Quote:
"Another not unimportant consideration is, that the powers of the general government will be, and indeed must be, principally employed upon external objects, such as war, peace, negotiations with foreign powers, and foreign commerce. In its internal operations it can touch but few objects, except to introduce regulations beneficial to the commerce, intercourse, and other relations, between the states, and to lay taxes for the common good. The powers of the states, on the other hand, extend to all objects, which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, and liberties, and property of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the state."

Why is government stockpiling guns, ammo?
Exclusive: Joseph Farah examines Obama's plan for 'civilian national security force'
byJoseph Farah
Is the U.S. government getting ready for a war we don't know about?
And, if that's why Washington is stockpiling massive amounts of ammunition (hollow points, by the way), why is Homeland Security doing the buying instead of the Defense Department?
Here's what he actually said at a campaign stop in Colorado July 2, 2008: "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."
On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security, along with a SWAT team and Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies raided the home of Robert Adams in Albuquerque, New Mexico and, according to a federal search warrant affidavit the raid seized nearly 1,500 firearms from the man's home and business. However, no charges have been filed against him, despite the fact that court documents reveal that agents had been watching Adams for years.
Jihadist website posts new Al Qaeda threat that promises "shocking and terrifying" attacks on US and the West
But no worries. Obama says that Al Qaeda is vanquished. And big media quislings like the Boston Globe, NY Times, LA Times, WaPo and network are busy attacking those who warn and speak against this threat, like Robert Spencer, myself and anyone else doing the work of freedom. So it's all good, right?
A jihadist website posted a new threat by al Qaeda this week that promises to conduct "shocking" attacks on the United States and the West.
The posting appeared on the Ansar al Mujahidin network Sunday and carried the headline, "Map of al Qaeda and its future strikes."
The message, in Arabic, asks: "Where will the next strike by al Qaeda be?" A translation was obtained by Inside the Ring.
"The answer for it, in short: The coming strikes by al Qaeda, with God's Might, will be in the heart of the land of nonbelief, America, and in France, Denmark, other countries in Europe, in the countries that helped and are helping France, and in other places that shall be named by al Qaeda at other times," the threat states.
The attacks will be "strong, serious, alarming, earth-shattering, shocking and terrifying."
Under a section of the post on the method of the attacks, the unidentified writer said the strikes would be "group and lone-wolf operations, in addition to the use of booby-trapped vehicles."
Conservatives Launch New Social Network to Escape Facebook 'Censorship' - Will You Join?
Jan. 31, 2013
(screengrab from teapartycommunity.com)
Fed up with the threat of "censorship" on Facebook, a group of a conservatives are launching their own social network called "The Tea Party Community." The site, which doesn't even officially go online until Saturday, has already attracted nearly 50,000 members.
The site's co-founder, Tea Party activist Ken Crow, told Fox News that The Tea Party Community will be the "new home for conservatives and the Tea Party movement in America."
"Most of us are subjected to censorship on Facebook...I've been suspended there as have many of my friends. You also absorb a lot of abuse from liberals," Crow said.
Crow reportedly teamed up with Tim Selaty Sr. and Tim Selaty Jr. to put the social networking site together in November, which dubs itself as a "safe haven for the conservative movement where we can share ideas and thoughts and express ourselves without fear of retribution."
Crow said he, along with many other conservatives, feel as if Facebook intentionally targets conservatives through its policies.
"Most of us are subjected to censorship on Facebook," Crow explained. "I've been suspended there as have many of my friends. You also absorb a lot of abuse from liberals."
"As many as 100 Facebook users contacted Fox News with complaints that the social networking site had either removed conservative content or blocked them for posting conservative content," Fox News reports.
White House Dared People to Photoshop Obama's Gun Picture ...and Did They Ever
The Blaze | Mike Opelka | Feb. 3, 2013 11:51am
You've probably seen the newly-released photo of President Barack Obama doing what he says they do "all the time" - skeet shooting at Camp David.
The photo carried a standard notice from the White House concerning how the picture is used:

The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials, advertisements, emails, products, promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the President, the First Family, or the White House."

Petition to Montgomery County Sheriff. "PLEASE CLICK LINK BELOW AND SIGN!"
We, the undersigned residents of Montgomery County, implore our Sheriff to publicly pledge to honor her sworn oath to protect and preserve our guaranteed right to bear arms in defense of ourselves and the State under both the Pennsylvania and Federal Constitutions and to intercede on our behalf against any incursion by Federal or local law enforcement. Our PA Constitution is clearly stated in Article 1: Section 21- "The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned."
Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.
March 31, 2013 - Continuing Resolution: The current Continuing Resolution that the government is operating under expires on March 31. This means that they will have to pass a CR between now and then.
April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.
Any questions, holler.

And here's some really great news: This year's registration fee is only $229! Register by April 15th and you'll receive our "Early Bird" rate of just $189!
We also offer again this year special benefits for Patriot Eagle and Patriot sponsors.
We have some exciting new wrinkles planned for this year's event, and our list of confirmed speakers already includes:
Steven Emerson - Journalist, author, and the Executive Editor of the Investigative Project on Terrorism. A. M. Rosenthal, late-managing editor of The New York Times, described Emerson as "one of the nation's best national security correspondents."
John Guandolo - Former FBI agent and one of America's leading authorities on the Muslim Brotherhood and its inner workings in America. Guandolo spoke at our conference in 2011 and received rave reviews from conference attendees!
Ezra Levant - Canadian lawyer, author, newspaper columnist with Sun Media, and former publisher of the Western Standard. Hauled before a Canadian "human rights commission" because he published the Danish cartoons that satirized Muhammad, Levant's personal account of a politically correct government inquisition is something you won't want to miss!
The National Conference & Legislative Briefing will begin on Wed. evening, June 19th, and conclude on Friday, June 21st at noon, with additional optional training sessions Friday afternoon.
It will again feature our very popular Capitol Hill Awards Luncheon and our signature gala banquet-and of course, our Legislative Briefing, where Members of Congress will brief you on various issues and answer your questions.
So make your plans now to join us in our nation's capital for what promises to be our best National Conference & Legislative Briefing ever!

