NATIONAL DISASTER: JOHN BRENNAN AS CIA DIRECTORBy Marshall Frank on February 13, 2013
If America is lucky the senate will reject the nomination of John Brennan to be our CIA Director. This business of staunch support of party can go to far, especially when political loyalty supercedes national security. Whatever happened to "country first?"
John Brennan is the president's hot choice to be in charge of our country's major intelligence agency, with access and control over all our national security operations and its secrets. I wrote a piece about Mr. Brennan two years back. Now it's time to resurrect that essay so people can review it once more and get a good snapshot at who we Americans will be employing for the chief of national and international interlligence security. If you have not read it, I suggest you do.
Today, one of the FBI's former top experts on radical Islam, and national security has come forward accusing Brennan of having converted to Islam several years ago while serving in Saudi Arabia. Naturally, considering his aspirations within the government, Brennan would not make that public knowledge, but neither has he refuted it, that I can find. Thus, if true, we will have a man in charge of the CIA who is an agent of the other side, the side who is responsible for 9/11, the side which has covert plans in place for the future destruction of the free world.
Without surprise, commentators in the sack with Barack Obama are denouncing the claim, charging the FBI agent of being another right-wing fanatic. But, where is Mr. Brennan on this?
It is absolutely mind boggling that this is happening to America.
Check out the highly credible Wikipedia report on Brennan, and tell us if this is who we want for the head of the CIA. Pay particular attention to the last sentence of the report, a quote by Mr. Morris Davis, a former Chief Prosecutor for the Guantanamo Military Commissions
I still wonder whose side he's on, and that should never be a concern when appointing a CIA chief. Then again, it speaks volumes about the motivations of the person who has nominated him. After all, Mr. Obama will be wanting a loyal subject who will carry out his agenda...but what agenda is that?

Obama's Most Dishonest State of the Union Address
February 13, 2013 By Daniel Greenfield
In 1986, at the closing session of the Communist Party shindig in the Karl Marx Theater in Havana, Castro had declared, "Let no one think that what I have here is a lengthy speech; it is the party's program." He then went on to speak for 7 hours and 10 minutes.
Obama's ridiculous 6600-word marathon is also not a lengthy speech; it is the party's program. The professional flatterers and fawners in the media have long since given up describing the teleprompter-in-chief as a talented speaker. These days Obama gives speeches that not only sound like they were read from a teleprompter, but also written by a teleprompter.
The obscene performance began with a celebration of an economic recovery that exists only in Washington, D.C., which has grown fat on the money that its corrupt political interests have stolen from the rest of the country, and ended by comparing a woman waiting in line to vote for him with a police officer who risked his life to stop a mad gunman.
And in between these two cynical and ugly bookends was a dog's dinner of out of control spending, class warfare and more bad ideas than even Castro could have come up with in seven hours.
As out of touch with the rest of the country as if he were speaking at the Karl Marx Theater in Havana, Obama claimed that spending was under control, the national debt was no longer a problem, the war in Afghanistan had been won, the economic recovery was here, unemployment was fading and Al Qaeda was a shadow of its former self.
Obama described the "sequester" that he had come up with as "a really bad idea" and blamed it on Congress. He took credit for the oil production that he had fought every step of the way and blamed Hurricane Sandy on global warming; a claim that even few global warming researchers are willing to make.

Important Announcement from SFL
|
You're probably wondering why you've been getting more emails from me and Sustainable Freedom Lab after having had next to none for quite some time.
Well, the truth is that I've been very busy. As always, I spend enormous amounts of my time researching, writing, and speaking to the public about the threats of Agenda 21 and Regionalism.
I've also been working on important projects behind the scenes.
Now I'm finally ready to reveal the first of these "secret" projects: The DVD version of "Stopping Agenda 21 in Your Community".
Like the title suggests, this DVD program offers step-by-step training on how you can fight back against those who would bring Agenda 21 into your community. The test audience who saw this program during the limited streaming we held last Fall felt it was critical viewing for anyone concerned about the erosion of our property rights.
Click here to read my blog post on the SFL website about our first DVD.

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
|
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
- Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
- Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

Important Dates:
- February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
- February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
- March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
- April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.
Any questions, holler.

We also offer again this year special benefits for Patriot Eagle and Patriot sponsors. We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:

Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!

Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
- You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
- I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.

