Guess where Syria's chemical weapons originate
General sounds alarm on nation gassing rebels, civilians
Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely says he has confirmation that Syrian forces have used chemical weapons against rebel forces and civilians, and those weapons are likely stockpiles received from Iraq prior to the U.S.-led invasion 10 years ago.
Vallely has met twice in the region with military commanders for the Free Syrian Army, which he describes as the largest and much more moderate faction among the rebels, which also include elements of al-Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood. He also gets regular reports from a Canadian medical team. Vallely told WND that team is certain that a chlorine gas weapon was used in recent strikes.
"From what I received from the Canadian medical team who works out of Aleppo is that is was chlorine and that what you saw were the reactions on those videos that were put out within the last week," Vallely said. "The chlorine, the choking, the skin, depending on the density of the chlorine will cause skin irritation. If it's mixed with other types of gases too, then it could have an even more enhanced effect on the human body, not only breathing but on the skin."
Vallely believes the chemical weapons are clearly the work of the Assad regime and that the regime will try to pin the blame on the rebels. He said this is not the first time that the beleaguered government has turned WMD on its own people and that he has evidence of a similar attack last summer.
"We had photos and pictures of that which I provided the Defense Department as well as other people in our intelligence organizations," he said.
But Vallely's more stunning revelation is that he is virtually certain that Syria is in possession of Saddam Hussein's old arsenal of weapons of mass destruction and some of those may be on display in this civil war.
What was missed in last night's "Vote-A-Rama" is that the U.S. Senate approved the Keystone Pipeline, with 17 Democrats joining Republicans in passing the measure, 62-37.
The Keystone amendment is non-binding, as the Obama Administration has the final say over its approval, but last night's vote was a strong sign that the Keystone Pipeline enjoys broad bipartisan support on Capitol Hill and that the Obama Administration's opposition might be wearing thin.
The Washington Post points out that the Democrats who joined Republicans are all electorally vulnerable:
The 17 Democrats who voted yes included every single possibly vulnerable incumbent facing reelection next year, from 34-year veteran Baucus to first-term Sen. Mark Begich (Alaska).
Perhaps more importantly, Sen. Michael Bennet (Colo.), who chairs the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, voted for the resolution. Bennet is not up for re-election until 2016, but his post requires him to raise money from the wealthy liberal community that is highly opposed to the pipeline.
Additionally, a crop of Democrats who survived difficult reelections in 2012 - Sens. Bob Casey (Pa.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Bill Nelson (Fla.) and Jon Tester (Mont.) - all supported the GOP Keystone amendment.

Call To Action
Historic March for Marriage
On March 26th, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Perry case, which will determine if Proposition 8 - the citizens initiative approved by the people of California in 2008 to protect marriage - is constitutional or not. More importantly, the question of same-sex "marriage" and the right of Americans to protect marriage will be decided.
It is imperative that political leaders, the media, and the culture see that we care about protecting marriage enough to stand up and march for it.
The March is being organized by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) alongside a broad coalition of pro-family organization, state partners, African-American, Latino, Catholic and Protestant leaders. Speakers include Gary Bauer (American Values), Bishop Harry Jackson, Dr. Robert George (Manhattan Declaration), Penny Nance (Concerned Women for America) and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone.
Here's the schedule of events for the March on Tuesday, March 26th:
8:30am - Gather at the National Mall location between 10th Street and 12th Street NW & between Madison Drive NW and Jefferson Drive SW
9:30am - March to Supreme Court and then return to the National Mall location.
11:00am - 1:00pm - Rally begins at National Mall location.

We invite Churches to hold memorial services and to educate their people on the dignity of every human life, despite any disability or disease with which that life may be afflicted.
We invite educational institutions to help dispel the myths and inaccuracies about Terri's life and death, and to contribute to our society's debate regarding the rights of the disabled by providing accurate, factual information and mature reflection on the ethical demands of caring for the weak and vulnerable.
We invite all people to use the resources on this website and to help us continue to draw good out of the sad and tragic way in which Terri was treated.

We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:

John Guandolo - Former FBI agent and one of America's leading authorities on the Muslim Brotherhood and its inner workings in America. Guandolo spoke at our conference in 2011 and received rave reviews from conference attendees!
Ezra Levant - Canadian lawyer, author, newspaper columnist with Sun Media, and former publisher of the Western Standard. Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!

It will again feature our very popular Capitol Hill Awards Luncheon and our signature gala banquet-and of course, our Legislative Briefing, where Members of Congress will brief you on various issues and answer your questions.

2013 RedState Gathering -- Early Bird Special
Dear RedStater,
We announced earlier this week that we'll be headed to New Orleans the first weekend in August for this year's RedState Gathering. As a member of our RedState family, we'd like to extend exclusive Early Bird registration and pricing to you (just use the promo code EARLYBIRD on the registration page).
The 2013 RedState Gathering will be held August 2-3 at the Westin Canal Place in New Orleans, LA. We'll have two full days of speakers and activities and you can expect a good mix of elected officials and potential candidates for the 2014 cycle (we'll keep you informed as additions are made).
The Gathering has always been a unique event, in that all speakers, even the most in-demand and influential, pay their own way and make their own travel arrangements. This helps keep our costs low, a savings we are happy to pass along to our conference attendees. Additionally, we strive to get you up close to the speakers, ask them to take your questions, and we take care of nearly all your meals during the conference. Bottom line: fewer frills, more thrills and access.
We are thrilled to once again be joined by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who will be hosting a reception for all attendees and appear at the Gathering podium as a keynote speaker. A huge hit in 2012, we're looking forward to Gov. Jindal playing an even larger role this year as he welcomes us to his home state.
Now, more than ever, true conservative activists must come together to exchange ideas and strategize for the future. That's what this year's Gathering is all about. We hope you'll join us.
P.S. Don't delay! You'll receive 20% off if you register today - just use the promo code EARLYBIRD. Click here.