AAA warns E15 gasoline could cause car damage
Gary Strauss, USA TODAY November 30, 2012
E15, a higher blend of ethanol and gasoline, has rolled out in a handful of states. But its use in older vehicles is generating warnings from AAA, which says E15 could be harmful to pre-2012 vehicles.
The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties.
AAA, which issued its warning Friday, says just 12 million of more than 240 million cars, trucks and SUVs now in use have manufacturers' approval for E15. Flex-fuel vehicles, 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles, 2013 Fords and 2001 and later model Porsches are the exceptions, according to AAA, the nation's largest motorist group, with 53.5 million members.
"It is clear that millions of Americans are unfamiliar with E15, which means there is a strong possibility that many may improperly fill up using this gasoline and damage their vehicle," AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet tells USA TODAY. "Bringing E15 to the market without adequate safeguards does not responsibly meet the needs of consumers."
More Horrific Hagel Statements - Israelis Keep "Palestinians Caged Up Like Animals," Iran Should Not Be Isolated, Supports Fatah/Hamas Merger
The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has pointed to further, alarming statements made by President Barack Obama's nominee for Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, and urged senators to vote against confirming him in that office.
The far-left J Street, which present itself as a pro-Israel group, has now released the video of Hagel's speech to its 2009 conference, in which Hagel said that he opposed isolating Iran through diplomacy and sanctions, saying, "How in the world do we think isolating someone is going to bring them around to your way of thinking?"
Hagel also subscribed to the discredited 'linkage' argument, which contends that the Middle East can be greatly tranquilized and U.S. relations with Arab states enhanced if the U.S. pressures Israel into a peace agreement with the Palestinians. Hagel said, "The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is central, not peripheral, to U.S. vital security interests in combating terrorism, preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon, stability in the Middle East and U.S. and global energy security."
Echoing the views of hostile anti-Israel figures Brent Scowcroft and Zbigniew Brzezinski, Hagel suggested imposing a peace agreement on Israel, saying, "I think we are getting close to the time where something has to be laid down here on this."
Hagel also called for a Fatah-Hamas merge, saying, "No peace will be possible nor sustainable as long as the Palestinians remain a house divided." He did not mention any conditions for Hamas
Also, Hagel seemed to refer, like Israel's Arab enemies, to Israel's capital being Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem, when said, "It's always difficult for leaders to step forward, either in Ramallah, Tel Aviv, Riyadh or Cairo." ('Sen. Chuck Hagel at the first J Street Conference,' Youtube, January 29, 2012). Other than Tel Aviv, all the other cities named by Hagel are Arab capitals.
Additionally, a report in the Washington Free Beacon has unearthed a Hagel statement that appeared in a Nebraska newspaper, the Lincoln Journal Star, on January 12, 2003, in which Hagel said that Israel was "keep[ing] Palestinians caged up like animals" ('Hagel in 2003: Israel Keeps "Palestinians Caged Up Like Animals,"' Washington Free Beacon, January 9, 2013).
ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, "These newly unearthed statements by Hagel simply reinforce the fact that Hagel has a virtually unrivaled record of hostility to Israel, bigotry towards Jews and gays, disbelief in the importance of a strong U.S. military, indulgence of Middle Eastern terrorist groups like Hizballah and Hamas, and antipathy towards any conceivable measure - economic or military - for preventing Iran becoming a nuclear power if negotiations fail.
"These statements afford further reasons for the Senate to vote against confirming Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary and we urge senators to do so."
Please continue to call both of your U.S. senators and respectfully ask that they oppose the nomination of Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense. Please ask friends, relatives, colleagues and all of your electronic contacts to call as well.
Has Communist Ideology Overtaken America? Education is crucial. Today I want to share two very interesting lists with you, and rather than adding an extensive amount of my commentary, I want to give you the chance to examine the facts for yourself. It is my opinion that many communist goals have already been accomplished. I also believe that advancement has been made in other areas. But, you owe it to yourself to do your own research. I believe not only in the freedom of speech, but also in the responsibility of free thought. So please don't take my word for it. Examine the facts for yourself.
Again, I want to share two lists with you. The first is a list that was entered into 1963 Congressional Record. The second is the 10 planks of The Communist Manifesto.
If you can't see this happening in America, and a ton of progress being made, then I offer two potential explanations:
You are one of the "useful idiots" of communist teaching.
I am one of the "village idiots" that your Mama probably warned you about.
Some of these points will be open for debate and some will not. In some cases it is blatantly obvious that they have achieved their goals. It is even rumored that our own President has deep communist ties. You might want to check that out as well but I will withhold my opinion at this point. Let's just lay it out and you can interpret it.
This list was originally printed in "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. It was entered into Congressional Record in 1963 as the 45 goals of "The Communist Takeover of America."
Yes, it's true: You can support ACT! for America-at no cost to you!An important message from Guy Rodgers, Executive Director
The next time you make an online purchase of almost anything, you could be helping ACT! for America-at no cost to you.
Sound too good to be true? It isn't.
All you have to do is sign up for "iGive"-a program that's been around since 1997.
The concept is as powerful as it is simple.
Every time an iGive member makes an online purchase at over 1,000 brand-name stores, a percentage of that purchase is donated to that person's charity of choice.
And with the holidays just around the corner, you could be helping ACT! for America with every gift you buy!
The concept isn't new. In the mid-1990s many supporters of non-profit organizations signed up with long distance telephone programs where a percentage of their bill was donated to their charity of choice.
But our investigation of iGive has convinced us that this program has an ease of use and sophistication that we find remarkable.
Imagine booking a hotel room on Orbitz-and having 1.6% of that purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
Or buying an Xbox at Best Buy-and having 1.2% of the purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
The same goes for buying merchandise at Amazon, Bath and Body Works, Advance Auto Parts, Game Stop, Kmart, Home Depot, Holiday Inn, Old Navy, NASCAR Superstore, Overstock.com, Mattel, J.C. Penney, Office Max, QVC, Radio Shack, Shoe Carnival, Pottery Barn-and on and on the list goes.
In other words, every time you make a purchase of merchandise you would buy anyway, you would be financially supporting ACT! for America!
All you have to do is log on below and follow the directions to create your account and download the iGive "button." (Note: downloading the "button" is key).
When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems.
So I spent hours researching.
I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.
And the more I dug, the more I liked what I saw. For instance, both of my tech support questions were responded to within 60 minutes. How often does THAT happen?
As you know from our Patriot Partner program, we're all about encouraging a lot of people to each do a little-to do something. When everyone does a little, together we accomplish a lot.
So consider what could happen.
If just 1% of ACT! for America members each purchased just $400 in merchandise in 2013, from all the available outlets, and the average percentage donated to ACT! was 1.5%, the total amount donated back to ACT! for America would be...
...$15,000. That's a lot of money, wouldn't you agree?
And if you were one of those ACT! for America members, it wouldn't cost you one thin dime to help ACT! for America receive $15,000.
If this idea really caught on, and eventually 5% of our members made purchases with iGive, that $15,000 could explode to $50,000, $75,000 or more!
What's more, that 1.5% figure might be low. Many of the merchants offer percentage donations that are much higher. One printer inkjet company I looked at offered 13%!
Every merchant website you visit tells you right at the top what percentage of your purchase price will be donated to ACT! for America.
Just think what we could accomplish with an extra $15,000, $50,000 or $75,000 in our fight against radical Islam!
One of the things I most wanted to know was their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Check it out for yourself. I confirmed the terms with a company representative. And I like what I learned. As security-conscious as I am, I have no hesitation using the service-and I'm already doing so.
I know there are many people out there who would love to support ACT! for America, or give more than they're giving, but in these tough economic times they simply can't.
Well, here's a way that everyone who believes in our mission can easily support what we're doing-at no cost to them.
It doesn't get any better than that.
There are already chapter leaders who have signed up for the program, and the feedback I have been getting from them has been all positive. They love the idea and many of them are already using it.
So please, join me and these ACT! for America chapter leaders who are already signed up and using the iGive service.
Yours for a safe and free America
Guy Rodgers

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq
Jul 18th, 2012
Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet,The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.
This is a major push forward for APC in the battle to stop Agenda 21, and I need you to look it over and sign your approval to it.
Let me explain this vital project.
Across the nation, individuals and local activists have been working to stop the ravages of Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development. And we have won some astounding victories.
We've made Agenda 21 a major issue.
But we are vastly outgunned by the Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are pushing this agenda from the UN all the way to your city council.
They are flooding state capitals with lobbyists, money, and a flood of issue documents. They are rich, powerful and well organized.
We aren't. We are a rag tag band of dedicated activists with passion for the cause of freedom and little else.
That has got to change.
Our activists need the tools necessary to win.
That's just what my "Stop Agenda 21" project is designed to provide.

A 2009 graduate of Yale, he has written for numerous publications, including National Review, The Weekly Standard, The American Spectator, The New York Post, and The Washington Times. He was a 2011 Robert Novak Fellow at the Phillips Foundation, a 2010 Publius Fellow at the Claremont Institute, and is author of the recent book Sex and God at Yale: Porn, Political Correctness, and a Good Education Gone Bad.
The following is adapted from a speech delivered at Hillsdale College on September 20, 2012.
In 1951, William F. Buckley, Jr., a graduate of Yale the year before, published his first book, God & Man at Yale. In the preface, he described two ideas that he had brought with him to Yale and that governed his view of the world:
"I had always been taught, and experience had fortified the teachings, that an active faith in God and a rigid adherence to Christian principles are the most powerful influences toward the good life. I also believed, with only a scanty knowledge of economics, that free enterprise and limited government had served this country well and would probably continue to do so in the future."
The body of the book provided evidence that the academic agenda at Yale was openly antagonistic to those two ideas-that Buckley had encountered a teaching and a culture that were hostile to religious faith and that promoted collectivism over free market individualism. Rather than functioning as an open forum for ideas, his book argued, Yale was waging open war upon the faith and principles of its alumni and parents.
(NOTE: This letter is a response from Mark Alexander to his son, a Cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy, concerning the Boy Scouts of America national board proposal to allow homosexual Scout leaders. Alexander is both a Troop Scoutmaster and member of his area Boy Scout Executive Council.)
I received your note about news of an upcoming proposal before the Boy Scouts of America national board, which meets Wednesday, February 6th.
According to the news release regarding that proposal, "The BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation." You are correct, the removal of this restriction will permit local BSA Councils to accept homosexual members and, moreover, to invite homosexuals to serve in leadership positions at all levels of the organization.
I understand your profound disappointment in this great organization, after all you accomplished to obtain your Eagle rank. I share that disappointment as your former Scoutmaster, and many years in other leadership positions with the BSA.
A decade ago, when you first joined my Cub Scout Pack, I wrote the BSA's National Executive Board about concerns regarding advertisers in the Cub and Boy Scouting magazines. The great Scouting stories were wrapped in ads for junk food and video games.
I was struck by the fact that on the one hand, we, as leaders, were charged with encouraging our boys to develop healthy habits for life -- and on the other hand, the national organization was serving them a monthly dose of junk food and video game advertising.
The BSA responded that without those advertisers, it would be difficult to fund their glossy publications. I rebutted that this was a "Faustian bargain," that it conveyed the wrong message in every respect. I heard nothing more from the BSA.
Fast forward to the BSA news this week. In light of all the reports and litigation over the abusive predation on boys by homosexual adults in leadership positions with churches and other organizations, the notion that the BSA is considering lifting its ban on homosexuals holding such positions is mind numbing, stupefying -- in fact, shocking.
1. The first "expansion" of the exemption is as small as the government could make it. Religious organizations which exist to spread the faith (i.e. Churches)-- when they also do things like serve the poor or educate kids in a religious school--may have the exemption for those ministries as well as the Church itself.
2. Religious institutions who are not primarily in the business of spreading the faith-- likely hospitals, schools, etc.-- can have the exemption after a complicated "self-certification" procedure, but their employees and students will get free contraception without their employers' input--under separate policies issued directly from the insurance company.
3. My third observation is not about the law, but about the administration. Their desperation to get contraception, early abortifacients and sterilization into the hands of every woman and girl would be comical if they weren't in such deadly earnest. These new regulations are very long and very convoluted and very intent on exempting the fewest folks possible. I doubt most other provisions of the health care law have received this kind of attention.
4. Individuals and businesses which are not religious institutions are completely unprotected... THIS IS DISTURBING. In America, the right of religious freedom extends to all.
I can't do better than echo Alan Sears, President of the Alliance Defending Freedom legal group who has said, "Religious leaders and their organizations cannot be bought off with personal immunity, in exchange for abandoning their fellow believers and their own flocks to federal subjugation of their freedoms. It behooves none of us to preserve our own 'freedom,' when no one in our audience will be allowed to accept and live by our Gospel witness."
I more than suspect that this is an attempt to divide us and thereby to conquer.....why? We are winning both in the courts (by 10 to 4 so far) and in the court of public opinion.
The government has no business putting religious freedom on the negotiating table, or picking and choosing who is allowed to exercise faith.
I encourage you to speak out against this "compromise" with your family and friends, and on your Facebook pages and Twitter feeds. Send letters please....copying them to the President, the Vice President (America's top political Catholic, remember?) and Secretary Sebelius. Their addresses are below.

