Muslim Brotherhood group to 'connect all U.S. schools.' Partners with State, Education departments on international initiative
Posted on January 24, 2013
JERUSALEM - A Muslim Brotherhood-linked organization has partnered with the U.S. Department of Education and the State Department to facilitate an online program aiming to connect all U.S. schools with classrooms abroad by 2016.
Vartan Gregorian, a board member of the organization in question, the Qatar Foundation International, was appointed in 2009 to President Obama's White House Fellowships Commission.
WND previously exposed how Gregorian served as a point man in granting $49.2 million in start up capital to an education-reform project founded by Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers and chaired by Obama.
Documentation shows Gregorian was central in Ayers' recruitment of Obama to serve as the first chairman of the project, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge - a job in which Obama worked closely on a regular basis with Ayers.
Obama also later touted his job at the project as qualifying him to run for public office, as WND previously reported.
Connecting schools to fulfil Obama pledge to Arab world
The Qatar Foundation International, or QFI, in 2011 partnered with the Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to facilitate matchmaking between classrooms in the U.S. and international schools through something called the "Connect All Schools" project.
QFI, funded by the Qatari government, explains on its website the online initiative was founded in response to Obama's call to "create a new online network, so a young person in Kansas can communicate instantly with a young person in Cairo," during his June 2009 speech to the Arab world from Cairo, Egypt.
QFI relates how more than 100 U.S. schools and organizations have already connected on the interactive website, www.connectallschools.org.
The stated goal of the online intiative is to "connect every school in the US with the world by 2016."
This is not the QFI's first foray into the U.S. education system.
Now that he has secured his second term, President Barack Obama has already secretly pledged to the Palestinians he will press Israel into a new round of so-called land-for-peace negotiations, a top Palestinian Authority negotiator told KleinOnline.
The negotiator said top members of the Obama administration told the Palestinians the U.S. president will renew talks aimed at creating a Palestinian state in the so-called 1967 borders - meaning in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and, notably, eastern Jerusalem.

Sunstein: Obama Wants 'Second Bill of Rights'
Mere hours after Breitbart News published an excerpt from an interview with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) in which he speculated that President Barack Obama would "prefer a different kind of constitution," one with a Bill of Rights based on the South African model, former Obama administration regulatory czar Cass Sunstein published an op-ed making a similar argument: that the president wants a "second Bill of Rights" alongside the existing one.
Sunstein located the source of Obama's inspiration in Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 1944 State of the Union address, rather than the South African constitution--though the American academics whose writings inspired South Africa's ambitious Bill of Rights could well have taken Roosevelt's proposals as their foundation.
Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights--not a list of constitutional amendments, but policy goals--was as follows:
13 States, and Counting, with Bills to Nullify Federal Gun "Laws

Pennsylvania
HB357 - yes, 357 - is ready to roll. Support it.
The bill includes felony charges against anyone - including federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders.
Passage would prohibit the federal government from regulating "a personal firearm, a firearm accessory or ammunition that is owned or manufactured commercially or privately in this state and that remains exclusively within the borders of this state." Felony charges for federal agents who violate the state law.

Taxpayers stand to lose $27B in bailout, watchdog says
Published January 30, 2013 | Associated Press
WASHINGTON - A government watchdog says U.S. taxpayers stand to lose $27 billion from the 2008 financial bailout, up from an estimate of $22 billion made in the fall.
A report issued Wednesday by the special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program says the estimate is higher because of increased losses for the Treasury Department on sales of shares in bailed-out companies.
Ally Financial, the former financial arm for General Motors, still owes $14.6 billion of the $17.2 billion in aid it received. The report says taxpayers can expect to lose $5.5 billion on that investment because of the company's losses on risky mortgages issued ahead of the financial crisis.

February 15 - March 27, 2013 - Debt Ceiling: Sometime in this date range we are expected to reach the debt ceiling (Technically we have already hit the debt ceiling, but this is the date range when we will reach a point where the Treasury can no longer implement "extraordinary measures" to meet our spending obligations.
February 28, 2013 - Sequestration: The "fiscal cliff" bill created a new manufactured crisis that will happen sometime at the end of February. This is when the sequestration can was kicked down the road.

April 15, 2013 - Budget Resolution: This is the date by law in which both Houses should have a budget resolution passed. We are already hearing that the President is late in submitting his budget, the House is reporting that they will not meet their deadline for a budget, and the Senate... well they haven't passed a budget in over 1,350 days.

The major political battles of 2013 are about to commence.
Last year, the Association successfully lobbied against the phony "school choice" bill, SB 1, and supported HB 1330--the budget neutral expansion of the EITC scholarship fund . A version of HB 1330 was attached to another bill, approved by the Assembly, and signed into law by Governor Tom Corbett.
In addition, very early on, the Association backed the PA Voter ID bill--which also passed the Assembly and was signed into law.
Finally, the Association successfully lobbied the respective Governors of NJ and PA, Chris Christie and Tom Corbett, against establishing state health insurance exchanges--a fundamental requirement of ObamaCare.
This year, the Association will focus its limited funding, energy, and resources on a handful state and federal issues.
In this letter, we will emphasize important state battles shaping up in Harrisburg, Trenton, and Dover.
Harrisburg
Pennsylvania Right to Work is topic #1 as State Rep. Darryl Metcalfe and other legislators announce the reintroduction of aRight to Work bill during today's 11 AM Harrisburg Presser (details below).
Next on the agenda is State Rep. Matt Baker's Opt Out of ObamaCare legislation. This bill cleared the House Health Committee last session--only to whither on the vine. We must pass the bill in this session and persuade Gov. Corbett to sign it into law.
Also, we have been working behind the scenes with State Reps. Stephen Barrar and Darryl Metcalfe to enact legislation allowing any registered Pennsylvania voter to poll watch at any precinct within the boundaries of the Commonwealth.
Trenton
In New Jersey, we will press Governor Christie to veto proposed bills seeking to increase the minimum wage and restrict 2nd Amendment Rights.
Dover
In Delaware, we will join efforts to stop the numerous gun control bills that have been introduced in the state legislature.
In the coming days, there will be plenty of opportunities for us to demonstrate our commitment to conservative values.
From tomorrow's Right to Work press conference to Dom Giordano's Salute Our Troops (Presidents Day, February 18), there are two terrific events being hosted by four great organizations.
1. Right to Keep & Bear Arms--A Peaceful Demonstration
When: Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, 10 AM
Where: State Capitol, 125 West State Street, Trenton, NJ
Sponsored by the New Jersey Second Amendment Society
2. 2nd Annual Salute Our Troops! Live Broadcast and Luncheon
When: Presidents Day, Monday, February 18, 2013, 11 AM
Where: Crowne Plaza Valley Forge, 260 Mall Blvd, King of Prussia, PA
Before signing-off, I would like to acknowledge one of the saddest anniversary dates in our nation's history.
Forty years ago today, Roe v. Wade became the law of land--overturning some form of legal protection for unborn children in every state in the union.
Since that tragic day, it is estimated that well over 50 million lives have been ended through the controversial practice of abortion.
Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, as a conservative, you must
recognize the disastrous legal consequences of the US Supreme Court's decision which made a mockery of states rights.
We can all agree that the Warren Court's decision demonstrated a virulent contempt for the US Constitution and its 10th Amendment.
We can also agree that taxpayer funded abortion is a grave moral affront to those among us who believe that the sanctity of innocent human life is paramount.

