Quote:
"If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenue and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute."
~ Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791

Filibuster Hagel
If Republicans refuse, they won't be standing on principle but capitulating to the president.
Chuck Hagel says he can't remember if he called the U.S. State Department "an adjunct of the Israeli foreign minister's office" in the Q&A following a March 2007 speech at Rutgers University, but that he repudiates the words all the same. Which makes him a crank who lacks even the courage of his convictions.
And he's going to be the next U.S. secretary of defense?
Lest readers miss Mr. Hagel's idea of a literary allusion, it's to Pat Buchanan's 1990 outburst that the U.S. Congress was "Israeli-occupied territory." At least Pitchfork Pat had a point in the sense that the Congress is overwhelmingly pro-Israel. Calling the State Department an adjunct of the Israeli foreign ministry is like accusing the BBC of a pro-Israel bias: The only people who think that are the ones who find Al Jazeera too mild for their tastes.
By now, Mr. Hagel's habit of pulling Buchanans when it comes to the subject of Israel isn't exactly news. Still, there's an unappreciated irony in having him accuse the Israelis of excessive influence-peddling in Washington when he was giving a speech under the auspices of Iranian influence peddlers.

Gun Manufacturers Refuse To Sell To Government Agencies
For months, we've been showing the hypocrisy of the left when it comes to guns. They don't want guns for citizens to protect themselves, but they want guns for police, government officials and bodyguards. And no one can justify having an AR-15. Even though it is only a semi-automatic weapon like most handguns, they look scary, and therefore should not be accessible to citizens. Police and military, sure, but not oridinary people.
Well, it looks like those restrictions are backfiring. Six firearms manufacturers are fed up with these gun control laws around the country, and they've made announcements stating that they will no longer be selling their products to any government agency within a jurisdiction that restricts firearms from citizens.

'Orwellian': Proposed Gun Law in Washington State Calls on Police to Inspect the Homes of 'Assault Weapon' Owners
The Blaze | Jason Howerton | Feb. 18, 2013 5:35pm
With each proposed anti-gun bill put forth by Democrats across the U.S., the demands appear to be getting more and more restrictive on gun owners. While the Obama administration pushes for a ban on so-called "assault weapons" and universal background checks, Democrats in both California and Missouri have proposed legislation that would result in possible confiscation of semi-automatic rifles.
Now, Democratic lawmakers in Olympia, Wash. last week introduced legislation that would allow county sheriffs to inspect the homes of semi-automatic rifle owners once a year. Seattle Times columnist Danny Westneat describes the move as "Orwellian."
. . .
"I'm a liberal Democrat - I've voted for only one Republican in my life," Palmer added. "But now I understand why my right-wing opponents worry about having to fight a government takeover."

Like stray dogs drawn to an open sewer, after a bitter election, the Democrats and Republicans have found themselves drawn together to illegal alien amnesty. Amnesty has an obvious appeal for both Democrats and Republicans. It's a means of putting a lot of cheap votes on the table. The Democrats have been using immigrants as cheap votes before the invention of the telephone. And the Republicans think that they can begin scoring 39 percent of the Hispanic vote in all their elections again without considering what 11 percent of 11 million will do to their margins in even the reddest red states. Big business has always supported cheap labor, which is why the Republican establishment has always been eager to dash away from its base to back the latest amnesty gimmick. Illegal alien amnesty however is even more damaging to the voting base for the Democrats, but that hasn't stopped the AFL-CIO and the NAACP, organizations whose members will take a severe beating from an illegal alien amnesty, from joining the amnesty parade. After a decade, illegal alien amnesty that leads to citizenship and family reunification will kill the ability of the Republican Party to win national elections. But it will also kill the ability of black men under 30 to find a job. Black unemployment is already staggeringly high and throwing in millions of new low-skilled workers will make urban centers more blighted and dangerous than they are now. But nobody in D.C. cares about that, even though many of the blighted neighborhoods are not all that far away from the gilded centers of power.

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
|
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
- Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
- Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

Important Announcement from SFL
|
You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.
Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.
I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.
Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".
Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.
Click here to read my blog post on the SFL website about our first DVD.

Saturday Workout with Dom
Rescheduled
February 23, 12-2 PM (details below)
Open to Association Members and Friends
February 18, 2013, 8 PM
Dear Members and Friends,
Saturday's Dom Giordano Listener Luncheon at Anna's Deli was a huge success. Several hundred listeners from the Delaware Valley celebrated the triumph of justice over evil, including Association members and friends
Chris Hill, Joe Salwinski, Lin DeCesare, Carol and Jerry Klein, Don Adams, and Teri Adams.
Photos courtesy of Jerry Klein
The luncheon demonstrated our support for Deli owners, John and Anna Kukiv, who defended themselves and their property from an armed robber. Mr. Kukiv fatally shot the thief, who fired first on Mr. Kukiv's wife, Anna.

In other news, Senator John 'Predictable' McCain and his side-kick, Senator Lindsey Graham, announced during separate appearances on the Sunday Talk Show circuit that they would be voting to end the filibuster of Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary when the Senate reconvenes on February 26.
This will give the Democrats the 60 votes they need to end the filibuster which threatened Hagel's nomination.
While McCain and Graham will ultimately vote against the Hagel nomination, they, along with colleagues Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mike Johanns, and Thad Cochran, will be responsible for the simple majority
up or down vote that will confirm Hagel.
Please call the Capitol Switchboard @ 202.224.3121 and tell these Senators to sto the President and Hagel by voting to keep the filibuster alive.
In other news, it was reported that (surprise) New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg will be retiring in 2014. We should urge scandal-ridden Senator Bob Menendez, also of New Jersey, to retire immediately.
T-Survey on Gun Control, Immigration, Sequestration, and the 2016 Presidential Race

Hello Patriots on this Day!
We need to make daily calls to Washington to stop infringement on our 2nd Amendment rights!!

Rep. Bob Brady 610-874-7094
Important Dates:
- February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
- February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
- March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
- April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.
Any questions, holler.

Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
- You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
- I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.