RedState Morning Briefing
For February 4, 2013
1.Thank God for American Crossroads and the Conservative Victory Project
American Crossroads is creating a new Super PAC to crush conservatives, destroy the tea party, and put a bunch of squishes in Republican leadership positions. Thank God they are behind this. In 2012, they spent hundreds of millions of rich donors' money and had jack to show for it.
It is interesting though. The people who brought us No Child Left Behind, Medicare Part D, TARP, the GM bailout, Harriet Miers, etc., etc., etc. are really hacked off that people have been rejecting them. In 2012, about the only successful Republican candidates were the ones who directly rejected the legacy of these people.
So now they will up their game. They don't like being shut out. They blame the tea party and conservatives for their failure to win primaries. They'll now try to match conservatives and, in the process, call themselves conservatives.
I dare say any candidate who gets this group's support should be targeted for destruction by the conservative movement. They've made it really easy not to figure out who the terrible candidates will be in 2014. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

3.Schumer: Indeed Enforcement is Not a Precondition to Citizenship
All things equal, when preparing to compromise on a policy issue, it is better for conservatives to first work together to craft a statement of principles, conditions, and red lines before signing onto a plan enthusiastically backed by the left. That is why it is so disconcerting that the statement of "conservative principles" on the issue of immigration was first crafted with Chuck Schumer.
When speaking with conservative figures in the blogosphere and on talk radio, Senator Marco Rubio has rightfully pointed out that he desired to get Democrats on record as supporting major reforms. He wrote in these pages earlier this week that conservatives won important concessions from Democrats in that they have agreed to make enforcement a precondition to any legalization. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
4.Reflections on the American Revolution: The Militia
How did thirteen colonies, with a barely functioning central government and a thrown-together, underfunded and poorly supplied army of constantly fluctuating size and composition, win the Revolutionary War? One reason was the colonies' ability to rely on their common citizens to supplement the Continental Army with local militia. I've looked previously at the demographic and physical conditions and foreign alliances that shaped the war and the generals who led the armies. Let's conclude this tour of the American Revolution with the militia. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

From the Hagel nomination to gun control testimony to the 'gang of 8' framework for a comprehensive immigration bill, this past week on Capitol Hill has been an overwhelming disaster for the future direction of our nation. (If only Romney had been elected President!)
Following on the heels of the 'fiscal cliff' debacle in which 77% (not 1%) of all adult Americans were hit with tax increases, the bad news continued to flow out of Washington--a shrinkage of the economy in the last quarter of 2012 and an up tick in the unemployment
rate. Shocking!
But the worst omen of the week had to be Senator Chuck Hagel's outrageously poor
performance during yesterday's US Senate ConfirmationHearing--reaffirming our opposition to his nomination as Secretary of Defense (please see press release below.)
The vote on Hagel's nomination has yet to be scheduled--and due to the filibuster-- there is a chance that he could go down to defeat. Only 41 Senators are needed to stop him.
Please call the Capitol Switchboard at 202.224.3121 and ask to be connected to your US Senators (DE: Biden, Carper; NJ: Lautenberg, Menendez; PA: Casey, Toomey).
Senator 'Sleazy' Menendez's vote could be critical.
Politely request that your US Senators vote against Hagel's confirmation as Defense Secretary.

Also, call the White House comment line @ 202.456.1111 and tell President Obama to immediately withdrawal this embarrassing nomination.
Impacting public opinion by writing letters to the editor and placing calls to talk radio shows is another course of action that would be greatly appreciated!

Association Says Hagel Dangerous Choice for Defense Secretary;
Calls on US Senate to Reject Nomination
Philadelphia, PA (February 1, 2013) -- The Independence Hall Tea Party
Association, the largest independent Tea Party group in the tri-state (DE, NJ, PA) region, announced, today, its vehement opposition to the nomination of Chuck Hagel as United States Secretary of Defense.
"We withheld our formal opposition in the hope that former Republican US Senator Chuck Hagel could dispel the serious doubts raised about his candidacy for this top level cabinet appointment," said Association President, Teri Adams.
"Instead of old concerns being dismissed, new ones emerged during his Senate confirmation hearing, yesterday. That is why we are asking our members from the tri-state area to call their US Senators and demand Hagel's nomination be rejected.
"Without even scratching the surface of Senator Hagel's record, we became alarmed by his glaringly outrageous votes and remarks on so many issues
critical to American National Security," said Ms. Adams.
"On America, Senator Hagel agreed with assertions made during his appearance on Al Jezeera Radio that the United States is 'the world's bully.'
"He has also stated that the Department of Defense budget is 'bloated.'"
"While we maintain that savings can be found in every federal department and
agency, we think it incredible that a Defense Secretary nominee would have so blatantly portrayed US defense spending in such a negative light.
"On Israel, Senator Hagel's apparent hostility to our only reliable ally in the Middle East is disturbing. What does he mean when he says the American Jewish lobby 'intimidates a lot of people?' Who, exactly, does it intimidate?
"Does Senator Hagel believe that Christian and Jewish Americans have no right to voice concerns regarding the existence of the state of Israel? Where are his voiced objections to the terrorist behaviors of Hamas and Hezbollah?
"Why, over the years, has he criticized Israel's use of military force to defend itself from the hostile military attacks of its neighbors?
"On Iran, Senator Hagel opposed unilateral US sanctions on a nation determined to annihilate Israel and refused to endorse an effort to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
"In yesterday's hearing, he had to be reminded that US policy was to prevent, not contain, Iran's development of nuclear weapons.
"On Iraq, Senator Hagel opposed the surge of US troops which led to the stabilization of that nation and the successful outcome of a war in which many Americans sacrificed their lives.
"Senator John McCain stated that Senator Hagel was 'on the wrong side of history' in relation to the Iraq War.
"We think Senator Hagel has been on the wrong side of history on so many critical matters--and so has the President who nominated him," said Ms. Adams.

