Even More Warning Signs: Obama Poised for Hostile Military Takeover of U.S. - Part 2
A week ago, I laid out a list of things President Obama has put in place to set the nation up for his hostile military takeover.
After my first post about Obama's hostile military takeover, I received an email from a reader that offered an explanation to my pondering of why NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) would also be ordering millions of rounds of ammunition and assault rifles. He offered the idea that it is an ironic twist to Obama's relationship with terrorist Bill Ayers.
Ayers was a wanted domestic terrorist back in the 1960s and 1970s. Ayers was a co-founder of the terrorist group known as the Weather Underground. Now, Obama is using NOAA, a federal weather agency to stockpile weapons and ammunition for his terrorist assault on the American people.
Today, I would like to add a few more items to that list that makes the case for his hostile military takeover even more compelling.
It has now been confirmed that the goal of the Department of Homeland Security is to purchase a total of 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. A portion of that ammunition is hollow point bullets, which have been banned from use in war by international law. Another portion is specialized sniper ammunition.
In case you have a difficult time comprehending the significance of 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition, allow me to give you a couple of comparisons. During the height of the war in Iraq, the US Army fired less than 6 million rounds per month. That means DHS has enough ammunition to supply the US Army for 266.67 months (22.22 years) of intense war.

Pope Francis, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio Of Buenos Aires NEW POPE
 | Pope Francis, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio Of Buenos Aires NEW POPE |
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Pope Francis. new pope elected. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio Of Buenos Aires, has been elected to be the 266th pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Francis.
Francis was elected to the papacy after two days of conclave meetings with a total of five ballots cast. Voting in the conclave, which began Tuesday afternoon, is confidential and cardinals were sworn to secrecy, but Francis received at least 77 votes, which is the minimum two-thirds required to become pope. There were 115 cardinals eligible to vote in the conclave. All were under 80 before Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI's retirement, as required by Vatican rules. In 2005, when Benedict was elected, it took two days and four votes to elect him.
Francis, whose papacy is effective immediately, will be formally installed in the coming days. It's unclear when the installation Mass will happen, but Vatican spokesman Fr. Frederico Lombardi said earlier on Wednesday that Tuesday, March 19, the feast of St. Joseph, is a possible date. He spoke before white smoke signalled news of a new pope, and it was unclear if he expected a decision on Wednesday. Lombardi also said in the same interview that the new pope would likely celebrate Mass with cardinals the morning after his election.
The date of a papal installation typically begins visit with cardinals to the grottos of St. Peter's Basilica, where the first pope, St. Peter, is said to be buried. There, the new pope is expected to say, "I leave from where the apostle arrived" before a procession to the square and an installation Mass (the Mass lasted two hours for Benedict's installation in 2005).

AP: Applying for Obamacare 'as daunting as doing taxes'...
(Yahoo) - Applying for benefits under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul could be as daunting as doing your taxes.
The government's draft application is now on the Internet.
It runs 15 pages for a three-person family. The online version has 21 steps, some with added questions.
At least three major federal agencies, including the IRS, will scrutinize your application.
That's just the first part of the process, which lets you know if you qualify for financial help.
You'd still have to pick a health plan.
Some fear that consumers will be overwhelmed and give up. Administration officials say the application form is being refined.
Still, the idea that picking a health insurance plan could be as simple as shopping on the Internet is starting to look like wishful thinking.

Dear Members and Friends, On Sunday (March 4), we commemorated the 4th Anniversary of the Independence Hall Tea Party Association with an event held on Independence Mall, the sight of the first modern/post modern Tea Party to held in the tri-state region (February 28, 2009) since December 27, 1773. |

We were very blessed to have the twenty-something Mr. Shapiro keynote the event "On Defending the Second Amendment," which was part of our (ongoing) tribute to the US Constitution, currently in its 225th Anniversary Year. His remarks were both instructive and perceptive. We were also fortunate to have Brandon Posner, a leader of the Bucks County Teeenage Republicans, give a rousing introduction of our keynote speaker to a packed ballroom of Second Amendment supporters.

| At other events, teenager Quentin Cody (Chester County native), has spoken eloquently on 'liberty'--and twenty-something Amanda Murray (Philadelphia native) has made substantial contributions behind the scenes. These outstanding young men and women are the hope and the future of our nation. |

Of course, last week's event would not have been a success without the assistance of many others, especially our partner, WNTP 990 AM and station representative Carol Healey . We would also like to thank Congressman Pat Meehan (PA-7) for his unique observations on Fast and Furious--an Obama scandal that the Congressman has worked hard to uncover. The Fast and Furious scandal should disqualify the Obama Administration from ever speaking and acting on 'gun safety' issues. As well, we are grateful to DE State Senator Dave Lawson; PA State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe; SaveJersey.com founder, Attorney Matt Rooney (another twenty-something); the Honorable Anna Little (R-NJ) and Bob's Little Sport Shop owner, Bob Viden. All provided insight into how proposed legislation in DC, Harrisburg, Dover, and Trenton might impact our rights.

