CSCOPE: Exposing the Nation's Most Controversial Public School Curriculum System

The Blaze | Tiffany Gabbay | Mar. 7, 2013 7:50pm

Exposing the Nation's Most Controversial Public School Curriculum System In February, Texas announced that the state, along with the Texas Education Service Center Curriculum (TESCCC,) would enact major changes to the controversial curriculum management system dubbed CSCOPE. The system received a litany of complaints from faculty members and parents alike concerning its lack of transparency (parents were allegedly not permitted to review lesson-plans), lack of oversight from the State Board of Education, and for allegedly imposing oppressive working conditions for faculty members.

CSCOPE was created so that teachers could frame their year around teaching points required by the state. Lessons, which are written by CSCOPE staff and current and former teachers, can be updated and delivered online, making it more cost-effective than standard textbooks.

To note just how off-color some of the CSCOPE curriculum is, consider that the Texas CSCOPE Review, an independent watchdog group, uncovered an out-of-date, optional CSCOPE lesson-plan on terrorism - "World History Unit 12 Lesson 07" - which allegedly likens the Boston Tea Party to "an act of terrorism."

The system also recently asked students to design a flag for a new socialist nation.

To glean greater insight, Glenn Beck invited special guests David Barton and Pat Gray, along with teachers Mary Bowen, Stan Hartzler and Texas State Sen. Dan Patrick to discuss what is truly going on within their state's education system.

Barton explained that CSCOPE is referred to as "instructional material" and not "curriculum," therefore is not subject to regulation by the State Board of Education. The historian also brought in artifacts of Texas public school curriculum to showcase just how different it is today and to mark, year-by-year, the increasing application of political correctness in lesson plans.

Republicans Call for Military Trial of bin Laden Son-in-Law

By Bill Hoffmann and Todd Beamon | Friday, 08 Mar 2013 01:02 PM

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, a senior al-Qaida leader and son-in-law of Osama bin Laden The federal government's decision to try Osama bin Laden's son-in-law, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, in the United States - specifically New York City - has sparked outrage.

Republican lawmakers say legal precedent has been established for "enemy combatants" to be put on trial at Guantanamo Bay, and that vital intelligence could be lost in a civilian trial, NBC News reported Thursday.

"We believe the administration's decision here to bring this person to New York City, if that's what's happened, without letting Congress know, is a very bad precedent to set," South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said in a statement.

He added Republicans are putting the Obama administration "on notice. We think that sneaking this guy into the country, clearly going around the intent of Congress when it comes to enemy combatants, will be challenged."

On the Anniversary of the Nazi Invasion, This Is What Austrians Are Saying About Hitler

The Blaze | Sharona Schwartz | Mar. 10, 2013 10:56am

What Austrians Are Saying About Hitler Seventy-five years after the Nazi invasion and occupation of Austria, a newspaper in country has asked citizens about their opinion of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi annexation during World War II. Jewish leaders who have been raising the alarm about anti-Semitism in Austria say the results were not surprising.

Forty-two percent said life was not all bad under Hitler, while 61 percent said they would be interested in a strong-armed leader who did not have to deal with democratic challenges like political opponents and elections. The survey, published this weekend, is getting prominent play in the media in Israel, which is home to some 250,000 Holocaust survivors. That's half the number of survivors who arrived in the country since Israel was founded in 1948.

Additionally, 54 percent said they believed neo-Nazi groups would succeed in Austrian elections this September if they were not banned there.

The poll also showed that most Austrians believe their country has dealt adequately with its Nazi history and that victims of the Holocaust have been fully compensated.

Colorado Sheriff Says Dems Are Using Salary Threats to Pressure Sheriffs to Support Gun Control Bills

The Blaze | Mike Opelka | Mar. 10, 2013 10:08am

Dems Are Using Salary Threats to Pressure Sheriffs to Support Gun Control

One Colorado sheriff is claiming that Democrats are pressuring pro-gun sheriffs in the state with tactics he think border on extortion.

In a radio interview with KVOR on Saturday, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said he received an email last week with a threat to stop or stall pay raises to the state's elected sheriffs if they don't support Colorado's pending gun control legislation.

The email, sent from the offices of the County Sheriffs of Colorado, "basically said, Dem. leadership is very upset with the sheriffs and their opposition to the gun control bills," Maketa said.

He claimed it said the Democrats were threatening to delay legislation that would give the sheriffs a long-delayed pay raise if they continue to speak out against the new push for more gun control laws.

Historic March for Marriage

On March 26th, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Perry case, which will determine if Proposition 8 - the citizens initiative approved by the people of California in 2008 to protect marriage - is constitutional or not. More importantly, the question of same-sex "marriage" and the right of Americans to protect marriage will be decided.

The March is being organized by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) alongside a broad coalition of pro-family organization, state partners, African-American, Latino, Catholic and Protestant leaders. SFL Logo
Important Announcement from SFL

You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.

Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.

I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.

Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".

Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.

Click here to read my blog post on the SFL website about our first DVD.

Helping you fight back,
John

If you've been wanting an interesting, clearly written, how-to-manual for identifying and fighting UN Agenda 21, here it is. Agenda 21--All the information you need to understand what is happening in your town, why it's happening, who is behind it, and what you can do to stop it. BEHIND THE GREEN MASK: U.N. Agenda 21 is 172 pages of truth. Part history, part current events, part hand-to-hand combat, and part blueprint for keeping your freedom, this is one book that you'll put to work immediately. American Policy Center

Awareness about Agenda 21 is finally spreading throughout the country, due in no small part to your efforts. But knowing it is there isn't enough. Now we need to educate ourselves on how to combat it. That's where you come in.

American Policy Center has recently released a booklet that explains everything you need to know to start fighting back against sustainable programs both locally and nationally. The booklet is called Special Report: Agenda 21 and How to Stop It and is available in the APC store for only $5.95.

I wrote this 35 page booklet in order to give activists a succinct resource they can refer to if they suspect Agenda 21 or Sustainable Development is being implemented in their area. It includes my own research coupled with incredibly helpful graphics created by Carroll County, Maryland Commissioner Richard Rothschild.

In the booklet you will find answers to several roadblocks that grassroots anti-Agenda 21 activists often face, including a definition of property rights and "Resolution to Protect Citizens' Property Rights," which many concerned citizens are already using to tie the hands of power hungry politicians.

This booklet is a great resource for anyone interested in preserving their property rights. It includes all the information to put up a first line of defense and step by step instructions for how to proceed from there. If you face Agenda 21 or Sustainable development in your area or are simply concerned with the national fight this booklet is a must read.

The store also offers DVDs of past successful conferences and symposiums, books and articles that deal with the issues of sustainability and Agenda 21 and individually packaged manuals and workbooks to aid you in your activism. The Agenda

Please watch and share

If you want to understand what is happening to our beloved country please watch this important movie.  Please share it with everyone.

We Were Warned in 1963: Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America?

sickleflagHas Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.

Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.

If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:

useful

  1. You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
  2. I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.

Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.

This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

Act for America

Yes, it's true: You can support ACT! for America-at no cost to you!     An important message from
Guy Rodgers, Executive Director

The next time you make an online purchase of almost anything, you could be helping ACT! for America-at no cost to you.

Sound too good to be true? It isn't.

All you have to do is sign up for "iGive"-a program that's been around since 1997.

The concept is as powerful as it is simple.