The Independence Hall Tea Party Association formed after historic February 28 and April 18, 2009 Tea Parties on Independence Mall. It is the oldest and largest independent grassroots Tea Party organization in the tri-state (DE, NJ, PA) region and encompasses the 5th leading media market in the United States.
With 55 Democrat votes in the Senate, Barack Obama's cabinet nominations should be a slam dunk. But in recent days, many senators refused to take a position on Obama's controversial nomination of former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense. They said that they would wait until after the confirmation hearing to make a decision.
The hearing is over and Hagel's fate remains far from certain. The blogosphere was ablaze yesterday with many liberals describing Hagel's performance as a "disaster." CNN'sDana Bash reported that senators were "shocked" and in a state of "disbelief" after the hearings. You can see why here.
Among other astonishing statements yesterday, Hagel said the following:
"A number of questions were asked of me today about specific programs: submarine programs, different areas of technology and acquisitions and our superior technology. And I've said, I don't know enough about it. I don't. There are a lot of things I don't know about."
As the Wall Street Journal points out, Hagel's ignorance may be understandable given that he "was never on the Armed Services Committee." Yet this is the man Barack Obama has selected to lead the Pentagon.
Now here's a reminder about the difficulty conservatives are facing when it comes to the bias of Big Media. As I reported yesterday, Republican senators were well-prepared and aggressive in their questioning of Hagel. But CBS devoted only 45 seconds to Hagel's hearing last night, and NBC did not cover it at all. When Republicans are at their best, the left-wing media often ignore them.
A homicide bomber blew himself up attempting to enter the U.S. embassy in Ankara, Turkey, today. The blast killed one guard and injured two others as well as a Turkish journalist.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but I believe it exposes Obama's oft-repeated reelection lie that "Al Qaeda has been decimated." In fact, Obama's entire foreign policy has been a disaster.
Under Obama, jihadists attacked our consulate in Benghazi and murdered our ambassador and three other Americans. A natural gas facility in Algeria was attacked by Al Qaeda thugs whose only goal was to kill "Christians and infidels."
Al Qaeda militants control large swaths of North Africa. Radical Islamists are taking over country after country in the Middle East. Syria is in a civil war and its stockpiles of chemical weapons are in jeopardy of falling into the hands of terrorists. Now Egypt's top general is warning that his country could collapse into chaos.
Unemployment Up
Today's employment report brought more evidence of the failure of Barack Obama's economic policies. The unemployment rate increased to 7.9%. Once again more adults left the workforce (169,000) than found new jobs (157,000).
Putting these dismal numbers into perspective, Professor Peter Morici of the University of Maryland writes:
"The economy would have to add about 13.9 million jobs over the next three years -- about 363,000 each month -- to bring unemployment down to 6 percent. That would require GDP growth in the range of 4 to 5 percent."
That does not seem likely under Obama's tax-hiking, overregulating regime. By the way, gas prices are setting record highs too.
The sad reality is that Obama's economy stinks. Economic growth shrank last quarter. Democrats are complaining that the economy shrank because of a reduction in government spending. Thus, they claim that what the economy really needs right now is more stimulus spending.
There is some merit to their argument, but their solution is wrong. Military spending was down last quarter. But no liberal Democrat is suggesting we spend more on the military. To Democrats, food stamps and paying people not to work are stimulus programs.
FBI Raids Office Of Big Democrat Donor
The FBI raided the West Palm Beach office of Dr. Salomon Melgen Tuesday on charges that he owes millions in back taxes. We will follow news of this investigation closely as it is likely to have far-ranging consequences beyond the state of Florida. Dr. Melgen is a big time Democrat donor and a major patron of New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez.
Conservative news sites broke a story last year that Menendez solicited underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. Big Media ignored the story, which Menendez dismissed as an election-year smear campaign. It has resurfaced in recent days, just as Menendez prepares, somewhat ironically, to assume the chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Last week The Daily Caller released emails indicating the FBI was pursuing the allegations. So what's the connection to Dr. Melgen?
Menendez reportedly took several trips to the Dominican Republic onboard Dr. Melgen's private jet. Last month, Menendez reimbursed Dr. Melgen nearly $60,000 for the cost of those flights.
In addition to the prostitutes, the New York Times reports that Dr. Melgen, an eye surgeon, recently bought into a company that had a "long-dormant contract" to provide port security in the Dominican Republic. His good friend Senator Menendez used his influence to make sure that the $500 million contract would be enforced.
Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid should, at a minimum, prevent Senator Menendez from assuming the chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee until this investigation is complete. If Menendez is forced to resign, New Jersey's Republican Governor, Chris Christie, would appoint his replacement. Stay tuned!
What Ever Happened To Football?
I still remember when the Super Bowl used to be about tough, manly football players going out on the gridiron and pummeling each other until one team claimed the trophy. The week before the game would feature rhetorical "chest thumping" insults and heated discussions about the talent of the players.
Alas the football of my youth is disappearing and being replaced by political correctness and left-wing posturing. This year seems particularly putrid with the media focused on whether Beyonce will lip sync the national anthem (she promises to actually sing it this time) and whether San Francisco cornerback Chris Culliver should be drawn and quartered.
Culliver sinned against the Gospel of Liberalism when he answered a question posed by shock jock Artie Lang, who asked if there were homosexuals on the San Francisco 49ers team. Here is Culliver's answer:
"I don't do the gay guys man. I don't do that. No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can't be with that sweet stuff. Nah...can't be...in the locker room man. Nah."
I will skip over the fact that Mr. Culliver is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he apparently missed a few English classes. But what offended the cultural storm troopers was not his elucidation but that he dared to suggest he would not be comfortable if there were homosexual men in the locker room. Oh the horror!
Before the week was over, there were calls for him to be suspended from the team and fined by the NFL. The 49ers coach made it clear that Mr. Culliver will be forced after the game to spend time with the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered community in order to acquire the proper attitude. By next season, he'll be singing show tunes and expounding on the virtues of same-sex "marriage."
Here's my unsolicited advice to Mr. Culliver or any other pro-football player who is asked about the homosexual agenda: Just respond by attacking Tim Tebow or any other player who is openly Christian. It is okay in the NFL to tell them that they should stay in the closet.

What system of law has resulted in every single country from which we removed inconvenient dictators using American blood, treasure and technology? Inconvenient dictators - all Muslim rulers are dictators. The inconvenient ones had the temerity to trade with Israel and somewhat tolerate Christians and Jews in their countries.
Was the result a democratic society with freedom of the press and religion? A model based on the freedoms and cautions expressed in the Declaration of Independence which gives the Constitution meaning (and why people have historically risked life and limb to become part of)?
Nope, none of the above. The answer is Sharia! Sharia is a theocratic legal system inextricably tied to the Qur'an which also features the religion of Islam exclusively. In July of 2012, Janet Napolitano's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) produced a "show and tell" video instructing Americans on the best course of action should they suddenly find themselves in an "active shooter" situation.
Entitled Run, Hide, Fight, the Big Sis-approved, 6 minute epic provided potential victims with crucial advice, such as "run away," and "remain out of sight of the shooter." Naturally, that's the sort of counsel only government can provide. (1)
Noticeably absent from the DHS tutorial, however, was any discussion of REAL weapons in the hands of prospective victims. Apparently firearms were not permitted in the "gun free zone" building chosen by the Mayor of Houston for the making of the Department-sponsored film. (2)
Israeli warplanes reportedly stuck a convoy of weapons, inside Syria, that was destined for Hezbollah in Lebanon. The convoy was carrying Russian manufactured SA-17 missiles to be used by the terrorist organization to target Israeli Aircraft. Israel publicly warned Syria that it would take action to prevent the shipment of weapons to any terrorist group, especially chemical weapons. Israeli intelligence has been monitoring the areas between Syria and Lebanon for any sign of weapons convoys. (1)

The SA-17 (Grizzly) is a mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system and in terrorist hands would curtail Israel's ability to operate near or in Lebanese airspace against terrorist targets. It would be seen as a "game changer" in the region and a direct threat to Israel. (2) Hezbollah can use the SA-17 to protect its missile launching sites and convoy routes from Syria and protecting terrorists from retaliatory airstrikes.
By providing Hezbollah SA-17 systems, who knows what the ... Continue Reading:Israel Strikes
To the media the only thing that counts is moving its agenda.
Is his name Jerome Jordan? Is it Jerome McCorry? Is he really a reverend? We just don't really know, but there are a few things we do know about this man. He is a convicted rapist and an anti- gun activist. And he is being used by the media to further its anti-gun agenda. The fact that their agenda will make the job of rapists like Jerome easier by disarming innocent women means nothing to them.
Jerome McCorry who has used the name Jerome Jordan in is raping career, is a hulking 6'1" 280 pounder who apparently still doesn't like his odds for committing his next rape and getting away without being shot by his victim. EDWARD I. KOCH
Six days ago, Ed Koch described the tombstone that he had arranged for himself. "On my tombstone, which awaits me at the Trinity Church nondenominational cemetery at 155th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, I had inscribed the last words of Daniel Pearl - uttered at his publicly viewed murder - which were, "My father is Jewish. My mother is Jewish. I am Jewish."
After the latest September 11 attacks, he had written, "Will we have the resolve to stand up and protect the lifestyles and mores of western civilization now under attack by the Islamists in a war that can and will probably last for decades or will we ultimately surrender? I believe we will fight for our freedoms as we did in World War II and once again prevail."
ANOTHER TIME, WE'LL GO TO MARS
Apparently the last Mars mission determined once and for all that there are no Muslims on Mars making further visits there unnecessary. Also deeply disappointing to Obama was that despite its name of the"Red Planet", what looked like a giant image of Marx's head, turned out to just be a volcanic formation.
We could have paid for the entire Mars mission with the money that Obama gave to the Muslim Brotherhood regime in Egypt. But Obama has his priorities.
The Army has stopped serving cooked breakfasts to some of the U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan as part of its drawdown, a move that prompted troops to write home asking their families and friends to send care packages with cereal, breakfast bars and other foods.
Meanwhile here is what Obama and his corrupt cronies had for their inaugural lunch. Steamed Lobster with New England Clam Chowder Sauce, Sautéed Spinach, Sweet Potato Hay Second Course: Hickory-Grilled Bison with Red Potato Horseradish Cake, Butternut Squash Purée, Baby Golden Beets.
If only American soldiers in Afghanistan were unemployed Democratic voters in Chicago, then they might be getting three square meals a day from the government.

