Quote:
"But while property is considered as the basis of the freedom of the American yeomanry, there are other auxiliary supports; among which is the information of the people. In no country, is education so general -- in no country, have the body of the people such a knowledge of the rights of men and the principles of government. This knowledge, joined with a keen sense of liberty and a watchful jealousy, will guard our constitutions and awaken the people to an instantaneous resistance of encroachments."

New threats suggest North Korea's nukes work
Rogue nation had been trying to mount bomb aboard long-range missile
by F. Michael Maloof
WASHINGTON - The new direct threat from North Korea of a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the United States - while not surprising - suggests, experts say, the rogue nation actually now is close to placing a bomb aboard a three-stage missile, which is capable of reaching the western United States.
The threat followed the nation's Feb. 12 test of a miniaturized nuclear weapon that may fit on a long-range missile, and prompted an immediate condemnation from the United Nations Security Council and North Korea's closest friends, Russia and China, who agreed today to new sanctions.
But while Russia and China are the closest to the North Korean leadership, it is becoming increasingly apparent that they have limited influence over that leadership's actions.

Obama in Guns-to-Jihadists Cover-Up
Posted on March 5, 2013
In a radio interview, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky, questioned whether the Obama administration may be covering up the role played by the CIA annex in Benghazi in a possible scheme to run guns to rebels in the Middle East.
The annex was attacked Sept. 11 along with the special U.S. mission in Benghazi.
Charged Paul: "There has been a lot made of the political cover up of President Obama's administration saying this (Benghazi attack) had something to do with a homemade film from some guy in Los Angeles. But in reality the question is, or the secondary quotation is, why would they do a cover up? What are they covering up?"
Paul said he has "a feeling that it had something to do with the CIA annex."
"You know, a week before the ambassador was killed in Libya, a ship left Libya and docked in Turkey, and it actually interviewed the captain of that ship who said there were arms on board and that he actually witnessed the rebels taking the arms and disputing over who got what," he said. "That there were grenade launchers; that there were significant arms being transferred.

CSCOPE: Exposing the Nation's Most Controversial Public School Curriculum System
The Blaze | Tiffany Gabbay | Mar. 7, 2013 7:50pm
In February, Texas announced that the state, along with the Texas Education Service Center Curriculum (TESCCC,) would enact major changes to the controversial curriculum management system dubbed CSCOPE. The system received a litany of complaints from faculty members and parents alike concerning its lack of transparency (parents were allegedly not permitted to review lesson-plans), lack of oversight from the State Board of Education, and for allegedly imposing oppressive working conditions for faculty members.
CSCOPE was created so that teachers could frame their year around teaching points required by the state. Lessons, which are written by CSCOPE staff and current and former teachers, can be updated and delivered online, making it more cost-effective than standard textbooks.
To note just how off-color some of the CSCOPE curriculum is, consider that the Texas CSCOPE Review, an independent watchdog group, uncovered an out-of-date, optional CSCOPE lesson-plan on terrorism - "World History Unit 12 Lesson 07" - which allegedly likens the Boston Tea Party to "an act of terrorism."

Call To Action
Historic March for Marriage
On March 26th, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Perry case, which will determine if Proposition 8 - the citizens initiative approved by the people of California in 2008 to protect marriage - is constitutional or not. More importantly, the question of same-sex "marriage" and the right of Americans to protect marriage will be decided.
It is imperative that political leaders, the media, and the culture see that we care about protecting marriage enough to stand up and march for it.
The Pennsylvania Family Council is sponsoring a bus to travel from Lancaster the morning of the march. For more details and to sign up, click here.
The March is being organized by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) alongside a broad coalition of pro-family organization, state partners, African-American, Latino, Catholic and Protestant leaders. Speakers include Gary Bauer (American Values), Bishop Harry Jackson, Dr. Robert George (Manhattan Declaration), Penny Nance (Concerned Women for America) and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone.
Here's the schedule of events for the March on Tuesday, March 26th:
- 8:30am - Gather at the National Mall location between 10th Street and 12th Street NW & between Madison Drive NW and Jefferson Drive SW
- 9:30am - March to Supreme Court and then return to the National Mall location.
- 11:00am - 1:00pm - Rally begins at National Mall location.
Please consider the following:
- Attend the Marriage March on the 26th.
- To sign up for the Lancaster bus, click here. For details, contact us at 717-545-0600.
- If you're able to put together another group/bus to attend the march, let us know how we may be able to help in your effort.

Sheriffs from Bucks, Berks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh and Montgomery Counties have been invited to attend and share their perspective on their role as a County Sheriff. Any candidate for the office of County Sheriff is invited and will be given the opportunity to make a brief statement of his platform. The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information on CCG, see www.CCG-PA.org or on the constitutional role of the sheriff, see http://www.sheriffbrigadesofpenn.com/.

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
|
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
- Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
- Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

Important Dates:
- February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
- February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
- March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
- April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.
Any questions, holler.

We would like to clarifiy the Prothonotary candidates for the upcoming Republican Primary are Michelle Christian (not Diane) and Pat Bachtle. It does not change a call for an open primary in this race.
Why all the fuss about a Prothonotary race?
If you have wondered what a Prothonotary is, you are not alone. In addition, whoever thought that it would be the focus of a power struggle within the Bucks County GOP for the 2013 elections?
There are two people running for Prothonotary this May. Pat Bachtle a long time incumbent and a newcomer Diane Christian. On paper this looks ok, but when you take a closer look, more questions than answers arise.
The Tea Party should be happy to see a newcomer on the ticket. Right?
We should be happy to see the incumbent challenged by a newcomer. Right? Except this newcomer was hand selected by Bucks County GOP Chairwoman Pat Poprik.
Do you remember the countless "newcomers" who have tried to run for office in the past few years? They were handily dismissed by the party leadership and told that positions only go to those who have worked hard for the party over several years. Pat Bachtle is the incumbent Prothonotary and has worked for the party for many years. Now Pat Poprik is embracing a newcomer that she has hand selected with no prior experience or record. There is clearly a double standard.
One does not have to think too hard to figure out what the reaction would be to an unknown Tea Party candidate running against an established incumbent. Remember when the GOP called the Constables to intervene against non-endorsed GOP candidates in 2010?
Why is the party chair deciding to pick this fight when Bucks County is becoming more liberal? This has the potential to leave the seat wide open for a Democrat grab. Bucks County GOP money should not be spent in a primary for a Prothonotary seat. This is foolish and wasteful use of resources.
We at The Kitchen Table Patriots
are calling for an Unendorsed Primary. Let the best candidate win. The registered Republicans of Bucks County should decide on primary election day who should be the next Prothonotary on the Republican ticket. Not a small group of GOP County Executives, half of which were appointed by the Chair of the Party. It doesn't seem like a fair process does it.
If you are a registered Republican and live in Bucks County Pennsylvania we are urging you to contact your local committee person and ask them to vote for no endorsement. If you do not know who you committee person is than call the Bucks County Republican Headquarters at 215-345-8811
Also We urge you to clear your calendar and attend the Bucks County GOP executive committee meeting on Thursday March 7 at PM. at the Republican Headquarters in Doylestown. The is the night that the executive committee, half of which were hand picked by the county chair will endorse. Come and speak your mind to your elected Executive. Let the Republican party know you are watching and paying attention.

