Radiation leaking from Iran's nuke plant
Islamic regime fears poisonous clouds could hit cities
by Reza KahliliRadiation is leaking from Iran's nuclear facility at Fordow, which suffered devastating explosions on Jan. 21, WND has learned, and the regime has ordered millions of antidote iodine pills from Russia and Ukraine amid fears the radioactivity will spread. Many of the personnel, who arrived after the explosion to assist with the cleanup at the site, have been taken to a military hospital suffering from headache, nausea and vomiting, according to a source in the security forces protecting Fordow. A special team of nuclear experts was ordered to the site days ago, the source said, and detected high levels of radiation.

This must be Barack Obama's way of thanking our veterans for serving.
US veterans are receiving letters from the government informing them that they are disabled and not allowed to own, purchase or possess a firearm. If the veteran does decide to purchase a firearm he will by fined, imprisoned or both.
This comes on page 2 of the VA letter.
Constitutional Attorney Michael Connelly, J.D. reported this at Red Flag News.
How would you feel if you received a letter from the U.S. Government informing you that because of a physical or mental condition that the government says you have it is proposing to rule that you are incompetent to handle your own financial affairs? Suppose that letter also stated that the government is going to appoint a stranger to handle your affairs for you at your expense? That would certainly be scary enough but it gets worse. What if that letter also stated: "A determination of incompetency will prohibit you from purchasing, possessing, receiving, or transporting a firearm or ammunition. If you knowingly violate any of these prohibitions, you may be fined, imprisoned, or both pursuant to the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, Pub.L.No. 103-159, as implemented at 18, United States Code 924(a)(2)."? That makes is sound like something right from a documentary on a tyrannical dictatorship somewhere in the world. Yet, as I write this I have a copy of such a letter right in front of me.

Throughout the history of the Boy Scouts of America, character and courage have been two traits that could be counted on by the venerable organization. Pressed from any side, the Boy Scouts have kept their moral compass aligned as well as they have their magnetic ones. Recently, however, some within the organization have indicated that they are willing to abandon these values to advance a political agenda.
Protected by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2000, the Scouts completed an in-depth study and reiterated last year the wisdom of keeping their longstanding policy on homosexual Scout leaders and members. The study found that scouting parents overwhelmingly want the organization to respect their right to discuss these sexual topics with their children - and not bring this contentious issue into Scouting.
Even with this strong footing, some among the BSA board of directors -- pressured by corporate elites and homosexual activists - are seeking to turn the organization into a laboratory for social experimentation.
The board's move to reverse tradition and abandon the policy on homosexuality within Scouting was stalled due to a public outcry from hundreds of thousands of Americans like you. Many parents asked the board, "Why should we change what has been taught to these boys for the last 103 years?" Unwilling to make a principled stand, the BSA board decided in February to put the decision to a vote of approximately 1400 National Council members in late May.
This is where you can help. Please join us in signing our petition, which we will deliver to each of the roughly 290 Scout Councils across the nation.
These Councils represent the heart of Scouting, and are people who will be most impacted by an abandonment of the BSA policy on homosexuality. These faithful workers need to know that the communities of America will stand with them.

This rally is to show public support for the 2nd Amendment, oppose the current gun control agenda in Washington, and promote common sense solutions such as repeal of gun free school zones and providing armed security in our schools.
The rally will be at the corner of Court and Main Street in Doylestown. We have notified Doylestown officials of the rally will meet at that corner and the small brick meeting area. We will spread out along the sidewalk - do not obstruct pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

When I called his Washington office last week to ask if the congressmen has taken a stand on gun control, I was told by an office staffer that Congressmen Fitzpatrick believes "no private citizen should own any military-style weapons."

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
| |
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
- Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
- Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

Important Dates:
- February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
- February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
- March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
- April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.