First they came for the Cakemakers.
Over in Oregon, two lesbians came to Sweet Cakes and demanded a wedding cake. The owner let them know that he only does cakes for men and women looking to get married. No sooner did the door close than the Oregon Department of Justice, which had already solved all the other crimes in the state, began an investigation.
Aaron and Melissa Klein, their 3 kids and their little cake shop (caramel pecan cheesecake available) had run afoul of the political establishment. "I'd rather have my kids see their dad stand up for what he believes in," Klein said, "then to see him bow down because one person complained."
Bowing down is the expected position these days. You either bow down or get fined and prosecuted to death.
The latest wave of laws on abortion and gay marriage are meant to make it impossible to hold beliefs, religious or otherwise, in contradiction to those of the state. That's a somewhat new phenomenon in the United States, but a familiar one in Europe. And the consequence of these Orwellian measures is the stratification of these societies into three categories.
The Party - This is the group whose dogma is legislated into law in a thousand formal and informal ways. Its members may belong to the government or non-profits that act as a collective political movement pushing to enact and implement even the most radical elements of that dogma. Or they may still work actual jobs. But it doesn't really make much of a difference.
Members of the Party are a minority, but they are the vanguard, the ideologically committed core that acts as the ruling class and the force for political conformity. Party Members report thought-crimes to the government, swarm as morality mobs to shame and denounce dissenters and campaign and vote for tighter restrictions and harsher penalties.
The Party is inflexibly liberal. It hasn't formed into a single group yet, but in its scattered pieces, it is the nexus of the American version of the Bolsheviks. In some European countries it already is a party with its own attached youth movements.
And one of the benefits of Party membership is virtual immunity from its own laws. Being a Party member allows you to have the racial sensitivity of Harry Reid, the sexual harassment cred of Bill Clinton and the environmental correctness of Al Gore's mansion, jets and Al Jazeera sale.
The law is enforced by Party members on the People. It is infrequently enforced by Party members against fellow Party members.
The People - For the most part the people neither fully accept nor reject the agenda of the Party. Some of it, mainly the parts about a social safety net and tolerance, sound nice to them, though they also don't care much for the implementation of it. They are concerned about the deterioration of their societies, but fail to make the connection to the liberal social policies that flood their cities with immigrants and favor criminals and dole-hounds.
As the Party gains more influence, the People have largely learned to keep their heads down, to mumble the right slogans that are repeated on the evening news and to stay out of trouble. The People care very little for politics. They distrust the agendas of everyone running for office, but they have been largely taught to vote their very short term economic interests. And while they won't call and inform on dissidents, they believe that most people who get caught up in the Party's web could have avoided it by keeping quiet.
Meanwhile, Tehran's official news agency calls WND 'mouthpiece of CIA'
by Reza Kahlili
The explosions at Iran's Fordow nuclear facility Jan. 21 killed at least 40 people, including two North Koreans, WND learned Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Islamic regime is labeling WND a "mouthpiece of the CIA" for its exclusive reporting of the blasts.
The bodies of 11 of the technicians and scientists are beyond recognition, a member of the security forces at the facility told WND. According to this source, 60 others are in critical condition and have been transferred to the central base of the 27th Division of Mohammad Rassool Allah, which is equipped with a modern medical facility and is between Tehran and Qom.
At the time of the explosions, the source said, 203 Iranian scientists and technicians along with 16 North Koreans had been logged in at the site, though the initial report listed 240 people.
President Obama is empowering America's enemies. After all, it is not just Obama. When it comes to abetting the Muslim Brotherhood, Republicans are right there with him.
Not all of them, of course. This week, for example, Senator Rand Paul proposed an amendment that would have prohibited our government from transferring F-16 aircraft and Abrams tanks to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government. This lunatic plan is not just an Obama initiative. It is also a GOP brainstorm - of a piece with 2011's Libya debacle, in which Republican leaders cheered as Obama, upon consulting with the Arab League, ignored Congress and levied war on behalf of the very jihadists who, quite predictably, have since raided Qaddafi's arsenal, besieged northern Africa, and massacred Americans in Benghazi.
A few weeks back, the John McCain & Lindsey Graham roadshow made its way to Brotherhood Central in Cairo, with newcomer Kelly Ayotte in tow. Senator Ayotte appears to have filled the void created by Joe Lieberman's retirement - after all, when you have Republicans, who needs another Democrat? The former trio is best remembered for its Tripoli triumph of late 2009, when the three kicked back in the Qaddafi compound and toasted our newly cozy relations with the dictator. The bipartisan solons then winged their way home in time to second the Obama State Department's increase in funding for the Libyan dictator's regime. After all, they reasoned, Qaddafi was our hedge against Libya's jihadists. As is their wont, though, the solons soon dazzled us with a 180, suddenly deciding that what we really needed to do was back Libya's jihadists in their war against Qaddafi. The rest, as they say in Mali, is history.
So the GOP brain trust now brings this Midas touch to Egypt, rallying behind Obama's cozy relations with the new "Islamic democracy." That would be the Brotherhood's rapidly unraveling sharia basket case, into which our own bankrupt government has so far sunk nearly 3 billion U.S.-taxpayer dollars, with more billions soon to come through U.S.-backed IMF loans and, yes, sophisticated U.S. weaponry. Any moment now, as it was in turbulent Libya, the ground in Egypt is certain to shift, or crater. When it does, who knows whose side the senators will have us on . . . and who knows what American enemies may be wielding that U.S. weaponry?
Senator Paul, by contrast, has three ideas that seem positively batty to the McCain gang. First, he thinks that American foreign policy ought to be premised on American national interests, not on the shifting notions of "global stability" popular at the Wilson School and the Council on Foreign Relations. Second, he suggests that when we give aid and arms to anti-American Islamists, bad things tend to happen to America. Finally, Paul believes the foundation of American foreign policy is, of all quaint things, the United States Constitution. The Framers gave Congress not merely the authority but the duty to thwart executive excess. On the international stage, that primarily means the power of the purse, which enables the people's representatives to defund such madness as the arming of Islamic supremacists.
So Senator Paul tried to stop weapons transfer. His amendment, however, was defeated 79-19, because 23 Republican senators opted to follow the lead of McCain, Graham, and Ayotte.
Senate immigration plan would give Napolitano final say on border security By Alexander Bolton
Under a bipartisan Senate framework, Democrats say, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano would have final say over whether the border is secure enough to put 11 million illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship.
If Napolitano does not provide the green light for putting illegal immigrants on a pathway to citizenship, the responsibility for judging whether the metrics for border security have been met will be given to her successor.
The early debate over immigration reform has yielded two thorny questions: What metrics will be used to determine whether the goals for border security and other safeguards against illegal immigration have been met? Who will decide whether the metrics have been achieved?
After the American economy delivered more bad news today in the form of an increase in the unemployment rate and job growth that barely kept up with the increase in population, it took exactly 4.3476 seconds for the Washington Post's Ezra Klein and some flak for NBC News to jump before the "Morning Joe" cameras to assure Americans this was good news.
Apparently, the increase in the unemployment rate means the economy is so good, more people are joining the labor force ... except 169,000 people dropped out of the labor force and the economy isn't good; it collapsed over three points in the last quarter and shrunk 0.1.

Rove Declares War on Tea Party
by Ben Shapiro 3 Feb 2013
The battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party has begun. On one side is the Tea Party. On the other side stand Karl Rove and his establishment team, posing as tacticians while quietly undermining conservatism.
Yesterday, the New York Timesreported that the "biggest donors in the Republican Party" have joined forces with Karl Rove and Steven J. Law, president of American Crossroads, to create the Conservative Victory Project. The Times reports that this new group will dedicate itself to "recruit seasoned candidates and protect Senate incumbents from challenges by far-right conservatives and Tea Party enthusiasts who Republican leaders worry could complicate the party's effort to win control of the Senate." The group points to candidates like Christine O'Donnell in Delaware and Richard Mourdock in Indiana as examples of Tea Party primary picks going sideways in major Senatorial battles.
But it is American Crossroads and its ilk that have run the GOP into the ground. Spending millions of dollars on useless 30,000-ft. advertising campaigns during the last election cycle, training candidates to soften conservatism in order to appeal to "moderates," blowing up the federal budget under George W. Bush as a bipartisan tactic - all of those strategies led the party to a disastrous defeat in 2012. The Tea Party, which may nominate losers from time to time, also brought the Republicans their historic 2010 Congressional victory. If Tea Party candidates lose, it's because they weren't good candidates; if GOP establishment candidates lose, it's because they weren't good conservatives. The choice for actual conservatives should be easy.

It's a rarity, but there's good news on the gun front.
A judge has ruled that, after a year and a half behind bars, Rick and Ryin Reese of New Mexico can be released on bail.

The Boy Scouts of America is about to be torn apart.
In one respect, it doesn't matter what BSA's board members decide when they meet next week - to change their long-standing policy excluding avowed homosexuals, or not to change their policy. Either way, the Boy Scouts of America will not emerge unscathed. It will be bloodied. It will be hurt. The only question is: When the dust settles, which side will the 100-year-old organization be on?
The reputation of the Boy Scouts of America has always rested on moral integrity, leadership and adherence to principle.
Moral integrity, leadership and adherence to principle are exactly what the Scouts need to employ now to resist the onslaught from those who oppose those values. Unfortunately, the organization's leaders are instead ready to trade them away.
Here's the sorry tale of how this happened ... it's a lesson in what other "traditional values" organizations will face.