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.
"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."
Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:
Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.
Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.
"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."
Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting RepMetcalfe.com.

On Monday, President Barack Obama nominated former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel to be his next Secretary of Defense in succession to Leon Panetta. Chuck Hagel's record is one of being a frightening and dangerous apologist for terrorist groups like Hamas and Hizballah, as well as for the Iranian terrorist regime, while being arguably one of the most vicious and hostile critics of Israel. The ZOA believes that appointing Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary would also serve to confirm the fears that many have that President Obama is no friend of Israel and is not serious about stopping Iran's nuclear program.
ACTION:
Please call your U.S. Senators to urge President Obama not to nominate Chuck Hagel and to vote against his appointment if Hagel's name goes forward for Secretary of Defense. You can reach all U.S. Senators through the Capitol Hill switchboard: 202-224-3121.

Call Sen. Menendez 202-224-4744
Delaware:

Call Sen. Coons 202-224-5042
BACKGROUND:
In 2009, Hagel signed a letter urging President Obama to begin direct negotiations with Hamas, a U.S. designated terrorist group committed in its Charter to the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews, a position President Obama has not taken up.
In a 2006 interview with former Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller, Hagel said that "the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people" on Capitol Hill ('Hagel named to intelligence board,' Jewish Telegraphic Agency, October 29, 2009).
In July 2006, at the outbreak of the Lebanon war, Hagel argued against giving Israel the time to break Hizballah, urging instead an immediate ceasefire ('Key Republican breaks with Bush on Mideast,' CNN.com, July 31, 2006).
December 2005: Hagel was one of only 27 senators who refused to sign a letter to President Bush urging him to pressure the Palestinian Authority (PA) to ban terrorist groups from participating in Palestinian legislative elections.
June 2004, Hagel refused to sign a letter urging President Bush to highlight Iran's nuclear program at the G-8 summit and was one of only two senators in to vote against renewal of the Libya-Iran sanctions act.
November 2001: Hagel was one of only 11 senators who refused to sign a letter urging President Bush not to meet with the late Yasser Arafat until his forces ended the violence against Israel.
In July 2001, Hagel was one of only two senators to vote against extending the original Iranian sanctions bill.
October 2000: Hagel was one of only four senators who refused to sign a Senate letter in support of Israel.

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.
This is a major push forward for APC in the battle to stop Agenda 21, and I need you to look it over and sign your approval to it.
Let me explain this vital project.
Across the nation, individuals and local activists have been working to stop the ravages of Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development. And we have won some astounding victories.
We've made Agenda 21 a major issue.
But we are vastly outgunned by the Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are pushing this agenda from the UN all the way to your city council.
They are flooding state capitals with lobbyists, money, and a flood of issue documents. They are rich, powerful and well organized.
We aren't. We are a rag tag band of dedicated activists with passion for the cause of freedom and little else.
That has got to change.
Our activists need the tools necessary to win.
That's just what my "Stop Agenda 21" project is designed to provide.

He was a 2011 Robert Novak Fellow at the Phillips Foundation, a 2010 Publius Fellow at the Claremont Institute, and is author of the recent book Sex and God at Yale: Porn, Political Correctness, and a Good Education Gone Bad.
The following is adapted from a speech delivered at Hillsdale College on September 20, 2012.
In 1951, William F. Buckley, Jr., a graduate of Yale the year before, published his first book, God & Man at Yale. In the preface, he described two ideas that he had brought with him to Yale and that governed his view of the world:
"I had always been taught, and experience had fortified the teachings, that an active faith in God and a rigid adherence to Christian principles are the most powerful influences toward the good life. I also believed, with only a scanty knowledge of economics, that free enterprise and limited government had served this country well and would probably continue to do so in the future."
The body of the book provided evidence that the academic agenda at Yale was openly antagonistic to those two ideas-that Buckley had encountered a teaching and a culture that were hostile to religious faith and that promoted collectivism over free market individualism. Rather than functioning as an open forum for ideas, his book argued, Yale was waging open war upon the faith and principles of its alumni and parents.
There are now more than 2 dozen bills introduced in states around the country that would nullify federal gun laws/regulations, NDAA indefinite detention, Obamacare and more. Below are some of the highlights of the past week. Track the status of all nullification bills at http://tracking.tenthamendmentcenter.com
"The Franklin County Board of Commissioners declares that all federal acts, laws, orders, rules, regulations - past, present or future - regarding firearms are hereby declared to be invalid in this county, shall not be recognized by this county, are specifically rejected by this county, and shall be considered null and void and of no effect in this county."
Stopping indefinite detention in WY comes up for an important committee hearing
"The Constitution of the United States has the Bill of Rights for a reason," said Representative Kroeker, "I take an oath to support, obey, and defend the Constitution and I take that seriously. When the federal government passes legislation that violates the constitution, it is our duty as a state to make sure we protect the rights of our citizens."
They ban the creation of state exchanges by a vote of 73-40
State Senator Bryant said he is not overly concerned about the prospect of a legal challenge if the proposed "South Carolina Freedom of Health Care Protection Act" is enacted by the General Assembly.
"A majority of our state does not want the federal government to tell them that they have to buy health insurance," Bryant said.
Next week, the Boy Scouts of America will decide on whether it will keep a long standing policy of not allowing homosexuals to serve as volunteer leaders, or to change that policy and allow open homosexuals to participate in the scouting program. See our story at OneNewsNow.
If the BSA departs from its policies on allowing homosexual scoutmasters and boys in the program, it will destroy the legitimacy and the security of this iconic institution.
While news articles conclude the latter as a forgone conclusion, the final decision has not been made.
Even if you've already taken action...

