DHS Purchases 2,700 Light-Armored Tanks to Go With Their 1.6 Billion Bullet Stockpile
 | DHS-HSI Homeland Security Investigations El Paso SRT MRAP Armored Vehicle |
America is swiftly turning into a kind of Left-wing socialist totalitarian police state...
Drones overhead, all of your webernetz activity databased forever, the DHS and other government agencies morphing into domestic military forces, checkpoints everywhere you travel, the president worshiped, etc.
The founders are rolling in their graves...
Are they going to fly a drone over each and every local Democratic Party headquarter in all 16,000 counties? Or over each and every local union office? Over each city hall? America is not a country of ragheads living in the mountains. We have large cities in which to hide. We have a large country with a large, well armed, population.
There are not enough drones in the world to threaten ALL of us. Obama and Napolitano are engaging is psyops - an attempt to cow us with reports about magic armored cars and magic drones (they only carry 2 hellfire missiles) - assuming that Congress funds them and allows them to operate in America. Which is not a done deal.
He has to create enough chaos before the 2016 election, so that he can start enough civil unrest to declare marshal law and suspend the election. His goal is to become supreme dictator with no one stopping him. Every day a step closer.

Missouri Dept. of Revenue Allegedly Compiling Data on Concealed Carry Holders, Forwarding It to Company With Ties to Gov't
The Blaze | Jason Howerton | Mar. 5, 2013 3:46am
A Southeast Missouri man has sued after being told by a license office that it would make digital copies of documents needed for a permit to carry a concealed weapon. The Missouri Department of Revenue has allegedly been compiling data on Missouri residents seeking concealed carry permits and then forwarding it to a third party with ties to the federal government.
Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder held a press conference on Monday and revealed the lawsuit had been filed to fight the action and prevent any violation of Americans' privacy.
The lawsuit was filed Monday by Stoddard County prosecuting attorney Russ Oliver on behalf of Missouri resident Eric Griffin. Oliver filed the lawsuit as a private attorney.

Report: Obama Wants Timetable for Israeli Pullout
Unconfirmed report in World Tribune says Obama wants a detailed Israeli withdrawal plan from Netanyahu.
By Gil Ronen
3/4/2013
U.S. President Barack Obama has demanded a timetable for an Israeli withdrawal from Judea and Samaria, according to an unconfirmed report by World Tribune.
The report quotes anonymous "Israeli sources."
According to the report, Obama, who is scheduled to arrive in Israel on March 20, wants Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to present him with a detailed Israeli withdrawal plan during his visit to Israel. The sources said the Israeli plan "would be considered in what could be an imminent U.S. initiative to establish a Palestinian state in the West Bank in 2014."
"Obama has made it clear to Netanyahu that his visit is not about photo-ops, but the business of Iran and a Palestinian state," a source said. "The implication is that if Israel won't give him something he can work with, then he'll act on his own."
The sources noted that "Obama aides" have stressed that Congress supports the establishment of a Palestinian state as a U.S. priority.
"The Obama people are making this a litmus test of Netanyahu's leadership and credibility," the Israeli sources said. "Obama supporters in Congress have sent Netanyahu a similar message."

PA Liquor Sales Privatization
What is going on with PA Liquor privatization? PA House majority leader Turzai will introduce a House Bill on March 4. The bill number is HB 790. This bill is supported by Governor Corbett and will essentially privatize liquor sales in Pennsylvania. With control of both the Senate and the House in the control of Republicans, this bill should "sail through" both chambers and be signed by the Governor. The problem is that not all Republicans are on the same page. Rep. John Taylor, the lone Republican House member from Philadelphia is the Chair of the House Liquor Control Committee. He has previously gutted privatization bills. He has stated that he "wants to slow things down" and "avoid the chaotic process that other states have experienced." Therefore, we need citizens to email and call members of the committee and ask them to support privatization now. Example: Dear Representative ________ I urge you to support HB 790 to privatize the PA State Stores. Please do not allow special interest amendments to slow the process down with partial privatization over time. It is time to quit talking and take the action supported by the citizens of the state and Governor Corbett. It is time to get the Commonwealth to get out of the booze business and focused on its regulatory responsibilities. Thank you. Who are the members of this committee? If your representative is on this committee organize an email and phone call operation NOW. Republican Members: Taylor, John, Chair Miccarelli, Nicholas A, III, Secretary Mustio, Mark, Subcommittee Chair on Marketing Payne, John D., Subcommittee Chair on Licensing Delozier, Sheryl M., Ellis, Brian L., Kampf, Warren, Killion, Thomas H., Krieger, Timothy Lawrence, John A., Masser, Kurt A., Petri, Scott A., Reese, Mike, Regan, Mike, Sonney, Curtis G. Democrat Members: Costa, Paul, Chair Davis, Tina M., Democratic Secretary Kotik, Nick, Subcommittee Democratic Chair on Licensing Mahoney, Tim, Subcommittee Democratic Chair on Marketing

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
|
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
- Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
- Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

Important Dates:
- February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
- February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
- March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
- April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.
Any questions, holler.

Dear Patriots:
Our next meeting of the Philadelphia Tea Party Patriots-Lower Bucks will be March 6, 2013 at 7 PM. PLEASE NOTE; THIS MEETING IS ON A WEDNESDAY!! The meeting will take place at Erwin's Country Kitchen, 4059 Brownsville Road in Trevose.
We're looking to increase our group! Join us...bring a friend or two.
An invitation has gone out to Concerned Gun Owners of Bucks County to speak at our meeting. The 2nd Amendment must be a concern of all law-abiding citizens. We CANNOT let the opposition infringe upon our God given rights.
Mike Henry was hired as the Philadelphia Regional Coordinator for Heritage Action. Mike will be speaking to our group at the meeting. He joined Heritage Action after successfully running a local outreach campaign as an intern for American Majority Action in southeastern Pennsylvania. During the campaign, he worked closely with local tea party groups to organize their canvassing efforts. He is an alumnus of Archmere Academy, in Claymont, Delaware, and will be a 2013 graduate from Pennsylvania State University. Heritage Action is the Pennsylvania think tank of Heritage Foundation which is being led by former Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC).
We have persons within our group who give a short summary of what is happening in their community.
What are the hot issues in Harrisburg? How do you feel about Governor Corbett's budget? liquor privatization? Agenda 21?
Why is Penn State on the New Drone Authorization List? Who is funding these drones?
How do you feel about Immigration? the "No Labels" group in Congress? and lots more discussion.

