Air Force confirms Russian jets circled US territory of Guam

The Air Force confirms that two Russian bombers on Tuesday circled the U.S. island territory of Guam, prompting U.S. jets to scramble and respond.
Two U.S. Air Force F-15 fighter aircraft, operating out of Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, intercepted the Russian Tu-95 bomber aircraft, which left in a northbound direction, said military spokeswoman Capt. Kim Bender.
Bender said no further action was taken but declined to give more details, citing security reasons.
The incident occurred shortly before President Obama delivered his State of the Union address, as reported first by The Washington Free Beacon.
The newspaper also said the Russian bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles.
Missouri's incredible gun control law that could make you a felon
On radio this morning, Glenn had an unbelievable report from TheBlaze that explained how Missouri Democrats were pushing a new law that could make you a felon if you don't turn over your guns!
Democrats in Missouri introduced startling anti-gun legislation that would require gun owners to hand over their legally purchased so-called "assault weapons" to "the appropriate law enforcement agency for destruction" within 90 days.
Under the proposed bill, "Any person who, prior to the effective date of this law, was legally in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine shall have ninety days from such effective date to do any of the following without being subject to prosecution."
(1) Remove the assault weapon or large capacity magazine from the state of Missouri;
(2) Render the assault weapon permanently inoperable; or
(3) Surrender the assault weapon or large capacity magazine to the appropriate law enforcement agency for destruction, subject to specific agency regulations.

Is The Obama Administration Weeding Out Military Brass That Will Not Fire On American Citizens?
Ben Swann Full Disclosure conducts a one on one interview with Dr. Jim Garrow who claims the Obama administration is weeding out top military brass who are unwilling to fire upon Americans. Ben talks with Dr. Garrow and asks viewers questions.
Garrow indicates that his source referenced an officer who was called into a private meeting and given a litmus test of whether or not he would be able to fire on Americans. Upon, his answer that he would not do so, he was, in Garrow's words "forced to resign on the spot." Specifically, Garrow indicates that a scenario was with gun confiscation.
While the source is not cited and many people understand keeping sources under wraps, couldn't anyone make this claim? Garrow says that he has known this source for seventeen years. He says that his source is a name that most people in America would know.
One question posed to Garrow was, what was the context of the question? Could it mean to suppress a violent insurrection by extremists groups, whether politically affiliated or not?
Garrow simply referred to what I can only assume if the Feinstein bill, and, in my opinion, didn't represent it fairly, as he said it included "any gun with a handle." That's not exactly what the bill talks about. However, the point is taken and that is that there is no doubt that if the Obama administration thinks it can, it will go after guns.

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.

AAA warns E15 gasoline could cause car damage

E15, a higher blend of ethanol and gasoline, has rolled out in a handful of states. But its use in older vehicles is generating warnings from AAA, which says E15 could be harmful to pre-2012 vehicles.
The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties.
AAA, which issued its warning Friday, says just 12 million of more than 240 million cars, trucks and SUVs now in use have manufacturers' approval for E15. Flex-fuel vehicles, 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles, 2013 Fords and 2001 and later model Porsches are the exceptions, according to AAA, the nation's largest motorist group, with 53.5 million members.
"It is clear that millions of Americans are unfamiliar with E15, which means there is a strong possibility that many may improperly fill up using this gasoline and damage their vehicle," AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet tells USA TODAY. "Bringing E15 to the market without adequate safeguards does not responsibly meet the needs of consumers."
Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.

But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.

And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

President Obama may believe what he is saying, or he may not. That's not my point. My urgent reason for writing you today is this:
Millions of Americans are completely ignorant about the meaning behind those magnificent words - and we will lose everything we love about our country unless we correct that situation soon!
Yes, ignorance threatens our priceless American heritage. Any politician can utter rhetoric like the text I quoted, while many Americans cannot discern if the actions match the words; if the actual policies of the speaker will lead to a freer, safer, more prosperous nation . . . or to a bigger, more-centralized, all-powerful bureaucratic state. To steer our nation in the right direction, Americans must once again be educated for liberty. That is why I implore you to . . .
It couldn't be easier . . . it's FREE . . . and it's filled with lessons all Americans must learn now to understand and preserve our heritage of liberty for future generations.
You will agree, I'm sure, as to the reasons why I say this outstanding course is urgently needed today:

The President's 'Really Bad Idea'

Proposed by Barack Obama and signed into law by Barack Obama, the sequester -- automatic spending "cuts" of $85 billion that will kick in March 1 -- is now the only thing standing between us and a prosperous future. So says Barack Obama.
In his State of the Union address, Obama complained, "These sudden, harsh, arbitrary cuts would jeopardize our military readiness, they'd devastate priorities like education and energy and medical research. They would certainly slow our recovery and cost us hundreds of thousands of jobs. And that's why Democrats, Republicans, business leaders and economists have already said that these cuts -- known here in Washington as 'the sequester' -- are a really bad idea."
His really bad idea. In fact, last year he even threatened a veto of any attempt to undo it.
In truth, these supposedly devastating "cuts" are merely reductions in budgetary spending increases that are called "cuts" by the Democrats and the Leftmedia. They're designed to convince Republicans to cave on tax hikes, but many Republicans have simply resigned themselves to sequestration as the only hope for slowing the growth of government during Obama's presidency. House Republicans did pass a bill last year to replace most of the defense cuts with cuts to food stamps and other redistribution programs, and Senate Democrats aim to replace it with a 50/50 proposal of $120 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes. The "cuts" would come from agriculture subsidies and defense, while the tax revenue would come from implementing the "Buffett Rule" -- ensuring that millionaires pay at least 30 percent in taxes. But neither plan is likely to go anywhere.
Fortunately, Democrats tell us, we don't have a spending problem. As House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) explained, "[I]t isn't as much of a spending problem as it is a priorities, and that's what a budget is, setting priorities." No immediate reply from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), whose chamber hasn't bothered to pass a budget in four years. Pelosi continued, "[I]t is almost a false argument to say that we have a spending problem. We have a budget deficit problem." She didn't elaborate on how those are different things.
Her right-hand man, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), added his voice to the chorus, saying, "Does the country have a spending problem? The country has a paying for problem. We haven't paid for what we bought, we haven't paid for our tax cuts, we haven't paid for war." Um, that's called a spending problem. No matter, Hoyer blames Bush: "[W]e spent a lot of money when George Bush was president of the United States and the House and Senate were controlled by Republicans. We spent a lot of money." Indeed we did -- far too much -- but Democrats "solved" that problem by doubling, tripling and quadrupling spending.
Well, what about revenue? The Congressional Budget Office predicted this week that federal revenue will reach $2.7 trillion in 2013, returning to pre-recession levels and setting an all-time record for revenue collection. Revenue dipped to $2.1 trillion at the low point of the recession in 2009, but it has risen steadily since. It's important to recognize that the CBO estimate is based on a simple static calculation that assumes the recent tax hikes will produce a specific dollar amount in tax revenue. But this tit-for-tat theory never seems to work as anticipated.
Proven time and again, the higher tax rates go, the less revenue is actually brought in. That's because higher tax rates adversely affect investments, business growth, hiring and consumer spending. Taxes are punitive measures that restrict economic behavior, forcing individuals and businesses to curb their activity. In the long run, excessive taxes lead to less capital in circulation from which the government can skim off the top.
The CBO's assertion that federal revenue could reach an all-time high in 2013 runs counter to the leftist claim that Washington has a revenue problem. If the government collects more money than it ever has in history and it still doesn't have enough cash to cover the budget, we're back where we started: The problem is one of spending.