There is a proposed bike trail in several different areas of Chester County costing a wopping 45 million dollars for the project. Whether you live in these areas or not, we need everyone to attend this and speak up. As you know, our county taxes have gone up this year and with this proposed plan, I am sure they will be going up even higher. Question: How many miles of trails and pedestrian walkways do we already have and what is the utilization? Where is the money going to come from to pay for these new trails? Who is pushing for this and why? You may think that your voice does not count. Word of encouragement. It does. Last night, there was a meeting in Oxford boro where the boro was pushing through some gun restrictions (magazines, etc). A group of concerned citizens (between 100 - 200 people) spoke up and the motion was not passed. I believe in order to fight what is going on, we need to come out in masses. Also, another encouraging word, a smartmeter man came up to one of our fellow patriots to install a smart meter. Fortunately the person was home and explained to him why he did not want a smart meter (equipment he had in his house would be affected). After talking with the gentlemen installing the smart meter, and him taking notes, the man left without installing the smart meter. Now I am sure this is not the end of it, but everyone can make a difference. Pass this email on to everyone you know and please I urge you to attend this meeting. There are two people running for Prothonotary this May. Pat Bachtle a long time incumbent and a newcomer Diane Christian. On paper this looks ok, but when you take a closer look, more questions than answers arise.
The Tea Party should be happy to see a newcomer on the ticket. Right?
We should be happy to see the incumbent challenged by a newcomer. Right? Except this newcomer was hand selected by Bucks County GOP Chairwoman Pat Poprik.
Do you remember the countless "newcomers" who have tried to run for office in the past few years? They were handily dismissed by the party leadership and told that positions only go to those who have worked hard for the party over several years. Pat Bachtle is the incumbent Prothonotary and has worked for the party for many years. Now Pat Poprik is embracing a newcomer that she has hand selected with no prior experience or record. There is clearly a double standard.
One does not have to think too hard to figure out what the reaction would be to an unknown Tea Party candidate running against an established incumbent. Remember when the GOP called the Constables to intervene against non-endorsed GOP candidates in 2010?
Why is the party chair deciding to pick this fight when Bucks County is becoming more liberal? This has the potential to leave the seat wide open for a Democrat grab. Bucks County GOP money should not be spent in a primary for a Prothonotary seat. This is foolish and wasteful use of resources.
We at The Kitchen Table Patriots
are calling for an Unendorsed Primary. Let the best candidate win. The registered Republicans of Bucks County should decide on primary election day who should be the next Prothonotary on the Republican ticket. Not a small group of GOP County Executives, half of which were appointed by the Chair of the Party. It doesn't seem like a fair process does it.
If you are a registered Republican and live in Bucks County Pennsylvania we are urging you to contact your local committee person and ask them to vote for no endorsement. If you do not know who you committee person is than call the Bucks County Republican Headquarters at 215-345-8811

Also We urge you to clear your calendar and attend the Bucks County GOP executive committee meeting on Thursday March 7 at PM. at the Republican Headquarters in Doylestown. The is the night that the executive committee, half of which were hand picked by the county chair will endorse. Come and speak your mind to your elected Executive. Let the Republican party know you are watching and paying attention.

 Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
- You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
- I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems.

I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.

1. Virginia's Governor Bob McDonnell Thinks You're an Idiot
On Friday, March 15, 2013, at 8:00 a.m. Bob McDonnell will go to CPAC and address the Faith & Freedom Coalition Prayer Breakfast. For those of you who attend this event, you will be sitting staring at a liar.
If you are a conservative, remember Bob McDonnell thinks you're an idiot.
That's the only explanation I can think of for what just happened in Virginia this week. That, and that McDonnell is an unprincipled fake conservative whose promises are without value, an exemplar of the kind of big government pro-tax Republican who ruined the party's stature with fiscal conservatives.
Bob McDonnell promised when he ran for governor that he'd never raise taxes. He talks a good game to conservative audiences, about principled leadership and the like. He can pretend he's one of you. He's got great hair. He'll speak at the Faith & Freedom Coalition Prayer Breakfast at CPAC as if he is one of us.
But when push comes to shove, when the time comes that being a conservative demands that you stand up for what's right and reject the easy way out, Bob McDonnell is not going to stand on principle. He's going to cave to what the media calls "leadership" which is really just big government liberalism.
Bob McDonnell was getting all kinds of praise on the Sunday shows for his big transportation tax hike, which passed the Virginia legislature this week. He was getting praise from big government liberals like Tim Kaine and Terry McAuliffe and Martin O'Malley for his evenhandedness, his leadership, not like those troublesome conservatives in Washington who refuse to wheel and deal.
2. Just the Fracks, Ma'am
Natural gas is a cheap, abundant American resource, and cleaner than all of its viable alternatives to boot. It would be hard for a reasonable person not to favor natural gas as a component of our national energy mix, but then anti-frackers like Josh Fox, Yoko Ono and their ilk put little value on being reasonable people. They are the neo-Luddites resisting a modern energy revolution, standing between the people and the prosperity promised by affordable domestic energy.
We've considered Fox and his irrational fear-mongering before. His Gasland cartoon (above) clearly suggests that the well-stimulation process known as fracking can directly contaminate ground water since the induced fractures in the horizontal section of a gas well propagate into water-bearing aquifers. The scenario Fox depicts is categorically impossible. The fracturing process is applied to wells 5,000 feet and more below ground level. Fresh water is usually at 1,000 feet or less. A fracture induced at depth tends to grow vertically, but at shallower depths, the preferred direction of growth would be horizontal, parallel to the surface. In 2014, if conservatives can drum up a primary against Mitch McConnell of value, the conservative movement will finally have the brush fire of liberty it needs to burn up the under brush of the movement. Add Mario Loyola to the list of Republicans first, conservative second with this entry.
I'm really trying to keep the sexual slang and innuendo to a minimum in describing what he does here to Mitch McConnell. I realize most of you have never heard of Mario Loyola, but when we set up our wikipedia of those within the conservative movement who've done us harm, he'll be on the list with ACU.

