GLENN BECK TEACHES PART OF AMERICA'S HISTORY LIKE NEVER BEFORE USING GUNS IN NRA KEYNOTE SPEECH: 'IT IS THE MAN, NOT THE GUN'
Glenn Beck giving keynote speech at NRA Convention (TheBlaze/Mark Mabry)
It is the man, not the gun, that is capable of committing acts of evil.
That was the message Glenn Beck conveyed throughout his highly anticipated keynote speech at the 2013 NRA Convention on Saturday. He made that case using storied antique firearms as he taught America's captivating history through guns. Make no mistake, the history behind some of the guns Beck handled on stage will blow you away.
One story about a particular shotgun, wielded by a "naked hippie" shooting birds decades ago, seemed to have the most impact. Beck explained that after receiving a early morning call about the naked hippie shooting birds out of season, police in California arrested the said hippie and confiscated his WWII-era shotgun.
That man turned out to be the notoriously evil serial killer Charles Manson. After his gun was taken away, he then turned to a knife to commit at least nine grisly murders with his cult group.
"Charlie Manson had his gun taken away. Charlie Manson didn't use a gun. He killed with a knife," Beck told a crowd of thousands at the George R. Brown Convention Center Saturday. He explained that it is a person's intent, not what tool he or she decides to use to commit evil.
"We have to admit two things," he added. "That weapons will always find their way into the hands of bad people, always...but we must declare this: that guns must remain in the hands of good people."
Julia Davis, a former Customs and Border Protections Officer, was falsely declared a domestic terrorist and subjected to retaliatory efforts against her by the Department of . Her home was raided by a 27 man "special response team." She was twice falsely and imprisoned, but later exonerated. She is now a national security expert and has put out a historical documentary titled Top Priority: The Terror Within
. She claims that the War On Terror by the Department of Homeland Security is a charade and that the agency seems to be targeting concerned American patriots.
DHS Whistleblower Censored from 60 minutes #N3
Davis says her documentary is about her time with DHS in dealing with from countries with ties to terrorism, who are seeking to come into the United States.
She says that they had "very specific alerts" that on July 4, 2004 that members of Al-Qaeda would be attempting to cross the border from Mexico into the US. The land port where Ms. Davis worked is the largest and busiest land port in the world, San Ysidro Port. She says that Islamic clerics say this is the best place to breech the US border because of the large number of people coming through.
She says that she began to input the information into the DHS database, which she was required to do as a supervisor, and she noticed that she had a high number of people from terrorist countries set to come through her port on July 4. She says there were 23 people form terrorist countries who were to be admitted into the US on that day. She said the average number of people coming from terrorist countries would normally be 5-10 per month. So to have 23 in a ten hour span was "alarming."
But it goes further. Davis says that none of these people were subjected to routine checks that were in place for applicants from terrorist countries. According to Davis, "They were supposed to be fingerprinted. They were supposed to be asked why they left the US, why they were coming back, where they were living... all these different procedures that would have taken approximately an hour for each person. None of it was done."
In fact, in some of the cases, the individuals didn't fill out the paperwork or provide the documents they were supposed to in order to come into the United States.
Davis indicated that the Port Director was not informed about the situation and that when she went higher up to Intel and she said she "nearly fell down" when she found a "closed door." The entire Intel office was "given the day off so that they could Bar-B-Q on the Fourth of July." Ultimately there was no one that she could report her findings to. Coincidence? I think not.
Last Sunday's intimate gathering with Amity Shlaes turned into a fascinating
discussion on how to apply President Calvin Coolidge's successful early 20th Century policies of less government/lower taxes to early 21st Century federal policies.
Along with her daughter, Helen, Amity charmed the audience and reminded us all
of how vitally important it is to state our case for a smaller federal government by
providing examples of its success in American history.
Amity's book, Coolidge, certainly serves as a scholarly and intellectual argument for our free market, limited government economic philosophy .
WPHT's Dom Giordano and Bill Miller (author, The Tea Party Papers) also voiced thought-provoking commentary on our current state of affairs. The Audience could not have been more genial and receptive. It was a pleasure being in such fine company!
For more coverage, please click the link below for Bill Lawrence's column, "Amity Wows Philly." (Video of the event will soon be posted on our website.)
Last week's Second Amendment Rally, organized by PA State Representative Daryl Metcalfe, filled the giant steps leading to the Capitol Building. In PA, Pro-Second Amendment forces are on the offensive. For a news account of the story, visit:
Our April/May Pot of Gold Money Drop has almost reached the half-way mark!
We hope to continue our efforts to restore limited government and free market principles but can only do so with your help.
Programs, such as Amity Shlaes on the President Who Said "No" and Ben Shapiro on the 2nd Amendment, are the result of your generosity. We are currently planning our 5th annual July 4th Celebration, "Preserving America's Heritage," to be held on Independence Mall. Details to be announced soon.
Many thanks to those who have already "dropped a donation!" So far, we have raised over $2,300! If each of you gave just $5, we would surpass our goal many times over.
As an extra incentive:
* Those giving a $25 donation will receive an Independence Hall Tea Party t-shirt as our thank you.
* Those giving a $50 donation will receive one Independence Hall Tea Party golf shirt or two t-shirts as our thank you.
* Those giving a $100 donation will receive two
Independence Hall Tea Party golf shirts as our thank you.
Jury deliberations in the Philadelphia Gosnell trial continue, though a verdict could be reached at any moment.
Tonight, Fox News will examine the Gosnell horror story in a special hour-long broadcast beginning at 9 PM (EST).
Tuesday: PBS Presents - Constitution US with Peter Sagal
It will be extremely interesting to see how the United States Constitution is presented in this new PBS series to begin airing Tuesday, May 7, 8 PM (EST).
Five Great May Events: From Dr. King to Save the 2nd Rally
Dr. Alveda King, Civil Rights leader and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, will be appearing at four different area venues on Monday (May 6) and Tuesday (May 7).
Dr. King's first stop, on Monday, at St. Peter Church in West Brandywine, will feature a presentation on "Healing the Woman, Healing the Family, Healing the Nation."
She will then make subsequent appearances in Downingtown, Coatesville, and West Chester. (Dr. King's appearance in our area is a terrific antidote to the culture of "Dr." Gosnell.)
Next, our friends at the Mathew J. Ryan Center have alerted us to an event taking place on Monday, May 13, at the National Constitution Center.
Dr. Richard Beeman, the John Welsh Centennial Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, will be unveiling his new book, Our Lives, Our Fortunes and Our Sacred Honor: The Forging of American Independence, 1774 - 1776. (Dr. Beeman will be featured in at least one upcoming episode of the Constitution US with Peter Sagal.)
The following night, Tuesday, May 14th, Dick Morris will be prognosticating the future political course of the nation--also at the National Constitution Center.
The following week, Wed., May 22, Drexel University College Republicans
will be hosting Brooke Goldstein -- author, filmmaker, and human rights attorney. Ms. Goldstein's documentary, The Making of a Martyr, will be shown prior to her talk.
And finally, last but not least, on Sat., May 25th, Gun Rights Across America will hold a 'Save the 2nd' outdoor rally on Independence Mall. Save the date!

Brigitte Gabriel to Speak
in Baltimore, MD!
Brigitte Gabriel
Leading Global Islamic Terrorism Expert
CLICK HERE to view Brigitte's special video invitation!
It is my privilege to invite you to a special event featuring Brigitte Gabriel, Founder and President of ACT! for America. This event is free and open to the public and will be held at the following:
Central Christian
7411 Rossville Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21237
Monday, May 6th at 7 pm
Ms. Gabriel will speak on the rise of Islamic radicalism in your community and in our nation. Her story of survival as a persecuted Christian living in a bomb shelter for 7 years will have you captivated and inspired! She will share how the events of 9/11 compelled her to start ACT! for America, the largest national security grassroots organization in the U.S.
The recent assaults at our embassies have been a sobering wake-up call to America. The lesson is that we should be displaying strength to our enemies, not appeasement which only demonstrates our weakness. Without question, the threats of radical Islam to America have increased.
These are just some of the threats Brigitte will discuss:
Suppression of criticism of Islam
Homegrown jihad
Terrorists infiltrating our borders
The Muslim Brotherhood and creeping sharia law in America
Misrepresentation of history in our public education
You will hear first-hand how ACT! for America is successfully rolling back the tide of radical Islam...how we are winning legislative victories...how we don't have to live in fear or resign ourselves to the inevitability of the threats arrayed against us...and how we will prevail.
I encourage you to forward this email to everyone you know. For those who are not familiar with ACT! for America, please share this short video with them.
I know those of you who have heard Brigitte will agree, not only do you not want to miss this, but you will want to bring your relatives and friends with you. It will be an event people will be talking about for a long time to come!
Invite your friends and come join us in Baltimore, MD! We look forward to seeing you on May 6th

Pennsylvania Responds to National Education Standards
Thank you for helping to stop Pennsylvania's implementation of national education standards known as Common Core. Things are moving quickly and gaining speed across the Commonwealth. Just this week, Truth in American Education moved Pennsylvania into their "Rejection Pending" category and revised their map to show us as a state that is "Fighting Back" and that is solely due to your efforts in contacting your legislators.
An important state-wide Common Core townhall meeting will be held this Friday May 10th which you can watch live streamed. UNITEPA is hosting Emmett McGroarty of the American Principles Project and Dr. Peg Luksik of Founded on Truth to discuss Common Core at both the national and state levels.
If you are in the Lancaster area and would like to attend this meeting in person see details here, otherwise, click here to register to watch the event online. Once you register, an email will be sent to you two days prior to and again three hours prior to the actual broadcast with this Ustream channel link. Click here for more specific details.
New MUST READING to get you up-to-speed on the details concerning Common Core by Peg Luksik "Assessing the Common Core". It is a bit long, but provides the details you need to get a deeper understanding of this dangerous imposition of the top-down, one-size-fits-all regulations.
Please check out this excellent article written by our friend and western Pennsylvania native Matt Shipley who also served as Assistant Platoon Commander at SEAL Team EIGHT. Read: "Rotten to the Common Core"
Please continue to promote the Pennsylvanians Against Common Core on-line petition and Facebook page. We would like to be able to attend the May 15 Senate hearing with a petition with more than 10,000 signatures and we need your help in reaching out to your friends and contacts to make that happen.
CCG Patriots,
If you care about the future of America, you must be informed on Common Core Standards and take action to fight it. If you missed our April meeting or thought of friends or family who need to hear Peg's message, bring them and join our fellow patriots at UNITE PA for this event.....CARPOOL ANYONE (about a 2 hour drive)?