I was not going to say anything, but rather just fade away. I suppose though with rumors and reports I should say something.
My voicemail and inbox are, as I type, filling up. I have turned my phone off as the only way to get it to stop ringing.
Yes, I can confirm I am leaving CNN. It was a very, very difficult decision. I appreciate their willingness to keep me on, but my wife and I decided it was time to move on.
When I told my 7 year old I had decided to leave, she laid on the sofa for an hour crying that she'd never see Anderson Cooper again. She's never actually met Anderson Cooper. But I have and I'll miss him and his team and I'll miss Wolf and his team, and all the other terrific people I've worked with these last three years. I deeply regret never working up the courage to pull on Wolf's beard
For three years I have been a conservative political contributor at the network I grew up watching from Dubai and then home in Louisiana. I grew up wanting to be a Bernard Shaw or a Robert Novak and wound up working for CNN.
For all those liberals who lost money thinking Keith Olbermann would outlast me at Current TV, well, sorry.
Me at CNN was not an easy fit. The first month was tumultuous with several tumultuous times throughout. I liked to think of myself as job security for the public relations department. About the only thing the far right and far left could agree on was that I did not belong at CNN.
For three years I have received unmitigated hate and loathing from the left and, ironically, from a lot of folks on the right. Frankly, I'd like to thank some significant people responsible for my time at CNN, but (1) they know who they are and (2) it'd just generate hate mail for them so I better not.
For some reason saying something negative about the GOP was fine here at RedState, but saying the same damn thing on CNN brought in a flurry of emails from conservatives accusing me of selling out. Funny how that works.
You'd be surprised how long it has taken to say this. I've let multiple friends vet the various drafts of posts I've written on this and they all wind up arguing with each other over the details. Is it amnesty or isn't it? Should we give a path to citizenship or not? We are getting in the weeds when the basics will do.
I think this plan is warmed over McCain-Kennedy and will do nothing to solve the problem. I say this as someone to the left of much of the readership here at RedState and the conservative base.
The GOP was smart to put Marco Rubio as the face of the plan because many of us like him personally, support him still, and consequently don't want to seem critical.
3.Colorado Energy Office Can't Account for $252 Million In Last Six Years
A 2012 performance review of the The Colorado Energy Office (CEO) revealed several disturbing findings by the State Auditor last month, which included a non-existent accounting system for CEO's 34 programs, a runaway budget, and staff who had no knowledge of program goals or standards. The forty-eight page report was was dated December 18, 2012 and included background information on the CEO, key facts and findings, the State Auditor concerns, and recommendations for the CEO moving forward.
The CEO was established via executive order in 1977 as the Office of Energy Conservation. Last year, House Bill 12-1315 changed CEO's overall mission from promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency to promoting all sources of energy development and earmarked state funding for CEO through Fiscal Year 2017. The CEO now administers various federal and state energy programs, advises stakeholders on energy-related policy and legislation, and promotes energy market development. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Standing With Israel & Against Chuck Hagel
The Senate Armed Services Committee will hold a hearing this Thursday to consider Barack Obama's ill-conceived and dangerous nomination of former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense.
Last night I was honored to attend a great gathering of pro-Israel Christians in Washington, D.C. With just a week's notice, Christians United for Israel Action Fund brought 500 people from 46 states to our nation's capital to stand for a strong national defense and a solid U.S./Israeli alliance, and against the nomination of Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Pastor John Hagee delivered passionate speeches outlining why Hagel would be a disaster for our national security and for the balance of power in the Middle East. I reminded the audience about Hagel's incredibly bad voting record, but also pointed out his repeated use of rhetoric most often associated with anti-Semites.
Today, the members of Christians United for Israel Action Fund, fired up from our time together last night, visited over 65 Senate offices, making the case against Hagel in person on Capitol Hill. I accompanied Pastor Hagee to a meeting with Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), an outstanding conservative champion and the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
As Iran continues its reckless pursuit of nuclear weapons and its meddling in the Middle East, the nomination of Chuck Hagel sends the worst possible signal of weakness and ambivalence to our enemies as well as our allies.
In fact, I fear that Hagel's nomination will embolden our enemies and invite acts of aggression and terrorism. Add to this Obama's recent arms transfer of F-16s and M1 tanks to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood-controlled government and you have a prescription for disaster.
Here We Go Again
Yesterday a gang of eight senators -- four Democrats and four Republicans -- announced plans to try yet again to push comprehensive immigration reform through the Senate. The plan is based largely on a 2007 bill that failed after a bi-partisan filibuster.
We don't know much at this point. All the senators offered yesterday was a brief outline of principles. The details will follow later. But as the saying goes, "The devil is in the details."
We do know that this plan includes a "pathway to citizenship" for illegal immigrants in the country. However, the senators claim they are making border security a priority because illegal immigrants would not be allowed to apply for citizenship until the borders are secured and verifiable systems are in place to make sure that foreign visitors are not overstaying their visas. The plan would also require the use of an employer verification system.
Critics are blasting the plan because it essentially grants illegal immigrants an immediate "probationary legal status," allowing them to stay and work in the country as long as they can pass a background check. This is a quasi-amnesty that effectively codifies the controversial executive orders halting deportations that Barack Obama issued last summer.
Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has been involved in this effort. He called into Rush Limbaugh's show today to stress that he would not back any final bill that did not include strict border security triggers.
Meanwhile, President Obama is unveiling his plans for immigration reform at a rally in Las Vegas today. According to various reports, the president's proposal would have a faster pathway to citizenship because it would not include border security mandates. No surprise there.
Obama's plan is also expected to pander to the homosexual rights crowd by granting green cards to the foreign same-sex spouses of U.S. citizens regardless of the marriage laws of their states. Leave it to Obama to make gay marriage a priority in immigration reform!
Boy Scouts Lose Merit Badge For Courage
After years of harassment, lawsuits, boycotts and the loss of corporate sponsorships, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) confirmed yesterday that it is considering a new policy that would open the door to allowing open homosexuals to serve as scout masters.
Last summer, a special committee reaffirmed the current ban on homosexual scout masters as "absolutely the best policy." But the sudden decision to revisit the policy is reportedly being driven by two corporate CEOs on the BSA's board -- Randall Stephenson of AT&T and James Turley of Ernst & Young.
Rather than reversing the policy completely, the Boy Scouts of America appears poised to adopt a "no-policy policy," essentially leaving the decision on scout masters to locally chartered units. Below is an excerpt of a statement from the BSA:
"Currently, the BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation. This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation, and the chartered organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with each organization's mission, principles, or religious beliefs. ...
"The Boy Scouts would not, under any circumstances, dictate a position to units, members, or parents. Under this proposed policy, the BSA would not require any chartered organization to act in ways inconsistent with that organization's mission, principles, or religious beliefs."
In other words, churches that sponsor Boy Scout units would not be forced to accept homosexual counselors.
The left has created a juggernaut using every cultural institution -- the media, schools, corporations, government -- to attack the family and turn common sense on its head. What was once considered deviant is now seen as normal. And what was once regarded as healthy and virtuous is condemned as bigotry. Groups like the Boy Scouts come under constant pressure and are threatened with funding cutoffs. Most eventually cave in.