Every time an iGive member makes an online purchase at over 1,000 brand-name stores, a percentage of that purchase is donated to that person's charity of choice.

And with the holidays just around the corner, you could be helping ACT! for America with every gift you buy!

The concept isn't new. In the mid-1990s many supporters of non-profit organizations signed up with long distance telephone programs where a percentage of their bill was donated to their charity of choice.

But our investigation of iGive has convinced us that this program has an ease of use and sophistication that we find remarkable.

  • Imagine booking a hotel room on Orbitz-and having 1.6% of that purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
  • Or buying an Xbox at Best Buy-and having 1.2% of the purchase price donated to ACT! for America.

The same goes for buying merchandise at Amazon, Bath and Body Works, Advance Auto Parts, Game Stop, Kmart, Home Depot, Holiday Inn, Old Navy, NASCAR Superstore, Overstock.com, Mattel, J.C. Penney, Office Max, QVC, Radio Shack, Shoe Carnival, Pottery Barn-and on and on the list goes.

In other words, every time you make a purchase of merchandise you would buy anyway, you would be financially supporting ACT! for America!

All you have to do is log on below and follow the directions to create your account and download the iGive "button." (Note: downloading the "button" is key).

Get Started Here!

When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems.

So I spent hours researching.

I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.

And the more I dug, the more I liked what I saw. For instance, both of my tech support questions were responded to within 60 minutes. How often does THAT happen?

As you know from our Patriot Partner program, we're all about encouraging a lot of people to each do a little-to do something. When everyone does a little, together we accomplish a lot.

So consider what could happen.

If just 1% of ACT! for America members each purchased just $400 in merchandise in 2013, from all the available outlets, and the average percentage donated to ACT! was 1.5%, the total amount donated back to ACT! for America would be...

...$15,000. That's a lot of money, wouldn't you agree?

And if you were one of those ACT! for America members, it wouldn't cost you one thin dime to help ACT! for America receive $15,000.

If this idea really caught on, and eventually 5% of our members made purchases with iGive, that $15,000 could explode to $50,000, $75,000 or more!

What's more, that 1.5% figure might be low. Many of the merchants offer percentage donations that are much higher. One printer inkjet company I looked at offered 13%!

Every merchant website you visit tells you right at the top what percentage of your purchase price will be donated to ACT! for America.

Just think what we could accomplish with an extra $15,000, $50,000 or $75,000 in our fight against radical Islam!

Get Started Here!

One of the things I most wanted to know was their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Check it out for yourself. I confirmed the terms with a company representative. And I like what I learned. As security-conscious as I am, I have no hesitation using the service-and I'm already doing so.

I know there are many people out there who would love to support ACT! for America, or give more than they're giving, but in these tough economic times they simply can't.

Well, here's a way that everyone who believes in our mission can easily support what we're doing-at no cost to them.

It doesn't get any better than that.

There are already chapter leaders who have signed up for the program, and the feedback I have been getting from them has been all positive. They love the idea and many of them are already using it.

So please, join me and these ACT! for America chapter leaders who are already signed up and using the iGive service.

Yours for a safe and free America

Guy Rodgers

Calvin Coolidge and the Moral Case for Economy

Amity Shlaes
Author, Coolidge

AMITY SHLAES is a syndicated columnist for Bloomberg, a director of the Four Percent Growth Project at the George W. Bush Presidential Center, and a member of the board of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation. She has served as a member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal and as a columnist for the Financial Times, and is a recipient of the Hayek Prize and the Frederic Bastiat Prize for free-market journalism. She is the author of four books, Germany: The Empire Within, The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression, The Greedy Hand: How Taxes Drive Americans Crazy and What to Do About It, and Coolidge.

The following is adapted from a talk given at Hillsdale College on January 27, 2013, during a conference on "The Federal Income Tax: A Centenary Consideration," co-sponsored by the Center for Constructive Alternatives and the Ludwig von Mises Lecture Series.

separator

With the Federal Debt spiraling out of control, many Americans sense an urgent need to find a political leader who is able to say "no" to spending. Yet they fear that finding such a leader is impossible. Conservatives long for another Ronald Reagan. But is Reagan the right model? He was of course a tax cutter, reducing the top marginal rate from 70 to 28 percent. But his tax cuts-which vindicated supply-side economics by vastly increasing federal revenue-were bought partly through a bargain with Democrats who were eager to spend that revenue. Reagan was no budget cutter-indeed, the federal budget rose by over a third during his administration.

An alternative model for conservatives is Calvin Coolidge. President from 1923 to 1929, Coolidge sustained a budget surplus and left office with a smaller budget than the one he inherited. Over the same period, America experienced a proliferation of jobs, a dramatic increase in the standard of living, higher wages, and three to four percent annual economic growth. And the key to this was Coolidge's penchant for saying "no." If Reagan was the Great Communicator, Coolidge was the Great Refrainer.

RedState Morning Briefing

RedState Morning Briefing

For March 11, 2013

1.  The So Called Adults Within the GOP Are Stupid

I realize there are those within the Republican Party who do not like Rush Limbaugh. Some of them even think the GOP is worse because of him.

Likewise, there are those within the GOP who say they like Rush and see "a use" for him, but they themselves do not like listening to him. He's just not their cup of tea or something.

These people should really spend a week listening to Rush three hours a day and perhaps they would not be so stupid.

Most of the people who fall into these camps have been mouthing off on two topics about which their commentary has been decidedly stupid. Perhaps if they were students of the Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies they'd wise up.  . . . please click here for the rest of the post

2.  House Conservatives Must be Willing to Change Their Minds

If the GOP ever starts getting an accurate whip count on these rules and they know conservatives are against them, they will start modifying the rules to woo House Democrats over. House Republican leaders are routinely breaking the Hastert rule these days. They are passing legislation that does not have majority Republican support and relying on Democrat votes to get it passed.

House conservatives are nuts if they think leadership won't start doing this with the rules.  . . . please click here for the rest of the post

3.  Alternate New York Times Headline: 'Global Warming Saves Civilization

Like Beauty, the interpretation of scientific data is often in the eye of the beholder. I'm an engineer with more than a smattering of book-learning in the geologic sciences. It has always struck me as appalling that the scientists who would reorder our very lives around their interpretation of climate science and its implications for our future have so little interest in earth history and the geologic time scale. The climate alarmist community seems to focus on anecdotes and anomalous weather patterns that we can observe over the course of a human lifespan but have a vauge explanation for abrupt and dramatic changes in the distant past.

But in terms of the geologic time scale, human history is the blink of an eye compared the 4.5 billion year age of the earth. The end of the last ice age, a monumental, undeniably non-anthropogenic warming event, happened about 12,000 years ago; to a geologist it may as well have happened a week ago last Thursday. Yet climate scientists rarely address the implications of that warming event on their modern-day warming theories.

But this week, a new study came out which alarmingly concludes that CO2-forced temperatures are at or near their Holocene (post ice age) maximum.

One could look at the same data and wonder how cold we might be if not for Global Warming. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

4.  "Climate change" cools off

This week, Bloomberg News reported that "almost 90 percent of insurance companies lack a comprehensive plan to address climate change, and fewer than half of them view it as a likely source of financial losses."  The demon lords of global warming are no longer fearsome enough to command billions of dollars, and thousands of jobs, in sacrifice - not when voters worry that something has gone deeply, badly wrong with their economy. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

Heritage Foundation Morning Bell

03/11/2013

Amy Payne | March 11, 2013 at 5:46 am

It's time for Congress to make a real budget-and not just any budget.