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! ATTENTION!
Meeting place for May 10 meeting has changed to PJ Ryans. This is an important meeting to wrap up plans and get going on our agenda for the coming months. Details below.
At the April meeting you did a great job of putting some good ideas out there on priorities and issues.
Some of the top issues that made our list were Voter Fraud, Common Core (education issues), Second Amendment, Right to Work, Agenda 21/smart meters, and 2014 Elections.
In May, let's finish the job. We'll finalize our issues and set up working groups to get things moving.
It is our belief and the belief of many members that we need to become a more action oriented group. We can discuss ways that we can move in that direction. One of these is our continuing and successful Legislative Visit Program headed up by Camille Heppard and Sonny Hofmann.
Bring your ideas and energy!
In June we plan to try a new meeting place that we think will work well IF we can iron out details. It is convenient and has on-site parking. You may bring food and drink as long as you clean up after yourselves. The Sr. Center does not serve food although there is a kitchen that we can pay to use. Maybe we'll do a Pot Luck dinner a couple of times a year.
Please stay tuned for additional information as there are still a few details that must be taken care of.
PLEASE PLAN TO COME! SEE YOU THERE.

Comcast employees contributed nearly $80,000 directly to Obama for America and roughly $200,000 to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint account benefitting both the Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee, through the first half of 2011. President Obama has recently spent time with top Comcast executives, attending an intimate fundraiser at the home of Comcast executive vice president David Cohen in Philadelphia in June and a private "social reception" at the Martha's Vineyard estate of Comcast CEO Brian Roberts earlier this week.
Shalom ZOA Members, Friends and Supporters of Israel,
Philadelphia is having a parade to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Israel's re-establishment on May 19 and ZOA will be one of the groups taking part.

The parade will wend its way through the heart of Center City from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the Pennsylvania Convention Center, stepping off at 11 a.m.
This is a great opportunity for young and old - and all of those in between - to come out to celebrate Israel.
If you've always wanted to take part in a parade but never had an opportunity, this is your chance! Let's show Philadelphia that support for Israel is stronger than ever!
The annual Israel Independence Day Festival will take place after the parade inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center at 11th and Arch Sts. ZOA will have a booth at the festival, and we will need volunteers to help us.
Please RSVP about participating in the parade either by email or phone - 610-660-9466.

June 19 - 21 we will convene at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC for our fourth annual National Conference & Legislative Briefing.
And here's some really great news: This year's registration fee is only $229! Register by April 15th and you'll receive our "Early Bird" rate of just $189!
We also offer again this year special benefits for Patriot Eagle and Patriot sponsors.
We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:
Steven Emerson - Journalist, author, and the Executive Editor of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. A. M. Rosenthal, late-managing editor of The New York Times, described Emerson as "one of the nation's best national security correspondents."
John Guandolo - Former FBI agent and one of America's leading authorities on the Muslim Brotherhood and its inner workings in America. Guandolo spoke at our conference in 2011 and received rave reviews from conference attendees!
Ezra Levant - Canadian lawyer, author, newspaper columnist with Sun Media, and former publisher of the Western Standard. Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!
The National Conference & Legislative Briefing will begin on Wed. evening, June 19th, and conclude on Friday, June 21st at noon, with additional optional training sessions Friday afternoon.
It will again feature our very popular Capitol Hill Awards Luncheon and our signature gala banquet-and of course, our Legislative Briefing, where Members of Congress will brief you on various issues and answer your questions.
So make your plans now to join us in our nation's capital for what promises to be our best National Conference & Legislative Briefing ever!
More details to come!
As Israelis celebrate their 65th Independence Day this year, we should all take time out to reflect on the miracle of Israel's independence. We must also ask ourselves the question, "What can I do to ensure that this miracle of Israel survives and thrives?"
We announced earlier this week that we'll be headed to New Orleans the first weekend in August for this year's RedState Gathering. As a member of our RedState family, we'd like to extend exclusive Early Bird registration and pricing to you (just use the promo code EARLYBIRD on the registration page).
The 2013 RedState Gathering will be held August 2-3 at the Westin Canal Place in New Orleans, LA. We'll have two full days of speakers and activities and you can expect a good mix of elected officials and potential candidates for the 2014 cycle (we'll keep you informed as additions are made).
The Gathering has always been a unique event, in that all speakers, even the most in-demand and influential, pay their own way and make their own travel arrangements. This helps keep our costs low, a savings we are happy to pass along to our conference attendees. Additionally, we strive to get you up close to the speakers, ask them to take your questions, and we take care of nearly all your meals during the conference. Bottom line: fewer frills, more thrills and access.
We are thrilled to once again be joined by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who will be hosting a reception for all attendees and appear at the Gathering podium as a keynote speaker. A huge hit in 2012, we're looking forward to Gov. Jindal playing an even larger role this year as he welcomes us to his home state.
Now, more than ever, true conservative activists must come together to exchange ideas and strategize for the future. That's what this year's Gathering is all about. We hope you'll join us.
P.S. Don't delay! You'll receive 20% off if you register today - just use the promo code EARLYBIRD. Click here.
From a trusted friend:
As some of you may know, I am associated with Coventry Christian Schools as a parent of a graduate (2010) and as member of the Board of Trustees. Last October we spent a wonderful evening honoring Mark Niehls at our revitalized Founder's Dinner and celebrated our shared heritage in the remarkable community that is Coventry Christian Schools. Our vision for future Founder's Dinners is to inspire and inform not only our alumni and current CCS families but to inspire and inform the Tri-County Area and even our region by hosting speakers and artists who can uniquely assist us in celebrating the heritage, core values, and mission of CCS while also lifting our vision for an even greater future built upon the foundation of our past. The caliber of our speakers and guest artists should provide us with wonderful opportunities to share our CCS story with new partners in Christian education. Proceeds from the dinner will be applied to our annual Coventry Kids Fund for CCS scholarships.
This year we are proud to announce that our distinguished guest and speaker is Dr. Benjamin Carson, and our dinner's theme is "Faith of Our Fathers: The Role of Faith in American Schools." Please join us as we welcome Dr. Carson to the Tri-County Area and celebrate the great things God is doing at CCS!
Dr. Carson is a highly regarded neurosurgeon and motivational speaker who has addressed various audiences across the country. He is one of the most honored and recognized physicians in the world and holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees along with hundreds of awards and citations. He is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He is the author of five books and is the founder of the Carson Scholars Fund. The 2009 award-winning movie entitled Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Carson, premiered on TNT and is based on his memoir. Dr. Carson is an authentic disciple of Christ, has been married to his wife Candy for more than 37 years, and is the father of three sons.
The 2013 Founder's Dinner, which will once again be a part of our Homecoming festivities, will be held at the historic Sunnybrook Ballroom in Pottstown on Sunday, October 13th, 2013. Doors will open at 4:30pm, followed by dinner at 5:15. Dress will be business/professional. Tickets will be priced at $100 until May 15th, then will be $125, so reserve your tickets for the reduced price.
Due to Dr. Carson's international reputation and recent prominence in the media, including his recent speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, we fully anticipate that this event will sell out quickly once advertised to the public. Tickets go on sale to the public April 15. If you are interested in attending, tickets can be purchased online. I will send the link out to those who wish to go on April 15
th
. While online reservations are preferred because they facilitate efficient event planning, you may also complete a paper order form, which I can forward to you as well.
All of us at Coventry Christian Schools, look forward to sharing this very special evening with you and acquainting you with the school and its mission!
Blessings,
Christine Gordon

Heritage Foundation weighs in on Common Core
By Rachel Sheffield April 11, 2013: Policy Analyst, The Heritage Foundation (courtesy of Citizens' Alliance of Pennsylvania)This coming school year, Pennsylvania public schools will begin implementing the Common Core education standards. Like many other states, Common Core standards are quickly making their way into the classroom. While proponents of the standards continue to champion their predicted benefits, there is significant cause for concern.First, the standards represent a massive federal overreach. The Obama Administration jumped on board from the get go, promoting national education standards, via policy and federal taxpayer dollars, as part of their education agenda. Billions of federal dollars have gone towards and are continuing to fund, the promotion and implementation of these standards nationwide. The federal government's involvement with the standards should be alarming. Pushing state and local leaders away from classroom curriculum is not only a breach in federalism but gives parents, teachers, and communities less say over what children learn in school. Education experts have also raised alarm over the quality of the standards. Sandra Stotsky, Professor of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas, has particularly expressed concern over the English Language Arts. Common Core's ELA standards reduce emphasis on literature by promoting the study of "informational texts." Stotsky says
, "A diminished emphasis on literature in the secondary grades makes it unlikely that American students will study a meaningful range of culturally and historically significant literary works before graduation. It also prevents students from acquiring a rich understanding and use of the English language. Perhaps of greatest concern, it may lead to a decreased capacity for analytical thinking."
Common Core goes SOCIAL MEDIA!!! Please share with everyone you know and help us make this a huge success. MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!! Not a TWITTER person.....grab a kid and have some fun.
Parent-Led Reform (@ParentLedReform) will host a Twitter Rally on April 16, 2013 which will start will go from 12:00p-2:00p (EST). We will discuss how the Common Core State Standards effect your family, community and schools? We invite you to participate.
There will be an expert panel and several organizations that will discuss#StopCommonCore. So far I know the panel will consist of:
I'll update with a live link for the Twitter Rally (or you can just follow the hashtag #StopCommonCore) and as the expert panel is finalized.
Update: Be sure to RSVP with the Facebook event invite, this will help keep you up to date with pertinent info.
The whole story on Common Core
Read the sourced and footnoted response to the National Review Online and get all the facts you need to know about Common Core HERE. Compiled by American Principles project and Glenn's research team.
Common Core is the new set of federal education standards being pushed by the Obama administration and several leftist organizations but it's even seeing some support from some conservatives.
defending Common Core, and Glenn gave the definitive response on radio today."Common Core is something that we didn't really get for quite some time and again it's something we've learned from the 9/12 project and concerned parents all around the country that have been bringing this to our attention. When we started in on this work, we thought it was pretty bad. The more we do, the worse it becomes," Glenn said.
Below are some of the points made by the National Review Online in defense of Common Core, followed by Glenn's response.
Today on radio, Glenn gave the definitive response. See that and get all the sources to back it up HERE.
Students in some Albany High School English classes were asked to participate in the unthinkable this week as part of a persuasive writing assignment. The objective? Prove why Jews are evil and convince the teacher of their loyalty to the Third Reich in five paragraphs or less. See the actual lessonHERE.
A concerned parent tipped off TheBlaze to the disturbing fact that NY public schools are teaching the U.N.'s Socialist-leaning Universal Human Rights. We also discovered that the schools are delivering this indoctrination using videos made by the Church of Scientology. Learn what our investigation revealedHERE.
TheBlaze has been at the forefront in uncovering the disturbing details of the nationalized curriculum standard known as Common Core. One of the most troubling aspects of this federal program is that government bureaucrats are currently mining sensitive and highly personal information on children through Common Core's tracking system. Watch the powerful segments from The Glenn Beck Program HERE.
What information is being collected on your kids through Common Core?
TheBlaze TV subscribers can watch past episodes covering Common Core and CSCOPE. The March 14th episode focused on Common Core and the March 7th episode focused on CSCOPE. Not a subscriber? Sign up HERE.
Glenn has spent a lot of time over the past few weeks exposing some of the education initiatives in states across the country that are indoctrinating kids into the radical progressive agenda. Today, Glenn discussed an issue tied into Common Core that many people aren't aware of: data mining.
"We cover many important stories and topics on this program, but I don't think any could be more important than what we are covering tonight: the progressive takeover of America's schools,"
OK....when they look at you like you have a tin foil hat on your head......take some of this information with you. It is 126 pages. I have not read through the entire document (YET) but what I have read is enough to blow off the top of your head. I have highlighted some stuff. KIPP (Charter Schools) has a CHARACTER REPORT CARD on Page 39. So for now start on page 39 and work your way through to page 45. Remember FERPA laws were changed last year and I am sure not one parent is aware that permission to share information about our children no longer requires parental consent. Obama just slipped all these new changes in and I don't believe any parents were ever asked their opinions about these changes. And where was our Republican Congress when this happened???
AGENDA 21 is: The complete control and inventory of every human activity. After your friends read some of this information ask them if they still believe A21 is not real. Chapter 36 of A21 document is devoted to education.
Our government forgets there are still people alive that can think and see through their garbage.
Print this document and get a highlighter...........then start visiting your neighbors, school boards, elected officials and start screaming. GET COMMON CORE AND THE GOVERNMENT out of our class rooms. I think it is time to start a MASS movement for Home Schooling. I know Home Schooling will not be spared. This should be a movement to bring education back to the local level and DESTROY the Federal Department of Education. If our kids are not in school it will create an uprising at all levels. We should not settle for shutting down Common Core because they will masquerade it....they are already doing this in VA. VA supposedly never signed on to Common Core but GUESS WHAT........they ARE implementing Common Core and disguising it from the citizens in VA....of course they aren't doing a good job of hiding it and people in VA are catching on. Our schools have been in the process of a government take over (in earnest) for more than 20 years. If we don't shut down the Department of Education it will never stop. We have to cause a citizen uprising!!
Here is the U.S. Department of Education - Office of Educational Technology document:
"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government - lest it come to dominate our lives and interests"- Patrick Henry
To fix "THE SYSYEM" We must become "THE SYSTEM" - k. bracken "The change we seek has always required great struggle and great sacrifice." - Barack Hussein Obama "The man who speaks to you of sacrifice, speaks of slaves and masters. And intends to be the master." - Ayn Rand