A special thank you to Fran and Gene Shusman for their many contributions. The (terrific) above and below photos of Sunday's event were taken by Board Member Jerry Klein.

Call To Action
Historic March for Marriage
On March 26th, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Perry case, which will determine if Proposition 8 - the citizens initiative approved by the people of California in 2008 to protect marriage - is constitutional or not. More importantly, the question of same-sex "marriage" and the right of Americans to protect marriage will be decided.
It is imperative that political leaders, the media, and the culture see that we care about protecting marriage enough to stand up and march for it.
The Pennsylvania Family Council is sponsoring a bus to travel from Lancaster the morning of the march. For more details and to sign up, click here.
The March is being organized by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) alongside a broad coalition of pro-family organization, state partners, African-American, Latino, Catholic and Protestant leaders. Speakers include Gary Bauer (American Values), Bishop Harry Jackson, Dr. Robert George (Manhattan Declaration), Penny Nance (Concerned Women for America) and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone.
Here's the schedule of events for the March on Tuesday, March 26th:
- 8:30am - Gather at the National Mall location between 10th Street and 12th Street NW & between Madison Drive NW and Jefferson Drive SW
- 9:30am - March to Supreme Court and then return to the National Mall location.
- 11:00am - 1:00pm - Rally begins at National Mall location.
Please consider the following:
- Attend the Marriage March on the 26th.
- To sign up for the Lancaster bus, click here. For details, contact us at 717-545-0600.
- If you're able to put together another group/bus to attend the march, let us know how we may be able to help in your effort.
- If you're unable to attend, consider passing the invitation along to others who may be able to.
- Pray for the Supreme Court hearing on the definition of marriage and for those planning to attend the march.

Important Announcement from SFL
|
You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.
Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.
I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.
Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".
Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.
Click here to read my blog post on the SFL website about our first DVD.

If you've been wanting an interesting, clearly written, how-to-manual for identifying and fighting UN Agenda 21, here it is. Agenda 21--All the information you need to understand what is happening in your town, why it's happening, who is behind it, and what you can do to stop it. BEHIND THE GREEN MASK: U.N. Agenda 21 is 172 pages of truth. Part history, part current events, part hand-to-hand combat, and part blueprint for keeping your freedom, this is one book that you'll put to work immediately. Boots on the ground and all hands on deck is the order of the day. Awareness is the first step in the Resistance.
|
Awareness about Agenda 21 is finally spreading throughout the country, due in no small part to your efforts. But knowing it is there isn't enough. Now we need to educate ourselves on how to combat it. That's where you come in.
American Policy Center has recently released a booklet that explains everything you need to know to start fighting back against sustainable programs both locally and nationally. The booklet is called Special Report: Agenda 21 and How to Stop It and is available in the APC store for only $5.95.
I wrote this 35 page booklet in order to give activists a succinct resource they can refer to if they suspect Agenda 21 or Sustainable Development is being implemented in their area. It includes my own research coupled with incredibly helpful graphics created by Carroll County, Maryland Commissioner Richard Rothschild.
In the booklet you will find answers to several roadblocks that grassroots anti-Agenda 21 activists often face, including a definition of property rights and "Resolution to Protect Citizens' Property Rights," which many concerned citizens are already using to tie the hands of power hungry politicians.
This booklet is a great resource for anyone interested in preserving their property rights. It includes all the information to put up a first line of defense and step by step instructions for how to proceed from there. If you face Agenda 21 or Sustainable development in your area or are simply concerned with the national fight this booklet is a must read.

Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
- You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
- I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

Obamacare's Medicaid Trap
While Members of Congress are arguing about defunding parts of Obamacare, the rubber is meeting the road in the states. Governors and state legislatures are sweating decisions about setting up government health care exchanges and expanding the Medicaid program. While the offer of additional federal money for Medicaid is tempting for many governors and legislatures, it is a trap. And it is just one of the reasons Obamacare doesn't work. >>> STATE OF CONFUSION: Maps of State Positions on Obamacare Lawsuits, Exchanges, and Medicaid Expansion The Medicaid expansion is a crucial part of Obamacare that is supposed reduce the number of uninsured. But adding millions of people onto an already strained program doesn't help anyone. The Medicaid program is already struggling to provide care to its core obligations-a diverse group of low-income children, disabled people, pregnant women, and seniors. So dumping more people into the program will make matters worse. Research shows that Medicaid enrollees already have worse access and outcomes than privately insured individuals. This will have real effects on America's needy, including children. Dr. Hal Scherz has seen the problems Medicaid creates firsthand. He practices in the only pediatric urology group in the state of Georgia, and more than half of his practice is made up of Medicaid patients. But Medicaid already doesn't cover the costs of many procedures, and expanding the program is only going to stretch the doctors' even further-while they get paid less. It is unlikely that care providers like Dr. Scherz will be able to keep treating such high numbers of Medicaid patients under this scenario-which means less access to care for children who need it. >>> STATE BY STATE: See How Your State Fares in the Medicaid Expansion Thankfully, Georgia is not expanding Medicaid right now. But that doesn't mean Medicaid is doing well, even in states that aren't expanding. Due in part to low reimbursement, one in three doctors already refuses to accept new Medicaid patients. Medicaid is a problem for patients-and it's also a major problem for states that are struggling financially. As Heritage's Nina Owcharenko explains:
Today, Medicaid consumes over 23 percent of state budgets, surpassing education as the largest state budget item. As Medicaid spending continues to rise, other important state priorities such as education, emergency services, transportation, and criminal justice are squeezed.

RedState Morning Briefing
For March 14, 2013
1. Obamacare Will Not Crumble Without a Government Shutdown
There are many naive fools who think Obamacare will crumble under its own weight.
History shows us that government entitlements never crumble under their own weight. Rather, countries crumble under the weight of those entitlements.
Democrats were willing to lose their congressional majority to pass Obamacare. They lost the House. They came close to losing the Senate. Republicans have shown no such willingness to correct the Democrats' wrong.
As more and more Americans come to learn the costs of Obamacare, the unpopularity of the law is growing again. It is one of the few issues that have shown consistent majority opposition.
But Republicans have been unwilling to fight to kill it.
Many Republicans have said they'd wait until the next debt ceiling fight to focus on defunding Obamacare. But in case these Republicans missed it, just yesterday Speaker John Boehner said he would not risk the full faith and credit of the United States to defund Obamacare.
The continuing resolution must be the fight. The continuing resolution must be the vehicle by which Republicans draw a line in the sand. They must be willing to shut down the government until the Democrats consent to defunding Obamacare.
Paul Ryan, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy, and the rest try to obfuscate on what they can and cannot do with the present fight. They seem to think Obamacare, despite all of history showing us otherwise, will simply collapse under its own weight.
Ted Cruz managed to get 45 Republicans in the Senate to unite to defund Obamacare. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin refused to go to the Senate floor to even take a position, only to show up a couple hours laters to vote on the procedural vote. It is a strong signal that the Democrats in states who both Barack Obama and John Kerry lost could be in a very tough position on this fight.
We have the votes, but not the will, to fight this fight, filibuster the continuing resolution, and shut down the government unless the Democrats, at the least, delay implementation of Obamacare. If it gets back to the House, House conservatives must unite to kill the rule with it. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2. Trimming Deficits - The Democrat Way No wonder Democrats were recalcitrant to propose a budget over the past four years. I'd be embarrassed too. This week Washington Senator Patty Murray, as Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, introduced her budget blueprint for the next 10 years. The headline of her budget is that it achieves $1.85 trillion in deficit reduction, presumably, off the $47.2 trillion CBO baseline. Murray claims that the reductions are divided evenly between tax increases and spending cuts - $975 billion apiece. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 3. Death Squad Delusions on the Left "That lefties are accusing the new pope of handing over lefties to the right wing junta for execution makes me adore the new pope." I put that tweet up earlier today. Suddenly I'm being accused of supporting death squads, dropping people from helicopters to kill them, and many people who support killing kids in the womb are accusing me of supporting killing kids. This is what the left tries to do to those they dislike. They accuse the Pope of handing communists off to be killed by death squads and accuse me of endorsing the act because of that tweet. Actually, it is an false allegation that the Pope did that. The evidence shows that the Pope actually helped get people out of Argentina during that terrible time. He is a hero. But they hate him because he is faithful to Christ. Things of Christ are hated by things of the world and much of the left is very much of the world. The attacks on the Pope over this matter make me adore him. I'm skeptical of a Jesuit from Argentina who's been vocal about his suspicions of capitalism. But given these sustained attacks on him, I absolutely think the cardinals made the right call. I wasn't endorsing death squads. You must be delusional to think I would. But my Presbyterian self does adore this Pope just because of the smears and lies and hate directed at him by the left. If they hate him this much, he must be a good man. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 4. All of a sudden, the President says we don't have a debt crisis Presto, change-o! At the beginning of the year, we were sternly lectured that huge tax increases were absolutely necessary to confront our looming debt crisis. America was driven to the edge of the "fiscal cliff," ostensibly producing business panic that explained a fair measure of Barack Obama's permanent economic malaise, by the President's refusal to budge an inch from his demands for those deficit-fighting tax increases. During the previous years, the President insisted that this "payroll tax cut," funded by a raid on Social Security, was the vital ingredient to American economic survival. He asked citizens to send him their horror stories about how losing $60 in higher taxes from each paycheck would ruin their lives. But at the end of 2012, Obama let this supposedly crucial tax cut die without saying one single word in its defense. I mean that literally - he made absolutely no effort to protect it during "fiscal cliff" negotiations. The urgency of deficit reduction through tax increases was simply too great! . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

