs my position on full LGBT rights. Our nation's strength lies in our diversity. America succeeds when we endorse and champion policies of inclusion, not exclusion. I am committed to ensuring that all Americans, regardless of race, class, creed, ethnicity, sexual orientation or identity, are guaranteed equal rights.

For this reason, I believe the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a discriminatory law that denies same-sex couples federal benefits, including Social Security, health benefits, family and medical leave, and equal protection under the law, must be overturned. In the last Congress, I was proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 1116), which would repeal DOMA. I plan to be an original cosponsor of that bill when it is re-introduced. I am hopeful that the Supreme Court will repeal DOMA when it reveals its decision.

I am also proud of many Minnesotans' efforts in November to stop a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in Minnesota. I hope that Minnesota soon enacts marriage equality for our families, and I am heartened by the positive action taken by the state legislature so far this year.

As Vice-Chair of the Congressional Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus, I will continue to be a strong advocate for individuals who suffer discrimination under unjust laws and practices and are denied their civil rights. Please know that I will maintain an active role in the fight against all forms of discrimination as long as I serve you in Congress.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any issue of concern. You can also sign up for our e-newsletter by visiting our website at www.ellison.house.gov.

Sincerely yours,

Keith Ellison
United States House of Representatives

You have to love Ellison's explication of the Pledge of Allegiance and the significance he attributes to it as something like organic law. Where did that come from? And I bet you didn't even know there was such a thing as a Congressional Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus. It may not seem like it on the surface, but there is actually much we can learn from Rep. Ellison.

UPDATE: The patriotic theme looms large in the legend Ellison seeks to create for himself. Today's Star Tribune reports that Ellison's forthcoming (in September) autobiography is titled My Country, 'Tis of Thee. You can be sure we'll be taking a close look at the book as soon as it is available for review.

Hillary Clinton - culpable for Benghazi from beginning to end

Posted: 06 May 2013 08:16 PM PDT

(Paul Mirengoff)

When it first became clear that the CIA's Benghazi talking points had been altered, many of us viewed the White House as the prime suspect. After all, it served President Obama's political purposes to claim, at the height of a political campaign in which he was taking credit for the fall of al Qaeda, that the death of a U.S. ambassador was down to spontaneous outrage over a video, rather than pre-planned terrorism.

It turns out, however, that the State Department was the prime culprit. It was State that pushed back hard against the original talking points. The White House, probably for the political reason cited above, took its side.

Why did State want the talking points changed? Because it had ignored warnings about rising terrorist activity in Libya and had reduced security rather than beefing it up, as our embassy requested.

Under these circumstances, it would not do to attribute the Benghazi killings to the terrorism about which top State Department officials had been warned. Much better to lump what happened in Libya together with the protests that occurred in Egypt, and thereby characterize it as a demonstration that went too far, rather than premeditated terrorism.

Was Hillary Clinton directly involved in this cover-up? It's difficult to see how she could not have been.

As I understand it, when State pushed back against the CIA's talking points, a White House meeting was scheduled to thrash out the issue. One can imagine Clinton failing to keep apprised of something as mundane as a mounting threat to be safety of her personnel in Libya. But surely she was in the loop when it came to a bureaucratic struggle about how our U.N. ambassador was going to spin the Benghazi debacle. And surely, her representatives would not attend the meeting in which that bureaucratic struggle was to be resolved without being able to state the desires of the Secretary of State.

Hillary Clinton, then, is culpable at the front end of the Benghazi disaster - when she and/or her agents ignored requests for enhanced security - and at the back end - when she and her agents engineered an attempted cover-up. Her culpability during the attacks is doubtful in my opinion, but I would still like to know what she was doing during those tragic hours.

In a serious society, Benghazi, standing alone, would spell the end of Hillary Clinton's public career. But there is much more.

The signature initiative of her time as Secretary of State - the "reset" with Russia - was a fiasco or a farce, depending on how seriously one took it to begin with. I would have had trouble taking seriously an initiative launched with the aid of a fake reset button, even if Clinton had used the correct Russian word for "reset."