All you have to do is sign up for "iGive"-a program that's been around since 1997.
The concept is as powerful as it is simple.
Every time an iGive member makes an online purchase at over 1,000 brand-name stores, a percentage of that purchase is donated to that person's charity of choice.
And with the holidays just around the corner, you could be helping ACT! for America with every gift you buy!
The concept isn't new. In the mid-1990s many supporters of non-profit organizations signed up with long distance telephone programs where a percentage of their bill was donated to their charity of choice.
But our investigation of iGive has convinced us that this program has an ease of use and sophistication that we find remarkable.
Imagine booking a hotel room on Orbitz-and having 1.6% of that purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
Or buying an Xbox at Best Buy-and having 1.2% of the purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
The same goes for buying merchandise at Amazon, Bath and Body Works, Advance Auto Parts, Game Stop, Kmart, Home Depot, Holiday Inn, Old Navy, NASCAR Superstore, Overstock.com, Mattel, J.C. Penney, Office Max, QVC, Radio Shack, Shoe Carnival, Pottery Barn-and on and on the list goes.
In other words, every time you make a purchase of merchandise you would buy anyway, you would be financially supporting ACT! for America!
All you have to do is log on below and follow the directions to create your account and download the iGive "button." (Note: downloading the "button" is key).
When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems.
So I spent hours researching.
I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.
And the more I dug, the more I liked what I saw. For instance, both of my tech support questions were responded to within 60 minutes. How often does THAT happen?
As you know from our Patriot Partner program, we're all about encouraging a lot of people to each do a little-to do something. When everyone does a little, together we accomplish a lot.
So consider what could happen.
If just 1% of ACT! for America members each purchased just $400 in merchandise in 2013, from all the available outlets, and the average percentage donated to ACT! was 1.5%, the total amount donated back to ACT! for America would be...
...$15,000. That's a lot of money, wouldn't you agree?
And if you were one of those ACT! for America members, it wouldn't cost you one thin dime to help ACT! for America receive $15,000.
If this idea really caught on, and eventually 5% of our members made purchases with iGive, that $15,000 could explode to $50,000, $75,000 or more!
What's more, that 1.5% figure might be low. Many of the merchants offer percentage donations that are much higher. One printer inkjet company I looked at offered 13%!
Every merchant website you visit tells you right at the top what percentage of your purchase price will be donated to ACT! for America.
Just think what we could accomplish with an extra $15,000, $50,000 or $75,000 in our fight against radical Islam!
One of the things I most wanted to know was their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Check it out for yourself. I confirmed the terms with a company representative. And I like what I learned. As security-conscious as I am, I have no hesitation using the service-and I'm already doing so.
I know there are many people out there who would love to support ACT! for America, or give more than they're giving, but in these tough economic times they simply can't.
Well, here's a way that everyone who believes in our mission can easily support what we're doing-at no cost to them.
It doesn't get any better than that.
There are already chapter leaders who have signed up for the program, and the feedback I have been getting from them has been all positive. They love the idea and many of them are already using it.
So please, join me and these ACT! for America chapter leaders who are already signed up and using the iGive service.

Rev. C.L. Bryant's documentary Runaway Slave has been a runaway hit! The film recently won the Crystal Dove Seal, and has been making waves across the country.
Runaway Slave is the story of C.L. Bryant, a former NAACP Chapter president who realized that the Democrat Party and progressive movement was hurting Africa-Americans and keeping them stuck on the government dole. Rev. Bryant discusses the impact of progressivism on the African-American community and how freedom works with a host of leaders including Dr. Alveda King, Herman Cain, Allen West, Dr. Thomas Sowell, and many others.
The Crystal Dove Seal award is given to films that are family-friendly and provide wholesome, educational content. Runaway Slave is an important movie for all audiences, and it has a message that should be heard if we want to achieve a society where character is king.
Congratulations to Rev. C.L. Bryant and the Runaway Slave team on their achievement!

PUSH BACK! Kansas, Missouri respond to Eric Holder Threat
Not backing down. Will Texas join them on Saturday too?
In response to Eric Holder's threat against Kansas for its new gun control nullification bill, there have already been two official responses from Kansas. Plus the Missouri legislature provided some needed backup too.
1. Kansas Secretary of State Kobach responds, draws a line in the sand. "With respect to his concern that federal officials be allowed to enforce federal laws, Mr. Holder's statement is a curious one. He was evidently not concerned that ATFE officials be allowed to enforce federal law when his agency oversaw the "fast and furious" operation to walk guns into the hands of Mexican cartels." 2. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback responds, not backing down Thanks Holder for his opinion, asserts the authority of the people. "The people of Kansas have clearly expressed their sovereign will." READ IT HERE: http://tenthamendmentcenter.com/brownback
3. Missouri legislature backs them up. A day after Holder's threat, the Missouri Senate passed their version of the 2nd amendment Preservation Act by a veto-proof majority - effectively thumbing their nose at the AG. READ IT HERE: http://tenthamendmentcenter.com/missouriHB436
4. Will Texas join in? On Saturday, the Texas House will vote on HB928, a bill that would make most federal gun control measures "nearly impossible to enforce." DETAILS HERE: http://tenthamendmentcenter.com/texasHB928

1.Louisiana Fiscal Hawks Join Democrats to Raise Taxes
Being from Louisiana, I am never surprised by its oddball politics. Many of the people who now have an "R" next to their names for the longest time had a "D" next to their names. And many of them call themselves "fiscal hawks."
These self-proclaimed fiscal hawks have decided to join the remaining liberals in the Louisiana House of Representatives and jack up taxes significantly.
The tax increase will be about $500 million and will be used to fund an expansion of government in Louisiana, putting Bobby Jindal in the unique position of both opposing big government and tax increases all on the same day. That day would be today. The Speaker of the Louisiana House, Chuck Kleckley, seems ready to go with this plan. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2.Sinners in the Hands of Angry South Carolina Voters
I make no apologies for supporting Mark Sanford in South Carolina. The Republican primary voters supported him. He has a record of voting the right way in Congress and doing the right things as Governor.
Now, his personal life is a mess. That is true. I wish it were not. But I am still waiting for the perfect politician and have not found him. However, you must know that as much as Mark Sanford has a troubled, well documented personal life, at least he never got arrested during the course of his divorce.
Elizabeth Colbert Busch did get arrested during her messy divorce. Gateway Pundit even has the mug shot.
The FDA wants 15-year-old girls to get morning-after birth-control drugs over the counter, without the knowledge or consent of either parents or doctors.President Obama says he approves of this decision. But birth-control activists say it doesn't go far enough. They want the requirement for teenage purchasers to show photo ID dropped, and they'd really like to see 11-year-old girls getting these pills.
Behind this drive to shower the Tiger Beat set with birth control supplies lies the conviction that young kids are sexy beasts whose urges cannot be controlled or suppressed.Fifteen, thirteen, eleven years old... they're all swingers now, and nothing can be done to slow them down. All we can do is provide kids with the supplies necessary to cut down on sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy. The religious hangups and moral standards of parents cannot be allowed to interfere with the wisdom of the State in this matter. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
4.See How "Normal" Same-Sex "Marriage" Is?
Via Glenn Reynolds' post "ONE UPSIDE OF GAY MARRIAGE: Messy celebrity gay divorces!", two "married" Hollywood gay guys are getting a "divorce" citing irreconcilable differences (the HuffPo reporter refers to the relationship this way based on a piece in People magazine, while others say the two were in a civil union; see how goofy this whole thing is?). I've never heard of either David Tutera, who hosts WETV's "My Wedding Planner", or Ryan Jurica (it doesn't appear Jurica does anything; this New York Times piece says Jurica was VP of Tutera's wedding planning business 10 years ago). But this little tidbit, not mentioned by Reynolds, stands out:
5.Elizabeth Colbert Busch must explicitly repudiate Dick Harpootlian's bigotry.
Background: "South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian, a trial lawyer, longtime Democratic leader, and legendary figure in local politics, reportedly told a South Carolina Democratic Party dinner [Friday night*] that the Democratic challenger would send "Nikki Haley back to wherever the hell she came from."" Harpootlian, of course, has a history of these kinds of remarks. . . please click here for the rest of the post →
6.Black Keys Concert Review
I went to see the Black Keys live at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville last night, with the Flaming Lips.As a substantial part of what I have to say will sound negative, it is important to emphasize that it was not by any means a bad show. The band played a pretty amazing amount of material and were definitely energetic and engaged. It was not, however, a great show, because of a few nits I have to pick.. . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Did the Saudis warn us about Tamerlan Tsarnaev?
Rick Moran
The government of Saudi Arabia sent a letter to the US Department of Homeland Security in 2012 warning that "something was going to happen in a major US city" and specifically mentioned Tamerlan Tsarnaev, along with three Pakistanis, who might be a threat.
The story appears in the UK Daily Mail. The Saudis denied Tamerlan a visa to visit Mecca in 2011, believing he had been radicalized. The warning came following his trip to Russia in 2012 and came from sources in Yemen.
It "did name Tamerlan specifically," he added. The 'government-to-government' letter, which he said was sent to the Department of Homeland Security at the highest level, did not name Boston or suggest a date for his planned attack.
If true, the account will produce added pressure on the Homeland Security department and the White House to explain their collective inaction after similar warnings were offered about Tsarnaev by the Russian government.
A DHS official denied, however, that the agency received any such warning from Saudi intelligence about Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
'DHS has no knowledge of any communication from the Saudi government regarding information on the suspects in the Boston Marathon Bombing prior to the attack,' MailOnline learned from one Homeland Security official who declined to be named in this report.
The White House took a similar view. 'We and other relevant U.S. government agencies have no record of such a letter being received,' said Caitlin Hayden, a spokesperson for the president's National Security Council.
The letter likely came to DHS via the Saudi Ministry of Interior, the agency tasked with protecting the Saudi kingdom's homeland.
A Homeland Security official confirmed Tuesday evening on the condition of anonymity that the 2012 letter exists, saying he had heard of the Saudi communication before MailOnline inquired about it.
Google changes Palestinian location from 'Territories' to 'Palestine'
Published May 03, 2013

