Quote:
"Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all."

'Whose Side Are You On?' Columbine Survivor Blasts Obama
President Obama says he wants to restrict Americans' rights under the Second Amendment in order to "save lives," but Evan Todd isn't buying it.
Todd was one of the people injured in the infamous Columbine High School shootings, and in a recent open letter to President Obama, he pulled no punches.
"Why would you prefer criminals to have the ability to out-gun law-abiding citizens?" he demanded. "Whose side are you on?"
It's a question many people have wondered about.
The shooting survivor stresses that under Obama's proposals, law-abiding Americans would be put in danger by being restricted from owning certain weapons or having the amount of ammunition they can carry limited.
Todd points out that assault weapons bans have little effect on crime, and in particular he notes that the original federal weapons ban did nothing to protect him from being shot in 1999.
"It was during this time that I personally witnessed two fellow students murder twelve of my classmates and one teacher. The assault weapons ban did not deter these two murderers, nor did the other thirty-something laws that they broke," Todd wrote.
Todd takes particular exception to requiring universal background checks:
"A universal background check will ... arguably have the opposite impact of what you propose. ... With the conditions being set by this initiative, it will create a large black market for weapons and will support more criminal activity and funnel additional money into the hands of thugs, criminals, and people who will do harm to American citizens.
"... Is a universal background check system possible without universal gun registration? If so, please define it for us. Universal registration can easily be used for universal confiscation. ... It is not impossible to think that a tyrant, to the likes of Mao, Castro, Che, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and others, could possibly rise to power in America. ... It is safe to assume that this liberty that our forefathers secured has been a thorn in the side of would-be tyrants ever since the Second Amendment was adopted."
He also didn't mince any words about some of the shenanigans the Man Who Would Be King and his Administration have been up to.

Correct stand on gun control
I would like to applaud our congressmen, Michael Fitzpatrick, for his stand on gun control. When I called his Washington office last week to ask if the congressmen has taken a stand on gun control, I was told by an office staffer that Congressmen Fitzpatrick believes "no private citizen should own any military-style weapons."
Please contact his D.C. office at 202-225-4276 to lend your support.
Marijane Meckling, Buckingham Township
Dear Fellow Patriot:
Please call or e-mail Representative Fitzpatrick . Tell him that you reject this kind of a rhetorical position and ask him:
- What do you mean by this?
- Does this mean that I can no longer possess a semi-automatic pistol , rifle or shotgun and their respective magazines?
- Should we no longer be able to exercise the well defined right by the founders of the 2nd amendment to protect ourselves from criminals and discourage the government from nullifying our Constitutional rights ?
Contact Representative Fitzpatrick and respectfully ask the above questions:

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
|
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
- Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
- Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

Important Announcement from SFL
|
You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.
Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.
I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.
Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".
Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.
Click here to read my blog post on the SFL website about our first DVD.

Saturday Workout with Dom
Rescheduled
February 23, 12-2 PM (details below)
Open to Association Members and Friends
February 20, 2013, 9 PM
Dear Members and Friends,
On Friday (February 22), 12-1 PM, the never-ending Obama Campaign is planning a National Day of Action to Reduce Gun Violence. (What a joke--typical agitation propaganda!)
They are meeting at various Republican congressional offices throughout the country, including Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick's office in Langhorne.
While we are not planning a counter demonstration, we see no reason why some of our members shouldn't stop by the offices of our regional Republican Congressmen (Barletta, Dent, Fitzpatrick, Gerlach, Lobiondo, Meehan, Pitts, Runyan, Smith) this Friday to offer them and their staff encouragement.
While we may not always agree with our Republican representatives, they are the only line of defense standing between us and Obama-style socialism.
It's more than clear that the Democrats are focused on winning back the House in 2014.
We will not allow that to happen!!!
T-Survey Results on Gun Control, Immigration, Sequestration, and the 2016 Presidential Race
Thank you to all of those who took part in our survey! In spite of the technical difficulties, we were able to record several hundred votes. Your participation will allow us to better represent your views. And thanks for all the insightful comments.

More than 80% agreed of you with the Association's stand against the 'Fiscal Cliff' compromise.

Important Dates:
- February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
- February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
- March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
- April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.
Any questions, holler.

IMPORTANT MEETING - MUST ATTEND!! LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD. Dear Patriots, Please plan on attending this meeting on February 28, 2013. There is a proposed bike trail in several different areas of Chester County costing a wopping 45 million dollars for the project. Whether you live in these areas or not, we need everyone to attend this and speak up. As you know, our county taxes have gone up this year and with this proposed plan, I am sure they will be going up even higher. Question: How many miles of trails and pedestrian walkways do we already have and what is the utilization? Where is the money going to come from to pay for these new trails? Who is pushing for this and why? You may think that your voice does not count. Word of encouragement. It does. Last night, there was a meeting in Oxford boro where the boro was pushing through some gun restrictions (magazines, etc). A group of concerned citizens (between 100 - 200 people) spoke up and the motion was not passed. I believe in order to fight what is going on, we need to come out in masses. Also, another encouraging word, a smartmeter man came up to one of our fellow patriots to install a smart meter. Fortunately the person was home and explained to him why he did not want a smart meter (equipment he had in his house would be affected). After talking with the gentlemen installing the smart meter, and him taking notes, the man left without installing the smart meter. Now I am sure this is not the end of it, but everyone can make a difference. Pass this email on to everyone you know and please I urge you to attend this meeting. The liberals will be there so we need to be there will double the amount of people. Thank you. Click on the visit our website link below for the meeting announcement. PLEASE NOTE; THIS MEETING IS ON A WEDNESDAY!! We're looking to increase our group! Join us...bring a friend or two. An invitation has gone out to Concerned Gun Owners of Bucks County to speak at our meeting. The 2nd Amendment must be a concern of all law-abiding citizens. We CANNOT let the opposition infringe upon our God given rights. ... We have persons within our group who give a short summary of what is happening in their community. What are the hot issues in Harrisburg? How do you feel about Governor Corbett's budget? liquor privatization? Agenda 21? Why is Penn State on the New Drone Authorization List? Who is funding these drones? How do you feel about Immigration? the "No Labels" group in Congress? See More

And here's some really great news: This year's registration fee is only $229! Register by April 15th and you'll receive our "Early Bird" rate of just $189!

We also offer again this year special benefits for Patriot Eagle and Patriot sponsors. We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:

- Ezra Levant - Canadian lawyer, author, newspaper columnist with Sun Media, and former publisher of the Western Standard. Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!

Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
- You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
- I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.