The old paradigm that a country has the right to decide who enters it has been decisively overturned in Europe, it's under siege in such first world countries as America, Canada, Australia and Israel by the creed that says it's the human rights obligation of every nation to accept every refugee. Given a chance a sizable portion of the third world would move to the first, a minority because of oppression and a majority because the opportunities and freebies are much better there. Even low ranked first world nations still find themselves swamped with refugees looking to move in. International law does not assign any priority to a nation's citizens over any person who happens to stray across the border. At the ground level that means the end of borders and the end of citizenship which is why immigration isn't just a touchy issue in Arizona, it's a touchy issue in Sydney, Tel Aviv and Birmingham. You can hardly open a newspaper of the liberal persuasion without being treated to another group of refugees in some troubled part of the world walled up behind fences and trying to get over to London, Sydney or New York. This sort of thing can't be called immigration anymore, it's a straightforward migration and it has no apparent limits. However many you take in, there will be more waiting and always burdening you with an unsolvable crisis. One approach is to try and stabilize whatever crisis they are supposedly escaping from. Too many Libyans running away to Italy? Just bomb their dictator and they'll go home again. At least that's the theory, it doesn't work too well in practice. For one thing Libya is more dangerous and unstable than it was under Gaddafi. Stabilizing it would require an Iraq level investment of money and manpower, and Iraq isn't stable either. And London is still full of Iraqi refugees dating back to the 1980's.

Piers Morgan: People Need Dictators and Slave Masters "Occasionally"
Piers Morgan and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's want to be dictators and slave masters. Regulating a person's diet is the regulation of a person's life. Here was Morgan's response to a guest who disagreed with him on sugary drink control:
"I think people need [these types of laws] occasionally, particularly on issues like smoking, drinking, guzzling sodas too big for them, you know, eating 16 Big Macs a day, whatever it may be, the reality is we all need a bit of nannying about that. That's why so many people are on diets. That's a form of nanny state."
When governments pass laws that force people to eat a certain way in the name of "this is good for you and society," they are not being nannies. They are being dictators and slave masters.

FDA DELAYS WARNING FOR ZITHROMAX OR Z-PAK
Just today the FDA issued a warning for azithromycin (Zithromax or Z-Pak) ten months after significant evidence showed that 5 days of this antibiotic increased the risk for cardiac death by causing cardiac arrhythmias. The same increase in death rate and cause was linked also to another antibiotic called levofloxacin (Levaquin). Patients on azithromycin or levofloxacin had two and a half times the odds of dying from a cardiovascular cause while taking their medication than did patients on amoxicillin or ciprofloxacin (Cipro). But the FDA has not yet issued a warning for levofloxacin.
If you have a choice and it is medically appropriate, ask not to take azithromycin or levofloxacin. http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1003833