Important Announcement from SFL
|
You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.
Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.
I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.
Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".
Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.
Click here to read my blog post on the SFL website about our first DVD.

If you've been wanting an interesting, clearly written, how-to-manual for identifying and fighting UN Agenda 21, here it is. Agenda 21--All the information you need to understand what is happening in your town, why it's happening, who is behind it, and what you can do to stop it. BEHIND THE GREEN MASK: U.N. Agenda 21 is 172 pages of truth. Part history, part current events, part hand-to-hand combat, and part blueprint for keeping your freedom, this is one book that you'll put to work immediately. Boots on the ground and all hands on deck is the order of the day. Awareness is the first step in the Resistance.
|
Awareness about Agenda 21 is finally spreading throughout the country, due in no small part to your efforts. But knowing it is there isn't enough. Now we need to educate ourselves on how to combat it. That's where you come in.
American Policy Center has recently released a booklet that explains everything you need to know to start fighting back against sustainable programs both locally and nationally. The booklet is called Special Report: Agenda 21 and How to Stop It and is available in the APC store for only $5.95.
I wrote this 35 page booklet in order to give activists a succinct resource they can refer to if they suspect Agenda 21 or Sustainable Development is being implemented in their area. It includes my own research coupled with incredibly helpful graphics created by Carroll County, Maryland Commissioner Richard Rothschild.
In the booklet you will find answers to several roadblocks that grassroots anti-Agenda 21 activists often face, including a definition of property rights and "Resolution to Protect Citizens' Property Rights," which many concerned citizens are already using to tie the hands of power hungry politicians.
This booklet is a great resource for anyone interested in preserving their property rights. It includes all the information to put up a first line of defense and step by step instructions for how to proceed from there. If you face Agenda 21 or Sustainable development in your area or are simply concerned with the national fight this booklet is a must read.

How to Raise an American Patriot: Making it Okay for Our Kids to Be Proud to Be American
|
Parents are the number one people to teach this to their kids.
This historic book will give parents the talking points they need to teach their kids why it's good to love our country and understand why it's so important to fight for our freedom and their rights.
We will lay the foundation for our next "greatest" generation. I interviewed 13 American patriots, all with different backgrounds and upbringings - several you have heard of and several you haven't heard of but you should.

Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
- You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
- I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.

Calvin Coolidge and the Moral Case for Economy
Amity Shlaes Author, Coolidge
|
 |
AMITY SHLAES is a syndicated columnist for Bloomberg, a director of the Four Percent Growth Project at the George W. Bush Presidential Center, and a member of the board of the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation. She has served as a member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal and as a columnist for the Financial Times, and is a recipient of the Hayek Prize and the Frederic Bastiat Prize for free-market journalism. She is the author of four books, Germany: The Empire Within, The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression, The Greedy Hand: How Taxes Drive Americans Crazy and What to Do About It, and Coolidge.
|
The following is adapted from a talk given at Hillsdale College on January 27, 2013, during a conference on "The Federal Income Tax: A Centenary Consideration," co-sponsored by the Center for Constructive Alternatives and the Ludwig von Mises Lecture Series.

With the Federal Debt spiraling out of control, many Americans sense an urgent need to find a political leader who is able to say "no" to spending. Yet they fear that finding such a leader is impossible. Conservatives long for another Ronald Reagan. But is Reagan the right model? He was of course a tax cutter, reducing the top marginal rate from 70 to 28 percent. But his tax cuts-which vindicated supply-side economics by vastly increasing federal revenue-were bought partly through a bargain with Democrats who were eager to spend that revenue. Reagan was no budget cutter-indeed, the federal budget rose by over a third during his administration.
An alternative model for conservatives is Calvin Coolidge. President from 1923 to 1929, Coolidge sustained a budget surplus and left office with a smaller budget than the one he inherited. Over the same period, America experienced a proliferation of jobs, a dramatic increase in the standard of living, higher wages, and three to four percent annual economic growth. And the key to this was Coolidge's penchant for saying "no." If Reagan was the Great Communicator, Coolidge was the Great Refrainer.

Covering the Conclave
|
By: Hugh Hewitt
|
How are American newspapers and networks covering the Conclave? Poorly, if at all. Most of the stories are breathless horserace-style speculations about men they don't know. When American journalists venture into the issues facing the Roman Catholic Church they rightly mention the abuse scandals and then most stop, except for a few who go on about celibacy --which is not going to change no matter who emerges as the new pope. When you next spot an article talking about the slaughter of Christians in the world or the suppression of the Church in China, send me a link. The next pope has enormous issues to confront that most American journalists can't even begin to conceive of much less cover in depth.

Congratulations, You Stopped Halligan!

Take Action!