Once again, Kroft enters the annals of journalist shilling for the Left. Remember, he is the same "journalist" who sat on Obama's own admission that he, Obama, did not call Benghazi a terrorist attack in the Rose Garden on September 12 until two days before the election.
If one listens to the mainstream media, some of their Obama-friendly operatives are openly declaring that the only way Mr. Obama can "cement his legacy" is if he succeeds in his goal of destroying the GOP.

When professional writers get together what they talk about are not the great ideas that some of their readers imagine, but mostly the mundane business of their work; the good and bad reviews, the writers, agents and editors they hate and those they like, and the relationships in their incestuous industry.
Joseph Anton, Salman Rushdie's memoir of his years in hiding, is such a collection of industry talk, full of the good and bad reviews he received, the famous people he attended parties with and his opinion of every writer, lover and editor he came in contact with. There are plenty of meditations on his years in hiding and his relationship with his service branch protectors, but Rushdie is a creature of the publishing industry and the literary circles that made him famous and kept him influential, and the book is more about that world than it is about the reasons he went into hiding and stayed in hiding.
All biography is at its heart fiction and Joseph Anton is a triumphant work of fiction as its author labors to make Rushdie's numerous marriages and infidelities seem like the natural outcome of a stressful situation and the neurosis of his many wives. Any writer who crosses Rushdie or whom he crosses receives that same treatment. How much of it is true, is impossible to know.
Joseph Anton is Rushdie's way of settling scores, some probably justified, some probably not, with countless reviewers, writers, politicians and wives. Throughout it all he manages to maintain the persona of an affable man wronged by unfair attacks and allegations, though toward the end when discussing his breakup with Padma Lakshmi, he begins ranting incoherently about Scrooge McDuck.
What Joseph Anton isn't about, is Islamism or even freedom of expression. Rushdie does his best to make his ability to write and live freely as the acid test of freedom of expression, and he has a case considering that silencing him was the first major move to enforce Islamic law in the West. But it's less a case of a courageous reformer speaking out, than a mildly famous left-wing writer discovering that circumstances had placed him on the firing line.
Obama DHS To Buy 7,000 "Assault Weapons" "Personal Defense Weapons"
OH the blatant hypocrisy of the politicians and those in government in Washington. When they want you to be afraid of civilians with semi-automatic rifles they refer to them as "assault weapons," but when they want to purchase similar weapons for their people, they refer to them as "personal defense weapons." This is documented in the latest request for a General Service Administration (GSA) request for proposal (RFP) by the Department of Homeland Security on the Federal Business Opportunities website.
If you will notice, DHS is also soliciting for "commercial items" that use "5.56x45mm NATO ammunition." Again, the hypocrisy is astounding. Aren't we being told by people like Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) that these are "military style weapons," not "commercial items"? Isn't she the one proclaiming that these don't need to be on our streets, but in the theater of war? Yet, it appears those in government want to take a "Do as I say, not as I do" approach to telling us what we can and cannot have when it pertains to the Second Amendment. They want them on the streets, in the airports, at the bus stop and on trains, as long as it's in the hands of their hirelings.
President Obama recently nominated John Brennan for the office of Director of the CIA but is he the right man for the job? One might worry that "no" is the answer to that as we've since found out that in the 1980s Brennan thought Americans could have "too much freedom" and suggested that the press should be censored. He also felt the citizenry's rights should not be considered sacrosanct.
So, a man that thinks freedom should be restricted because there's too much of it has just been named to America's premiere secret policing agency, one that is supposed to interact with the rest of the world? How can anyone think this is a good idea?
Last week, news broke that Brennan's 1980 graduate thesis at the University of Texas contained the premise that there is "too much freedom possible" in the United States and elsewhere and government should be used to restrict things he deems unacceptable, such as freedom of the press.
Brennan's thesis, titled "Human Rights: A Case Study of Egypt," was written to satisfy his Master of Arts degree in government with a focus on Middle Eastern studies.
In the thesis Brennan posited that rights are not inalienable and could be restricted by government whenever government deems it necessary.
Brennan was at least cognizant enough of his radical premise to note in his recommendation for tyranny that his ideas "can provide a convenient excuse for any authoritarian leader in any country of the world."
This is the authoritarian-loving man that Obama wants to give the powers of the CIA?
It should be noted that this man was not an impressionable kid when he wrote this. He was 25-years-old, long past the formative stages!
We might recall John Brennan from 2009 (courtesy of David Limbaugh):
Obama also intends to appoint John Brennan as his new CIA director. Brennan told us in 2009 that Obama doesn't describe our fight against jihadis as a "war on terrorism." He said that we need not only to defeat al-Qaida and its allies but to address ignorance, poverty and repression and that we should reach out to "moderate" elements of the Hezbollah terror group. He calls Jerusalem "Al-Quds," its Arabic name.
Senator John Kerry (D-MA) is likely to be confirmed today as the next Secretary of State after sailing through a Senate hearing last week. What does this mean for America and its foreign policy?
As Heritage's Helle Dale wrote after last week's hearing:
The bad news for the United States is that Kerry is President Obama's ideological twin and can be expected to enthusiastically embrace the Obama doctrine and continue the Administration's pursuit of arms control, international treaties, and climate-change agreements. This is a classic liberal agenda, which will only lead to a further erosion of American global leadership.
Though Kerry talked tough on Iran, The Wall Street Journaldescribed Kerry's stance as a "vision to wind down America's military operations in the Islamic world and to pursue a foreign policy more driven by aid, economics and environmental issues."
Kerry, a former presidential candidate who served in Vietnam and then protested the war, has chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee-the committee where his confirmation hearings take place-since 2009. He has been a Senator since 1985. Some of his key positions:
He has stated that when the U.S. undertakes military action, it must first pass a "global test."
He has been a cheerleader for various international treaties, such as the Law of the Sea Treaty and the Arms Trade Treaty, that infringe on U.S. sovereignty.
He is one of the greatest supporters of President Obama's "reset" policy with Russia.
He has supported the idea of "fruitful talks between the U.S. and North Korea."
His Senate colleagues have failed to press Kerry on any meaningful issues, which is unsurprising but still a negative for the country and U.S. allies.
The Secretary of State's priorities should be defending American sovereignty, promoting economic freedom, and restoring American leadership in the world. Kerry's track record and his fidelity to Obama's worldview give us little hope for those priorities.
Guide to the Hearings:
Heritage experts have put out a guide to the confirmation hearings for Kerry, former Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) for Secretary of Defense, and White House chief counterterrorism advisor John Brennan for director of the CIA. See their analysis of major issues facing each nominee in these categories:
Nobody could have seriously expected President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to be pushed to explain their record of foreign policy failures in their joint interview on "60 Minutes" last night. With presidential sycophant Steve Kroft asking the questions there was little probing other than about their personal interrelations and the obligatory question about 2016 (which reminded us that the only real loser in the interview was Vice President Joe Biden who, despite being the adult in the White House when it comes to getting things passed through Congress, was sent the clear message that he is still an also-ran as far as the president is concerned). But there was one real nugget of information about the future of American foreign policy that the president let slip, and it actually deserves more attention than the titillating details about the Obama-Clinton alliance.
The real headline out of the interview ought to center on the following remark by the president in response to a rather soft question about his "lead from behind" strategy in the Middle East:
President Obama: Well, Muammar Qaddafi probably does not agree with that assessment, or at least if he was around, he wouldn't agree with that assessment. Obviously, you know, we helped to put together and lay the groundwork for liberating Libya. You know, when it comes to Egypt, I think, had it not been for the leadership we showed, you might have seen a different outcome there.
Let me get this straight. President Obama is not merely bragging about a conflict in Libya that led to chaos not only in that country that produced the murders of four Americans including our ambassador. He is also saying that he thinks he positively impacted the outcome of the power struggle in Egypt over the last two years and actually thinks his "leadership" helped create a situation about which we are happy. So what he's telling us is that he's not merely pleased with what he did or didn't do, but that he thinks the current situation in Cairo in which the most populous Arab country is now run by a Muslim Brotherhood government led by a raving anti-Semite is a good thing about which he can brag on national TV.
Unfortunately the race to out-amnesty one another just got a new contender as President Obama announced his support for an even more wide-reaching amnesty.
WHAT IS ANNOUNCED IN VEGAS SHOULD STAY IN VEGAS
It appears President Obama is ready to play Amnesty Roulette and he's betting on a bigger amnesty than the Gang of Eight's. President Obama, in front of a supportive audience in Las Vegas that cheered wildly throughout his speech, just announced his vision of Amnesty 2.0.
Please click on the following link to call President Obama and tell him to stop gambling with our immigration laws. Due to the late nature of the President's speech, some of you may not see this alert until the White House comment line has closed. If so, please call tomorrow.
I know some of you may feel that it's not even worth your time to phone the White House on this issue, but every voice of opposition to the amnesty puts one small stumbling block in its way. While we may never change the minds of some elected officials, you have proven in the past that you can build a wall of opposition they aren't willing to risk climbing over.
As all-encompassing as the Gang of Eight amnesty proposal is, President Obama's proposal goes even further. Most noticeably different than the Gang of Eight's proposal is that President Obama's propo sal includes virtually no enforcement measures. There was no mention of mandating E-verify or any other employment verification system, no mention of border security, and no mention of completing an entry/exit program.
He did, however, say that there had to be a clearly defined "path to citizenship" for the nation's 11 million illegal aliens, and he called for massive increases in legal immigration numbers.
THANK YOU
Thank you! Because thousands of you answered our call (for calls!) yesterday, our Capitol Hill team heard from many Congressional offices that the phones were ringing off the hook in opposition to Amnesty 2.0. Your voice was so important in countering the ebullient media's anointment of the Gang of Eight amnesty plan because it provided Members of Congress with the initial feedback they needed to hear that their constituents oppose amnesty. Already your calls are encouraging some Members to distance themselves from any amnesty proposal.
If you didn't have a chance to call, it is not too late. Our focus this week is to have the phones ringing off the hook in opposition to amnesty.
SIGNS OF HOPE EMERGE CONGRESSIONAL VOICES AGAINST AMNESTY
Thanks in good measure to your hard work, it didn't take long yesterday for voices of reason on Amnesty 2.0 to begin to emerge from Capitol Hill.
As soon as we learn that a Member has spoken out against the amnesty, we are posting opportunities for constituents t o thank the Member. (Please let us know if you believe we have missed one).
Among yesterday's champions in standing against the amnesty were:
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senate Minority Leader
Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL)
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) -- see below
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX)
Senator David Vitter (R-LA)
Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX)
Rep. Steve King (R-IA)
Rep. Peter King (R-NY)
It is so important that these Members receive positive feedback when they speak (Tweet, write, etc) against amnesty because it provides them incredible support and, often encourages other Members to do the same. Be sure to check your Action Board for special messages you can send to your Member when if they come out against Amnesty 2.0.
One note of clarification about Senator Mike Lee of Utah. Although he was initially part of the Senate Gang of Eight, he refused to endorse their final amnesty plan yester day. He deserves special attention from our Utah activists as it was surely not easy to publicly oppose the proposal he had an opportunity to craft over the past several weeks.
2007 Amnesty Redux
As most of you heard yesterday, the Obama-Rubio immigration proposal is effectively an updated version of the 2007 defeated amnesty plan. Even Senator McCain stated this when endorsing the proposal. For a comparison of the 2013 amnesty with the 2007 amnesty, you might be interested in this chart that appeared in today's Washington Times.
In addition to staying on top of the situation on the Hill, Rosemary spent much of her day yesterday (and most of the day today) talking to various reporters and talk radio hosts about Amnesty 2.0. Slowly we are beginning to see the storyline change as other voices (including many from CIS and FAIR and others) are being included in coverage of the Amnesty to offer countering viewpoints.
Here is a synopsis of what Rosemary has been telling various media throughout the day yesterday and today:
In the race to out-amnesty Obama, the Gang of Eight today rehashed the failed amnesty plan from six years ago. If the Senate were serious about reforming our failed immigration system, the first step of their plan would be immediate, mandatory use of E-verify - the workplace enforcement measure that ensures jobs are only given to U.S. citizens and those WHO are here legally. Instead, the Senate gang's proposal is 'Amnesty 2.0' - meaningless enforcement measures, mass amnesty, and increased in legal immigration, with taxpayers left to foot the bill.
If you haven't made a donation lately -- and especially if you've never yet given -- please help support the cost of sending millions of faxes to Congress.
Stopping Amnesty will be expensive. But the cost of NOT stopping Amnesty will be astronomical!