Paul Ryan's Budget, Take Three
March 13, 2013
Editor's Note: Tomorrow, Mark Alexander will publish his column under the title "Bronze Star PowerPoint?" If you have read conservative news reports about an Air Force Chaplain who received the BSM for a powerpoint he developed that was subsequently adopted as part of the orientation training for incoming military and civilian OIF personnel, caveat emptor. Unfortunately, the original local news report regarding this award was not accurate, and a subsequent report by National Review Online repeated the error. Hundreds of sites have picked up the NRO report. Caught in the crossfire is LTC Jon Trainer, who did NOT receive the BSM for "developing a powerpoint appeasing our enemy" as some have framed it. Trainer is an outstanding Chaplain who has served our country with honor and integrity. Read all about it in Alexander's essay Thursday.
The Foundation
"[A] rigid economy of the public contributions and absolute interdiction of all useless expenses will go far towards keeping the government honest and unoppressive." --Thomas Jefferson
Editorial Exegesis
 | Paul Ryan |
"Paul Ryan and House Republicans are in a familiar quandary: They know that it is necessary, both economically and politically, for them to introduce a budget with reforms sufficient to place the national debt on a path toward stabilization. They also know that such a budget has only the most theoretical chance of passing Harry Reid's Democrat-controlled Senate or being signed into law by President Barack Obama. The question before them is how many steps toward fiscal rectitude they can take before the budget debate ceases to be an exercise in balancing politics with policy and becomes instead an exercise in politics exclusively. Ryan's proposal shows its best face when paired with the Democratic alternative, to be formally released by Democratic senator Patty Murray's Budget Committee [today]. The Democratic proposal contains: 1.) a tax increase of nearly $1 trillion, 2.) a new $100 billion stimulus bill, 3.) $275 billion in health-care cuts that are unlikely to be enacted, and 4.) $240 billion in military cuts that will be enacted. In exchange for all this, the Democrats' proposal achieves less than half of the deficit reduction of the Ryan plan. The Ryan plan begins with an enormous concession: While the budget calls for some important tax-code reform, the revenue line stays where it is under current law. That is, Ryan's budget grants President Obama and the Democrats their recent tax increases, including those associated with Obamacare. ... On this point, we think the Republicans made the wrong choice. Otherwise, the new Republican proposal will be in its broad strokes familiar to those who know Ryan's early proposals. ... Ryan's budget is designed to eliminate the federal deficit within ten years. That would be a remarkable achievement made more remarkable still by the fact that the budget includes no net tax increases. What Ryan's budget does not contain, it should be emphasized, is spending cuts. ... For a difference of 1.6 percentage points in the growth of federal spending, we get a balanced budget in ten years instead of a headlong rush into a debt crisis on the Greco-Spanish model. ... [T]he reality is that the continuation of Obama-scale deficits into the indeterminate future creates a brake on economic growth, certainly in the long term and likely in the present. If Barack Obama wants to hold reform hostage to his own political interests, it is not Paul Ryan and the House Republicans who are unserious." --National Review

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer
Obama's GOP Outreach "A Joke" Last week I said I was skeptical of Barack Obama's sudden outreach to congressional Republicans. Today I have an op-ed in Politico arguing that a couple of hours of "outreach" can't negate five years of demagoguery. But you don't have to take my word for it. In the past 24 hours, there have been several media reports indicating that Obama's outreach efforts are less than sincere. Ron Fournier, a veteran political reporter, was told by a senior White House official, "This is a joke. We're wasting the president's time and ours. I hope you all (in the media) are happy because we're doing it for you." Did you get that, my friends? White House officials view the outreach as a "waste of time," and they are only doing it to impress the media. That shows you not only how cynical this White House is but also how gullible the liberal media are. Obama goes to one dinner and most Washington reporters start gushing about a "charm offensive." But behind the scenes few are being charmed. In fact, a top Senate Democrat leadership aide told Politico, "Nobody is even talking about a grand bargain. It is not even on our radar right now." Why not? The Politico report persuasively argues that Obama made a big mistake in forcing Republicans to swallow a tax increase in the fiscal cliff deal. Riding high off his reelection victory, hubris got the better of him and Obama's strong-arm tactics poisoned the atmosphere on Capitol Hill. Obama thought Republicans would cave again on the sequester cuts, but they did not. And looking ahead to the 2014 elections, there is no way they will approve another tax increase. So why is Obama even bothering to go through the motions? The polls. (See next item.) Fournier reports that the White House's own internal polls showed Obama's numbers have been dropping for some time. At least two public media polls have confirmed the trend. Whatever political capital Obama had after his reelection victory is gone. Now Obama is scrambling to undo the damage in order to salvage his plans to take back the House of Representatives in 2014. Post/ABC Poll Shows Big Drop A new Washington Post / ABC News poll found a big drop in the president's support. In the past two months, Obama's job approval rating has fallen five points, while his disapproval rating is up five points. According to the poll, independents supported Mr. Obama by a 13-point margin two months ago. Now they disapprove of his job performance by a six-point margin. What also shows up in this poll is something we have argued for a long time now -- this is a narrowly divided country. On key issues, the public is split 50/50. For example, on gun control the 42% of adults trust Obama, while 41% say they trust congressional Republicans. On government spending, 44% of the public trusts congressional Republicans, while 43% side with Obama. This tells me that Republicans have got to get over their inferiority complex and do a better job of communicating the conservative position to the American people. What will Republicans gain if they listen to Big Media's left-wing spin and cave on Second Amendment rights or taxes? That said, there are some warning signs when it comes to getting spending under control. The devil is always in the details. While the public wants an end to the red ink, 71% rejected cuts to Medicaid and 60% rejected the idea of raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67. More Bad ObamaCare News The Associated Press has gotten a first look at draft forms for folks who want to apply for Obamacare. According to the AP, the process is "as daunting as doing your taxes." There are at least 15 pages and "at least three major federal agencies, including the IRS, will scrutinize your application." Best of all -- that's only the beginning of the process! If you are a pet owner, like I am, get ready to pay more at your next visit to the vet. Like the rest of us, veterinarians across the country are just starting to find out what is in Obamacare. They are learning that Obamacare's new tax on medical devices also applies to your pets, meaning that you will pay more. Gun Control Advocate Proves System Works Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), made headlines recently for buying an AR-15 style assault rifle. He told CNN that he was simply trying to prove that "public access to these [weapons] is too easy, as I demonstrated the other day." But what the liberal media failed to report was that Mr. Kelly did not walk out of the store with his assault rifle. Breitbart News contacted the gun store and discovered that Mr. Kelly attempted to purchase a trade-in rifle. Local ordinances require that such trade-in weapons be held for 20 days. The gun store's owner confirmed that he did not give the rifle to him, meaning the store fully complied with the law. If Kelly was trying to prove how easy it was to go into a gun store and walk out with an assault rifle, it seems to me that he failed. He proved that the system works. As the Breitbart story notes, if Kelly wanted to leave that day with an assault rifle, he simply needed to pick a new one rather than a trade in. This has some folks suggesting that either Mr. Kelly didn't know what he was doing or perhaps he just wanted to get the gun for himself -- while he or any American still can. Pope Francis Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected pope today. He is taking the name Francis. A Jesuit, Pope Francis is the first non-European pope. We'll have more on what Francis's election will mean for our issues in the days ahead. For now, I invite you to read a piece I've written for USA Today on why evangelicals should care about the new pope. You can read it here.