March 7, 2013
Because of grassroots activists like you, a cloture motion to stop debate on the nomination of Caitlin Halligan to the D.C. Court of Appeals failed by a vote of 51-41 with 8 Senators not voting. 60 votes were needed to move to final confirmation.
Throughout this week we were hearing reports that some of the Senators listed below might cave to liberal pressure and vote to confirm Halligan. It was phone calls and emails from their constituents that kept these Senators strong. This is a terribly important victory, because as we described in earlier alerts, Caitlin Halligan is so radical that if she had been confirmed, it would send a message to President Obama that conservatives will rubber stamp just about any nominee he wants to impose on the American people.
As one of our conservative heroes, Texas Senator Ted Cruz declared in his statement about the vote:
"Ms. Halligan's record justifies the unusual step of denying cloture to a judicial nominee. She is a skilled litigator with a distinguished career, but she has repeatedly advanced extreme legal theories inconsistent with judicial restraint. A federal judge, especially on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, must be willing to follow the law and not impose his or her personal policy positions."
Take Action!
Senators are our last line of defense against supremacist judges who will continue to implement President Obama's radical policies from the bench long after he leaves office. Below is a list of Senators who voted NO on Halligan. If your Senator(s) is/are on this list, please take a moment to thank them.

RedState Morning Briefing
For March 8, 2013
1. The Power of One Man's Conviction
What was it about Rand Paul's filibuster that has captivated conservatives all over the country and reinvigorated their desire to fight for our Constitutional Republic? The irony is that the drone issue was not even one of the most popular issues among many conservatives until last night. I suspect that many conservatives don't necessarily agree with some of Paul's assertions about targeting terrorists like Al-Awlaki overseas, although we are all (everyone except for McCain and Graham) concerned about targeting Americans on American soil. Yet he has become an overnight sensation, not just among his core libertarian base, but among the broad conservative movement.
Conservatives have been starving for a fighter; longing for someone who will do something drastic, engage in a media savvy fight against an imperialistic president who has no respect for checks and balances and an invidious disregard for the separation of powers. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2. Reflections of a potential drone strike target I don't want to sound alarmist, but at the moment I'm a potential target for drone strikes, and so are you. I'd really like to be formally and unambiguously taken off the list, unless due process is conducted following the discovery of evidence that I belong there. A simple "No, the President will not send robots to kill you" would suffice, but the current "we probably wouldn't do that" assurances aren't cutting it. Specifically, Attorney General Eric Holder's written response to Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) said, "As members of this administration have previously indicated, the US government has not carried out drone strikes in the United States and has no intention of doing so. As a policy matter moreover, we reject the use of military force where well-established law enforcement authorities in this country provide the best means for incapacitating a terrorist threat." . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 3. Barack Obama's basic filibuster mistake. And it's a mistake that has little if anything to do with the nomination of John Brennan as CIA Director (although having House Minority Leader Mitch McConnell somewhat surprisingly announce that he was opposing cloture on the eventual vote is not going to help Barack Obama any). It's also a mistake that has less than you think to do with the question of drone strikes on American citizens themselves, although the administration's inexplicable unwillingness to simply lie if that's what it would have taken to shut Senator Rand Paul up is almost... startling. I know that this sounds cynical - but then, I suspect that the real reason that Barack Obama didn't concede the point is that he was and is fundamentally unwilling to give any Republican a non-reciprocated win at this point. Paul wanted the point conceded that badly? - Then NO! Rand Paul doesn't get it conceded. So there. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 4. Colorado Rep. Rhonda Fields' Rap Sheet Longer Than Previously Reported A key Colorado lawmaker behind Democratic efforts to increase gun restrictions in the state has a more extensive criminal record than was previously reported according to court records. Although Rep. Rhonda Fields (D-Aurora) has previously claimed that her criminal record of larceny and shoplifting was due to a "dark" and "desperate" time in her life, public records show that her disregard for the state's laws continued well into her tenure as an elected lawmaker. State court records reveal multiple offenses committed by Fields that were not previously reported, including at least one while holding public office at the state level. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Welfare Reform Is Back
Rachel Sheffield | March 8, 2013 at 6:15 am
Last summer, the Obama Administration gutted the successful 1996 welfare reform law by offering to waive its work requirements. Now the debate is back, as several Members of Congress are trying to restore the reforms that helped so many out of poverty.
The work requirements were the heart and soul of the historic welfare reform signed by President Bill Clinton. As a result of "workfare," welfare rolls declined by half within five years, and employment rates among low-income individuals increased.
Some of the biggest winners from workfare were children. Millions of children were lifted out of poverty. In 2003, the nation had the lowest level of poverty among black children in its history.
The Obama Administration's undoing of this program threatens to set back America's children and families. Conservative Members of Congress introduced legislation last week that would overturn the Administration's plans to allow states to waive work requirements from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

Threat and Response-Part One
URGENT-They want to criminalize free speech!
We're fighting to protect your rights!
On February 19th, the Saudi Gazette ran a story with the headline "OIC gears up to get denigration of religions criminalized." Here are the first two paragraphs from that story:
| |
|
Getting the go-ahead from the Cairo Islamic Summit, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has been actively trying to get the denigration of religions recognized as a criminal offense, according to a top official. "Next session of the Istanbul Process on Islamophobia will be held in the first half of this year, and the session will squarely focus on the issue of criminalizing denigration of religions," said Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, director of cultural affairs at the OIC general secretariat and spokesman for the OIC secretary general.
|
Using the fig leaf of "denigration of religions," it's clear the OIC is absolutely committed to imposing a key provision of sharia law on America and the West.
Sharia law prohibits speech that insults, defames or offends Islam and Muhammad. This is what the OIC is after-a worldwide prohibition on any speech that dares critique or even question Islam.
|
The OIC's current mechanism to accomplish this is the Istanbul Process and UN Resolution 16/18. And here's the really bad news-our State Department is promoting this effort.
This Monday, March 11th, ACT! for America will be airing a national webcast where we will launch our campaign to stop this effort, "Americans United to Defend Free Speech." The webcast will air from 7:30 PM EST to 9:30 PM EST. You can use this link to tune in:

Many European countries already have so-called "hate speech" laws. ACT! for America's chapter leader in Austria, Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolf, was convicted for violating one of those laws. There have been speech codes restricting so-called "hate speech" on many American college campuses for years. Canada's Supreme Court recently issued a ruling that will almost certainly be used to restrict free speech. Groups like CAIR, ISNA and many other Muslim Brotherhood connected organizations repeatedly try to silence any criticism of radical Islam with shouts of "Islamophobia" and "racism." If we win the war on Islamic terrorism but lose our right of free speech, we still lose. Please help us fight back against this growing, insidious threat. Obama's 'Republican Sequester' 2014 Endgame
Republicans Are Throwing the Game!
By Mark Alexander · March 7, 2013
"Necessity, especially in politics, often occasions false hopes, false reasonings and a system of measures, correspondently erroneous." --Alexander Hamilton (Federalist No. 35)
Shhhh! They are asleep!
Ahead of the implementation of sequestration on March 1st, I provided Beltway Republicans and pundits with a comprehensive analysis of Obama's sequestration strategy and objective under the title, "Obama's 'Republican Sequester' Setup." Unfortunately, Republican "leaders" have yet to comprehend how they have been set up to fall.
Yes, most Republicans and conservative analysts recognize that for Obama, politics always trumps people, so the focus of his never-ending campaign is now the 2014 midterm election, which will determine, in large measure, his second-term legacy. But they're still unwitting pawns in Obama's sequestration game.
Republican and columnists have devoted endless airtime and print to how sequestration was Obama's idea, how small the sequester cuts are compared to the budget and deficits, how overstated Obama's dire economic warnings have been, and how Obama's sequestration cuts in defense are grossly disproportionate.
These politicos and pundits are right on all counts, but they're so focused on tactics that they've completely missed Obama's macro sequestration strategy -- and have done so at great peril to the future of Liberty. While they acknowledge that Obama is intent on winning a socialist Democrat House majority in 2014, none have connected the dots on the role of sequestration in that strategy -- and it is a leading part.
While I offer below a few tangible examples of how Republicans should respond to Obama's high profile cuts in services and personnel "mandated by the Republican sequester," let me first lay out Obama's 2014 strategy again and see if it can break through the Beltway gauntlet against grassroots solutions.
1. Despite feigning dramatic opposition to the "Republican sequester" in his national "Chicken Little" tour, both Obama and his congressional Democrats wanted sequestration to occur as it is key to their strategy to use it as a noose to hang Republicans ahead of the 2014 midterm elections. To ensure the implementation of the "Republican sequester," Obama made Republicans an offer -- more taxes and no spending cuts -- that they could only refuse. If there remains any doubt that Obama intends to hang Republicans with this strategy, just consider an internal memo picked up by the Washington Times this week, in reply to an agency director who inquired about spreading sequester cuts to lessen their impact. The White House response: "However you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be."
2. Now that sequestration has been implemented, Obama and his NeoCom cadres will blame the "Republican Sequester" for any and all economic, national security and social ills near term. Obama knows that the net effect of his January $150 billion payroll and income tax hikes, on top of $489 billion in defense cuts already enacted, and estimates that ObamaCare premiums and taxes will add up to more than $500 billion, is a formula for sustained economic recession. Thus, from sequester forth, every negative economic GDP or jobs report, which in reality demonstrates the planned failure of Obama's socialist "recovery stimuli," will be blamed on the "Republican Sequester."
3. Though Obama dramatically overstated the immediate effect of sequester, that exaggeration was intentional. It got the attention of all of his most reliable government plantation constituents, and tens of millions of others who are in any measure dependent on the government for their welfare or income. In the coming weeks and months, when the burden of Obama's massive tax increases and continued unabated accumulation of debt shows up in poor economic reports, his constituents won't remember the pre-sequester hyperbole. They will only recall that he warned the nation about the terrible "Republican sequester." And when Obama employs his classist "politics of disparity" playbook to blame sequester "cuts" for every runny nose in America, with the full support of his public relations network, the Leftmedia and their MSM propaganda machinery, he may well lay the foundation for substantial Democrat victories in 2014.

Senators Bring Stirring Filibuster Against Obama CIA Nominee
"I rise today to begin to filibuster John Brennan's nomination for the CIA. I will speak until I can no longer speak. I will speak as long as it takes, until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important..." That was Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) on the Senate floor yesterday just before noon. With the help of several conservative Senators, he continued his filibuster until after midnight. In an unexpected twist during Brennan's confirmation fight, these Senators have raised uncomfortable issues for the Obama Administration. Despite failing to head off the earlier confirmations of weak national security nominees like Chuck Hagel and John Kerry, conservatives are digging in on Brennan. Once again, we have a marginally suited nominee with questionable policy choices and actions in his past. Brennan is being savaged for being the originator of and prime mover behind the overuse of drones and for ignoring the ideological basis (radical Islam) of the terrorists the U.S. is now facing. While the general concept of the use of drones to attack our enemies is well established, the recent comments by the Attorney General that there was an existing authority to use armed drones domestically against Americans has brought the issue a new scrutiny. As Heritage has stated before, use of armed drones inside the U.S. would be foolish and wrong. The Administration's assertion is a dangerous overreach. In general, the overuse of drones as the counterterrorism method of choice has turned into Obama's equivalent of Bill Clinton's use of cruise missiles. Both appear to be cheap and easy. Unfortunately, when used at the exclusion of other military and intelligence means, all you get is press coverage, but not lasting results. The President must utilize a comprehensive counterterrorism policy that uses all the tools available. Brennan insists that putting any focus on the radical ideology of the terrorists who presently threaten the U.S. would be counterproductive and wrong. This is ludicrous. How can a man lead the key U.S. intelligence organization when he rejects the explanatory values of ideology in this conflict? This is consistent with an Administration that called the terrorist murders committed by al-Qaeda disciple Nidal Hassan (the Fort Hood shootings) an "act of workplace violence." This President has gotten used to getting his own way-in policy, in personnel, even in the budget fights. The problem with a leader who gets such a taste of power is that he forgets the roles of the other branches of government. The issues being raised in the filibuster are legitimate and deserve real answers. Will the Senate stand up as a body and do its job? At least some of them are trying and are shining a light on subjects the powerful would prefer stay hidden. Several of the U.S. Senators rallying to Paul's side include some of conservatism's rising stars: Mike Lee of Utah, Ted Cruz of Texas, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, and Marco Rubio of Florida. They likely wouldn't be serving in the world's greatest deliberative body were it not for the work of Senator Jim DeMint, Heritage's president-elect. Conservatives should thank them for defending the Constitution and standing up for due process. LEARN MORE: Drones in U.S. Airspace: Principles for Governance