We should also remember that Clinton managed to lose the presidential nomination in 2008 despite having a huge lead and major advantages over her relatively unknown rival. She lost in part because she and her staff couldn't figure out the importance of winning caucuses in a host of "off-the-beaten-path" states.

Finally, there should be no statute of limitations on Hillarycare. On big matters, failure is the norm for Hillary Clinton.

Despite all of this, Clinton finds herself the overwhelming favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, if she seeks it. And I gather that she is favored to win the general election, as well.

Will Benghazi derail her? I wouldn't bet on it. First, it's far from clear that, in 2016, the electorate will still care much about what happened in Benghazi (did it ever?) and about subsequent lying about the nature of the attacks.

Second, and relatedly, before Benghazi can hurt Clinton, someone needs the courage to raise the issue. Would Clinton's serious Democratic rivals (if any) have that courage? Or would they fear a backlash from an essentially pacifist base that sees this as a Republican issue, and therefore irrelevant, and that is that may be hell bent on nominating a female.

Would a Republican nominee have the requisite courage? Or would he fear a backlash from female voters offended about suggestions that the first woman candidate for president is, simultaneously, too weak and too conniving for the job?

Perhaps the specter of Benghazi, or simple embarrassment over it, will dissuade Clinton from even entering the race. But I wouldn't bet on that either.

Damn Those Pesky White People!

(John Hinderaker)

It is not easy to select the dumbest article to appear in the New York Times in any given week. Even if we exclude columns by Paul Krugman and Tom Friedman on the ground of lifetime achievement, there is plenty of idiocy to choose from. My nominee for this week is this piece by Nancy DiTomaso, titled "How Social Networks Drive Black Unemployment." Ms. DiTomaso, a professor at Rutgers business School, undertakes to explain persistently high unemployment among African-Americans. Some would say the obvious culprit is the anti-growth policies of the Obama administration, but Ms. DiTomaso is not interested in turning over that particular rock. Her starting point is quite different:

The most obvious explanation for this entrenched disparity is racial discrimination.

Well, no, actually it isn't. But Ms. DiTomaso thinks she has brilliantly hit upon an alternative theory:

But in my research I have found a somewhat different culprit: favoritism. Getting an inside edge by using help from family and friends is a powerful, hidden force driving inequality in the United States.

Such favoritism has a strong racial component. Through such seemingly innocuous networking, white Americans tend to help other whites, because social resources are concentrated among whites. If African-Americans are not part of the same networks, they will have a harder time finding decent jobs.

There is a kernel of truth to this observation. Especially in small business, it is common to get a job through a relative or friend. So in general, it is good to have friends and relatives who have jobs or, better yet, own businesses. But Ms. DiTomaso makes this commonplace observation the driving force of our economy:

Favoritism is almost universal in today's job market. In interviews with hundreds of people on this topic, I found that all but a handful used the help of family and friends to find 70 percent of the jobs they held over their lifetimes; they all used personal networks and insider information if it was available to them.

This is a ludicrous claim. It would be fun to see Ms. DiTomaso's original research, and to deconstruct it. She offers a little more detail here. It turns out that her "research" consisted of "interviews ... conducted with almost 250 whites in New Jersey, Ohio, and Tennessee." She concluded that:

In my study, I found that 99 percent of the interviewees found 70 percent of the jobs they had held throughout their lifetimes with the added help from family, friends, or acquaintances, who provided them with inside information not available to others, such as when a job was available, used influence on their behalf, or actually offered them an opportunity or a job.

So if someone tells you a job is available, you are benefiting from white skin privilege! And if you are offered a job by an "acquaintance," as opposed to a perfect stranger, you are part of a racial hierarchy. Does that mean that, if you have been working for a company for 15 years and the person who decides to promote you is someone you have worked with and are acquainted with, you have gotten your new job with the aid of "favoritism"? I suspect that if we saw Ms. DiTomaso's original data, the answer would be Yes.