We would like to clarifiy the Prothonotary candidates for the upcoming Republican Primary are Michelle Christian (not Diane) and Pat Bachtle. It does not change a call for an open primary in this race.
Why all the fuss about a Prothonotary race?
If you have wondered what a Prothonotary is, you are not alone. In addition, whoever thought that it would be the focus of a power struggle within the Bucks County GOP for the 2013 elections?
There are two people running for Prothonotary this May. Pat Bachtle a long time incumbent and a newcomer Diane Christian. On paper this looks ok, but when you take a closer look, more questions than answers arise.
The Tea Party should be happy to see a newcomer on the ticket. Right?
We should be happy to see the incumbent challenged by a newcomer. Right? Except this newcomer was hand selected by Bucks County GOP Chairwoman Pat Poprik.
Do you remember the countless "newcomers" who have tried to run for office in the past few years? They were handily dismissed by the party leadership and told that positions only go to those who have worked hard for the party over several years. Pat Bachtle is the incumbent Prothonotary and has worked for the party for many years. Now Pat Poprik is embracing a newcomer that she has hand selected with no prior experience or record. There is clearly a double standard.
One does not have to think too hard to figure out what the reaction would be to an unknown Tea Party candidate running against an established incumbent. Remember when the GOP called the Constables to intervene against non-endorsed GOP candidates in 2010?
Why is the party chair deciding to pick this fight when Bucks County is becoming more liberal? This has the potential to leave the seat wide open for a Democrat grab. Bucks County GOP money should not be spent in a primary for a Prothonotary seat. This is foolish and wasteful use of resources.
We at The Kitchen Table Patriots
are calling for an Unendorsed Primary. Let the best candidate win. The registered Republicans of Bucks County should decide on primary election day who should be the next Prothonotary on the Republican ticket. Not a small group of GOP County Executives, half of which were appointed by the Chair of the Party. It doesn't seem like a fair process does it.
If you are a registered Republican and live in Bucks County Pennsylvania we are urging you to contact your local committee person and ask them to vote for no endorsement. If you do not know who you committee person is than call the Bucks County Republican Headquarters at 215-345-8811
Also We urge you to clear your calendar and attend the Bucks County GOP executive committee meeting on Thursday March 7 at PM. at the Republican Headquarters in Doylestown. The is the night that the executive committee, half of which were hand picked by the county chair will endorse. Come and speak your mind to your elected Executive. Let the Republican party know you are watching and paying attention.

Important Announcement from SFL
|
You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.
Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.
I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.
Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".
Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.
Click here to read my blog post on the SFL website about our first DVD.

If you've been wanting an interesting, clearly written, how-to-manual for identifying and fighting UN Agenda 21, here it is. Agenda 21--All the information you need to understand what is happening in your town, why it's happening, who is behind it, and what you can do to stop it. BEHIND THE GREEN MASK: U.N. Agenda 21 is 172 pages of truth. Part history, part current events, part hand-to-hand combat, and part blueprint for keeping your freedom, this is one book that you'll put to work immediately. Boots on the ground and all hands on deck is the order of the day. Awareness is the first step in the Resistance.
|
Awareness about Agenda 21 is finally spreading throughout the country, due in no small part to your efforts. But knowing it is there isn't enough. Now we need to educate ourselves on how to combat it. That's where you come in.
American Policy Center has recently released a booklet that explains everything you need to know to start fighting back against sustainable programs both locally and nationally. The booklet is called Special Report: Agenda 21 and How to Stop It and is available in the APC store for only $5.95.
I wrote this 35 page booklet in order to give activists a succinct resource they can refer to if they suspect Agenda 21 or Sustainable Development is being implemented in their area. It includes my own research coupled with incredibly helpful graphics created by Carroll County, Maryland Commissioner Richard Rothschild.
In the booklet you will find answers to several roadblocks that grassroots anti-Agenda 21 activists often face, including a definition of property rights and "Resolution to Protect Citizens' Property Rights," which many concerned citizens are already using to tie the hands of power hungry politicians.
This booklet is a great resource for anyone interested in preserving their property rights. It includes all the information to put up a first line of defense and step by step instructions for how to proceed from there. If you face Agenda 21 or Sustainable development in your area or are simply concerned with the national fight this booklet is a must read.
Click here to order your booklet now!

Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
- You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
- I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.