Subject: Great Sources of information---Please keep in folder.
From a Fellow Patriot that was kind enough to put this together.
I spoke with someone recently regarding web sites/groups and subscriptions to information/news feeds. This is a listing of many such which may be of use to folks. The number of emails can get overwhelming at times, so check out the sites and see what suits your need. I recommend, though to be sure to subscribe to at least #1 Tea Party Patriots and #2 Americans for Prosperity. Groups/web sites for keeping up on issues, events, etc. 1. Tea Party Patriots (National) http://www.teapartypatriots.org Dot's note ► From this site, you can get to state and local group sites. Basically, this is our "Home page" for information on the national level. Great site to keep up with issues within the "realm" of the Tea Party's core values: Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets and constitutionally limited Government. They have many citizen journalists who contribute. Also, information on events, etc. From the site: ABOUT TEA PARTY PATRIOTS The Tea Party movement spontaneously formed in 2009 from the reaction of the American people to fiscally irresponsible actions of the federal government, misguided "stimulus" spending, bailouts and takeovers of private industry. Within the first few weeks of the movement, Tea Party Patriots formed to support the millions of Americans seeking to improve our great nation through renewed support for fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies. Tea Party Patriots is a national grassroots organization that exists to serve and support the thousands of local organizations and millions of grassroots Patriots throughout our nation. We provide logistical, educational, networking and other support to thousands of community-based tea party groups around the country. Tea Party Patriots state and national coordinators serve your local grassroots groups, support you with the tools and technology you need to address your local issues, listen to your voices, gather your ideas, and together help shape the overall direction of our national movement. Working in a truly grassroots fashion, we have already changed the political landscape of America. TEA PARTY PATRIOTS IS 100% GRASSROOTS, 100% OF THE TIME. Tea Party Patriots is made up of, and funded by, millions of regular Americans just like you, who believe there is a better way forward for America. We are a non-profit 501(c)(4) organization that does not support any political party nor do we endorse candidates. If you support fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies, we encourage you to sign up for Tea Party Patriots today. 2. Americans for Prosperity (AFP) http://americansforprosperity.org/ Dot's note ► Great organization, super info. they sponsor/organize many events in the area and DC. Jennifer Stefano is the PA State Director. You've most likely seen her on Fox News Channel. From the web site: OUR MISSIONS Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process. AFP is an organization of grassroots leaders who engage citizens in the name of limited government and free markets on the local, state, and federal levels. AFP grassroots activists advocate for public policies that champion the principles of entrepreneurship and fiscal and regulatory restraint. To that end, AFP supports: Cutting taxes and government spending in order to halt the encroachment of government in the economic lives of citizens by fighting proposed tax increases and pointing out evidence of waste, fraud, and abuse. Removing unnecessary barriers to entrepreneurship and opportunity by sparking citizen involvement early in the regulatory process in order to reduce red tape. Restoring fairness to our judicial system. WHO WE ARE The heart and soul of AFP is our citizen activists. They organize events, write letters to the editor, and petition their lawmakers to uphold freedom and prosperity. Americans for Prosperity has more than 1,800,000 activists in all 50 states and 34 state chapters and affiliates. More than 90,000 Americans in all 50 states have made a financial contribution to AFP or our sister organization, AFP Foundation. WHAT WE DO AFP's network of organized and influential citizen leaders in a growing number of states throughout the country is working to change the nation one state at a time. AFP mobilizes citizens to effectively make their voices heard in public policy issue campaigns. AFP educates citizens about where their elected officials stand on our issues. AFP combines "best-in-class" capabilities built once at the national level with local knowledge from our state staff and on-the-ground grassroots to create economies of scale that win. AFP leverages our comparative advantages with those of other groups by building coalitions of local, state, and national grassroots organizations fighting for a common cause. 3. We are the only group with the grassroots base and the campaign expertise to make a real impact on the ground in races across the country. WHAT WE DO FreedomWorks for America utilizes its over a million-strong grassroots volunteer base to elect candidates who fight for lower taxes, less government, and more freedom. WHY WE DO IT FreedomWorks for America believes individual liberty and the freedom to compete increases consumer choices and provides individuals with the greatest control over what they own and earn. FreedomWorks for America aims to elect real champions of freedom who will stand up for these principles in the face of Washington establishment pressure, and who will be standard bearers for the grassroots to rally behind. HOW WE DO IT FreedomWorks for America's aggressive, real-time campaigns activate a growing and permanent volunteer grassroots army to show up and demand that our elected officials stand up for freedom. Hillsdale deserves the appreciation of all who labor for freedom. - Ronald Reagan
America has no better teacher on the Constitution than Hillsdale College. - Sean Hannity
We the People need to understand what it really means to be free . . . And who will teach us? You know who: Hillsdale College. - Mark Levin
Hillsdale College symbolizes everything that is good and true in America . . . [Y]ou extend to each new generation a commitment to those beliefs which the Founding Fathers enshrined at the very heart of your nation's life. - Margaret Thatcher