Thursday, March 7, 2013 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer
Obama Shifts Strategy? President Obama invited a dozen Republican senators to dinner last night. Rather than hosting them at the White House, where the president clearly has the upper hand, they met in neutral territory -- at the Jefferson Hotel. And Obama personally picked up the tab. I hope the senators realize that the dinner really was not free. Obama wants $600 billion more in taxes as the price for cutting back government. Next week, he will travel down Pennsylvania Avenue and attend the weekly luncheon with the entire Republican Senate caucus. That is something Obama has not done since May of 2010. In addition, President Obama has been making phone calls to key Republican leaders, such as Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee. The dinner is being widely hailed here in Washington for a variety of reasons. Many in the media noted that the president's new "charm offensive" is a dramatic shift in strategy and stands in stark contrast to his recent campaign-style rallies, where he aggressively attacked congressional Republicans as if the election were not over. Perhaps President Obama is considering his legacy. Sure he got Obamacare. But with his foreign policy in flames and the economy on the ropes, he has good reason to be concerned. A lot of pundits think last night's dinner is a sign that a "big deal" on entitlements and revenues can still be made between this president and congressional Republicans. According to the Washington Post President Obama still wants to get another $600 billion in tax increases, and may be willing to consider reforms to major entitlement programs in exchange for more revenue. Count me not only as a skeptic but also as someone who hopes there is no deal. No Deal After five years I think we have a pretty good understanding of who Barack Obama is. For there to be a deal, it would mean that Republicans would once again get up from the negotiating table only to discover they lost their pants during the negotiations. Emerging from the dinner last night, Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE), who voted for Chuck Hagel after announcing plans to retire next year, said, "His goal is ours -- we want to stop careening from crisis to crisis and solving every problem by meeting a crisis deadline." That is not what Barack Obama wants. He has manufactured these crises and attempted to blame each one on the GOP. Does the senator really not understand that? Perhaps he should take a moment to read Sunday's Washington Post report detailing how everything this White House does is designed to demonize Republicans so that Nancy Pelosi becomes Speaker of the House in 2014. This last manufactured crisis, the "dreaded" sequester, has been as big a fizzle as the massive snow storm that was supposed to hit Washington, D.C., yesterday. The public did not buy the president's hysterical claims about the sequester cuts. In fact, a new ABC poll asked whether or not Americans favored a 5% across-the-board cut in federal spending. Sixty-one percent said yes, while just 33% said no. I suspect that is the only reason Obama is making nice now. By the way, the same poll also found that the public overwhelmingly rejected (34%-to-60%) big cuts to defense spending, which is the traditional Republican position. It is clear to me that the president has two main goals: One is turn to us into a European-style socialist welfare state - a goal on which he sadly made tremendous progress. His other goal is to destroy the GOP so that his first goal can be more easily achieved in the years ahead. Many Republicans think that what is hurting them is that they are too resistant to President Obama. I submit that what will destroy them is not being resistant enough. Further compromising on tax increases and spending, values issues and the growth of the government will cause many committed conservatives to embrace a quixotic third party undertaking. If that happens, if the conservative opposition is divided, Obama and the left will own America. But if the GOP keeps learning the wrong lessons from their defeats, that is where we will end up. Senator Rand Paul's Filibuster While some Republican senators dined with President Obama last night, another GOP meeting was taking place on the Senate floor, led by Senator Rand Paul (R-KY). Senator Paul continues to raise his profile, perhaps with 2016's GOP presidential competition in mind. Yesterday he made waves by conducting a filibuster of John Brennan's nomination to head the CIA. But Brennan was just the excuse. Senator Paul chose the tactic because he was upset that the Obama Administration appeared to be open to using drones to kill U.S. citizens inside the United States who were determined to be Al Qaeda linked terrorists. This was not one of those wimpy filibusters that senators normally use in which there are merely repeated votes to end debate. This was an old fashioned talk-a-thon, similar to what Jimmy Stewart did in the classic movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Senator Paul actually spoke for 13 hours. Periodically he would yield the floor to friendly senators including Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Lee (R-UT), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and a few others who he could trust to yield back to him. Eventually, however, Paul had to end his efforts because "nature called" and he could not stay on the Senate floor indefinitely. Just a week ago, Senator Rand Paul disappointed me and many conservatives when he voted to confirm Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense. However, his filibuster last night has hit a nerve with many grassroots conservatives who want the GOP to more aggressively confront the Obama agenda. Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer said on Fox yesterday that Paul's effort may be the moment he becomes a national force. I agree. As a Reagan conservative I still have doubts about Senator Rand Paul's brand of libertarianism. But there will be plenty of time to sort that out in the presidential primaries. In the meantime, Senator Paul has taught his more cautious GOP colleagues what should have been obvious. Half the country feels every American value, everything we love, everything we cherish, is being trashed by Obama and his radical agenda. They yearn for courageous men and women who will stand up and confront the wrecking crew that currently has power. Honoring A Jihadi Sympathizer Tomorrow Secretary of State John Kerry and First Lady Michelle Obama will honor ten women from around the world with the International Women of Courage Award. The award was established during the Bush Administration to recognize women who have demonstrated courage and leadership on behalf of "women's rights and empowerment, often at great personal risk." Among this year's honorees is Samira Ibrahim of Egypt. Ibrahim was among the protestors in Tahrir Square who was subjected to the Egyptian military's "virginity tests." But she also happens to be an anti-Semitic jihadist sympathizer. For example, last year as mobs were attacking our embassy in Cairo and our consulate in Benghazi, Ibrahim tweeted, "Today is the anniversary of 9/11. May every year come with America burning." Ibrahim was overjoyed when a bus bombing last year in Bulgaria killed Israeli tourists. After hearing the news, she wrote, "An explosion on a bus carrying Israelis in Burgas airport in Bulgaria on the Black Sea. Today is a very sweet day with a lot of very sweet news." Last August, she tweeted one of her favorite Hitler quotes, "I have discovered with the passage of days, that no act contrary to morality, no crime against society, takes place, except with the Jews having a hand in it. Hitler." Kudos to Samuel Tadros of the Hudson Institute and our friends at The Weekly Standard for exposing Samira Ibrahim's disgusting anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism. Instead of giving her an award, she should be put back on a plane and sent back to Egypt.