Subject: Great Sources of information---Please keep in folder.
From a Fellow Patriot that was kind enough to put this together.
I spoke with someone recently regarding web sites/groups and subscriptions to information/news feeds. This is a listing of many such which may be of use to folks. The number of emails can get overwhelming at times, so check out the sites and see what suits your need. I recommend, though to be sure to subscribe to at least #1 Tea Party Patriots and #2 Americans for Prosperity. Groups/web sites for keeping up on issues, events, etc. 1. Tea Party Patriots (National) http://www.teapartypatriots.org Dot's note ► From this site, you can get to state and local group sites. Basically, this is our "Home page" for information on the national level. Great site to keep up with issues within the "realm" of the Tea Party's core values: Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets and constitutionally limited Government. They have many citizen journalists who contribute. Also, information on events, etc. From the site: ABOUT TEA PARTY PATRIOTS The Tea Party movement spontaneously formed in 2009 from the reaction of the American people to fiscally irresponsible actions of the federal government, misguided "stimulus" spending, bailouts and takeovers of private industry. Within the first few weeks of the movement, Tea Party Patriots formed to support the millions of Americans seeking to improve our great nation through renewed support for fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies. Tea Party Patriots is a national grassroots organization that exists to serve and support the thousands of local organizations and millions of grassroots Patriots throughout our nation. We provide logistical, educational, networking and other support to thousands of community-based tea party groups around the country. Tea Party Patriots state and national coordinators serve your local grassroots groups, support you with the tools and technology you need to address your local issues, listen to your voices, gather your ideas, and together help shape the overall direction of our national movement. Working in a truly grassroots fashion, we have already changed the political landscape of America. TEA PARTY PATRIOTS IS 100% GRASSROOTS, 100% OF THE TIME. Tea Party Patriots is made up of, and funded by, millions of regular Americans just like you, who believe there is a better way forward for America. We are a non-profit 501(c)(4) organization that does not support any political party nor do we endorse candidates. If you support fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies, we encourage you to sign up for Tea Party Patriots today. 2. Americans for Prosperity (AFP) http://americansforprosperity.org/ Dot's note ► Great organization, super info. they sponsor/organize many events in the area and DC. Jennifer Stefano is the PA State Director. You've most likely seen her on Fox News Channel. From the web site: OUR MISSIONS Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process. AFP is an organization of grassroots leaders who engage citizens in the name of limited government and free markets on the local, state, and federal levels. AFP grassroots activists advocate for public policies that champion the principles of entrepreneurship and fiscal and regulatory restraint. To that end, AFP supports: Cutting taxes and government spending in order to halt the encroachment of government in the economic lives of citizens by fighting proposed tax increases and pointing out evidence of waste, fraud, and abuse. Removing unnecessary barriers to entrepreneurship and opportunity by sparking citizen involvement early in the regulatory process in order to reduce red tape. Restoring fairness to our judicial system. WHO WE ARE The heart and soul of AFP is our citizen activists. They organize events, write letters to the editor, and petition their lawmakers to uphold freedom and prosperity. Americans for Prosperity has more than 1,800,000 activists in all 50 states and 34 state chapters and affiliates. More than 90,000 Americans in all 50 states have made a financial contribution to AFP or our sister organization, AFP Foundation. WHAT WE DO AFP's network of organized and influential citizen leaders in a growing number of states throughout the country is working to change the nation one state at a time. AFP mobilizes citizens to effectively make their voices heard in public policy issue campaigns. AFP educates citizens about where their elected officials stand on our issues. AFP combines "best-in-class" capabilities built once at the national level with local knowledge from our state staff and on-the-ground grassroots to create economies of scale that win. AFP leverages our comparative advantages with those of other groups by building coalitions of local, state, and national grassroots organizations fighting for a common cause. 3. Freedom Connecter http://connect.freedomworks.org/ Dot's note ► A great site to connect with others. Register, then browse for folks who are near your residence or elsewhere who share your views. I have connections in CA, NY, NC, AL, TX, MO and FL. 4. FreedomWorks for America (FWFA) https://www.freedomworksforamerica.org/ From the web site: FreedomWorks for America (FWFA) is focused on spearheading bottom-up grassroots campaigns on behalf of candidates who will promote economic freedom. Unlike other PACs and organizations, FreedomWorks for America will aggressively support candidates who will defend freedom, even in political primaries against establishment or incumbent Republicans. And instead of spending funds on traditional methods like TV and radio advertisements, our financial resources will primarily be spent mobilizing our over a million-strong volunteer base to promote candidates who are champions of freedom. We are the only group with the grassroots base and the campaign expertise to make a real impact on the ground in races across the country. WHAT WE DO FreedomWorks for America utilizes its over a million-strong grassroots volunteer base to elect candidates who fight for lower taxes, less government, and more freedom. WHY WE DO IT FreedomWorks for America believes individual liberty and the freedom to compete increases consumer choices and provides individuals with the greatest control over what they own and earn. FreedomWorks for America aims to elect real champions of freedom who will stand up for these principles in the face of Washington establishment pressure, and who will be standard bearers for the grassroots to rally behind. HOW WE DO IT FreedomWorks for America's aggressive, real-time campaigns activate a growing and permanent volunteer grassroots army to show up and demand that our elected officials stand up for freedom. Our decentralized approach means that we have the capability to directly impact elections across the country through citizen action on the local level. 5. Obama Administration Buries Good News on Keystone Pipeline
In Washington, a presidential Administration releases news it doesn't like at 5 p.m. on Fridays. So it pays to pay attention when everyone is leaving work for the weekend. Late last Friday, the State Department released a positive environmental review of the Keystone XL pipeline. President Obama has been delaying this pipeline-which would carry oil from Canada to refineries in Texas-for more than three years. The delay has meant that America is still waiting on an additional 700,000 to 830,000 barrels of oil per day from a close ally, not to mention 179,000 American jobs. Why has this taken so long, when all environmental reports thus far have been positive? Heritage's Nicolas Loris, the Herbert and Joyce Morgan Fellow, explains:
Given the need for jobs and more oil on the global market to offset high prices, the permit application had been moving along positively with bipartisan support without much attention until environmental activists made blocking the Keystone XL pipeline their issue to rally around for 2011. Although President Obama and the Department of State (DOS) said they'd make a decision at the end of 2011, they ultimately catered to a narrow set of special interests, punting the decision until after the 2012 elections.
The State Department, which is overseeing the pipeline because it crosses a U.S. border, has "already conducted a thorough, three-year environmental review with multiple comment periods," Loris reported last year. The review has been comprehensive:
DOS studied and addressed risk to soil, wetlands, water resources, vegetation, fish, wildlife, and endangered species. They concluded that the construction of the pipeline would pose minimal environmental risk. Keystone XL also met 57 specific pipeline safety standard requirements created by DOS and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
Canada has oil to sell, and it isn't likely to wait forever. Forbes writer Brigham McCown said that "Delays in approving the upper portion of the pipeline have bewildered many Canadians who see the U.S. as their closest ally and trading partner." McCown pointed out that "Even without the pipeline, Canada will continue to extract the oil which would be most likely transported by pipeline and rail to Canada's coast for shipment to Asian markets." Because the State Department is overseeing the application, the new Secretary of State, John Kerry, will be giving his recommendation on the pipeline. Ultimately, the decision rests with President Obama. But Heritage's David Kreutzer says Congress can, and should, step in if the President continues to block it:
Should the President reject Keystone again, Congress should wield its power to regulate commerce with foreign nations and approve the pipeline's construction once the State Department again finishes its review of the rerouted project.
These delays are pointless. The Keystone pipeline has passed its environmental reviews, and the Obama Administration is only hurting America by holding it up.