Moreover, Ms. DiTomaso only interviewed (a pathetically small number of) whites. If she had interviewed people of other races, would the result be the same or different? We don't know. I suspect that if she applied the same criteria, Ms. DiTomaso would find that African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and whites find jobs through friends, relatives and acquaintances in more or less equal proportions. Without having any such basis of comparison, her research is useless at best.

One obvious defect of Ms. DiTomaso's theory is that she does not differentiate among jobs. So if you work during high school in your father's grocery store, and your college roommate tells you a local factory is hiring, at minimum wage, for the summer, and you then attend medical school and get a job as a doctor in a medical clinic-voila! Two-thirds of your jobs are the result of white skin privilege!

Every sentient being knows that universities give preferential treatment to African-American applicants, and large businesses of all kinds do the same. Still, there are constraints: you can't become a lawyer without going to law school, you can't become an engineer without being able to do math, and you can't get a job of any kind if you are in prison. In Ms. DiTomaso's world, all such obvious realities are washed away: it's all a question of whom you know!

The point of Ms. DiTomaso's book, on which this column is based, is to explain why African-Americans' high unemployment rate and relatively low incomes, on the average, are the fault of whites, even though there is little racism or race discrimination (of that kind, anyway) in our society. But like most liberals when they talk about race, Ms. DiTomaso is oblivious to the diversity of American life. She sees only in black and white. To hear her tell it, whites are an entrenched overclass who maintain their status by "networking," to the detriment of African-Americans. This description of economic life in America could make sense only to someone who doesn't get out much. In fact, Asians, on the average, out-earn whites by a substantial margin.

How can this be, if the principal determinant of job progress is white networking? Ms. DiTomaso writes that "Favoritism is almost universal in today's job market," and she ridicules the idea that people get ahead through hard work. She says that "Inequality reproduces itself because help is typically reserved for people who are 'like me.'" But why has inequality not reproduced itself with respect to Asian-Americans, if "favoritism is almost universal?" It is also worth noting that the income gap between Jews and gentiles is wider than that between whites and blacks. Is this, too, the result of "favoritism?"

As I said, it isn't easy to identify the dumbest article in a single issue of the New York Times, let alone a week's worth, but unless something even worse appears in the next few days, Ms. DiTomaso deserves the prize.

Terrorists, Then and Now

Posted: 06 May 2013 06:19 PM PDT

(John Hinderaker)

Saturday was the anniversary of the Kent State shootings in 1970. The keynote speaker at the annual commemoration service on the Kent State campus was Bill Ayers, Barack Obama's political mentor. At the time of the Kent State confrontation, Ayers was underground, a terrorist on the run. Terrorists are perhaps less popular today then they were forty years ago, and after Ayers' speech, a reporter had the temerity to ask Ayers whether he was any different from the Tsarnaev brothers. Good question!

There is no relationship at all between what Weather Underground members did and the bombings that two brothers allegedly committed on April 15 in Massachusetts, Ayers said in response to a reporter's question. No one died in the Weather Underground bombings.

That is debatable: the Weathermen are widely believed to have been involved in the bombing of a San Francisco police station in which one officer was killed and another blinded, and Ayers' former colleagues carried out the 1981 Brinks robbery in which three people were murdered. To the extent that the Weathermen's casualty count was low, it was due entirely to the group's incompetence. Ayers conveniently fails to mention that the famous 1970 Greenwich Village explosion that killed several of his fellow Weather Underground members occurred while they were making bombs packed with nails to kill soldiers at Fort Dix.

And there is no question that Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, enthusiastically advocated violence, including mass murder. Their book Prairie Fire, published in 1974, advocated the violent overthrow of the United States government:

The only path to the final defeat of imperialism and the building of socialism is revolutionary war.... Socialism is the violent overthrow of the bourgeoisie, the establishment of the dictatorship of the proletariat, and the eradication of the social system based on profit.... Revolutionary war will be complicated and protracted.... It includes mass struggle and clandestine struggle, peaceful and violent, political and economic, cultural and military, where all forms are developed in harmony with the armed struggle. Without mass struggle there can be no revolution. Without armed struggle there can be no victory.