It's been four years since the U.S. had a real budget. While the House of Representatives has passed budgets, the Senate has stopped each one. Instead, the Senate under Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has done short-term, stopgap measures to keep the government funded year after year.

But this year, Reid and others have said they are going to step up and do their job.

The President's budget is already late-by two months-and will not appear until early April, according to the White House. To get things started, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) will unveil his fiscal year 2014 budget tomorrow.

Heritage's Alison Acosta Fraser and Patrick Louis Knudsen, the Grover M. Hermann Senior Fellow in Federal Budgetary Affairs, have a blueprint for what that budget should look like if we are to have any hope of reclaiming economic growth and digging out of the hole we're in. They make the case that the budget should do six things.

1. Balance. Achieve balance within 10 years, and stay in balance.

2. Defend America. Fully fund national defense.

3. Reform Entitlements. Reform the major entitlement programs (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security) with real policy changes that improve the programs, eliminate their shortcomings, and make them affordable.

4. Repeal Obamacare.

5. Cut Spending. Reduce non-defense discretionary spending.

6. Reform Taxes. Adopt growth-oriented tax reform capped at the historical level of taxation.

Getting Rich by Fighting for the Poor

Hugo Chavez's death was met with tributes from Iran, Bolivia, China and El Salvador. The Western left did not waste much time adding their withered roses to El Comandante's coffin. George Galloway called him another Spartacus. Jimmy Carter described him as a leader who fought for the "neglected and trampled". Michael Moore praised him for declaring that the oil belongs to the people.

Whether or not the oil belongs to the people is a matter of some debate considering how much of it seemed to end up in Chavez's pocket.

Chavez died with an estimated net worth of 2 billion dollars making him the 4th richest man in Venezuela and the 49th richest man in Latin America. For a while, Chavez weathered attacks from the media empire of Gustavo A. Cisneros, the richest man in Venezuela. Then before the 2004 election, their mutual friend Jimmy Carter brokered an agreement between them. Cisneros' media stopped criticizing Chavez and both men bent to the task of getting even richer.

While the Bolivarian Spartacus lined his pockets with oil money, Venezuela's middle-class was struggling to get by in a country where the private sector had imploded. Income increased on paper, but decreased in reality as inflation increases ate the difference. Around the same time that Comrade Hugo was launching the third phase of his Bolivarian Revolution, inflation had decreased household income 8.8 percent while consumer goods prices increased 27 percent.

On his deathbed, Hugo Chavez devalued his country's currency for the fifth time by 32 percent, after tripling the deficit during his previous term when the national debt had increased by 90 percent. From 2008 to 2011, Chavez's oil-rich government increased the debt by nearly 50 billion in a country of less than 30 million. That same year, The Economist speculated that Venezuela might go bankrupt.

Obama Puts Ideology Ahead Of National Security

Even when Barack Obama does something right, he still manages to get it wrong!

Last night news broke that we had captured Sulaiman Abu Ghaith -- Osama bin Laden's son-in-law. Abu Ghaith was involved in planning the 9/11 attacks and served as a spokesman for Al Qaeda, urging Muslims to wage jihad against the West after the attacks.

His capture is good news. One intelligence expert described Abu Ghaith as being one of the few remaining Al Qaeda leaders "capable of getting the old band back together."

Unfortunately, the Obama Administration made the decision to sneak Abu Ghaith into the country, rather than send him to the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Abu Ghaith appeared in a federal court this morning in Manhattan under intense security. Once again, this administration has put its ideology ahead of national security and ignored the will of Congress in the process.

When the Obama Administration announced plans in early 2009 to close Gitmo and transfer top Al Qaeda terrorists to the United States for trials in civilian courts, there was a huge backlash from the public and the then Democratically-controlled Congress. In May 2009 the Senate voted 90-to-6 to keep Gitmo open. And for good reason!

Senator Rand Paul had to launch a 13-hour filibuster to get this administration to acknowledge that it would be unconstitutional to target U.S. citizens in America with drone strikes. That's because U.S. citizens have rights here. But the Obama administration didn't think twice about bringing bin Laden's son-in-law into the country and giving him all the rights of American citizens. I suspect they read him his Miranda rights too.

As Fox News noted, his trial could last years and, "some of the evidence against Abu Ghaith will be a challenge for prosecutors to bring to court if it is classified." When Obama first suggested bringing the Al Qaeda thugs to the U.S., New York City officials were opposed to the idea because of the potential security nightmare. Well this isn't just any one of the Gitmo thugs -- it's Osama bin Laden's son-in-law.

As Sen. Lindsey Graham said yesterday, if Abu Ghaith isn't an enemy combatant, who is? He should be in Gitmo, where he can be questioned for intelligence purposes. No doubt he now has a legion of ACLU attorneys advising him to remain silent.

Reagan And Bush Were Right

This week North Korea's Kim Jong Un rejected the ceasefire agreement with South Korea and threatened to launch a preemptive nuclear strike against the United States. While North Korea has nuclear bombs, most experts do not believe it has yet mastered the technology needed to put a warhead on a missile. It is tempting to ignore Kim's bluster, but it is dangerous to ignore delusional dictators.

In response to the threat, White House spokesman Jay Carney said, "I can tell you that the United States is fully capable of defending against any North Korean ballistic missile attack." That's reassuring, and I certainly hope Carney is correct. But I must have missed his thank you.

If the United States is capable of defending itself against ballistic missile attacks, it is in spite of Obama and his left-wing allies. God forbid, but if the day ever comes that when tens of thousands of Americans are saved from such an attack, it will happen largely because of the leadership of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative -- intended to save Americans from nuclear weapons -- was mercilessly mocked by our liberal elites as a "Star Wars fantasy." But the technology took off, leading to the Patriot missile batteries and the Iron Dome system that is protecting Israeli civilians today.

And George W. Bush had the courage to pull the United States out of a bad treaty that limited its potential. He also maintained funding for missile defense against fierce liberal opposition, and negotiated agreements to set up defensive systems to protect our European allies from Iran -- agreements Barack Obama broke.

All Votes Now In -- Obama Lost

That got your attention, didn't it?

No, not Barack Obama, but Roy Abong'o Malik Obama, his half-brother. Malik Obama ran for a local office in Kenya. He had hoped his popular last name might translate into a political career, but he lost, finishing a distant third.

He blames his poor showing on voter fraud and bad publicity, such as this report from a British newspaper. But perhaps low information voters in Kenya are just smarter than low information voters in U.S.

March For Marriage

On March 26th the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case seeking to define the definition of marriage. Just as it did with abortion, which the left used the Supreme Court to impose its morality on the people, it is once again hoping that the high court will invalidate the will of millions of Americans and force same-sex "marriage" on every state in the union.

You and I may not have a vote in the Supreme Court, but we can still make our voice heard!

Join me in our nation's capital on Tuesday, March 26th for the March for Marriage. I am proud to co-sponsor the March for Marriage along with the National Organization for Marriage and other pro-family organizations.

Please share this report with like-minded friends, family members and fellow worshippers, and encourage them to attend. Visit MarriageMarch.org for handouts, talking points, a schedule of the day's events and more.