The federal budget for 2014 should accomplish six things, Heritage Foundation experts explain. These are laid out in our Saving the American Dream plan:
- Balance the budget in less than 10 years, without raising taxes, and keep the budget in balance thereafter;
- Swiftly overhaul entitlement programs, including Social Security, to guarantee economic security to seniors while making the programs affordable;
- Repeal Obamacare in its entirety;
- Fully fund defense;
- Cut discretionary spending; and
- Roll back recent tax increases with a sweeping, growth-oriented tax reform plan and caps taxes at the historical average of 18.5 percent.
So does Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-WI) new budget proposal, released today, measure up? Click here to read Heritage's Alison Fraser's analysis.
What do you think of Paul Ryan's budget?
The sequestration cuts to the armed forces don't really address the problem of wasteful Defense Department spending. In fact, The Heritage Foundation's Baker Spring explains that the indiscriminate cuts "will result in the loss of military capabilities" while doing little to curb waste.
There is a lot of waste and inefficiency in the military, and Heritage recently outlined $70 billion in annual savings. But that's not how the sequester or the Obama administration's proposals work.
These cuts would limit our nation's military capabilities, leaving the country vulnerable, while doing little to address genuine waste.
There is another way, Spring explains. The Heritage Foundation's Saving the American Dream plan would balance the budget in ten years and, Spring explains, "maintain[] sufficient funding levels for defense-well in excess of the existing Obama Administration proposal, let alone sequestration levels-in order to restore necessary U.S. military capabilities."
Do you agree that we can preserve a strong defense and still balance the budget? Tell us in the comments.
In a referendum this week, the citizens of the Falkland Islands voted overwhelmingly to remain a British territory. It wasn't close: 1,513 voted in favor and just three against.
Unfortunately, this may not settle matters. "The Obama Administration has backed Argentina's calls for a U.N.-brokered settlement for the Islands and so far has refused to recognize the outcome of the referendum," Heritage experts explain. "This policy poses serious risks to U.S. interests and is an insult both to Britain-the U.S.'s closest ally-and to the rights of the Islanders."

Do you think the Obama administration should stand with Britain?

Heritage Work of Note
- Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) has come under fire from liberals for his budget proposal, which would balance the budget in ten years. But balancing the federal budget over ten years is "hardly extreme," Heritage President-Elect Jim DeMint said yesterday on Fox News.
"I applaud Paul Ryan and the Republicans for stepping out and being willing to take the criticism," he said. Watch the video of the interview here.