Hi All - I just spoke w/ Lisa Lnancollas@aol.com (717 437 1327) who lives in Lewistown, Pa and is majorly involved in fighting the smart meters............and it's more than just electric, it's water, furnaces/ac's and wells too
We need to share this information. I asked her if she'd speak to groups in our area and she said yes, but would like to include Mike Reese who's written several bills that we want to get out of committee and approved:
2.signs in our yards saying NO SMART METERS......put them around like election signs
3.Let our State Reps know how you feel ie Warren Kampf....tell him you're in favor of the bills against smart meters
4.Do neighbor alerts........call your neighbors if you see trucks coming into the area
5.Write letters to the editors....remember if they get several letters, they're more likely to put at least one in.....educate the public
6.Prepare handouts
7.Send certified letter to electric company and get return receipt of name of person who signed for it
Be aware:
Water Smart Meters.........(IF YOU LET THEM IN, you're giving permission.) YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LET THEM IN
Well Smart Meters......are coming and will limit the amount of water you use.
If you get someone knocking on your door asking if you want to save money on your heat/ac, do not say yes or they'll put a clip on your unit that will limit your usage of air conditioning. The fan will work, but your usage will be CONTROLLED.
IF you get a new wall mount (thermostat & it may be required w/ a new ac unit because of the wiring) for your AC DO NOT GET ONE WITH A GPS in it........there is a cheaper model that has no GPS........ask questions BEFORE you start or consider any changes!!!!!!!!
Important Announcement from SFL
You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.
Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.
I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.
Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".
Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.
If you've been wanting an interesting, clearly written, how-to-manual for identifying and fighting UN Agenda 21, here it is. Agenda 21--All the information you need to understand what is happening in your town, why it's happening, who is behind it, and what you can do to stop it. BEHIND THE GREEN MASK: U.N. Agenda 21 is 172 pages of truth. Part history, part current events, part hand-to-hand combat, and part blueprint for keeping your freedom, this is one book that you'll put to work immediately. Boots on the ground and all hands on deck is the order of the day. Awareness is the first step in the Resistance.
Awareness about Agenda 21 is finally spreading throughout the country, due in no small part to your efforts. But knowing it is there isn't enough. Now we need to educate ourselves on how to combat it. That's where you come in.
American Policy Center has recently released a booklet that explains everything you need to know to start fighting back against sustainable programs both locally and nationally. The booklet is called Special Report: Agenda 21 and How to Stop It and is available in the APC store for only $5.95.
I wrote this 35 page booklet in order to give activists a succinct resource they can refer to if they suspect Agenda 21 or Sustainable Development is being implemented in their area. It includes my own research coupled with incredibly helpful graphics created by Carroll County, Maryland Commissioner Richard Rothschild.
In the booklet you will find answers to several roadblocks that grassroots anti-Agenda 21 activists often face, including a definition of property rights and "Resolution to Protect Citizens' Property Rights," which many concerned citizens are already using to tie the hands of power hungry politicians.
This booklet is a great resource for anyone interested in preserving their property rights. It includes all the information to put up a first line of defense and step by step instructions for how to proceed from there. If you face Agenda 21 or Sustainable development in your area or are simply concerned with the national fight this booklet is a must read.
P.S. - The American Policy Center store has recently updated our inventory to include everything you need to fight back against Agenda 21. The revamped catalogue includes the "Stop Agenda 21 Action Kit", which provides users with everything they need to know about Agenda 21 in their own living room, as well as ways to share it with other concerned activists and critical knowledge on how to fight back. The store also offers DVDs of past successful conferences and symposiums, books and articles that deal with the issues of sustainability and Agenda 21 and individually packaged manuals and workbooks to aid you in your activism. You don't need to look any farther than the American Policy Center Store for everything you need to combat Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development in your area.
It's time to opt out of the creepy federal data-mining racket.
By Michelle Malkin
Last week, I reported on the federal government's massive new student-tracking database, which was created as part of the nationalized Common Core standards scheme.
The bad news: GOP "leadership" continues to ignore or, worse, enable this Nanny State racket. (Hello, Jeb Bush.)
The good news: A grassroots revolt outside the Beltway bubble is swelling. Families are taking their children's academic and privacy matters out of the snoopercrats' grip and into their own hands. You can now download a Common Core opt-out form to submit to your school district, courtesy of the group Truth in American Education.
Parents caught off guard by the stealthy tracking racket are now mobilizing across the country. According to the
New York Daily News
, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, echoing parents across New York City, blasted the tracking database in a letter to government officials: "I don't want my kids' privacy bought and sold like this." This Wednesday, prompted by parental objections, Oklahoma state representatives unanimously passed House Bill 1989 - the Student Data Accessibility, Transparency and Accountability Act - to prohibit the release of confidential student data without the written consent of the student's parent or guardian. As I noted in last week's column, the national Common Core student database was funded with Obama stimulus money. Grants also came from the liberal Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (which largely underwrote and promoted the top-down Common Core curricular scheme). A division of the conservative Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. built the database infrastructure. A nonprofit startup, "inBloom, Inc.," evolved out of this strange-bedfellows partnership to operate the invasive database, which is compiling everything from health-care histories, income information, and religious affiliations to voting status, blood types, and homework completion.
And it gets worse. Research fellow Joy Pullmann at the Heartland Institute points to a February Department of Education report on its data-mining plans that contemplates the use of creepy student-monitoring techniques such as "functional magnetic resonance imaging" and "using cameras to judge facial expressions, an electronic seat that judges posture, a pressure-sensitive computer mouse and a biometric wrap on kids' wrists."
The DOE report exposes the big lie that Common Core is about raising academic standards. The report instead reveals Common Core's progressive designs to measure and track children's "competencies" in "recognizing bias in sources," "flexibility," "cultural awareness and competence," "appreciation for diversity," "empathy," "perspective taking, trust, [and] service orientation."
That's right. School districts and state governments are pimping out highly personal data on children's feelings, beliefs, "biases," and "flexibility" instead of doing their own jobs of imparting knowledge - and minding their own business. And yes, Republicans such as former Florida governor Jeb Bush continue to falsely defend the centralized Common Core regime as locally driven and non-coercive, while ignoring the database system's circumvention of federal student-privacy laws.
Why? Edu-tech nosybodies are using the Common Core assessment boondoggle as a Trojan horse to collect and crunch massive amounts of personal student data for their own social-justice or moneymaking ends. Reminder: Nine states have entered into contracts with inBloom: Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, and North Carolina. Countless other vendors are salivating at the business possibilities in exploiting public-school students.
Marxism in Education - The Infiltration of Our School Systems by the Common Core Standards
Details
Written by Terresa Monroe-Hamilton
Right Side News has been reporting on progressive education reformers and the Common Core Standards being implemented in our public schools across the nation. Here is an excellent article with videos detailing how the Obama Administration is requiring the public schools in your county through grants (bribes) to adopt Common Core Standards.
Bottom line: the Obama Administration is using your tax money to indoctrinate your children to a Marxist mindset. You can make a difference, as explained below the videos by downloading an OPT-OUT form and submitting that to your local school district.
Terresa Monroe-Hamilton, Noisy Room Blog
I caught Glenn Beck on The Blaze and his excellent showcasing of Obama's Common Core Standards that are now in 45 states, including my state of Idaho. Common Core is Marxism for children. It is state run propaganda and is meant to dumb down and control our little ones. It is evil and it has been a long time coming. Obama pushed it through slyly and quickly after coming into office, but I can tell you, this has been brewing since at least the 1990s.
A little background... When my children were in school in the 1990s, my husband and I requested to see the school curriculum for their school in Las Vegas, Nevada. We were refused and basically told we were too dumb to understand what the teachers were instructing our son and daughter in. The last straw came when they wanted to put my daughter in the second grade on Ritalin instead of disciplining her. I was pulled in front of four teachers and accused of not raising my daughter correctly, as well as basically being an abusive and stupid parent.
I promptly told these teachers that they could pound sand and pulled our children (our son was in third grade at the time) out of school that very same day. I left the Fortune 500 and home schooled both of them till high school and in retrospect, should have kept them out even then. My children could not do the simplest of math or read when we pulled them out. I tested them and started them all over again with the ABEKA home schooling system, which at the time, cost a great deal of money.
Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the Common Core State Standards.
Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."
If I Were the Devil - (BEST VERSION) by PAUL HARVEY audio restored
Yes, it's true: You can support ACT! for America-at no cost to you!An important message from Guy Rodgers, Executive Director
The next time you make an online purchase of almost anything, you could be helping ACT! for America-at no cost to you.
Sound too good to be true? It isn't.
All you have to do is sign up for "iGive"-a program that's been around since 1997.
The concept is as powerful as it is simple.
Every time an iGive member makes an online purchase at over 1,000 brand-name stores, a percentage of that purchase is donated to that person's charity of choice.
And with the holidays just around the corner, you could be helping ACT! for America with every gift you buy!
The concept isn't new. In the mid-1990s many supporters of non-profit organizations signed up with long distance telephone programs where a percentage of their bill was donated to their charity of choice.
But our investigation of iGive has convinced us that this program has an ease of use and sophistication that we find remarkable.
Imagine booking a hotel room on Orbitz-and having 1.6% of that purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
Or buying an Xbox at Best Buy-and having 1.2% of the purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
The same goes for buying merchandise at Amazon, Bath and Body Works, Advance Auto Parts, Game Stop, Kmart, Home Depot, Holiday Inn, Old Navy, NASCAR Superstore, Overstock.com, Mattel, J.C. Penney, Office Max, QVC, Radio Shack, Shoe Carnival, Pottery Barn-and on and on the list goes.
In other words, every time you make a purchase of merchandise you would buy anyway, you would be financially supporting ACT! for America!
All you have to do is log on below and follow the directions to create your account and download the iGive "button." (Note: downloading the "button" is key).
When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems.
So I spent hours researching.
I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.
And the more I dug, the more I liked what I saw. For instance, both of my tech support questions were responded to within 60 minutes. How often does THAT happen?
As you know from our Patriot Partner program, we're all about encouraging a lot of people to each do a little-to do something. When everyone does a little, together we accomplish a lot.
So consider what could happen.
If just 1% of ACT! for America members each purchased just $400 in merchandise in 2013, from all the available outlets, and the average percentage donated to ACT! was 1.5%, the total amount donated back to ACT! for America would be...
...$15,000. That's a lot of money, wouldn't you agree?
And if you were one of those ACT! for America members, it wouldn't cost you one thin dime to help ACT! for America receive $15,000.
If this idea really caught on, and eventually 5% of our members made purchases with iGive, that $15,000 could explode to $50,000, $75,000 or more!
What's more, that 1.5% figure might be low. Many of the merchants offer percentage donations that are much higher. One printer inkjet company I looked at offered 13%!
Every merchant website you visit tells you right at the top what percentage of your purchase price will be donated to ACT! for America.
Just think what we could accomplish with an extra $15,000, $50,000 or $75,000 in our fight against radical Islam!
One of the things I most wanted to know was their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Check it out for yourself. I confirmed the terms with a company representative. And I like what I learned. As security-conscious as I am, I have no hesitation using the service-and I'm already doing so.
I know there are many people out there who would love to support ACT! for America, or give more than they're giving, but in these tough economic times they simply can't.
Well, here's a way that everyone who believes in our mission can easily support what we're doing-at no cost to them.
It doesn't get any better than that.