Awareness about Agenda 21 is finally spreading throughout the country, due in no small part to your efforts. But knowing it is there isn't enough. Now we need to educate ourselves on how to combat it. That's where you come in.
American Policy Center has recently released a booklet that explains everything you need to know to start fighting back against sustainable programs both locally and nationally. The booklet is called Special Report: Agenda 21 and How to Stop It and is available in the APC store for only $5.95.
I wrote this 35 page booklet in order to give activists a succinct resource they can refer to if they suspect Agenda 21 or Sustainable Development is being implemented in their area. It includes my own research coupled with incredibly helpful graphics created by Carroll County, Maryland Commissioner Richard Rothschild.
In the booklet you will find answers to several roadblocks that grassroots anti-Agenda 21 activists often face, including a definition of property rights and "Resolution to Protect Citizens' Property Rights," which many concerned citizens are already using to tie the hands of power hungry politicians.
This booklet is a great resource for anyone interested in preserving their property rights. It includes all the information to put up a first line of defense and step by step instructions for how to proceed from there. If you face Agenda 21 or Sustainable development in your area or are simply concerned with the national fight this booklet is a must read.

P.S. - The American Policy Center store has recently updated our inventory to include everything you need to fight back against Agenda 21. The revamped catalogue includes the "Stop Agenda 21 Action Kit", which provides users with everything they need to know about Agenda 21 in their own living room, as well as ways to share it with other concerned activists and critical knowledge on how to fight back. The store also offers DVDs of past successful conferences and symposiums, books and articles that deal with the issues of sustainability and Agenda 21 and individually packaged manuals and workbooks to aid you in your activism. You don't need to look any farther than the American Policy Center Store for everything you need to combat Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development in your area.

Morning Jolt - February 21, 2013
By Jim Geraghty
Heads up - this is the final Morning Jolt of the week. I'll be in Scottsdale, Ariz., for the next few days, at a journalism conference put on by the good folks at the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity.
Enjoy your Thursday Morning Jolt!
Jim
Is the GOP Botching the Sequester?
Our old friend Byron York makes some good points here, but I don't think the GOP's argument is quite as garbled as he suggests.
In a Wall Street Journal op-ed Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner describes the upcoming sequester as a policy "that threatens U.S. national security, thousands of jobs and more."
Which leads to the question: Why would Republicans support a measure that threatens national security and thousands of jobs? Boehner and the GOP are determined to allow the $1.2 trillion sequester go into effect unless President Obama and Democrats agree to replacement cuts, of an equal amount, that target entitlement spending. If that doesn't happen - and it seems entirely unlikely - the sequester goes into effect, with the GOP's blessing.
In addition, Boehner calls the cuts "deep," when most conservatives emphasize that for the next year they amount to about $85 billion out of a $3,600 billion budget. Which leads to another question: Why would Boehner adopt the Democratic description of the cuts as "deep" when they would touch such a relatively small part of federal spending?
The effect of Boehner's argument is to make Obama seem reasonable in comparison. After all, the president certainly agrees with Boehner that the sequester cuts threaten national security and jobs. The difference is that Obama wants to avoid them. At the same time, Boehner is contributing to Republican confusion on the question of whether the cuts are in fact "deep" or whether they are relatively minor.
Here's the 3-by-5 index-card version of what the GOP's message on sequestration ought to be:
- Our current level of spending is unsustainable. Spending must go down. Period.
- This is a 2 percent cut.
- Sure, if we in the Republican party had complete control of the government, we would be implementing the cuts differently. But we don't.
- Congress can only appropriate funds; it doesn't run the departments and agencies that spend the money. That's the power and responsibility of the executive branch.
- If the Obama administration's response to a 2 percent cut is really to let all the criminals out of the jails and end food-safety inspections, then it is no longer disputable that he's a Stuttering Cluster-you-know-what of a Miserable Failure.
I'm not exaggerating on Obama's doomsday talk:
President Obama on Tuesday painted a dire picture of federal government operations across the United States should automatic budget cuts hit on March 1: F.B.I. agents furloughed, criminals released, flights delayed, teachers and police officers laid off and parents frantic to find a place for children locked out of day care centers.
"Federal prosecutors will have to close cases and let criminals go," Mr. Obama said, flanked by law enforcement officers at the White House. "Tens of thousands of parents will have to scramble to find child care for their kids."
While the effects may ultimately be significant, many are unlikely to be felt immediately, officials said Tuesday after the president's remarks. Rather, they will ripple gradually across the federal government as agencies come to grips in the months ahead with across-the-board cuts to all their programs. . . .
But officials conceded that day care centers are almost certainly not going to be padlocked on March 1. Border patrols will be staffed throughout that day and the days to come. Federal agents will continue to conduct investigations, and criminals will not immediately be "let go," as Mr. Obama suggested.
This is the Washington Monument strategy:
Named after a tactic used by the National Park Service to threaten closure of the popular Washington Monument when lawmakers proposed serious cuts in spending on parks.
Roll Call calls it "an old legislative ploy where an agency threatens to close popular services first."
The strategy is used at all levels of government in an attempt to get the public to rally around government services they take pride in or find useful. Closing libraries on certain days of the week or reducing days of trash pick up appears to have the same effect.
Will some of these cuts stink? Yes. I dread 800,000 civilian employees of the Department of Defense working four days a week.
The GOP message is, and should continue to be, "Hate these cuts? Then let's take on the biggest issue, entitlement spending."
As Yuval Levin recently spotlighted, one tweak to the cost-of-living adjustment to Social Security effectively saves that program for the foreseeable future:
We might pay wealthier individuals with higher Social Security benefits lower annual cost-of-living adjustments than those receiving lower benefits. A progressive COLA could reduce high-end benefits by reasonable amounts in the near term while generating incentives - not disincentives - to work or save. A policy in which the highest third of beneficiaries received no COLA, the lowest third received a full COLA, and the middle third received half the current COLA would reduce Social Security outlays by around 12 percent over the first ten years. In fact, the savings from this measure alone would be enough to balance the program's finances over the long term.
Believe It or Not, the Establishment vs. Grassroots Fights Will Pass
Boy, Ace of Spades sounds a lot like the usually Eeyore-ish Allahpundit all of a sudden:
I think people in the party have resigned themselves to being a minority party for 8-16 years. Since they do not entertain any hopes of having actual political power, what's left is interparty jockeying for position in the pecking order.
We're obviously not going to win in this state. The smartest guys in the party, at least as regards retail politics, are broadcasting this to me. As they plainly believe it, I must take this seriously.
And I have. Apparently this is going to be a philosophical period, the political equivalent of a "rebuilding season" (well, like four to eight rebuilding seasons in a row).
We're not interested in going after Democrats, not really; that seems too out of our grasp. Victories over each other seem more manageable, more winnable. We've decided, collectively, that we can't go to market (that is, the greater political contest of Republicans vs. Democrats) until we've finished our playoffs of Grassroots vs. Establishment for 8-16 years.
Given that the party doesn't want to win, I don't see the point of pretending otherwise.
All of this Grassroots vs. Establishment conflict gets a lot of attention because A) it's easy to write about and talk about, B) everybody's got an opinion on it, and C) almost everybody's got a strong opinion on it. You don't have to review FEC records or do any policy research to write about this perennial fight. Write about it and the comments section bursts into flame; talk about it on the radio and the call lines light up; bring it up on TV and you've got instant passionate conflict.
(At this point, suspicious readers are furrowing their brow and asking, "Hey, wait a minute, doesn't Jim write about this topic a lot?")
And until we start seeing the lineup for the GOP primaries in the 2014 midterms, we don't even know if there are going to be a lot of great Grassroots vs. Establishment fights in the coming cycle. There certainly won't be that storyline in New Jersey's governor's race, and I'll talk about Virginia in a second. Maybe if the South Carolina special House election comes down to Mark Sanford and another Republican making his political debut, the Sanford challenger will attempt to position the race as Grassroots vs. Establishment . . . except that Sanford fought pretty often with the existing GOP establishment in both Washington and with the GOP legislature in Columbia. In Missouri, the local GOP already picked their candidate for their special House election, and in the special House election in Chicago, well . . . for there to be a GOP-establishment pick, there would have to be a functioning local GOP.
Until very recently, the folks demanding a primary challenger to Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky didn't have a candidate. Now they've got Louisville businessman Matthew Bevin. Most of us know little or nothing about him; the most extensive recent profile on him can be found in the Lousiville business press. There will be a lot of kicking the tires. Maybe he's a great challenger, or maybe he's a dud.
One thing we do need to establish going forward is that the right way to sort these divisions out is through primaries, and that this third-party spoiler crap has to end immediately. Here in Virginia, lieutenant governor Bill Bolling is the latest GOP lawmaker to flirt with the I'm-gonna-lose-the-party-nomination-so-I'll-leave Club. If Bolling bolts, he'll join Charlie Crist of Florida and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska; we can throw in Arlen Specter flipping parties, too.
Hey, guys, "if I stay in the party I'll lose the nomination, and I don't want to" is not a principled reason to leave the party.
A 'Lifetime Ban' for a Prominent Democrat
Pete Rose. Lance Armstrong. Jon Corzine.
A private regulatory body will consider on Wednesday whether it should ban former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine from putting other's people money at risk by trading in the commodities market.
The highly unorthodox move is being contemplated by the National Futures Association in response to a perceived lack of action by the government against Corzine, according to one of the people who is pushing the action forward.
Corzine was CEO of commodities broker MF Global in October 2011, when the firm collapsed, causing about $1 billion in losses to consumers whose money should have been safely guarded in separate accounts. In spite of congressional testimony accusing him of breaking the law in the firm's final few weeks, Corzine has not been charged with any crime and is rumored to be raising cash to start a commodities-focused hedge fund.
Gee, why would the government seem to drag its feet in dealing with Corzine?
Oh, that's right. President Obama said he was an ally in developing the stimulus. Vice President Biden said he called on Corzine for advice on the economy. Obama called him his "Wall Street guy."