The White House denial of supplying arms to the al-Qaida-saturated Syrian rebels may be somewhat more difficult for some to swallow now that it has been revealed the arms-to-rebels plan had been endorsed by the leaders of the CIA, Pentagon and State departments.
If indeed President Obama rejected the arms plan, as reported earlier by the New York Times, it would mean the White House went against the recommendations of outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and then-CIA Director David Petraeus.
The plan was said to have been generated by Petraeus and Clintons.

Over a decade after thousands of New Yorkers were murdered by Muslim terrorists, the city's mayor is declaring victory in the War on Salt. Next up he plans to wage a spring offensive on Styrofoam cups. After that, who knows?
We live in surreal times. In the Middle Ages, cats and rats were put on trial. In this modern age, we began by waging wars on poverty and drugs, both of which we lost, and have now retreated to fighting wars on food ingredients, the bags we carry them in and the containers out of which we eat and drink them.
There's no telling what surreal enemy our wise and brilliant leaders will declare war on next. Shoes? Pepper? Umbrellas? Mathematics? The color blue?
There's just no way to know anymore.
The United States has lost the War in Afghanistan, a minor matter that no news outlet can find the time to report on because they're too busy covering a breaking story about a Republican Senator taking a sip of a water. Maybe a War on Water can be next. Was there a Styrofoam cup involved? It's time for one of those hard-hitting investigations that reminds us what a tragedy it will be when the last newspaper is strangled with the entrails of the last news network and the media's commitment to serious journalism is finally replaced by pictures of cats, wardrobe malfunctions and mutual accusations of racism. (And we won't even notice when it finally happens.)
But who can find the time to fight a war against Islamic terrorists, when there are more pressing wars to be fought? Like a war on being fat.

The left has never adapted to the transition from nationalistic wars to ideological wars. It took the left a while to grasp that the Nazis were a fundamentally different foe than the Kaiser and that pretending that World War 2 was another war for the benefit of colonialists and arms dealers was the behavior of deluded lunatics. And yet much of the left insisted on approaching the war in just that fashion, and had Hitler not attacked Stalin, it might have remained stuck there.
The Cold War was even worse. The moderate left never came to terms with Communism. From the Moscow Trials to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the left slowly disavowed the USSR, but refused to see it as anything more than a clumsy dictatorship. The only way that the left could reject the USSR was by overlooking its ideology and treating it as another backward Russian tyranny being needlessly provoked and pushed around by Western Europe and the United States.
Having failed the test twice, it is no wonder that the left has been unable to come to terms with Islam, or that it has resorted to insisting that, like Germany and Russia, the Muslim world is just another victim of imperialism and western warmongering in need of support and encouragement from the progressive camp.
The anti-war worldview is generations out of date. It is mired in an outdated analysis of imperial conflicts that ceased being relevant with the downfall of the nation-state and its replacement by international organizations and causes based around ideologies. Nazism could still loosely fit into the jackboots of the nation state. Communism was another creature entirely, a red virus floating around the world, embedding its ideas into organizations and using those organizations to take over nations.
Islamism is even more untethered than Communism, loosely originating from powerful oil nations, but able to spring up anywhere in the Muslim world. Its proponents have even less use for the nation state than the Communists. What they want is a Caliphate ruled under Islamic law; a single unit of human organization extending across nations, regions and eventually the world.
Why was there no military response to the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi?

The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) explanatory memorandum for North America calls for a "civilization jihad" in which American society is destroyed by its own hands.
The extent to which the MB and its affiliated organizations have made progress toward this goal is something most Americans simply aren't aware of.