Barack Obama is coming to Minneapolis tomorrow to talk guns, his first such foray since he called for increased gun control after the Sandy Hook massacre. Timed, presumably, to coincide with his appearance, Democrats in Minnesota's legislature have introduced several draconian gun control measures. I wrote here about one of these statutes, which would ban, and provide for confiscation of, all normal-sized magazines.
Liberals often ridicule gun owners' fears that what the left really wants is to confiscate firearms, but in Minnesota the Democrats make no pretense: they are pushing confiscation legislation, unapologetically. H.F. 241 relates to "assault weapons." It defines "assault weapons" in more or less the usual way; I haven't compared it line by line to Dianne Feinstein's federal legislation, but the definition is similar if not identical. "Assault weapons" include all semiautomatic rifles that have a pistol grip or a hole in the stock through which you can put your thumb; any "protruding grip that can be held by the nontrigger hand;" a folding or telescopic stock; or a barrel shroud. So, what is it about a hole in the stock, a "protruding grip," a folding stock and so on that explains why such weapons should be singled out for banning by the state? Nothing. These features have nothing to do with lethality and bear no rational relation to any legitimate governmental purpose.
"Assault weapons" also include handguns if they have analogous cosmetic features, like a "protruding grip that can be held by the nontrigger hand" or a barrel shroud "allowing the bearer to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned." How these features justify banning essentially random handguns is inexplicable.
Under the Democrats' legislation, no one can buy or possess an "assault weapon" in Minnesota. If you already own one as of February 1, you can keep it. But you have to register it, and give the state permission to inspect your home-which is the only place you can keep the "assault weapon"-to make sure you are storing it properly, and undergo annual background checks. You can't sell the firearm or give it away, and when you die, your heirs are required to either destroy it or "surrender the weapon to a law enforcement agency for destruction." So the statute represents a ban, followed by confiscation.
Why the legislation singles out "assault weapons," as defined, is a mystery. As we have noted many times, hardly any murders are committed with rifles, let alone the ones liberals define as "assault weapons." Bare hands are a more popular murder weapon, not to mention knives and blunt objects. The Democrats can't possibly believe that legislation that relies on cosmetic definitions untethered to any functional reality will do any good. So what's the point?
Candidly, I am having a hard time understanding the Democrats' strategy. At the national level, they must know that they can't pass anything significant through the House, and probably not even through the Senate-Harry Reid likely won't even allow gun control legislation to come up for a vote. (The only exception is some tweaking, probably minor, of the rules relating to background checks.) I think the national Democrats are mainly trying to fire up their base for the 2014 elections by pursuing the lost cause of gun control.
But how to explain initiatives like those in Minnesota? I don't think the Democrats can pass gun and magazine confiscation measures, even though they control both houses of the legislature, because Democrats who represent districts outside the Twin Cities won't vote for them. So why would the Democrats' leadership even bring such statutes up for a vote? Doing so exposes their members to taking an unpopular stand, with no hope of passage. And yet the Democrats are doubling down: not only are Minnesota's Democrats introducing firearms confiscation legislation, but Barack Obama is coming to town to put a spotlight on their proposals.
I don't get it, but I think I like it, politically speaking.
The two major non-budgetary legislative battles on the horizon pertain to immigration and guns. Both struggles will be bitter and divisive.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, considering the stakes. However, the divisions in Washington will obscure the fact that a consensus exists, or can fairly easily be built, on both issues.
On immigration, conservatives want improved border security. Liberals say they support improved border security but demand, as its condition, amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegal aliens once there is some sort of confirmation that the border has been secured. And both sides appear to be fine when it comes to "guest worker" reform.
The consensus position would be improved border security as a condition for amnesty, but without a path to citizenship. The tricky work would remain of figuring out how to determine if/when the border is secure. But if this technical issue can be resolved, I believe the resulting compromise would likely enjoy the widespread support of the American public. And, personally, although I'm philosophically opposed to amnesty, the compromise would be acceptable.
Unfortunately, this compromise won't happen. The Democrats will insist on a path to citizenship for millions of virtually sure-thing future Dem voters and, if they don't get it, will use the outcome to lock down the current Hispanic vote. They are in a win-win situation, although the bigger win is the path to citizenship.
On guns, the Democrats are pushing for a ban on certain types of weapons and the broadening of background checks. The ban looks like a non-starter politically. It is also questionable on the merits because (1) it seems to be founded on dubious distinctions among types of weaponry and (2) there is insufficient evidence that this type of ban worked in the past.
But a reasonable expansion of background checks makes sense to me and, I believe, to many conservatives and a strong majority of Americans. For example, Ben Shapiro, in his contentious exchange with Piers Morgan that Steve highlighted here, expressed his support for such reform. It was, I think, the only issue on which Shapiro and Morgan agreed.
Again, though, the Democrats can be expected to take an all-or-nothing approach. In the case of guns, they are likely to get nothing. With immigration reform, they may get pretty close to all, but we will see.
In an interesting side show to immigration reform, Democrats would like to change the law so that foreign nationals in same sex marriages can obtain spousal visas. According to the Washington Post, this would enable up to 40,000 such foreign nationals to apply for legal residency and then U.S. citizenship.
But the idea has prompted strong opposition from Republicans and from some Christian organizations that support comprehensive immigration reform. Sensing the danger of bringing the gay agenda into the immigration reform debate, John McCain asks, "What's more important, LGBT [lesbian, gay bisexual, or transgender concerns] or border security?"
For Democrats, the question answers itself. They care little, if at all, about border security and plenty about "LGBT."
The real question for Democrats is: What's more important, enlisting millions of new Democratic voters or standing up for "gay rights" at the periphery? That question also answers itself.
The matter will be resolved, I assume, by proposing a "biparitsan" comprehensive reform bill that doesn't speak to the spousal visa rights of gay couples and by an amendment by Democrats to address "LGBT." The amendment will be defeated, but the Dems will have given it the old college try.
By now most everyone has seen or heard about Ben Shaprio's magnificent smackdown of the egregious Piers Morgan on CNN a few weeks back (posted below). If people didn't know of Ben before then, they enjoyed a star-in-the-making moment. But even a natural talent usually has some important help along the way, and in Ben's case, it was the Claremont Institute's Publius Fellows program. Ben was among the 2006 class of this distinguished program; other Publius alumni include freshman Rep. Tom Cotton, radio host Laura Ingraham, and many other up and coming stars of the conservative world. The application deadline for this year's program is March 1; you can download an application at the link above.
We awoke Friday to the announcement that NBC News president Steve Capus was "resigning" (that is, fired), and the only wonder is that he wasn't fired Thursday evening after the national broadcast. I made the mistake of taking in NBC's national news broadcast Thursday evening, and it fell below even the usual low standards for network news bias and reportorial incompetence.
NBC essentially handed off their lead story to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. You can watch the whole broadcast at this link if you are a glutton for punishment. Brian Williams leads with the Brady Campaign's latest death-by-firearms figures, without qualifying how many were due to gang violence, and without any mention, or curiosity, about how many crimes were prevented in the same time period by law-abiding gun owners. (In the whole segment there was only one 10-second clip from an opponent of gun control.) I suppose NBC thinks that if gun control is enacted, all those gang bangers will obey the law and turn in their guns. Like they do in Chicago. Oops.
Actually, NBC gets around to Chicago in its story, and champions the line that Chicago police are taking 200 officers out from behind their desks and putting them out on the street to combat gun violence. Did anyone think to ask Chicago what those 200 officers were doing "behind their desks" in the first place? No; instead, the story bemoans that outlying areas don't have gun control and hence there's a flow of guns into Chicago. So sure, let's enact strict nationwide gun control to stop this "loophole," and cut off the flow of guns from Mexico just as surely as we've stopped the flow of illegal drugs.
Pathetic.
As a special bonus media bias feature, check out CBS from last Sunday, with Georgetown Law professor Louis Seidman presenting his case "Let's Give Up on the Constitution" that we commented upon when Seidman first wrote this in the New York Times. Wonder if CBS will give air time for anyone on the other side?
Chuck Hagel's prevarications in his Senate testimony this week about the prevarications of the Obama Administration's Iran policy brought to mind one of Churchill's characterizations of British government policy about disarmament in the early 1930s-what at other times he described more simply as "mush, slush, and gush." But this 1934 comment comes close to capturing the essence of Obama's own brand of mush, slush, and gush about Iran:
It is only a little while ago that I heard ministers say, and read diplomatic documents which said, that rearmament was unthinkable-"Whatever happens, we cannot have that. Rearmament is unthinkable." Now all our hope is to regulate the unthinkable. Regulated unthinkability-that is the proposal now; and very soon it will be a question of making up our minds to unregulated unthinkability."
A reader wrote back in early January with speculation that many of Obama's dubious prospective appointments-Rice for state, Lew for treasury, Hagel for defense, and now Todd Jones for ATF-might be part of a deliberate strategy to provoke GOP filibusters such that Harry Reid would have more cover to eliminate the filibuster, notwithstanding the recent small-bore deal between Reid and McConnell. As Mr. G wrote:
Three obviously partisan picks meant to generate highly publicized, partisan confirmation hearings and opposition from the R's ... Does this not appear to be a set up for Harry Reid to eliminate the filibuster to ease in radical leftist justices to the Supreme Court? I can hear Reid now, "We had to eliminate the filibuster on nominations because those awful R's won't confirm any of Obama's picks ..."
Hard to know about how Machiavellian Obama might be. But in pondering this (and preparing for class next week), I had occasion to recur to Federalist 76, where Hamilton discussed the president's appointment power in relation to the Senate "advise and consent" role through the confirmation process:
It will readily be comprehended, that a man who had himself the sole disposition of offices, would be governed much more by his private inclinations and interests, than when he was bound to submit the propriety of his choice to the discussion and determination of a different and independent body, and that body an entire branch of the legislature. The possibility of rejection would be a strong motive to care in proposing. The danger to his own reputation, and, in the case of an elective magistrate, to his political existence, from betraying a spirit of favoritism, or an unbecoming pursuit of popularity, to the observation of a body whose opinion would have great weight in forming that of the public, could not fail to operate as a barrier to the one and to the other. He would be both ashamed and afraid to bring forward, for the most distinguished or lucrative stations, candidates who had no other merit than that of coming from the same State to which he particularly belonged, or of being in some way or other personally allied to him, or of possessing the necessary insignificance and pliancy to render them the obsequious instruments of his pleasure.
It would seem Obama has little shame putting forth nominees who have "no other merit than that of . . . [being] personally allied to him." This suggests that Obama, who reportedly seldom talks to members of Congress even from his own party, has little regard for the first branch of government. It's one thing to provoke Republicans into furious opposition, but do you really want to make your own party vote for an obvious turkey like Hagel? If I were Harry Reid I wouldn't be pleased.
Chuck Hinton, an outfielder for the Washington Senators and the Cleveland Indians during the 1960s and early 1970s, died this week at age 78. Hinton was the first African-American baseball player who plied his trade in predominantly black Washington, DC to be perceived as a star.
Actually, Earl Battey, who played for the pre-expansion Senators, was probably a better player than Hinton. But Battey, a catcher, found himself overshadowed by teammates like Harmon Killebrew, Bob Allison, Jim Lemon, and Camilo Pascual. Hinton, a speedy outfielder, easily outshone his teammates on some very poor expansion squads.
In 1962, Hinton batted .310 and stole 28 bases in 38 attempts. As this was only Hinton's second year in the big leagues, most Washington fans thought we had a phenom on our hands. Had we understood baseball statistics better, we would have noted that Hinton was already 27 years old, and that he didn't walk enough. But we still would have recognized him as a breath of fresh air on a team in desperate need of one.
It's not clear why Hinton arrived in the Majors so late. His career Minor League batting average was .346. It looks like a late start (he began his career at age 22 after his college education and later missed two years due to a hitch in the military) was to blame.
One cannot discount racism as a possible explanation. However, I believe that Baltimore Orioles, the organization for whom Hinton played, liked Hinton. Although they didn't protect him in the expansion draft, Paul Richards reportedly planted a phony story in the Sporting News ("the Baseball Bible") that Hinton was injured. When the expansion Senators drafted Hinton anyway, the "Wizard of Waxahachie" is said to have complained, "What's the matter with the Senators; don't they read the Paper?"