Will the Left Finally Get the Tea Party Now? |
|
by Joel B. Pollak
Sen. Rand Paul's filibuster against the confirmation of CIA Director and "drone czar" John Brennan offers a "teachable moment" to the media and the left about the Tea Party. As they seethe in outrage and confusion that it took a Republican to question the constitutionality of drone attacks, it is important to remind our friends on the other side that it wasn't just any Republican, but a--gasp!--Tea Party Republican who spoke "truth to power."
Not only that, but the Senators who were first to offer their assistance were also Tea Party Republicans--the so-called McCarthyist Ted Cruz of Texas, and Marco "Water Break" Rubio of Florida. All three of these Senators won their primary elections against candidates favored by the Republican establishment. All three have been attacked by the left and smeared as racist and extremist for belonging to the Tea Party. Yet without them, no one from either party would have questioned a policy that the left once saw as a dangerous abuse of executive power.

There is still a ray of light that Obamacare can be overturned

With Republican governors acting like - well Republicans and crawling back to lick Barack Obama's boots, it IS hard to accept, but the fight against Obamacare is still on. The feckless and traitorous John Roberts may not have destroyed us after all.
A lawsuit against the worst elements of Obamacare brought by Liberty Counsel, which has of course been ignored by the Democrat controlled media, has been set for a rehearing by the U.S. Supreme Court. It will be reheard in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. Court observers describe this move as extremely rare and believe this means the matter will almost certainly find its way back up to the Supreme Court itself.
Acting on a Supreme Court directive Liberty Counsel, which is devoted to defending Christian civil rights, has filed a ... Continue Reading:There is still a ray of light that Obamacare can be overturned

Brennan wins Senate confirmation for CIA chief By Carlo Muñoz
The Senate confirmed John Brennan as director of the CIA Thursday, following a 13-hour filibuster led by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).
Brennan, the current White House counterterrorism chief, was approved to head the CIA, 63 to 34. The confirmation came after weeks of contentious hearings concerning Brennan's ties to the administration's armed drone program, and was capped by Paul's old-fashioned filibuster.

A medieval society can be defined in a variety of ways. In terms of class, there is more a pyramidal culture. Republican "Old Bulls" chastize Rand Paul, unconvincingly
Posted: 07 Mar 2013 04:37 PM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
John McCain and Lindsey Graham have blasted Rand Paul over his filibuster of the Brennan nomination. Quoting a Wall Street Journal editorial, McCain said: "If Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in college dorms." Graham wondered why Republican Senators had not been riled up over President Bush's use of drones. He also said that Paul's filibuster caused him to change from a "no" to a "yes" on confirming Brennan.
Like McCain and Graham, I was not impressed by Paul's decision to filibuster. But I'm similarly unimpressed by the "Old Bulls'" critique of their "Young Turk" colleague.
Let's start with McCain. Wasn't he the guy who recently rebuked Ted Cruz for making disrespectful comments about Chuck Hagel? Ridiculing Paul and his libertarian supporters, on the Senate floor, strikes me as inappropriately disrespectful.
Paul's filibuster may have been a political stunt or it may have been a genuine expression of the full extent of his outrage. Perhaps it had elements of both. In any case, McCain should not assume the worst. By doing so in inflammatory language, McCain makes it look like his beef is personal. With McCain, it usually is.
As for Graham, his question - where were Paul, Cruz, and those like Marco Rubio and Jerry Moran who supported the filibuster, during the Bush era - is easily answered. They weren't in the U.S. Senate.
In Paul's case, there's every reason to believe he would have opposed Bush's use of drones. Consistency isn't the junior Senator from Kentucky's problem when it comes to national security.
And what's up with Graham changing his vote on Brennan in response to Paul's filibuster? Brennan's fitness to be CIA Director doesn't turn on the conduct of Rand Paul. By basing his vote on the filibuster, Graham not only acted childishly, he abdicated his responsibility as a U.S. Senator.
The comments of McCain and Graham fall far short of the "adult supervision" they probably think they are offering Rand Paul.

March means the Zinfandel festival on the central coast next weekend, though I'll be away, and in any case I'm cutting back right now in my effort to shed a few el-bees. But with the turn of the calendar it's also time for the latest installment from the Paso Wine Guy; here's 45 seconds of total oenophilic awesomeness about Zinfandel:

P.J O'Wow!
Posted: 07 Mar 2013 08:10 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
P.J. O'Rourke
Churchill used to say somewhere that only someone with a sense of humor could understand the most serious things in life. That's one reason I've always told people that they should take the political humorist P.J. O'Rourke more seriously-deep down inside, his political humor is anchored in a grasp of some fundamental political truths. Like Will Rogers, or Mark Twain, his work conveys a serious teaching, and, like Jon Stewart and comics on the left, he can reach younger voters in ways that straight up commentary from old fogies likes me can't.
This is preface to bringing your attention to a bracing article O'Rourke wrote at the Weekly Standard right after the 2008 election and which recently surfaced again on several blogs. It is even more salient today than it was in 2008: "We Blew It." It is a thoroughgoing self-criticism of the complacency and mistakes of the conservative movement going back to the Reagan years. We had the left cornered in a box canyon, he says, and let them escape. And in recent years we've failed to perceive how the political landscape was shifting beneath our feet. There's some of the usual O'Rourkian wit here and there, but on the whole this is a deeply serious article. It is very much worth reading the whole thing, but herewith samples from the beginning and the end of the piece:
An entire generation has been born, grown up, and had families of its own since Ronald Reagan was elected. And where is the world we promised these children of the Conservative Age? Where is this land of freedom and responsibility, knowledge, opportunity, accomplishment, honor, truth, trust, and one boring hour each week spent in itchy clothes at church, synagogue, or mosque? It lies in ruins at our feet, as well it might, since we ourselves kicked the shining city upon a hill into dust and rubble. The progeny of the Reagan Revolution will live instead in the universe that revolves around Hyde Park. . . We, the conservatives, who do understand the free market, had the responsibility to-as it were-foreclose upon this mess. The market is a measurement, but that measuring does not work to the advantage of a nation or its citizens unless the assessments of volume, circumference, and weight are conducted with transparency and under the rule of law. We've had the rule of law largely in our hands since 1980. Where is the transparency? It's one more job we botched. Although I must say we're doing good work on our final task-attaching the garden hose to our car's exhaust pipe and running it in through a vent window. Barack and Michelle will be by in a moment with some subsidized ethanol to top up our gas tank. And then we can turn the key.
I don't agree with every particular of P.J.'s piece, but I agree with its self-critical spirit. (And in fact the chapter on the 1984 election in my Age of Reagan book makes the point that the Reagan campaign made a huge strategic blunder by not seeking to finish off liberalism and the Democratic Party in that election-that "morning in America" was a bad strategy for the long-run.) Here's part of how I put the matter in a memo I wrote and circulated to some conservative leaders a couple of years ago (before, needless to say, the re-election of Obama):
How did the Left get the drop on us? In the early- to mid-1990s we thought we had won on the major premises of politics and policy-Francis Fukuyama told us so!-such that what was needed from the likes of us was the technical work of unraveling piece-by-piece the architecture of the administrative-welfare state. The reasons for thinking this way were all around us, from the spectacular fall of the Berlin Wall to the market liberalizations proceeding apace in nearly every corner of the world to the spectacular rout of Hillarycare and the noticeable acceptance of market logic within Clintonite & Blairist liberalism. These encouraging signs were profoundly misleading. The problem with thinking you are riding a "wave of history" is that the wave might leave you stranded on a sandbar far from shore. Just ask Newt. I have a field theory for this that is simple but hopefully not simplistic. We should not repair behind exogenous excuses about the surprise of the housing bubble/financial collapse and the extraordinary phenomenon of Obamamania. The seeds of decay and regress should have been evident long before these events. We should be honest: we-our cause, our movement-became complacent. We became too narrowly focused on policy studies to the exclusion of the sustained public argument about the principles and practices of a free society that were the predicate of policy reforms. We forgot the "public" part of "public policy" studies. . . I don't think we ever fully appreciated, as Hayek did as far back as the 1960s, that the nature of the challenge from the Left would change profoundly going forward from that point, and become much more difficult. Instead I think the conservative intellectual movement, and its institutions, became entirely too self-congratulatory (which was one of the mistakes the Left made starting in the 1960s). In some ways we have become a mirror image of the very problem we are set against: we are bogged down in petty details instead of broad principles. Now, one obvious consequence of the loss of the conservative intellectual movement's focus on the broader public argument part of "public policy studies" is that we have a crop of presidential candidates who speak almost entirely in technocratic tones. And so we get a crop of candidates who promulgate 59-point jobs plans. Why not? That tends to be what they see from us [think tankers] most of the time. Conservatives who talk incessantly of finding "the next Reagan" are missing the point in looking for that particular skill set and style (though those are not unimportant things); a large part of what made Reagan effective was that he represented the culmination of a generation of patient public argument to change public opinion on general principles. For a variety of reasons I do not put much stock in the public opinion poll data that shows the public is "with us" on a variety of discrete questions.
Well, it was a long memo, and this is enough. But it does explain part of why I decided to leave Washington last year, and try something else. P.J.-let's party!

John Yoo helps Eric Holder out on drones
Posted: 07 Mar 2013 08:10 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
The prospect of drone attacks on American citizens here in the U.S. is at or below the bottom of the list of things we should be worried about. But Eric Holder bears a share of the blame for this silly sideshow because of his failure to provide cogent answers to questions about the subject.
For some sorely needed clarity on this matter, let's turn to John Yoo at Ricochet:
[In his letter to Rand Paul] Holder said that the use of lethal force would be "entirely hypothetical, unlikely to occur, and one we hope no president will ever have to confront," but might be necessary to stop a "catastrophic attack" like the December 7, 1941, or September 11, 2001, attacks on the homeland. Holder may have the right idea, but because of his misunderstanding of the law and his political tin ear, he is only frightening the American people - though this seems to be the administration's preferred approach to politics these days. Holder's first mistake is that he thinks that the use of force by drones, no matter where or against whom, is governed by due process. Recall the Justice Department white paper on drones, which asserted that lethal force could not be used against al-Qaeda members unless they could not be captured, harm to the United States was imminent, and due process allows the attack - concepts that govern law-enforcement officers who might need to shoot an attacking criminal, but have never governed the use of force by the military in wartime. But since Holder has made the claim that the drone attacks abroad somehow meet law-enforcement standards, it is an easy step for him to say that those same diluted, weakened standards don't pose much barrier to the use of drones at home.
How should Holder have responded?
[He] should have said is that the U.S. would only be able to use drones on U.S. soil under the same conditions it might use military force domestically - to stop an invasion by a foreign country or an attack. And it is not because due process somehow allows it, but because the nation is entitled to use military force against foreign attack. So it is not just December 7 or September 11 that uniquely call for military force because the U.S. is responding to an attack on the nation. What about an invasion, as in the War of 1812, or the Civil War, or, on a smaller scale, a situation like the Mumbai terrorist attacks where groups of heavily armed terrorists attacked high-profile, civilian targets not with airliners, but with light arms? If the federal government can use military force, such as troops or helicopters to stop those kinds of attacks, surely it can use drones. But where Holder and this administration are causing fear is because, if they believe the use of drones now, abroad, meet law-enforcement standards, then they believe they could use drones in similar situations domestically to enforce the laws, not to respond to attack. And that is manifestly wrong as a legal matter as well as mistaken as a matter of policy.
So even when Holder is right, he's wrong. Can anyone think of a worse cabinet member in a top-tier post? I can't.

How Halligan was halted
Posted: 07 Mar 2013 07:43 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
It's not easy for Senate Republicans successfully to filibuster President Obama's judicial nominees; nor, in my view, should it be. How, then, did Republicans succeed in blocking Caitlin Halligan's nomination?
The one word answer, if we're honest, is: guns.
It's not that Halligan's left-liberalism is confined to Second Amendment issues. It extends to the full range of controversial legal issues as to which she is on record including, most notably, national security.
But, as Curt Levey of the Committee for Justice (CFJ) has argued, "guns are the new abortion" in the judicial confirmation process:
[With] the Supreme Court's 2008 [Heller] decision recognizing the Second Amendment as an individual right ... the Justices transferred the theater of war from legislatures to the judiciary. ... That's why ... gun owners - their fate tied to the selection of judges in the wake of Heller - [have become] a potent part of the coalition advocating against liberal judicial activism and for judges who strictly interpret the Constitution.
Had not the potency of this part of the coalition been brought to bear, it's likely that Halligan would have been confirmed.
Democrats hoped and the media speculated that the national reaction to the Newtown shootings would make Halligan's campaign against firearms look more sympathetic, thus boosting her chances of confirmation. They were wrong. On Halligan's first cloture vote in December 2011, she fell 6 votes short. She fell 9 votes short on the second cloture vote today. Both times, only one GOP senator - Murkowski (R-AK) - voted for her. Why did Newtown fail to soften concerns about Halligan's Second Amendment record? We suspect it's both because the post-Newtown "fervor" for gun control has been greatly exaggerated and because the prospect of new gun control legislation has made GOP senators more sensitive to the Second Amendment records of judicial nominees who, if confirmed, will determine the constitutionality of any new gun laws.
In the future, I think we can expect the Obama adminstration to nominate judges who aren't on the record when it comes to the Second Amendment.