Trouble in Cyprus
It Can Happen Here, Too
March 22, 2013
"The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence." --John Adams
The tiny Mediterranean island of Cyprus is currently mulling over its few available options to stave off financial collapse after a week of battles with the EU Central Bank caught much of the world's attention. Cyprus was in line for a €10 billion (euros) loan from Brussels, but the EU wouldn't help without a €5.8 billion guarantee from the Cypriot government. And thus was born the bright idea of confiscating a portion of private savings from Cypriot depositors to fund the guarantee. Think something similar can't happen here? Think again.
The original formula called for a one-time tax of 6.75 percent on savings between €20,000 and €100,000, and 9.9 percent on savings over €100,000, taken straight from bank accounts. Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades both claim they were blackmailed into accepting this plan by the EU, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Commission.
Predictably, the plan set off a run on banks and ATMs as depositors scrambled to move their money out of the government's reach; that forced bank closures. On Wednesday, however, the Cypriot parliament rejected the tax without a single vote in favor. Cyprus is now trying to rework the terms of the bailout while its banks remain shuttered.
Cyprus also sought aid from Russia, which has a disproportionately large amount of money in Cypriot savings accounts, but the latter nation withdrew any offer for help when talks didn't progress. The EU set a Monday deadline for a plan.
The EU argument for its unprecedented and outrageous idea to arbitrarily confiscate private savings is that Cyprus should take part in its own salvation. The EU also wants to tap into the country's large foreign savings pool. Thanks in part to lax anti-money laundering rules, 37 percent of the €70 billion in Cypriot banks is foreign-owned, and 60 percent of that belongs to Russia. Whatever excuses the EU comes up with, this tax on savings is unlikely to work. EU central bank bailouts -- and this would be its fifth -- are meant in part to shore up confidence in European markets. Plucking money out of private savings accounts by government fiat will do just the opposite, particularly when that savings is supposed to be insured by the very same government. If people don't believe their money is safe, then they will take it elsewhere. Or they may even take it out of circulation altogether by stuffing it under the proverbial mattress, or, worse still, not save money at all. This won't help the Cypriot economy or the larger European one, because banks rely on that cash to serve as capital for investors, thereby driving the engine of commerce.
An even scarier outcome of the Cypriot banking crisis is the possibility that similar events could happen here. Barack Obama is a faithful observer of how the Europeans handle their leviathan governments, and, like most leftists, he picked up on all their bad habits. He's built his entire presidency on "spreading the wealth around" and making the rich "pay their fair share." This kind of confiscatory policy is tailor-made for a statist who wants nothing more than to continuously expand the size of government.
Indeed, Fox News host Neil Cavuto noted, "While no one is taxing our bank holdings, thanks to ObamaCare, they are going after some of our other assets. Remember that 3.8 percent Medicare surtax on investment sales larger than a couple hundred grand. Surprised? The next time you try to sell your house, trust me, you'll be hitting the roof. I want you to think about that. A tax not on your income, earned or unearned, but your assets, what you have, what you own, your tangible assets. Homes here, bank accounts [in Cyprus]. Is there really a difference? No." Not only that, but the Federal Reserve continues its policy of quantitative easing, which causes inflation and has the same net effect as a withdrawal from your savings account.
U.S. debt far outweighs that of every European nation -- nations that are going for bailouts one after another. The U.S. government could seize 100 percent of the $9.3 trillion held in banks in the country and it would cover just over half of our total national debt. That $9.3 trillion would cover just two-and-a-half years of the federal budget.
Think about that the next time a politician laments the supposed disaster caused by reducing budget growth by $85 billion.
This will be the last Morning Jolt until April 1 (no April Fooling) -- I'll be out next week.
So, There's Bipartisan Consensus to Kill Some Obamacare Tax Hikes After All!
Remember back during the court cases over the individual mandate requiring people to purchase health insurance or pay a special tax, when Obamacare was a giant Jenga Tower? Remember when its backers argued that every part was necessary, and if you removed one part, the whole system would come tumbling down?
The Senate overwhelmingly passed a largely symbolic resolution calling for repeal of a 2.3 percent tax on medical device companies on Thursday, as more than 30 Democrats joined Republicans in approving it.
The tax helps to fund President Barack Obama's 2010 healthcare law. It applies to a range of medical products -- from bedpans to expensive heart devices --- many manufactured in the home states of the senators backing the repeal.
The Senate voted 79-20 to call for repeal of the tax, but the resolution is non-binding and will not change the levy. The symbolic measure will be attached to a non-binding budget measure drafted by Senate Democrats that is expected to pass on Friday.
Full repeal of the tax may be difficult to achieve, given its $30 billion price tag and the opposition of key Senate Democrats, including Majority Leader Harry Reid. . .
Nine Senate Democrats are signed up to back the symbolic amendment. More than a dozen Senate Democrats wrote to Reid last year seeking to delay the tax.
This will not be the last time we see a vote on this.
The Difficulties of Winning the Argument in a Fragmenting Culture
In her assessment of this year's CPAC, Melissa Clouthier laments:
Pardon me, but why are we kvetching over social issues when the nation is staggering under it's own indebted weight? It would be one thing if there seemed to be a reasoned, respectful, fact-based argument around some of these divisive issues, but no. Instead, the right is being treated to the same sort of shrieking emotionalism that one is used to getting from the left. The misinformation and loping strawmen arguments have been embarrassing to watch. Why are average Americans, trying pay their bills and scraping by, supposed to take the Right seriously? The Right certainly isn't acting like they care about how the average person is faring. For more on this read Ben Domenech's excellent piece on which issues should animate the Right.
Domenech's points about self-employed, home-business or contracting moms are indeed great. But beyond that, Clouthier hits on something important: whether the issues that inspire, drive, and excite the average conservative are the same as those that inspire, drive, and excite voters as a whole. And part of the problem may be that there may not be that much of an "average American" anymore.
Our electorate, and the culture, feel really fragmented right now. You can be in a bubble and not know it. It used to be if you wanted to know what was on everybody's mind, you watched the evening news and looked at the front page of the newspapers. Now to the extent these programs tell you what the "big news" and "big issues" are, they reveal what is on the mind of the rapidly aging audiences for those products; the rest of the population is scattered in a million different directions. There are very few moments where a lot of us are looking at the same place at the same time.
At its peak years of 1986 and 1987, The Cosby Show had an audience of 30.5 million people, out of a country of 240 million people -- meaning about 12 percent of the population were watching each week.
The top show last week was The Big Bang Theory, which had an audience of just under 16 million people -- in a country of about 314 million people -- meaning about 5 percent of the population were watching.
Every day, you can discover some little subculture that a lot of folks dabble in, and some folks can get completely wrapped up in:
There are 211 million video game players in the United States. For perspective, 130 million voted in last year's presidential election.
A site of "Bronies" -- grown men and women who are really into My Little Pony estimates that there are 7 to 12 million of them in the United states.
I don't begrudge any of those interests (okay, the Bronies are weird*) but the point is that there is no common popular culture anymore, which makes it particularly tough for conservatives to start influencing that culture. If we're Balkanizing into more and more niche subcultures, it's easier than ever to live in an unrepresentative bubble without ever realizing that you're in an unrepresentative bubble.
Mind you, the niche culture has been good for conservatives in a lot of ways. You could argue we've become a "niche" culture ourselves, with our own news channel (Fox News) and entertainment programming (24, the History Channel's The Bible series, Sarah Palin's reality show, some would argue Duck Dynasty) Sports heroes (Tim Tebow, Jeremy Lin), our own books, our own newspapers, magazines, web sites, morning newsletters...
But by becoming the well-cultivated niche, we've become this acquired taste, not always easily appreciated by newcomers and outsiders. Things that we think are absolutely vital, like the debt or Benghazi, end up being ignored by large swaths of the electorate, while things that seem absolutely unimportant to us, like the latest celebrity news, are given enormous attention and focus by millions of citizens who have a vote just like the rest of us. (Right now on YouTube, a guy getting punched by a street performer has 11 million views in three days. Remember, that's about two-thirds of the audience of the most-watched broadcast television show last week.)
There are topics that we're pretty sure are largely irrelevant to the voting electorate at large, but the speakers at CPAC go on at length about them because (a) they think they're important regardless of the public's attention and/or (b) they're convinced their issues and views are popular, because everywhere they go, they encounter like-minded folks who agree with that assessment.
If you are lucky enough to find a way to keep your favorite childhood joy in your life as an adult, good for you. Some kids who grew up loving Star Wars ended up working in Hollywood, I'm sure almost every professional athlete loved their sport as a child, and so on. But as one of Harry's commenters pointed out, "not everyone has the luxury of holding onto their childhood." Some people had to grow up and put their favorite toys aside and become farmers and lawyers and accountants and doctors and parents.
Some argued that when television was an endless succession of Friends clones, that our culture was celebrating an extended adolescence -- the carefree dorm-room life extending well into your 20s. Seeing grown adults almost obsessively embrace something designed for children exacerbates this sense that our culture is having a hard time groping with the concept of maturity.
"When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things."
Dramatic Stories about Yale Undergrads Hope You'll Ignore Math
Nine percent of Yale University students who participated in a recent survey on sexual behavior reported having been paid for sex at least once. Three percent said they had participated in bestiality, and more than half said they had "engaged in consensual pain" during sex.
The survey was administered to a group of about forty students on Saturday, during a workshop meant to prompt students to "reconsider their idea of 'normal'," according to the Yale Daily News.
"About forty," huh?
Let's skip past the question of whether we can count on college students honestly describing their sex lives in an anonymous survey.
If it's 33 students taking the survey, that explains how you can get three percent claiming to participate in bestiality (one student) and nine percent claiming to be paid for sex (three students). Also keep in mind that this is at a "workshop meant to prompt students to "reconsider their idea of 'normal.'" That's a pretty strong indicator that the sample isn't necessarily representative of the student body at large; we're surveying the most sexually adventurous/deviant among the Yale student body.
Heck, maybe the story is how low those figures are.

Don't let the day pass without reading the great piece by John Fund, NR's National Affairs Columnist, who reports that the President's forthcoming proposed budget will call for spending $100 billion on bogus "shovel-ready jobs." Meanwhile, Obama's determined four-year opposition to the Keystone XL Pipeline project has prevented tens of thousands of true "shovel-ready" jobs from being created (without any cost to U.S. taxpayers).