During the second debate it appeared that moderator Candy Crowley, of CNN, tossed a "flag" on the statement from Romney . . . → Read More: Debate Commission co-chair says Candy Crowley was a "mistake"

RedState Morning Briefing
For February 22, 2013
1. The American Conservative Union's Embarrassing Scorecard
I had to look twice. Then I looked one more time.
The American Conservative Union ("ACU") has released its annual scorecard. It is supposed to be a scorecard for a measure of conservatism on Capitol Hill.
So you will be as surprised as I was to find that Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican Leader with a history of undermining conservatives in the Senate, has a 100% score for 2012 - higher, in fact, that either Jim DeMint or Tom Coburn.
I had to laugh.
I have to hope someone on the ACU's Board has some sense of shame. Chairman Al Cardenas, in his letter introducing the 2012 scorecard, writes, "our ratings have become the most important conservative measuring stick in American politics."
Not after this. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2. ObamaNation: At least $177 Million In Tax Dollars Paid For Federal Workers To Do Union Business Many taxpayers may not realize that their tax dollars are used to pay government workers to actually conduct union business-not the work of the government. This practice has the official name of Official Time and is defined by the Office of Personnel Management as: "Official time is time spent by Federal employees performing representational work for a bargaining unit in lieu of their regularly assigned work." Unlike the private sector, where companies or unions pay union representatives to conduct "union business," our system of government unions allows union representatives who happen to be federal employees time away from their normal duties in order to conduct union business-all at taxpayer expense. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 3. Santa Fe Releases Names of People who Participated in 'Anonymous' Gun Buyback After the shooting in Newtown, New Mexico officials in a couple cities have supported a 'gun buyback.' Among cities coming up with their own plans are Albuquerque and Santa Fe. People who participated in the Santa Fe buyback, which was dubbed "Operation Safe Streets" were given up to a couple hundred dollars per firearm they turned over. These citizens were lead to believe that their participation would remain anonymous. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 4. Kasich Repeats Medicaid Expansion Lies in Ohio State of the State Address Governor John Kasich forcefully repeated multiple falsehoods about expanding Medicaid eligibility in Ohio during his 2013 State of the State address on February 19. As he and his administration have done for weeks, Kasich falsely insisted that Ohio's promised federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) funding for expanding Medicaid will be sent to other states if Ohio rejects the expansion. The Ohio Channel has the governor's entire speech; watch the segment in question to see Kasich pressure legislators by inaccurately asserting their rejection of Medicaid expansion would not prevent any of PPACA's new spending. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Some wars are lost in a matter of moments, others stretch on indefinitely. The defeat in Afghanistan crept up silently on the national consciousness and even though we are negotiating with the Taliban, the "D" word is hardly used by anyone. According to Obama, in one of his interminable speeches which all run together and sound the same, there really isn't a war, just a mission, and the old mission is now becoming a new sort of mission, and the missions, all of them, whether in Afghanistan or Iraq, have been successful which is why we are wrapping them up, except that we aren't really. And that's about as clear as the message from the big white building with the neatly mowed lawn out front gets, except for the part about how its occupant singlehandedly parachuted into Pakistan, killed Bin Laden, and then stopped off for some curry and a humanitarian award. Had McCain won in 2008, we would no doubt he hearing a lot about the "D" word and the quagmire in Afghanistan. But the "Q" word doesn't really get mentioned either. No war has been lost. Only a mission is ending. And missions, unlike wars, can be defined in so many creative ways that it's hard to know what to make of them. It's easy to tell when a war has been lost, but a mission can never be lost, only renamed. And renaming is what Obama did to the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. Those wars weren't lost; they're only hiding out in the history books under new names and identities. Wars are usually remembered according to the proclivities of their historians. The history books tend to record the Republican presidents of the last hundred years as either losing wars or winning wars that weren't worth winning. Democrats however usually win every one.