You are among the first in America to get this exciting news: Hillsdale College is about to begin its newest FREE online course.
I urge you to register right now, to learn what every American must know to preserve our ...
High praise for Hillsdale's Constitution courses from across America . . .
"Hillsdale's courses have re-ignited a fire in my belly for our country, freedom and ultimately the search for truth; wherever it may lead. I am urging everyone I know to take advantage of these powerful tools, especially in light of our current political and social/cultural environment." - David M. | "As a disabled Marine ... I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to expand my understanding of this great country and the document that defines and undergirds her." - DAJ |
"I have already resolved to share it [Hilldale's Constitution courses] with my children. I realize that precious freedom is in grave jeopardy and the only way for it to be sustained for my children is to actively defend it against all enemies of liberty. Please continue the efforts of restoring our constitutional heritage . . ."
- Mark W.
| "I have been teaching social studies for twenty years and I wish I could require all of my students to take this course. The history taught in most of our schools and universities today is so slanted toward the progressive agenda. It is great to be able to get the other side of the story from Hillsdale." - Loren W. | "As a United States Marine no longer on active duty, I want to say thank you for helping us defend and spread the incredible vision of the Founders . . . Hillsdale has and will always have my continuing support and gratitude! God bless you all. Semper Fi" - Robert D. | "Hillsdale, your work has just started. You are doing an excellent job and we are thirsting for more." - Brian V. | "I am a high school, homeschooled, senior who took [the Constitution course] for this semester, and I really enjoyed it. I only took the final quiz once and got a 39/40, so obviously you do a great job with the lectures. Thank you . . ." - Jordan L. | "I learned more about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Founders' wisdom, and the 'Progressive' views . . . than I did from my undergraduate and law school education. Thank you!" - William W. | "Ignorance is the enemy of a free nation, and I sincerely appreciate you offering these free courses as a way to battle it. God bless!" - Kelly E. | "As an adjunct professor of Philosophy in an aboundingly liberal secular University, I [brought] in some of these lectures to watch.... The students were respectful and listened. One said that this was the first time he had heard the 'conservative position' so well and reasonably explained. Another wished that more frank discussion on principled points could be maintained at the university instead of the politically correct suppression of ideas currently in vogue." - E M, Norfolk, VA | "Thank you, Hillsdale Collage, for this wonderful course. I am a 69-year-old veteran of the Vietnam War. I do so worry about the world today and what it is becoming." - Gary J, Arkansas | "Your Constitution lectures have been such an enrichment to me. The professors are a clear and easy to understand. I wish more people would understand the gift of liberty the Founding Fathers gave us." - Laura D. | "Overall, this course was fabulous. I enjoyed the lectures. 40 minutes is good limit ... The reading selections were again superb. The tests were fun. I'm on to Western History ... Thank you, VERY, VERY MUCH FOR DOING THIS!" - Martin M. |
I'll be teaching the first of ten classes that make up the course.. I'm eager to tell you more about this important and timely course, being offered online for the FIRST TIME - FREE!
But first, here's a fun little test for you: Which President said the following? (HINT: It was at his Second Inaugural Address.)
". . . each time we gather to inaugurate a president, we bear witness to the enduring strength of our Constitution.
"What makes us exceptional, what makes us America is our allegiance to an idea articulated in a declaration . . . We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creatorwith certain unalienable rights, and among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
"The patriots of 1776 did not fight to replace the tyranny of a king with the privileges of a few, or the rule of a mob. They gave to us a republic, a government of, and by, and for the people. Entrusting each generation to keep safe our founding creed . . ." Who comes to mind: Lincoln? Roosevelt?
Kennedy? Reagan?
Actually it's none of the above. It was Barack Obama.
Surprised?
President Obama may believe what he is saying, or he may not. That's not my point. My urgent reason for writing you today is this:
Millions of Americans are completely ignorant about the meaning behind those magnificent words - and we will lose everything we love about our country unless we correct that situation soon! Yes, ignorance threatens our priceless American heritage. Any politician can utter rhetoric like the text I quoted, while many Americans cannot discern if the actions match the words; if the actual policies of the speaker will lead to a freer, safer, more prosperous nation . . . or to a bigger, more-centralized, all-powerful bureaucratic state. To steer our nation in the right direction, Americans must once again be educated for liberty. That is why I implore you to . . .
Register for Hillsdale's new American Heritage online course RIGHT NOW!
It couldn't be easier . . . it's FREE . . . and it's filled with lessons all Americans must learn now to understand and preserve our heritage of liberty for future generations.
You will agree, I'm sure, as to the reasons why I say this outstanding course is urgently needed today:
Because so many Americans - especially young people - are dangerously close to forgetting what made this country the greatest on earth . . .
. . . our founding principles, amazing achievements, heroic deeds, and great leaders on whose shoulders we stand ...
. . . as well as our mistakes - including the dangerous course our nation is on at this very moment - which we must learn from or be doomed to repeat. So mark your calendar for Monday, February 25th! That's when the first lecture, which I deliver, will be available for your viewing. A new class follows each Monday, which we will remind you of by email.
Then prepare to be informed, challenged and inspired - and to fall in love with America all over again!
REGISTER HERE for Hilldale's FREE new course: AMERICAN HERITAGE: From Colonial Settlement to the Reagan Revolution And, remember - we archive every class so you can go back and watch at your convenience.
When you register for this new online course - American Heritage -you'll also find out how to get a copy of Hillsdale's outstanding 882-page American Heritage Reader, the companion book for the course. It's the same book our undergraduate students study, with hundreds of original historic documents - Thomas Jefferson's First Inaugural Address, former slave Frederick Douglass' Fourth of July speech, notable speeches by Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan and many more. I strongly encourage you to get your own copy.
As Rush Limbaugh says: "If you want to get the most out of Hillsdale's new course, you need to have their American Heritage Reader!"
Here at Hillsdale, we take what is happening in America today very seriously. And so we are reaching out across the nation, educating citizens to understand and defend America's founding principles and its heritage of liberty and limited government.
You and I must be equipped to defend and pass on America's heritage to our children and grandchildren . . . to prepare them to be worthy of the blessings of liberty.
Today, we are at a dangerous crossroads. Will America continue down its current path toward bureaucratic despotism? Or will we regain an appreciation for the principles of liberty and limited government?
Over 100 years of Progressive education has brought us to this place today . . . but education is also the solution!
And education - of a kind the Founders' envisioned - is what Hillsdale College has done since 1844 and continues to do today.
That is why we launched this nationwide educational outreach, including FREE online course series on America's Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and America's founding principles...
...bringing in over half a million registrants in our "virtual nationwide classroom" so far...
... and now we want to boost that to ONE MILLION well-informed Americans - including you and your loved ones!
You can help us reach that goal by
Registering for our new American Heritage course today!
As I said earlier, America is at an historic moment. All we hold dear is at stake. I believe we face a crisis similar to the one facing Abraham Lincoln some 150 years ago. His simple and beautiful words spoken at Gettysburg echo what we are facing today . . .
". . . our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
"Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure." Yes, America survived that terrible test.
But what do you think about today's test?
Do you think America can continue to endure the progressive, liberal assault on our founding principles, our history, our Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and God-given natural rights - the ideas that make our country so exceptional?
Too few Americans understand our founding principles, much less how to defend them. They don't know the stories of the sacrifices that led us to become the most powerful, prosperous and free nation in history . . . so richly blessed that all the world took notice!
That's why it's vital that all citizens be educated and equipped to understand, explain and defend why America is so exceptional . . . and what we must do to continue to enjoy the blessings of liberty.
And that is why I urge you to . . .
Register for Hillsdale's newest online course: "AMERICAN HERITAGE - From Colonial Settlement to the Reagan Revolution" You'll enjoy learning from Hillsdale's truly outstanding faculty, using the same material all Hillsdale students are required to study, regardless of their major.
Each lecture runs only about 40 minutes . . . yet they cover eternal principles and truths that have enabled America to prosper for over 235 years!
Every week you can also watch special question-and-answer sessions with the professor featured in that week's lecture. Questions from viewers like you will be selected from our online discussion board.
And yes, the lectures and Q & A sessions are free for you. As are the readings, quizzes, study guides, and other materials.
Don't have time to watch on the day the course goes online? Don't worry! We archive every class, including the Q & A sessions, so you can watch at your convenience.
So please, Sign up for this FREE online course today and learn about America's rich heritage from Colonial Settlement to the Reagan Revolution.
You will be partnering with Hillsdale College to educate Americans for liberty and self-government.
That's what we do every single day here at Hillsdale, since our own founding in 1844. That's how long we've been "pursuing truth and defending liberty" through education, in order to preserve the blessings of liberty that made America exceptional from the beginning.
In that tradition, Hillsdale College steadfastly refuses all government funding - even in the form of government grants or student loans.
That's one reason why, for many years, so many leading champions of freedom have spoken at Hillsdale events . . .
From Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and William F. Buckley, Jr. . . .
. . . to Walter Williams, Edwin Meese, George Will, Mike Pence, Michelle Malkin, Paul Ryan and so many more.
Today, Hillsdale is advancing the cause of liberty even further by enrolling over 500,000 Americans for our free online courses on the Constitution and Founding Principles . . .
. . . which, with your help, we will soon grow to ONE MILLION!
Please join that growing, nationwide classroom by Signing up for this FREE online course! The more Americans who join you in these lessons, the more Americans we equip to help us save our priceless American Heritage.
We will lose this nation if we forget our great past and our founding principles . . . if we fail to learn from the great figures on whose shoulders we stand today.
That's what the Progressive movement's assault on America and our Founders attempts to do, even today: make us forget - or even be ashamed of - our great nation. It's what they've been doing for over a century.
To preserve America's Heritage - to save what you and I love so much about our country - we must know and understand the principles of liberty that made possible the greatest country in human history.
Won't you please do your part today and Sign up for this FREE online course?
It will take all of us - you and me - working together, doing our utmost to save our constitutional republic . . .
. . . so that we preserve our priceless American Heritage for future generations!
Yours for liberty,
Larry P. Arnn President, Hillsdale College Pursuing Truth and Defending Liberty since 1844
P.S. At the end of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Benjamin Franklin was asked by a local Philadelphia woman what kind of government they had created for Americans. Franklin famously answered:
"A republic, if you can keep it."
So let me ask you as directly as I know how:
Will you do your part to help preserve our republic? Will you do your part to show the world that this nation, "conceived in liberty" and dedicated to true equality for all "can long endure"?
You can do that today when you:
Sign up for our newest FREE online course: AMERICAN HERITAGE, and see how to get Hillsdale's popular American Heritage Reader.
Your actions today will help inform and equip more and more Americans to better know, and defend, and preserve for future generations all that you and I love about our country, which God has so richly blessed. Please sign up today, and tell everyone you know to about this wonderful course!