HR 351, to repeal the rationing board in Obamacare
Art Kelly
By Art Kelly | 1/29/13
1. Congressman Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN) and 100 cosponsors have introduced HR 351, the Protecting Seniors' Access to Medicare Act, which would repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) in Obamacare.
A previous issue of this newsletter reported that former Congressman Dick Gephardt (MO), the House Democratic Leader before Nancy Pelosi, explained that:
IPAB will be an unelected and unaccountable group whose sole charge is to reduce Medicare spending based on an arbitrary target growth rate. It will propose cuts to Medicare that Congress can override only with supermajority votes, an unnecessarily high and unrealistic bar.
These cuts are likely to have devastating consequences for the seniors and disabled Americans who are Medicare's beneficiaries.
The damage from large and arbitrary cuts to Medicare payments will likely extend beyond Medicare itself...There is the very real risk that private sector insurance payments will follow Medicare payments' downward trend until the under-65 population also loses access to care.
In Liberal theology telling the truth is a sin; acknowledging that success comes from hard work and not "winning life's lottery" is a bigger sin. But being wealthy White and committing these sins makes them still bigger and clearly unforgivable.
When professional golfer Phil Mickelson complained about his taxes being too high he committed the Liberal sin of telling the truth. Their selectively applied "speaking truth to power" slogan aside, Liberals become furious at people who tell the emperor he is naked. When Mickelson said he was tired of paying an aggregate tax of 63% after all of the bites taken from his check, that was a sin, but it got worse: he added that since California's taxes are so high he was thinking about leaving "The Golden State."
President Barack Obama is set to reject the key compromise at the heart of a bipartisan deal on immigration reform announced by eight Senators yesterday. The president, who will deliver an address later today in Las Vegas, NV outlining his own immigration ideas, is reported to oppose linking a "path to citizenship" for illegal immigrants, a Democrat demand, to stronger law enforcement and better border security, a Republican demand.
The president will apparently argue that the administration has met reasonable goals on enforcing current immigration legislation, and that additional security will merely create new obstacles to legalizing the roughly 12 million illegal immigrants thought to be living in the United States. The federal government accelerated deportations in the first years of the Obama presidency, and sent new personnel to patrol the southwestern border.