Ayers and Dohrn were bloodthirsty, even by the often-depraved standards of the time. Dohrn is the only person, to my knowledge, who publicly applauded the Charles Manson murders. She thought they were "groovy."

You might think that someone with Ayers' criminal past would be ashamed, and would try to make amends. But no:

The United States is the most violent country that has ever been created, Ayers said.

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., committed daily war crimes in Vietnam "and I get asked about violence when what I did was some destruction of property to issue a scream and cry against an illegal war in which 6,000 people a week are being killed," Ayers said. "Six thousand a week being killed and I destroyed some property. Show me the equivalence. You should ask John McCain that question ... I'm against violence."

This is, of course, exactly the rationale that the Tsarnaev brothers and every other terrorist under the Sun employs. The reporter who wrote this local news story doesn't seem to be buying it:

In his talk to the crowd, Ayers mentioned that in 1970, he lost three friends in the Weather Underground, including his lover, Diana Oughton. He did not explain in his talk how they died - they were killed when nail bombs they were making in a Greenwich Village townhouse blew up.

Telling the crowd the circumstances of those deaths would have been "inappropriate," Ayers said afterward. "Everybody here knows," he said.

I doubt that. Certainly the liberal news media haven't publicized the fact that the man who launched Barack Obama's political career in his living room was the leader of an organization that attempted the mass murder of American soldiers at a dance.

Authorities said the bombs were intended to be used at a dance at the Fort Dix Army base in New Jersey.

"No one knows for sure but I think they were. And had they carried it out it would have been a catastrophe," Ayers said. "But they didn't and it didn't happen. But what did happen is, on that same day John McCain murdered civilians. Do we have any responsibility for that? Should there be any reconciliation for that? Should he tell the truth about it?"

Actually, on the day when the townhouse explosion occurred, March 6, 1970, John McCain had been a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for two and a half years. He was shot down in 1967. Bill Ayers is a lying sack of shit, and that is one of his better qualities.

Tell your Senators that $6.3 TRILLION is too high a price to pay for amnesty!

Yesterday, Heritage released the results of its exhaustive study and found that the cost of giving amnesty to 11 million illegal aliens would be $6.3 TRILLION.

The Heritage Foundation reports that the $6.3 trillion is probably the lowest possible net cost to the federal government over the lifetimes of the amnestied illegal aliens. It could end up being much higher.

Tell Your Senator s With One Click

Some Senators seem to think taxpayers should foot the bill for 11 million illegal aliens to access approximately 80 federal welfare programs.

Each Senator needs to hear from thousands of taxpayers who say NO to spending $6.3 trillion to grant amnesty to illegal aliens.

 Send Message

or click https://www.numbersusa.com/sendfax?firstname=&lastname=&email=lindarosen%40aol.com&districtid=&id=14686

The $6.3 trillion number is so high that it may be difficult to contemplate the extraordinary magnitude of it. But it amounts to an incredible financial liability that this Congress would hang around the nec ks of our children and grandchildren to pay for this amnesty the rest of their lives.

$6.3 Trillion

What is the goal of immigration reform?

As Heritage President Jim DeMint put it yesterday, "Any immigration reform should improve the lives, the incomes, and the opportunities" of those who are lawfully in America.

The Gang of Eight's amnesty proposal does the opposite by burdening taxpayers with supporting unlawful immigrants. The Heritage Foundation's new report estimates that an amnesty like the Gang of Eight's bill would cost U.S. taxpayers $6.3 trillion.

"We're advocating on behalf of those who have come here lawfully and all American taxpayers-this is going to be a huge cost to them, and it will diminish opportunities in the future," DeMint said on "Your World with Neil Cavuto" yesterday.

>>> Watch our new video on the cost of amnesty

The $6.3 trillion number is the cost to taxpayers of supporting unlawful immigrants under amnesty, including any taxes those immigrants would pay into the system versus the amount of government benefits and services they would take out.