"REINS Act of 2013": Promoting Jobs, Growth, and Competitiveness
Over the past few weeks, all eyes have been focused on federal spending and efforts to limit an out-of-control budget. Obscure policy terms such as "sequestration" have become household words as Congress struggles with the issue. However, federal spending is only one part of the burden imposed on Americans by the federal government. Regulations impose hundreds of billions, or even trillions, of dollars in additional costs. These burdens not only increase the prices for consumers, but keep enterprises from growing and jobs from being created. FIRM ACTION BY CONGRESS IS NEEDED >>

How Government Housing Policy Led to the Financial Crisis
Federal housing policies related to the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, have proved costly not only to the federal taxpayer, but also to the broader financial system. We should recognize their failure and move toward a U.S. mortgage market without these finance GSEs. READ WHAT THE EXPERT HAD TO SAY >>

Morning Jolt - March 13, 2013
By Jim Geraghty
Good morning. Here's your Wednesday Morning Jolt.
Enjoy!

Obama: We Don't Want a Balanced Budget Just for the Sake of Balance
When it comes to chasing a balanced budget, President Obama is not exactly Inspector Javert (or Samuel Gerard, depending on your pop-culture frame of reference). But he admitted Tuesday he was never really trying that hard:
In an exclusive interview with ABC News, President Obama rejected calls to balance the federal budget in the next ten years and instead argued that his primary economic concern was not balancing the budget, but rather growing the economy.
"My goal is not to chase a balanced budget just for the sake of balance. My goal is how do we grow the economy, put people back to work, and if we do that we are going to be bringing in more revenue," he said.
"We noticed," the guys at Weasel Zippers quip.
In the broadest sense, Obama is right: A country with the economic resources and general stability that the United States has enjoyed through much of its history can afford to run a deficit. Wiser minds than me argue that the real measuring stick is the debt-to-GDP ratio.
Our national debt is . . . $16,703,943,129,416.14, as of Monday. That's $16.7 trillion.
Our nominal GDP is $15.6 trillion. Oof.
Looking at the inflation-adjusted numbers for our annual deficit, year by year . . . you know what used to be considered "a lot"? $500 billion, in 2004. (That year, unadjusted for inflation, it came in at $413 billion.) Back in 1991, it came in at $453 billion. So a half a trillion was the pre-Obama all-time high.
Now look at the Obama era: $1.5 trillion in 2009, $1.36 trillion in 2010, $1.32 trillion in 2011, $1.1 trillion in 2012. We're supposed to be really happy that this year it might come in under a trillion, in the $900 billion range.
In other words, the best Obama has done is twice as bad as it's ever been.
No, we don't need a perfectly balanced budget - which is one of the reasons I'm pretty "meh" on the notion of a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution. But we've got to get the annual deficit something closer to "only" a couple hundred billion each year.
Anyway, if you were hoping for a grand bargain, rest assured that congressional Democrats will be every bit as helpful on entitlement reform as we've come to expect:
Some liberals challenged Obama on his frequently repeated call to include entitlement savings in any grand bargain. Sen. Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, reiterated his opposition to adopting a less generous cost-of-living formula to calculate Social Security benefits.
"We were cautioning him about that: Be careful about this grand bargain," said Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa. But, he told reporters, Obama informed them "that's something that's still open for negotiation."
Obama did not promise the caucus that he would oppose raising the eligibility age for Social Security and Medicare, an issue Harkin brought up during the meeting. "He didn't make a commitment," said Harkin, "but he seemed to indicate that yes, there are other ways of solving the entitlement problem without doing things like that."
Notice this cute line in the Washington Post's short write-up: "Obama plans to release his own budget plan in April, two months after the president is required to announce his budget priorities to Congress."
Pope-purri
I'm going to strike a dramatically different pose than most political reporters when it comes to the selection of the new pope: Admit that I don't know that much about Vatican politics, the contenders, or what to expect under the next papacy.
On this, I defer to Kathryn, reporting from Rome:
St Peter's Basilica this morning was beautifully solemn as the college of cardinals gathered in prayer. I watched each one as he walked in, so many of them praying in front of the altar, above the tomb of St. Peter, the Apostle, and first pope. I noticed that the Archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Tagle, looks even younger than I heard he did. I watched as a subdued Cardinal Dolan tended to older brothers. I couldn't help but notice that nothing was going to distract the prayer of Raymond Cardinal Burke, the American in the Vatican court. Quebec's Cardinal Ouellet gently fixed the miter on the cardinal in front of him. Cardinal George looked pained from his battle with cancer.
The Mass was a prayer that the Holy Spirit might truly guide the hearts and minds of the men now in the Sistine Chapel. The expression of gratitude for Pope Benedict XVI was palpable; the basilica seemed to rock with the applause, as if Bernini and Michelangelo were expressing theirs, too. . . .