"[T]he current and future role of the Bible in U.S. society is an often-debated topic. A new release from Barna Group shows how this debate plays out regionally and takes a look at how 96 of the largest cities in the nation view the Bible. ... Individuals who report reading the Bible in a typical week and who strongly assert the Bible is accurate in the principles it teaches are considered to be Bible-minded. ... Regionally, the South still qualifies as the most Bible-minded. ... This includes the media markets for Knoxville, TN (52% of the population are Bible-minded), Shreveport, LA (52%), Chattanooga, TN (52%), Birmingham, AL (50%), and Jackson, MS (50%). ... Easily the lowest Bible-minded scores came from Providence, RI (9%) and Albany, NY (10%). ... The New England area is home to most of the markets in the bottom 10 Bible-minded cities, including Burlington, VT (16%), Portland, ME (16%), Hartford, CT (16%), Boston, MA (16%), Buffalo, NY (18%) and New York, NY (18%). The remaining markets in the bottom 10 are primarily in the West and include San Francisco, CA (16%), Phoenix, AZ (17%), and Las Vegas, NV (18%). ... See all 96 cities here. ... Whether you live in a city ranked in the top half of Bible-minded cities or in the bottom half of Bible-minded cities, there are still tens of thousands of people to reach regarding both the message of the Scriptures and their importance. ... The key is to not merely 'preach to those insiders' but instead to equip and empower those who do believe with a strong and relevant message to take out into their communities, vocations and spheres of influence. They are the tipping point and can have great influence on the greater city." --The Barna Group
For the Record
"The Obama administration's announcement that it is going to put women in front-line ground combat positions is but the latest example of a deliberate and systematic wrecking operation it has conducted against the armed forces since 2009. ... Among the many, well-documented problems with assigning women to line infantry positions are three intractable ones: Most women lack the physical upper-body strength and stamina of most men. ... It is impossible as a practical matter to provide for separation of the sexes in frontline positions. That guarantees a loss of privacy and greatly increases the chances of pregnancies and harassment that: profoundly affects the personnel immediately involved; causes degrading of their units' warfighting capabilities; and traumatizes their families or, at a minimum, erodes the essential support for uniformed service that those loved ones provide. Men frequently will feel the need to protect women in dangerous situations, particularly if there is an emotional attachment between them. The effect in combat situations can be to complicate, if not to undermine entirely, the disciplined execution of orders that can prove to be the difference between victory and defeat. ... Unfortunately, thanks in part to the hollowing out of America's armed forces and other officially approved measures that are empowering and emboldening our enemies, the world is becoming a more dangerous place by the day. By replacing Ronald Reagan's historically validated philosophy of 'peace through American strength' with the unfounded hope for peace despite American weakness, President Obama is setting the stage for conflicts we will be unable to deter and, failing that, may be hard pressed to win." --Center for Security Policy President Frank J. Gaffney Jr.