Federal Workers Made to Chant: 'The Pilgrims Were Illegal Aliens'
By Joe Schoffstall | February 15, 2013
Judicial Watch reports:
"The sensitivity training sessions, described as 'a huge expense' by diversity awareness trainer and self-described 'citizen of the world' Samuel Betances, were held on USDA premises. The diversity event is apparently part of what USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack described in a memo sent to all agency employees as a 'new era of Civil Rights' and 'a broader effort towards cultural transformation at USDA.'
"In 2011 and 2012, the USDA paid Betances and his firm nearly $200,000 for their part in the "cultural transformation' program." Within the videos, Betances has the audience repeat after him in a brainwashing fashion. Among the chants repeated are: - "Thank you, black folks,"
- "The pilgrims were illegal aliens" and
- "The pilgrims never gave their passport to the Indians."
In another clip, Betances states he doesn't like the word "minorities" and prefers "emerging majorities." The obvious question is: why is the USDA holding "Cultural Sensitivity Training" sessions on "cultural transformation?" See video here . . . |

George Washington's Example on Religious Liberty
Instead of celebrating George Washington's birthday, today we've lumped him in together with no-names including Millard Fillmore and William Henry Harrison as we celebrate a generic "Presidents' Day."
But George Washington was not simply a President. He was the indispensible man of the American Founding. Washington's words, thoughts, and deeds as a military commander, a President, and a patriotic leader make him arguably the greatest statesman in our history. All Presidents can learn from Washington's leadership in foreign policy, in upholding the rule of law, and-especially now-in the importance of religion and religious liberty. While the Obama Administration claims to be "accommodating" Americans' religious freedom concerns regarding the Health and Human Services (HHS) Obamacare mandate, it is actually trampling religious freedom. President Washington set a tremendous example for the way that Presidents should handle such conflicts.
Washington knew that religion and morality are essential to creating the conditions for decent politics. "Where," Washington asked, "is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice?" Religion and morality are, Washington wrote, essential to the happiness of mankind: "A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity."
To match his high praise of religion, Washington had a robust understanding of religious liberty. Freedom allows religion, in the form of morality and through the teachings of religion, to exercise an unprecedented influence over private and public opinion. Religious liberty shapes mores, cultivates virtues, and provides an independent source of moral reasoning and authority. In his letter to the Newport Hebrew congregation-at the time the largest community of Jewish families in America-President Washington grounded America's religious and civil liberties in natural rights, and not mere toleration. Washington also confronted the limits of religious liberty. In one letter, Washington praised the Quakers for being good citizens but chastised their pacifism: "Your principles and conduct are well known to me; and it is doing the people called Quakers no more than justice to say, that (except their declining to share with others the burden of the common defense) there is no denomination among us, who are more exemplary and useful citizens." Yet Washington ended his letter assuring them of his "wish and desire that the laws may always be as extensively accommodated" to their practice. Such a true accommodation upholds the rule of law and religious liberty, because it allows men and women of religious faith to follow the law and their faith.
In his letter to the Quakers, Washington explained that government is instituted to "protect the persons and consciences of men from oppression." Further, it was the duty of rulers "not only to abstain from [oppression] themselves, but, according to their stations, to prevent it in others."
Washington's advice has gone unheeded.
We are told that religion and politics require a strict separation; that religion is a hindrance to happiness and therefore has been gradually stripped from the public square. We're told that displays of religious faith don't support the community but are downright offensive to non-adherents. The Supreme Court has supported and extenuated this tortured logic. Since the 1940s, the Court has put religion and religious liberty into a smaller and smaller box. At best, religion is a private good-but one that and should not be presented to others. And religious beliefs have no bearing on public life. We can see where this logic goes. Under Obamacare all insurance plans must cover, at no cost to the insured, abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, sterilization, and patient education and counseling for women of reproductive age. Illustrating the Obama Administration's narrow view of religion, only formal houses of worship are afforded an exemption from the coercive mandate. Many other religious employers such as Catholic hospitals, Christian schools, and faith-based pregnancy care centers are forced to provide and pay for coverage of services that, as a matter of faith, they find morally objectionable. Even the recently proposed "accommodation" to the rule isn't really an accommodation. As Sarah Torre explains, the suggested fix "fails to encompass many employers-and certainly all individuals-with moral or religious objections to complying with the mandate." To comply with the mandate requires religious men and women to violate church doctrine and their consciences. Under President Obama, we have returned to religious toleration, as defined by a bureaucrat somewhere. Julia Shaw is a research associate and program manager in Heritage's B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics.