You did it! Yesterday we asked for your help in stopping the confirmation of former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense. Capitol Hill was inundated with calls and emails. When the vote was taken Democrats were two votes short of the 60 votes needed to end the Republican filibuster. But this fight isn't over.
Here's an upside. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and others are demanding more information from the Obama Administration about the attack on our consulate in Benghazi. There is a long tradition in the Senate of delaying nominations as a form of leverage against the executive branch.
And because of this delay, we now know that Barack Obama did not pick up the phone to call anyone in Libya on the night our ambassador and three other Americans were murdered. The President was AWOL! So, in addition to Hagel's extreme views, it is worth leveraging this battle to the greatest extent possible.
Democrat Delusions
Thank goodness Senator Tom Harkin is retiring next year! Campaign for Working Families will do everything we can to make sure we replace Harkin with a strong conservative. Here's one reason why. At a Senate committee hearing yesterday the Iowa liberal made this astonishing statement:
"We're the richest nation in the history of the world. ... If we're so rich, why are we so broke? Is it a spending problem? No, it's because we have a misallocation of capital, a misallocation of wealth. All of this wealth that's been built up by hard-working Americans has been accumulated into fewer and fewer and fewer hands all the time. ...
"I just feel very strongly, that it's not just appropriations that's causing this problem. It's the lack of the revenue that we should be taking in to meet our obligations as a country."
If you are tempted to think Sen. Harkin has a point, watch this video.
Sadly, Harkin's socialist delusions have spread far and wide in today's Democrat Party. A big reason why the fiscal cliff talks between President Obama and Speaker Boehner broke down was because of Obama's insistence that we did not have a spending problem.
Taking the extreme rhetoric to new heights, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) compared the upcoming sequestration spending cuts to slavery. First she made this bizarre comment, "We're at the bone almost, and sequester, that is across-the-board cuts, will literally destroy us and put us in a recession."
Let's take a timeout for perspective. The sequestration cuts total $1.2 trillion -- over the next ten years. During that same amount of time, the government is expected to spend about $46 trillion. We're talking about a 2.6% reduction in spending over a ten-year period. This year's cuts amount to $85 billion -- when Obama is running deficits of $1 trillion a year and spending well more than three times that amount. Does that sound like "cuts to the bone" to you?
Facts aside, Jackson Lee also said, "I stand here as a freed slave because this Congress came together. Are we going to be able to do it today to free America?" Free America from what?
When you hear Democrats talking like this it makes you wonder what they would do if they had total control of Congress. Well, we don't have to imagine. Senate Democrats have announced a plan to solve the $85 billion sequester cuts with -- you guessed it -- higher taxes and more spending. Harry Reid has devised a $110 billion plan that raises another $55 billion in taxes. The net result is an additional $25 billion in spending!
And the Democrats are just getting started. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is promising to bring another massive energy tax to the Senate floor this summer. Her "cap and tax" scheme is expected to suck out of your pocket another $120 billion a year! These "libs" all need to check into a tax and spend addiction clinic to dry-out.

Dear ITAI MEMBERS AND DONORS:
ITAI ON THE MOVE...ITAI has had a magnificent showing on Capitol Hill this week. Its delegation consisting of Herbert London, PhD (President Emeritus of the Hudson Institute, author of many books, Dean of Humanities at New York University, advisor to Presidential candidates Sen. John McCain and Gov. Mitt Romney on foreign affairs, New York State gubernatorial candidate, and an ITAI Board member); Joseph Hakim (President of the International Christian Union, a native of Lebanon, a successful New Jersey businessman, and an ITAI board member); Rami Nuseir, Esq. (an Arab-Israeli Christian from Nazareth, Israel), and yours truly.
The day began early Wednesday morning (2/13/13) with a car trip to Washington, DC's Capitol Hill. In the early afternoon, a panel discussion on The Future of Israel took place in the hall right underneath the Capitol Dome with U.S. Representative Jack Kingston (R-GA), Herb London, and Joseph Puder. The audience consisted of Congressional aides, invited guests, and the media, including Al-Jazeera.
In the late afternoon and into the evening, the ITAI delegation was invited to partake in the inaugurating reception and addresses of the Congressional Hellenic-Israeli Alliance, including Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and the U.S., aimed at fostering a common strategic defense, combating terrorism, energy cooperation, and other critical issues. The Alliance is chaired by U.S. Rep. Gus Billrakis (R-FL) and Ted Deutch (D-FL).
The ITAI group then proceeded to meet individually with key U.S. Representatives including Trent Franks (R-AZ),Henry Waxman (D-CA),Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Leonard Lance (R-NJ), Gus Billrakis (R-FL), and Ted Deutch (D-FL). The personal meeting with these House members was most productive. Joseph Puder pressed the issue of the F-16 Fighter-Jets and Abrams tanks delivery to Morsi's Egypt. Both the Republican and Democrats had reservations about it. Puder also pointed out that the discourse on Middle East peace has to change from the Two-States solution to the Jordanian Option, whereby Jordan would federate with the Palestinian Authority under the guidance of King Abdullah. Israel would retain control over the border with Jordan while the Palestinians would manage the West Bank cities and the population. Puder discussed the need for the U.S. administration to consider regime change in Iran (supporting the Sunni fighting groups of Kurds, Baluch, and Arab Ahwazis) and aiding the liberal opposition to the regime, while at the same time targeting and destroying Iran's nuclear weapons. The Republican Reps. were most receptive while the Democratic Reps. were more in line with the Obama administration, but accepted a good portion of the arguments.
Last and perhaps best, the ITAI group met with Israel's Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren. Joseph Hakim requested that ambassador Oren host Middle Eastern Christian groups at the embassy, and Ambassador Oren agreed to have ITAI arrange these meeting.