Subject: Great Sources of information---Please keep in folder.
From a Fellow Patriot that was kind enough to put this together.
I spoke with someone recently regarding web sites/groups and subscriptions to information/news feeds. This is a listing of many such which may be of use to folks. The number of emails can get overwhelming at times, so check out the sites and see what suits your need. I recommend, though to be sure to subscribe to at least #1 Tea Party Patriots and #2 Americans for Prosperity. Groups/web sites for keeping up on issues, events, etc. 1. Tea Party Patriots (National) http://www.teapartypatriots.org Dot's note ► From this site, you can get to state and local group sites. Basically, this is our "Home page" for information on the national level. Great site to keep up with issues within the "realm" of the Tea Party's core values: Fiscal Responsibility, Free Markets and constitutionally limited Government. They have many citizen journalists who contribute. Also, information on events, etc. From the site: ABOUT TEA PARTY PATRIOTS The Tea Party movement spontaneously formed in 2009 from the reaction of the American people to fiscally irresponsible actions of the federal government, misguided "stimulus" spending, bailouts and takeovers of private industry. Within the first few weeks of the movement, Tea Party Patriots formed to support the millions of Americans seeking to improve our great nation through renewed support for fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies. Tea Party Patriots is a national grassroots organization that exists to serve and support the thousands of local organizations and millions of grassroots Patriots throughout our nation. We provide logistical, educational, networking and other support to thousands of community-based tea party groups around the country. Tea Party Patriots state and national coordinators serve your local grassroots groups, support you with the tools and technology you need to address your local issues, listen to your voices, gather your ideas, and together help shape the overall direction of our national movement. Working in a truly grassroots fashion, we have already changed the political landscape of America. TEA PARTY PATRIOTS IS 100% GRASSROOTS, 100% OF THE TIME. Tea Party Patriots is made up of, and funded by, millions of regular Americans just like you, who believe there is a better way forward for America. We are a non-profit 501(c)(4) organization that does not support any political party nor do we endorse candidates. If you support fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies, we encourage you to sign up for Tea Party Patriots today. 2. Americans for Prosperity (AFP) http://americansforprosperity.org/ Dot's note ► Great organization, super info. they sponsor/organize many events in the area and DC. Jennifer Stefano is the PA State Director. You've most likely seen her on Fox News Channel. From the web site: OUR MISSIONS Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process. AFP is an organization of grassroots leaders who engage citizens in the name of limited government and free markets on the local, state, and federal levels. AFP grassroots activists advocate for public policies that champion the principles of entrepreneurship and fiscal and regulatory restraint. To that end, AFP supports: Cutting taxes and government spending in order to halt the encroachment of government in the economic lives of citizens by fighting proposed tax increases and pointing out evidence of waste, fraud, and abuse. Removing unnecessary barriers to entrepreneurship and opportunity by sparking citizen involvement early in the regulatory process in order to reduce red tape. Restoring fairness to our judicial system. WHO WE ARE The heart and soul of AFP is our citizen activists. They organize events, write letters to the editor, and petition their lawmakers to uphold freedom and prosperity. Americans for Prosperity has more than 1,800,000 activists in all 50 states and 34 state chapters and affiliates. More than 90,000 Americans in all 50 states have made a financial contribution to AFP or our sister organization, AFP Foundation. WHAT WE DO AFP's network of organized and influential citizen leaders in a growing number of states throughout the country is working to change the nation one state at a time. AFP mobilizes citizens to effectively make their voices heard in public policy issue campaigns. AFP educates citizens about where their elected officials stand on our issues. AFP combines "best-in-class" capabilities built once at the national level with local knowledge from our state staff and on-the-ground grassroots to create economies of scale that win. AFP leverages our comparative advantages with those of other groups by building coalitions of local, state, and national grassroots organizations fighting for a common cause. 3. Freedom Connecter http://connect.freedomworks.org/ Dot's note ► A great site to connect with others. Register, then browse for folks who are near your residence or elsewhere who share your views. I have connections in CA, NY, NC, AL, TX, MO and FL. 4. FreedomWorks for America (FWFA) https://www.freedomworksforamerica.org/ From the web site: FreedomWorks for America (FWFA) is focused on spearheading bottom-up grassroots campaigns on behalf of candidates who will promote economic freedom. Unlike other PACs and organizations, FreedomWorks for America will aggressively support candidates who will defend freedom, even in political primaries against establishment or incumbent Republicans. And instead of spending funds on traditional methods like TV and radio advertisements, our financial resources will primarily be spent mobilizing our over a million-strong volunteer base to promote candidates who are champions of freedom. We are the only group with the grassroots base and the campaign expertise to make a real impact on the ground in races across the country. WHAT WE DO FreedomWorks for America utilizes its over a million-strong grassroots volunteer base to elect candidates who fight for lower taxes, less government, and more freedom. WHY WE DO IT FreedomWorks for America believes individual liberty and the freedom to compete increases consumer choices and provides individuals with the greatest control over what they own and earn. FreedomWorks for America aims to elect real champions of freedom who will stand up for these principles in the face of Washington establishment pressure, and who will be standard bearers for the grassroots to rally behind. HOW WE DO IT FreedomWorks for America's aggressive, real-time campaigns activate a growing and permanent volunteer grassroots army to show up and demand that our elected officials stand up for freedom. Our decentralized approach means that we have the capability to directly impact elections across the country through citizen action on the local level. 5. Constitutional Organization of Liberty (COOL) http://reclaimliberty.com/ Dot's note ► Great educational offerings. Sign up for email. Ruth & I bumped into each other at one of these events: From the web site: Liberty Breakfast The Liberty Breakfast is a new presentation format that allows participants to enjoy a casual meal with other like-minded individuals, and then engage in an interactive review and discussion of a specific topic related to the Constitution, the Founding Fathers or relevant historic documents. Obama's State of the Union
February 13, 2013
The Foundation
"For it is a truth which the experience of all ages has attested, that the people are always most in danger, when the means of injuring their rights are in the possession of those of whom they entertain the least suspicion." --Alexander Hamilton
NeoCom SOTU Address
Last night, Barack Obama delivered his latest NeoCom State of the Union Address. Below are the lowlights from his speech:
"Over the last few years, both parties have worked together to reduce the deficit by more than $2.5 trillion -- mostly through spending cuts, but also by raising tax rates on the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans. As a result, we are more than halfway towards the goal of $4 trillion in deficit reduction that economists say we need to stabilize our finances. ... Already, the Affordable Care Act is helping to slow the growth of health care costs. ... Let me repeat -- nothing I'm proposing tonight should increase our deficit by a single dime. ... [F]or the sake of our children and our future, we must do more to combat climate change. Yes, it's true that no single event makes a trend. But the fact is, the 12 hottest years on record have all come in the last 15. Heat waves, droughts, wildfires, and floods -- all are now more frequent and intense. We can choose to believe that Superstorm Sandy, and the most severe drought in decades, and the worst wildfires some states have ever seen were all just a freak coincidence. Or we can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgment of science -- and act before it's too late. ... But if Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will. I will direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy. ... Tonight, let's declare that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty, and raise the federal minimum wage to $9.00 an hour. ... Today, the organization [al-Qa'ida] that attacked us on 9/11 is a shadow of its former self. ... As long as I'm commander in chief, we will do whatever we must to protect those who serve their country abroad, and we will maintain the best military in the world. We will invest in new capabilities, even as we reduce waste and wartime spending. We will ensure equal treatment for all service members, and equal benefits for their families -- gay and straight. We will draw upon the courage and skills of our sisters and daughters, because women have proven under fire that they are ready for combat. ... [T]onight, I'm announcing a non-partisan commission to improve the voting experience in America. ... Police chiefs are asking our help to get weapons of war and massive ammunition magazines off our streets, because they are tired of being outgunned. Each of these proposals deserves a vote in Congress. If you want to vote no, that's your choice. But these proposals deserve a vote. Because in the two months since Newtown, more than a thousand birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries have been stolen from our lives by a bullet from a gun." --Barack Obama
Editorial Exegesis
"[Obama's] speech gave every indication that he remains a hostage to the superstition that we can spend our way to national prosperity -- or that we can pass laws that will force employers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and other businesses to spend our way to prosperity for us. ... In reality, the state of our union is this: The United States is today $6 trillion deeper in debt than it was before Barack Obama was first sworn in as president. That represents an increase of 57 percent in just four years. Put another way: Out of every dollar the country owes in government debt, 36 cents was acquired under the Obama administration. The state of our union is this: Today there are more than 4 million fewer Americans working than there were when Barack Obama was first sworn in as president -- not including those who have retired. ... The state of our union is this: Economic growth is weaker than it has been during any recovery in recent memory; in fact, the economy shrank in the last quarter. ... The state of our union is this: Incomes are lower today than they were when Barack Obama was first sworn in as president. ... The president boasted that a decade of war is coming to an end. It is, and a new decade of war is beginning. He boasted that al-Qaeda is decimated, but that news has not reached Benghazi or most of North Africa. So the state of our union also is this: North Korea sets off nuclear weapons with impunity. Iran seeks them without fear. Islamists slaughter our diplomatic personnel while the president's national-defense team keeps bankers' hours. ... The president's confrontational, hectoring, and highly ideological speech ought to be a wake-up call to the country. The Republican majority in the House is the only real check on his power. Supplementing that check with a Republican majority in the Senate is imperative. Even through all of President Obama's obfuscations, that much is clear." --National Review