We had a great statewide conference call Monday night during which we laid out a strategy for engaging the governor and our state legislators to tell them not to expand Pennsylvania's Medicaid program.
In case you missed the call, you can go to www.afp-pa.org and sign up to adopt an action.
Expanding Medicaid would add between 800,000 and 1 Million to the program's rolls taking the total from 1 in 6 Pennsylvanians to 1 in 4 (over 3 million people) by 2021. The new unfunded liability would reach over $4 billion by that same year.
Pennsylvania already has the second highest per capita Medicaid costs in the nation and is fourth overall in total expenditures, coming in at $8.2 billion in 2012. The program made up 30 percent of the state's total budget, well above the national average of 23 percent. Learn more here.
For those on the Left and even some Republicans (like Bucks County Rep. Gene DiGirolamo, contact info below) who argue that expanding Medicaid using new federal and state spending will help the economy, the answer is simple: Strong, vibrant and sustainable economies are not built on crony capitalism and borrowed money.
In short, adding one million people to Medicaid will explode the state budget, leading to drastic cuts to education, vital road and bridge repairs and/or much higher taxes, which will hurt the economy.
What you can do:
Go to www.afp-pa.org and sign up to adopt an action: phone calling to the Governor and state legislators, letters to the editor, circulating petitions, and social media bombs.
Also consider an "Adopt A Day Commitment": You personally recruit 5 other people to work with you to implement the tactic you selected. We want to grow our movement by using personal invitations from friends and family members to take action. This is what the Left calls community organizing and what those who believe in economic freedom and less government must do better.
Next Action for AFP-PA:
When you sign up as a leader, our field coordinators Matt Hissy and Randy DeSoto will be reaching out to you via email to confirm your date. We will work with leaders on your given day to maximize the impact of the tactic you have chosen to utilize.
Below you will find two links to help to prepare prior to making phone calls.

Protecting the Many Victims of Obamacare by Sarah Torre, Research Assistant at The Heritage Foundation
Yesterday, Representatives Diane Black (R-TN), Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), and John Fleming (R-LA) introduced the Health Care Conscience Rights Act, which seeks to protect the constitutional freedom of individuals and employers to live and act in accordance with their deeply held beliefs.
The Obamacare mandate that forces almost all employers to provide and pay for coverage of abortion-inducing drugs and contraception-regardless of moral or religious objection-places business owners and employees in an untenable situation, forcing them to choose between their faith and their work.
"The health care law puts my family in an impossible dilemma," explains Carrie Kolesar, part owner of Seneca Hardwood Lumber Company in Cranberry, PA, which is suing over the mandate. "[W]e have to choose between violating our freedom of conscience and giving up freedoms protected under the Constitution, or facing severe government penalties that will harm our families and put us out of business. No American should be faced with a decision like that."
The threat of crippling federal fines-to the tune of up to $100 per employee per day-could very well mean the closure of job-creating companies. Autcam Corp. and Autocam Medical in Grand Rapids, Michigan, also plaintiffs in a lawsuit over the mandate, face up to $24 million in fines per year unless the companies fall in line with the mandate. CEO John Kennedy explains: I don't understand why the Obama Administration is attacking two manufacturing companies that provide 680 jobs with an average hourly W-2 of $53,000, and are hiring-especially when most of those jobs are in a state like Michigan. The Administration has explicitly denied for-profit companies any protection from the Obamacare mandate, ignoring the role of faith and values in some business owners' work and success. Protecting Americans from the coercion of this particular Obamacare mandate is important and necessary. But even if the rule is rescinded or thrown out by a court, the government will retain the authority through other parts of Obamacare to coerce insurance companies and employers and trample on individuals' constitutional freedoms by imposing additional objectionable mandates.
Americans deserve more. Individuals should be able to choose health care that best fits the needs of their families and respects their freedom. Employers should be able to build and grow job-creating businesses in accordance with their values without threat of government penalties.
Health care reform that increases access, decreases costs, and puts control over personal health care decisions back in the hands of the American people is possible. The first step on the road to freedom is rescinding the Obamacare mandate-and protecting Americans' liberties more generally will require full repeal of Obamacare.

Obamacare's Costly Medicaid Expansion: How Does Your State Fare?
Obamacare's Medicaid expansion is touted by the law's proponents as a "no-brainer." While it is true that some states may see projected savings, it is erroneous to claim that this experience applies to every state.
Proponents predict that by expanding Medicaid, states will be able to reduce payments to health care providers, such as hospitals, for uncompensated care. As a matter of fact, nationally, the opposite is true: - 40 of 50 states are projected to see increases in costs due to the Medicaid expansion.
- The majority of states see costs exceed savings when the federal match rate is lowered after the first three years. From there, state costs continue to climb, dwarfing any projected savings.
- State savings are concentrated in large states. New York is estimated to see $33 billion in savings, while Massachusetts is estimated to save $6 billion over 10 years. Because of the design of their current programs, these states have a unique opportunity to restructure their programs and transfer significant cost to the federal ledger.
The Medicaid expansion represents a massive increase in federal and state spending. Although some claim that states could experience savings, it is clear that this is the exception, not the rule. Expanding Medicaid will ultimately cost states in the long run.

Senator Mike Lee: "Heaven help us all" if President can use drones on U.S. soil
Joining the filibuster effort were a handful of young, grassroots Senators in the GOP -- not too surprisingly, they were mostly the new guard. These bright new faces of the GOP are comprised of a rare few who actually value the founding principles of this country and its founding documents, namely the Constitution.