Here's some good news: Demetrius Murphy, one of the original members of a gang of Black teenagers who roam the streets of St. Louis attacking people as they "play" the Knockout Game, is dead. He was shot and killed recently while preparing to break into the wrong home and met someone who was armed and not afraid to defend himself. It happened that the home owner is White and Murphy was Black. In ordinary times this shouldn't mean anything, but in this case it does. General McKiernan's firing was put down to the need for fresh ideas. McKiernan was deemed too "old school" because he wanted to fight an old-fashioned war against the Taliban while Obama Inc. believed that the war couldn't be won by beating the Taliban, but by winning the hearts and minds of Afghans. It was a fashionable and doomed strategy that required sacrificing the lives and limbs of thousands of American soldiers to political correctness.
The old-school general who had once said, "I don't understand ever putting your men and women in harm's way, without their having the full ability to protect themselves. That also means operating on actionable intelligence to defeat insurgents, and protect your forces. That's how you keep your soldiers alive," was clearly not the man for that job. Need for Muslim Social Media task force
As for those who think may have realize by now the power of social media, especially in recent days when mainstream electronic media boycotted the carnage of Rohingya Muslims. Experts are saying that the days of Electronic and print media are numbered, very soon social media will take over and it will play a vital role in shaping public opinion.

Rand Corporation a think tank that works for Pentagon released a report a while ago suggesting that US should invest 20 billion dollars in coming years to drive the public opinion in it's favor especially in war zones like in Afghanistan, Iraq and anywhere else where the anti western sentiments are high.
The need now for the Muslim community is to take heed and realize the urgent need to establish Muslim Social media task force which will monitor internet and counter the negative and anti Islam and Anti Muslim narratives instantly and in an efficient manner,
One lesson to be derived in this regard is the strategy adopted by Israeli government, it is training Jewish students from around the world and training them in Journalism and media monitoring.

I have few suggestions to make in this regard.

An association of Muslim Youth should be created, they be trained in media monitoring and response and in media relations (See above link of Jewish organization for further details)
These Youth should be encouraged to be passionate, aggressive and prompt in their responses.
There need at least one such team in every country (I know it's a daunting taks, but one small steps takes us to bigger one)
They should coordinate with other Muslim youth operating in different countries.
Report anti Islamic and anti Muslim content on the internet to appropriate authorities to take action to remove it and go after those who post it online and prosecute and take actions according to the Shariah ruling.
Highlight the inconsistencies of the mainstream media and spread it across the web using social networking and all other platforms available to us.
Highlight the bias of media in reporting issues pertaining to Islam and Muslims
Write to editors and journalist reporting on Islam and on Muslim issues (Believe it does have an impact)
Send mass emails out promptly urging Muslims to respond on news reports that is bias and anti Islamic in nature to the editors and journalist and TV anchors.
Promote books, documentaries, movies that is of beneficial to the Muslim youth.