Heritage Experts Analyze the State of the Union
President Barack Obama laid out an ambitious agenda last night. Here are some highlights of our experts' analysis of his claims, his plans, and his promises. Responding to Newtown All Americans, no matter what our backgrounds or political perspectives, abhor the death of innocent human beings. We were shocked by the killings in Newtown and other recent mass shootings, and grieve with those who joined the First Lady at the State of the Union. As we try to make society safer and stronger, constitutional and complex cultural factors must be taken into consideration. As we explain in a recent Heritage paper, policymakers should avoid a rush to judgment on prescriptions that violate first principles, ignore the real root of these complex problems, or disregard careful social science research. The most important solutions lie at the state and local levels, in the community and within the family. The Second Amendment is an important safeguard of Americans' security. Gun laws must be constitutional and should reflect the research on their effectiveness in preserving law and order. As to the President's emphasis on background checks: The only way to enforce universal background checks for private sales is if law enforcement authorities know what firearms are held by private citizens. And the only way to know what firearms are held by private citizens is through the creation of a national firearms registry. Federal law currently prohibits authorities from using data in the background check system to create a national firearms registry, although there are avid gun control proponents who would like to change that-a real threat to the Second Amendment rights of legitimate gun owners. - John Malcolm, senior legal fellow, Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, and Jennifer Marshall, director, Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society The "Voting Experience" in America President Obama talked about voting rights, claiming we are "betraying our ideals" when any American has to "wait for five, six, seven hours just to cast their ballot." He announced a "nonpartisan commission to improve the voting experience in America." His view of "nonpartisan" is putting two attorneys, one from his campaign and another from Governor Romney's campaign, in charge of the effort. While there may have been some Americans who waited for long periods to vote in 2012, the vast majority did not. A recent study of the 2012 election reported that the average wait time nationally was only 14 minutes. We already had such an election reform commission back in 2005, the Baker-Carter Commission, whose findings were largely ignored. It is especially hard to have confidence in any commission Obama might appoint, given that his attorney general has tried to stop state election reform efforts like voter ID intended to improve the security and integrity of the election process. Moreover, Obama's commission may just be a stalking horse to implement liberals' latest partisan fantasies of automatic and election day voter registration, so-called reforms that will stifle real improvements and endanger the integrity of our elections. - Hans von Spakovsky, senior legal fellow, Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies "Comprehensive" Immigration Reform Well, we certainly saw this coming. Another call for comprehensive immigration reform. We learned in his inaugural that our journey is not complete until "we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity." Who can disagree with that? The time has come, he said. And we all know what needs to be done. Really? We have long advocated and done extensive research on various policies that will reform immigration, but comprehensive reform is not the way to proceed: It won't fix the root problems and will likely make matters worse. It doesn't create opportunity, but restricts it. The better way to proceed is to go about solving problems, starting where there is broad agreement, and working toward a fundamental restructuring of our immigration system to emphasize work, opportunity, and assimilation under the rule of law. There is no reason to assume-and many reasons to doubt-that a "comprehensive approach" is the only reasonable and only fair way to proceed to reform. - Matthew Spalding, PhD, vice president, American Studies and director, B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics The Renewed Threat of Terrorism The President's statement that this nation "salutes those who defend it around the world" unfortunately rings hollow - when the Administration's treatment of the Benghazi terrorist attack is considered. Anyone with a sense of irony would not have put such a line in the speech. And, even though the Administration has thumped its chest over the killing of Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda and its affiliates are growing in North Africa in places like Libya and Mali. Only a week ago, the U.S. embassy in Turkey was the target of a terrorist attack. And we are still sorting through the messy aftermath of the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, which Obama has tried to move beyond. Until this White House is willing to account for its actions and false storylines peddled following the Benghazi attack, its credibility on the issue of terrorism will continue to be severely compromised. With a President who failed miserably to show responsibility for Americans under attack, this country will continue to face grave dangers ahead. - Helle C. Dale, senior fellow for public diplomacy, Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy Studies National Education Standards: Greater Federal Control of the Classroom "We need to give every American student opportunities like this. Four years ago, we started Race to the Top - a competition that convinced almost every state to develop smarter curricula and higher standards." What the President was talking about was Common Core national education standards. Since coming to Washington, the Obama Administration has been using federal dollars to "convince" states to agree to adopting national education standards. Not only is this a massive federal overreach into the nation's classrooms, but there are various other reasons states should be concerned about these federally backed standards. The standards are costly. Researchers project that it could amount to a total of $16 billion for states to implement the standards. Additionally, experts have expressed concern about the mediocre quality of the standards. Some states, like Massachusetts, have even been forced to "dumb down" their curriculum. Instead of a federal takeover of curriculum, states need greater flexibility to implement the reforms they decide are best. Rather than serving the needs of Washington, schools should have the freedom to help children succeed. - Rachel Sheffield, research associate, DeVos Center for Religion & Civil Society Afghanistan Perhaps the most ridiculous foreign policy statement of the evening was when President Obama said: "And by the end of next year, our war in Afghanistan will be over." This is naivete on a dangerous level. A war doesn't simply end just because you say it has. It is not just up to President Obama to decide when the war in Afghanistan ends. The Taliban has a say; the Pakistanis have a say; the Afghans have a say; and al-Qaeda has a say. If Afghanistan is about national security, like we have been told and like most believe, then the only responsible act is to ensure that U.S. objectives are met before any hasty troop reductions. After all, the whole point of a war is to achieve your objectives-not to leave it as soon as possible. Any decisions taken to reduce troops numbers should be based on improved conditions on the ground and on military advice-not on a desire to end a war that, in some capacity, and regardless of what Obama thinks, will still have to be fought after 2015. - Luke Coffey, Margaret Thatcher Fellow, The Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom Foreign Policy in Retreat What was striking about Obama's remarks was how strongly his foreign policy vision contrasted with his domestic policy prescriptions. At home, it seems that very little does not qualify as an "investment": by his way of thinking, the government exists to start programs, spend money, tax the rich, and do things. But abroad, the government exists mostly to stop doing things. One of the President's biggest lines was the promise of bringing the troops home from Afghanistan and ending the war, under the mistaken belief that al-Qaeda has been defeated. He reiterated his stale promise to rely on diplomacy to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, an approach that has been tested to exhaustion by successive administrations and is nothing more than a program of kicking the can down the road. His approach to nuclear weapons was, predictably, to argue for doing less, and-in the face of the North Korean and Iranian evidence-to imply that cuts in the U.S. nuclear stockpile will induce others to behave better. And in the President's telling, cyber attacks on the U.S. appear to stem from nowhere in particular; naming China, among others, might not be tactful, but it would have had the virtue of pointing out that this is not an abstract threat. The overwhelming impression left by the address was of a foreign policy in recessional, and one that relies on rhetoric and the promise of future negotiations to create the impression of action and achievement. - Ted Bromund, PhD, senior research fellow in Anglo-American relations, The Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom Infrastructure "Investments" Don't Deliver On Promises President Obama is right to point out that the country's infrastructure-its ports and waterways, roads, and bridges, are aging and in many cases "badly in need of repair." Extensive, healthy infrastructure is crucial for commerce and to keep the country economically competitive. His "Fix-It-First" program solution, however, doubles down on failed policies of the past-federal stimulus with no way to pay for it. He made another bold push for infrastructure investments (read: spending) to achieve his vision of a "smarter government." Bold-in the irresponsible sense-because such federal stimulus failed to jumpstart the economy following the 2009 stimulus package, and it will fail in future iterations. The private sector will not join in backing financially unviable projects, a reality from which the government could take a cue. Amazingly, the President insists on revisiting this financing mechanism with his new "Partnership to Rebuild America" initiative. - Emily Goff, research associate, Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies State of the...Climate? Swept into office four years ago based, in part, on promises to slow sea-level rise, President Obama initiated a radical climate agenda. It seems we are seeing a rerun in 2013. It is worth asking what is different four years after his first State of the Union Address? There have been four more years of no global warming. In 2010, there had been no significant world temperature increase for over a decade. The streak is now 16 years long. We have four years of costly lessons on the waste and inefficiency of green-energy subsidies. The scientific basis for catastrophic climate change gets weaker and weaker. The economic argument for green subsidies has already collapsed. It is time for the administration to quit using both arguments to justify a regulatory and fiscal power grab. - David W. Kreutzer, PhD, research fellow in energy economics and climate change, Center for Data Analysis "Balance" in Obamaspeak Tonight's State of the Union address reflected President Obama's liberal ideology: Everything starts with government. His proposals for new "investments" in manufacturing, infrastructure, and so on rest on the false belief that only government can figure out how to make the economy grow. Hence his "Fix-it-First" program, and his Partnership to Rebuild America. If government doesn't do it, it won't happen. When he claims his new spending proposals won't add to the deficit, it proves he just doesn't get it. The deficit is a symptom of excess spending; it's spending that has to be controlled. With the government drowning in red ink, Obama offers a life preserver made of lead: more spending. He has already pocketed a $618 billion tax increase in the fiscal cliff deal (in addition to $1 trillion in new Obamacare taxes). He needs to accept that true "balance" has two sides-and start cutting spending. - Patrick Louis Knudsen, Grover M. Hermann Senior Fellow in Federal Budgetary Affairs, Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies Obama Blames Conservatives for Whatever Happens with Sequestration The President has executed the greatest act of political jujitsu in the modern age. His people convinced congressional leaders to put sequestration into the Budget Control Act, and then denied it when it looked unpopular. Now, the President is smugly looking at conservatives and saying, "If only you guys were not so ideological, you'd let me raise taxes (again), and save Defense!" It does not seem to matter that only conservatives have offered solutions; only conservatives see the massive spending on entitlements as the problem (as do all reputable economists); and suddenly, the Joint Chiefs have finally started admitting what a disaster sequestration will be for our national readiness. The kicker is that the President will get to "blame" conservatives for whatever happens. The sad truth is the ones who will "pay" for this are the young troops who get sent to the next conflict situation ill-prepared. - Steve Bucci, director, Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy Studies America's Hurting Workers The President said that "for more than a decade, wages and incomes have barely budged." If spending and debt continue growing on their current trajectory, wages and salaries will be depressed because of the highest U.S. debt in a decade. Rising government spending and huge deficits are threatening to ring in a period of depressed growth and fewer opportunities for Americans. Without sequester-level spending cuts, publicly held debt is projected to reach almost 90 percent of GDP in 10 years. Debt levels this high are associated with significantly slower growth for a prolonged period of time. The President and Congress should balance the budget in 10 years by making necessary and prudent reforms to entitlement programs and cutting inappropriate, and often times wasteful, federal spending. - Romina Boccia, research coordinator, Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies For more analysis, including the President's education initiatives for preschool and higher ed, visit the full State of the Union roundup.