Wonderful News to Start the Week: A Breakthrough in Treating AIDS?
This week begins with perhaps the very best of news . . .
Doctors say they have cured an infant born with HIV for the first time by giving her a cocktail of drugs shortly after birth, a result that could point the way toward saving the lives of thousands more infected children.
The baby, whose identity has been kept anonymous, began taking a regimen of AIDS drugs about 30 hours after she was born at a rural Mississippi hospital, doctors said today at medical meeting in Atlanta. At 18 months, the mother took the child off the medication. With no signs of the virus for 10 months, the infant was deemed "functionally cured," researchers said.
HIV treatments can hold the disease at bay, though stopping the drugs can be a death sentence since it allows infected cells secreted within the immune system to re-emerge, spreading the virus anew. Administering the mix of drugs right after birth may have stopped the virus from forming hidden reservoirs. If confirmed in further studies, the approach could help cure some of the 300,000 children infected each year with the AIDS virus.
"Some babies here in the U.S. and Western Europe, and an awful lot of babies in the developing world don't have the opportunity for prevention," said Hannah Gay, who treated the infant at the University of Mississippi in Jackson. "There would be scores of babies that would benefit if we can find a strategy for intervention that allows us to make this happen in other babies."
Apparently the doctors themselves couldn't believe it at first:
"My first thought was, 'oh my goodness. We have been treating an uninfected child," Gay told NBC News. "But I checked the records which confirmed she was, in fact, infected."
Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga of the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine, who also worked on the study, piled on with a battery of tests. Even a sensitive test called PCR, which can help find tiny bits of genetic material from a virus, couldn't detect any evidence of HIV.
"What we did then was to get a group of collaborating laboratories together to apply ultra-sensitive testing and say 'can we detect any evidence of virus'," Luzuriaga says. They did eventually find pieces of genetic material from the virus.
But Persaud has been unable to find any evidence of virus that can invade cells or replicate. "So the baby has remained off treatment. We are just watching and we will follow the baby and do additional testing."
Now, of course, there's a catch . . .
Researchers cautioned that the report on the baby girl involves just one patient, and the findings appear to have little immediate relevance to people who contract HIV as adults or adolescents and are almost always diagnosed and treated long after their initial infection. But if further study confirms that very early treatment can cure HIV-infected newborns, it could spur widespread use of such an aggressive regimen in babies born with HIV, nearly all of them in low- and middle-income countries.
Shocking News: Dennis Rodman Meets with North Koreans! Also, Dennis Rodman Is Still Alive!
This weekend was dominated by perhaps the very weirdest of news:
In his first interview since returning to the U.S. from an unprecedented visit to North Korea last week, former NBA star Dennis Rodman said he bears a message for President Obama from the country's oppressive leader, Kim Jong Un.
"He wants Obama to do one thing: Call him," Rodman told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week." "He said, 'If you can, Dennis -- I don't want [to] do war. I don't want to do war.' He said that to me."
The athlete also offered Kim some diplomatic advice for potential future talks with President Obama.
"[Kim] loves basketball. And I said the same thing, I said, 'Obama loves basketball.' Let's start there," Rodman said.
Rodman's comments come just days after the basketball star shocked the world with an unexpected trip to Pyongyang, North Korea, becoming the first known American to publicly meet with the mysterious Kim since he assumed command of the totalitarian nation after the death of his father, Kim Jong-Il in 2011.
This is one of those news stories I hate, because the news itself is so spectacularly absurd, it's almost impossible to mock.
Almost.
Boy, quite the "get" there, huh, George Stephanopolous? You advised Clinton and anchor Good Morning America, and now you have to treat the NBA's equivalent to Ruby Rhod like he's the second coming of Henry Kissinger. You know, back in 2008, we mocked Obama as a "celebrity." Now we've reached the point where guys who can't qualify for Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice are running around the world holding summits with the world's most dangerous men. It's enough to leave you yearning for the gravitas and seriousness of Jesse Jackson's freelance diplomacy.
Next week, Scottie Pippin tries to talk down Bashar Assad, and Phil Jackson is supposed to meet with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, because talking the Iranians out of their nuclear program will be easier than picking up the pieces of what's left of the Lakers after this year.
You should have stuck it out with him, Carmen Electra! Anyone could have seen this man was going places!
The entire bizarre spectacle left Bethany Mandel fuming:
Upon leaving the country, Rodman promised that Kim would have a "friend for life" and declared that Kim Jong-un was an "awesome guy" and that his father and grandfather, other homicidal leaders of the country, were "great leaders."
What could have prompted this effusiveness from Rodman? Despite the country's total lack of infrastructure, freedom and food supply, enormous shows and basketball matches were put together for Rodman, the Harlem Globetrotters and their entourage. It's not likely Rodman was aware of the dire situation for most North Koreans given that as he boarded his flight he tweeted about looking forward to meeting South Korean pop star Psy. Even as he was about to enter the country, Rodman couldn't differentiate between the poverty-striken North and the affluent and capitalist South.
Many stories in the news media of the visit included reports of the human rights situation in the country. CNN's Wolf Blitzer declared Rodman achieved a "diplomatic triumph," however a report from his own network told a different story:
It was unclear whether Rodman, who is accompanied by Globetrotters Bull Bullard, Buckets Blakes and Moose Weekes, will be taken to North Korea's countryside, where aid groups say malnutrition is rampant.
According to Human Rights Watch, hundreds of thousands of people remain enslaved in prison camps, which are "notorious for horrific living conditions and abuse."
It appears the North Koreans provided the group with "a feast" amidst a reported famine.
She points out that the silver lining is that North Korea's brutality is back in the headlines again.
One other upside? For once, we can't blame the Obama administration for going over and treating one of the world's most ruthless regimes as if they're hunky dory. Unlike some people we know . . .
All in all, the trip represents an opportunity missed: Why couldn't the North Koreans keep Rodman?
Finally, maybe this can all be chalked up to sleepless nights: "North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un is a new father after his wife secretly gave birth to a child that intelligence officials believe could emerge as the communist dynasty's fourth hereditary dictator."
A Few Brief Recommendations of Who to Follow and Read . . .
On a good day, with not too much work to do, I would find the time to read . . .

Listen to Jimmie Bise Jr.'s podcast, and finally get around to listening to the new one with Kristina Ribali . . .
Then I would cruise around the states, checking Ralston Reports (Nevada), The Shark Tank (Florida), Bearing Drift (Virginia), Red Mass Group (Massachusetts), Save Jersey (New Jersey), Politics PA (Pennsylvania) . . .
Then head onto Twitter and check out what's new with Politics of Amy, Nathan Wurtzel, Biased Girl, Dave Weigel, Cait Meisenheimer, Stevie J.West, Rick Wilson, Dina Fraioli, Katetharsis, Kurt Schlichter, Kurt Loder, Kevin Eder, AGConservative, Seton Motley, Richard Grenell, Patrick Ruffini, Sean Hackbarth, Soren Dayton, Mike Krempasky, Marshall Manson, Rob Bluey, Amelia Hamilton, Ed Frank, Ben Howe, Brittany Cohan, Chris Barron, Elizabeth "E" Crum, Lorie Byrd, BitterB, J.P. Freire, and my brother . . .
. . .
And believe it or not, I'm sure I'm forgetting some people.
As you may guess, I don't have that many good days.
ADDENDUM: Sean Trende notices, "Oh wow. Obama took a gainer in Gallup over the weekend, to 46/46. Friday's sample must've been brutal."
Maybe the sequester cut his job approval by a lot more than 2 percent.

RedState Morning Briefing
For March 5, 2013
If you live in the real world, you will notice that the federal government has destroyed our free markets, limited our freedoms, and denigrated our right to religious liberty - all before Obamacare has fully taken effect. The federal agencies continue to promulgate rules and regulations that drive up the cost of the most vital goods and services to the point that most of us will require government subsidies just to afford our most basic necessities, most notably, health insurance.
Yet, for many Capitol Hill conservatives who live in an exclusive world of budget-speak, we are on the cusp of restoring our Constitutional Republic. You see, the upcoming CR (H.R. 933) will fund discretionary spending for the remaining 6 months of Fiscal Year 2013 at the level of $974 billion [well, it's actually $982 billion, but it's close enough to the original RSC number for members to become all sentimental over it]. Isn't that awesome? Forget about focusing our message on things that actually penetrate the tin ear of the average voter, such as losing their healthcare under Obamacare. We're talking about our victory over "974."
Did you ever think that Republicans would rally around a cry of "974?" What does the number 974 mean to you? Not much. No wonder why Republicans have a terrible approval rating with the American public. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2. Sen. Graham Backs Radical Obama Judicial Appointment Caitlin Halligan, general counsel for Manhattan's district attorney's office, was nominated in 2010 to fill a vacancy on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, and has been re-nominated four times since then. A cloture vote to move forward with her nomination failed 54-45 in 2011. The presidential judicial appointments - by custom - should be taken under consideration by the Senate, but not this one. For starters, Halligan is a pro-abortion, anti-gun zealot, who just received the support of Sen. Lindsey Graham. As Paul Mirengoff of PowerLine wrote yesterday, Halligan would be more of an activist, than a judge. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
3. Morse's Bill Profiles African Americans While Claiming Gun Manufacturer Liability Bill Won't Lead To Profiling
After concerns were raised over the possibility that Sen. John Morse's (D-Colorado Springs) "Assault Weapon Responsibility Act" would force gun dealers to engage in profiling, Morse promptly denied the claim, despite precedent in the bill that would specifically profile and target African Americans. According to the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, "African-Americans have the highest rates of firearm death (including homicides, suicides and unintentional shooting deaths) among racial and ethnic groups in the U.S." Due to this fact, and that gun violence among African-Americans is more than twice that of whites, any seller who were to go through with the sale of an 'Assault Weapon' to an African-American would be in potential violation of the law. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
4. Circle The Wagons: The Left Goes Gunning For Texas
There are some Texans who may think that what happened in Colorado-and is currently happening in North Carolina and Virginia-cannot happen in Texas. That is, they do not believe that Texas can fall prey to an open-yet-quiet push by Left-wing groups like unions, Battleground Texas and others resulting in Texas ending up as a blue state in the next four to six years. Unfortunately, they are mistaken. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
5. Horsemen of the Obama Apocalypse: Famine leads by a nose
David Harsanyi's new book, Obama's Four Horsemen: The Disasters Unleashed by Obama's Reelection is out today. He posted a hefty excerpt over at Human Events, where he and I are two of the primary horsemen. Based on this, I think he wants to be Death, and I'll be War. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Much like Festivus, American diplomacy to the Middle East usually begins with an airing of grievances. These are not the American grievances over decades of terrorism and acts of violent hatred. These are the grievances that are supposedly infuriating the Arab Street. The list begins with Israel, continues on to the "Arab Dictators" supported by America and concludes with warnings to respect Mohammed by not making any cartoons or movies about him. During his first term, Obama kept his distance from Israel, locked up a Christian who made a movie about Mohammed and withdrew his support from the Arab Dictators. The street should have been happy, but now it's angrier than ever. And much of that anger is directed at America. Mohamed El Baradei, once the administration's choice to take over Egypt, has refused to meet with Secretary of State John Kerry. Joining him in this boycott is much of Egypt's liberal opposition. When Mubarak was in power, the "Arab Street" of Islamists and Egyptian leftists was angry at America for supporting him. Now the "Arab Street" of Egyptian leftists, Mubarak supporters and some Anti-Brotherhood Islamists is angry at America for supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. The American foreign policy error was to assume that the political grievances of the Arab Street could be appeased with democracy. They can't be. The various factions are not truly interested in open elections. What they want is for America to elevate their faction and only their faction to power. When that doesn't happen, they denounce the government as an American puppet and warn of the great and terrible anger of the Arab Street if America doesn't make them its puppet instead. Democracy is no solution, because none of the factions really wanted democracy for its own sake. They wanted it only as a tool to help them win. Now that the tool has failed most of them, they don't care for it anymore. And the Islamists who benefited from democracy have no enduring commitment to it. Like all the other factions, they see it as a tool. A means, not an end.