Sequester Armageddon?
To hear the breathless media reports you would think that we are on the verge of an economic collapse, not because of our runaway debt but because of spending cuts ranging from $22 to $85 billion (the sequester) scheduled to be implemented on March 1st. The budget this year is $3.7 trillion, which is the same as $3,700 billion, and we are being told that not spending 1/43 (on the high end) of that $3,700 billion will destroy us!
Rush Limbaugh was right yesterday when he said this about the crisis:
"What's happening here, folks, is we are being played for fools and being suckered -- suckered into supporting the never-ending expansion of government, the wholesale destruction of the private economy. Everybody who joins in this debate under the premise that Obama puts forth, as well as debating the politics of this nonsense, is just being used to cover up what's actually going on. Now, what's going on is no great conspiracy. It's no mystery. We're spending much more money than we have.
"The government is getting inexorably larger.
"It's less and less efficient at accomplishing anything. We're creating more and more dependents. We're robbing people of their dignity and humanity and of their opportunity to realize their dreams as they turn their lives over to the government. It's like a never-ending cycle. The government makes the private sector smaller. There are fewer job opportunities. There's less money in the private sector, less opportunity to accrue wealth. Income taxes and others threaten to go higher; they do go higher.
"It all adds up to the government growing, the private sector shrinking, freedom being lost ever so slowly, and nobody ever talks about stopping this."
Well said, Rush.
NBC Mocks Christ
If you haven't already heard, the NBC comedy show "Saturday Night Live" ran a disgusting segment last week mocking Jesus Christ. Intended as a parody of the movie "Django Unchained," the skit was entitled "Djesus Uncrossed." If you are even remotely familiar with movie director Quentin Tarantino's work, you can only imagine what happened next -- "DJesus" goes on a bloody rampage seeking revenge against those who crucified him.
"Saturday Night Live" chose to run this skit just as the Lenten season was beginning -- a time of reflection when Christians consider the incredible sacrifice of the Cross, culminating in the celebration of the resurrection. While it would be far more historically accurate, there is no way NBC would tolerate a similar skit about Muhammad. But our liberal media elites don't think twice about mocking Christians.

Sending Your Tax Dollars To China
One of the great outrages about Obama's failed stimulus bill is that some of your hard-earned tax dollars were wasted creating jobs in China when the whole point was to create jobs in America. To add insult to injury, the redistribution of wealth is still going on.
In December, the battery maker A123 was sold to a Chinese company for $257 million. A123 was the recipient of $249 million of stimulus money -- your tax dollars -- as part of Obama's green energy push to make batteries for electric cars. Now the Chinese own it.
And speaking of electric cars, do you remember Fisker? In 2009, Fisker Automotive received a $529 million loan from the federal government in exchange for the promise of creating so-called "green jobs" by producing electric cars at a shuttered GM plant in Delaware. In 2011, Fisker announced plans to open a plant in Finland.
But like so many of Obama's failed green "investments," Fisker too has gone under. It seems there just wasn't much of a market for $103,000 electric cars. Now a Chinese company, Dongfeng Motor Corporation, is bidding to buy Fisker for $350 million. Fisker reportedly still owes $200 million to the American taxpayers.
Thankfully, Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA) and John Thune (R-SD) are speaking up and objecting to the sale. Senator Grassley told Bloomberg News, "Technology developed with American taxpayer subsidies should not be sold off to China." Senator Thune said, "Obama's green energy investments appear to be nothing more than venture capital for eventual Chinese acquisitions."
Defending Religious Freedom
Kudos to Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ). Rep. Franks is the Co-Chairman of the International Religious Freedom Caucus. He recently authored a letter signed by more than 80 members of Congress calling on Secretary of State John Kerry to "exhaust every possible option to secure U.S. citizen Saeed Abedini's release from Iran."
Saeed Abedini is a convert from Islam. Now a Christian pastor, Abedini has made several trips to Iran in recent years. But the Islamic Republic has repeatedly harassed him. Now Abedini is sitting in one of Iran's most notorious jails after a mock trial in a kangaroo court. Rep. Franks and other members of Congress are demanding the Obama Administration find its voice when it comes to defending Pastor Abedini's religious freedom. I applaud their efforts, but I won't hold my breath waiting for Obama or Kerry to speak up.

| Republicans Set to Cave on Hagel |

With Republicans sympathetic to Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel preparing to cave, Hagel's confirmation to head the Pentagon seems all but assured. According to Reuters on Thursday afternoon, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) has now stated that he will support Hagel's nomination, just a week after joining the Republican effort to block Hagel's nomination until he disclosed information about speeches and finances. Hagel has not turned over such information. The White House continues to stonewall all requests. But Shelby is caving anyway. "He's probably as good as we're going to get," said Shelby.
Joining Shelby, reportedly, is Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE), who said on KFAB radio in Omaha, "I will be voting no on the floor," but reportedly added that she would vote for cloture, which would bring Hagel to a vote.