John Brennan Sworn In On Constitution Without Bill Of Rights, Not Bible

8539033959_ec46e87578Newly confirmed Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan took his oath in a swearing ceremony that was highly unusual. Brennan was not sworn in on a Bible. He was sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden on a "first draft" of the Constitution, which does not contain the Bill of Rights.

The first draft included notations from George Washington. While this might sound historic and patriotic. It is anything but that.

NEW ON PJ MEDIA
Sometimes, the smallest things can be the most revealing. On Tuesday, we learned that President Barack Obama's administration, in response to spending "cuts" imposed by sequestration, decided to cancel all tours of the White House beginning March 9. The only conceivable conclusion to draw from all of this is that Barack Obama and his administration don't care about any suffering their deliberately destructive and disruptive decisions will cause if they believe that they can exploit the related pain for political gain.

Most of his life, Sen. John McCain has been a disgrace to his service, the Congress and to his country. The GOP cannot hope to win another national election unless and until it retires flawed, easily caricatured men like John McCain - and never nominates them again.

TOP STORIES ON PJ MEDIA
Sen. Rand Paul emerged from his filibuster feat with more than just a brief response on domestic drone strikes from Attorney General Eric Holder, which the lawmaker lauded as a victory. In just a couple of years in the Senate, he has moved the ball further on a viable presidential run for a self-described libertarian candidate than his father, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), did in two presidential tries.

The nostrums of gun control will have unintended consequences that will only perpetuate a black market in guns, criminalize otherwise law-abiding citizens, and open a gateway to the acquisition of real assault rifles. Of course, for liberals bent on feel-good solutions to complex problems, these are the "solutions" that will be forced upon us. Meanwhile, the next Hadiya Pendleton will only be an uncompromised drive-by away from the trigger pulled by another teenager on a gun that is already illegal.

Media silence on race makes things worse

Mar 10, 2013 06:13 am | Coach Collins

By Derrick Hollenbeck, staff writer

Since America is more than seventy percent White, an honest media would present lots of stories about minorities, especially Blacks victimizing Whites even as they demand more money from them; but of course they don't. The media doesn't concern itself with the truth about Black on White crime. It has become virtually axiomatic that stories about violent crimes omit the race of the perpetrator even when it is known and would be helpful in capturing him.

While statistics about Black on White crime tell the worst of the story, most Whites have instinctively learned to stay off their town's "Martin Luther King Boulevard" for their own safety. Nevertheless, that strategy has its limitations. Large cities have seen their centers became minority enclaves and it is woe to those Whites who innocently and/or naively wander into such areas even during daylight.

A recent "Philly" magazine article talks about the dangers Whites ... Continue Reading:Media silence on race makes things worse

Who looks after America's unsung heroes?

Mar 09, 2013 05:13 am | Coach Collins

by Jim Emerson, staff writer

The word "heroic" is perhaps the most overused adjective in modern day lexicon, too often heaped upon people who are neither brave nor worthy of particular praise. Far too many actors and athletes are called heroes for doing what they are paid to do or for engaging in publicity stunts for the purpose of garnering the attention and acclaim of an easily impressed public. Such faux heroes are clearly nothing like the firefighter who has entered a burning building, the cop who runs into harm's way or the soldier who has been deployed into a warzone.

Caregivers

According to a recently released RAND study it is estimated as many as a million Americans selflessly serve as caregivers for wounded troops. (1) Families of wounded warriors deal with tremendous stress that comes from the emotional and physical demands of caring for disabled vets. They are the unsung heroes that the press and the ... Watching the Affordable Care Act Unfold (Or Maybe Unravel)

Mar 08, 2013 05:13 am | Coach Collins

by Michael D. Shaw

Americans will remember the oft-repeated promise made by Obama in 2008, whereby health insurance premiums for American families would be cut by $2500, and this would occur within his first term. Presumably, he based this contention on a memo written for his campaign in May, 2007 by three well-regarded experts from Harvard: David Blumenthal, David Cutler, and Jeffrey Liebman.

As they stated:

Combining all of these effects-from improved health IT, better disease management, reduced insurance overhead, reinsurance, and reduced uncompensated care -under our "best-guess" assumptions, we estimate that businesses will save $140 billion annually in insurance premiums. The typical family will save $2500 per year.

In reality, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone whose premiums have decreased. Rather, according to the latest annual Kaiser Family Foundation employee health benefits survey, premiums for employer-provided family coverage rose $3065-a 24% increase from 2008 to 2012. Looking only at the period after ACA became law, ... Continue Reading:Watching the Affordable Care Act Unfold (Or Maybe Unravel)

Academia's lost soul

Mar 07, 2013 01:00 pm | Coach Collins

by Gerald V. Todd, staff writer

From the time the Catholic Church established the university system in the so-called Dark Ages, when scientific method was devised at the Cathedral School at Chartres, lively exchange of ideas in science, philosophy, theology, law and the arts has been the fuel to advance Western Civilization. Built on the best of Roman and Greek civilizations, she made course corrections that ultimately draw on the promise of redemption God gave our first parents. Adam and Eve paid the price for their own failure to exercise their authority over creation given to humanity made in His image and likeness. Cain's and Abel's have contested in the search for truth ever since. No human endeavor or institution is now or ever has been exempt from this struggle between good and evil. Our job is to do something about it as good stewards, not mockers and penalizers.

Today, Academia's gift to civilization is not lively discourse in ... Continue Reading:Academia's lost soul

Morning Jolt - March 8, 2013

By Jim Geraghty

Happy Friday!

Here's your Morning Jolt.

Jim

What We Learned from Rand Paul, and Must Continue to Learn

Phil Klein on Rand Paul's filibuster, and what it revealed about Obama:

A lot of the outpouring of conservative support for Paul's filibuster on Obama's drone policy went beyond the libertarian and anti-interventionist blocs of the movement who were also deeply troubled by Bush era counter-terrorism policies. Even those conservatives who may not agree with all of Paul's views on presidential war powers were supportive if for no other reason than they relished seeing a conservative win a messaging war with Obama. It was impossible to dismiss this as just a right-wing Tea Party attack, because a lot of liberals agree with the substance of Paul's criticism. This filibuster had to get under Obama's skin. As much as anything else, he was elected on a promise to turn the page on the Bush era and conduct the war against terrorism with greater concern for civil liberties. Watching Paul's filibuster last night, I couldn't help but think that this is how Obama imagines himself -  a principled crusader for justice. When Bush and Cheney were running the show, whatever could be said about them, at least they were consistent in supporting broad presidential powers in the realm of national security. But it's hard to look back at the pre-2009 Obama and see him as anything other than an arrogant hypocrite now - somebody who thinks a muscular executive branch is okay so long as he's running it.

Many - not all, but many - folks on the right looked at Obama early on and figured that it was all or mostly a pose, that the junior senator with the messianic media coverage was not leading public opinion but riding it and adjusting himself to fit its preferences.  As some of us pointed out, all statements from him come with an expiration date, which is the moment those statements become politically inconvenient. Or, as one of my favorite writers pointed out in May 2009:

Moderates thought they were electing a moderate; liberals thought they were electing a liberal. Both camps were wrong. Ideology does not have the final say in Obama's decision-making; an Alinskyite's core principle is to take any action that expands his power and to avoid any action that risks his power.

As conservatives size up their new foe, they ought to remember: It's not about liberalism. It's about power. Obama will jettison anything that costs him power, and do anything that enhances it - including invite Rick Warren to give the benediction at his inauguration, dine with conservative columnists, and dismiss an appointee at the White House Military Office to ensure the perception of accountability.