RedState Morning Briefing
For February 19, 2013
1. The Ted Cruz Roadblock
The media has started attacking Ted Cruz so much Mike Allen is whining about it in hilarious fashion.
Ruth Marcus started it on the morning of Valentine's Day.
Jonathan Weisman did a story the next day on Cruz.
Between Marcus and Weisman came an overnight Manu Raju piece in the Politico that caused Mike Allen's tantrum.
What reporters should be noting is (A) the herd mentality of the media - the Washington Post, Politico, and New York Times all seized on the same story within 24 hours with Ruth Marcus kicking it off as an editorial; and (B) much of the focus on Cruz comes from within Senate Republican ranks.
The second point no doubt led to the first point and leads to a bigger question - why are Senate Republicans attacking Ted Cruz?
That the media has missed this is another demonstration of just how dumbed down political reporting in Washington has gotten. There is an angle unmentioned, unreported, and intriguing with just a little digging. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
2. Colorado Democrat: Women Don't Need Guns If They 'Feel Like They're Going To Be Raped'
Chill, women, says Colorado Democrat Rep. Joe Salazar. While arguing for the disarmament of college students, Salazar says that even if women feel like they're going to be raped, they may not, so who needs a firearm for protection? . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
3. Kasich Administration Presents a False Choice on Medicaid Expansion
Governor John Kasich has falsely insisted that if Ohio does not expand Medicaid eligibility, federal Medicaid expansion funds for Ohio will be sent to other states. With some Ohio legislators hesitant to worsen America's $16.5 trillion national debt, the Kasich administration has inaccurately claimed that rejecting Medicaid expansion would not prevent federal spending.
Contrary to February 14 Ohio House of Representatives testimony from the Republican governor's staff and previous statements from Kasich himself, Ohio's refusal to expand Medicaid eligibility as called for in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) would have no impact on other states' PPACA Medicaid expansion funding. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
4. How To Win in Virginia in 2013
As the eyes of the nation turn to key state races in 2013 - New Jersey and Virginia - the issues of fiscal responsibility and economic growth will be a yardstick for how voters measure candidates. This year, Virginia will play a critical role in the ongoing national discussion of how we reverse the massive growth of the federal government and begin to solve the problem of out-of-control government spending.
One thing is certain: we need strong, principled, innovative new leaders not only in Washington, but also in our state capitals-leaders who will attack fiscal problems head-on by reforming faulty tax codes and broken spending mechanisms, not just nibble around the edges. We need leaders who will take the fight directly to the political establishment and disrupt the ruling class which has failed our country so badly.
In 2012, American Majority Action and Ending Spending - non-partisan advocacy groups dedicated to reducing excessive government spending and waste, and restoring responsible spending practices in government - went to great lengths to support Governor Scott Walker and Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch in Wisconsin. As we said during the Wisconsin recall elections, "courage" was on the ballot. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
5. Mobilization: How to Put the Roots Back Into Grassroots Activism
Have you ever wondered why the Right is seemingly 20 years behind the Left in terms of activism?
Very simply, it is because the Left's playbooks were, in fact, written decades ago and the Left has had years to practice, adjust, and adapt their tactics.
When speaking to individuals and groups about activism and I reference how the Right is 20 years behind, I am being literal. Here's why:
It's been more than 20 years since a handful of other union representatives and I sat in a hotel conference room with one of our union's emissaries from Washington. It was the year that the CWA was rolling out its new mobilization program. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Israel to Award Obama Prestigious Medal During Visit
Israel will award President Barack Obama the country's Presidential Medal of Distinction during his upcoming visit.
Israeli President Shimon Peres' office said Monday that Obama will be recognized for his "unique and significant contribution to strengthening the State of Israel and the security of its citizens."
Obama is scheduled to visit Israel in March - his first as president.
Obama has often had a tense relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Jewish state's West Bank settlement policies and the lack of peace process with the Palestinians.
But Peres and the committee behind the award noted Obama's overall friendship and backing of the Iron Dome missile defense system.
Israel's Presidential Medal of Distinction is comparable to the France's "Legion of Honor" or the "Order of Canada."

Ben Carson Owes No Apologies
By Star Parker
2/18/2013
According to Cal Thomas, well-known nationally syndicated columnist, Dr. Ben Carson owes President Obama an apology.
Carson spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC this past week - a bi-partisan annual event held since 1953, attended by members of Congress and usually the President.
President and Mrs. Obama were present this year and Thomas feels that Dr. Carson was out of line for including in his remarks comments about areas considered public policy - our national debt, our tax system, our publics schools, and health care.
According to Thomas: "Our politics have become so polarized and corrupted that a president of the United States cannot even attend an event devoted to drawing people closer to God and bridge partisan and cultural divides without being lectured about his policies."
Dr. Carson is an African American physician, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, who rose out of poverty in a ghetto in Detroit. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bush in 2008 and is a role model for every American of every background.
I'm also proud that he serves on the national advisory board of my organization, CURE.
Although Carson did mention these various aspects of how we manage - or mismanage - our national affairs, he never once referred to the president or associated his comments on these issues with any political party.
To the extent to which President Obama might have taken Dr. Carson's remarks as personal criticism, it would only be in the sense of "If the shoe fits, wear it."
To the contrary, Dr. Carson began his remarks with citations from Proverbs and Chronicles, and tied the issues he spoke about to his broader theme about the moral crisis of our nation today. He talked about the moral decay of ancient Rome and how "they destroyed themselves from within."
And he then expressed optimism about Americans being able to solve our problems because "we are smart" and that "we have some of the most intellectually gifted people leading our nation."
No, if President Obama was offended by Dr. Carson's penetrating remarks, it is because the president had to be the one losing perspective of the moral tone of the event and Dr. Carson's observations.
What seems to offend Cal Thomas is that Dr. Carson has not fallen victim to the Washington disease that Thomas himself seems to have contracted as result of too many years in our nation's capital.