I Endorse Mark Sanford for Congress
On June 23, 2009, I wrote a defense of Mark Sanford buying his story that he was on the Appalachian trail, when he was really chasing Argentinian tail.
The next day it blew up in my face. There was a scandal. He had committed adultery. He had run off to Argentina in an irresponsible act. I wrote at the time
What Mark Sanford did was wrong. He needs to go in a dark hole somewhere where no one can see him or hear him and rehabilitate himself. On the bright side, I doubt his indiscretions will affect the FisCon movement. The left is going to spend the next week making Sanford into the second coming of James Dobson to smear real marriage advocates and social conservatives - positions Sanford was rarely vocal on.
Sanford left the public stage after that and disappeared from the conversation. Over time stories percolated about him. He got engaged to his mistress following his divorce. He set about rebuilding his life.
Now he wants to run for Congress.
It's a sad commentary on the state of play in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District that no one stood forward more solid on small government issues. But no one did. There are several people who are running and all of them are good people.
None of them have the track record in their time in elected office as committed to small government as Mark Sanford. Sanford caused many of us to embarrass ourselves defending him as he was embarrassing himself and his family.
But from my vantage point, we have nearly $17 trillion in debt, a Republican congress caving, capitulating, and preemptively surrendering. The Republican leadership removed several conservatives from key fiscal committees, but did nothing to Scott DesJarlais who has had multiple affairs and pushed his mistress and wife to have abortions.
Conservatives take the hardest line and exile their own who have failed them to the sidelines.
They should. We have values and when those values are betrayed by those who fight with us, we must often show them tough love and show them the door.
But we do a terrible job with forgiveness and rehabilitation. Mark Sanford walked out of the Governor's Mansion and out of public life for a while. He comes back as conservatives in Congress are fighting on all fronts, out numbered, depressed, and needing every man capable of manning the ramparts.
Mark Sanford can man the ramparts. Unlike his opponents, he has a stellar and uncompromising record as a limited government, pro-life, fiscal conservative.
I am willing to forgive him. And I'm willing to be graceful. We need him. There's no better alternative. He's with us. I endorse him without reservation. I hope the voters of South Carolina will show him grace and put him back in the fight at this desperate hour for fiscal conservatives. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Saudi Hypocrisy At Its Best
February 8, 2013 By Raymond Ibrahim
Few things offer surreal experiences as when Islam and the West interact-when 7th century primordialism encounters 21st century relativism. Consider the issue of "interfaith dialogue." In principle, it is a decent thing: Christians, Jews, Muslims, and others trying to reach a common ground and professing mutual respect. But what does one make of the gross contradictions that emerge when a human-rights violating nation calls for "dialogue," even as it enforces religious intolerance on its own turf?
Enter Saudi Arabia. Birthplace of Islam, the Arabian kingdom is also the one Muslim nation that regularly sponsors interfaith initiatives in the West-even as its official policy back home is to demonize and persecute the very faiths it claims to want to have an interfaith dialogue with.
Back in 2008, for example, in what was deemed an unprecedented move, Saudi King Abdullah "made an impassioned plea for dialogue among Muslims, Christians, and Jews," going so far as to refer to the latter two as "our brothers." His stated goal was to develop "respect among religions."
The Saudi monarch's most recent initiative reached fruition recently, on November 26, 2012, when the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue was launched in the Austrian capital, Vienna. According to its own website, the center "was founded to enable, empower and encourage dialogue among followers of different religions and cultures around the world." Lending international legitimacy to this Saudi gesture of goodwill, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was among those who attended the opening.
While all this ostensibly sounds well and good, consider the many incongruities, the many absurdities-initially demonstrated by the simple fact that Saudi Sheikh Abdul Rahman al-Sudais, who was quoted praising the Austrian-based center as proof that "Islam is a religion of dialogue and understanding and not a religion of enmity, fanaticism, and violence," is also on record calling Jews "monkeys and pigs" and Christians "cross worshippers."