Now, let's all take positioning and messaging notes from Paul. He fought his battle on the most favorable territory possible: that the U.S. president cannot assert the authority to kill an American citizen who is on U.S. soil with a drone without a trial.

He didn't oppose all use of drones, at least in this filibuster.

He didn't even oppose the use of drones to kill American citizens overseas, like Awlaki.

By the way, apparently Senator Dick Durbin paid absolutely no attention to any of that, because in his objection to Rand Paul, he kept invoking Osama bin Laden.

Who isn't an American citizen.

Who wasn't on U.S. soil.

Who was, in fact, indicted in U.S. court.

Understaffed America

One of the first victims of the Great Recession was service. I don't know about you, but with disturbing regularity I get seated in restaurants . . . and we sit there . . . waiting for someone to greet us, bring menus, ask if we want anything to drink . . . and we're left waiting for a seemingly interminable time. It's as if our waiter suddenly retired. Or, you know, it's like we're in Europe.

Peggy Noonan is noticing the same thing.

It's not a debt and deficit crisis, it's a jobs crisis. The debt and the deficit are part of it, part of the general fear that we're on a long slide and can't turn it around. The federal tax code is part of it-it's a drag on everything, a killer of the spirit of guts and endeavor. Federal regulations are part of it. The administration's inability to see the stunning and historic gift of the energy revolution is part of it.

But it's a jobs crisis that's the central thing. And you see it everywhere you look.

I'm in Pittsburgh, making my way to the airport hotel. The people movers are broken and we pull our bags along the dingy carpet. There's an increasing sense in America now that the facades are intact but the machinery inside is broken.

The hotel has entrances on two floors. I search for the lobby, find it. Travelers are milling about, but there's no information desk, no doorman, no bellman or concierge, just two harried-looking workers at a front desk on the second level. The man who checked me in put his phones on hold when I asked for someone to accompany me upstairs...

Things are getting pretty bare-bones in America. Doormen, security, bellmen, people working the floor-that's maybe a dozen jobs that should have been filled, at one little hotel on one day in one town. Everyone's keeping costs down, not hiring.

What that hotel looked like is America without its muscle, its efficiency, its old confidence.

There are a lot of reasons for this . . . but we've added one more reason for a company to try to hobble along with fewer workers than they normally would:

Under ObamaCare, employers with 50 or more full-time workers must provide health insurance for all their workers, paying at least 65% of the cost of a family policy or 85% of the cost of an individual plan. Moreover, the insurance must meet the federal government's requirements in terms of what benefits are included, meaning that many businesses that offer insurance to their workers today will have to change to new, more expensive plans.

ObamaCare's rules make expansion expensive, particularly for the 500,000 US businesses that have fewer than 100 employees.

Suppose that a firm with 49 employees does not provide health benefits. Hiring one more worker will trigger the mandate. The company would now have to provide insurance coverage to all 50 workers or pay a tax penalty.

...Under the circumstances, how likely is the company to hire that 50th worker? Or, if a company already has 50 workers, isn't the company likely to lay off one employee? Or cut hours and make some employees part time, thus getting under the 50 employee cap? Indeed, a study by Mercer found that 18% of companies were likely to do exactly that. It's worth noting that in France, another country where numerous government regulations kick in at 50 workers, there are 1,500 companies with 48 employees and 1,600 with 49 employees, but just 660 with 50 and only 500 with 51.

If service industries cut the staff any deeper, it's going to start looking like the sets of The Walking Dead in this country.

And Now, an Extended Look at the Comedic Horror That Is Dudes

A couple Jolts ago, I mentioned Dudes, a spectacularly bad idea that Cam Edwards and I came up with one late Thursday night. The show was our sitcom answer to HBO's Girls, -- inspired by his Twitter chats with Kurt Schlichter. We admit, we don't know what it's like to be a hapless young woman stumbling her way into delayed adulthood in the era of the Obama economy. We know what it's like to be a thirty or forty-something guy, still trying to play by the Reagan-era rules and values, in an Obama economy and Kardashian culture.

Cam and I envisioned a very Kurt-like protagonist, a successful lawyer, red state in his values in a blue-state city, a bubbling teapot of incredulity at the standards, expectations, and mentality of the modern world around him.

We would meet Not-Kurt dealing with a client who wanted to sue someone for writing nasty things about him on the Internet.

NOT-KURT

What you're talking about is a troll. I don't sue trolls. Do you know why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO MONEY. When you get libeled by a millionaire with a mansion and a yacht, then call me.

He would later lament our litigious society . . . while admitting it's a good way to make a living.

People are willing to sue each other over the most inane and inconsequential things! It is ridiculous, it is destructive to our society, and it is going to make me an embarrassingly rich man.

Not-Kurt would have a hapless legal assistant, who falls in with every what-are-they-thinking fad and trend that comes down the pike - " meggings," "guy-liner" and "man-scara," perhaps even being a Brony. Separate from the inanity of the trends, Not-Kurt would regularly chew his assistant out for his willingness to follow every silly idea proclaimed as stylish, concluding every grow-up-think-for-yourself-and-be-a-man lecture with, "Go fetch me a latte."

Not-Kurt would have some regular friends/partners-in-crime. One would be the Mike Greenberg to his Mike Golic, a guy who's slightly less at war with the spun-off-its-axis world around him, but befuddled nonetheless. He's the one who would offer the rant:

I'm a married middle-aged guy with a house in the suburbs who goes to work, pays his taxes and takes care of his kids. When the hell did I turn into the villain in society? Chris Brown still walks the streets! In the time it's taken me to finish this sentence, "Shawty Lo" has impregnated three more women and Kim Kardashian's been on four more magazine covers! I think one of 'em's a fishing magazine!

Yet somehow Madison Avenue considers me to be their go-to stereotype as a doofus, I'm the butt of every joke, sneered at for unsophisticated tastes, dismissed as a relic of a fading past, accused of not paying my fair share in taxes and insufficiently globally conscious because I'm only taking care of what's directly in front of me instead of glaciers or the Gaza Strip. How am I the problem in the world today? What the hell did I ever do?

We wanted Nick Searcy, star of FX's Justified, conservative Twitter star, and host of "Acting School" videos, to guest star as a professional "manscaper."

We envisioned a show that was not quite explicitly political, but certainly would echo some of the cries of disbelief we've heard among the conservative grassroots about the state of the world today.  At some point they would encounter some Occupy type, and Not-Kurt would dismiss the Occupier's complaint that "corporatist attitudes about what constitutes value" were at the heart of what ails the society:

You're never going to get my respect. You would loudly proclaim that you don't care about that, and perhaps you shouldn't. Hey, maybe what I think of you doesn't really matter. But what the economy as a whole is willing to pay you to do does matter, a lot. And absolutely no amount of protesting or chanting or giant puppets can make you more useful to someone else who has the money to pay you to do something.

And of course, every odd phrase would coincidentally be the name of an obscure band from the early 90s that Kurt saw open up for Right Said Fred in 1992.

Obama Poised To Carry Out Hostile Military Takeover Of US

Christians' Homes Burned In Pakistan

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 02:43 PM PST

(John Hinderaker)

In Lahore, a frenzied mob of Muslims went on a rampage in a Christian neighborhood, burning 150 homes. It was the usual story: someone started a rumor that a Christian had "blasphemed the Prophet," and members of the Religion of Peace® swung into action:

Hundreds of people in eastern Pakistan rampaged through a Christian neighborhood Saturday, torching dozens of homes after hearing reports that a Christian man had committed blasphemy against Islam's prophet. ...