When gun confiscation begins, ALL politicians must be viewed as enemies of freedom until proven otherwise
Mar 04, 2013 05:13 am | Coach Collins
by Doug Book, staff writer
As the far left pass into law unconstitutional and unforgivable statutes by which to confiscate the firearms of the American people, a number of gun rights supporters believe the reclamation of our 2nd Amendment rights must depend upon the continued election of declared, pro-2nd Amendment Republicans.
Unfortunately, such is the rose-colored-glasses thinking of individuals either too foolish, too gullible or too cowardly to recognize the perpetual treachery of elected Republicans for what it truly is- a politician's perception of political necessity taking precedence over his duty to support the God given rights of the American people.
And never mind the argument that politicians who vote for gun confiscation will be in imminent danger of losing their jobs and therefore get what they deserve. That is irrelevant to the situation. For such politicians are traitors to the nation and to the American people. They are intent upon eliminating a God given, constitutionally codified ... "The Assassin at the door"
Lars Hedegaard is a Danish free-speech advocate who's been prosecuted by the government for his criticisms of Islam and who recently was the target of an assassination attempt. (See Hedgaard's recent Wall Street Journal op-ed below.) In Canada, Ezra Levant (scheduled to speak at our 2013 National Conference & Legislative Briefing) was the target of a government "human rights commission" for publishing the Danish cartoons. None of this could ever happen in America...could it? Tune in to the ACT! for America national free speech webcast on March 11th at 7:30 EST, using this link:

The Assassin at the Door
A Danish free-speech advocate on the day a gunman disguised as a postal worker tried to kill him.
By LARS HEDEGAARD
Copenhagen A police psychologist has told me that after an attempt on your life, things may appear somewhat fuzzy. After a while details of what happened may all of a sudden become clear as you remember more and more of this most distressing occurrence. That hasn't been my experience. What took place on Tuesday, Feb. 5, is as clear and vivid to me now as it was seconds after it happened. Shortly after 11 a.m., I was preparing to leave my apartment for the half-hour commute to my newspaper office in Malmo, Sweden, when the door-phone buzzed. The phone doesn't work properly-I can hear that I have visitors but not communicate with them. Nor can I buzz them in. I opened a window in my apartment to see who was down below at the front door. A man dressed in a red jacket with the logo of the Danish postal service was waiting at the door. He said he had a package for me. I answered that I couldn't buzz open the door and would instead come downstairs to get the package. I went down and opened the front door. The man repeated that he had a package, which he handed to me. As I held the package (which the police later determined was empty), he immediately pulled out a gun and fired at my head. Between my taking the package and the shot there was less than a second, so I had no inkling of what was going on. The distance between us must have been less than a yard. Nevertheless, he missed. He then proceeded to fumble with the gun in order to cock it for a second shot. I swung my right fist at his head, and my action confused him sufficiently for him to drop the gun. After a scuffle, he recovered the gun but couldn't make it fire. He then fled. Regrettably, he managed to run off with the gun. The police found a bullet hole in the wall and a cartridge. I judged my attacker to be around 25 years old and either an immigrant or a descendant of immigrants-most probably from an Arab country or possibly Pakistan. He spoke Danish with no accent. Since the attempted murder, I have been living under police protection and, as I am 70 years old, will most likely have to do so for the rest of my life. Despite intensive efforts-the Copenhagen police have set a special 20-man task force to deal with the case-no arrest has been made and consequently no motive can be established. However, everybody who has commented on the incident has assumed that the motive is political. Some people don't like what I have been saying or writing in recent years, and they want to silence me. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what may have spurred the gunman or those who may have sent him. For years I have been a campaigner for free speech-since 2004 as president of Denmark's Free Press Society. I have been an outspoken critic of Islamic supremacism and of attempts to impose Islamic Shariah law in Denmark and the West. Together with my Swedish colleague Ingrid Carlqvist, I have recently launched a Swedish-language weekly newspaper called Dispatch International-to the great dissatisfaction of the Swedish mainstream media, which are probably the most politically correct in the Western world and are in absolute agreement on every issue of any consequence. Dispatch International is critical of mass immigration to Sweden and Denmark from third-world countries and takes a dim view of Islam. As a consequence, we have been reviled as "racist." We are not. We simply insist on our right to defend freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and individual and sexual equality. We also insist on our right to criticize religious fanatics of every stripe who try to impose theocratic laws and customs on free societies. When I was a young Marxist during the 1960s and '70s, these opinions used to be described as characteristic of the political left. Nowadays the defenders of such positions are routinely labeled as right-wing or as belonging to the "extreme right." Meanwhile, what used to be the left is cozying up to holy men who want adulterous women to be stoned, homosexuals to be hanged, apostates from Islam to be killed, and 1,200-year-old laws emanating from somewhere in the Arabian desert to replace our free constitutions. In my home country of Denmark, the reaction to the failed murder has mainly been one of horror. Nearly all leading politicians and media have condemned it. To be sure, some newspapers have availed themselves of this opportunity to emphasize what a despicable racist I am, but at least they express their satisfaction that I'm not dead. Not so in Sweden, where I work most of the time. The Swedish media have either hinted that I have invented the incident in order to set myself up as a martyr-which would have required a major conspiracy involving the Danish police and Security Service-or they seem disappointed that my delivery man was not a better marksman. What's next? Unfortunately, the attempt on my life is one in a wave of political assassinations or attempted assassinations that has swept Europe since Ayatollah Khomeini issued his so-called fatwa against Salman Rushdie in 1989. Some have been killed-among them the Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn and Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh. Others, like writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali, have been forced to flee Europe or go into hiding. I am determined not to be silenced, come what may. I refuse to live in a world ruled by the gun.
Mr. Hedegaard, a journalist and historian, is the founder of the International Free Press Society and editor in chief of Dispatch International.