Ever since the mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the Left has rabidly pursued all manner of unconstitutional gun control legislation. Federal, state and local, the NeoComs stop at nothing to deprive us of our unalienable rights, endowed by our Creator. Yet all is not lost as long as we stand firm.
The National Institute of Justice, the research branch of the Justice Department, recently leaked a memo evaluating many of the White House's preferred gun control measures. For example, the NIJ says that Dianne Feinstein's defensive weapons ban is "unlikely to have an impact on gun violence" because -- wait for it -- those firearms "are not a major contributor to gun crime." Therefore, concludes the NIJ, in order for a ban to be effective, it would have to include no exemptions and be paired with a mandatory buyback program.
Notably, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) just introduced legislation to impose a 10 percent tax on concealable firearms, aiming to fund a federal buyback with the revenue collected.
The NIJ reaches similar conclusions about magazine capacity limits, which would be ineffective while exempting currently owned magazines, and universal background checks, which won't work without national gun registration because criminals use straw purchasers or steal weapons in order to avoid background checks.
The question is, will Obama and the NeoComs pursue NIJ's recommended "fixes" to their obviously flawed plans?

During his State of the Union address this month, President Obama called for a universal preschool program. The idea is that widespread preschool will boost students' educational achievements later in life.
The fact is, however, that universal preschool-which is on the books in Georgia and Oklahoma-is costly and has not been demonstrated to improve educational achievement.
The Heritage Foundation's Lindsey Burke explains that these programs don't raise test scores as liberals suppose. "In fact, in Oklahoma, fourth-grade reading test scores have declined since 1998, when the state first implemented universal preschool," Burke explains.
Despite the lack of educational benefit, a universal preschool program would be expensive-driving more debt, tax increases, or both. In Georgia, Burke reports, the state "spends heavily on early childhood education, over $355 million in 2011." America can't afford this kind of spending with nothing to show for it.

Georgia and Oklahoma should provide a cautionary note to proponents of government preschool. The experiences of these two states cast doubt that a federal universal preschool would yield the significant long-term benefits that supporters promise.

Calvin Coolidge, our most understated president, was also one of our most underrated presidents, syndicated columnist and bestselling author Amity Shlaes said Wednesday at The Heritage Foundation on Wednesday.
Today's lawmakers can learn a lot from Coolidge's approach, said Shlaes, author of a new biography of the 30th president.
Coolidge-named by Heritage's Joe Postell as "an intellectual and political forefather of modern American conservatism"-was devoted to cutting taxes and reducing spending. When Coolidge assumed office, the top marginal tax rate was 56 percent. Coolidge managed to lower the top rate to 25 percent to promote growth. Not even Ronald Reagan was able to bring the top rate that low.
When Coolidge ran for reelection in 1924, he won with an absolute majority despite the progressive party taking seventeen percent of the vote. Voters rewarded Coolidge for having the courage to cut taxes, cut spending, and say "no."

Even though the federal government is expected to run a $750 billion deficit this year, liberals continue to resist any spending cuts. Relying on Keynesian economics, they argue that these cuts would hurt the economy.