New York Yankee pitcher Ralph Terry beaned Hinton late in the 1963 season. Hinton suffered a concussion, and was never quite the same hitter thereafter. However, he played well enough in 1964 to represent Washington in the All Star game. He entered the contest late and didn't get to bat. His contribution consisted of watching Johnny Callison's walk-off home run sail over his head and into the seats.
The Senators traded Hinton to Cleveland before the 1965 season. He was ordinary with the Indians, but good enough to remain with the club for six years. Hinton's career stats - .264/.332/.412 with 113 homers and 130 steals- understate his talent. With an earlier start and no beaning, surely the numbers would have been more impressive.
After the big leagues, Hinton became a successful baseball coach at Howard University. He also helped found the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, an organization promotes baseball to young people and has raised millions of dollars for charity. Reportedly, he had time for anyone who needed his help or who just wanted to talk about baseball.
You probably won't find anyone in the D.C. area with a bad word to say about Chuck Hinton. He was a good ballplayer and an exemplary citizen.
Mark Steyn's weekly column is posted at NRO as "Containing Hagel." Subhead: "Tehran is pleased that we aren't." Steyn does the Steynian thing with Hagel's almost unbelievable performance before the Senate Armed Services Committee this week. Among other things, Mark rescues a few of Hagel's quotable quotes before they are overlooked by Bartlett's Familiar Quotations and recede into the mists of the Age of Obama.
Iran figured prominently in Hagel's mysterious misspeaking:
He warmed up with a little light "misspeaking" on Iran. "I support the president's strong position on containment," he declared.
But not for long:
"I was just handed a note that I misspoke, that I said I supported the president's position on containment [of Iran]. If I said that, I meant to say that we don't have a position on containment."
This clarification required the intercession of Senator Carl Levin as a sort of deux ex machina to rescue the protagonist. Then Senator Gillibrand descended to lend a hand:
After he'd hailed Iran's "elected, legitimate government," it fell to another Democrat, Kirsten Gillibrand, to prompt Hagel to walk it back. Okay, delete "elected" and "legitimate":
"What I meant to say, should have said, is that it's recognizable."
Getting closer all the time! Here Steyn gives credit where credit is due:
"I don't understand Iranian politics," he announced in perhaps his least misspoken statement of the day. But the Iranians understand ours, which is why, in an amusing touch, the foreign ministry in Tehran has enthusiastically endorsed Hagel.
More material for the editors of Bartlett's, not that they have the wit to use it:
"There are a lot of things I don't know about," said Hagel. "If confirmed, I intend to know a lot more than I do."
"I intend to know a lot more than I do." Is it too late make it the motto of Faber College?
You can really appreciate this too, so long as you don't have to worry about the Secretary of Defense having any responsibility for the national security of the United States:
He then denied that "I will be running anything." Don't let the fact that the secretary of defense presides over 40 percent of the entire planet's military spending confuse you. He's not really "running" a thing - or, as he was anxious to assure us, "I won't be in a policy-making position."
The transcript verifies that Hagel actually said this without any Obama administration staffer passing him a note to clarify his testimony:
Late in the day, after five o'clock, he pronounced definitively: "It doesn't matter what I think."
Former Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen is an AEI fellow, a Washington Post columnist, and author of Courting Disaster: How the CIA Kept America Safe and How Obama Is Inviting the Next Attack. When it comes to the techniques used by the CIA to interrogate detainees in the aftermath of 9/11, Thiessen knows what he is talking about. Prompted by the controversy over Kathryn Bigelow's film Zero Dark Thirty and its portrayal of the hunt for bin Laden. Thiessen moderated an AEI forum this past Tuesday with a few witnesses who speak from experience in separating fact from fiction:
Gen. Michael Hayden (ret.), former director of the CIA, suggested that enhanced interrogation techniques were never used to elicit information in the moment, but to move detainees out of the "zone of defiance" and toward cooperation. Hayden argued that it is incredibly unlikely that the raid in Abbottabad would have been successful without the help of intelligence gained from CIA detainees.
John A. Rizzo, former chief legal officer at the CIA, stressed that while the public can disagree on how big a role enhanced interrogation techniques played in the hunt for bin Laden, the intelligence collection component was paramount for the first years of the search. Jose Rodriguez, former director of the National Clandestine Service, concluded by saying that the Obama administration's narrative conveyed that enhanced interrogations were torture and useless, but reality belies this view. The intelligence obtained at black sites was key.
The forum has not elicited much attention. One exception is Will Saletan in the obtusely titled Slate column "The case for torture," providing a useful summary of the proceedings from the hostile point of view reflected in the title of his column.
AEI has posted the audio, video, and transcript of the event here. This is an important subject in so many ways. Thiessen and AEI have performed a public service in hosting this forum and making it accessible to the public. The video is below. Please check it out.
It's not just Washington: all across the country, the Democratic Party is trying to rob firearm owners of their constitutional rights. Here in Minnesota, the Democrats took control of both houses of the legislature in November, and they have wasted no time launching an attack on the 2nd Amendment. House Public Safety Committee Chairman Michael Paymar-"public safety" apparently doesn't include self-defense-is
A standard capacity, single-stack magazine
introducing a series of anti-gun proposals, including a ban on scary-looking rifles which, as far as I know, has not yet been reduced to writing, and this bill, H.F. 243, which would ban normal-sized magazines. The bill bans the sale, transfer or possession by private citizens of all magazines with more than a seven-round capacity.
Moreover, the Minnesota bill, unlike Dianne Feinstein's federal proposal, does not grandfather magazines that are now legally owned. Rather, it require Minnesota gun owners to "(1) remove the large-capacity magazine from the state; or (2) surrender the large-capacity magazine to a law enforcement agency for destruction" within 120 days after the statute's effective date. Anyone who now legally owns normal-capacity magazines-like me, for example-will be subject to five years' imprisonment if he fails to turn them in to the government.
Under Heller and McDonald, it is settled that Americans have a constitutional right to possess handguns for purposes of self-defense. The overwhelming majority of handguns in the United States are semiautomatics. A semiautomatic handgun is essentially inoperable without a magazine. (I suppose you could put a single bullet in the chamber and use the gun like an old-fashioned derringer, but that would reduce its value for self-defense to close to the vanishing point.) The vast majority of magazines have more than a seven-bullet capacity. There are some small pistols designed for concealed carry with magazines that limited, but any ordinary-sized pistol comes with a magazine that will hold at least ten bullets, and usually more. So a magazine that holds more than seven bullets is not "high capacity," it is "standard capacity."
A typical semiauto pistol and magazine
Requiring all standard capacity magazines to be turned in to the government would, at one stroke, disable the large majority of all handguns in Minnesota-guns which citizens have a constitutional right to own and to use. Can such a law possibly be constitutional? Second Amendment jurisprudence is not well developed, but it is hard to see how it could be. If this law were enacted, I expect that it would be met with widespread civil disobedience.
Democrats have majorities in both houses of the Minnesota legislature, so the bill will pass unless some Democrats have the courage to stand up for Minnesotans' civil rights. And nothing bucks up a legislator's courage like lots of phone calls. Mitch Berg has posted the names and phone numbers of all members of the Public Safety Committee, but these are the key ones-Democrats that represent gun-owning constituencies:
Please call or email as many of these individuals as you have time for, and ask them politely to respect Minnesotans' constitutional rights, and also advance the cause of public safety, by voting against H.F. 243.
John Kerry was sworn in as Secretary of State today. He took the occasion to claim that President Obama offered him the job a week before Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration.
You might think that, given the vicious anti-Americanism of his youth and his tendency to be wrong about nearly every major foreign policy issue since then, Kerry would be happy enough to get the job he has coveted for so long, without seeing a need to push back against evidence that he got the job by default. But then, you might have thought that Kerry would be happy enough to cite his service in Vietnam without making up tales about it, such as "Christmas in Cambodia."
Even in Kerry's version of events leading up up to his nomination, though, he was still Obama's second choice. His claim is that Obama offered him the job about a week before Rice withdrew. Until then, Obama wanted Rice to be his Secretary of State. Otherwise, he wouldn't have put her name out, causing her to twist in the wind generated by severe criticism over her statements pertaining to the Benghazi killings.
Assuming Kerry is telling the truth, one wonders why Obama left Rice twisting for an additional week. Did Obama share with Rice the news that he wanted Kerry, or did he leave it to her to see the writing on the wall?
It appears that the RNC has compiled the lowlights of Chuck Hagel's testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday, condensing them down to a mercifully brief 80 seconds. Quotable quote: "If I had an opportunity to edit that, like many things I said, I would like to go back and change the words and meaning," Hagel responded at one point to a question about a 2003 comment in which he referred to Israel keeping people "like caged animals." Translation: "I wish I hadn't said what I thought."
And this didn't even make the cut: "A number of questions were asked of me today about specific programs, submarine programs, different areas of technology and acquisitions, and our superior technology. I've said I do not know enough about it. I don't. There are a lot of things I don't know about. If confirmed, I intend to know a lot more than I do."
A few days ago we pondered the predictable ruckus over whether Volkswagen's Super Bowl ad was raaacciiist. Well, if the Volkswagen ad fails the test of the Sensitivity Police, why not this recent Discovery Card ad, which plays to the stereotype of female black dialect:
Here's the Volkswagen ad again, for reference and comparison:
There's a reason most people play little attention to what's left of the Civil Rights movement, unlike the 1950s and 1960s, when it had considerable moral authority.
At yesterday's hearing, Ted Cruz, in addition to showing that Chuck Hagel has slandered both Israel and the U.S., raised an important procedural concern. He pointed out that Hagel has submitted to the Committee only four of his speeches from the past five years. This, despite the fact that Hagel's financial records show that he was paid for 12 speeches in the last year alone.
Obviously, the Senate needs to review the full Hagelian body of work before passing judgment on his fitness for Secretary of Defense, particularly given the former Senator's propensity for packing controversial and offensive comments into a very few sentences. Unless there is a good reason why the text of Hegal's other speeches cannot be provided, Republicans should block the confirmation process until Hagel is more forthcoming.
Even more problematic is Hagel's failure, according to Cruz, to respond to a request for a list of the private entities that have paid paid him during the past five years, including foreign organizations and sources. Given Hagel's pro-Arab/Iranian, anti-Israeli views, it's not a surprise that Hagel has been linked with various outfits that are working to bring about a major shift in U.S. Middle Eastern policy. To cite just one example, according to this open letter:
Hagel is a paid member of Deutsche Bank's Americas Advisory Board, which is under U.S. investigation for violating sanctions by siphoning billions of dollars through its U.S. branches to Iran, Sudan, and other sanctioned nations. Perhaps this explains why Hagel, who sat on the Senate Banking Committee, was only one of two senators who in 2008 voted against sanctioning nations that do certain business with Iran.
Hagel can accept money from anyone he wants, as long as he doesn't violate the law. But the Senate is entitled to know which organizations, especially foreign ones, have been paying him.
Again, Republicans should not allow this nomination to proceed until Hagel provides the requested information. And the Committee's hearing should be held open to permit additional questioning when/if he provides it.
ACRU Defends Marriage in Combined Supreme Court Case
Lower Court Rulings Striking Down California's Prop 8 and the Federal Defense of Marriage Act Rest on Faulty Logic, Brief Says
WASHINGTON, DC (Jan. 30, 2013) Lower courts have misapplied the central finding in a previous case in their rulings against a federal law and a California constitutional amendment that define marriage as the union of one man and one woman, a brief filed on Tuesday by the American Civil Rights Union argues.
Noting that the earlier opinions rely heavily on the 2003 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down state anti-sodomy laws, the ACRU brief, written by General Counsel Peter Ferrara, gives three reasons why that case does not apply to either the California Prop 8 case or the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
Former Mayor Blackwell: Four Year Fight for Second Amendment
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published on January 29, 2013 on Breitbart.com.
President Barack Obama met with big-city police chiefs today calling for gun control. In response, former Cincinnati Mayor Ken Blackwell explained to Breitbart News why violating the Second Amendment doesn't make anyone safer, and how Second Amendment supporters can protect their rights against the White House's onslaught.
Blackwell served as mayor of the Queen City, then later served under conservative icon Jack Kemp as an Undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and then U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Beyond that, he's married to Rosa Blackwell, who worked in public education for three decades, as a teacher, principal, and finally Superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools.