CPAC already has earned headlines for narrowing the conservative tent this year. Now, after not inviting Chris Christie to speak, and declining to allow GoProud to participate, CPAC is refusing to allow Pamela Geller to have a booth or rent rooms to conduct events. From her own site, Atlas Shrugs, Pamela writes:
the Grover Norquist/Suhail Khan cabal refuse to address (jihad, sharia, the war on freedom in the West).
This year, I applied to speak and was ignored. I tried to get a room for an AFDI event, "The War on Free Speech," and was ignored. So, for the first time in five years, I won't be at CPAC. Last year Suhail Khan bragged out loud that he (and his other operatives) had successfully kept Robert Spencer and me from being invited to speak. He went so far as to warn people not to attend our events or read our books.
In several articles I took on Grover Norquist and his powerful influence over CPAC, most notably here and here. As soon as I published my Newsmax column concerning his perfidious influence at CPAC, my Newsmax column was taken down and my name and picture were removed from the Newsmax page..... it was two slots away from Grover's. My weekly column never appeared at Newsmax again. It was axed.
Now this. I might add, every AFDI event at CPAC was standing room only. We turned people away every year.
Here is an independent account of Pamela's CPAC event last year:
I remember in 2011, I was hanging out with Tania Gail and all of sudden she jumps up and says, "Oh my gosh, we've got to get over to Pamela Geller's screening of "The Ground Zero Mosque: The Second Wave of the 9/11 Attacks." We then ran over to the other side of the conference center to find a jam-packed hall just sitting down to the movie screening. It was awesome. And then the next day, Pamela held a standing room event for the families of 9/11: "THE GROUND ZERO MOSQUE EVENT AT CPAC." These events were the freakin' pinnacle of the conference. Sheesh. What is wrong with this world? Now Pamela's banned? Unbe-freakin'-lievable.
Breitbart News adds:
For the last four years, Pamela Geller of AtlasShrugs.com and the American Freedom Defense Initiative have held events at CPAC featuring guests she invites to discuss the influence of Islamism on America. But this year, the American Conservative Union (ACU) has no room for Geller or her message.

News from The Hill:
House government funding bill includes $10.4B to soften defense sequester By Erik Wasson
The House Appropriations Committee on Monday formally introduced a giant spending bill to keep the government funded and prevent a shutdown.
The $982 billion bill would fund the government through the end of fiscal year 2013 on Sept. 30 and prevent a government shutdown after March 27, when a current temporary spending bill runs out. It assumes that the $85 billion in sequestration cuts that went into effect on March 1 stay in place.
The bill includes detailed appropriations for the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments and to fund military construction, and shifts $10.4 billion into the Pentagon's operations and maintenance account to soften the blow of the automatic cuts.

Obama's job approval number tumbles
Posted: 04 Mar 2013 03:26 PM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
Is it because folks remembered President Obama's promise during one of the debates that there will be no sequester? Is it because wrod got out that the sequester was Obama's idea? Is it because folks don't mind the sequester and resent Obama's effort to make it sound like the end of the world? Is it because the flap with Bob Woodward was more storm than drizzle? Or is it just random?
Beats me. But Obama's job approval has fallen to its lowest level in the Gallup three-day average since his reelection. Between February 29 and March, his approval rating stood at 46 percent, down from 53 percent a week earlier.
The President's disapproval rating also jumped to its highest level since November. It hit 46 percent over the weekend, up from 40 percent a week earlier.

Chronicles: From Ineptitude to Absurdity
Posted: 04 Mar 2013 12:51 PM PST
(Steven Hayward)
And then there are the stories you read that go beyond our usual category of mere ineptitude. Such as the Tabernacle Baptist Church in St. Louis that wants to fight gun violence by holding . . . a toy gun buyback. Just a hunch here: I'll bet they don't sing "Onward Christian Soldiers" in that congregation.
The New York Times announced quietly on Friday afternoon at 5 pm (let's see. . . why that late time on a Friday I wonder?) to announce that it was shutting down its Green blog. They had already disbanded its environment desk back in early January, and in this decision, like the previous one, they channeled Spinal Tap's Ian Faith in declaring that this didn't mean a lessening commitment to the topic-oh, no, we're just becoming more selective. I mean, see if this doesn't sound as lame as the satirical Mr. Faith:
This change will allow us to direct production resources to other online projects. But we will forge ahead with our aggressive reporting on environmental and energy topics, including climate change, land use, threatened ecosystems, government policy, the fossil fuel industries, the growing renewables sector and consumer choices.
Because shutting down your environment desk and your Green blog is what you do when you're promising aggressive reporting on the topic. This doesn't even deserve a Green Weenie honorable mention.

Gay marriage and the Supreme Court's empire
Posted: 04 Mar 2013 10:14 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
This month, the Supreme Court will hear argument in Hollingsworth v. Perry, which presents the issue of whether the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment prohibits the State of California from defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman. I wrote here about the Obama administration's brief arguing that California's definition is unconstitutional. And I will probably have more to say about the case as it proceeds.
But before getting into the weeds, we should step back in awe of the fact that the Supreme Court will likely decide the issue stated above. Assuming that threshold issues such as standing don't prevent a ruling on the merits, nine glorified lawyers are about to tell us whether the traditional definition of marriage as requiring members of the opposite sex is rational and/or useful (whether the standard is "rationality" or "utility" is up for grabs in the case). By "traditional definition of marriage" in this context, I really mean the universal definition - one that, as far as I know, prevailed until very recently in all societies since the beginning of recorded time.
Isn't it odd that as few as five judges could determine that the traditional definition of this fundamental institution is irrational (or not useful), and make this judgment stick? All conservatives, in the traditional sense of that world view, should be appalled.
It's natural that judges would like to have the power to declare traditional marriage irrational. Many of us aspire to be the measure of all things. And it's natural that lawyers as a group are on board. Law school can be grueling; finding a job afterwards has become daunting; and job satisfaction among lawyers often falls short of expectations. To be part of a profession that gets to litigate and pass on the very biggest issues provides some consolation.
The surprising thing is that the public accepts the immense power grab that Hollingsworth v. Perry exemplifies. They do so in part because jurists from John Marshall to John Roberts have exercised their power with an eye on public perceptions. By acting "modestly," or at least with false modesty, they have tried to maintain the good will necessary to maintain legitimacy in the eyes of the other branches and the public as a whole. Cloaked with that legitimacy, they (or their "brethren") can act with flagrant immodesty when the occasion arises.
This is another way of saying that the law's empire has mushroomed because lawyers are cleverer than non-lawyers. Unfortunately, they are not wiser. And they certainly aren't wise enough to tell us authoritatively whether the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman is rational/useful.
Some will say that by adopting the Fourteenth Amendment, the body politic put courts in the position where they one day would have to pass on the constitutionality of the traditional definition of marriage. That, of course, is how things have worked out.
But those involved in enacting the Fourteenth Amendment would be astounded that it has led to this. In spite of decades of indoctrination and conditioning, I'm surprised, myself.
STEVE adds: There's actually something of a split among gay marriage advocates over this case that the media, naturally, is either ignoring or isn't even aware of. Jonathan Rauch is one gay marriage proponent who thinks it is a big mistake, and he told me he tried to talk Californians out of bringing the suit to federal court. Through a long chain of odd circumstances back in January I happened to meet and have a long conversation with one of the leading gay marriage activists in the nation, and he surprised me by saying he recognized the potential political disaster of achieving gay marriage by "our equivalent of Roe." The problem, of course, is that too many on the Left have gotten used to getting what they want from judges instead of democratic persuasion.