On Pennsylvania Avenue, right near the end, there lived a President who wanted to spend.
He knew spending meant power, so hour by hour, he thought up more spends from his Washington tower.
"I'll spend without limits; I'll spend without blame! Raising taxes to pay-that's the name of the game."
Down the street, though, a House filled with thriftier folk had a budget to pass, or the country'd go broke. "We can't spend all day; we've got bills to pay! Let's keep deficits and higher taxes away."
The Senate next door to the House just refused. "We don't like your budget. We've got some bad news: The President says we can spend all we want, and we'll simply raise taxes whenever we choose."
So they spent and they spent and they borrowed some more. And when all that was spent, they spent same as before.
But not everyone thought the spending was nice. In the House and the Senate, some spenders thought twice. "We'll cut down on spending. We have a bad feeling..." then-SMACK!-right on schedule, they hit the debt ceiling.
Then the President's office, confronted with debt: "If it's cuts they want now, then it's cuts they shall get. We'll threaten such cuts that NO one would take, and show them that cuts are not smart to make."
"This will make Congress move. We'll just float out a tester... broad, haphazard cuts that we'll call the sequester."
The Senate and even the House said, "Okay! That will motivate us to find a good way. We'll figure this out and stave off those cuts-to allow them to happen, we'd have to be nuts."
So the deadline was set, but the spending went on. A year and a half had soon come and gone. The House passed a budget; the Senate said no; the President very much enjoyed the show.
"Spend higher! Spend faster! Grow the welfare rolls! Soon, love for the spending will show up in the polls." He even raised taxes, but it wasn't enough-the levels of spending grew too fast to keep up.
"Don't you mind the sequester," he told Capitol Hill. "You said you would fix it, and I'm sure you will."
But they could not agree on ways to cut spending, and before they knew it, the sequester was pending.
"Oh no!" they all cried. "We can't let these cuts stand!"
And the President said, "WHO thought of this terrible plan?"
They didn't remember his plan all along. He distracted them with his spending-cut song. Now he returned to save them from harm, and to keep them forgetting all but his charm.
So the President said with a glint in his eye, "You tried to cut spending. I saw how you tried. But it's just too painful-I'm sure you can see. From the beginning, you should have listened to me."
"I'll save you all from the spend-cutters' axes. You see, the solution is just to raise taxes."

We don't know yet how this story will end. Will Congress raise taxes and continue to spend? We need a balanced budget with smarter cuts-reforming entitlements will take guts.

Placing blame for the adverse consequences of sequestration where it belongs - a modest proposal

Yesterday, Steve suggested that congressional Republicans should prepare detailed budget cuts of their own, department-by-department, providing exact line items of what programs can be cut or delayed under a sequester. If House Republicans can get their act together to that extent, I second the motion.
Meanwhile, here's another possible approach that isn't inconsistent with Steve's. When the public begins to feel the bite of the sequester, House Republicans should haul the relevant cabinet members and agency heads before the applicable Committee. Because the money available to the department or agency in question even after the sequester will exceed that available to them not long ago, the official in question should explain why services provided not long ago cannot be provided now.
The agency head presumably will say that the cuts are too indiscriminate. The question should then be whether the agency could provide better service if it had discretion to administer the cuts as it sees fit.
If the House has passed legislation granting that discretion, the agency head will be in a box. To agree that the added discretion would help is to admit that the Senate Democrats and President Obama should have supported the Republican legislation. To deny that the added discretion would help is to (1) admit to a low level of administrative skill and (2) contradict the earlier admission that the agency isn't running properly because, at least in part, the cuts are too indiscriminate.
If an agency head insists that there is no way to maintain decent levels of service even with more flexibility, the question will remain how they managed to do so with a larger budget just a few years ago. In addition, if Republican members do their homework, they can ask about specific, sensible-souding alternatives for cost savings (per Steve's point).
Assuming effective examination by House Republicans, it's difficult to see the heads of agenices that are providing poor service coming out of these hearings looking good. And by extension, it's difficult to see President Obama avoiding the impression (1) that he has placed incompetents in charge of key agencies and (2) that he isn't doing all he could to avoid the adverse consequences of the sequester.

Hysteria is rampant inside the Beltway, as politicians and their media fanboys contemplate the unheard-of possibility that federal spending may not rise very much this year. The horror! I'm guessing that outside the confines of America's last boom town, the idea of cutting federal spending sounds pretty good. Most voters are probably skeptical that it will really happen, given the federal government's iron grip on our wallets, and they may be right. But my own view, that the biggest problem with sequestration is that it doesn't cut enough, is, I suspect, widely shared.
Sure, the administration will try to make the cuts as noticeable and annoying to the public as possible. And, sure, the state-controlled media will abet the administration's deceptions. (Covering up news has replaced reporting news as the liberal media's principal purpose.) But at some level, reality is hard to overlook. The idea that a miniscule cut-i.e. reduction of the increase-in federal spending represents some kind of crisis is ludicrous.
While sequestration isn't perfect, it is by far the best option on the table, given the Democrats' intransigence, and Republicans should embrace it. Many Republican officeholders don't seem to understand that the biggest knock on Republicans is not that they are too "extreme," it is that they continually fail to achieve the objectives on which they campaign. So if voters believe that the GOP has succeeded in bringing about meaningful cuts in the federal budget, hallelujah! Nothing could be better for the Republican brand.