WHY THE EUROPEAN UNION TREATS ISRAEL WITH SCORN By: Joseph Puder
Israel is the forward outpost of western civilization, or what we consider as the West. On its borders, Israel is directly facing the brunt of the anti-Western forces, namely Islamic fanaticism and intolerance, undemocratic authoritarianism, chaos, illiteracy, and economic backwardness. And yet, it is democratic Israel, with its western values of religious freedom, civil and human rights, technological inventiveness, a vibrant culture, and a successful economy that is being scorned by the Europeans and increasingly by the Obama administration.
The reason for this scorn can be traced to the aftermath of World War II. As the Western European nations calculated the damage rabid nationalism inflicted on the Continent, they decided that the cause was the divisiveness inherent in the nation-state structure in Europe. According to their reasoning, the separate entities, based on ethnic identifications, religious particularism, capitalism and colonial competition, led to conflict and war. As the European elites see it, the nation-state concept had outlived its usefulness, and what they deemed as necessary for peace and progress was a more comprehensive and universalist structure, namely the Common Market, which has evolved into the European Union.
For Jews however, WWII and the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were murdered by Europeans simply because they were Jews, led to a different conclusion. Lacking a national home to protect them from the ravages of anti-Semitism, Jews felt impotent and vulnerable. They needed their own state in order to live in safety and to pursue their own destiny. Israel, thus, became a state, not merely by a 1947 UNSC vote on the partition of Palestine, but by the sacrifices made by its sons and daughters in the battlefields of Palestine. With the passage of time and especially in recent decades, European elites (and to some extent the English speaking Western states of the U.S. Canada, Australian, New Zealand, and Britain) have become more dedicated to the notion that the nation-state had to be replaced by a more universalist structure (The EU and the U.N.). Israel, to those elites, has become an anachronism, if not an affront.
Public opinion surveys in Europe point out that the Jewish state is despised, and it is considered, according to the EU survey as reported by the Guardian newspaper (November 3, 2003), as a threat to peace. The European Commission poll claimed that "60% of Europeans see Israel as the greatest threat to world peace." 7,500 people in 15 European Union countries said that Israel was a bigger threat to world peace than Iran, North Korea and the U.S.
Responding to the survey, Nathan Sharansky, the then Minister for Diaspora Affairs stated, "The fact that the majority of Europeans sees Israel as the main danger is additional proof that behind the 'political' criticism of Israel stands pure anti-Semitism. The EU, which shows sensitivity on human rights issues, would do well to stop the rampant brainwashing against and demonizing of Israel before Europe deteriorates again to dark sections of its past."
The European Union elitists' knack for employing moral relativism in addition to its cherished adoption of multi-culturalism is at the core of its scorn for Israel. The Continent that expounded racist theories is now committed to the belief that all humanity is the same. That also explains why Jewish particularism so disturbs the Europeans. Israelis, at least a majority of them, celebrate their differentness and choose to follow their own heritage rather than the putative universal culture the West has adopted. It is why, in the EU states, churches are being replaced by mosques, and it gives credence to the claim that Europe will be Muslim in a few decades.
The Telegraph reported (on August 8, 2009) under the headline "Muslim Europe: The Demographic Time Bomb Transforming our Continent" that "Britain and the rest of the European Union are ignoring a demographic time bomb: a recent rush into the EU by migrants, including millions of Muslims, will change the continent beyond recognition over the next two decades, and almost no policy makers are talking about it...the numbers are startling. Only 3.2% of Spain's population was foreign-born in 1998. In 2007 it was 13.4%. Europe's Muslim population has more than doubled in the past 30 years and will have doubled again by 2015... In Brussels, the top baby boy's name recently was Mohamed... Europe's low white birth rate, coupled with faster multiplying migrants, will change fundamentally what we take to mean by European culture and society."
Israel's success at holding off their hate-filled Arab-Muslim hordes militarily and its economic success in contrast with the EU's economic trouble, added an additional dimension to the disdain Europeans feel toward Israel. The multi-cultural experiment in such EU states as Belgium, Norway, and Sweden, to name a few, has been a dismal failure. Crime rates have skyrocketed where almost none existed a generation ago. Sweden, for instance has "The highest rape rate in Europe" author Naomi Wolf said on the BBC Newsnight program recently.
Europe and the EU states long infatuation with dead-end social and philosophical fads have become costly. Unfettered socialism has already bankrupted some EU states. Communism chained Eastern and central Europeans and deprived them of freedom. In time, there is hope that the people of Europe will recognize that a universal type structure is no substitute for a national culture and the nation-state. Israel represents the argument that the nation-state is not a fad, but rather an ancient and still compelling vision of humanity, albeit, at the moment, Israel is scorned and abused by its Western "friends" for not conforming to the EU's double-faced version of human rights and pretentious future of humanity.
The Wall Street Journal article by Gerald Steinberg (May 6, 2008) suggested that "some of the recent friction results from hidden EU funding for anti-Israel civil society organizations. While supposedly promoting peace and coexistence, these groups often preach division and confrontation." Steinberg added, "The EU was also one of the funders of the infamous NGO Forum of the 2001 Durban conference. Designed to fight racism, it turned into one of the most despicable displays of modern anti-Semitism. The Forumaccused Israel of ethnic cleansing and genocide, and called for a policy of complete and total isolation of Israel as an apartheid state 'through boycotts, divestment and sanctions."
The vote by key EU states to upgrade the Palestinian Authority status on November 29, 2012, was indicative of the EU's hostility toward Israel, using Palestinian human rights and political status as an excuse. The inherent contradiction in the EU position is obvious. While seeking to supersede the nation-state in Europe (and despising an ethnic Jewish state) the EU is advocating an Arab-Palestinian nation-state.
The EU political, economic, and demographic decline is contrasted by a flourishing Jewish state. The multicultural and supranational union known as the EU is a failure. On the other hand, the ingathering of the exiles in the Jewish homeland produced a rich and uniquely Israeli culture that only a nation-state can provide. Israel is a success story despite the scorn with which the EU treats it.
The Other Shoe Falls as Democrat Calls for Draft for Women
When outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta signed an order allowing women in the military to join frontline combat units, the first question many conservatives asked was when would the draft be reinstated and used to "equalize" the gender breakdown of the military?
Currently, women make up less than one-fifth of our military forces. By liberal thinking, that's "unfair." Clearly, there must be discrimination at work.
Almost on cue, Rep. Charles Rangel, the House's resident draft enthusiast, said Friday that he will once again introduce legislation to reinstate the draft, this time with the added requirement that women register for Selective Service, as men must do on their 18th birthdays.
In a statement, Rangel said, "Now that women can serve in combat they should register for the Selective Service alongside their male counterparts. Reinstating the draft and requiring women to register for the Selective Service would compel the American public to have a stake in the wars we fight as a nation. We must question why and how we go to war, and who decides to send our men and women into harm's way."
So here we see the larger plan. By giving feminists something they want, liberals mean to weaken our combat force by requiring the military to take an equal number of women, which will almost certainly necessitate easing of some of the standards for strength and endurance in combat units.
This is what Republicans should be. Take a long look at the freshman senator from Texas - Ted Cruz. He's giving the Democrats and RINOs a dose of what it means to go to Washington and do what you said you would do when you asked people to vote for you.
Cruz took an oath to govern in terms of the Constitution.
Here's what he said in an email interview after coming down with a case of laryngitis he most likely got from taking on the Democrats:
"I made promises to the people of Texas that I would come to Washington to shake up the status quo. That is what I intend to do, and it is what I have done in every way possible in the responsibilities that have been granted to me."
The Senate has become a gentleman's club with most Republicans serving meals and drinks to the Democrats hoping for a few tips at the end of the day. All they get is the back of their political hand.
Sen. Cruz opposed Chuck Hagel, a former Republican Senator, for the Secretary of Defense position. He took on Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel when he "wrote to the chiefs of big banks urging them not to invest in gun manufacturers." Cruz accused the mayor of his crime-ridden city of "bullying."
Cruz had words with Charley Rangel, the Senate's third-ranking Democrat, on live television. The Texas Senator "voted against virtually everything before him - including the confirmation of John Kerry as secretary of state - and raised the hackles of colleagues from both parties."
What if we had 40 Republicans like Cruz? Now that's a party American conservatives could get behind.