A large crowd from a nearby mosque went to the Christian man's home on Friday night, said Khan. Police registered a blasphemy case against the man after the crowd gathered and demanded action, the officer said.

Fearing for their safety, hundreds of Christian families fled the area overnight. Khan said the mob returned on Saturday and began ransacking Christian homes and setting them ablaze.

No doubt they looted them of any valuables first.

He said the Christian community handed over to police the accused man, identified...as Sawan Masih, when police came to the neighborhood to investigate. Then the Christians all locked up their houses and went to relatives in other areas. He said the mob was armed with hammers and steel rods and broke into houses, ransacked two churches and burned Bibles and crosses. ...

The scene was chaotic. An Associated Press reporter said roughly 150 homes were torched. One man was seen carrying a dog and some puppies from a burning house. Refrigerators, washing and sewing machines, cooking pots, beds and other household goods were ripped from homes, smashed and burned in the streets.

One of the Christian homes that were attacked:

Few things in life are as much fun as burning down your neighbors' houses, apparently:

As is so often the case, the mob was incited to violence at a Friday evening service at a local mosque.

Obama Is AWOL on the Budget, Again

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 11:20 AM PST

(John Hinderaker)

Civil War officers used to say that you can't lead from the rear. Thousands of them gave their lives, leading their men the only way they knew how. No one asks Barack Obama to give up more than an occasional game of golf, but he still can't bring himself to lead. In one of his administration's many low moments, a White House aide explained Obama's style as "leading from behind," as though he were proud of it.

Sheridan at Winchester

Patty Murray

The budget is a typical case in point. After four long years, Senate Democrats have finally been shamed into obeying the law and producing a budget. Patty Murray, the new chairman of the Budget Committee, says it will be unveiled on Wednesday, and there will be one day-Thursday-to "mark up" the budget, proposing and voting on amendments. The Republican House, meanwhile, will produce a budget as it does every year. We will be watching with great interest to see what Patty Murray's proposal includes by way of taxes, spending and debt. If the "regular order" is followed, it is possible-unlikely, but possible-that the House and Senate budgets can be reconciled through compromise in a conference committee, and the federal government might actually have a budget for the first time in years.

So where is Barack Obama in this process? Nowhere, apparently. By law, he was required to produce his budget in February. He missed that deadline; no surprise there, as Obama's regard for laws of all kinds is slight. The White House said Obama's budget would be produced in March, but now the date has been pushed back to April. One might think that, with Congressional Democrats finally getting into the budget game after four years, Obama would want to play a role. You might even think he would want to lead. But no: it appears that he has not coordinated even with the members of his own party on the Hill, and his budget, when it finally sees the light of day, will be an irrelevant afterthought.

I once knew a judge who was pathologically incapable of making a decision. I felt sorry for him, but I always wondered: why on Earth would a man who would rather do almost anything than make a decision want to be a judge? Obama is a similar case. Why would someone who has no idea how to lead, who evidently has no desire to lead, want to be President of the United States?

Kelly Ayotte - stranded

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 09:09 AM PST

(Paul Mirengoff)

Heading into this session of Congress, any list of young, rising Republican Senators would have included not just Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul, but also Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire. However, that was before she joined the McCain-Graham-Ayotte trio.

The formation of that trio seemed like a good idea at the time. It offered McCain and Graham a fresh, diverse face. And since Susan Rice and Hillary Clinton were slated to be targets, Ayotte's presence would help rebut the inevitable (and absurd) charge of sexism.

From Ayotte's point of view, the alliance would elevate her profile, while providing her with national security/foreign policy credentials and the appearance of gravitas. Moreover, McCain has long been popular in New Hampshire.

But now McCain and Graham have made themselves the symbol of all that's objectionable about the "past its sell-by date" Republican establishment. They did so primarily through their attacks on Rand Paul - fair in principle, I believe, but over-the-top in execution.

Even before the filibuster, though, McCain and Graham were suffering from over-exposure and from their convoluted approach to the Hagel nomination. For example, McCain's vote to end the filibuster of a nominee for Secretary of Defense he deemed unqualified was cutting it too fine for many conservatives.

Where does this leave Ayotte? Light years behind Cruz, Rubio, and Paul in the estimation of many conservatives.

Is the damage irreparable? Probably not. We should remember that Ayotte has stood with McCain and Graham on issues where they had the right line - most notably in trying to find out what happened in Benghazi. She did not denounce Rand Paul's filibuster.

It will be interesting to see whether the McCain-Graham-Ayotte trio appears again in public. My advice to the Senator from New Hampshire would be to go solo from now on. Or, if there's to be a reunion, confine the performance to Benghazi-related issues.

The Power Line 100: Diana Schaub

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 08:12 AM PST

(Steven Hayward)

This weekend's installment in the Power Line 100 Best Professors in America series is Diana Schaub, who teaches in the political science department at Loyola College in Maryland. She was appointed by President Bush in 2006 to the President's Council on Bioethics, and serves also on the Hoover Institution's Task Force on the Virtues of a Free Society. I should also mention that she teaches in the Ashbrook Center's summer master's degree program in history and government for high school teachers. No rest for the best!

Diana studied for her Ph.D at the University of Chicago, which means she Blooms with provocative insights on everything from . . . well, heck, let's just let the title of one of her books speak for itself: Erotic Liberalism: Women and Revolution in Montesquieu's Persian Letters. See, here's the point: conservatives do "gender" too; we just don't use that term. We prefer "eros" instead, and start at the beginning with the classics. (Some other time maybe we'll spend a few minutes pondering Socrates' argument about the natural equality of women in Book V of The Republic, which most postmodern gender feminists have probably never read, since all those ancient Greeks are the deadest of dead white males. Jean Yarbrough, who will be coming to this space soon, teaches a course at Boudoin entitled "Eros and Politics," and let's just say for now that Germaine Greer and Betty Friedan don't make the reading list.) Other essays and book chapters of Schaub worth reading include "The Pillars of the Temple of Liberty," in The Survival of Culture: Permanent Values in a Virtual Age, edited by Hilton Kramer and Roger Kimball, and "The Liberation of Women: Old and New," in The Liberal Tradition in Focus: Problems and New Perspectives, edited by Joao Carlos Espada, Marc F. Plattner, and Adam Wolfson. But my favorite has to be "Captain Kirk and the Art of Rule," which appears in Faith, Reason, and Political Life Today, edited by Peter Lawler and Dale McConkey.

There are few better than Schaub on issues of race in America, especially the important legacy of Frederick Douglass. The very first episode of The American Mind video series with Charles Kesler features a conversation with Prof. Schaub about some of these matters which you can see here if you're signed up with Claremont to view this series, and if you aren't, why not?-it's free. (The clip linked here is just one minute long, and offers Kesler's introduction of Schaub.) Or, here's a nice short bit (about one minute) of Schaub talking about the most salient aspects of the Lincoln and Washington monuments:

Why is Obama visiting Israel before he's sure it has a government?

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 03:18 PM PST

(Paul Mirengoff)

The White House insists that President Obama will go ahead and visit Israel later this month even if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not put together a governing coalition before the president arrives.