GOP Senators Urge White House to Withdraw Hagel Nomination |
|
by Mike Flynn
The acrimony surrounding Chuck Hagel's confirmation to lead the Defense Department has caused a handful of Senators to formally ask the White House to withdraw his nomination. The almost unprecedented step has capped weeks of debate over Hagel's fitness for the job. In an effort led by TX Sen. John Cornyn, 11 GOP Senators have signed a letter asking the White House to drop Hagel's nomination.
While other Senators are likely to add their names to the letter, the current 11 signers make a symbolic point. In the history of the office, no Defense Secretary has taken office with more than 11 votes against their nomination. In the last 50 years, no Secretary has taken office with more than three votes in opposition. Even if he limps to confirmation, Hagel is already a failed nominee.

February 21, 2013
Dear Friends,
Thank you for calling your Senators and urging them to oppose Chuck Hagel. Last week's failed cloture vote on Hagel's nomination was a temporary victory, but unfortunately several Senators who voted against ending debate on Hagel's nomination are indicating that their position is weakening. We need your help to encourage Senators to stand strong.
Harry Reid chastised Senate Republicans for their unprecedented opposition to a Cabinet nomination, but Hagel is a spectacularly bad nominee who proves the need for the Senate's constitutional advice and consent duties to check Presidential power. Senators were wise to proceed cautiously.
Hagel's abysmal performance during his nomination hearings and his radical positions have embarrassed liberals, and reports indicate that liberal Senators in conservative states, particularly those facing re-election in 2014 are urging President Obama to get Hagel to withdraw, because they don't want to be saddled with such a bad vote. We need to keep up the pressure!
Just some of the reasons we oppose Hagel are:
- Hagel would be our first "anti-military" Secretary of Defense.
- He has consistently declared that he believes in a "pared down" Pentagon.
- He voted no on a measure requiring separate barracks for men and women during basic military training.
- He is a director of an elitist globalist movement called "Global Zero," which advocates full-scale nuclear disarmament, a philosophy President Obama agrees with. This is especially dangerous at a time when North Korea is testing nuclear missiles.
- Hagel serves on the board of the Ploughshares Fund, a George Soros-funded group that advocates getting rid of our nuclear weapons, opposes U.S. development of a missile-defense system, and promotes global governance.
- Hagel believes that a U.S. missile defense system should only be deployed with the cooperation of Russia; he does not consider such cooperation from Russia as important when it comes to reducing nuclear weapons. He has called for "sharply reducing the number of U.S. nuclear weapons, possibly without equivalent cuts by Russia," according to the Associated Press.
- While Hagel wants to pare down the U.S. military and voted for legislation that is detrimental to U.S. military readiness, according to his nomination questionnaires, he advocates that the U.S. and the U.S. military have much more involvement with the United Nations. In his 2008 book, America: Our Next Chapter, Hagel wrote:
The United Nations can play a central and critical role in forging connections. The global challenges of terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, hunger, disease, and poverty require multilateral responses and initiatives. The United States should therefore take every opportunity to help strengthen global institutions and alliances, including the UN.... No international conflict is simple or easy to deal with, but each requires attention and the United Nations is the only international organization that can help bring the consensus that is indispensable in finding solutions and resolving crises.
Chuck Hagel is a threat to America's strength and safety, and his nomination must be defeated.
Take Action!
We need you to keep up pressure on your Senators whether they are conservative or liberal - all need to hear from you! Please take a moment to e-mail and call your Senators. Senators are in their home districts until Monday, February 25th, so please contact the district offices today and tomorrow. Here is a link to the Senate directory that will take you to your Senators' home websites. Their district office phone numbers are listed on these websites.

President Obama's nominee to be the next CIA Director, John Brennan, believes that we are NOT at war with violent jihad. Brennan should try telling that to the terrorists killing Americans who believe they are in a violent jihad against us.
If we don't recognize why our enemies are killing us, as Brennan does not, how can we possibly defeat them?

Inhofe lobbies senators to block Hagel again By Jeremy Herb
The top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee is calling for Republican senators to block former Sen. Chuck Hagel's (R-Neb.) confirmation once again when the Senate returns next week.
Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) sent a "dear colleague" letter to senators Thursday lobbying for them to vote against cloture on Hagel, saying that voting to end debate is the equivalent of voting to confirm Hagel for the top Pentagon post.

New Hagel controversies cloud confirmation prospects
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will continue to press for a final vote on this controversial nomination next week when the Senate returns from recess. The drum beat against Chuck Hagel's bid to become secretary of defense has increased in volume with each passing day. Here is a round-up of the top stories:
Pressure is mounting on the White House: Democrats ask White House to pull Hagel
15 GOP Senators ask Obama to withdraw Hagel nomination
More damaging Hagel statements come to light: Hagel said Israel is headed toward apartheid
Hagel said America is not "fair and credible" in the Mideast because it "tilted very much to the Israeli side on settlements"
Hagel withholds access to video and transcripts from controversial speeches:
Despite controversy, Hagel's archives are sealed
Hagel stonewalls on archive access
RJC continues to speak out and other Jewish groups chime in:
Schumer claimed that not a single major Jewish organization opposes Hagel... [and ignored] the Republican Jewish Coalition's nonstop lobbying against Hagel...

This Local Gun Ad Was Banned By Comcast - And We Found It's a New Widespread Policy
Feb. 19, 2013
In this Thursday, July 26, 2012 file photo, an AR-15 style rifle is displayed at the Firing-Line indoor range and gun shop in Aurora, Colo. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)
Comcast, which recently acquired NBC Universal, has quietly decided to remove advertisements promoting firearms from its cable network, and gun retailers aren't happy about it.
A Michigan company that handles the advertising for Michigan-based Williams Gun Sight and Outfitters contacted TheBlaze regarding the change, stunned that it couldn't re-air a commercial they played last fall due to the new policy.
John Kupiec, president of the advertising agency Canadian American Corp., told us over the phone Monday that when they recently tried to buy ad time, a Comcast representative informed them that as of February 8 of this year, the network would no longer accept advertising from companies promoting firearms or fireworks on any network, during any time period.
"They've been a longtime advertiser [but] they said it doesn't matter who they are," Kupiec related, "if they sell firearms they will not be allowed to advertise firearms on their airwaves."
He noted that the change doesn't just impact local companies, but business like Cabela's, Walmart, and others.