Many of the emails that I have sent or forwarded that had any anti-Obama information in it were negated by Snopes. I thought that was odd. Check this out. For some time we've seen reports that Elaina Kagan was Obama's attorney fighting those pesky "he isn't a citizen" law suits. I went to Snopes to check something about the dockets of the new Supreme Court Justice. Elena Kagan, who Obama appointed, and Snopes said the email was false and there were no such dockets. So I Googled the Supreme Court, typed in Obama-Kagan, and guess what? Yep, you got it; Snopes lied! Every one of those dockets are there.

Ted Cruz (R-TX), Yet they should welcome the extension of debate, which provides an opportunity for Senators who once expressed concerns, such as Chuck Schumer (D-NY), to revisit their conclusions in light of new information.
The case for Hagel remains exceedingly weak. Some Democrats claim that he has the necessary qualifications to lead the Pentagon, but not even the Obama-friendly Politico supports that argument, noting Jan. 31 that Hagel's main qualification was "politician." Hagel's supporters keep citing his admirable military record, but it is not a qualification for a primarily civilian post which requires an intimate knowledge of defense policy.

He gained entry by claiming to be applying for an internship.
ACRU-Authored Brief Warns Court to Avoid Ideologically Driven Research in Marriage Case
In a brief filed at the U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 29 in the California Proposition 8 marriage case, co-author Ken Klukowski, a Senior Legal Analyst for the American Civil Rights Union (ACRU), argues that the Court should be leery of depending on social science to come to a verdict.
In Hollingsworth v. Perry, the court will decide whether the people of California can amend their state constitution to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. California voters did this in 2008, prompting legal challenges that have made their way to the high court.

It's hard to understand our lives without seeing that the human virtues are real and that they exist pretty much as Aristotle described them in The Nichomachaean Ethics. Aristotle's understanding imprinted itself on the Founders of the United States. When progressive politicians, historians and social scientists denigrated the virtues in order to undermine the Founders' handiwork, as they continue to do in our own day, John Ford sought to save the classic understanding in the form of the Western that he perfected in his moviemaking following his service under Bill Donovan in the OSS during World War II (as John Marini points out in his essay on Ford in Print the Legend).
Aristotle observed the virtues or their lack in history, in literature and in the men around him. We can observe the virtue of courage ourselves many times over in our history. Dozens of protesters rallied outside the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters yesterday in a show of support for Christopher Dorner and his claims of racism on the part of the LAPD. Among the signs the protesters carried were:
"If you're not enraged, you're not paying attention."
"Why couldn't we hear his side?"
"Clear his name! Christopher Dorner"
Support for the deranged killer wasn't limited to the protesters. According to the Los Angeles Times, "as the protesters stood Saturday, drivers passing by honked, waved and gave thumbs up."
Dorner was hardly unique in blaming his race for his misfortune; there's an entire industry devoted to this. What was unique about Dorner's claim of racism was its self-refuting nature. Through his deranged and murderous conduct, Dorner confirmed in spectacular fashion that he did not belong on LAPD. If yesterday's protesters want to stick up for a victim of racism, they should find a better poster-child.
But Dorner's deranged and murderous conduct is precisely what provides his appeal to some people. Marc Lamont Hill spoke the truth for once when he said that Dorner is "like a real-life superhero to many people."
It's often said that a common sense of right and wrong is one of the prerequisites for a nation. The pro-Dorner movement offers a hint that the U.S. one day will no longer satisfy what I had always assumed was a "gimme" criterion.
UPDATE: Some protestors express unhappiness with the fact that Dorner wasn't captured, but instead (apparently) shot himself after the police caused the cabin he holed up in to catch fire. It would be interesting to know how many more law enforcement officers needed to die at Dorner's hands before these protesters would be satisfied. On second thought, I don't really want to know.
Here in the United States, reporters seem to be almost an extinct species. That is true in the United Kingdom as well, except that some relatively disreputable organs, like the Sun, actually investigate things from time to time. It was the Sun that infiltrated radical mosques and filmed cleric Anjem Choudary telling his followers how to make war on the West. The Sun's account is all pretty disgusting, but what was most striking to me was Choudary's urging his followers to subsist on welfare while they plot jihad:
Scrounging hate preacher Anjem Choudary has told fanatics to copy him by going on benefits - urging: "Claim your Jihad Seeker's Allowance."
He cruelly ridiculed non-Muslims who held down 9-to-5 jobs all their lives and said sponging off them made plotting holy war easier. ...
He laughed as he told supporters: "You find people are busy working the whole of their life. They wake up at 7 o'clock. They go to work at 9 o'clock. They work for eight, nine hours a day. They come home at 7 o'clock, watch EastEnders, sleep, and they do that for 40 years of their life. That is called slavery." ...
Former lawyer Choudary - twice banned from running organisations under the Terrorism Act - said some revered Islamic figures had only ever worked one or two days a year, adding: "The rest of the year they were busy with jihad (holy war) and things like that."
He went on: "People will say, 'Ah, but you are not working'. But the normal situation is for you to take money from the kuffar [non-Muslim]. So we take Jihad Seeker's Allowance. You need to get support."
Choudary practices what he preaches:
Figures obtained by The Sun in 2010 showed the extremist cleric received £15,600 a year in housing benefit to keep him in a £320,000 house in Leytonstone, East London.
He also got £1,820 council tax allowance, £5,200 income support and £3,120 child benefits - equivalent to a taxed salary of £32,500.
Which equates to $50,375 at current exchange rates. The Sun notes that Choudary is paid much more by the British government than the soldiers who are fighting jihadists in Afghanistan.
Can the West survive? It doesn't seem likely, does it?
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Bob Woodward says that "some [Democratic Senators] have actually called the White House and said, 'Is Hagel going to withdraw? Will he consider withdrawing?'" My guess is that President Obama is committed to installing Hagel at the Pentagon, and isn't going to back down as long as he believes Hagel can be confirmed. To the extent that some Democratic Senators have a problem with Hagel, they will have to overcome their gutlessness and break ranks with the administration this one time.
Meanwhile, John McCain, appearing on Meet The Press, says he is "confident that Senator Hagel will probably have the votes necessary to confirm him as secretary of defense" when the Senate returns from its week-long recess. McCain seemed to base this prediction on his own unwillingness to hold up the nomination, even though he opposes it.
Statements like McCain's increase the odds against Democratic rank-breaking on Hagel and/or a change of heart by the White House. If confirmation is basically a done deal, then Senate Dems will be reluctant to torpedo it and Obama will not give up his hard-won victory. Perhaps most significantly, the pro-Israel advocacy groups that might be able to influence certain Senate Dems will continue to stay out of this fight, not wanting to alienate the next Secretary of Defense.
If, as McCain says, Hagel isn't qualified to be Secretary of Defense, then McCain should get out of the punditry/posturing business and see if there is enough anti-Hagel momentum, such as the kind Woodward posits, to shake things up. But resisting those urges has always been beyond McCain.
Special thanks and a shout out are owed this morning to the several Power Line readers who turned up Friday afternoon at the University of Colorado, Boulder for my lecture on "Is 'Conservative Environmentalist' an Oxymoron?" And kudos also to the university administration. There had been rumors that two different student groups were thinking about protesting my appearance, and perhaps disrupting it. I was fully prepared for the pie-in-the-face treatment-this has happened to Bill Kristol and others-and was all ready to complain if it wasn't lemon meringue. But the administration worked behind the scenes to meet with dissenting students and ask them to turn up instead and ask tough questions rather than create a spectacle. And so they did. And they heard something they've never heard before, starting with my favorite provocation: "The environment is much too important to be left to environmentalists; they just screw everything up."
This visit was all part of the process I referenced briefly here the other day-the long-suffering effort at the University of Colorado to bring a conservative point of view somehow to a campus that is perceived as being monolithically liberal or radical. This effort has been stewing for a long time, I learned, but reached a tipping point with the Ward Churchill debacle a few years back. (Which meant that I had to take care to be specific with my Churchill references while on campus.)
So we'll see what course this takes. The problem of liberal-left bias in higher education is more complicated than often comes to sight. It's not always the case that conservatives are excluded from academia by mean liberals, though I've got a lot of horror stories about active hiring bias, and if you want to see a riot in Boulder, just try floating the suggestion that they ought to recruit two conservatives. Some of the story is self-selection bias among conservatives, for whom academic life comes in down around option #12 or #15 in the rank order of attractive career paths. I know that was my feeling coming out of graduate school 25 years ago. The best example of this is George Will: Ph.D from Princeton, M. Phil from Oxford, who found journalism a much more attractive option than academia. For one thing, he gets to write for normal human beings, instead of cranking out journal articles written in academese for an audience of 50 readers as part of the tenure process.
That isn't quite what he said, of course. Rather, the topic was guns, and the occasion was the president's Google Plus "Fireside Hangout" on Thursday:
Obama was asked why he favored a ban on assault weapons, which account for only a small percentage of gun deaths, as opposed to handguns, which are responsible for the majority.
"I actually don't think we should ban handguns," Obama said. "But keep in mind what we're trying to do is come up with a package that protects Second Amendment rights but also contributes to reduce violence."
The Hill evidently thinks gun owners should be reassured; it headlined, "Obama seeks to allay fears: 'I actually don't think we should ban handguns.'" What Obama's comment really indicates is how little respect most Democrats have for the Second Amendment. Can you imagine Obama saying, "I actually don't think we should ban newspapers?" Of course not-the thought is ridiculous.
But the federal government can no more ban handguns than it can ban newspapers or television stations. If the Second Amendment were not clear enough, the Supreme Court has held unequivocally that Americans have a constitutional right to own and to carry firearms, including handguns, for purposes of self-defense. Yet the Democratic Party has never really accepted the Second Amendment. Many Democrats, perhaps most, think that a complete ban on handguns is not only possible, but is a pretty good idea. Gun owners generally believe that their rights will be taken away if they are not vigilant, and they are correct.