"Currently, the BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation," said a press release on Monday issued by Scouts spokesman Deron Smith. "This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation, but that the chartered organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with their organization's mission, principles or religious beliefs. BSA members and parents would be able to choose a local unit which best meets the needs of their families."

Let's look at experts. Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was a mathematician and scientist. Newton has to be the greatest and most influential scientist who has ever lived. He laid the foundation for classical mechanics, and his genius transformed our understanding of science, particularly in the areas of physics, mathematics and astronomy. What's not widely known is that Newton spent most of his waking hours on alchemy; his experiments included trying to turn lead into gold. Though he wrote volumes on alchemy, after his death Britain's Royal Society deemed that they were "not fit to be printed."

Government does not even have the power to take guns away from criminals. It can only take guns away from the victims of criminals. This is not a matter of opinion. It is an unchallengeable fact.
Addictive drugs are illegal. But they are everywhere in America. Even in rural America, and the Bible Belt. We even find them in prisons. And the greatest gun crime has been in the cities with the strictest gun control laws.

ROBERT KNIGHT - Lying is no big deal. It's just something that we Americans have to live with. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said as much in Wednesday's congressional hearing on the Sept. 11 Benghazi killings. Pressed by Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson about the administration's two weeks' worth of lies about the attack that cost the lives of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya, Mrs. Clinton complained, "With all due respect, the fact is, we had four dead Americans... The Abortionist Saints of Sundance By L. Brent Bozell III Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival featured a documentary celebrating four "amazing" abortionists who evacuate wombs in the third trimester of pregnancy. The message was clear: pro-lifers are dangerous. The critics in attendance loved it.
America's Role in a Darkening Age By Patrick J. Buchanan Twenty years after the fall of communism, the wheel has turned again - toward darkness. No longer do we hear chatter about "The End of History" and triumph of democratic capitalism, of America imposing her "global hegemony" or leading mankind into "a second American century." In an essay, "The Return of Toxic Nationalism," Robert Kaplan, a geopolitical analyst for Stratfor, writes that Western elites are even yet failing to see the larger, darker picture of our evolving world.
Ladies Against Senator Sleaze-Bob By Michelle Malkin What? You haven't heard about Sen. Bob Menendez's war on women from the left-wing War on Women brigade? Nary a progressive peep? Well, knock me over with a Code Pink feather boa. Not sure how the story could have slipped their news-savvy feminist minds.
Hagel Testimony: Fail By Rich Galen I hope President Obama withdraws the Hagel nomination for Secretary of Defense. If yesterday was any test, he is simply not up to the job.
To shame the nonbelievers, the White House released a photo of President Obama shooting a gun - with a warning that "the photograph may not be manipulated in any way."
The People's Cube collective responded to the challenge accordingly.
This is, perhaps, the best and largest collection of Obama bitterly clinging to his gun and clay pigeons...
With over 8 million people mysteriously disappearing from the US workforce during President Barack Obama's first term, experts are working on a number of theories to explain this riddle, the most commonly mentioned reason being alien abductions occurring throughout the US on an extraordinarily massive scale.
According to a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the number of people disappearing from the US workforce rose from 80.5 million when the president took office in 2009 to the current 89 million, while unemployment has remained steady near 8-9%. In other words, 8.5 million people have simply vanished in a way that can't be explained by the usual retirement or disability trends.
"Since we can't blame it on the economy, the only conceivable explanation is that someone is taking people out of the labor market by force," said Malcolm Lenivie...
Even though the rate ticked up, 157,000 jobs were added. BUT 169,000 people gave up looking for work and left the job force. In the president's first term the total number of people who left the workforce is 8.5 million. But, fortunately for Obama, those people are not counted in the unemployment figure...if they were the unemployment rate would be 14.4%. STORY
Senator Ted Cruz thumps Chuck Hagel
Chuck Hagel had a rough time during his confirmation hearing to be the next Secretary of Defense. Leading the charge yesterday was Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruz chipped away at Hagel and his flawed vision of the world, in which America is the "biggest bully" on the planet. Glenn interviewed Senator Cruz on radio today.

Another bad progressive idea: Women in combat
Last night on TheBlaze TV, Glenn conducted a riveting conversation on the latest progressive idea - lifting the ban on women in combat. On the outside this seems like a feel-good story, but like any leftist idea, it's riddled with problems. Check out the conversation HERE.
Armed guard stops middle school shooter, media silent
Glenn recounted a recent story from his own life where guns were banned from a local event he attended. There was a large "no guns" sign, making the site more of a target than a safe zone, in Glenn's opinion. Are schools and other events safer with these signs or with armed citizens and guards? Just ask the students of an Atlanta middle school who are now safe because of an armed, off-duty resource officer who disarmed a shooter on their campus yesterday. MORE