Obama is scheduled to arrive March 20. Netanyahu's deadline for forming a governing coalition is March 16. However, it's not clear that Netanyahu will meet that deadline. And even if he does, the views of the new ruling coalition on key issues may not have taken shape.

So why isn't Obama willing to postpone his visit? After all, there must be limits to the kind of understandings he can reach with a leader whose government hasn't yet been formed. Israel, a parliamentary democracy, doesn't operate like the U.S. Netanyahu can't be counted on to proceed with a policy unless the members of his coalition support that policy. Until we know who will be in that coalition, at least some of his important policies remain up for grabs.

Obama's unwillingness to reschedule may have something to do with the lavishly imperial way in which he travels. The nightmarish logistics of such travel are not conducive to rescheduling.

But the more fundamental explanation may lie in the objectives of Obama's visit. Thankfully, it appears unlikely that his objective is to make substantive progess on "peace talks" with the Palestinians - an issue as to which Netanyahu might be constrained by a coalition. Obama seems temporarily to have gotten out of the "peace" brokering business. For example, his mention of Israel during the State of the Union speech conspicuously avoided the issue.

More likely, Obama wants to persuade Netanyahu not to attack Iran. This is an issue over which Netanyahu would likely exercise decisve influence, regardless of who is in his coalition.

Moreover, as Jonathan Tobin points out, Obama cannot hope for Israeli restraint unless he convinces Israelis that the U.S. remains "committed to Israel's security and can be trusted to do the right thing on any security-related issue."

For this purpose, just showing up in Israel may be 90 percent of the battle - provided that Obama manages to conceal his disdain for the Jewish state.

Samira Ibrahim speaks

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 01:03 PM PST

(Scott Johnson)

This afternoon Michelle Obama and John Kerry were scheduled to present the International Women of Courage Award to Samira Ibrahim and nine other women who have shown leadership in advocating for women's rights around the world. Ibrahim was included in recognition of her battle against the Egyptian army's infamous "virginity tests." Ibrahim was in Washington for the award ceremony today.

Writing at the Weekly Standard on Wednesday, Samuel Tadros performed the due diligence that should have been performed by the State Department. Tadros demonstrated through a review of her statements on Twitter that Ibrahim is a rather vile anti-Semite and 9/11 fan. Among her Twitter droppings, Ibrahim had left a record of statements quoting Hitler with approval, celebrating the murder of Israelis in Bulgaria last summer, and the September 11, 2012 siege of the U.S. embassy in Cairo.

Ibrahim alleged the Weiner defense. She claimed that her Twitter page had been "stolen" and that she was not responsible for the comments. Jeffrey Goldberg wrote about the case yesterday while the outcome was perhaps subject to reasonable doubt. Today the State Department announced it was deferring her award pending further review, like NFL officials going to the tape to make a touchdown call.

Now comes Lee Smith to report:

Ibrahim herself has spoken, writing in Arabic on her Twitter page. Egyptian democracy activist Mina Rezkalla provides the translation: "I refuse to apologize to the Zionist lobby in America regarding my previous anti-Zionist statements under pressure from American government therefore they withdrew the award."

This would seem to settle the question as to whether or not her page had been "stolen." Now all that's left is for the State Department to demand that Ibrahim reimburse American taxpayers for her trip to the United States.

One door closes and another opens. Given that bit about "the Zionist lobby in America," Ibrahim may be in line for a plum position working for Chuck Hagel over at the Department of Defense.

Remember when we were told that the Republican Party, cowed by the Tea Party and other "extremists," was marching in lockstep towards its doom to the tune of a single drummer? If that seems to you like only yesterday, you aren't far off.

But check out the Senate. The Democrats are in lockstep on virtually every vote. Even in response to President Obama's controversial, seemingly illiberal drone policy, the only strong Democratic dissenter is Ron Wyden.

Meanwhile, the Republicans are all over the map on a multitude of matters, putting on a virtual circus of dissent and division.

In this ring, see principled Young Turks like Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio raise hell. In this ring see the Old Bulls trying to beat some sense into their misguided young colleagues.

Unfortunately, Rand Paul seems more confused (or perhaps opportunistic) than principled. Recall his votes on Chuck Hagel. First, he voted to filibuster Hagel; then he voted to confirm him.

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio seems more like a cheap-shot artist than a principled advocate of conservative reform. Recall his sponsorship of the canard that key groups opposing amnesty for illegal aliens aren't really conservatives, but rather stalking horses for the pro-abortion movement.

Only Ted Cruz seems to fulfill the principled Young Turk role with a modicum of dignity and coherence. Ironically, but perhaps for that reason, he draws the most fire from the left.

As for the Old Bulls, their critique of the Young Turks contains more nonsense than sense. Think of Lindsey Graham's ill-informed and childish attack on Rand Paul's filibuster. And think about how miscast the intemperate John McCain is in the role of wise elder statesman.

We're a big tent with plenty of clowns.

Fortunately, the Party is blessed with a few Senate Republicans who fill simultaneously the roles for which Paul/Rubio and McCain/Graham are auditioning. For example, Jeff Sessions and Ron Johnson provide principled and powerful dissent against Obama's left-liberalism. And they manage do so with dignity and maturity.

Ain't nothing like the real thing.

It's too bad we can't impeach Bill Clinton again

Posted: 07 Mar 2013 10:03 PM PST

(Paul Mirengoff)

In a Washington Post op-ed, Bill Clinton argues that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which he signed into law, is unconstitutional. This raises an obvious question: Why did Clinton sign an unconstitutional piece of legislation into law?

As slick as he is, Clinton can't provide an answer. He does explain why he signed DOMA in 1996:

[At that time] in no state in the union was same-sex marriage recognized, much less available as a legal right, but some were moving in that direction. Washington, as a result, was swirling with all manner of possible responses, some quite draconian. As a bipartisan group of former senators stated in their March 1 amicus brief to the Supreme Court, many supporters of the bill known as DOMA believed that its passage "would defuse a movement to enact a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, which would have ended the debate for a generation or more." It was under these circumstances that DOMA came to my desk, opposed by only 81 of the 535 members of Congress.

Clinton appears to be saying that he signed DOMA to head-off a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. But that's no excuse for signing unconstitutional legislation. After all, Clinton took an oath to uphold the Constitution. Unfortunately, oaths have never had much meaning for Clinton.

Clinton also says "I know now that the law is discriminatory." But he also must know that not all "discriminatory" laws are unconstitutional.

Moreover, DOMA's potential for "discrimination" was apparent when Clinton signed it. At that time, as he acknowledges, some states were moving towards legalizing same-sex marriage. DOMA meant that same-sex couples who married in these states would not have certain federal benefits available to other married couples. Yet Clinton signed DOMA into law.

I wonder what Bill Clinton hoped to accomplish through an op-ed in which he admits to another act of cynicism and lawlessness. Does he think that one or more of the five Supreme Court Justices who may be inclined to uphold DOMA will be moved by this op-ed to switch on the issue?

I doubt it. More likely, the judge Clinton has in mind is History. That arbiter already has him pegged as lawless cynic anyway. So why not try to explain away his endorsement of DOMA, and get on what he assumes eventually will be the prevailing side by hopping abroad the gay marriage express before it arrives at the station?