RedState Morning Briefing
For March 25, 2013
1.The Most Important Week in Human History
There are many candidates for most important day and most important week in human history. This week we remember what is arguably the very top of the top of the list.
As secularism increases in the western world, more and more are dismissive of the reality of Jesus Christ. Consequently, they may choose to dismiss the importance of this week.
That's narrow minded Christophobic thinking from some seriously self-centered individuals.
The reality is that whether you accept that Christ lived or not and whether you accept him as the Son of God or not, that so many for so long have accepted the significance of this week in history should not be ignored. The events of this week, culminating on Easter Sunday, fundamentally transformed the world in ways no other event in human history has.
The rise of the Christian, the Christian religion, governments connected to the church, and the missionary zeal have impacted everyone alive today in every country.
The resurrection event shapes our language, our idiomatic expressions, our way of telling stories, the cultural impact of the ideas of grace and redemption, and the map itself.
In a world growing more and more hostile toward the things of Christ, there is renewed zeal to paint the impact of the Church on the planet as mostly negative. Nothing could be further from the truth. Men were filthy savages before Christ rose and much of the world remains that way with or without him.
Frankly, one of the failings of the post-Christian West is the rejection of the idea of original sin and being born sinners. When we remember that men are, at essence and without Christ filling their lives, filthy savages, we are more cautious in our advancement and progress. The Enlightenment and post-Christian West have deluded us into thinking mankind is better than it actually is on its own.
As mankind turns its back on this most important week and its significance, looking to itself instead of the cross, mankind embraces its corrupted soul thinking the world corrupted is Heaven and Heaven itself is hell.
Throughout this week at RedState, ironically coinciding with the Supreme Court taking up the case of "gay marriage," we'll be reflecting on the monumental impact of what we do believe was a very real event that impacts our world to this very day. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2.26 Republicans Vote for Internet Sales Tax
Early Saturday morning, the Senate adopted its first concurrent budget resolution in four years.Democrats cleverly made sure to hand out enough hall passes to vulnerable red state senators so they could vote against the $1 trillion tax increase, while ensuring that it ultimately passed 50-49.Senators Baucus, Begich, Hagan, and Pryor were given the green light to vote no.After a 13-hour "votarama" on 70 amendments, there is a lot to digest.Obviously, none of this will have the force of law as all of the amendments that passed are attached to this budget resolution, which is dead on arrival in the House. However, there are some important votes that can be used against Democrats in vulnerable seats, such as those pertaining to Obamacare, abortion, cap and trade, and guns.
On the Republican side, perhaps the most egregious vote was the Enzi amendment to allow states to form a cartel and collect internet sales taxes for other states. The so-called Market Fairness Act passed in the form of a second degree amendment by 75-24, with the support of 26 Republicans. This will send the message to Harry Reid that he has more than 60 votes to pass this as a standalone bill.In doing so, they have voted to grow government all over the country, hurt low-tax states, impose taxation without representation, saddle small businesses with collecting taxes for 10,000 distinct tax jurisdictions, and adulterate the freest most successful entity known to man.You can read more about it here.
Most folks' mental image of oil well drilling owes more to Hollywood than to modern reality. Tinseltown taught us that "gushers" and fiery infernos are commonplace, just as the landscapes are dominated by ruthless swindlers, swaggering alpha males and heaving bosoms.
In the world of modern drilling practices, though, There Will Be Blood has been replaced by "There Will Be Mud". Drilling mud is actually a highly engineered fluid; one of its functions is to maintain pressure in the wellbore. The weight and properties of a properly-designed mud prevents fluids from entering the well and causing a catastrophic blowout or gusher.. . . please click here for the rest of the post →
4.AUDIO: What's $1 billion worth? A coin flip according to Colorado's Evie Hudak.
In Colorado on Wednesday, an amendment to an already massive education bill was up for a vote and State Senator Evie Hudak treated it with all of the importance of a game of pictionary challenging the other members to "get this done within 2 minutes."
When Republican Senator Owen Hill objected to the speed of the process and questioned whether he could make a competent decision under the circumstances, Hudak had a recommendation: "Flip a coin." . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Pakistani firm whose chemicals were used to kill US troops seeks subsidy for Indiana plant
By Jennifer Griffin, Justin Fishel
Published March 22, 2013
A Pakistani fertilizer maker whose chemicals have been used in 80 percent of the roadside bombs that have killed and maimed American troops in Afghanistan is now seeking U.S. taxpayer subsidies in order to open a factory in Indiana.
The request appears to be on hold pending further review, but the situation has stirred outrage in Congress, where some accuse the Pakistani government of halting efforts to clamp down on the bomb-making.
For the past seven years, the U.S. government has known that the raw material calcium ammonium nitrate, or CAN, is making its way across the border into Afghanistan where the Taliban use it to fuel their most deadly weapons, namely the improvised explosive device. IEDs have long been the number one killer of U.S. and coalition troops.
The material largely comes from Pakistani fertilizer maker the Fatima Group. But the Pakistani government has stymied attempts by the Pentagon to stop the flow of the fertilizer used in these homemade bombs, according to the director of military Joint IED Defeat Organization, Lt. Gen. Michael Barbero.

DON'T CALL IT AMNESTY
Amnesty is bad. Everyone agrees on that. Even the senators who support amnesty claim not to support it. Instead they support "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" with "A Path to Citizenship". They support a comprehensive solution that will be compassionate and work as an immigration policy for the 21st century.
No one uses the term "amnesty" anymore except opponents of amnesty for illegal aliens and their more vociferous advocates. This makes for some confusing speeches and press conferences.
The most bizarre argument that advocates of amnesty are making is that we have "de facto amnesty" now. The argument goes that since we have de facto amnesty now, we should just have the real thing and get it over with.
A lack of proper enforcement is not de facto amnesty. Amnesty is legalization. What Rubio and Rand Paul call de facto amnesty is the difference between not arresting a drug dealer and legalizing heroin.
The big sales pitch for 2012 was overall electability. The sales pitch for 2016 is Latino electability. The GOP only wants someone who has a shot with the Latino vote. And Marco Rubio and Rand Paul are busy polishing their Latino vote credentials. It's a stupid way to run a political movement, but a great way to get ahead.
Even if amnesty is good for Rubio or Paul, it's not good for the Republican Party, for America or for Latino immigrants for that matter, who are entitled to a legal system of entry, rather than being told that their best route into the country is by bribing a coyote and trying to make it across the border.
And during an economic downturn, championing mass immigration is insensitive to the majority of American workers. The GOP failed to properly make its case to them in two elections. Now it's giving them a big middle finger while chasing after the Mexican-American vote, even though far from all Mexican-Americans support amnesty.
Twenty years ago at this time we were in the midst of the federal government's 51 day siege on a compound of Bible worshippers who with their 12 children were all snuffed out in a raid. "That's torturing babies," a U.S. Representative bemoaned at the Congressional hearings investigating the Waco siege during which CS gas vapor was spewed down a long arm of an armored tank onto the roof, into the rooms, and ultimately wafted down into the windowless tower where some of the women and their children were hiding in the Mount Carmel Church compound of the David Karesh (Vernon Howell) followers! "Gas masks don't fit on babies," one investigator in Washington, D.C. observed. So as former Attorney General Janet Reno suffers from Parkinson's Disease in Stuart, FL, a lengthy, outstanding online video entitled "Waco-The Rules of Engagement (William Gazecki)" (1) reminds us just what can happen when a federal government-gone-wild destroys citizens. In NYC, any masochist can apply for a gun permit. The labyrinthine, invasive and expensive vetting process was designed by bureaucratic sadists to discourage the general public from ever attempting it. On that level, it works.
Even applicants who pass extensive background investigations can ultimately be rejected for reasons that are not explained and for which there is no appeal. Moreover, if you get turned down, that fact alone can be used against you in unrelated matters. And just so you know, if you are an average upstanding American citizen with a clean record seeking a 'concealed carry' permit, your chances are zero to none.
Not surprisingly, cops and criminals possess the majority of handguns here in Fun City. Why would the Chicago Public School (CPS) system be so presumptuous as to start teaching Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual Transsexual Sex-Ed to all its students, even five year old kindergarteners? Aside from pure hubris, satisfying Gay political groups is a good guess, but the simple answer is because they can. The Chicago's public schools are more than 85% Black or Latino and just 8.8% White. A combined 87% of Black and Hispanic Chicagoans live in poverty so they are as dependent upon White liberals as house pets are to their owners.
If these numbers were reversed the White ruling class in Chicago wouldn't dare force this plan on its students, yet because they own Chicago's minorities they can treat them like house pets. President Obama sweet-talked the Israelis, but not in the way he sweet-talked the Arab world in the 2009 Cairo speech. There were no apologies to Israel and not likely to be any. What went on behind closed doors with Netanyahu and others may have had a distinctly different tone. Who knows?
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy expressed frustration over the slow pace of immigration-reform efforts. This came just after five Republican committee members sent a letter to Leahy expressing concern that immigration reform was being pushed through too hastily. Noting that the initiative "potentially could be the most dramatic and consequential alteration of our immigration system in nearly 30 years," the five said sufficient time should be allotted for a series of comprehensive hearings and to give the voting public an opportunity to familiarize itself with the issue.
The GOP is alive and well at the state level and has a deep bench of Republican governors, some of whom will almost certainly enter the race for president in 2016. But what marks many of these state executives is a pragmatic approach to governance that has been utterly rejected by many on the right as "Democrat-lite" and hence unworthy of consideration for the highest office in the land.
For rogue regimes to threaten America and its allies is nothing new. But I have the distinct sense these days that the threats are both prolific and becoming more boldly specific.
ACT! for America delivers over 1,200 letters of support for teacher being bullied by CAIR-Washington
This past Tuesday a church in Concrete, Washington, which seats about 150 people, was filled to standing room only by over 450 people, many of whom stood outside the church in the rain, looking in through open windows.
The occasion?
A rally in support of Mary Janda.
Ms. Janda, a local veteran school teacher, has been falsely accused by the Washington affiliate of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) of making "anti-Muslim" remarks in her classroom.
It was estimated that about half of those turning out came from outside of Concrete, many of them ACT! for America members or those who heard about the rally from ACT! for America.
Kerry Hooks, Washington director for ACT! for America, delivered over 1,200 letters of support for Ms. Janda that ACT! for America members had emailed since we alerted the nation a week ago about CAIR-Washington's assault on Ms. Janda's fine reputation.
You, the chapter leaders and members of ACT! for America, showed Mary Janda that she's not alone in this fight. You proved once again how ACT! for America is making a difference!
Ms. Janda, during a class discussion on bullying, accurately described Hamas and the Taliban as organizations that use violence to intimidate and bully others.
One of her students complained to her father, a Muslim, who filed a complaint with CAIR-Washington.
The school district investigated the incident and found Ms. Janda had done nothing wrong.
But CAIR-Washington didn't "CAIR." It never talked to the teacher. Its agenda has been clear from day one-smear the good name of a dedicated teacher to reinforce its bogus claims that Muslims in America are frequent victims of civil rights abuses.
Of course, another agenda may be operating here. CAIR has been affirmatively connected to Hamas by our government. Could it be that CAIR-Washington is upset that Ms. Janda dared to speak the truth-that the terrorist organization Hamas "bullies" people?
Five years ago, in a community that knew little about CAIR, Mary Janda would have been an easy target for the bullying tactics employed by CAIR.
Not now. Thanks to YOU-the large grassroots presence of ACT! for America-tens of thousands of people know what's happening in Concrete, Washington. Mary Janda has been connected to pro bono legal counsel. Hundreds of people turned out to support her, and three times that many sent messages of support to her.