On an individual level, the number is just as stunning. As Heritage experts and study authors Robert Rector and Jason Richwine write, "the average adult unlawful immigrant would receive $592,000 more in government benefits over the course of his remaining lifetime than he would pay in taxes."

Many conservatives believe that if an individual has a job and works hard, he will inevitably be a net tax contributor (paying more in taxes than he takes in benefits). In our society, this has not been true for a very long time.

With amnesty, unlawful immigrants would become lawful-and become eligible for Obamacare benefits, Social Security, welfare, and Medicare. Rector and Richwine's study addresses the costs as they would accrue after the Gang of Eight's waiting period for benefits:

After 13 years, unlawful immigrants would become eligible for means-tested welfare and Obamacare. At that point or shortly thereafter, former unlawful immigrant households would likely begin to receive government benefits at the same rate as lawful immigrant households of the same education level. As a result, government spending and fiscal deficits would increase dramatically.

This isn't the only way to reform immigration. As DeMint and Rector write in The Washington Post, "A properly structured lawful immigration system holds the potential to drive positive economic growth and job creation. But amnesty for those here unlawfully is not necessary to capture those benefits."

It is a "false choice," DeMint said, for people to say that amnesty is necessary to immigration reform.

The American people deserve to hear all sides of this debate-they don't deserve a gang of Senators pushing through an Obamacare-style bill in the back rooms of Washington.

"Let's unite the American people by doing this in public, one piece at a time," DeMint said. "You don't have to do the amnesty to get all the benefits of reform."

After "Hope and Change"

The 2012 presidential election was, by all accounts, a turning point in American politics. But the campaign was a lot smaller than the stakes. An empty campaign resulted in, perhaps, the "weakest re-elected president in American history," according to noted political scientist James Ceaser.

What does American politics look like after "hope" and "change"? And how should conservatism respond to the lessons of the 2012 election?

Commencing Liberalism

It's commencement time again: rows of folding chairs, the polyester cap and gown, a dozen of your closest relatives listening intently for your name, and, of course, the big name speaker. Ohio State booked President Obama. University of Virginia grads will hear from comedian Stephen Colbert, and Harvard gets Oprah.

These speeches are mostly opportunities to get a little good press coverage and encourage the next generation to join AmeriCorps or recycle. In 1964, though, President Lyndon B. Johnson used his commencement speech to usher in a new stage of liberalism.

So What Should College Graduates Do?

Graduating from college is supposed to exciting, but, for the class of 2013, the world looks pretty grim.

Horror stories of Kermit Gosnell's abortion mill continue to shock our consciences; the Supreme Court toys with redefining marriage; terrorists strike around the globe and here at home; unemployment rates remain high while our entitlement programs sink us into bankruptcy. How should new college graduates confront these challenges? With truth, love, and responsibility, says Ryan Anderson.

Tensions Grow Between China and India
By Dean Cheng

Even as tensions remain high around the disputed Senkaku islands, China appears to be asserting its sovereignty elsewhere along its periphery. Indian officials have accused China of a deep incursion into the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region, with Chinese forces reportedly 10 kilometers inside Indian territory.

While there have been regular Chinese probes across the "Line of Actual Control" (or LAC, the de facto Sino-Indian border) over the past decade, this is the deepest penetration yet. As worrisome, this is in Ladakh, in the highly sensitive region of Kashmir, which is claimed by both India and Pakistan, China's longtime ally. A Chinese presence that penetrates the LAC in this region dangerously destabilizes the situation, as it may well be taken as a renewed commitment by China of support for Pakistan. Given the steady modernization of Chinese forces along the Himalayan frontier, the pressures on the Indian military are clearly growing.

It's time for South Korea to face facts: The Kaesong experiment has failed. The ideologically motivated joint business venture with North Korea known as the Kaesong industrial complex is not economically viable, nor has it achieved any of its political objectives.

With violence against the mainstream political parties escalating, initial Pakistani excitement about the upcoming national elections is beginning to give way to fear that bombs, not ballots, will have the greatest impact on the outcome.