February 13, 2013
Last night 22 Senate Republicans voted NO on the so-called Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). President Obama's "Organizing for America" and several other radical liberal groups immediately launched a social media attack. After the vote, the 22 Senators who voted NO were bombarded with nasty, vulgar messages on their Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. We need to fight back with the facts and support these Senators for seeing through the rhetoric and voting against this terrible bill!
VAWA is a terribly expensive bill that has directed more than $1 billion taxpayer dollars to the radical feminist agenda since then-Senator Joe Biden championed it through the Senate in 1994. The bill passed overwhelmingly, because it is wrapped in the promise of providing assistance to battered women. We must support the 22 Senators who saw through the liberal rhetoric and understand that VAWA is a bad bill for American families. For a humorous overview of why VAWA is so bad, click here for a clip by young conservative Julie Borowski.
Domestic violence is a serious problem that requires a serious approach, not radical, partisan politics. If Congress is interested in protecting women in crisis situations it should be giving money to the states so that local resources who can best understand the origins of the problems can best meet their communities' needs.
VAWA instead empowers a body of radical feminists who self-describe as the "VAWA Mafia" to award money on the basis of politics, rather results. Families in crisis deserve better.
VAWA is based on the feminist ideology that women are natural victims and men are natural batterers. Feminist recipients of VAWA's handouts have used federal money to train legislators, judges and prosecutors in feminist ideology and goals. This has resulted in dozens of state laws calling for mandatory arrest laws and no-drop prosecution, which is constitutionally problematic, and according to a Harvard study actually results in a significant increase in partner violence.
Many of the VAWA programs require women to file for divorce before receiving help. VAWA should be revised to encourage counseling, when appropriate and voluntary, instead of promoting family breakdown, which further harms women and children. VAWA money should also be used to help families combat the cause of violence, drugs and alcohol.
The 2013 VAWA Reauthorization bill, S. 47 adds additional political agenda items as it expands funding to same-sex couples and, for the first time in history, unconstitutionally allows tribal jurisdiction over non-tribal men accused of abuse.
Take Action!

Chrysler's Super Bowl Ram Truck commercial praising the American farmer was an unexpected big hit and is still being replayed around the country on talk radio. It was not just Harvey's mid-20th century voice that intrigued millions, but his unapologetic praise of the farmer's work ethic, religiosity, and family values that he implied were at the core of American greatness, and were shared by all sorts of other American originals.
President Obama proposed increased spending on infrastructure and manufacturing, universal preschool, and raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour in the first State of the Union address of his second term. He also chided Congress for not working fast enough to pass new gun-control laws, referencing various victims of gun violence sprinkled throughout the chamber. | | TOP STORIES ON PJ MEDIA |

Sitting in the CNN studio today, with an earpiece jammed in one ear and a microphone clipped to my jacket, the disembodied voice of some CNN guest urgently proposing that the government take advantage of historically low borrowing rates to invest in infrastructure howled in my ear. Without a monitor, the voice had no body belonging to it. It was the muse of liberalism. The idiot angel standing on the shoulder of Uncle Sam crying out, "Spend, spend, spend." In 1 Time Warner Circle, all the elevators play the CNN feed in small monitors. On the floor, there is more of the same. There's no escaping CNN in the tower of the corporate parent of CNN. Like some cheap production of 1984, it's everywhere and nowhere, one long commercial break for the country's least popular news network, whose most famous figure is doing his talk show on Hulu, still in his trademark suspenders while his third-rate British replacement shrieks nightly about gun violence. CNN is irrelevant, but in the ugly Time Warner Center, part shopping mall, part unfinished pile of construction equipment arranged to look like two skyscrapers, defacing the view outside Central Park, it's all that matters. In the CNN bubble, it's still vitally important and incredibly influential, even if its most influential moment in the last ten years consisted of two shameless doughy buffoons screaming at each other about gun control. If America ever goes the way of CNN, then it too will be reduced to some badly designed urban skyscrapers full of important people talking importantly about issues while outside the world has moved on. The disembodied voice in the backlit wilderness cries out that we must invest more in infrastructure. "America built the Panama Canal. They said it couldn't be done and it revolutionized commerce." But where exactly is our Panama Canal? For that matter, where after years of insane deficit spending is our anything? What infrastructure achievement has the shovel-ready administration managed to achieve? What has it done besides rename a few areas after politically correct figures and set up some monuments to the destructive energies of the left?