The Next Sunrise -- The Light of Liberty
Illegitimi non Carborundum!
By Mark Alexander · February 21, 2013
"No morn ever dawned more favorable than ours did; and no day was every more clouded than the present! Wisdom, and good examples are necessary at this time to rescue the political machine from the impending storm." --George Washington (1786)
Dawn or Dusk?
From our family home in the mountains of East Tennessee, a sunrise has many of the qualities of a sunset. Indeed, when looking at a photograph of light over the Smoky Mountains, it can be difficult to discern whether it's dawn or dusk. That's in the eye of the beholder.
I enjoy both the morning and evening skies, but I'm a "sunrise" person. I live in anticipation of the light of the next sunrise, not the darkness of the last sunset.
I inherited that propensity from my father, tempered as a child of the Great Depression and a Naval Aviator during World War II. After the war, he returned home to grow a small business through innovation, dedication and hard work, and he raised a family through the turbulence of the '60s and the malaise of the '70s. He's in retirement now -- more active than many half his age -- and he celebrates his 90th birthday in two weeks.
My father has seen the best and worst of times. Given the wisdom of age, he clearly acknowledges the current threats to Liberty and the challenges facing our generation. He saw similar threats and challenges from FDR's New Deal and LBJ's Great Society. But his concern about the current manifestation of socialist ideology notwithstanding, he is an eternal optimist -- living for every new dawn, every rising sun.
In my line of work -- as an analyst of political, social and economic trends, and a forecaster of their consequences -- sometimes it's difficult to hold fast to the "sunrise" perspective. But I can't help but see opportunity in any crisis, including the present. In addition to this predisposition for optimism, I'm also grateful for the example set by another eternal optimist and mentor, Ronald Reagan.
I wasn't around for the New Deal, of course, and I recall little of the Great Society years, but I do clearly recall the Great Malaise of the 1970s, with high unemployment and interest rates to match, runaway inflation, energy shortages, menacing threats from abroad, and a president who, though a man of good character, was wholly unequipped to handle the job. Then came President Reagan, who ably led our nation's about face, restored our national dignity, and seeded the longest economic expansion in history.
Ronald Reagan was a sunrise president. He heralded Morning in America. He focused on all that was good and right with America, the bright days ahead. In his farewell address, he assured, "America's best days are yet to come. Our proudest moments are yet to be. Our most glorious achievements are just ahead."
Reagan's spirit shines today in stark contrast to the darkness our adversaries promote. They appeal to the worst in their constituents -- their fears, doubts, greed, envy, brokenness, pessimism and dependence on the state.
Indeed, light is the mark of Liberty while darkness is the result of statism. But a physicist will tell you that darkness does not exist -- it is only the absence of light. So it is with the hearts and minds of men.

We can assume that our new Secretary of State is not a science whiz. Nevertheless, Mr. Kerry is apparently certain that anthropogenic global warming is a great danger to the human race and should be the object of a major international effort. It is a dangerous moment we are at in our society when politicians attempt to make policy based on technological and scientific issues for which they have no discernible preparation or understanding.
To put it another way, "It's nice to elect the right people, but that's not the way you solve things. The way you solve things is by making it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right things." | | TOP STORIES ON PJ MEDIA |

Obama Solicits Stories of "Gun Violence"
Posted: 21 Feb 2013 11:02 AM PST
(John Hinderaker)
To further his gun-ban efforts, President Obama is using his permanent campaign organization, Organizing For Action, to solicit stories about "gun violence." Some of the stories are no doubt sincere, some-since they are anonymous-are likely fabricated, and some are merely political, like this one from "Keith K.":
As a high school teacher, my students ask me why their lives are not as important as an NRA money. "that's just the way it is" is a terrible answer to have to give kids. so we can make a rational decision about guns.
Is he really a high school teacher? I hope not.
OFA posters don't necessarily have any idea what they are talking about. Matt W. writes:
Given the increase in gun violence and mass shootings in the last two decades it seems unbelievable that we can't agree on some form of legislation to monitor and regulate the purchase and use of firearms.
Actually, homicides, and homicides using firearms, have been cut almost in half in the last 20 years. And there is already an enormous amount of "legislation to monitor and regulate the purchase and use of firearms" at both the state and federal levels.
I wondered whether Obama had gotten any gun stories from my home state of South Dakota, where just about everybody is armed. Despite all those guns, so far there is only one, from "Jared L.":
Living in South Dakota I have the luxury of enjoying a lifestyle free from fear of violence as many inner-city neighborhoods experience on a daily basis. I also have the luxury of having grown up on strong traditions which includes hunting and know what it takes to be a responsible gun owner and say definitively that what we need in this country to reduce gun violence isn't needless legislation, but a comprehensive approach that examines whether or not current laws are being properly enforced, digging into the underlying issues that lead to increases in violence, and a focus on providing adequate healthcare coverage to those with mental health issues so that no one seeking help is turned away at the door when the clock hits 5PM. This is the approach that will have the greatest impact on violence in our country, everyone needs to be sure to let their legislatures know that this is the approach to reduce violence in our communities.
Sensible thoughts, but probably not quite what Obama had in mind. It would be nice if lots of gun owners submitted "gun stories" to the OFA site. Who knows, the liberals who frequent that site might actually learn something.
The Democrats must know that they have zero chance of getting a gun ban through Congress; they probably can't even get it through the Democratic Senate. So what is the point of this kind of effort? Like so much that the Obama administration does, it is not intended to achieve any practical goal, but rather is designed to keep the party's base in a state of hysteria to maximize turnout in 2014. A perpetual campaign with no apparent objective other than to achieve perpetual power; that is today's Democratic Party.

Markey's Malarkey
Posted: 21 Feb 2013 11:02 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
Ed Markey
Massachusett's Democratic Rep. Edward Markey is currently a front-runner to succeed John Kerry in the Senate from the Bay State, and he's perhaps the only candidate who can make Elizabeth Warren seem intelligent and probative by comparison. I've always thought Markey's advocacy of low-wattage light bulbs is obviously congruent with his low-wattage intellect, and who can resist thinking of him as Rep. Malarkey? He's one of those kind of politicians who will say anything to try to win the day.
Markey has always hated all fossil fuels, and is the kind of person who has said many times that we need more wind and solar to help get us off foreign oil (there is zero connection between the two), but a few days ago he said that one problem with the sequester is that it would . . . slow domestic oil and gas drilling! And we're really supposed to take this guy seriously? If he meant that, you'd think he'd be for the sequester.
But Malarkey has now outdone himself, comparing the Citizens United decision to Dred Scott. Great Scott!! "The Constitution must be amended," Markey said; "The Dred Scott decision had to be repealed, we have to repeal Citizens United." GOP spokesman Brad Dayspring had a good reply:
"Out-of-touch statements like these simply reinforce the fact that Ed Markey has been hibernating in Washington back rooms since Carlton Fisk was behind the plate for the Red Sox and disco ruled the world. If Ed Markey really believes this to be the modern equivalent to slavery, he'll quickly return the millions that he's raised from PACs over his career."
It should be understood, however, that the Left's outrage over Citizens United actually goes far beyond the old-fashioned, and not entirely unreasonable, concern about the potential corruption involved with large campaign contributions (though for the record I think this is overblown: whenever anyone is ever challenged to connect a single changed congressional vote to campaign cash, the response is always chirping crickets). Markey is not the first lefty to compare Citizens United to Dred Scott; his usage just shows he gets all of his ideas second hand. Beyond campaign cash, the Citizens United outrage is connected to the larger Marcusian/Chomskyite critique of "corporate control" of media. In other words, public opinion is "enslaved" by the corporate control of mass media, just like Dred Scott, QED. The Left's remedy would involve not just government control of campaign finance, but "redistribution" of free speech rights and mass media. The inimitable Cass Sunstein explicitly calls for this in his book Democracy and the Problem of Free Speech. In other words, get ready to be forced to watch Amy Goodman on "Democracy NOW" TV. Can't wait for that blessed day.
I doubt Markey has much of a clue about the deeper background of the Left's thought on this subject. Perhaps he should be asked about whether he thinks the government should "redistribute" speech rights along the lines Sunstein suggests. I imagine the answer will be occasion for further hilarious Malarkey.