The thing about unemployment is that it's much, much worse than having a crap low-wage job. It's worse than almost anything. It's one of those life events that people never really recover from. Two years after a divorce or being widowed, people have adjusted, and are mostly about as happy as they were before the terrible event. But after two years of unemployment, people are still miserable. And even after they get another job, a prolonged spell of unemployment often has permanent effects on future earning power, and risk for things like depression. We should weight the losses of the people who are out of work much higher than the gains to the people who get an income boost.

Elliott Abrams is the Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. His CFR blog is Pressure Points. He served, most recently, on the staff of the National Security Council staff during the Bush administration commencing in June 2001, first as a deputy assistant to the president and later as deputy national security adviser for global democracy strategy.
In May 2007 Israeli intelligence discovered the construction of the reactor (built to North Korean specifications) as it neared completion in a remote location. Israeli intelligence concluded without any doubt that its purposes were military. Prime Minister Olmert sought to share the intelligence with President Bush. In the event, Israeli intelligence chief Meir Dagan met with senior administration officials including Vice President Cheney to share the intelligence. Dagan reported in confidence: "All Israeli policymakers who saw the evidence agreed that the reactor had to go away."
Bush and his national security team performed their own independent assessment. In Abrams's telling, as I understand it, they did not disagree with the assessment of Israeli intelligence. (The CIA, however, had a more, ah, nuanced reading of the situation. It expressed high confidence that the site was a nuclear reactor, but low confidence that Syria had a nuclear weapons program.)
The senior officials of the Bush administration considered military versus (ridiculous) diplomatic options involving the IAEA and the UN to deal with the reactor. Secretary of State Rice and Secretary of Defense Gates opposed bombing the reactor. Indeed, Gates wanted Bush to prevent Israel from bombing the reactor, urging Bush to threaten Israel that its relationship with the United States was at stake. Only Vice President Cheney supported a military strike. Bush opted for Rice's proposed diplomatic approach backed by the threat of force.
When Bush conveyed the administration's conclusion to Prime Minister Olmert, Abrams reports:
I wondered how Olmert would react and believed I could predict his response: He would say, "Wait, give me some time to think about this, to consult my team, to reflect, and I will call you tomorrow." I was quite wrong. He reacted immediately and forcefully. George, he said, this leaves me surprised and disappointed. And I cannot accept it. We told you from the first day, when Dagan came to Washington, and I've told you since then whenever we discussed it, that the reactor had to go away. Israel cannot live with a Syrian nuclear reactor; we will not accept it. It would change the entire region and our national security cannot accept it. You are telling me you will not act; so, we will act. The timing is another matter, and we will not do anything precipitous.
Abrams adds:
This is not the account President Bush gives in his memoir, in which he writes that Olmert initially said, "George, I'm asking you to bomb the compound." Someday transcripts of their conversation will be available, but Bush's recollection does not comport with mine.
Israel successfully struck the reactor in September 2007. It's a story from which one can draw many conclusions. Here is Abrams's final, inarguable conclusion:
[T]his incident is a reminder that there is no substitute for military strength and the will to use it. Think of how much more dangerous to the entire region the Syrian civil war would be today if Assad had a nuclear reactor, and even perhaps nuclear weapons, in hand. Israel was right to bomb that reactor before construction was completed, and President Bush was right to support its decision to do so. Israel was also right in rejecting fears that the incident would lead to a larger war and in believing that it, and the United States, would be better off after this assertion of leadership and determination. That lesson must be on the minds of Israeli, and American, leaders in 2013.