May 3, 2013: Google is de facto recognizing a state of Palestine -- at least on its local home page in the Palestinian territories. (Google)
JERUSALEM - Google is de facto recognizing a state of Palestine -- at least on its local home page in the Palestinian territories.
Google spokesman Nathan Tyler said Friday "We're changing the name 'Palestinian territories' to 'Palestine' across our products."
He said Google consults with a number of sources and authorities when naming countries and is following the lead of several international organizations.
The move comes after a U.N. decision last year upgrading the Palestinians' status to "non-member observer state."
Israel says Palestinian statehood should be reached through negotiations, not unilateral moves.
Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said "Google is not a diplomatic entity which begs the question why are they getting involved in international politics and on the controversial side." Google has a large research and development center in Israel.

Below is an Open letter from Walid Shoebat to a Sheikh who wrote to express his disapproval of Walid's analysis of Abdul Rahman Ali Al-Harbi, the Saudi national who was briefly identified as a suspect in the Boston marathon bombings.
---- Dear Sheikh AL-Faisal Saleh AL-Harbi,
You objected to my analysis of the Saudi national who was briefly a suspect in the Boston marathon bombings, stating that:
"I just want to make it clear to you that our clan [Al-Harbi] is one of the largest Arabic clans maybe the biggest with over 7 million Harbi's in Saudi Arabia only. Accusing the whole clan for covering every Harbi in terrorist attacks is racist...So what if there are 85 terrorists that are Harbis! That is just 0.0012% of them, they don't even make up 1% percent of the tribe."
My dear Sheikh, you deceive by making the claim that terrorism is simply an explosive act against civilians. Let's take a look at your official Al-Harbi clan website which explains your clan's official position on terrorism and while your clan condemns terrorism, it promotes and defines proper Jihad as:
"First: Jihad for the sake of Allah is to go to war with the infidels and the polytheists to remove these and enforce Unitarianism. That is after inviting them to Islam and they reject the invitation (Da'wa). This Jihad is then organized and supervised by the Imam."
Muslim support for sharia law growing in many parts of the world
The Muslim Brotherhood dream of a worldwide caliphate governed by sharia law continues to gain momentum around the world.
Consider the results of four years of public opinion surveys of Muslims conducted by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life (excerpts below; more detail here).
For instance, Pew found strong support for making sharia law the official law in 18 countries. In these 18 countries, 65% to 99% of Muslim respondents supported this.
As the Pew study notes:
...solid majorities in most of the countries surveyed across the Middle East and North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia favor the establishment of sharia, including 71% of Muslims in Nigeria, 72% in Indonesia, 74% in Egypt and 89% in the Palestinian territories.
To paraphrase the line from The Sound of Music song, "How do you solve a problem like sharia?"
You acknowledge it exists, you understand what it is, and you resist it.
You can count on ACT! for America, the nation's largest grassroots national security organization, to continue doing just that.
From preface and exec summaries: -This report was produced by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life - based on public opinion surveys conducted by the Pew Research Center between 2008 and 2012 in a total of 39 countries and territories on three continents - covering every country that has more than 10 million Muslims except for a handful (including China, India, Saudi Arabia and Syria) where political sensitivities or security concerns prevented opinion research among Muslims... The global survey of Muslims was conducted in two waves. Fifteen sub-Saharan African countries with substantial Muslim populations were surveyed in 2008-2009, and some of those findings previously were analyzed in the report "Tolerance and Tension: Islam and Christianity in Sub-Saharan Africa." An additional 24 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe were surveyed in 2011-2012; results from all 39 countries are analyzed here as well as in the August 2012 report on Muslims' religious beliefs and practices.
Sharia Law: -The percentage of Muslims who say they want sharia to be "the official law of the land" varies widely around the world, from fewer than one-in-ten in Azerbaijan (8%) to near unanimity in Afghanistan (99%). But solid majorities in most of the countries surveyed across the Middle East and North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia favor the establishment of sharia, including 71% of Muslims in Nigeria, 72% in Indonesia, 74% in Egypt and 89% in the Palestinian territories.

The GOP & The Hispanic Vote
If you read only one item in today's report, I hope this is it.
The conventional wisdom among Beltway elites is that Mitt Romney lost the 2012 election in part because Barack Obama won a landslide among Hispanic voters. So, as the logic goes, the GOP must now surrender on immigration reform and border security in order to attract more Hispanic votes to remain competitive in future elections.
That is one reason why many well-meaning conservatives in Congress are rushing headlong to embrace legislation that has Democrats salivating. But is it really necessary?
I know conservatives and Christians that are on all sides of the immigration reform debate. But if anyone has deluded themselves into accepting the view that we must accept amnesty, please read this analysis by Byron York. He demolishes the myths surrounding the role of the Hispanic vote in the 2012 election.
According to York's analysis, Romney would have needed 73% of the Hispanic vote last year in order to win the White House. The GOP's best showing ever was George W. Bush's 44% in 2004. Yet, a minor improvement of just four points among white voters would have been enough to defeat Obama.
Whether it is border security or values, the conservative message is not the problem! The GOP is learning all the wrong lessons from the 2012 elections and is suppressing its own base support.
Boston Bombers Planned July 4th Jihad
Just about every day we learn more about the Boston Marathon bombers' motivation. Here is the latest revelation: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told the FBI that they had originally planned on becoming suicide bombers targeting Boston's popular July 4th celebrations along the Charles River.
They clearly wanted to hurt America and they wanted to die martyrs' deaths, taking with them as many innocent men, women and children as they could. Clearly, that is not the mindset of your typical political protestor.
So why did the Boston Marathon become their ultimate target? It was simply a matter of timing. According to Tsarnaev, they finished building their bombs ahead of schedule.
But law enforcement officials are skeptical, according to the Washington Post, citing "the complexity of the bombs." Wait a minute! We were constantly told in the days following the attack that the bombs were "crude" and "unsophisticated." If the bombs were in fact complex devices, it suggests the brothers had help or that Tamerlan's trip to Russia was more than just a family reunion.
But one official lamented, "Maybe we will never know. This is the story he is telling us." Why won't we know? Because he's not "telling us" anything anymore.
The Post explains that Tsarnaev was questioned for 16 hours after his arrest without having been read his Miranda rights, which is legal under the "public safety exemption" if law enforcement is concerned about potential imminent threats. But "Officials have said that he has remained silent since he was arraigned and represented by lawyers."
Investigating the Investigation?
The Obama Administration's attempt to cover-up the truth of what happened during the Benghazi attacks may be unraveling. Fox News reported yesterday that the State Department's inspector general has launched an investigation of the State Department's own Benghazi investigation.
That effort, known as the Accountability Review Board, was another "blue ribbon panel" led by Admiral Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and former U.N. Ambassador Thomas Pickering. So what exactly is the inspector general concerned about? As Fox reports, the board "failed to interview key witnesses who had asked to provide their accounts of the Benghazi attacks to the panel."
The Obama Administration is clearly hiding something. The stonewalling must stop! This is just one more reason why Congress must form a select committee to get to the bottom of this scandal.
Obama Picks "Billionaire Bankster"
Barack Obama has spent much of his administration and his political campaigns exploiting class warfare, railing against the rich and mocking Mitt Romney for his offshore accounts. That is why more than a few eyebrows were raised yesterday by his choice of Penny Pritzker to be Commerce Secretary.
Pritzker is a billionaire and a major funder of left-wing candidates and causes. She was the finance chairman of Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. But she also has a "history of controversial businesses practices," as the New York Post noted, including the "aggressive repackaging of subprime loans." She ran a bank that went bankrupt. And the IRS sued the Pritzker family for exploiting offshore tax havens, eventually seizing $9.5 million.
Obama had considered Pritzker for Commerce Secretary after winning the 2008 election. But her background is so questionable that she withdrew her name from consideration. Now he is apparently prepared to fight for her. Republicans should give him that battle!
Obama Still Tilting At Windmills
During his press conference this week, Barack Obama once again vowed to close the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Among the reasons he offered for wanting to shut it down, Obama said, "It is a recruitment tool for extremists."
The left is so used to being unserious when it comes to national security that it is virtually unable to think logically about the issue. My friend Cliff May at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies and others have pointed out the contradictions of Obama's national security views.
For example, Barack Obama has killed more radical Islamists with drone strikes than any president in our history. During last year's campaign, the White House intentionally leaked the news that Obama personally carries the list of potential targets he wants killed and personally orders the attacks, even when he knows it will result in civilian casualties.
I support these drone attacks. I'd much rather use them than have more American soldiers risk losing their legs or lives to bombs fighting jihadists on the ground. But using the president's logic, if having detained prisoners at Gitmo is a recruiting tool, then certainly killing innocent civilians with drones must be too.
But the inconsistency gets even bigger. The people still at Gitmo are the worst of the worst. The largest percentage of the inmates are Yemenis. We have not returned them because the Yemeni government refuses to assure us that they will not release them. Many Gitmo detainees have been released only to show up again on battlefields trying to kill our troops.
Think about this: Obama is arguing that it would be acceptable from a human rights stand point to call in drone strikes that put innocent lives at risk, but it is somehow inhumane to capture the enemy, feed him three meals a day and give him copies of the Koran in Cuba. Only the left can make that argument with a straight face!
By making Islam immune to criticism, you are treating its adherents as if they were children, unable to correct or adapt their ideology and join modern civilization. Consciously or unconsciously, you are saying they are just not up to it. And in that case, they certainly won't be. Those who fail to criticize Islam are enabling it.