Obama Pressures Israel to Apologize for Defending Itself Against Jihad Flotilla -- Netanyahu Agrees to Pay Jihadists' Families
Fresh on the heels of Obama's coercion tour. What's next? Will Israel apologize for the holocaust? The only difference is that during World War II, Jews could not defend themselves, and now when they can, they are apologizing for doing so.
Israel surrenders under pressure from Obama, apologizes for defending itself against jihad flotilla, will pay victims' families. Jihadwatch
This is a dark day for Israel. The people on the Mavi Marmara flotilla were genocidal Jew-hating jihadis, as you can see in the video above: they were chanting a jihad war cry recalling Muhammad's massacre of the Jews of Arabia: "Khybar, Khybar, O Jews, the army of Muhammad will return." See the photos here of their weapons. In rapidly re-Islamizing Turkey, the fact that Israel fought back against these jihadis is a serious offense. And now Israel, under pressure from Obama, has apologized for defending itself, and set a precedent that it can be pressured into making self-defeating concessions after doing so.
"Turkey, Israel make US-brokered peace after Mavi Marmara apology," from Today's Zaman, March 22 (thanks to Joshua):
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered an apology to Turkey for a 2010 raid on an aid flotilla that resulted in the deaths of eight Turks and a Turkish American, ending a deep crisis in ties between the two former allies.
In a statement carried by Reuters, Netanyahu said he "expressed apology" to the Turkish people for any error that could have led to loss of life in the flotilla incident. Did he recently convert or was there some knowledge about his leanings before the shooting?
James Holmes, the gunman behind the Dark Knight massacre in Colorado last July, has reportedly turned Muslim and prays five times a day.
The killer showed off a lengthy, thick beard during a court appearance earlier this month, and a prison source has claimed it is a symbol of his new-found faith.
The source said Holmes has turned to Islam as a way of justifying his horrific murder spree in an Aurora, Colorado cinema on July 20 which left 12 people dead and 58 people wounded.

New York Paying $500 For Snitches To Report Illegal Gun Owners
I told you yesterday that Governor Andrew Cuomo was having to reevaluate his unconstitutional gun legislation called the SAFE Act. Well now this same tyrant is offering tax payer money for snitches in New York to tell on their fellow citizens that have firearms that are considered illegal under his new gun law.
Back in February of 2012, before the SAFE Act was passed, Cuomo indicated that one of the four pronged initiatives he was putting forth was a program to offer a cash reward (that's tax payer money) for citizens who become turncoats and out their neighbors to police so that they can confiscate their firearms, which are supposed to be protected under the Constitution.
A "Gun Tip Line" has been set up so that New Yorkers can call a toll free hotline (obviously paid for with tax payer dollars as well) and snitch on people without any evidence that they have an illegal firearm. It's sort of like Child Protective Services for Firearms. No evidence is needed, just an anonymous tip.
If Harry Reid is concerned with gun safety, he might learn to keep his finger off the trigger until his sights are on target.
The Hill is reporting that Harry Reid (D-NV) will include a "controversial" expansion of background checks to include private sales in his gun control bill.