Politico runs a piece called "Why Obama went all-in on Chuck Hagel." The article eventually provides an answer: "because he's unafraid of sacred cows. . . ."
The "sacred cows" aren't named, but they don't have to be. Obama nominated Hagel to stick it publicly to Israel and what he and Hagel consider "the Jewish lobby."
Actually, the "pro-Israel lobby" probably could have killed the Hagel nomination, and would have done so if it were worthy of this description. Instead, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee, and AIPAC have remained on the sidelines, cowed by Barack Obama.
Score one for Obama's "stick it to Israel" campaign.
On the other hand, Hagel has been forced to back away from most of his most offensively anti-Israel positions and remarks. So the "stick it to Israel" campaign turns out to be something of a wash, given that administration policy towards Israel will be roughly the same (hostile) regardless of the identity of the Secretary of Defense.
Where does this leave us? As the Politico article makes clear, barring the unexpected, it leaves us with a Secretary of Defense in whom virtually no one, by this point, has any confidence.
The Washington Post reports that supporters of comprehensive immigration reform within the Republican Party are waging "a behind-the-scenes campaign to discredit the influential advocacy groups" that oppose such reform. The advocacy groups under attack are Numbers USA, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), and Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). They stand accused of being driven by an agenda of population control that includes support of abortion and sterilization.
This is malicious nonsense. With respect to Numbers USA and FAIR, its critics cite reports "that warn of environmental devastation from unchecked population growth." But no evidence is presented that either group favors abortion or sterilization. Many on both sides of the abortion debate can probably agree that "unchecked population growth" is undesirable.
As for CIS, critics point to a 1993 research paper sympathetic to contraception and the RU-486 abortion pill. The fact that the critics are relying on one 20 year-old "research paper" demonstrates the weakness and irresponsibility of their position.
Perhaps the most disturbing element of the Post's story is its account of Marco Rubio's role in the smear campaign. According to the Post, Rubio's aides brought "strategist" Mario Lopez to a meeting of GOP Senate staffers so that Lopez could distribute literature attacking Numbers USA, CIS, and FAIR. Lopez is the author of an article accusing these groups of "hijacking" the immigration debate for their own purposes.
In addition, a Rubio spokesman, Alex Conant, attributes to his boss the view that "some groups that oppose legal immigration should not be considered part of the conservative movement." I support "legal immigration," at least until Chuck Schumer, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, and Rubio redefine it. But I don't believe Rubio should be reading those who disagree with him out of the conservative movement. Nor should Rubio be trying to tilt the debate in his favor by sponsoring smear campaigns against those who disagree with his position on illegal immigration.
Lately, I have been worrying that the long-term effect of Rubio's vision of comprehensive immigration might well be to split the Republican Party in two, leaving us with three parties: (1) a progressive party, (2) a pandering "Republican" party that hopes (against hope) to compete for votes from the "center" of a much more left-leaning electorate, and (3) a "paleo/libertarian" that insists on a more conservative vision. The leaders of the three parties might resemble the three SOTU speakers from Tuesday - Barack Obama, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul - with the Rubio and Paul figures shifting their emphasis somewhat.
The Post's report makes it difficult for me to shake this vision.
Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, Judicial Watch has compelled the powers-that-be to cough up the video of one self-described citizen of the world (Thomas Betances) conducting government-approved, government-sponsored, government funded racial harassment (i.e., "cultural sensitivity training") at the United States Department of Agriculture. It took the USDA eight months to cough it up, but it was worth waiting for.

But why pick and choose when we can subject ourselves to the whole glorious thing?
A cafeteria food fight turned into a riot at South High School in Minneapolis yesterday. The school's security officers were insufficient to the task. Police officers dispatched to the scene sprayed mace and placed the school on lockdown to get a handle on the situation. Three or four students and a staff member ended up in the hospital.
What's going on? The Star Tribune discreetly reports that parents and students ascribe the hostilities to "racial tensions between Somali-American students and others." Who might those others be? For some reason, the Star Tribune's two reporters seem to be unable or unwilling to get to the bottom of the story.
The British press is not quite so inhibited. Let's go to the (London) Daily Mail. The Daily Mail reports that the fight was "between Muslim and black students."
Given that the Muslim students were Somali, I would say that should read "other black students" for the sake of clarity. The Daily Mail adds a little further down in its story: "Some members of the South High School community said that the violent incident was the culmination of ongoing tensions between the eight per cent of Muslim students of Somali de[s]cent and the 20 per cent who are African Americans." See also the local CBS news report (quoting a South High student: "I know it's a pride thing between Muslims and black people. They want their pride back for something. I don't know.") and the local NBC news report ("students claim this brawl was more than just a food fight, telling KARE 11 racial tensions have been boiling between Somali and African-American students for some time." On the other hand, the CBS story quotes another student: "A big riot. It was all types of races.")
Speaking of "racial tensions," I do believe someone is tense about race, even if it is apparently not the students at South High. I think it's the folks at the Star Tribune, who seem to be unable to get the basics of the story even with the two reporters they have on the case.
I assume the Daily Mail has the story right, despite the derivative nature of its account. The tension between black and Somali students in the Minneapolis high schools is an old story. Indeed, I wrote an op-ed column about tensions between Minneapolis's black and Somali high school students that the Star Tribune published in 1997.
If white students were harassing Somali students, I believe that Star Tribune would (rightly) have the story, calling (wrongly) for indoctrination in the glories of "diversity." Indeed, I think that's what set me off back in 1997.
There is evidence of absence in the Star Tribune story about yesterday's incident. My guess, and it is a guess based on the Daily Mail and local televisions news accounts, is that the Star Tribune is itself a little too tense about race to get the more complicated story under its nose straight.