A fitting legacy for John McCain
Posted: 21 Feb 2013 09:04 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
The Washington Post (per Jason Horowitz) makes John McCain an offer he's unlikely to refuse and, in fact, has already accepted:
McCain's most probable avenue back to the land of mavericks and media adulation runs through immigration reform. The Republican base may hate him for it, but the country and a GOP whose unpopularity with Hispanic voters has prompted an existential crisis may end up owing him, as they say in Senate parlance, a debt of gratitude.
That's a shameless piece of advocacy journalism even taking into account that it appears in the Style section of the Post, the left-most precinct of a left-wing newspaper.
But a path to citizenship for ten million or so illegal aliens would, indeed, be a fitting legacy for John McCain. For it eventually would mean the demise of American conservatism as we know it and, quite possibly, a split of the Republican Party.

Signs of intelligent life in the House
Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:22 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
I have it on excellent authority that, with the sequester looming, House Republicans will pass a bill to provide the various federal departments and agencies with the power to prioritize where cuts go in each organization. The total amount of cuts within a department or agency would be the same, but the cuts could be made on a more rational basis.
I've been advocating this sort of legislation for some time. It has two virtues. From a policy standpoint, it will improve the sequester (if that's what we end up with) by making it less of a blunt instrument.
From a political standpoint, it improves the Republicans' position. Senate Democrats and President Obama will push for alternative legislation that substitutes higher taxes (through the elimination of some deductions) for a significant amount of the spending cuts. When this legisation fails to get off the ground, the Dems will accuse Republicans of forcing draconian cuts in services in order to protect the rich. And the charge will carry force.
But having passed legislation that allows flexibility in the cuts, and having seen that legislation die in the Senate, Republicans will have a forceful charge of their own. They can point out that the Democrats are so opposed to spending cuts that they refused to accept a compromise that would have enabled the government to function better. And when this or that public inconvenience arises, Republcans can attribute it to the Democrats' unwillingness to adopt legislation that could have prevented it.
It's possible that, in a pinch, the Democrats might agree to legislation giving the government flexibility in making cuts. If so, great - we'll get spending cuts that may tend to be more rational.
If inconveniences arise nonetheless, the Dems will say they did everything they could to prevent this, but the cuts are just too deep to manage. Republicans will counter that the cuts are only around 6 percent, and that, with competent management, the inconvenience in question could have been avoided. This debate would probably be a draw.
I'm also informed that after the House passes its sequester legislation, it will move quickly to pass its budget resolution, doing so before end of March. This would be earlier than required, and earlier than ever before. In addition, there apparently is a strategy in place to deal with the debt ceiling and the continuing resolution, though I haven't heard what that strategy is.
The good news is that, if what I'm hearing is true, the House is thinking strategically and, it seems, soundly about how to conduct the ongoing battle royale over the budget and the debt. Let's hope so, for we know that Obama and the Senate Dems are.

Leverett's lesson

(Scott Johnson)
Steve recently recalled the name of former Massachusetts Senator Leverett Saltonstall with fondness. Steve's recollection prompted this first-hand account by attorney and Power Line reader Bill Levin in which Saltonstall, or at least one of his life lessons, makes a cameo appearance:
It is not every day that you get to share a Leverett Saltonstall story involving Eliot Richardson and Judge Bork. During the Bork confirmation hearings, working in the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel under Chuck Cooper and Mike Carvin, I reviewed Judge Bork's Watergate-era history. While it is widely known that Judge Bork fired Archibald Cox, it is practically unknown that Eliot Richardson, before resigning as Attorney General, called Bob to his office to beg him to perform his constitutional duty of firing an executive branch officer pursuant to the President's lawful direction. Otherwise, argued Richardson, there would be a true constitutional crisis. The story of the meeting was told to us in vivid detail by Judge Bork. It was confirmed in discussions with Eliot Richardson during our interviews related to the nomination process. Shamefully, Eliot Richardson never came forward publicly, when it mattered at the time or in subsequent historical accounts, to absolve Judge Bork of his supposed infamy in executing the Saturday Night Massacre. At the same time, all those years later, Richardson agreed to testify in favor of Judge Bork's nomination before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Which brings us to Leverett Saltonstall. I am standing alone with Eliot Richardson off-stage as he is about to be called to testify. Richardson is, to put it charitably, in a rambling mood, not at all eager to focus, or be focused, on the events and chronology of the long passed Watergate era. He turns to me and says, apropos of nothing, "It reminds of old Leverett Saltonstall. He taught me you can go right to the line, but you cannot cross it." There was no obvious response, but there was true dread that he was about to give incoherent testimony. Leave it to the old pros. Richardson marches off to the witness chair and, with the cameras rolling, shakes off the cobwebs and gives dead perfect testimony. Perfect in every respect, except one. Even then, he did not publicly disclose his role in the firing of Archibald Cox.
Thanks to Mr. Levin for permission to publish his recollection.

Why Celebrate Washington's Birthday?
This column by former federal judge and ACRU policy board member Richard Bender Abell was published in the Mount Vernon Gazette
A great nation - a great democracy - needs heroes to set an example - a paradigm for conduct, a coalescence of our own defining traits.
Currently we live in an anti-heroic age. Egalitarianism presides. The great American Revolution was about Liberty - not egalitarianism. The latter was part and parcel of the French and Soviet Revolutions. We sought Liberty as God given - Liberty under God; the French and the Soviets sought freedom from God. Their legacy is that of a hecatomb of death and violence.
To be subordinate to God suggests inequality. Despots have always understood this. Despots have always sought to banish God from the social equation. If there is no personal God, then we can all be ideologically equivalent and if we are all the same then the concept of the heroic ... or the inexplicable appearance of great men and women in history, is an inconsistent chink in the armor of the Brave New World--the hydra head of collectivism. It would be an admission that some men are simply unlike others; that some men are different.