Mar 22, 2013 11:04 am A New York Times best-selling book is about to become a movie about the supernatural - God's kind. Oscar nominated actor Greg Kinnear is in negotiations to play the role of the preacher father of a three year-old boy who was at death's door. But Colton Burpo lived to tell about his visit to Heaven. [...]
Mar 22, 2013 10:35 am George Will opens his recent column criticizing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) on federalism grounds by quoting from a 1948 Supreme Court case: "[U]nder the Constitution, the regulation and control of marital and family relationships are reserved to the States." What he doesn't point out is that the citation for that argument is a [...]
Be certain to tune in (or set your DVR to record) Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace. I will be debating same-sex marriage with Nicolle Wallace, former Communications Director for President George W. Bush. Wallace recently signed onto a legal brief urging the Supreme Court to declare traditional marriage laws unconstitutional. Click here for local air times.
After the show airs, I hope you will take a moment to send a brief email to fns@foxnews.com thanking Fox for having me on and encouraging them to invite me back for future segments.
March For Marriage
Next week the Supreme Court will hear arguments in two cases case seeking to redefine marriage. Once again the left is counting on unelected judges to impose its morality on society and invalidate the will of millions of Americans who have voted for state amendments to preserve normal marriage. Sadly, the court may exactly do that.
Please join me in our nation's capital on Tuesday, March 26th for the March for Marriage. I am proud to co-sponsor the March for Marriage along with the National Organization for Marriage and other pro-family organizations.
Please share this report with like-minded friends, family members and fellow worshippers, and encourage them to attend. Visit MarriageMarch.org for handouts, talking points, a schedule of the day's events and more.
Reid In Retreat
It's been a rough week for Harry Reid. He took it on the chin -- and rightly so -- for suggesting that seven Marines who died tragically in a training exercise were killed by Republican budget cuts.
Then he tried to drop a top item on the left's legislative wish list -- a ban on so-called assault weapons. Gun-grabbing leftists everywhere erupted in howls of rage.
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) accused Reid of "a major betrayal of trust." Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson wrote, "Shame on Harry Reid for killing any prospect of an assault weapons ban."
During a CNN interview, Michael Moore ripped into Reid, saying, "If a man with an assault weapon goes into the school where Harry Reid's grandchildren [attend] and kills his grandchildren, would he stand in front of that microphone ... and say, '...my grandchildren just got killed today but, you know, we can't get it passed because we don't have the votes.' Would he do that really? I don't think so."
And the White House wasn't happy either. Vice President Joe Biden told NPR, "I have never found that it makes any sense to support something and declare that there is no possibility of it passing. ...the president and I are going to continue to push and we haven't given up on it."
Harry Reid appears to be in retreat. In a statement released last night, the Senate majority leader promised that the ban will get a vote. But whatever happens with it -- whether it is included in the full bill, gets a separate vote as an amendment, or is abandoned entirely -- the rest of Reid's anti-Second Amendment legislation is still extremely bad.
I have received several emails this week from folks who misunderstood my earlier comments on this issue, and who were concerned that I might be indifferent to universal background checks. I am not.
Background checks sound innocent enough. But what Senate Democrats are proposing could make it illegal for a father to give his son a gun. In many parts of the country, this is a rite of passage. In many families, hunting rifles and other firearms are treasured heirlooms, passed down from one generation to the next. If Senate liberals get their way, children would have to go to a gun store and apply for clearance before they receive a hunting rifle as a gift.
Moreover, it's unlikely to accomplish anything beyond creating yet another burden for law-abiding citizens. According to FBI statistics, you are more likely to be strangled or kicked to death than be murdered with a rifle or a shotgun. And thugs don't bother with background checks!
So what's the point? As we see many governments around the world trampling on individual rights, and nervously watch our own government mandating insurance and restricting religious liberty, it is perfectly understandable why people would be concerned that universal background checks could easily serve as the first step toward registration and confiscation.
Iran inadvertently spills the beans ...
Iran has tried to keep its devious plans secret from the rest of the world, but the Islamic Republic has just inadvertently confirmed disclosure of information with worldwide implications.
If you think the modern-day rise of militant atheism is nothing more than a philosophical nuisance meant only to eliminate prayer from city council meetings and Nativity displays from public parks, you're seriously in need of THIS history lesson.
Jesus, describing evil men, gave us a clue as to how to recognize them.
"An evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks," Christ told the multitude.
Fast-forward 2,000 years and this respected forensic profiler says recent statements coming from the mouth of Barack Obama suggest new, dark intents in his heart.
What is it about social media that attracts so many anti-social people?
They invaded Twitter, and now, if you're a user of Instagram, the increasingly popular social-media site that lets users share photos, you'll have to avoid them there.
Yesterday, WND brought you the story of a Florida professor -- and county Democrat Party official -- who made his students stomp on the name "Jesus," and the subsequent suspension of a student who refused to participate.
You probably thought it couldn't get any worse.
Wrong!
Here's the latest outrage public educators are willing to commit against your faith ... using your tax dollars ... and your kids.
'Keep sex and politics' out of this beloved institution
Boy Scout leaders, scouts and parents from across the nation are mobilizing against a proposed change to the group's century-old policy that would allow openly homosexual members.
Look what they're doing to defend the iconic institution ... and find out what you can do to help.
The producer of the long-running reality show, COPS, admits it ... he intentionally skews the number of arrestees of this race, making it look like they commit more crimes that they do.
A Democrat Party official would never do THIS to "Muhammed"
You can be sure a university professor, who is also a Democrat Party official, would never force his Muslim students to do THIS.
And if he did, you can be sure THIS would never happen to the offended students. Nor would university administrators ever say THIS in the professor's defense.
Barry Rubin argues that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu did not really apologize to Turkey over the Mavi Marmara incident. He reasons that Netanyahu did not meet the demands Erdogan set forth for an apology.
I'm a fan of Rubin's work, but in this case his argument rests on a fallacy. The fact that Netanyahu's statement doesn't met Erdogan's specifications doesn't prevent it from being an apology.
Rubin acknowledges that the word "apology" appears in Netanyahu's statement, but says "it is notably directed at the Turkish people, not the government and is of the sorry-if-your feelings-were-hurt variety." Again, Rubin's analysis is flawed. An apology to "the Turkish people" is an apology.
Rubin erres further in claiming that the apology is of the "sorry if your feeling were hurt" variety. The statement that reflects the oral apology reads:
Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed an apology to the Turkish people for any error that may have led to the loss of life, and agreed to complete the agreement for compensation.
One does not provide compensation for mere hurt feelings. And Israel's willingness to provide compensation to the families of the terrorist/Israel haters who lost their life, makes it easy to infer that Israel did, in fact, commit an error that may have led to the loss of life. Moreover, Netanyahu reportedly acknowledged "operational mistakes" in the raid.
Indeed, Rubin concedes that Netanyahu's statement provides a public relations victory to Erdogan, and one that Israel will let him claim. He also doubts that Erdogan will moderate his stance towards Israel, and suggests that President Obama, who encouraged Netanyahu to apologize, "doesn't understand (or doesn't care) how deeply Erdogan's anti-Israel feeling runs."
Just so. And that's why Netanyahu's statement wasn't just an apology, but also an ill-advised one.
It takes determination to out-demagogue New York City's anti-cop advocates, but the New York Times has done just that. A front-page article in Friday's print edition announces: BRONX INSPECTOR, SECRETLY TAPED, SUGGESTS RACE IS A FACTOR IN STOPS. The story goes on to claim in its lead paragraph that a secretly taped recording "suggests that, in at least one precinct, a person's skin color can be a deciding factor in who is stopped." In fact, the exchange in the recording, between a police officer and his precinct commander, suggests something altogether different: that crime determines who is stopped by the police. But reporter Joseph Goldstein has twisted the taped conversation into a poisonous indictment of the police at a time when anti-cop passions, already enflamed by irresponsible city politicians, are running dangerously high.
On the beat she is covering here (and others), Mac Donald is peerless. Please read the whole thing.
The Power Line 100 Best Professors in America roster is necessarily going to tend toward the humanities, because it's closer to our knowledge base and the humanities are more accessible to the general public as well as closer to the political issues that are the lifeblood of this site. But we certainly want to sweep up distinguished professors in the sciences and technical fields, too.
Thomas Blasingame
A reader tip directs me to Thomas Blasingame, the Robert L. Whiting Professor in the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M, who is one of the academic superstars in applied research that has contributed to the renaissance of oil and gas production in the United States over the last decade. Prof. Blasingame not only travels and lectures extensively, but he also supervises a large number of graduate students at Texas A & M, which is always a mark of an outstanding professor.
The video below is a 40-minute lecture of Prof. Blasingame on oil well drawdown analysis, and I certainly don't recommend watching the whole thing unless you're an oilfield geek. But the first three minutes are fun for several reasons; first, you can tell immediately why Prof. Blasingame is a compelling classroom instructor, and second, you get a vivid reminder of the immense gulf between the humanities and the technical sciences in higher education. It is hard to imagine a professor in a humanities department getting away with the opening story, and especially the dialects, that Blasingame uses to warm up his student audience. A history professor who told this story would be hauled up on charges before any of the inquisitions of political correctness, diversity, and sensitivity that almost every university (except perhaps in Texas) now has in being. (Plus he says very sensible things about the CA Bay Area: "Nice place to work, but I wouldn't want to live there.")
Needless to say, Prof. Blasingame's students probably don't lack for good job prospects after graduation, either.
We interrupt this forum for a special bulletin: *****NPR HAS GONE ROGUE***** They just broadcast an hour-long episode of "This American Life," which was a devastating critique of the disability program. Devastating. They called it the new default welfare program, pointing out that it costs the taxpayers vastly more than all other welfare programs put together. They went on and on and on and on and on about the utterly corrupt and dysfunctional character of the whole program and its explosive growth. Podcast version available Sunday at 7 p.m. Central Time here (Program 490: Trends with Benefits).
In the meantime, NPR has posted reporter Chana Joffe-Walt's Web extra. Here is the opening of her take on Hale County, Alabama, the disability capital of the USA:
In Hale County, Alabama, 1 in 4 working-age adults is on disability. On the day government checks come in every month, banks stay open late, Main Street fills up with cars, and anybody looking to unload an old TV or armchair has a yard sale.
Sonny Ryan, a retired judge in town, didn't hear disability cases in his courtroom. But the subject came up often. He described one exchange he had with a man who was on disability but looked healthy.
"Just out of curiosity, what is your disability?" the judge asked from the bench.
"I have high blood pressure," the man said.
"So do I," the judge said. "What else?"
"I have diabetes."
"So do I."
There's no diagnosis called disability. You don't go to the doctor and the doctor says, "We've run the tests and it looks like you have disability." It's squishy enough that you can end up with one person with high blood pressure who is labeled disabled and another who is not.
I talked to lots of people in Hale County who were on disability. Sometimes, the disability seemed unambiguous.
"I was in a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo," Dane Mitchell, a 23-year-old guy I met in a coffee shop, told me. "I flipped it both ways, flew 165 feet from the Jeep, going through 12 to 14,000 volts of electrical lines. Then I landed into a briar patch. I broke all five of my right toes, my right hip, seven of my vertebrae, shattering one, breaking a right rib, punctured my lung, and then I cracked my neck."
Other stories seemed less clear. I sat with lots of women in Hale County who told me how their backs kept them up at night and made it hard for them to stand on the job. "I used to cry to try to work," one woman told me. "It was so painful."
People don't seem to be faking this pain, but it gets confusing. I have back pain. My editor has a herniated disc, and he works harder than anyone I know. There must be millions of people with asthma and diabetes who go to work every day. Who gets to decide whether, say, back pain makes someone disabled?
As far as the federal government is concerned, you're disabled if you have a medical condition that makes it impossible to work. In practice, it's a judgment call made in doctors' offices and courtrooms around the country. The health problems where there is most latitude for judgment - back pain, mental illness - are among the fastest growing causes of disability.
Please check out NPR's Web Extra. I think we will also want to check out the report when it is posted tonight.
The President of the United States had some incredibly foolish things to say during his trip to the Middle East. Some of them were said during his press conference with Mahmoud Abbas, the Chairman of the PLO and the President of the Palestinian Authority, now serving out the ninth year of his four-year presidential term. The Wall Street Journal has posted a transcript of the press conference here.
...I think it's important for us to work through this [peace] process, even if there are irritants on both sides. The Israelis have concerns about rockets flying into their cities last night. And it would be easy for them to say, you see, this is why we can't have peace because we can't afford to have our kids in beds sleeping and suddenly a rocket comes through the roof. But my argument is even though both sides may have areas of strong disagreement [sic], may be engaging in activities that the other side considers to be a breach of good faith [sic], we have to push through those things to try to get to an agreement - because if we get an agreement then it will be very clear what the nature of that agreement is: There will be a sovereign Palestinian state, a sovereign Jewish State of Israel.
And those two states I think will be able to deal with each other the same way all states do. I mean, the United States and Canada has [sic] arguments once in a while, but they're not the nature of arguments that can't be solved diplomatically. And I think we can keep pushing through some of these problems and make sure that we don't use them as an excuse not to do anything.
In his New York Times column this morning, Tom Friedman purports to instruct Israel on the reality of the neighborhood in which it reside. I would say that this is advice for which the people of Israel have little need, because they all live the reality in one way or another every day and, unlike Friedman, they have to live with the consequences of their judgment. As a result, they have a somewhat better handle on the reality than Friedman does. The President of the United States, however, actually requires a dose of Friedman's wit and wisdom just to ascend to the level of conventional liberal claptrap.
If waterboarding, a procedure we inflicted on our own troops, can be considered torture, I suppose that almost anything one doesn't approve of can be so deemed. And given the proven effectiveness of throwing the term torture around, the temptation to apply it to anything one doesn't approve of must be difficult for the intellectually dishonest to resist.
Thus, sure enough, we find U.N. bureaucrats attempting to define "torture" in the healthcare context. The results are predictable. Wesley Smith informs us that a special report to the U.N. views laws outlawing abortion as torture. And, naturally, the intellectual rot doesn't stop there:
Other policy disputes are also inflated into torture, e.g., laws requiring sex change surgery before legal sex reassignment, laws that permit a parent to lose custody of a child solely because they use drugs, and mandatory HIV testing for. . ."sex workers."
"Racism" used to be the left's favorite discussion-ending epithet; now it has a rival in "torture." Can it be long before U.N. bureaucrats will press to label Zionism torture?
Smith concludes:
This is the direction in which the internationalists want to take us. And if it means that the true horror of torture is watered down by including laws, actions or omissions that aren't "torture" properly understood, well that's just the cost of using international law to destroy national sovereignty in the cause of imposing the ruling class's morality throughout the world.
So, it turns out even Jay Leno has taken note of my forthcoming sojourn at the University of Colorado. But his job description isn't quite right. In loco parentis is one thing, but it's really not my thing. Still, next stop The Daily Show?
Did the Iraq war hurt the GOP? Yes. The war, and the crash of '08, half killed it. It's still digging out, and whether it can succeed is an open question. . .
It ruined the party's hard-earned reputation for foreign-affairs probity. They started a war and didn't win it. It was longer and costlier by every measure than the Bush administration said it would be. . .
After Iraq it was the Republicans who seemed at best the party of historical romantics or, alternatively, the worst kind of cynic, which is an incompetent one. Iraq marked a departure in mood and tone from past conservatism.
At dinner last Wednesday night in Washington with about a dozen important conservatives, a well-known journalist from our ranks went around the table asking each of us to answer the question, "Iraq-yes or no?" The vote was almost evenly split, with a slight advantage to the "No" side. I was among the "no" vote, though with the qualification that a purely punitive attack on Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein was fully justifiable, accompanied with a quick withdrawal and a warning that if they stepped out of line, "we'll be back." We've shown twice now that we can thump the country quickly in a pure contest of arms. But that's not the American style; we have to engage in "nation-building," whether we call it that or not, because it is a distinctly unconservative undertaking. Maybe such a punitive raid would have been a bad idea too, as it might well have left the country wide open to Iranian-Syrian domination (as though that hasn't happened anyway to some extent). It's another reminder that sometimes there are no good choices, and leaders have to choose (which Obama may be avoiding having to do with Iran, Syria, and North Korea right now).
Hindsight is always perfect, so it is no fair to indict the Bush Administration for a lack of foresight that the protracted struggle in Iraq would reshape our domestic politics in a way that opened the route for Barack Obama to become president. Nor should a conservative leader ever feel constrained by the irresponsible, demagogic, or opportunistic opposition from liberals. Yet there are a few truths of American politics that ought to have been kept in mind, starting with the fact that the American people do not like long military engagements. Heck, they don't like relatively short ones (i.e., Korea) if they don't go well.
So the Iraq War has done for the Republicans what the Vietnam War did for Democrats in the 1960s and 1970s. Even aside from contributing to the rise of Obama, it has dissipated public support for a forward foreign policy, and constrained the options of current and future presidents for action against Iran, Syria, and North Korea. Late in his life William F. Buckley said one of his two greatest regrets was his support for the Vietnam War. It seems that for at least some conservatives, that view of Iraq has already taken hold. There's no evading this political fact.