Hopeless: Job Corps Slams Door on 30,000 Young Adults |
|
by Tony Lee
President Barack Obama campaigned last week to promote his plans for job training and job creation that he claimed would expand the country's middle class, fully aware that the Job Corps program had suspended enrollment in January due to gross bureaucratic mismanagement of the country's largest job-training program for low-income youths, particularly African Americans.
The freeze started in January and is expected to last until June 30. That did not stop Obama from making lofty promises in his State of the Union address last week about job creation.

Why Is Mexico Asking the U.S. Senate for a Registry of U.S. Gun Owners?
Feb. 18, 2013
Mexican lawmakers will ask the U.S. Senate to create a registry of all commercialized firearms in border states, which includes California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Mexico says it will make it easier to trace guns used in violent attacks.
The measure was reportedly approved on January 9 by Mexico's Permanent Commission, a government entity that meets when Mexico's Senate and the Chamber of Deputies is in recess. Gun owners in Arizona are calling the proposal "foolish" and an "invasion of privacy."

Monday Brief
Overcoming Adversity
February 18, 2013
The Foundation
"The value of liberty was thus enhanced in our estimation by the difficulty of its attainment, and the worth of characters appreciated by the trial of adversity." --George Washington
Inspiration
13-year-old Anna with daughter Josey Ann
"I received an amazing email from Anna, who gave me permission to post her story and her name. ... 'When I was little I was molested for eight years by my stepfather. ... I got pregnant the first time when I was 12. I was scared and told him. He hit me and then loaded me up on drugs, telling my mom that I had been injured while out playing with some other kids. He killed my baby. ... When I was 13, I became pregnant again. This time I did not say anything to him. My mom noticed that my body was changing, even though I was only about two months along at the time, and asked me about it. ... I finally got the courage and told her everything. She immediately packed up my brother, sister, and I and took us to our Aunt's house. From there she called the police. ... In the end, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for molesting not only me but my sister. ... I was told by therapists, friends, teachers, family, and even strangers, that it would probably be best if I had an abortion; but I couldn't. ... It was harder than I have words to describe. But there are some things in life that are worth fighting for, and she was one of them. ... I decided to name her Josey Ann, after a character in a book I had read. On Friday, July 28, 1995, roughly six weeks before my due date, I went into labor. ... Words cannot express the joy I felt when we got to bring her home the day before I started the 7th grade. ... My mom was amazing, she watched my daughter so that I could finish school. I did graduate and was my class historian. I met a wonderful man who loves both me and my daughter, and we now have four children. ... It wasn't until I was 26 that I truly found a relationship with Jesus Christ. A wonderful neighbor of ours showed me how much Jesus loves me. Because He loves us, He gave us free will. My stepfather abused that gift when he abused me. But like Romans 8:28 says, God used something horrible to bring me one of the greatest blessings in my life. ... To anyone who is where I was, please hold on. You can make it, and your child will bring you more joy than you can imagine. It will be hard, but it is worth it.'" --LifeNews' Jill Stanek

When hate crimes aren't hate crimes: In Obama's America some comrades are more equal than others
Feb 18, 2013 05:13 am | Coach Collins
By Derrick Hollenbeck, staff writer
In Barack Obama's Department of Justice, "hate crimes" where the perpetrator is Black are ignored and those where Whites or Hispanics stand accused are rocketed through the federal courts.
Of course this is not a novel observation, but a recent case coming out of Compton, California in which an Hispanic gang committed an "interracial hate crime" underlines the ridiculous disparity in how "hate crimes" are handled by the DoJ.
Last Friday two members of a street gang calling itself the "NKs" which stands for N%%^#$ Killers were indicted for chasing an African-American juvenile through the streets for the "crime" of living in "their territory." This took place on December 31, 2012. They "yelled racial slurs, demanded the youth and his friends move away and broke a window. There is no more to these "charges."
Describing this dastardly crime, an FBI agent (doubtlessly speaking in somber tones) said, "No one should ... Continue Reading:When hate crimes aren't hate crimes: In Obama's America some comrades are more equal than others

Appreciating Bobby Jindal
Posted: 18 Feb 2013 11:58 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
Recently, Republicans have exhibited a fascination with the "flavor of the month" in presidential politics. Flavors have included Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Herman Cain, and now Dr. Benjamin Carson.
The tendency towards such infatuation is understandable, especially given the Party's tendency to nominate stale candidates like Robert Dole, John McCain, and (many would say) Mitt Romney. Unfortunately, though, a few speeches and appearances on conservative talk shows provide a dramatically insufficient basis for judging a person's suitability for the presidency. We need to see a potential presidential candidate circle the track at least once before making such judgments.
In Chris Christie's first full trip around the track, he over-indulged in a show of bipartisanship with President Obama on the eve of the presidential election, to the detriment of his own party's candidate. In Marco Rubio's first full trip around the track, he may prove to be the vehicle through which liberal Democrats (e.g., Chuck Schumer) and unreliable Republicans (e.g., McCain and Lindsey Graham) push through immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship for 10 million or more illegal immigrants. Would conservatives have swooned for Rubio with such unanimity in 2009 if he had advocated such legislation then? I doubt.
Bobby Jindal was once a flavor of the month Republican. But now that he's circling the track the second time, we're in a better position to assess his leadership skills, his potential electoral appeal, and his conservative bona fides.
As to the latter, there's much to like in Jindal's record. As this report in Politico observes, after a fairly cautious first term, Jindal (having been reelected overwhelmingly) has pushed an aggressive conservative agenda:
His education reform plans last year, which drastically expanded the state's voucher system and reformed the teacher tenure process, established Jindal as a national leader on the issue. This year, Jindal made news with his rejection of the Medicaid expansion in the national health care law. And in perhaps his boldest proposal yet, Jindal announced he wants to eliminate the state income tax. The details of the plan, which will be taken up by the Louisiana Legislature this spring, haven't been announced yet.
Viewing Jindal's overall record, Phil Musser, former executive director of the Republican Governors Association, concludes that "by any objective measure, Gov. Jindal has set the standard for policy accomplishments from the perspective of a forward-thinking conservative." I agree.
Politico speculates that Jindal is pushing this agenda in anticipation of a presidential bid in 2016. Certainly, that's a possibility. But Politico fails to provide any evidence (other than its own view that Jindal should accept the Medicaid expansion) to support the notion that Jindal's actions are not in line with his beliefs.
Right now, for what it's worth, Rubio and Rand Paul are the most widely mentioned prospective Republican presidential candidates for 2016. Right now, for what it's worth, I think I prefer Jindal.