Illegal Alien Lobby to Testify Before Congress!
Call Your Senators Today!
Tell Them: No More Broken Promises on Immigration Enforcement!
|
The Senate Judiciary Committee is going to be hearing testimony from the pro-amnesty lobby, including a self-admitted illegal alien and felon, during its hearing this morning on comprehensive immigration reform.
Yes, you read that correctly! Committee Chairman Pat Leahy (D-VT) has invited an illegal alien-Jose Antonio Vargas-to testify during its 9:30 a.m. hearing to discuss granting amnesty and expanding guest worker programs. (Click here to read more about Mr. Vargas).
Among those scheduled to testify along-side Mr. Vargas include the nation's Chief Immigration Enforcement Officer-Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano-and Janet Murguia, the President of the pro-amnesty National Council of La Raza.
The Senate's pro-amnesty line-up underscores the lack of sincerity that many Members of the Senate "Gang of Eight" have in actually enforcing U.S. immigration law as part of an amnesty bill. In fact, four of the working group's Members are on the Committee: Immigration Subcommittee Chair Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ).
Despite making promises in their proposal of an amnesty being conditioned on border security and immigration enforcement, the fact that these Members have invited an illegal alien and other amnesty cheerleaders demonstrates they are more interested in celebrating illegal immigration and encouraging it rather than enforcing the law.
Sen. Chuck Schumer has already back peddled on the border security and enforcement promises in the proposal, recently telling reporters: "we're not using border security as an excuse or block to the path of citizenship," or "as a barrier to prevent the 11 million [illegal aliens] from eventually gaining a path to citizenship."
Call your Senators NOW and tell them you've had enough broken promises on immigration enforcement.
Tell them:
* The Administration needs to enforce our immigration laws and that voices of hard-working Americans-NOT just the pro-amnesty lobby-deserve to be heard!
* Amnesty in any form rewards law-breaking.
* Granting amnesty to illegal aliens will not "solve the problem once and for all." It will do nothing but encourage more illegal immigration, as demonstrated following the 1986 amnesty.
* Granting amnesty to illegal aliens is fundamentally unfair to individuals all over the world who are patiently waiting in line to come to the United States legally.
* Granting amnesty to illegal aliens unfairly adds millions of legal workers to the domestic workforce when 22 million Americans are either unemployed or underemployed.
* Granting amnesty to illegal aliens will not secure our borders, will not improve national security, will not end fraud in the immigration system, and will not fix the problem of visa overstays.

United States Postal Service to End Saturday Service
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) caused an uproar when it announced that it would be ending Saturday delivery of letter mail this August, saving an estimated $2 billion per year. Despite all the hand-wringing, this was a common-sense step by postal managers. FIND OUT WHY. >>

Tales of Red Tape #39: Swapping Wealth Creation for Regulatory Claptrap
Not many people know the meaning of "swap" (as in a financial hedge, not flea market). Only the most sophisticated investors actually understand the complexities of buffering risk by exchanging cash flows. Under Dodd-Frank, however, federal regulators have been tasked with assuming control of this market, in which hundreds of trillions of dollars are in play. THE RESULT ISN'T PRETTY. Wednesday, February 13, 2013 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer
State Of The Union If you didn't stay up for the State of the Union last night, I don't blame you. It offered little in the way of innovative policy proposals or bipartisan aisle-crossing and instead focused on a recitation of Obama's first term "accomplishments" and an unapologetic defense of Big Government. Only many of Obama's claims were dubious at best. It would take twenty pages to examine all of Obama's claims, so I'll focus below on just a few. Economic Growth: Obama's statements about the economy were full of distortions. Obama claimed that under his stewardship the economy has added "over six million new jobs." Well, if you start counting from February 2010, more than a year after Obama took office, then, yes, six millions jobs have been added. But since the beginning of Obama's first term, only about 1.2 million jobs have been created, and that doesn't include the millions of Americans who have dropped out of the labor force alltogether. Obama suggested he was responsible for the fact that the United States imports less oil than we used to. "We buy...less foreign oil than we have for 20" years, he said. That's true but Obama had little to do with it, unless you consider that Obama's poor economy has pushed down oil consumption. But the main reason the U.S. is producing more oil is because of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, aka "fracking," innovations that Obama has often worked against. The Sequester: Obama made it clear he's against "the sequester," the D.C. name for automatic spending cuts scheduled to take place on March 1st. Obama said the cuts were a really bad idea, but he failed to mention that the idea came from him, not Congress. Obama signed the idea into law last summer, and, in the months that followed, regularly threatened to veto any GOP effort to repeal the sequester. Fred Barnes at The Weekly Standard points out that even now Obama has proposed no alternatives to the cuts, other than wanting more tax increases. "Never mind," says Obama. It's the GOP's fault, and the media reports Obama's attack without mentioning the history of how we got to this point. Dubious Science:Putting his Scientist-in-Chief hat on, Obama suggested that Superstorm Sandy was caused by global warming. But it turns out that the super storm surge was weaker than the surge a storm produced in 1821, long before automobiles and power plants were adding carbon to the atmosphere. But the facts don't matter. Obama identifies the problem with dubious science and then proposes a solution: bigger government, higher taxes, more regulation and billions more of your money "invested" in "clean energy" failures like Solyndra. But the worst part of Obama's speech was his consistent hinting that if Congress doesn't roll over and do what he wants to do, he will do it by fiat-through executive orders, onerous regulation and other dubious means. This is an increasing hallmark of the Obama presidency. He's overreached numerous times and has been struck down by the Supreme Court, eventually. Conservatives sometimes blame the House GOP for not doing more to prevent Obama's overreach. But there is little legally that Republicans can do except support the court's challenges. It's going to be a long four years. Rubio's Makes Our Case If you didn't catch Florida Senator Marco Rubio's State of the Union response, please watch it here. Rubio did an outstanding job, showing again why he is one of the Republican Party's rising stars. He talked about his own humble beginnings and the fact that even today he lives in a working class neighborhood. On Medicare, Rubio talked about how, despite what Obama and the Left say, Republicans don't want to end the program. Rubio mentioned that Medicare enabled his father to receive medical treatment near the end of his life and to die with dignity. And he talked about how his mother relies on the program today. We want to save Medicare, Rubio said about Republicans, before reminding viewers that it is the Democrats whose policies would kill it. This is the type of personal argument Mitt Romney simply couldn't make to voters. Rubio spoke in words and with a story that everyday Americans could relate with. If you didn't watch Rubio's response, perhaps the only thing you've heard about it was that in the middle of his remarks Rubio took a moment to take a sip of water. As someone who regularly speaks before audiences, I know how easy it can be to get "dry mouth," which is probably what happened to Rubio after many minutes of talking. Predictably, Rubio's "water-gate" is all the Left can talk about. It's using the age-old tactic of mocking and humiliating an opponent in an attempt to damage his reputation. I predict that the incident will be mocked on all the late night comedy shows, and that a Saturday Night Live skit is already being written. But it's always a good sign when your opponents' criticisms focus on something trivial. It means they have no way of responding to your public policy arguments. Hagel Nomination Stalled Congratulations to Christians United for Israel (CUFI) and the Emergency Committee for Israel! Largely because of their efforts, the nomination of former Senator Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense has run into a ditch. Senators, led by Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, are filing the necessary motions to effectively require that Hagel obtain 60 votes instead of 51 to be confirmed as Secretary of Defense. There are 55 Democrats in the Senate, so the White House would have to peel-off 5 of the 45 Republicans to get Hagel through. (We will supply you with the names and contact number of the wavering Republicans later this week.) Of course, this shouldn't even be a close battle. Many of the 55 Democrat senators campaign as being pro-Israel, and Hagel's anti-Israel hostility is clear to everyone. Most Senators say that they are for a strong national defense but Hagel wants to take a buzz saw to the Pentagon budget. Add that to his weakness on Iran and it is amazing to consider that he has not withdrawn his name from consideration. The battle will continue but the odds are improving for our side. The Left's Call To Violence One of the least-reported but most important political developments over the last couple years has been the left's increasing willingness to marginalize conservatives by portraying their views as so far outside the mainstream that they can only be informed by hatred and bigotry. But, as I argue in my Human Events column this week, the left's nasty divisiveness increases the prospects that unstable people will act out violently against those it tries to marginalize. Are Hispanic-Americans offended by chants of USA?
Posted: 13 Feb 2013 03:27 PM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
Four California high-school students reportedly were suspended for chanting "U.S.A! U.S.A!" and wearing American flag bandanas during a basketball game. Although their punishment has since been rescinded, school administrators said "the incident is far from over."
The students attend Camarillo High School. They attended a game against rival Rio Mesa wearing the flag bandanas. After a vice principal ordered them to remove the bandanas or leave the gym, they left but came back at half-time and began the "U.S.A." chanting. There are allegations that they pointed towards the Rio Mesa student section while chanting, but I don't see such pointing in the video of at least a portion of the chanting.
Rio Mesa has a predominantly Hispanic student population. This fact caused Oxnard Union School District superintendent Gabe Soumakian and the Camarillo principal to worry that the students' actions might have had racist undertones, even though at least two of the "offending" Camarillo students are Hispanic (judging by their names). The administrators will pursue the matter further in the interest of what Soumakian calls "cultural proficiency."
But wait! What reason is there to suppose that Hispanics take offense at shows of American patriotism? Do they harbor hostility towards the United States? I wouldn't have thought so, but then I'm not on the ground in Oxnard, California.
I hope Soumakian and his crew get to the bottom of this quickly. I wouldn't want Congress to provide a path to citizenship for millions of illegal Hispanic immigrants if they, and maybe even some of their legal counterparts, can be presumed offended by standard expressions of American patriotism.