Israel carried out its second air strike in days on Syria early on Sunday, a Western intelligence source said, in an attack that shook Damascus with a series of powerful blasts and drove columns of fire into the night sky.
Israel declined to comment, but Syria accused it of carrying out a raid on a military facility just north of the capital.
Explosions hit the city a day after an unnamed Israeli official said his country had carried out an air strike targeting a consignment of missiles in Syria intended for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
The target of Sunday's attack, according to Syrian media, was the same Jamraya military research center which was hit by Israel in January. Jamraya, on the northern approaches to Damascus, is just 15 km (10 miles) from the Lebanese border.
The Western intelligence source said Israel carried out the attack and the operation hit Iranian-supplied missiles which were en route to Hezbollah.
"In last night's attack, as in the previous one, what was attacked were stores of Fateh-110 missiles that were in transit from Iran to Hezbollah," the source said.
Syria's state television said the strikes were a response to recent military gains by President Bashar Assad's forces against rebels. "The new Israeli attack is an attempt to raise the morale of the terrorist groups which have been reeling from strikes by our noble army," it said.
VIDEO: ERIC HOLDER PREACHES TOLERANCE OF ISLAM TO JEWISH GROUP
Why isn't Holder addressing Muslim groups and speaking out against Islamic Jew-hatred, gender apartheid, honor killings, ethnic cleansing and jihadi wars? No, instead he admonishes the primary target of jihad. (video hat tip Armaros)
Of course there should be no "backlash." No innocent people should be victimized for the deeds of someone else, and any such act is reprehensible. There are two questions here:
1) Is Holder aware of, or even interested in, the fact that Islamic supremacist pressure groups with ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, like the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), exaggerate "backlash" fears beyond all proportion in order to deflect attention away from both the jihad attack at hand and the failure of Islamic groups in America to do anything to prevent such attacks?
2) Will Holder issue a similar warning to the Muslim community in the U.S., calling on them to clean up their act and fight against jihad terror activity sincerely, in both word and deed?

MARYLAND: Terror-linked CAIR demands 'school holiday equality' for Muslim holidays
The Maryland chapter of the Council on Anti-American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MD) today announced the official launch of its "Equality for Eid" (E4E) campaign, a Muslim community-based initiative led by CAIR-MD seeking Montgomery County Public School closing for "Eid" holidays.
PHOTOS show how Muslims celebrate EID by watching animals suffer a slow, agonizing death. If you live in Maryland, please send them to the Montgomery County Public School district. If you need equally gruesome videos, let me know, I have many.
CAIRThe Islamic holiday of Eid ul-Fitr (EED-al-FITTER), or "feast of fast breaking" holiday, marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. The other major holiday, Eid ul-Adha (EED-al-ODD-ha), or "festival of the sacrifice," comes at near end of the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca. E4E members include Montgomery County parents, students, school staff, businesses, non-profit organizations, and county residents.
Coaliton co-chairs include Anhar Karim, a high school junior who is class president and president of the Montgomery County Muslim Students Association; Mimi Hassanein, Vice President of the Montgomery County Muslim Council and co-chair of the Middle Eastern Advisory Group for Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett; Samira Hussein, long-time CAIR volunteer/activist and Family Service Worker for Pre-K programs for Montgomery County Public Schools; Zaffer Mirza, Board of Trustees Member of Muslim Community Center and Muslim community representative of the Montgomery County Public Schools' "School Calendar Committee"; Mumin Barre, president of the Somali Diaspora Network and Co-Chair of County Executive's African Affairs Advisory Group; and Saqib Ali, CAIR-MD director of government relations and former Maryland State Delegate.

SC House Approves Bill Criminalizing Enforcement Of 'Obamacare'

COLUMBIA, S.C. (CBS Charlotte/AP) - The South Carolina House approved a bill Wednesday criminalizing the implementation of President Obama's health care law in the state.
The Republican-controlled House voted 65-39 on the Freedom of Health Care ProtectionAct.
The act renders "null and void certain unconstitutional laws enacted by the Congress of the United States taking control over the health insurance industry and mandating that individuals purchase health insurance under threat of penalty."
"This kind of victory occurs when the grassroots across the State come together and coalesce," Chris Lawton, spokesman for the Greenville Tea Party, told The Greenville Post. "I could not be prouder."
"Here comes the orator! With his flood of words, and his drop of reason." --Benjamin Franklin
Vizzini
In the 1987 quotable classic film "The Princess Bride," a favorite scene pits the heroic "Man in Black" against the villain Vizzini in a "battle of wits" to win the damsel in distress. After Vizzini runs rhetorical circles around himself trying to outsmart the hero, the Man in Black wryly remarks, "Truly, you have a dizzying intellect." Vizzini replies, "Wait till I get going! Now where was I?" Such is the case with ObamaCare. Wait till it gets going!
At least that's been Barack Obama's response when asked about implementation problems -- that when the law really gets going, everyone will love it. This week, however, he attempted to assuage fears by telling us "a huge chunk of it's already been implemented." So no big deal, he says. "Those who can't afford it, we're going to provide them with some subsidies. That's it. I mean, that's what's left to implement because the other stuff's been implemented and it's working fine." In spite of all evidence to the contrary, Obama tells us not to worry: "For the 85 percent to 90 percent of Americans who already have health insurance, they're already experiencing most of the benefits of the Affordable Care Act even if they don't know it. ... They don't have to worry about anything else."
But Hoover Institution fellow Daniel Kessler estimates "that there will be 30 million to 40 million people damaged in some fashion by the Affordable Care Act." Side effects include -- but are not limited to -- skyrocketing premiums, increased wait times for care, higher taxes and loss of jobs and benefits.
Many of the taxes established by ObamaCare are indeed already in effect, though taxpayers won't fully feel the pain until they file their 2013 returns. And the individual mandate penalty, er, tax doesn't begin until 2014, while the so-called "Cadillac" tax on high-cost insurance plans won't kick in until 2018.
Another part of the law that doesn't exist yet is the 15-member Independent Payment Advisory Board -- the infamous "death panel." The panel is supposed to receive a report from government officials overseeing Medicaid, but if the panel doesn't even exist, neither will the oversight. Finding 15 qualified volunteers to stand for such dismal duty -- to say nothing of getting them confirmed by the Senate -- seems to be nearly impossible, though the law was seemingly
designed
with that end in mind. If a panel isn't nominated, Obama won't have to spend political capital on the fight, while much of its authority will fall by default to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius.Meanwhile, compliant states are setting up health exchanges, and, in those that refuse to be White House bagmen, HHS is doing it. Fewer than half of the states have submitted to the coercion. "I'm pretty nervous," said Henry Chao, the government's chief technical officer in charge of establishing the exchanges. "Let's just make sure it's not a third-world experience." Obama himself conceded that there would be "glitches and bumps," though we think the bill's author, Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), was closer to the mark when he recently warned, "I just see a huge train wreck coming." Even Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said, "I agree with him," though he lamented the train wreck was money-related. "I wish we had the money just to do this," Reid said. Let's just say spending too little isn't the problem.
Obama's assurances are also at odds with a new study published by the New England Journal of Medicine. Over a period of two years, a group of top health policy scholars compared objectively measured physical health outcomes for patients using Medicaid with those of a randomly selected control group. They found that those using Medicaid certainly used a lot more health care -- Why not? It's "free"! -- but there were no measurable positive effects on health. This seriously undercuts the arguments of those who advocate ObamaCare's vast expansion of Medicaid.
On a final note, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll, "Four in ten Americans (42%) are unaware that the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is still the law of the land, including 12 percent who believe the law has been repealed by Congress, 7 percent who believe it has been overturned by the Supreme Court and 23 percent who say they don't know enough to say what the status of the law is." We're well aware of the epidemic of low-information voters, but this is, well, inconceivable.