The big news in the upcoming Italian election is the rise of former comedian Beppe Grillo, whose party may finish as high as second in the voting. There is a lot about Grillo at The Corner. He sounds like a pretty typical bad-government populist; normally you would think it would be a disaster if he took power, but this is Italy, so things may or may not get worse.
What jumped out at me was this Grillo quote:
In order to remain in the euro, we are starving the country...If we had the lira, we could solve our debt problem through a devaluation of our currency.
That's what members of the political class all over the world are thinking, but most of them don't say it so bluntly.

Paint It Black: Post-Mortem on a Sort-Of Race Riot

We noted here the confusion that was engendered in local media by a melee at South High School in Minneapolis between Somali immigrants and native-born black students. It was hard to make the usual narratives fit. So today, the Minneapolis Star Tribune enlisted two Macalester College professors in a further effort at explication:
The brawl between Somali-Americans and black students at Minneapolis' South High School caught the outside world by surprise, but not the people who walk the tense line between cultures.
But wait! Aren't Somali-Americans black too? This is so confusing!
Across town in St. Paul, two Macalester College professors - one Somali-American, the other African-American - know well the culture clash that sometimes flares between two peoples who share the same race but not the same story.
Somali is in Africa, obviously, so why isn't the first professor also an African-American? And if they "share the same race," then why aren't they all black? Maybe the key phrase here is "not the same story."
Many Somalis came here with "very negative perceptions" of African-Americans, their notions based on movies that cast African-Americans as drug addicts or killers, said Abdirizak Bihi, a Somali activist.
Hmm.

For their part, some African-Americans feel the disrespect and perceive that the new Africans are getting a bit better treatment from the larger community. ...
"Black people are already here. They've seen everybody come here and everybody seems to get a break," [Professor] El-Kati said. "They see how other people are celebrated when they do the slightest good thing. "Black people have done many good things in this country for which they've never been saluted," he said, noting especially the forced labor that helped build America's material success. Well, he has a point. We certainly haven't heard much about slavery over the last 148 years. 
Ahmed Samatar
[Professor Ahmed] Samatar, who came to the United States as a college student in the 1970s, said most Somalis who have settled in Minnesota came here as refugees. The article doesn't mention it, but Professor Samatar recently ran for President of Somalia. They also had little clue about America's slave history, he said. "African-Americans have paid a heavy price through the generations for civilizing the United States in that direction. The Somalis are not aware of that because they are not educated in American history and the struggle that has taken place in this country for generations and generations. "For the African-Americans it becomes disrespectful, in not understanding what has taken place and what's still taking place," he said.
"Still taking place?" What does that mean? I think what Professor Samatar is getting at here is that the Somalis have not yet figured out that the way to get ahead in America is to declare yourselves a victim group. The Star-Tribune would never put it that way, but this seems to be at the heart of the conflict that led to the lunch room riot. Don't worry, though: Professor Samatar and others will see that the Somalis get the word.  | |
Why Dartmouth cannot be saved