Reports: A filibuster of Hagel isn't out of the question
Posted: 13 Feb 2013 10:30 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
It still seems more likely than not that the Senate will confirm Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense. But today, there are signs that Senate Republicans may have enough votes to block his nomination while they wait for more information.
According to Politico, Sen. Roy Blunt says he believes there are 40 Senators whose votes would reflect the view that "it's too quick to end the debate on this nomination." 41 such Senators would be sufficient to prevent confirmation for the time being.
Blunt referred to the fact that Hagel has not yet responded to requests for information (such as payments to him by foreign entities). He expressed confidence that Hagel will provide the requested information. Whether that confidence is justified, or even genuine, I do not know. But Hagel shouldn't get an up-or-down vote until he provides the info.
Meanwhile, John McCain plays Hamlet. Having previously said that the Senate shouldn't filibuster Hagel, McCain now says he hasn't made up his mind about whether he will vote to end debate and allow a floor vote on the former Nebraska senator's confirmation. McCain is waiting to see whether President Obama responds to questions about his action (or inaction) during the attack on our consulate in Benghazi.
McCain's long-time side-kick, Lindsey Graham, has tried to tie an up-or-down vote on the Hagel nomination to Obama answering questions about Benghazi. It's an improper linkage because, as I argued here, Obama's response to the Benghazi attack has nothing to do with Hagel's fitness for Secretary of Defense.
McCain and Graham should be focused on Hagel's unwillingness to provide information, not Obama's. Then, perhaps, Senate Republicans could take a coherent and effective "no confirmation without information" stance.

Dr. Biden, I presume
Posted: 13 Feb 2013 08:34 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
Last night, Jonah Goldberg dared to write on Twitter that "the rote insistence that Jill Biden be referred to [as] 'Dr. Jill Biden' is kind of silly." I also ridiculed the "Dr. Jill Biden" reference in President Obama's speech, asking to be reminded what she's a doctor of.
I knew, and Goldberg later pointed out, that Jill Biden holds a doctorate in education. This means, said Goldberg, that she isn't a "real" doctor.
Today Goldberg reports that his comments elicited a remarkable amount of anger and bile. Apparently, the left considers it improper to have a laugh at the pomposity of Democratic public figures.
And make no mistake, Jill Biden's insistence on being called "Dr." is pompous. As Goldberg explains:
Washington is teeming with people with Phd.s (never mind law degrees!). Among my friends alone, I can count at least a dozen people who are technically entitled to be called "Doctor." But if I caught, say, Shannen Coffin insisting that people call him Dr. Coffin (a great name for an evil scientist btw), I would mock him mercilessly.
In my experience inside the beltway, insisting on being called "doctor" when not being addressed by students is a sign of vanity or some other insecurity (I'm of course talking about non-medical doctors). And people who insist on calling other people "Dr." do so for similar reasons - out of an over-compensating need to show respect. That need itself exposes an obvious double standard. I don't recall Lynne Cheney being called "Dr. Cheney" very often. She has a PhD. in English Literature. Her dissertation was titled "Matthew Arnold's Possible Perfection: A Study of the Kantian Strain in Arnold's Poetry." That sounds at least as worthy of respect as Jill Biden's dissertation: "Student Retention at the Community College: Meeting Students' Needs."
Jill Biden is proud of her academic credentials and has every right to be. But that pride need not extend to insistence on a title seldom used by others in similar circumstances. If she nonetheless insists, those of us who find it amusing need not pretend that she is acting normally.
JOHN adds: Well put, Dr. Mirengoff!