It's been a while since I inflicted my dubious throwback enthusiasm for progressive rock on indulgent Power Line readers, but I somehow came across the video below of Francis Dunnery, with whom I'm totally unfamiliar though I gather he has a following, performing a live cover of "Back in NYC," a neglected tune from the B-side of the old Genesis classic album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway." (The terrific Progarchy blog, which my pal Brad Birzer of Hillsdale College helps support, discusses the pros and cons of "Lamb" in a new series that starts with this long post Thursday.)
Some day, incidentally, I'm going to have to press Birzer on how he combines his fondness for Russell Kirk with progressive rock. I can only imagine what the Sage of Mecosta would have said within hearing the first 10 seconds of a progressive rock tune in his home at Piety Hill.
In the new issue of the Weekly Standard, Jay Cost argues that Obamacare isn't forever. After a big windup, Jay delivers a changeup. He doesn't foresee Obamacare going away any time soon; it has too big a constituency for its benefits. He postulates that the health-insurance exchanges that will be established under Obamacare provide a mechanism for modulating Obamacare in some beneficial (if unspecified) respect.
According to the Washington Post's tabulation, the federal government will run 26 of the Obamacare exchanges (because the states have declined to do the dirty work). The federal government will also work with seven states to establish Obamacare exchanges. Only 17 states and the District of Columbia will establish their own Obamacare exchanges. Arkansas has received conditional approval to operate an exchange in a state partnership with the federal government, and it receives special attention in Cost's article as an optimistic portent.
The immediate future under Obamacare is easier to anticipate than the hoped-for reforms that Jay Cost foresees. The Wall Street Journal reports, for example (and please do read the whole thing):
In a private presentation to brokers late last month, UnitedHealth Group Inc., UNH -1.09% the nation's largest carrier, said premiums for some consumers buying their own plans could go up as much as 116%, and small-business rates as much as 25% to 50%. The company said the estimates were driven in part by growing medical costs not directly tied to the law. It also cited the law's requirements that health status not affect rates and that plans include certain minimum benefits and limits to out-of-pocket charges, among other things.
Jeff Alter, who leads UnitedHealth's employer and individual insurance business, said the numbers represented a "high-end scenario," not an average. "There are some scenarios in which a member could see as much as a 116% increase or over," he said, though others, such as some older consumers, could see decreases. He said the company dwelled on the possible increases because it was trying to prepare brokers to speak with clients facing big jumps.
Other carriers have also projected steep rate increases during private meetings and conversations with brokers. Brokers say they are being told to prepare the marketplace for small-business and individual rate increases as carriers get ready to file specific rate proposals and plan designs with regulators.
Insurers are "not being shy that premiums are going to increase in 2014," and are urging brokers to "brace our clients," said John Lacy, vice president of group benefits at Bouchard Insurance, a brokerage in Clearwater, Fla. His firm has been hearing from carrier representatives that individual premiums in Florida could go up 35% to 50%, on average, and small-business rates around 30%, though it hopes to find strategies to blunt the impact.
Obamacare isn't forever, but Jay Cost to the contrary notwithstanding, the next stop is far more likely to be socialized medicine in the Canadian style, as Charles Krauthammer indicates in the video below than anything hospitable to free markets or free men.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu apologized today to Turkey on Friday for an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla. The apology is, of course, the handiwork of President Obama. Indeed, Netanyahu made the call during an airport meeting with Obama shortly before Obama mercifully left Israel.
The apology is a humiliation for Israel, which had nothing for which to be sorry. Netanyahu's statement - which he wisely resisted making for three years - will not improve Israeli relations with Turkey. Relations are poor not because of the flotilla incident, but because Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan, a good friend of Obama's, is an Israel-hating Islamist.
How much does Erdogan hate Israel? Daniel Pipes reminds us that last month, Erdogan stated: "Just like Zionism, anti-Semitism and fascism, Islamophobia must be regarded as a crime against humanity." And three days ago, Erdogan stood by his claim that Zionism, the principle upon which Israel is founded, constitutes a crime against humanity.
If anyone should apologize, it is Erdogan - not just for his verbal attack on Zionism, but also for supporting the terrorists who undertook the Gaza flotilla . But instead, thanks to Obama, Erdogan is rewarded with an apology from Israel.
Erodgan/Turkey is the only winner from Obama's trip to Israel. And he's the only party Obama wanted to win, now that he has become disillusioned with the Palestinians.
It is a cliche to salute Israel as a land of miracles - Ruth Wisse observes more originally in the context of Passover that "modern Israel represents an immense human accomplishment that may even go beyond the prophetic vision" - but for a tiny country it has staked out an improbable position at the forefront of many life-saving and life-enhancing technologies. In the New York Daily News Matthew Kalman provides a glimpse of President Obama's exposure to one such technology during his visit to Jerusalem yesterday:
She was the surprise star attraction in an exhibit of the latest in Israeli technology.
Theresa Hannigan, a paralyzed retired U.S. Army sergeant from Long Island, found herself bear-hugged by President Obama Thursday as she showed how she regained the power to walk.
Hannigan suffers from a neurological auto-immune disease, but with ReWalk, a $60,000 bionic suit invented by Israeli scientists, she can even climb stairs.
The exoskeleton suit uses computers and motion sensors to allow paraplegics to walk with motorized legs that power knee and hip movement. It made headlines last year when British athlete Clare Lomas became the first paraplegic to walk the London Marathon.
Hannigan, 60, of Patchogue, told Obama she was introduced to it by Dr. Anne Spungen at the Veteran's Administration hospital in the Bronx. When she put on the suit it was "beyond words," she said.
"I had to sit down. I couldn't believe that what they were telling me was true - that I was going to be able to press a button and simply stand," she told the Daily News.
"Please tell me how you're standing, tell me how this works," asked the President.
After listening to her explain her tale, he made her day.
"He said 'Oh,' and that's when he came over and hugged me," said the delighted vet. "I thought: 'Oh my God, the President of the United States gets it and he's hugging me.' He just came right at me and gave me a bear hug like your father would give you."
The Daily News runs the story with the touching photo below. ReWalk's informative post on the demonstration for President Obama yesterday is here.
Michael McConnell is a distinguished scholar, law professor (currently at Stanford Law School, my alma mater) and jurist (he served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit). He is also a friend of Power Line which, I understand, he started reading back in 2002, our first year.
McConnell has written a Wall Street Journal op-ed about the two same-sex marriage cases the Supreme Court will hear next week. The first case involves the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8, which provides that "only marriage between a woman and a man is valid or recognized"; the second involves the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
McConnell argues that the Supreme Court should decline to decide the Prop 8 case on the theory that the parties defending its constituionality lack "standing" to do so (the State of California refused to defend Prop 8). As for DOMA, McConnell argues that the Court should strike it down as an unconstitutional intrusion on the power of States.
Ed Whelan, another long-time friend of Power Line, has written a rebuttal to McConnell's op-ed. In my opinion, Whelan has the better of the argument on both "standing" to challenge Prop 8 and the constitutionality of DOMA.
I want to add my thoughts about what seems to be the animating theory behind McConnell's view of the standing issue - that no matter how the Court decides the merits of the Prop 8 case, it will interfere with a democratic sorting out of the same-sex marriage issue. He writes:
If the justices hold that California's Proposition 8, which provides that "only marriage between a woman and a man is valid or recognized," is unconstitutional, this will end the deliberations and impose a single national definition of marriage on us all. The court cannot reach this outcome without branding the views of the other side as either "irrational," if it employs the lower, rational-basis level of judicial scrutiny, or "bigoted" and hateful, which would justify heightened judicial scrutiny. That is not the path to national reconciliation, and it does not show respect to the diverse views on this divisive issue.
But if the justices hold that there is no constitutional right to same-sex marriage, this also imposes an answer of a sort. It would reflect the Supreme Court's considered judgment that in the eyes of the Constitution, same-sex relationships may be treated as morally different from (and inferior to) heterosexual relationships. Such a decision would set a precedent for the foreseeable future. It would embolden opponents of same-sex marriage and deprive proponents of one of their most potent moral claims in the political process-that the denial of marriage rights offends American values of equality.
I think I see where McConnell is coming from, but find the second paragraph unpersuasive. To uphold the democratically reached decision of the people of California would not stunt the democratic process. The Supreme Court would merely hold that Prop 8 does not offend the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. In doing so, presumably, it would conclude only that California's ban on same-sex marriage is not irrational (hardly a ringing endorsement) or that the ban is not founded on bigotry (also no endorsement, though proponents of same-sex marriage obviously would prefer that those who disagree with them be so branded by the Court).
Proponents of same-sex marriage would remain free to argue a ban is offensive because, among other things, it produces inequality. Not every law that produces inequality violates the Equal Protection Clause; indeed, most don't. The Court's decision could reaffirm this obvious point.
So I think Whelan is right to say that "the answer. . .the Supreme Court would be providing in holding that there is no constitutional right to same-sex marriage, and the precedent that it would set" is "that the question whether or not to redefine marriage to include same-sex couples is a matter that the Constitution leaves to the democratic processes." And, as Whelan notes, this is a view that McConnell ably defends in the opening paragraphs of his op-ed.
UPDATE: You can read Prof. McConnell's response to Whelan's post, and Whelan's reply, here.
The estimable Noemie Emery chides the "conservative wing" of the GOP for making "excuses, excuses" for the fact that the Republican Party hasn't been nominating candidates for president more to its liking. The excuse offered is that "The Establishment met at the Country Club on alternate Tuesdays to undermine all the upcoming Reagans." The reality, says Emery, is this.
[A]gainst establishment types who were national figures, the conservative movement flung preachers and pundits (Pat Robertson, Alan Keyes and Pat Buchanan), has-beens and losers (New Gingrich and Rick Santorum), and others still worse (Herman Cain, for example), who on second thought lost even conservative primary voters.
There's considerable truth in Emery's analysis. I disagree with her if she is claiming (a) that there is no Republican Establishment or (b) that it hasn't done what it can to make life difficult for conservative presidential candidates it dislikes. Moreover, it can be argued that not all hard-line conservative candidates were preachers, pundits, has-beens, losers, or jokes. Consider Orrin Hatch (2000), Fred Thompson (2008), and Rick Perry (2012). And recall that Ronald Reagan, pre-1980, could accurately have been described as "an actor, a has-been, and loser."
Emery's underlying point is sound, however. Hard-line conservative candidates have failed to win the Republican nomination because, in part, they have not been attractive and in part because the GOP as a whole isn't as conservative as its conservative base fancies. And, while John McCain and Mitt Romney were sub-optimal candidates, I doubt that any of their more conservative primary opponents in the 2008 or 2012 Republican prmiary field would have run any better - indeed, most probably would have run worse.
Where does this analysis leave us? It leaves us, as I recently suggested, with an establishment that contemplates "firing" the conservative base and a conservative that contemplates "firing" the establishment.
It also leaves us wondering whether there is candidate who can bridge the gap. Or, as Emery might put it, wondering whether the conservative wing can find an attractive candidate who is willing to seek the Republican nomination in 2016.
Many believe that it can. Names like Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, Ted Cruz, and Ron Johnson roll off the tongue. But even this early in the presidential cycle (are we actually in the cycle yet?) clouds appear on the horizon.
The establishment is starting to push back against Rand Paul - a good development in my view, since Paul is a libertarian who doesn't hold traditionally conservative positions on many key issues. At the same time, the establishment is pushing back against some hard-core traditional conservative positions, and has enlisted Rubio to lead the charge on amnesty for illegal aliens.
I think Rubio is widely viewed as the man who can hold the conservative base while leading the Party in more moderate directions. I see Rubio leading the Party to permanent minority status.
With things this interesting, we must, indeed, already be in the 2016 presidential cycle.
President Obama said some good things in Israel. The good things he said contradicted the thesis of his first-term approach to Israel. In the style of what might be called Obama knows best - knows best what is good for you - he also said some foolish and patronizing things that represented continuity with his first-term approach. In his speech to Israeli students, for example, Obama gave the impression that continuing war on Israel emanating from Gaza and the West Bank derives from the Israel's lack of willingness to take risks for peace.
At a press conference yesterday in Ramallah, Obama addressed the assembled journalists while standing under a banner of Yasser Arafat. This was notable, so it seems to me, in at least two respects. First, Arafat was the man who couldn't say yes to Israel or to peace. Abbas was his partner in crime and war, and the war continues. One wonders how many times Israel is supposed to trade for its right to exist.
Second, Arafat was a cold-blooded murderer of Americans including United States Ambassador to Sudan Cleo Noel. It is a gross humiliation of the United States for Obama to stand willingly under Arafat's banner. It may be less humiliating than having repeatedly received Arafat at the White House in person as an honored guest, as did Bill Clinton, but it is a humiliation nonetheless.
When Obama spoke at Georgetown Univeristy, the White House asked the university to cover up prominent Christian symbols that would have appeared behind him. The symbols - the letters "IHS" which stands for Jesus Christ, and a cross - were engraved on a pediment that stood behind the stage from which Obama delivered his address. The university covered them upon request.
It's Obamacare's third anniversary. Though many key parts of Obamacare - including some of its tax hikes and mandates - don't go into effect until next year, Americans are feeling many of its changes already.
Please share these impacts to mark three years of this bureaucratic nightmare.
Righting a Wrong: Restoring Military Tuition Assistance
Military Tuition Assistance is a popular program used by hundreds of thousands of troops to further their education and become better leaders, both in uniform and back in the civilian job market.
Disappointingly, Military Tuition Assistance is what the Administration chose to cut because of sequestration. The Administration didn't have to end this program: but they did. The administration clearly decided to try and make sequester cuts as painful as possible and our military men and women were being made to suffer the consequences.
Instead of cutting waste, they ended a popular benefit for members of the Armed Services. This Administration would rather renege on a promise made to soldiers, airmen and Marines, then work together to prioritize spending and get our fiscal house in order.
Thankfully, through bi-partisan efforts in both Chambers, we were able to right a wrong. We voted to compel the Administration to keep our government's promise to America's servicemen and women. Quite frankly, it is a shame it ever had to come to this.
Furthermore, the House also passed a balanced budget which I supported. The Administration has yet to propose a budget, which was due six weeks ago. I highlight this because the failure of the Administration to propose a plan presents the government with bad choices, like cutting Military Tuition Assistance.
I urge the President to sign the Continuing Resolution and give our troops what was promised to them.
Fitzpatrick Joins Effort to Avert Government Shutdown
I co-sponsored the 'Government Shutdown Prevention Act of 2013' because the gridlock and partisanship in Washington should no longer be allowed to hold families and businesses hostage.
This bill prevents government shutdown, and forces Congress and the President to not miss statutory budget deadlines. It is long overdue and I will bring people together from both sides of the aisle to get it passed.
The delay and indecision in Washington is costing families and is holding back our economy. People need to know that the services they depend upon will be there, while businesses need predictability and certainty from the Federal government to plan their budgets.
The Government Shutdown Prevention Act of 2013, HR 1164, creates an automatic Continuing Resolution (CR) for regular appropriations bills not completed before the end of the fiscal year. The current (CR) for regular appropriations bills not completed before the end of the fiscal year. The current CR that the government is operating under expires on March 27th. The House of Representatives has already passed a bill to fund the federal government through the end of the fiscal year.
Under HR 1164, if the Senate were to fail to pass a funding bill by March 27th, the "auto-CR" would go in to effect and after 120 days funding is reduced by one percent and continues to be reduced by one percent every 90 days of budget deadline lapses. The decrease in amount provided under the auto-CR is an incentive for both Congress and the President to reach agreements on appropriations bills.
While it is unfortunate that we have to introduce bills like this to make Washington do its job, the past four years have proven that a measure like this is necessary.
With $16.6 trillion in debt and federal deficit spending around $1 trillion a year, it is time for a responsible approach to federal spending.
Also, I introduced the SHIELD Act (HR 55) earlier this year which would require that, in the event of a government shutdown or other lapse of appropriations, money would still be made available for the military and critical federal law enforcement agents.
Willow Grove Naval Air Station Gains Mission and Jobs
I am pleased that nearly 250 new jobs will be coming to Willow Grove to support missions utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. UAV's have saved the lives of an untold number of American soldiers. They are an effective means to serve warning to the enemies of the United States that our pursuit of justice will be forever relentless.
While the Willow Grove facility will not have the capacity to launch UAV's, I share the concerns of many Americans regarding their domestic use. I look forward to visiting the facility to ensure that our freedoms are protected both at home and abroad.
Careers focused on advanced technology are critical to growing our region; this facility could serve to make us the nation's leader in these emerging technologies which will create more jobs.
Senate Signals Support For On-Line Sales Tax
Posted onMarch 24, 2013by Conservative Byte
By an overwhelming 75-24 vote, Senators, late Friday, approved an amendment to the budget draft that would authorize states to compel merchants to collect sales taxes on on-line purchases. The amendment itself is non-binding, but it signals broad support for legislation dubbed The Marketplace Fairness Act. Action on that legislation could come later this year.
Techincally, on-line purchases are subject to sales tax. A landmark Supreme Court decision, however, limits states ability to compel merchants to collect the tax, unless the merchant has a substantial "physical presence" in the state. Under current law, consumers are expected to report their on-line purchases to the state and remit the taxes they owe. Unsurprisingly, almost no one does this.
Republicans are getting a lot of unsolicited advice about how to recover from last year's defeat, and most of it is either ignorant or coming from people who don't have Republican Party victories in their game plan. One of the worst of these bits of advice is that Republicans should join a bipartisan push for immigration amnesty.
There is considerable evidence that Hispanics' estrangement from Republicans is not just due to the well-known resistance of Romney and others to support citizenship for those here illegally. Full Story