The Paul Principle

(Steven Hayward)

Looking back to the Republican rout of Bill Clinton and the Democrats in 1994, Clinton looked like he was a goner in 1996, plaintively remarking at a press conference in early 1995 that "I'm still relevant."  It is clear that Bill Clinton's comeback began with the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995, which enabled him to deploy his best "I feel your pain" schtick, and to demagogue conservative talk radio.  It was an amazingly opportunistic performance, but it worked to turn around his sagging fortunes.

Something of the same dynamic may have taken place yesterday for Republicans with Rand Paul's theatrical, old-school filibuster conducted in the age of new-school social media and a 24/7 news cycle.  Coming only a few days after Obama's inverse "relevant" flop ("I'm not a dictator"), Senator Paul pointed out how Obama (or a future president) might in fact wish to behave like a dictator, even if the claim was thin.  It "changed the narrative," as the postmodernists like to say.  It caught Democrats flat-footed, and the media by surprise.  Democrats were totally AWOL on the Senate floor, except for Sen. Ron Wyden, who sympathizes with Sen. Paul.  (Needless to say, if President Bush made as extensive use of drones as Obama is doing, the Left would be rending every garment and staging hunger strikes.)

Even better, as our Paul Mirengoff noted, it exposed the weary, used-up quality of the GOP old guard in the Senate.  This also reminds me of how the "young turks" in the House (especially Newt but also Jack Kemp) in the late 1970s and early 1980s began to turn out the old "go-along," Stockholm-syndrome Republicans of the time.  The dynamic yesterday and today between McCain and Graham, and Paul-Rubio-Cruz-Lee and Toomey shows whose time is up, and whose time is coming.

I'm not sold on Rand Paul, but mark your calendar: yesterday was a turning point.  And it may have just elevated Rand Paul to the top tier of GOP candidates for 2016.

Obama Adulterates Marriage and Federalism

This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Jan LaRue waspublished March 7, 2013 on the American Thinker website.

"Marriage, it doesn't mean anything." That's what Barack Obama told wife Michelle while they were dating, according to her 2008 interview in The New Yorker. Marriage won't mean anything if Obama has his way with the Supreme Court.

As a suitor of voters, Obama expressed his "sacred" version in response to a question from Pastor Rick Warren just before the 2008 election:

"I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian -- for me -- for me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God's in the mix."

ACRU's Liberty U. Brief: ObamaCare Violates Religious Freedom

WASHINGTON (March 6) - In an amicus brief filed at the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the American Civil Rights Union (ACRU) argues that the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act's (PPACA) employer and individual mandates are unconstitutional burdens on religious freedom. It is the ACRU's ninth federal court brief challenging ObamaCare.

Authored by ACRU General Counsel Peter Ferrara in Liberty University v Timothy Geithner, the brief's key arguments are:

  • "The Supreme Court ... found the PPACA's individual mandate to be without authorization under the Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause. This Court should find the same for the employer mandate."
  • "The employer mandate is also not justifiable under the Taxing and Spending Clause. .... The Court upheld the individual mandate only because the assessment imposed on individuals ... did not cross the line between a permissible tax and an impermissible punitive penalty under Bailey v. Drexel Furniture (1922). ...the employer mandate involves a prohibitive penalty similar to the one struck down in Drexel.

Mandated Wages and Discrimination

This column by ACRU Policy Board Member and Professor of Economics Dr. Walter E. Williams was published March 6, 2013 on Townhall.com.

Let's work through an example. Suppose 100 yards of fence could be built using one of two techniques. You could hire three low-skilled workers for $15 each, or you could hire one high-skilled worker for $40. Either way, you get the same 100 yards of fence built. If you sought maximum profits, which production technique would you employ? I'm guessing that you'd hire one high-skilled worker and pay him $40 rather than hire three low-skilled workers for $15 each. Your labor costs would be $40 rather than $45.

Suppose the high-skilled worker came into your office and demanded $55 a day. What would be your response? You'd probably tell him to go play in the traffic and hire the three low-skilled workers. After all, hiring the three low-skilled workers for $45, to get the same 100 yards of fence, would be cheaper than the $55 a day now demanded by the high-skilled worker.

Ask Georgia State Senators to Support Corrections Bill for Immigration Enforcement Law

HB 125, which would fix some unintended consequences of Georgia's 2011 immigration-enforcement law, passed the House and will soon be heard in the Senate Judiciary Non-Civil Committee. The ACLU and other pro-illegal alien groups are protesting the bill and plan a lobbying day on Tuesday, March 12th.

HB 125 closes a loophole that allows illegal aliens to use passports they acquired after illegal entry for "secure and verifiable" ID purposes under the law. This loophole could allow illegal aliens to access benefits the law denies and makes them appear to be "documented." The bill also adds driver's licenses to the list of "public benefits," which restr icts the types of documents that can be used when applying, and clarifies that applicants for professional licenses and other public benefits are only required to document U.S. citizenship once in the same issuing agency.

Please help pass HB 125 by contacting Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, President Pro Tempore David Shafer, Majority Leader Ronnie Chance, the Judiciary Non-Civil Committee and your State Senator. Also, if you live in the Atlanta area, consider visiting Senators on March 12th. Instructions are included below.

Contacting Lt. Gov. Cagle

Please call and email Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle (404-656-5030; email form) with the message:

"All of Georgia is watching. Voters like me expect you to stand up to the ACLU and pro-illegal alien groups by passing HB125 intact. Georgia has more illegal aliens than Arizona. YES on HB 125 and yes to a secure and lawful Georgia."

Additional Talking Points

Current law unintentionally requires Georgia officials, including police, to accept an illegal alien's "undocumented passport" as proof of legal presence in the U.S. This allows illegal aliens to seem "legal" even though their passport has no valid stamp documenting legal entry. This loophole must be removed because it completely nullifies the intent of our law.

The undocumented passport problem and other issues addressed under HB 125 must be fixed. Please use the power of your office to pass the bill intact.

Contacting Senate President Pro Tempore Shafer

The Real Reasons Bill Clinton Now Supports 'Gay' Marriage

Down arrow_02In an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal

former president Bill Clinton has come out of the closet in support of homosexual marriage. In 1996, he signed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Why the change? He says that 1996 "was a very different time."

This tells me that Clinton governed in terms of opinion polls. In 1996, opinion was against homosexual marriage, therefore, he was against it. In 2013, opinion polls show a different view. There's nothing startling in this type of moral shift. Politicians do it all the time.

With 17 years of pro-homosexual propaganda hitting us every day, I'm not surprised that opinions have shifted. Let me ask the poll question, and I bet opinion would shift back hard the other way. Remember, low-information and no-information voters are now in the majority.

But let's get back to Clinton and the real reason for his shift.

COMMENTARY:

ABC's Porn Pinup for Teenage Girls
By L. Brent Bozell III
Sometimes it's hard to measure the distance between the supposedly established, respectable press and the seediest corners of hardcore pornography. On March 1, ABC's "Nightline" celebrated a porn star named "James Deen" (real name: Bryan Sevilla). The apparent "news" hook is his role in a forthcoming movie with the ever-more pathetic Lindsay Lohan. Nothing sells like sensationalistic sex. Just call it "news" - and hide the smirk.

By Michelle Malkin
While many Americans worry about government drones in the sky spying on our private lives, Washington meddlers are already on the ground and in our schools gathering intimate data on children and families.

If We've Lost Walter ...
By Rich Galen
Not only is Obama losing the undying adoration of the American people, he is also in trouble with the normally Liberal chattering class here in Our Nation's Capital.