The Pope
Posted: 13 Feb 2013 07:53 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
We haven't taken sufficient notice here of the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to abdicate. Pope Benedict has always labored in the shadow, so to speak, of his charismatic and highly consequential predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who we can rightly claim had a key role in bringing about the demise of the Soviet empire. I write about this a lot in my second Age of Reagan, and I won't rehearse the story again right now, except to recall his famous slogan in his triumphant 1979 visit to his native Poland when he exhorted his audience of about 2 million in person and on television in his concluding Mass outside Krakow: "Be not afraid." Be not afraid of what? It was clear what he meant. One of the more touching moments of my second visit to Poland in 2004 was the taxi driver in Krakow, engaged to take me to the airport, who drove out of his way to point to, and explain in very broken English, that this was the field where John Paul II had conducted that famous Mass and proclaimed, "Be not afraid."
For all of John Paul II's brilliance and courage, in many ways I regard Benedict as more significant intellectually, and perhaps will yet come to be seen as the equal to JPII in consequences because of a single deed, which was his own "Be not afraid" moment. I refer of course to his 2006 "Regensburg Lecture" that outraged the Muslim world for its criticism of its anti-rationalism. The clear implication of the lecture is that Islam needs to "re-Hellenize" as Christianity did if it is truly to live up to its slogan as a "religion of peace." The Regensburg Lecture has been rightly compared to Solzhenitsyn's 1978 Harvard commencement address, and it is worth jumping into the chief offending passage:
In the seventh conversation edited by Professor Khoury, the emperor touches on the theme of the holy war. The emperor must have known that surah 2, 256 reads: "There is no compulsion in religion". According to some of the experts, this is probably one of the suras of the early period, when Mohammed was still powerless and under threat. But naturally the emperor also knew the instructions, developed later and recorded in the Qur'an, concerning holy war. Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the "Book" and the "infidels", he addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness, a brusqueness that we find unacceptable, on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. "God", he says, "is not pleased by blood - and not acting reasonably (σὺν λόγω) is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death...".
The decisive statement in this argument against violent conversion is this: not to act in accordance with reason is contrary to God's nature. The editor, Theodore Khoury, observes: For the emperor, as a Byzantine shaped by Greek philosophy, this statement is self-evident. But for Muslim teaching, God is absolutely transcendent. His will is not bound up with any of our categories, even that of rationality. Here Khoury quotes a work of the noted French Islamist R. Arnaldez, who points out that Ibn Hazm went so far as to state that God is not bound even by his own word, and that nothing would oblige him to reveal the truth to us. Were it God's will, we would even have to practise idolatry.
At this point, as far as understanding of God and thus the concrete practice of religion is concerned, we are faced with an unavoidable dilemma. Is the conviction that acting unreasonably contradicts God's nature merely a Greek idea, or is it always and intrinsically true? I believe that here we can see the profound harmony between what is Greek in the best sense of the word and the biblical understanding of faith in God.
"An unavoidable dilemma" in the context of Islam is the understatement of our time! You may recall that Benedict's call for Islam to embrace modernity rightly understood touched off riots in the Middle East, followed by a carefully worded non-apology apology from the Pope. (Good for him.) There's much more in this amazing lecture, including some profound observations and arguments on post-Enlightenment rationality and science and how they should be regarded. Georgetown's Father James Schall has the best book on Regensburg (pictured above), very much worth reading.

Our murder rates are screaming the truth but the Democrat controlled media is smothering it

By Derrick Hollenbeck, staff writer
When Jamie Fox gleefully spoke about getting to "kill all the White people" in his latest film, it was ignored by the Leftist media the way parents ignore the babble of an angry three year old. To Liberals, Blacks are tall children incapable of committing any wrongful act because their great, great grandparents were slaves.
This paternalistic attitude may have been necessary and defendable for actual slaves set free after the Civil War, but by the dawn of the 20th century the grandchildren of Black slaves were moving into the middle class in some parts of the country. Woodrow Wilson and W.E.B. Dubois changed that with lies and deceit and put Blacks back on their knees where they have been at the mercy of Democrats ever since.
With the election of Barack Obama the relationship Blacks have toward Whites is changing again. The increase of Black on White crime that is not ... Continue Reading:Our murder rates are screaming the truth but the Democrat controlled media is smothering it

U.S. Strategy: Put More Women in Afghan Army By Terence P. Jeffrey The U.S. went to war in Afghanistan in 2001 because al-Qaida had used that country as a base of operations to plan and launch an attack on the United States. Our war aim was, and should have been, to protect our security and our liberty. We have stayed in Afghanistan for more than 11 years pursuing goals such as integrating women into the Afghan army. Today, Afghanistan remains a horrible place not only for indigenous women, but also for the Americans sent by our government to teach them to be soldiers. Conservatism Killing the GOP? By L. On Today's Program
Obama v. Rubio v. Paul Glenn took a look at the stark differences between President Obama's speech and the two responses offered by Republicans Marco Rubio and Rand Paul. Obama presents his typical "government will fix everything" solution, while Rubio and Paul offer a very different path. Check out the side by side speech comparison from radio today.
A digital recap of #SOTU: How did the internet respond to last night's State of the Union festivities? Well...let's just say there's a lot more buzz around "fun size" Poland Springs water bottles than anything the President said. Get the digital recap HERE.
Did Rubio blow his moment last night
Glenn didn't have much to say about what the President said last night. However, he did have a few comments about the GOP response from Sen. Marco Rubio...and his Poland Spring water grab that seems to be making more headlines than anything that came out of Obama's mouth. Rubio is being touted as the emerging leader of the GOP. Did last night's gaffe completely wreck his message? Glenn reacts HERE.

Exploiting the victims of gun violence
"Never let a crisis go to waste" - that's the progressive motto. And throughout the aftermath of the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary massacre the anti-gun advocates have done everything they can to use this tragedy to their advantage, and last night during the SOTU was no different. Progressives from both sides of the aisle exploited victims of gun violence for their own political gain. Glenn reacts today on radio.

Libs keep falling for fake stories about Glenn, other conservatives
There's been an embarrassing trend happening in the MSM recently - they keep exposing their laziness as they fall for fake stories posted on obviously satirical websites.