The Kidnapping Lobby Is at It Again
This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published February 18, 2013 on The Washington Times website.
What's the real message behind Barack Obama's call in his State of the Union speech for taxpayer-funded "universal" preschool and his trip to a Georgia preschool last Thursday for photo ops?
It's that the government wants to get its hands on our children even earlier.
From the time children are 5 or 6 years old up through their senior year of high school, government schools run by left-wing teachers' unions have them at least seven hours a day, five days a week during most of the year.

Lars Larson: MO Gun Control Proposal Raises Constitutional Problems
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published February 16, 2013 on Breitbart.com.
Missouri Democrats are trying to join New York, California, and Illinois as states that oppose gun rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. National talk-radio host Lars Larson--who is not a lawyer--understands the relevant provisions of the Constitution better than many lawyers I know.
One television personality referred to the proposed Missouri ban as going after assault weapons and guns with assault-weapon features. That's half-right: there is no such thing as an assault weapon; it's not a class of firearms. It's a made-up term by anti-gun politicians to scare ordinary Americans into thinking there is some evil type of firearms that must be banned.

Federal Court Dismisses Lawsuit against Ten Commandments Display
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published February 15, 2013 on Breitbart.com.
The Ten Commandments won in federal court this week in Dixie County, FL, which adopted a policy that allows any of its citizens to erect a display atop the county courthouse's steps. A local Christian man paid to put a six-ton (12,000 lbs.) stone Ten Commandments display there in 2006.
The ACLU sued on behalf of an anonymous North Carolina ACLU member who said he planned to buy property in that area and had to see the display when he went to the county courthouse. Some doubted his claimed intentions, as there was little evidence to support the idea that he seriously planned on making such a purchase.

Thursday, February 21, 2013 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer So Much For "Universal" Coverage Socialized medicine, with the promise of universal healthcare coverage, is the crown jewel of the left's big government agenda. In 2007, as he was preparing his campaign for the presidency, Barack Obama told a union convention, "We can have universal health care by ... by the end of my first term." Obamacare did not achieve universal coverage by 2012. In fact, it is costing more and more people the coverage they currently have. Tuesday we told you that the CEO of Kroger grocery stores acknowledged that his company was contemplating dropping its health insurance because of Obamacare. This week it was reported that Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, will no longer be offering health insurance to its part-time employees as of December 31st of this year. Why not? According to the Orlando Sentinel, the policy Universal offered its part-time employees "will no longer be permitted under the federal Affordable Care Act." Let me repeat that so no one is confused or tempted to blame "corporate greed" for hurting the "little guy." According to the Orlando Sentinel, the policy Universal offered its part-time employees "will no longer be permitted under the federal Affordable Care Act." As many as 500 Universal employees stand to lose their current health insurance because of Obamacare. The Sentinel also reports that Walt Disney World is currently evaluating the impact on its 1,400 part-time employees who currently have health insurance policies that will be banned by Obamacare. This is happening all over the country, and, again, it's not because of "evil" Big Business. Small businesses and the self-employed are getting slammed too. This week I received the following email from a supporter:
"Dear Mr. Bauer, I just wanted to let you know that my husband and I have recently received a termination letter from our insurance company. We are self-employed and are covered by private insurance... The letter stated they will no longer be offering our plan in California and suggested we sign up in October with a state exchange. Nice, huh? What happened to "If you like your health plan you can keep it"?
As time goes on and the onerous burdens of Obamacare increase, remind your friends and family members that it was Obama and his party that created this mess. Remember that when it comes time to go to the polls in 2014. Obamacare's "Death Spiral" Many conservatives warned that Obamacare would not work. Even liberals complained it did not go far enough. Some have speculated that it may have been designed to fail, setting up the left to push for its real goal -- a single-payer, socialized system -- when it finally collapses. In that same 2007 speech, Barack Obama also said, "I don't think we're going to be able to eliminate employer coverage immediately. There's going to be potentially some transition process." Obamacare is that "transition process." A column this week in Investor's Business Daily explains why. Obamacare is actually making private health insurance more expensive, dramatically so for younger workers, and creating a "death spiral" for the private insurance industry. Consider these excerpts:
"But as ObamaCare's official launch date approaches, even its backers are beginning to admit that the law could actually create powerful incentives for millions of people and thousands of businesses to drop their coverage, despite the mandate. There is growing concern, for example, that the law's market reforms will cause a huge 'rate shock,' particularly for those young and healthy. "A February survey of major health insurance companies in five cities across the country found that they expect premiums for this group to climb an average 169%. Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini said late last year that he expects premiums to double for some small businesses and some individuals as a result of the law. ... "The problem is that if the young and healthy drop coverage, the result would be what the industry calls a 'death spiral.' Premiums will climb as the pool of insured gets sicker, causing still more to cancel their policies."
As insurance costs skyrocket and more and more Americans remain uninsured, Democrats will never admit they were wrong about Obamacare. The left will simply contend that it wasn't allowed to go far enough, and the push for a full-fledged socialized healthcare system as the only alternative will begin in earnest. Cornyn To Obama: Withdraw Hagel Kudos to Senator John Cornyn (R-TX). Senator Cornyn sent a letter to President Obama today urging him to withdraw the nomination of Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense. Contrasting the Senate's unanimous support for current Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Senator Cornyn noted that it would be "unprecedented for a Secretary of Defense to take office without the broad base of bipartisan support." Cornyn also slammed Hagel's performance at his confirmation hearing as "deeply concerning, leading to serious doubts about his basic competence." You can read the letter here. Senator Cornyn's letter was signed by fourteen of his GOP colleagues: Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jim Risch (R-ID), Dan Coats (R-IN), David Vitter (R-LA), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Tom Coburn (R-OK), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Tim Scott (R-SC), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Lee (R-UT), Ron Johnson (R-WI) and John Barrasso (R-WY).

How to Fix the Medicare Physician Payment Problem
The congressional formula that determines the annual Medicare payment update for physicians, the sustainable growth rate (SGR), was supposed to cut Medicare doctors' pay each year starting in 2002. But that congressional formula is so flawed and unworkable that every year since 2003, Congress has stepped in to stop it from going into effect. In 2013, without another congressional "doc fix," the physicians would have had a pay cut of 26.5 percent.
The formula is called the sustainable growth rate because it links Medicare physician pay increases to the performance of the general economy, not to the market-based conditions of supply and demand that would determine the price of medical services. So if Medicare physcians' pay in any given year rises faster than economic growth, then their pay is automatically reduced the following year.
There's an added dimension to this problem: Every year the pay cut is delayed, the size of the cut the following year is bigger.
So, instead of abolishing the formula, Congress sets off an annual panic among Medicare physicians. It's a classic example of the fundamental foolishness of imposing administrative prices, plus price controls, that are divorced from economic reality. The annual congressional panic is proof that this approach doesn't work.
Any repeal of the SGR should be replaced by a rational payment system. The best payment system would reflect the competitive structural reform that Medicare desperately needs- defined contribution (or "premium support"). What should Congress do to fix Medicare? >> |