The Dartmouth Review, a publication with a proud conservative tradition, recently produced a list of "what we need from President Hanlon," the College's new president. It included items like restoring pre-matriculation AP credits, improving the pricing system used by the dining services, pushing back against the town police, ending the ban on kegs, doing a better job of monitoring of frat parties, and so forth.
The list contained no suggestions relating directly to the improvement of academic instruction. In particular, there was nothing about overcoming the leftist rot that has spread through many of the humanities department.
For example, nothing in the Review's agenda would help students (some of whom I know) who would have liked to major in English because they love literature, but shied away for fear that they couldn't find enough English courses that treat literature seriously. Nothing in the agenda would have saved my daughter, who wanted to study American-Jewish literature, from the jargon-riddled professor of that subject whose opening lecture, a combination of the nonsensical and the incomprehensible, chased her away. And nothing in the agenda would produce progress in this regard by diversifying the ideological composition of the hard-left dominated faculty.
In a sense, the Review is right not to go there. We cannot expect Phil Hanlon to march into Sanborn and demand that the English department begin treating literature seriously, rather than as a springboard for the political or personal agenda of particular professors. Jim Kim said that when a new president to concerns himself with the nature of instruction, he commits "rookie mistake." When any college president challenges the leftist nature of instruction, he commits a fatal mistake.
The Review's wish-list should thus be viewed as the final proof that Dartmouth is lost. The College probably will be marginally better under Hanlon than it was under Kim. And it will remain an institution that, by virtue of its past, will be worthy of the love of alums of a certain age. It will also, considering that nearly all of its competitors suffer from the same underlying flaw, be a college we can send our children to, depending on their options.
But it will not, in the foreseeable future, be an institution worthy of our support.

While we follow the spectacle of prospective immigration reform and whether Congress employs various "terminological inexactitudes" (Churchill's term for "lie") to disguise what would be in essence a blanket amnesty, herewith Churchill's remark from 1906 that bears on this point:
In dealing with nationalities, nothing is more fatal than a dodge. Wrongs will be forgiven, sufferings and losses will be forgiven or forgotten, battles will be remembered only as they recall the martial virtues of the combatants; but anything like a chicane, anything like a trick, will always rankle.

Sequestering Common Sense

So we know, courtesy of that Washington oracle Bob Woodward, that Obama and the White House have simply lied about the origin of the sequester that the Establishment is saying will result in the loosing of the Seven Horsemen of the Apocalypse. I guess we shouldn't be amazed at the cynicism of the White House in predicting doom and gloom about a $42 billion (the real cut will only be about half the advertised $85 billion) cut from a budget of $3.8 trillion. The media and the people are another matter.
You would think by this time that the urbane sophisticates in the news media would be totally hip to the "Washington Monument" strategy, whereby the Park Service closes the most popular attractions first in the event of budget constraints. It's the oldest bureaucratic trick in the book, and a mark of how far the corruption of our republic has proceeded: if the spenders don't get their way, they'll cut back first on the most essential services for which we presume to pay our first tax dollars. Talk about an offer you can't refuse: the government intends to hold the people hostage to its insatiable rapacity.
Will Americans really fall for threats of delayed air traffic control, longer TSA lines, cancelled food safety inspections, and reruns of "Who's The Boss" on PBS? (Okay, I made that last one up, but it equals the absurdity of the others.) Of course, what this reveals is one more bit of evidence conservatives have long recognized: the mainstream media are in on the game, and will side with the Washington big government Establishment every time over the interests of the people.
Republicans should do more than just prepare legislation providing "flexibility" to the executive branch to administer these tiny budget cuts. They should prepare detailed budget cuts of their own department-by-department, providing exact line items of what programs can be cut or delayed under a sequester in the Dept. of Transportation, for example, so that it is not necessary to cut back on air traffic controllers in the towers, or food safety inspectors at USDA. They should announce these on a daily basis, as well as highlighting just one wasteful program in each department every day. The Pentagon should not be exempt from this, either. I'm sure the Pentagon can delay sexual harassment training programs for a few months, or can tell some colonels to drive their own cars to base instead of having a personal driver.
Finally, the White House panic over the sequester, like their eagerness in the end to strike a deal over the fiscal cliff back on January 1, suggests that they fear the results much more than Republicans do, for the simple reason that more of their client groups depend on federal money-groups like Planned Parenthood, for example.

Sears pulls from SNL, now contact J.C. Penney

Today, AFA received this statement from Sears regarding its recent advertising on NBC.com's "Saturday Night Live."
"Thanks for bringing it to our attention, it wasn't supposed to happen and we're taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen again. Going forward our ads will not run in this form again around SNL."
Last Saturday night, the network aired a violent and gory segment mocking Jesus Christ (see earlier alert here). NBC publicly painted Jesus as a vengeful murderer bent on killing the Romans who crucified Him.
Sears and its subsidiary Kmart ran multiple ads on the episode. Thank you for taking action. Your efforts made the difference!
J.C. Penney also sponsored the show and has not responded to its funding of this hateful and intolerant attack on Christianity.