Goading Gullible America Into War By Patrick J. Buchanan Sucking America into Syria's civil war is only a near-term goal for the War Party, which is after larger game - greasing the skids for a U.S. war on Iran. Preventing another generation of war dead delivered to Dover should be the first priority of American patriots.
Dumb and Dangerous: America's Fast Pass for Saudi Arabia By Michelle Malkin Your federal government is back to pandering to wealthy travelers from Saudi Arabia. In the eyes of our massive homeland security apparatus, the comfort of Saudis is a higher priority than the safety of American citizens.
Basketball & Budgets By Rich Galen the House passed the Ryan budget this week and sent it off the Senate where it had the same chance of success as Liberty University had in the NCAA Tournament. Note that the House Democrats presented no alternative to the Ryan budget; they just all voted against it. Nor has the President presented his annual budget which is now nearly two months overdue.
Dictators are a very important part of everyone's lives. They unconditionally share with us other people's wealth even when we don't ask for it - and all they want in return is our approval and total compliance. Whether we are at home, at work, or relaxing with friends, our beloved dictator is always kindly watching our every step, protecting us from our own bad choices and unhealthy urges.
But there inevitably comes a time to say "good-bye." The loss of a tyrant leaves a tremendous hole in our lives and the grief can be overwhelming.
Thankfully, today's technology gives us several comforting alternatives, ranging from vacuum sealing to freeze-dry preservation.