Honoring the Courage of Fatherhood by Derrick Morgan, Vice President, Domestic and Economic Policy The most fundamental form of government is the family and it is falling apart. Americans across the political spectrum are beginning to recognize it. President Barack Obama, in this year's State of the Union address, said he wanted to work to "strengthen families by removing the financial deterrents to marriage for low-income couples, and doing more to encourage fatherhood - because what makes you a man isn't the ability to conceive a child; it's having the courage to raise one." He is exactly right. Obama's own marriage, of course, provides a shining example of a strong family. But he comes from a broken family himself, and knows what it is to have an absent father. Until recent human history, the vast majority of children lived with their fathers.
Today, according to the Family Research Council's Marriage and Religion Research Institute, less than half of 17-year-olds have always lived with their intact biological family. Shockingly, that figure is only 17 percent for African-Americans, compared to 1941 when it was 90 percent. For the vast majority of those not living in intact families, their biological father is gone. As Robert Rector of The Heritage Foundation has shown, the best anti-poverty program is marriage: When a child's father is married to his mother, the probability of the child's living in poverty drops by 82 percent. Absent fathers don't just harm their children economically. A father's influence on children is documented and widely accepted. Adolescents without dads in their lives tend to exhibit more anti-social behavior. To be blunt, they get into trouble. Social science indicates that fathers play a different and complementary role to mothers in raising children, particularly sons. All of this is not to blame single mothers, many of whom are doing the best they can under difficult circumstances. They would be the first to say how tough it is to go it alone. Again, the president's life story is an example of escape from the disadvantages of broken families. It is especially important for civil society groups, congregations and extended families to do their best to support single parents. Mentoring from older men can be a great encouragement to young men whose fathers aren't around. Instead of relying on backup plans, though, we'd all be better off with more fathers and intact families. Those of us who are fathers must realize we are the first line of defense and, along with our wives, the most important people in the lives of our children. If American culture doesn't honor the role of fathers, young people won't understand the importance of young men growing up in responsibility - and young women won't understand what to look for in a mate. Rather than honoring fatherhood, though, too often our society minimizes the importance of fathers in the home. So much so that a live-in dad is seen, at best, as optional. Over time, what President Obama calls the courage of fatherhood could inspire generations of young men to make family a central part of their goals, hopes and dreams. Even as TV and other aspects of pop culture belittle or ignore the importance of fathers, though, America's parents, educators and other cultural leaders should explain why dads are so invaluable. Why a Car Commercial Can Make You Cry
Is there a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces in your life? If so, tears likely came to your eyes when you saw Jeep's Super Bowl commercial. Oprah Winfrey's voice-over was a moving tribute to those who fight for us: "In your home, in our hearts-you've been missed. You've been needed. You've been cried for, prayed for." For those of us who have had loved ones in harm's way in Iraq, Afghanistan, or other overseas bases in the past few years, the ad acknowledged that desire above all others: to bring them home safely. "When you're home, we're more than a family. We are a nation that is whole again." Our 22 million veterans are indeed part of the whole that is America. But after they've gone through hell on the battlefield, they come home-and then what? Home looks different from the home they left. After seeing what they've seen, feeling what they've felt-they will never be the same again. At Heritage's Bloggers Briefing this week, Colonel David W. Sutherland, U.S. Army (Ret.), talked about that difficult transition from fighting for his life in Iraq to driving calmly down a road in Texas. >>> Watch Col. Sutherland describe the experience of saying things your family doesn't understand Col. Sutherland, executive director of the Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Community Services, was introducing the audience to the driving force behind a new documentary called Veteran Nation that seeks to empower Americans to support service members at home. "There is an overarching desire by the American people to want to help," he said. "They just don't know how. And it's this film, the understanding of how, that builds public awareness." If you search for an organization that helps veterans, you can find 400,000 websites. So where do you start? Both the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs have concluded that linking those who want to help with veterans and their families is the single greatest and most important challenge they face. That's where Veteran Nation comes in-to educate people on these efforts and prompt discussions of where each of us can fit in. Sutherland said these connections are important because this support and integration is an undertaking for communities, not the government:
I fought for my family, my neighbors, my community, and my buddies on my left and my right. And I come home to my family, my neighbors, my community. I look for new buddies on my left and my right, and I don't come home to big-government organizations. And that recognition, that ability to articulate that, is told so well in Veteran Nation.
The film is a 30-minute documentary that goes inside the war stories-and the homecomings-of our fighting men and women. It was produced by filmmakers at ColdWater Media and by volunteers from Esprit de Corps, a non-profit group led by Heritage's vice president for foreign policy, James Jay Carafano. Carafano, a West Point graduate, is a 25-year Army veteran who rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel, serving in Europe, Korea, and the United States. He was inspired to make Veteran Nation after learning about a group in Bozeman, Montana, that provides a healing environment for wounded service members. Warriors and Quiet Waters uses its community's resources-in this case, fly fishing-to connect veterans with each other and support them. "While not every town in America is blessed with rivers and scenery like in the movie A River Runs Through It, every town could muster what it does best to serve those who served," Carafano has said. "All it takes is a commitment of contact, comradeship, and community to make a difference." Today, The Heritage Foundation will host a screening of Veteran Nation. But this is just the beginning-the movie was made to send into communities across the country. Esprit de Corps will provide you with a DVD of the film if you would like to host a screening wherever you are. Please visit www.servingourvets.org for information.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 21, 2013
McIlhinney Bill Would Require Financial Transparency of Political Party Leaders
HARRISBURG -- Statewide and county political party officers would be subject to greater transparency under legislation introduced by Sen. Chuck McIlhinney (R-10).
McIlhinney's legislation would require any individual who holds a statewide or county political party office of chairman, vice chairman, secretary or treasurer to file a Statement of Financial Interests with the state Ethics Commission. The statements must include all direct or indirect sources of income, gifts received, creditors, transportation and lodging expenses, as well as all real estate, financial and transferred business interests.
Elected officials, candidates for public office, political subdivision solicitors, public officials and many state employees are already required to file a Statement of Financial Interests under current law.
"The General Assembly has made significant strides in improving oversight and accountability of the use of tax dollars, but very little has been done to provide transparency of the political system," McIlhinney said. "A stronger system of checks and balances is needed to ensure these individuals cannot abuse their power as political leaders."
McIlhinney introduced similar legislation during the previous legislative session, but noted that action on his proposal is even more urgent in light of recent allegations of improper conduct by the Bucks County Republican Party Chairman.
"County and statewide political party officers can wield a tremendous amount of power and influence without the slightest hint of accountability," McIlhinney said. "Disclosing the financial interests of party leaders is one of the surest ways to prevent them from overstepping their authority."