Suddenly, Three Big Developments in the Investigation Into the Benghazi Attack
This news cycle has three new pieces of news related to the Benghazi attack that you must see and keep handy for the next time you hear a White House press secretary say it was "a long time ago" or a secretary of state ask "what difference does it make?"
DEVELOPMENT ONE, courtesy CNN's Paul Cruickshank, Tim Lister, Nic Robertson, and Fran Townsend:
Several Yemeni men belonging to al Qaeda took part in the terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi last September, according to several sources who have spoken with CNN.
One senior U.S. law enforcement official told CNN that "three or four members of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula," or AQAP, took part in the attack.
Another source briefed on the Benghazi investigation said Western intelligence services suspect the men may have been sent by the group specifically to carry out the attack. But it's not been ruled out that they were already in the city and participated as the opportunity arose.
So, unless these multiple sources are wrong, this can accurately be described as an al-Qaeda attack, either preplanned or a target of opportunity.
On the night of the Benghazi terror attack, special operations put out multiple calls for all available military and other assets to be moved into position to help -- but the State Department and White House never gave the military permission to cross into Libya, sources told Fox News.
The disconnect was one example of what sources described as a communication breakdown that left those on the ground without outside help.
"When you are on the ground, you depend on each other -- we're gonna get through this situation. But when you look up and then nothing outside of the stratosphere is coming to help you or rescue you, that's a bad feeling," one source said.
Multiple sources spoke to Fox News about what they described as a lack of action in Benghazi on Sept. 11 last year, when four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed.
"They had no plan. They had no contingency plan for if this happens, and that's the problem this is going to face in the future," one source said. "They're dealing with more hostile regions, hostile countries. This attack's going to happen again."
Under normal circumstances, authorities in Benghazi would have fallen under the chief of mission, one source said -- the person in charge of security in the country who in this case was Stevens. But once Stevens was cornered and members of his security detail pushed his distress button, that authority would have been transferred to his deputy. However, that deputy was out of the country.
That meant the authority then reverted directly to the U.S. State Department, and oversight of the response to the attack that night fell to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Undersecretary of State Patrick Kennedy, who were calling the shots.
It would be very useful to know more about this source. Perhaps it's someone with an agenda, or someone whose recollection of that night is inaccurate. But if it was someone within the special-operations community, someone with firsthand knowledge of what happened that night, well . . . then this is explosive. There was a call for help, there were actions that could be taken, and the State Department decided against it. If it really did lead all the way back to Hillary Clinton, this would end her 2016 chances. "She left Americans to die horrible deaths" is pretty much the worst charge a presidential candidate could possibly face.
And while we don't know with absolute certainty that what this source is saying is true . . . if it is true, it would explain a lot about the third big development:
The State Department's Office of Inspector General is investigating the special internal panel that probed the Benghazi terror attack for the State Department, Fox News has confirmed.
The IG's office is said by well-placed sources to be seeking to determine whether the Accountability Review Board, or ARB -- led by former U.N. Ambassador Thomas Pickering and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen -- failed to interview key witnesses who had asked to provide their accounts of the Benghazi attacks to the panel.
The IG's office notified the department of the "special review" on March 28, according to Doug Welty, the congressional and public affairs officer of the IG's office.
This disclosure marks a significant turn in the ongoing Benghazi case, as it calls into question the reliability of the blue-ribbon panel that then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton convened to review the entire matter. Until the report was concluded, she and all other senior Obama administration officials regularly refused to answer questions about what happened in Benghazi.
Since the ARB report was issued in December -- finding that "systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels" well below Clinton were to blame for the "inadequate" security at Benghazi -- Clinton and other top officials have routinely referred questioners to the conclusions of the board report. Now the methodology and final product of the ARB are themselves coming under the scrutiny of the department's own top auditor.
Long menacing bolts of lightning flashed, noisy rumbles of thunder rolled, but patriots unfurled the Gadsen flag above the Star of David, right next to a large beautiful American flag at the May Day Protest against Marco Rubio and his Gang of Eight's cruel immigration bill.
No one does a thunderstorm like Florida does, and she was in her glory Wednesday night. I haven't gotten that soaked, soaked to my skin, since I canoed the Des Plaines River in Illinois many years ago with a supervisor from the Big House in Joliet. Between rain drops he told me about the rough time prison doctors were having getting the colostomy bags in the sides of gay prisoners because their nether regions were not accepting the equipment, to put it mildly. So here I was along with many patriots standing in drenching rain with our signs unfurled telling Marco Rubio and his 854 ... Fox news and CBS' Sharyl Attkisson have been busy keeping the Benghazi story alive. They must have earned a special place on the Obama's administrations enemies list. This week the American People found out that John Kerry and the State Department are busy trying to silence Benghazi whistleblowers. The State Department, CIA and the Defense Department have been asked to permit attorneys representing witnesses with knowledge of the Benghazi attacks access to classified information. (2) In the manner of all Democrat regimes they are dragging their feet in hopes the American people will forget about this "incident." Barack Obama's only priority is to win the house in 2014 and the liberal press is doing everything to help.
"President Obama said he's unaware of the controversy", (1) and pled ignorance to the possibility of interference with people who want to tell the truth about the Benghazi murders. A senior State Department official has been threatened ... Continue Reading:The Scandal That Will Not Die
Give the liberals credit, they know their voters are morons and they never make the mistake of treating them as anything else.
Democrat elected officials know they don't ever really have to make sense when they address their half-witted supporters. They only have to say something or do something, anything, and the media will praise them for their "honesty and courage." Nobody ever questions what is "courageous" about admitting you have cheated on your income tax, stole campaign contributions, ran a male brothel or sold a political appointment; the media makes all of that go away for Democrats.
When "the guy on TV" says a Democrat's explanation is enough to "move on" that's it; no further explanation is necessary.
Pentagon personnel responded to Breitbart News' report about court-martialing service members who share their faith in the military, which the Pentagon confirmed on May 1, and the Air Force on May 2 separately confirmed a second time.
Now the Pentagon claims the opposite. But these new statements instead only compound the problem, as the Pentagon's new definitions for terms squarely contradict what the dictionary says those terms mean. All this has taken place as the first flag officer in the military has stepped forward to defy the unconstitutional policy.
It is the man, not the gun, that is capable of committing acts of evil. That was the message Glenn Beck conveyed throughout Saturday's highly anticipated keynote speech at the 2013 NRA Convention. He made that case using storied antique firearms as he taught America's captivating history through guns. Make no mistake, the history behind some of the guns Beck handled on stage will blow you away. Get the highlights and connect to the videoHERE.
Watch the mainstream media's coverage of the 2013 NRA Convention - if there is any - and you will almost certainly not meet any of the gun owners TheBlaze is about to introduce you to. Despite the stereotypes thrown around about gun owners in America, we found a remarkably diverse, patriotic crowd at the event in Houston. See the "Faces of the NRA"HERE.
While the NRA convention is about so much more than firearms, in the end the gathering is generally known for one thing: guns. The floor of the convention is littered with old, new, black, and blue ones. And believe it or not, we even found what we were told was likely the most valuable and expensive gun at the convention. The price? Upwards of $500,000. See the half-million dollar gun and 17 other very interesting weaponsHERE.

The moral of this story? Thugs should think twice before they mess with victims" they assume are defenselessotherwise they might earn themselves a special forces-level whipping. The Obama administration has politicized the Benghazi scandal from day 1, protecting Obama from exposure of his nonfeasance, creating an alternative universe in which the attack on the consulate grew out of a "spontaneous" protest, and kicking the whole thing past the election. On Friday Steve Hayes kicked off the latest round of exposures with his excellent Weekly Standard article "The Benghazi talking points."Now come Bob Schieffer and Rep. Darrell Issa to give us the previously undisclosed views of Greg Hicks, our former deputy chief of mission/chargé d'affaires in Libya. CBS News reports on the story here. Mickey Kaus comments on the statement we received on Friday from Senator Rubio's office (posted here) in defense of the Gang of Eight immigration bill:
Rubio: Illegals will pay fines or be deported! Ambassador of Amnesty Marco Rubio argues on Powerline-or rather, "Marco Rubio" argues, since the words are attributed only to his "office"**-that critics overstate the number of new immigrants who would be added by his legalization bill:
There are approximately 11 million illegals currently in the US, and many of them won't be eligible for legalization (because they haven't been here long enough, don't pass background checks, can't afford the fines, etc.) and will have to be deported. [emphasis added]
Really? We're going to deport a significant chunk of the 11 million-and not just because they've arrived since 2011 (the cutoff), but because they don't scratch together enough money (initially, $1,000) for fines? Would Sen. Schumer and Cecilia Munoz go along with this characterization of the legislation? Answer: no. It's not going to happen. Rubio-and his "office"-are cementing his new national reputation as a dissembler. ...
P.S.: Even if Rubio really intended to deport "many' of the 11M, that wouldn't work. Why? Because the individuals who know they would be deported-e.g. they came here too recently, they have criminal records or they don't want to pay the fine-will simply not come forward. They-the "many"-will just stay in the shadows where they are now. That means the bill will not come close to achieving its alleged purpose, which is to bring all current illegals out into the open.
P.P.S.: And how are these mass deportations going to help Republicans woo Latino voters?
What's the alternative? Don't pretend you're suddenly going to deport millions of people. Move to stop the flow of new illegals. When that's accomplished-e.g. through E-verify, a fence, and a visa-checking system-and when those enforcement mechanisms have survived court challenges, then try to bring illegals out of the shadows. At that point, some years down the road, with the future illegal flow cut off (and "chain migration" curtailed), you can afford to be honest about how mean you are willing to be. Some people will still have to be deported, but not for failing to pay a fine or for losing their job and slipping below 125% of the poverty line (as allegedly would happen under Rubio's plan).
Kaus's comment on the Rubio post has a few links that I haven't inserted and a footnote I have omitted. Please go to Kaus's Daily Caller post for them.
Either Hinderaker is too busy right now, or we're in that in-between period like we suffer after the Super Bowl and before baseball opening day when we only have the NBA to tide us through for sports, but there's clearly a dearth of coverage of beauty pageants on Power Line right now. Thank goodness for the NRA, which has been holding its convention this weekend. Victoria's Secret Gun?
And in news you can use, here's a helpful demonstration of the bra holster:
On Friday morning President Obama spoke to an audience of young Mexicans at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. The White House has posted the text of the speech here.
Obama is full of praise for Mexico. He "celebrates Mexico's ancient civilizations and their achievements in arts and architecture, medicine and mathematics." He praises Mexico's modern art. He appreciates Mexico's blend of cultures and traditions. At greater length he also lauds Mexico's political and economic evolution. In Mexico he sees a country full of dynamic progress.
Obama's praise of Mexico contrasts with his attitude toward the United States. "Some Americans only see the Mexico that is depicted in sensational headlines of violence and border crossings." That criticism is leavened by an acknowledgement that "some Mexicans think that America disrespects Mexico, or thinks that America is trying to impose itself on Mexican sovereignty, or just wants to wall ourselves off." Obama asserts that "it's time for us to put the old mind-sets aside," but he brought his old mindset to Mexico City. (Incidentally, it's time for us to put the dash in "mindset" aside.)
Obama expresses his understanding that "much of the root cause of violence that's been happening here in Mexico, for which many so Mexicans have suffered, is the demand for illegal drugs in the United States." And that's not all: "[W]e also recognize that most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States." In this context Obama omitted any mention of Fast & Furious. While he was interested in criticizing the United States, he wasn't much interested in self-criticism.
Obama recognizes a responsibility not to address illegal immigration into the United States directly: "We recognize we've got work to do on security issues, but we also recognize our responsibility - as a nation that believes that all people are created equal - we believe it's our responsibility to make sure that we treat one another with dignity and respect. And this includes recognizing how the United States has been strengthened by the extraordinary contributions of immigrants from Mexico and by Americans of Mexican heritage." Here Obama conferred the highest praise that resides in his lexicon: "[W]ithout the strong support of Latinos, including so many Mexican Americans, I would not be standing today as President of the United States. (Applause.) That's the truth." Thank you, Mexico!
Which brings Obama to a discussion of immigration reform before an audience of young Mexicans. Recall, while on this subject, that Mexico itself is a country that allows essentially no legal immigration. However evolved Mexico is now, it hasn't reached the highest stage of evolution toward which we are tending. Obama criticizes current American immigration law as insufficiently family friendly (!) and insufficiently hospitable to those here illegally in our midst (!):
And so given that is Americas [sic] heritage, given that we share a border with Mexico, given ties that run back generations, it is critical that the United States recognize the need to reform our immigration system - (applause) - because we are a nation of laws, but we're also a nation of immigrants. Like every nation we have a responsibility to ensure that our laws are upheld. But we also know that, as a nation of immigrants, the immigration system we have in the United States right now doesn't reflect our values. It separates families when we should be reuniting them. It's led to millions of people to live in the shadows. It deprives us of the talents of so many young people - even though we know that immigrants have always been the engine of our economy, starting some of our greatest companies and pioneering new industries.
This is a bizarre and yet characteristic Obama speech. When Jean Yarbrough renders her (harsh) judgment on Theodore Roosevelt in Theodore Roosevelt and the American Tradition, she tempers it with an acknowledgement of Roosevelt's rejection of hyphenated-Americanism, Roosevelt's insistence upon assimilation, "[a]nd, finally, Roosevelt's patriotism and love of country[.]" Although Obama draws inspiration from TR, Obama's Mexico City speech really sharpens the contrast with him.
UPDATE: I should add that David Martosko (Daily Mail) and Nile Gardiner (Telegraph) have good comments on Obama's Mexico City speech. Where is the American press?
Visiting the site of the William F. Buckley, Jr. Program at Yale to watch Professor Donald Kagan's farewell lecture, I found the video below of George Will's lecture to the group this past January. The lecture provides a short course in the Constitution and the revolt of the Progressives against it, from Wilson to TR and FDR, to LBJ and to Obama. It is learned and vivid, with some pungent quotes from prominent authorities including the late James Q. Wilson along the way. Charles Kesler provides a tour of the horizon to similar effect in I Am The Change: Barack Obama and the Crisis of Liberalism. I could quibble with a point or two that Will makes, particularly with respect to the Machiavellian roots of the Constitution, but I would prefer to say only that this lecture is well worth your time. It is excellent.
So what should be our theme of the week? Maybe how the White House is still passing Benghazi all the time? Or how the media is still (fill in the blank)? Or perhaps the story about the heroism of apparently the first-ever person to come out publicly as gay?
Why don't we start with the unintentionally revealing photo that the Wall Street Journal ran yesterday about the annual shareholder meeting of UBS, where a protestor wore a shirt that reads "Always Give 100% at Work." But blow up the picture and notice the subtitles on the shirt: "12% Monday, 32% Tuesday," etc, adding up to 100 percent by the end of the week. That really does express the effectual truth of the Occupy mentality doesn't it?
Good to see this Alex Jones guy, of the preposterous Infowars site, coming in for some smack. He and Piers Morgan really do deserve one another.
So who thought this was a good idea?