Arab Spring, Libya Edition
Posted: 18 Feb 2013 11:00 AM PST
(John Hinderaker)
In Benghazi, four alleged Christian missionaries-from the U.S., Egypt, South Korea and South Africa-have been arrested for distributing extracts from the Bible, and may face the death penalty:
Four foreigners have been arrested in Libya on suspicion of being missionaries and distributing Christian literature, a charge that could carry the death penalty. The four - a Swedish-American, Egyptian, South African and South Korean - were arrested in Benghazi by Preventive Security, an intelligence unit of the defence ministry, accused of printing and distributing bible pamphlets in the city. ... "Proselytising is forbidden in Libya. We are a 100% Muslim country and this kind of action affects our national security," security official Hussein Bin Hmeid told Reuters.
Human rights activists in Libya aren't quite what we are used to here:
Benghazi lawyer and human rights activist Bilal Bettamer said Libya was a wholly Muslim country and Christians should not be trying to spread their faith. "It is disrespectful. If we had Christianity we could have dialogue, but you can't just spread Christianity," he said. "The maximum penalty is the death penalty. It's a dangerous thing to do."
I like that Orwellian formulation: if we had Christianity we could have dialogue, but we don't have Christianity, so...
The anti-proselytizing law dates to the Gaddafi era, but the current enforcement agency dates from the Islamic uprising:
Preventive Security is a unit created from several rebel formations during the 2011 uprising, although until now it has had a low profile, and this is Libya's first known arrest on proselytising charges since Libya's Arab spring revolution.
There are a handful of Christian churches in Libya, but they are tolerated only as long as they restrict their services to foreigners:
Tripoli's Anglican Church of Christ the King held its normal Sunday service on Sundaywith the priest, Reverend Vasihar Baskaran, saying that, as during the Gaddafi era, the authorities placed no restrictions on worshippers. But he said the five Christian churches in Tripoli have a tacit agreement with the authorities not to proselytise. "We don't distribute literature, so we don't have any problems," he told the Guardian. "It is better not to indulge in these activities because we respect Libyans. We respect their religion." The Anglican church, present in Tripoli for more than 200 years, has no Libyans in the congregation, and Revd Vasihar said he had yet to meet a Libyan Christian.
Not exactly a profile in courage. Whither Libya? "On Sunday, Libya's de facto head of state, speaker of congress Mohammed Magariaf, pledged that Libya would incorporate sharia law into its future constitution, during a speech in Benghazi to mark the second anniversary of the 2011 revolution." I suppose that means that in the future, Libya won't be so tolerant of religions other than Islam.

The Weekly Winston: Chuck Hagel as Thomas Inskip
Posted: 18 Feb 2013 10:34 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
The woeful Hagel nomination brings back memories of the 1936 appointment of the "entirely unsuited" (Richard Langworth's phrase) Sir Thomas Inskip to be the Minister for the Coordination of Defense in the British government-a post that everyone thought Churchill should fill. William Manchester pointed out that "a search of The Times files reveals that his only notable public effort had been a successful campaign to suppress revisions of the Anglican prayer book. . . Fleet Street and Parliament were incredulous." Churchill's friend Prof. Eric Lindemann called Inskip's appointment "the most cynical thing that has been done since Caligula appointed his horse consul." Harold MacMillan said that Inskip lacked "the slightest glimmer of that ruthless determination, by which alone such an office could have been made effective at such a time." The appointment occurred shortly after Hitler began remilitarizing the Rhineland.
It would seem Obama has found in Hagel his own version of Inskip to help him deliver peace in our time. Similar to Hagel, the design of the Inskip appointment seemed to be intended to degrade and delay defense preparations while pretending to do the opposite. There's been lots of commentary about how Obama chose the Inskipian Hagel because he wants GOP fingerprints on a contraction of the defense budget and an American withdrawal from the world stage. Churchill's public comments about Inskip were slightly muted at the time for various reasons, but included this analysis, which, adapted slightly to our context, applies fairly well to what Obama is up to with Hagel:
He [Inskip] has an office so absurdly constructed that the very conditions of his commission reveal a confusion of mind and a lack of comprehension in those who have defined it. He has allowed himself to become the innocent victim of responsibilities so strangely, so inharmoniously, so perversely grouped, endowed with powers so crabbed and restricted, that no one, not even Napoleon himself, would be able to discharge them with satisfaction.