This money can be used to fund much-needed projects throughout the state. House overrides Obama, votes to freeze federal pay for third straight year

The House voted Friday to freeze the pay of federal workers for the third year in a row over the objections of congressional Democrats and the Obama administration.
Members voted 261-154 in favor of the bill, which would also lock in a pay freeze for members of Congress. It exempts people serving in the military.
The bill won significant support from Democrats - 43 voted for it - while 10 Republicans voted against it.
The legislation is an attempt to override President Obama's executive order in December that seeks to give federal workers a 0.5 percent pay hike in late March. That order incensed congressional Republicans, who criticized it as an attempt to seize control of an issue that has traditionally been under Congress's purview.
There are 20 US Senate seats up for re-election in 2014 that are currently held by Democrats. These seats were won during the 2008 sweep year when President Barack Obama brought millions of new first time voters to the polls, and helping many of the down-ticket candidates along the way. While the Republicans are defending 13 seats in mostly conservative states, Democrats are defending a mixture of liberal, moderate, and conservative seats.
The GOP would need to swing 6 seats to take control of the US Senate.

Gun owners who can't buy high capacity ammo magazines because of new laws have another option: Print them.
Gun control measures passed or proposed in the wake of the Sandy Hook school massacre have targeted magazines that can feed 30 rounds or more into the firing chambers of AR-15s and other semi-automatic guns. New York has banned magazines holding more than seven rounds, and a federal bill proposed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., would ban magazines holding more than 10 rounds.
But the laws are at least one step behind technology. Using 3D printers and schematics available on the Internet, gun owners can manufacture a fully functional, plastic magazine clip. Plans are free, although getting access to a 3D printer may prove expensive, at least for now.
"If you can download it, you can have it," said University of Texas law student Cody Wilson, who is part of Defense Distributed, a group that has created the design for what they refer to as a "Cuomo Clip" along with other gun parts. It is all under an initiative they refer to as the Wiki Weapon Project.
Last week, a ten-year-old Alexandria, Virginia, boy was arrested and charged with brandishing a weapon, according to The Washington Examiner. This is a very serious charge that will stick with the boy. The "weapon" that the fifth-grader brought to school was a plastic toy gun with a bright orange cap on the end of the barrel. Unfortunately, high government debt is having more of an impact on each of us than we realize. Heritage's Romina Boccia explains that high levels of federal debt are linked to all of these problems for Americans:
Higher interest rates on mortgages, car loans, and other loans. For many people, this means having to wait to buy a home. High interest rates on loans can prevent people from getting a loan to start a business, make home improvements, or further their education.
Higher inflation. We've already seen food prices rise over the past few years. Higher inflation hits the poor and middle class hardest, because hard-earned dollars don't go as far. Food, clothing, and medical care all cost more. Seniors who are living on fixed incomes can see their savings dwindle. People who are in the middle class can start slipping toward the poverty level.
Keeping the economy down-and driving it down further. Deficit spending by the government is not separate from the economy; in fact, it drains money from private savings, which means fewer people are investing in the economy. In short, high debt kills jobs. It lowers wages and salaries as it drags the whole economy down.
Boccia notes that "Publicly held debt in the United States will exceed 76 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013, and chronic deficits are projected to push U.S. debt to 87 percent of the economy in 10 years."
By the time today's 6-year-olds are driving, the level of the U.S. debt will be teetering on 90 percent of the entire economy. Research shows that economies that reach this level suffer from long downturns in economic growth.
That's the last thing we need-unemployment has already been stuck in neutral for the past four years, and our economic growth has been sluggish. The Congressional Budget Office has warned that "growing federal debt also would increase the probability of a sudden fiscal crisis" that would "probably have a very significant negative impact on the country."
It's difficult to imagine a nationwide strike in America that would ground all flights and shut down all services. Or an exchange of Molotov cocktails and tear gas between protesters and riot police. Or protesters torching banks, resulting in the deaths of innocent bystanders. That's where Greece's debt crisis took that country-eventually, Greece's lawmakers had to start making the tough decisions and cutting back on spending. The cuts were painful, and the citizens revolted.
This is the track we are on. Right now, cutting spending and reforming entitlement programs in a gradual and predictable fashion may not be politically popular-but as Greece teaches us, waiting until a crisis forces lawmakers to make much more drastic policy changes can end badly-very badly. Our lawmakers should learn the lesson Europe is teaching us: Procrastinate on this massive debt at your own peril.
Boccia warns that "U.S. public debt is far too high at more than three-quarters the size of the economy-and growing federal spending, especially on entitlements, is quickly driving debt to damaging levels." The solution is that "Congress and the President should take firm and immediate steps to balance the budget within 10 years, by cutting spending and reforming entitlements."

Abstinence Education Reallocation Act introduced with Bipartisan Congressional Support

Unlike other approaches that focus on contraceptive use, abstinence-centered education promotes primary prevention and teaches vital life skills that empower teens to avoid all risk by choosing abstinence.
The Abstinence Education Reallocation Act has been introduced in the 113th Congress. This bill will begin to correct the huge 16:1 funding disparity between contraceptive-centered vs. abstinence-centered sex education within current sex education policy.
Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL) and Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-IL) introduced the bill in the House. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) plans to introduce the bill in the Senate after the Congressional recess.
The Abstinence Education Reallocation Act will require that at least 40 percent of funding shall be used for training and technical assistance by qualified organizations whose sole focus is the development and advancement of abstinence education.
The bill will not increase the federal budget, but will fund the program through monies already allocated for education.