And since we're closing on a music theme, take in this short video of BowSmack (Mike Block and Tupic Mantilla), offering not simply the best cover of a Jackson Five tune ever, but the most imaginative setting:
Last month Time's Joe Klein decried the Obama administration's "incompetence" implementing Obamacare. This week Klein expressed relief in an "Exclusive" report.
In his "Exclusive" Klein praised the administration for streamlining the complex 21-page online Obamacare application to a mere three pages. Klein called it "a spiffy, new three-page application for individuals (find it here)" (footnote omitted). He added: "There will be a seven-page application for families (11 including the appendix), but even that one will be far better designed than the initial effort (find it here)."
Obama bragged about the new, improved version at his 100-days press conference this week: "We put together initially an application form for signing up for participation in the exchanges that was initially about 21 pages long. Immediately everybody sat around the table and said, 'Well, this is too long. . . . Let's streamline this thing.' So we've cut what was a 21-page form now down to a form that's about three pages for an individual, a little more than that for a family."
That draft form released in March was designed not for an individual but for a family of six, including four children. The new "family" form, which runs seven (numbered) pages, includes paperwork for just two people. It instructs applica[nt]s, "If you have more than two people to include, make a copy of Step 2: Person 2 (pages 4 and 5) and complete." Thus, eight pages were shaved off of the new form - two pages for each of the four children no longer included.
The administration also creatively took four pages from the 21-page draft and made them into "appendices." Two separate pages requesting information about an applicant's existing employer-provided insurance have been moved to Appendix A, so they are no longer included in the seven numbered pages (or the three pages the president cited for the individual form). The same is true for the page that requests further information from American Indians and Alaska Natives and the page that allows applicants to authorize to discuss the application with the government on their behalf - now Appendix B and Appendix C, respectively.
And the first page of the application, which includes basic information and answers to frequently asked questions, now has no page number, taking another page off the official count without actually altering anything.
The family of six for whom the president said 21 pages was "too long," then, would still have to fill out the seven pages included in the new application, plus two additional pages for each of four children, plus the five additional pages. That's a total of 20 pages - not as short, or as simple, as the administration would have us believe.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall as the geniuses of the Obama administration sat around the table deliberating how to "streamline" the 21-page form and peddle the story of the new streamlined application as an "Exclusive" to Time. Klein having heralded its coming, the new, improved Obamacare application was ready for its rollout at the press conference (video below).
Yale Sterling Professor Donald Kagan retires from the faculty at the end of this academic year. The author of a classic four-volume history of the Peloponnesian War and other formidable works of learning, he is an old-fashioned scholar and teacher. To say he has had a long and distinguished career at Yale understates matters considerably.
Why did Professor Kagan give the Buckley Program the honor of hosting his farewell lecture? The Buckley Program was founded by a group of Yale undergraduates in 2010 under the guidance of Professor Kagan, and the Buckley Program has now posted the video of Professor Kagan's farewell lecture. The lecture proper begins in the video below, part 1 of 4, at about 7:30, following introductions by Harry Graver '14 and Charles Hill. The succeeding videos of the lecture follow automatically. (Other videos of Buckley Program events are accessible here, including a recent debate between David Brooks and Jay Nordlinger.) I invite you to sit back and enjoy Professor Kagan's farewell lecture.
Barack Obama's comments about guns in Mexico today demonstrated a curious lack of self-awareness. "[M]ost of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States." So the violence perpetrated by Mexican drug cartels is our fault? That seemed to be the implication. But obviously, if there were not a single firearm in the U.S., the drug cartels would be just as well armed as they are today.
But that is almost beside the point. How could anyone utter those words without thinking about Fast and Furious? Obama also said, "So we'll keep increasing the pressure on gun traffickers who bring illegal guns into Mexico. We'll keep putting these criminals where they belong: behind bars." Well, when we're not sliding them thousands of firearms on purpose, that is.
I don't know how Mexicans viewed Obama's remarks, but Michael Ramirez wasn't impressed:
This strikes me as one more in a long series of instances where Obama believes that through sheer denial, he can inhabit an alternative universe, and perhaps convince the rest of us to inhabit it too.
Israeli planes reportedly entered Syrian air space today and bombed Syrian targets. The targets are said to be one or more weapons facility.
It isn't clear whether, assuming the veracity of the reports, the targets were chemical weapons facilities. But if the Syrian government has used chemical weapons, bombing chemical weapons facilities is an appropriate response, for it diminishes the chemical weapons capability of both the Assad regime and its possible (probable?) Islamist successor.
Any additional military response to the crossing of President Obama's imaginary red line would be unwise. If we choose to tilt the Syrian battlefield in favor of rebel forces, we should do so based on a careful weighing of interests - primarily our own - not on an assessment of the extent to which Assad's actions are dastardly.
One of my favorite scenes from Dirty Harry (the first film to "talk back to liberalism," as the late great Richard Grenier put it) is when Clint Eastwood's Inspector Callahan meets his new and unwanted partner, Chico Gonzales:
Callahan: "You from around here?"
Gonzales: "Yeah, but I went to school at San Jose State."
Callahan: "Just what I need, a college boy. . . Get your degree?"
Gonzales: "Sociology."
Callahan: "Sociology? Oh, you'll go far. . . That's if you live."
If this scene were remade today, no doubt Gonzales would major in gender and ethnic studies, and Callahan would say, "Oh, you'll go far . . . That's if you can get a job."
This came to mind from two items this week about San Jose State University, one involving some general lamosity connected to the ongoing deflation of the higher education bubble, and the second for which SJSU will receive Power Line's coveted Green Weenie Award. First, the philosophy department at San Jose State sent off an indignant letter to Harvard University's legendary Michael Sandel. Brief digression: How legendary is Sandel? Tom Friedman writes columns about "my good friend" Michael Sandel! So there. This line from a recent Friedman column is especially precious and could have come from the Friedman random column generator:
You see, I was picked up at Logan Airport by my old friend Michael Sandel, who teaches the famous Socratic, 1,000-student "Justice" course at Harvard, which is launching March 12 as the first humanities offering on the M.I.T.-Harvard edX online learning platform. When he met me at the airport I saw he was wearing some very colorful sneakers.
We'll have to put off finding out about Sandel's nifty sneakers for some other time, as well as Sandel's induction in the Power Line 100 Best Professors list, as his course is actually pretty good, for the edX course Friedman swoons over here is what has SJSU's philosophers feeling very un-Socratic. It seems the administration at SJSU wants the philosophy department to use Sandel's online course, and the philosophy department rebelled, telling Sandel, "The move to MOOCs comes at great peril to our university. We regard such courses as a serious compromise of quality of education and, ironically for a social justice course, a case of social injustice. . . Professors who care about public education should not produce products that will replace professors, dismantle departments and provide a diminished education for student in public universities." (Emphasis added-ponder that particular clause for a bit, and see if you can stifle your laughter.)
You can read the entire five-page letter here, but it could have been one short paragraph that read simply, "Hey-you're going to put us out of a job!" Sandel, being a good liberal, has expressed his sympathy, writing back, "The worry that the widespread use of online courses will damage departments in public universities facing budgetary pressures is a legitimate concern that deserves serious debate, at edX and throughout higher education. The last thing I want is for my online lectures to be used to undermine faculty colleagues at other institutions." I doubt Sandel is going to give in to the flat earthers and pull the online course, however. What would Tom Friedman write about if he did? But whatever you do, don't miss Roger Kimball's guffaws over this at PJ Media. He calls it "this week's funniest headline."
But the fun and games at San Jose State aren't confined to the philosophy department. The department of meteorology and climate science recently received a copy of the Heartland Institute's new book, The Mad, Mad, Mad World of Climatism by Steve Goreham, and rather than read the book, throw it in the recycle pile, or critique it, two members of the faculty, including the department chair, decided to . . . burn it. And showing that their degrees apparently came from the Anthony Weiner School of Twitterdom, they decided to post photographs of themselves setting the book on fire on their department's website. As they explained on their site:
This week we received a deluge of free books from the Heartland Institute {this or this }. The book is entitled "The Mad, Mad, Made World of Climatism". Shown above, Drs. Bridger and Clements test the flammability of the book.
The photo, shown below has since been scrubbed, but WattsUpWithThat has the screen cap and the full story. Curious: just what is the carbon footprint of burning a book they dislike? Did they get a permit from the local air pollution control district?
So, this week Power Line is pleased to give an All-Purpose Global Weenie Award to multiple departments of San Jose State University, where they could clearly use an Inspector Callahan figure in the provost's office.
President Obama is at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, where he spoke today to Future Democrats of America (i.e., young Mexicans) about American immigration reform, among other pressing subjects such as gun control. Speaking to the FDA, Obama didn't directly address Operation Fast & Furious, but he did explain the rationale behind his refusal to enforce current immigration law (though he didn't put it quite that way). Let's just say that Obama has not heeded John Hinderaker's call for the discontinuance of chain migration:
That's why I acted to lift the shadow of deportation from DREAMers-young people brought to the United States as children. And that's why I'm working with our Congress to pass common sense immigration reform. Reform that continues to strengthen border security and strengthen legal immigration, so citizens don't have to wait years to bring their family to the United States. Reform that holds everyone accountable- so immigrants get on the right side of the law and so immigrants are not exploited and abused. Most of all, reform that gives millions of undocumented individuals a pathway to earn their citizenship. And I'm optimistic that-after years of trying-we're finally going to get this done.
Close readers will note that neither Obama nor his speechwriters have mastered subject/verb agreement ("violence and impunity is not acceptable"), but even I would concede that that's not the most troubling aspect of the speech.
Byron York challenges the idea that supposedly is driving the Republican Party's cave-in on amnesty - the notion that the Hispanic vote was a key element in Mitt Romney's defeat. Byron shows that President Obama would have won the election even if Romney had captured a majority of the Hispanic vote.
Republicans are barking up the wrong tree in pandering to Hispanic voters. First, as Byron indicates, they don't seem to be a major reason why the Party is losing. Second, there is little reason to think the Party can win a substantially larger share of the Hispanic vote without departing significantly from conservative principles. Third, a conservative party certainly won't be able to make inroads among the, say, 20 million new poor, low-information voters that the Schumer-Rubio legislation would create.
The path to Republican success runs not through Hispanic voters, but rather through the millenials and their successors. They won't be easy for a conservative party to win over either, but at least the task is imaginable, especially given the economic peril associated with the other party's policies.
The Weekly Standard has posted an advance online copy of Steve Hayes's "The Benghazi talking points" from the new issue, and Bill Kristol has sent out an email alerting us to the article. Steve reports:
Even as the White House strove last week to move beyond questions about the Benghazi attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2012, fresh evidence emerged that senior Obama administration officials knowingly misled the country about what had happened in the days following the assaults. The Weekly Standard has obtained a timeline briefed by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence detailing the heavy substantive revisions made to the CIA's talking points, just six weeks before the 2012 presidential election, and additional information about why the changes were made and by whom.
As intelligence officials pieced together the puzzle of events unfolding in Libya, they concluded even before the assaults had ended that al Qaeda-linked terrorists were involved. Senior administration officials, however, sought to obscure the emerging picture and downplay the significance of attacks that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans. The frantic process that produced the changes to the talking points took place over a 24-hour period just one day before Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, made her now-famous appearances on the Sunday television talk shows. The discussions involved senior officials from the State Department, the National Security Council, the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the White House.
Please read the whole thing. Steve points out that there is more we have to learn about the story, but he has begun to fill out yet one more case of the Obama administration's thoroughgoing dishonesty. Steve shows that on a number of fronts in the administration there ought to be hell to pay.
I've struggled with my weight ever since I quit smoking thirty years ago, going up and down 30 pounds several times. All I can tell you is that it's a helluva lot easier going up than it is coming down, though you probably already knew that.
Five months ago I took up the cues offered occasionally by Glenn Reynolds to the work of science writer Gary Taubes. Glenn had linked to Taubes's book Why We Get Fat. Taubes recommends a low-carb/no-carb diet, as some of the popular diet books apparently do, both for reasons of weight control and overall health.
I reported on my experience following a low carb/no carb diet after 25 days in "Dietetically incorrect." I have now been following an unmethodical version of the diet for five months: no bread, no sandwiches, no pasta, no pizza, no fruit, no sugar, no desserts. I haven't eliminated the sugar from salad dressing or the beans from chili, but otherwise have tried to avoid obvious sources of carbohydrates. When hungry between meals I have snacked on cashews or cheese.
As of today, I am down around 25 pounds. Eliminating desserts from my diet and overcoming the craving for them after meals seem like an accomplishment, but I am also eating substantially less than I did before the diet, without trying. One of the attractions of the diet to me was that it doesn't depend on reducing portions.
Other than the weight loss, lethargy in the morning is the most noticeable change that I feel. I haven't figured that out yet.
The first 14 days of the diet made me feel like I did when I quit smoking 30 years ago. I missed desserts. I craved them after every meal. I was depressed not to be able to look forward to them.
After 14 days the cravings vanished, seemingly miraculously, and it has been almost no effort to stay on the wagon for the past four months since my initial post. After that initial post on the subject, incidentally, I read Gary Taubes's (long) New York Times Magazine article "Is sugar toxic?" It "feels" to me like the logical extension of Taubes's dietary writings. If you are struggling with weight issues, Taubes is worth checking out. (I also cited some critical pieces on Taubes in my initial post.) I am grateful to InstaPundit for sending me in his direction.
Taubes is a sober writer. I don't think he is ever intentionally humorous in his writings on diet. For the humorous take we go (as I did in my initial post) to Woody Allen, who gives us something like the condensed version of the Taubes doctrine in his great comedy Sleeper (clip below).