Bartender: Give Me a Fracking Martini!
Posted: 18 Feb 2013 07:10 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
That was my first reaction this morning to seeing the news that Colorado's Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper recently drank a glass of fracking fluid to demonstrate that it is safe. From the Washington Times account:
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper went to unusually great lengths to learn firsthand the strides the oil and gas industry has made to minimize environmental harm from fracking. The first-term Democrat and former Denver mayor told a Senate committee on Tuesday that he actually drank a glass of fracking fluid produced by oilfield services giant Halliburton. The fluid is made entirely "of ingredients sourced from the food industry," the company says, making it safe for Mr. Hickenlooper and others to imbibe. "You can drink it. We did drink it around the table, almost rituallike, in a funny way," he told the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. "It was a demonstration. ... they've invested millions of dollars in what is a benign fluid in every sense."
B.T. Collins
This story brought back some fond long-ago memories of the great B.T. Collins, one of the legends of the California political scene who died of a heart attack 20 years ago at the too-soon age of 52. B.T. had lost both legs and one arm in Vietnam, but that never slowed him down a bit. "Bold, profane, and utterly outrageous" was one characterization of him. What else could you say about someone who asked that he be remembered at his alma mater by having a urinal in the men's room dedicated to him? (See photo.) A conservative Republican who was a state legislator at the time his death, he nevertheless did a bizarre turn as Jerry Brown's chief of staff late in Brown's (first) second term in 1981.
It was then that B.T. did perhaps his most remarkable deed. In 1981 California was compelled by the federal government (under threat of otherwise slapping a full quarantine on California's agricultural products) to begin an aggressive program of aerial spraying of malathion to kill off a Mediterranean fruit fly infestation. Environmentalists and paranoid fruit juice drinkers went bonkers of course, and mounted street protests and 24/7 panic-fests. That's when B.T. (everyone knew him by his initials) called a press conference and poured a glass of spray-strength malathion from a canister. And then drank the whole glass. The enviro panic campaign started to collapse at that moment.
What no one ever knew was that about a half hour or so later B.T. threw up violently, as you might expect. No word yet on whether Governor Hickelooper is, um, passing gas in strange new ways from his fracking fluid cocktail. I have no doubt that if B.T. were with us today, he'd belly up to the bar and yell, "Bartender-give me a fracking martini!" Though he might not say "fracking." He'd say something else.
By the way, isn't "Hickenlooper" a great name? I'm glad to see unusual names making a comeback in politics. One of my favorites from the early 1960s was the Republican senator Leverett Saltonstall. Sounds straight out of Trollope or something.
UPDATE: Powerline reader Wayne Van Heuvelen of Urbandale, Iowa writes in to note: "Unusual names are indeed being recycled. In fact, Bourke Hickenlooper was the governor of Iowa in the 1940's and was an Iowa Senator from the 1940's to 1969. Given the unusual surname, I imagine the current governor of Colorado and the late Senator Hickenlooper are related."
JOHN adds: I used to do quite a bit of work on behalf of manufacturers of agricultural chemicals, defending them against claims of phytotoxicity or nonperformance. In that capacity, I learned that it used to be rather common practice for ag chem salesmen to demonstrate the safety of their company's herbicide products by drinking them at meetings with groups of farmers. The practice was severely frowned on by the chemical companies, but the salesmen never seemed to come to any harm. However, note that I said herbicides. Plants aren't very much like people, so it is not surprising that drinking a liquid that is fatal to certain plants may not be toxic to humans. However, insects are quite a bit like humans, and I never heard of anyone trying to drink an insecticide, many of which are extremely toxic to humans (and some of which have even been used to commit murder on occasion). I think a person would be crazy to drink malathion or any other insecticide.

West Coast Retreat
Posted: 18 Feb 2013 05:06 AM PST
(Scott Johnson)
I'll be at the David Horowitz Freedom Center West Coast Retreat in Palos Verdes this weekend. They call it a retreat, but I think of it as group therapy. The retreat features an unbelievable lineup of speakers including Senators Jeff Sessions and Ron Johnson, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Victor Davis Hanson, Andy McCarthy, Bill Whittle, Bill Voegeli and Ben Stein, among others.
The retreat kicks off with dinner on Friday and continues through early Sunday afternoon. I'll be speaking on a panel with David Horowitz and Ralph Reed addressing where we go from here. I would love to find a few friendly Power Line readers in the audience at the retreat. Please think about joining us if you can.

Obama's Ill-Advised Federal Preschool Push
By Lindsey Burke
President Obama announced a major effort to expand government preschool early on Thursday. The plan would create a "continuum of child care for children from birth to age 5."
Expanding government preschool, particularly federal preschool, is wrought with problems. Any expansion of government preschool, whether state or federal, comes at the expense of private providers, who must compete with "free" government programs. When the private provision of care is pushed out of the market, that ultimately means fewer choices for families. Moreover, taxpayers and parents already know what big government preschool looks like: the federal Head Start program. Head Start has had no long-term impact on the cognitive abilities of participating children, has failed to improve their access to health care, has failed to improve their behavior and emotional well-being, and has failed to improve the parenting practices of parents. And this is according to scientifically rigorous evaluations by the program's own administering agency, the Department of Health and Human Services.
Keep reading to see what the experts had to say about expanding government preschool programs. >>

Former Texas Education Commissioner Pushes Back on Common Core National Education Standards
"My experience with the Common Core actually started when I was asked to sign on to them before they were written," says former education commissioner Robert Scott. "I realized that this initiative which had been constantly portrayed as state-led and voluntary was really about control."

On Today's Program
USDA taxpayer funded cultural "sensitivity training"
Last May it was revealed that the USDA spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on cultural sensitivity training. Now, video of the shameful event has been released and you can hear government employees basically being taught to be racist; repeating bizarre claims such as the Pilgrims being illegal immigrants. Glenn calls it one of the worst videos he's ever seen and says we should call Congress to get them to halt funding ASAP. Share this story, make it go viral and hopefully put an end to this total misuse of taxpayer funds. Read and share the story HERE.

Obama gives speech on being a good dad, ditches family for golf with Tiger Woods
After delivering a speech mainly on the importance of being a good parent, Barack Obama immediately abandoned his family during their vacation in favor of golfing with Tiger Woods. No wonder Obama doesn't want the press anywhere near him - who knows what sort of antics Tiger had up his sleeve for the weekend. Glenn reacts on radio today.
Another media fail: lie about Rand Paul on immigration
The Associated Press ran a shocking story about Senator Rand Paul over the weekend, only to be forced to retract it hours after posting it. The article claimed Sen. Paul believed citizens wanted politicians who would 'round up' illegal aliens and send them back to Mexico. But Sen. Paul said nothing of the sort - so how did they get it so wrong? Find out HERE.
Shocker: Alec Baldwin goes on racist rant
Alec Baldwin apparently ventured outside his home this week, because he's in the news once again for being a total jerk. This time he allegedly hurled racial slurs at a photographer, and told a reporter he wanted her to 'choke to death' after she merely asked a question. The man called his own daughter a thoughtless little pig, so this latest outburst should come as no surprise. WATCH

McCain grills David Gregory on Benghazi
Senator John McCain has received his share of criticism over the years from Tea Party conservatives, but today he gets nothing but praise for his absolute destruction of David Gregory on Meet the Press this weekend. Gregory seemed clueless as to why it mattered that the truth on Benghazi be uncovered -- and McCain called him out on it big time. Check out the exchange HERE.