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 09:29 AM PST
(Scott Johnson)
Growing up in Moorhead, Minnesota, before my family moved to St. Paul in 1958, may be the happiest I've been, to borrow the title of a memorable John Updike short story. My dad managed Moorhead's Comstock Hotel (destroyed by fire in 1960) and established its all-you-can-eat for $0.50 buffet, still remembered fondly by some Fargo-Moorhead natives. There is a reason why Jeffrey Hart titled his revisionist history of the fifties When the Going Was Good!
I was particularly happy attending kindergarten for a couple of years at what was then Moorhead State Teachers College. Times have changed and Moorhead State Teachers College has grown up to become Minnesota State University at Moorhead (MSUM). It's a full-fledged public university.
Last week MSUM's College of Education and Human Services hosted Bill Ayers on campus as a visiting scholar. The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead (formerly the Fargo Forum, I believe) previewed Ayers's appearance:
MSUM professor Steve Grineski said he's known Ayers for several years. When faculty members were thinking about how to more deeply include social justice in their courses, he said he suggested they bring Ayers here.
"One of the reasons we asked him to come to campus is that certainly he's one of the country's greatest minds when it comes to teaching for democracy and trying to make not only schools and universities, but our whole society socially just," he said. "We're really fortunate to have him because certainly he's made a lifetime of contributions to students and teachers and faculty, and even on a larger scale than that."
Ayers will serve as the 2013 College of Education and Human Services visiting scholar, a role Grineski said the college fills almost every year by bringing in a well-established scholar to visit the campus and deliver a public address. Ayers also will meet with several classes and discuss curriculum with faculty today and Wednesday.
The Forum adds via Professor Grineski that this was Ayers's third appearance on campus. I called up Professor Grineski to ask about Ayers's appointment as a visiting scholar. He explained that Ayers had not simply appeared to give the lecture publicized in the Forum article, but had stuck around for a few days to consult on the development of a "social justice" curriculum in their teachers' education program. Insert groans here.
I also asked Professor Grineski whether he thought it was appropriate to confer the honor on someone who could fairly be described as an unrepentant terrorist. Professor Grineski quarreled with the premise of my question. He did not think Ayers could fairly be described in that manner. He said that Ayers was one of many who had contributed to the ending of the Vietnam War. Some did it by protesting, some did it by singing songs, and some did it by blowing up buildings. Ayers fell into the latter category, although it wouldn't have been Professor Grineski's choice. For the purposes of clarification, Professor Grineski added: "I didn't blow up any buildings."
Even so, things have gone substantially downhill at MSUM since the era when the going was good.
Via Aleister G./College Insurrection and Paul Bedard/Examiner.
UPDATE: A reader writes from suburban St. Paul right on schedule: "Wow, did you take me back when you mentioned that your father managed the Comstock Hotel in Moorhead. When I was a kid growing up in Fargo, it was a BIG DEAL when my folks would take us kids, usually on Sunday after church, across the river to the Comstock buffet. Pretty happy times for this child of the Fifties as well. My thanks to your dad."

The time has passed to arm Syrian rebels
Posted: 04 Mar 2013 08:44 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
Last week, in a speech at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Marco Rubio called for the United States to provide ammunition to the Syrian opposition. And nearly every week, it seems, John McCain argues that the U.S. should supply arms to that opposition.
But Michael Rubin argues, persuasively I think, that the time has passed to take such action because the Syrian opposition is now dominated by radical forces hostile to the U.S. and to freedom:
Much has already been written about the Nusra Front, a group supported by both Turkey and Saudi Arabia and which the United States considers an Al Qaeda affiliate and has designated a terrorist group. . . .[T]he Nusra Front now appears to be recruiting the most militant Islamists out there; being Syrian or fighting for Syrian freedom has nothing to do with their struggle. The opposition has radicalized, and the most responsible, moderate, and nationalist elements have been purged. Should Bashar al-Assad fall tomorrow, Syria will not be a democracy: At best there would be an ongoing civil war, and at worst the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists who have taken root inside Syria will consolidate their control.
What, then, should the U.S. do? It should protect U.S. interests:
The United States should prepare to use its airpower to neutralize any group which threatens U.S. national security. It must have contingencies to seize and destroy chemical munitions-no easy feat, as it took weeks to accomplish that task in Libya in 2003, and that was with Libyan government cooperation.
Rubin believes, and he may well be right, that at an earlier point in the Syrian civil war the U.S. should have thrown its weight behind certain rebel forces. But President Obama let that moment slip away:
At present, President Obama's reticence is correct, but only because his incompetence on the Syria issue has created a self-fulfilling prophecy, one which U.S. administrations will be dealing with for decades to come.