Why Liberals Hate Men Who Won't Give Up Their Guns
May 04, 2013 12:43 pm I don't know why many Americans on the political left are embracing a system that has persistently failed throughout history. U.S. Army sacrifices ANOTHER combat hero to Muslims
How can America hope to win the war being waged upon it by resurgent Islam without being able to name the enemy?
How can it afford to destroy the careers of the very combat officers it will need to wage that war, because Muslim activists complain they are offended?
Here's how the politically correct top brass rewards heroes ...
It was just a month ago MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry, appearing in a promotional video, argued that we Americans have to "break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents" and recognize that "kids belong to whole communities."
Well, here's a court case that demonstrates Harris-Perry's vision of statist parenthood in action.
Two things are immediately clear: When everyone owns the children, the parents don't ... and a society that has crossed this line has no intention of being constrained by requirements of impartial courts.

So I guess you've heard. Fading, 34 year-old NBA free agent Jason Collins has been declared a hero for publicly announcing that he digs dudes. Well, it's about time! Used to be all a guy had to do was die at Omaha Beach or some other such nonsense. The imperialist USA is finally seeing some major progress.
What callous soul wouldn't be moved by this youngish man's gallantry? Who wouldn't shudder at his sacrifice?
By this time in the Reagan administration, which began with a severe economic crisis, the economy was booming and optimism was rampant. At this point in the Clinton administration, the economy was strong and Americans were pleased.
By this time in Barack Obama's second term ... well, that's a different story.
His I-killed-Osama-bin-Laden bounce is clearly over!
It is critical to the BSA that you support them today!
May 3, 2013
Dear ##FirstName[AFA Supporter]##,
Literally, the very character, integrity and future of the Boy Scouts of America are at stake.
On May 23, 1,400 delegates to the annual BSA meeting will be asked tovote on a resolution that will allow openly homosexual and transgender teenage boys to join the ranks of scouting.
Make no mistake, the current aggression from gay activists and liberal groups directed at these BSA delegates is relentless. The very core values of 100 years of BSA history is under attack.

It is very important that you forward this alert to your friends and family members.
Sincerely,
Tim Wildmon, President American Family Association

Next week Senators will begin to debate the "Gang of Eight's" comprehensive immigration bill. Heritage President Jim DeMint has said the bill is "unfair, it costs too much, and it's going to make the problem worse."
The infographic below explains some of the major problems with a "comprehensive" approach to immigration reform.
Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint will appear Sunday on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos. He plans to discuss Heritage's research on the cost of granting amnesty to illegal immigrants under the Gang of Eight proposal.
News reports that suspected Boston bombers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev received generous welfare benefits draw "attention to the policy principle that immigrants should be net contributors to the government and society and should not be a fiscal burden on American society," The Heritage Foundation's Rachel Sheffield argues.
As ABC News reports, the time Tamerlan was receiving state aid "coincides with the years Tamerlan Tsarnaev reportedly became more radicalized. He was interviewed by the FBI in 2011 after Russia flagged Tsarnaev for his potentially dangerous views." At the time of the bombing, neither of the brothers was receiving benefits.
President Obama is in Mexico discussing immigration, trade and education. It would seem as though he left something critical out of his agenda: illegal drugs.
"Mortality statistics indicate that drug-related deaths now exceed auto fatalities in the U.S.," The Heritage Foundation's Ray Walser explains. He points to a "spectrum of issues related to the harm done by drug usage. They range from state-side violence among traffickers, gangbangers, and dealers to drug-influenced auto fatalities and increasing abuse of prescription drugs."
Yet President Obama doesn't want to talk about it. In December, he claimed that there were "bigger fish to fry" than enforcing federal drug laws.
Senators return to Washington next week to debate the Gang of Eight's comprehensive immigration bill. Heritage President Jim DeMint has said the bill is "unfair, it costs too much, and it's going to make the problem worse." We've put together an infographic that explains some of the major problems with a "comprehensive" approach to immigration reform. Forward this to a friend to share these concerns.
This is our spoof of a new anti-gun sign by Shepard Fairey, who is also known as the artist behind the famous Obama "Hope" poster.
That the anti-NRA poster looks Orwellian is not a coincidence. Fairey probably believes he has a spiritual channel directly to George Orwell. But Orwell advocated gun ownership and even left us this powerful quote: "That rifle on the wall of the labourer's cottage or working class flat is the symbol of democracy. It is our job to see that it stays there."
PC and the NBA By L. Brent Bozell III Like many media companies, ESPN has made "respectful debate" and "diversity" into antonyms. "Diversity" doesn't mean "diversity of opinions." It means the tyranny of forced agreement or forced silence.
The Left's Sick Fetish for Cop-Killing Radicals By Michelle Malkin There's a stomach-turning segment of the American population that sees surviving Boston bomber suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev as a romantic maverick. Fringe, you say? Think again. The fetish for cop-killing fugitives and cop-hating radicals is a mainstay of Hollywood, academia, the liberal media and Democratic Party circles.
Less is More By Rich Galen After a lot of talk and promises, President Obama is one pick away from filling out his Cabinet-level team for his second term. So how's that diversity thing going?

Green jet fuel only costs $59 a gallon
The term 'green' jet fuel is a bit of an oxymoron, but that's not stopping someone from trying to make a buck - ok, a lot of bucks - off the green movement. Regular jet fuel goes for under $4 a gallon - this green jet fuel goes for the low low price of $59 a gallon. Why aren't airlines jumping all over this? Glenn reacts on radio today.

Job app for Canada's CBC: any race (except caucasian) may apply
Glenn read quite an interesting ad played by the Canadian government during their children's broadcast on CBC asking for anyone of any race (except caucasian) apply.