Love and mercy. Knowing our roles. Living the will of God in truth. If the cardinals lead by that, shepherding a people in love with the Gospel, the world will have great gift.
One aspect of all this that I think resonates deeply, well beyond the boundaries of Catholicism, is the experience of witnessing an institution that follows tradition going back two millennia.
We live in a world in which newer is considered better than older, and the definition of "old" seems to get younger every year.
The world changes fast. Walk through your old neighborhoods, and you see buildings torn down and built upon and replaced, beloved hangouts long gone. On one level or another, most of us have had our childhood homes turned into Ultimarts. The older generation passes away, old friends move away and we lose touch. A time and a place, a mood and relationships, preserved only in a dusty photo album full of Polaroids.
Each day brings us some ephemeral distraction, sometimes pleasant, often less than that, rarely built to last or to stand the test of time. Suddenly we're supposed to care what the Harlem Shake is, when we know that in a couple months almost everyone will forget about it. Toss it next to the other forgotten fads, next to the Macarena and the Cabbage Patch dolls.
Our political scene is a rapidly-spinning wheels of rotating, rapidly-replaced flavors of the month. Would you believe Tom Vilsack once ran for president? Faces come and go, burning white-hot one moment, easily forgotten the next: Howard Dean, Sarah Palin, Herman Cain, Bill Bradley. John Kasich ran for president. Pat Buchanan. Ross Perot. Jerry Brown. Tom Harkin.
And then, in the middle of all this, there's the Vatican and the cardinals. Somehow they combine immense theatricality - there's a reason that all of the networks have sent their anchors to do live shots from St. Peter's Square - with a methodology that is from another time and place. They don't issue a press release, they don't release a YouTube video, or send a tweet. All around the world, people watch for smoke from a chimney.
And barring some massive leak, we never hear how it went inside. No declared candidates, no campaigning, no vote totals. The past few weeks you've heard the easy jokes projecting American ideas of leadership selection - attack ads, debates, super PACs - onto the conclave.
The Church is not a democracy, and that factor probably exacerbates some problems - a sense of not enough accountability, or a leadership that feels distant and out of touch with the daily life of the faithful Catholics around the world. But it is stirring to see an institution that places something above popularity. We're a world that revolves around public relations, job-approval ratings, television ratings, page views, and so on, and here's an institution that says, "sure, we want to be popular and reach every soul . . . but we're not going to compromise our principles to do it. In fact, we're not going to compromise on any of our most unpopular ideas. We focus on being morally right, and we have faith that everyone else will come around to our way of thinking."
Welcome to Your New Job, Chuck Hagel
The Los Angeles Times checks in on the man whom President Obama and most Senate Democrats deemed the man most qualified and most ready to run the Pentagon:
Overall, Hagel's three-day visit to Afghanistan was marred by a suicide bombing and security threats in the heart of Kabul, a canceled news conference that was expected to highlight progress in the war, and heated accusations by Afghan President Hamid Karzai that the U.S. military was colluding with the Taliban to prolong the American troop presence.
Hagel has seemed low-key and at times unsure of himself since he won a bitter Senate confirmation battle Feb. 27. His reaction to his early burdens is tough to gauge, but he has yet to show the sparks that earned him maverick status when he served as a Republican senator from Nebraska who took controversial positions and issued blunt assessments, no matter the consequences.
When pressed for his reaction to Karzai's claim that the U.S. was working with the Taliban, Hagel said he had told Karzai it wasn't true. But he voiced not even a gentle protest in public at the incendiary charge that America was selling out an ally it has lost thousands of lives defending for the last 12 years.
"I was once a politician so I can understand the pressures that especially leaders of countries are always under," Hagel said at a news conference. He said he spoke "clearly and directly" with Karzai. "And I think he understands where we are and where we've been and hopefully where we're going together."
Yes, the task before him is enormous. That's one of the reasons we were so skeptical that Hagel would be ready from Day One.
ADDENDUM: Some days I can come up with a graphic that illuminates an important point that I want to spread virally.
Other days, not so much:

COMMENTARY: Sixty-Four Percent of Schoolchildren Fed on Federal Subsidies By Terence P. Jeffrey Not so long ago in this republic, most parents of school-age children would frequently visit grocery stores where they would use their own money to buy things like peanut butter and jelly, and bologna and cheese to make lunches for their kids to haul to school in brown paper bags. It was an American tradition. Now, like other great things about America, brown-bag lunches are being driven to extinction by politicians seeking inordinate government control over our lives.