Monday, March 4, 2013 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer Obama Focused On Winning, Not Governing We've been saying it for months, but it is worth saying again. Obama won reelection last November but he never stopped campaigning. In Friday's press conference, Obama revealed what drives his decision making -- he wants to destroy his opponents in Congress. Here is what he said: "What I can't do is force Congress to do the right thing. The American people may have the capacity to do that." In other words, Obama is looking to the next election for the voters to give him a Congress that will pass his radical big government agenda. Over the weekend, the Washington Post published a detailed story about Obama's aggressive political agenda and his goal of having both the House and the Senate after next year's congressional election. Don't be fooled by Obama's rhetoric or the media's spin. Everything this White House does is aimed at putting Nancy Pelosi back in the speaker's chair. Solving the country's problems just isn't a priority. Our hope is that conservatives will repeat 2010 and take back the Senate. It would be a mistake for Republicans to think for one second that Obama's interest is good public policy. His real desire is to be able to run the country without any impediments. The last time the left had that kind of power, Obama rammed through Obamacare. If it happens again I believe the freedom of religion, Second Amendment rights and our future economic growth would all be in graver danger than they are in now. Obama's Sequester Scare Tactics The sequester is a perfect example of Obama's obsession with politics. The sequester was his idea, but he denied it. Stuck with it now, Obama's apparent goal is to make the 2.5% cut as painful as possible in the hope that the public will punish Republicans in 2014 for making "draconian" cuts to key public services. So Obama led his cabinet officials in making false statements about the sequester in a series of campaign rallies designed to scare the public into going along with his big government, tax and spend agenda. In his press conference Friday, Obama implied that Republicans were more interested in protecting "tax loopholes for the well-off and well-connected," than in preventing hard-working Americans from getting hurt by the sequester. Here's what Obama said about Capitol Hill janitors: "Starting tomorrow, everybody here, all the folks who are cleaning the floors at the Capitol -- now that Congress has left, somebody is going to be vacuuming and cleaning those floors and throwing out the garbage -- they're going to have less pay. The janitors, the security guards, they just got a pay cut, and they've got to figure out how to manage that." Obama's chutzpah is amazing! It was Barack Obama who caused their salaries to go down when he reinstated the payroll tax after cutting it for the past two years. And Obama's claim that the sequester has cut their pay is false. Obama's alarmist claims had Capitol Hill officials scrambling. Numerous emails were sent throughout the day reassuring nervous workers that their paychecks would not change. The Washington Post's fact checker gave Obama "Four Pinocchios" -- it's worst rating -- for this whopper, concluding, "nothing in Obama's statement came close to being correct." Is The Public Catching On? The latest Gallup tracking poll finds that the public is evenly split on Obama's job approval -- 46% approve and 46% disapprove. But at the beginning of last week, 51% approved of the president's job performance and 43% disapproved. That represents an 8-point swing in a very short period of time. The daily countdown to the sequester dominated the headlines last week. It appears as though Obama has taken a hit as he ratcheted up the scare tactics on sequestration and tried to convince the public that it was impossible for the federal government to take a 2.5% cut after years of massive spending increases. Protecting Israel's "Back" Early last week I went up to Capitol Hill and met with Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) at his request. Senator Graham was reaching out to pro-Israel leaders to seek support for a strong, bi-partisan resolution he has introduced in the Senate to pressure the Obama Administration to be more aggressive in confronting Iran's nuclear weapons program. The resolution does not have the force of law, but it sends a clear signal to our enemies and to Israel's enemies. One year ago today, President Obama said during a speech to the annual AIPAC conference, "So there should not be a shred of doubt by now: when the chips are down, I have Israel's back." To most people that statement means that Obama will stand with Israel in a fight. But the Obama White House has shown far more interest in reaching out to Iran than in protecting Israel's back. Just last week, Secretary of State John Kerry was talking about renewed dialogue with Iran. He also said, "Iran is a country with a government that was elected and that sits in the United Nations." Most Americans will remember that Iran's last election was marred by rampant fraud. The results were highly suspect, leading to rioting and a brutal crackdown by the Islamist regime against pro-democracy advocates. While we can debate President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's legitimacy, what is not debatable is that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is calling the shots, and he wasn't elected by anybody.

Conservatives Pushing Boehner, Cantor to Defund Obamacare in Continuing Resolution |
|
by Matthew Boyle
Conservative House Republicans are circulating a letter calling on House Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to defund Obamacare in the upcoming continuing resolution that funds the government. Oklahoma Republican Rep. Jim Bridenstine, a freshman, and Kansas Republican Rep. Tim Huelskamp are leading the charge.
"The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ('ObamaCare') remains broadly unpopular across America," the letter to Boehner and Cantor reads. "More and more Americans are now feeling its impact--from job losses and part-time downgrades, to insurance policy changes and violations of religious liberties, to state budget strains from Medicaid expansions. And Americans don't like these impacts. Most Americans still believe that healthcare should be controlled by patients and doctors, not by the government."

NEW ON PJ MEDIA |
Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama is the best we've got, and he's plenty good. In fact, his words on the Senate floor when he implored his colleagues to reject the nomination of Jack Lew for Treasury secretary are as good as it gets. It's been a long time since I've heard anything as elegant, compelling, honorable, and philosophically coherent as Sessions' speech on the 27th of February.
Seth MacFarlane's humor at the Oscars did one of the very things that good humor is supposed to do. It told the truth about an accepted practice that is morally absurd. As right wingers dedicated to moral truth, we should have used the moment to pleasantly and sweetly drive the point home. But when it comes to pop culture, we're just too stupid. | | TOP STORIES ON PJ MEDIA |

Monday Brief
Remembering Breitbart
March 4, 2013
The Foundation
"The right of freely examining public characters and measures, and of free communication among the people thereon ... has ever been justly deemed the only effectual guardian of every other right." --James Madison
Inspiration
 | Andrew Breitbart (1969-2012) |
Editor's Note: Friday marked the one-year anniversary of Andrew Breitbart's death. He never feared to ask the tough questions and seek the accountability in politics that so few "journalists" today pursue. May his legacy be remembered and inspire others to defend Liberty.
"Andrew Breitbart's quest for the truth served as an inspiration to people around the globe. It had a profound impact on both of us as well. Andrew not only served as fellow warrior in the trenches of journalism, but he also made an impact on our lives and both of the organizations where we work. ... [W]e are excited to announce the Franklin Center and Heritage Foundation will once again sponsor this year's Breitbart Awards. In the months following Andrew's death last year, Franklin and Heritage teamed up for a summit on the future of media. ... Today, as we mourn the loss of Andrew and pay tribute to his accomplishments, we're calling on you help ensure his legacy lives. Please take a moment to visit BreitbartAwards.com to nominate someone whose efforts advance the spirit of Andrew Breitbart's work. We're accepting nominations for individuals who are driven by an indomitable pursuit for truth and accountability, and whose work has broken meaningful ground in advancing those causes on behalf of the public good. ... As you think about who best to nominate, consider these questions: Who has the courage and honesty to tell the real stories that matter to people's lives? When the legacy media fails to do its job, who among the army of bloggers stands out when holding the institutions of power accountable? Who is the citizen activist who uses information to dig up the truth and serve as a watchdog in your community? Andrew was incredibly kind, devoted to his family and work, and most importantly, enthusiastic about life. He cherished freedom and liberty. And his work had a profound impact on American politics, media and culture. Help us keep his legacy alive." --Heritage Foundation's Rob Bluey and Erik Telford

Indiana Among States Acting to Oppose Common Core Standards
By Rachel Sheffield
States are reconsidering their support for the Common Core standards. In recent weeks, legislators in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, and South Dakota have attempted to pedal back their state's involvement with the standards. Noted The Washington Post: "[T]he [Common Core] standards are meeting with growing resistance for reasons including questions about who was behind the initiative and whether they are better than previous standards." Last week, Indiana's state senate passed legislation sponsored by state senator Scott Schneider (R). Originally intended to pull Indiana out of the Common Core standards completely, "now, it halts implementation until the state Board of Education conducts public hearings in each of the state's nine congressional districts." In addition, Schneider's proposal "requires the state to conduct an in-depth cost analysis of moving to the national standards" as well as "to put parents on the state's academic standards committee."

States have more non-teaching staff than teachers, according to a new study by the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice. "States could do much more constructive things with those kinds of dollars," says Robert Enlow, president and CEO of the foundation said. "State leaders could be permitting salary increases for great teachers, offering children in failing schools the option of attending a private school, or directing savings toward other worthy purposes."