A reader deep within the bowels of the Environmental Protection Administration - and nasty bowels they are too - says he is following the orders of outgoing EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson by forwarding this message from her to "all agency employees." We pass on this important message verbatim, minus only the EPA@Work banner displaying Jackson's smiling countenance:
Dear Colleagues:
I am proud to share with you an important effort our colleagues at EPA are supporting. It is called the It Gets Better Project.
Created in September 2010 by syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller, the campaign's mission is to show young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) people "the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach - if they can just get through their teen years." Video by video and story by story, the It Gets Better Project reminds LGBT teenagers who may be struggling that they are not alone - and that it will get better.
As President Obama said in his own It Gets Better video, "As a nation we're founded on the belief that all of us are equal and each of us deserves the freedom to pursue our own version of happiness; to make the most of our talents; to speak our minds; to not fit in; most of all, to be true to ourselves. That's the freedom that enriches all of us. "
I am honored to work alongside so many outstanding colleagues who have experienced tough challenges in their life due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, yet still have the courage to be open about who they are and the people they love. Many of them were able to keep focused on their life goals by telling themselves it will get better each day.
Some of these colleagues have offered to share their experiences of what it was like coming out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. Each story is different, but each story teaches us the profound difference that support and respect can make in a young person's life.
I invite you to take a moment to view EPA's It Gets Better video via the link below. I also invite you to share this link. Email it to your friends. Post it on Facebook. Tweet about it. This is a message we want to spread far and wide.
Special thanks to Ryan Robison, the multimedia team and the others who contributed to making this video. And thanks to all EPA employees for doing your part to ensure our agency is an open, welcoming and respectful place to work.
Sincerely,
Lisa P. Jackson
It Gets Better, Indeed. It's Getting Better All the Time.
The key component of the Gang of 8 Senate immigration proposal is the provision requiring that our borders be deemed "secure" before those who are in the country illegally now can begin the process towards U.S. citizenship. This provision purports to address the concern that providing a path to citizenship will encourage more illegal immigration.
Even in theory, providing a path to citizenship that's contingent on securing the border is bad policy. For one thing, those who violated our laws are still rewarded for their behavior, above and beyond the significant rewards they have already accrued. Moreover, a secure border at one moment in time - when so much is riding on a certification of security - hardly a guarantees a secure border in the future.
These concerns aside, the border certification process contemplated by the Gang of 8 appears to be phony. The Gang's proposal calls, inevitably, for a commission to opine on border security. Frank Sharry, a leading liberal advocate of immigration reform, has told Greg Sargent of the Washington Post that Democratic Senators assure him the commission won't be constructed in a way that will hold up the process for too long:
As Sharry put it, Democrats realize that they can't "allow the commission to have a real veto" over setting in motion the path to citizenship. He noted that Dems see the commission as "something that gives the Republicans a talking point" to claim they are prioritizing tough enforcement, giving themselves cover to back a process that "won't stop people from getting citizenship."
No surprise here. This legislation is all about the Democrats bringing in new voters who will assure them of a permanent leftist majority. Does anyone believe that Sens. Schumer, Durbin, etc. will place the success of this project in the hands of a truly impartial commission?
Evidence that the commission is, in Mark Krikorian's words, "a lie" comes from John McCain himself. As Ed Morrissey points out, McCain has said that the final decision will rest in the hands of the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, a political appointee of the President.
Although Marco Rubio apparently disagrees, expect the gap between the two, if any, to be papered over. Do not expect any commission to provide a real obstacle to conferring citizenship on millions of illegal aliens who will eventually become millions of automatically Democratic voters.
When I was young, a school sex scandal was when someone got some. Times evidently have changed, as reflected by two stories currently in the news.
In New York, there has been an uproar over a former music teacher who has been in the "rubber room" for 13 years. (In New York, teachers who deserve to be fired, but can't be because of union rules, are barred from the classroom but paid anyway. This status is referred to as the "rubber room.") Aryeh Eller was dismissed from the classroom in 1999 for repeated sexual harassment of female students. Since then, he has continued to draw a salary of $85,000 annually-nearly $1 million total, so far-for not teaching. His brother defends the practice:
"What do you expect? He's union," Ayton Eller said yesterday. "That's how much teachers get paid." ...
Ayton Eller said his brother is misunderstood. "He's a genius," he said. "He was always very smart. He's very talented."
No doubt. In addition to lavish benefits, his salary for not teaching continues to escalate:
His salary has steadily grown due to automatic longevity increases that are not affected by his "rubber-room" status.
We live in a world gone mad. A little closer to home, here in Minnesota, we have a school sex scandal of a different type-and a cheaper one, happily. The University of Minnesota, where one of my daughters is a student, is sponsoring a program on the female orgasm:
Orgasm aficionados and beginners of all genders are welcome to come learn about everything from multiple orgasms to that mysterious G-spot. Kate and Marshall cover it all with lots of humor, plenty of honesty, and an underlying message of sexual health and women's empowerment.
The NY Post illustrated its story on the U of M program with this photo, courtesy of Shutterstock
The event is co-sponsored by the Womens Center, Women's Student Activist Collective, Aurora Center for Advocacy & Education, GLBTA Programs Office (if you don't know, don't ask). We are still waiting for the first university program to celebrate the sexual health and men's empowerment exemplified by the male orgasm.
The good news is that this program cost *only* $3,400. Is it a complete waste of money? Suffice it to say that I have more confidence in America's youth than the administrators at the University of Minnesota do.
Yesterday, I fretted that the Republican members of the eight person "Gang" negotiating Senate immigration reform lack the knowledge of (and concern over) detail needed to prevent the Democratic members from outfoxing them on the issue of amnesty. This is a secondary matter, to be sure. The primary concern should be that amnesty is on the table at all, and I will have more to say about this soon, including a few words at the end of this post.
Turning back to the composition of the Gang, though, I should mention Sen. Marco Rubio's involvement. He is, after all, the key member - as a conservative Hispanic he provides the political "cover" that John McCain and Lindsey Graham cannot.
Rubio has already confessed his lack of expertise on the issue at hand. Yesterday, he said "I am clearly new to this issue in terms of the Senate." But, he added:
I'm not in terms of my life. I live surrounded by immigrants. My neighbors are immigrants. My family is immigrants. Married into a family of immigrants. I see immigration everyday. I see the good of immigration.
Welcome to policy analysis in the Age of Oprah.
In his self-promo, Rubio scrupulously avoided the phrase "illegal immigration." But that is the aspect of the immigration issue that amnesty pertains to.
Rubio also showed himself to be the perfect Gang companion for John McCain. The Arizona Senator has built a career around confusing his personal life experiences with policy expertise. McCain was tortured, so he knows that torture doesn't work. Never mind that the methods and intelligence expertise of the North Vietnamese in the late 1960s bear virtually no resemblance to those employed by the U.S. almost 40 years later. And never mind that, according to McCain's acceptance speech at the 2008 Republican convention, the North Vietnamese did, in fact, "break" him.
McCain was caught up in the Keating Five scandal in the 1990s, so he knows that money can corrupt even the most honest and heroic politicians. Therefore, he reckoned he was just the man to work across the aisle to "fix" our campaign finance system through the atrocity that became McCain-Feingold.
Now along comes Marco Rubio. He's surrounded by immigration and sees that it is good. Somehow, this general insight is supposed to give him the judgment and expertise to write complex legislation dealing with illegal immigration, a phenomenon he is either incapable of distinguishing, as a moral matter, from the legal variety or is unwilling to denounce.
Instead, Rubio instructs us that "we have to deal with the people who are here now in a way that's responsible but humane." But he doesn't explain how granting an eventual path to citizenship for illegal aliens meets this test. The people who are here illegally now already receive at least as many benefits as they deserve, having violated our laws. They have access to employment opportunities and to a vast array of services that they would not enjoy had they followed the law and not entered the U.S. - opportunities and services that are not enjoyed by those attempting to get into this country legally.
If the absence of a path to citizenship makes this deal insufficiently "humane" for illegal immigrants, then the "responsible" solution is for them to return to their country of origin, not for the U.S. to sweeten the deal. Perhaps Rubio's immersion in the world of immigrants prevents him from understanding this.
Naturally, there is much speculation about whether Rubio's collusion with the Senate's most liberal members, and with professional mavericks McCain and Graham, to bring about amnesty will affect his prospects for winning the Republican nomination. It certainly should.
The thought that love has no pride is an old one. Indeed, it has become something of a cliché. Yet it is achieved the status of cliché by virtue of the truth in it.
CBS's venerable 60 Minutes show brought us an example of the cliché in action over the weekend. 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft is smitten with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. He put his professional skills aside to do public relations for Obama and Clinton in their joint interview with him for the show.
A serious journalist might have tried to learn something on the issues of the day from them. Not Kroft. Lest there be any misunderstanding, Kroft thrust his tongue down their throats as fast as he could and kept it there for the duration.
"This is very improbable. This is not an interview I ever expected to be doing. But I understand, Mr. President, this was your idea. Why did you want to do this together, a joint interview?"
"There's no political tea leaves to be read here?"
"It's no secret that your aides cautioned you against-actually were against you offering Secretary Clinton this job. And you were just as determined not to take it. And you avoided taking her phone calls for awhile because you were afraid she was going to say no. Why were you so insistent about wanting her to be secretary of state?"
"You've been quoted as thinking or telling people that there was no way you were going to take this job and you weren't going to let anybody talk you into it. What did he say that night that made you [change your mind]?"
"What did he promise you? And has he kept the promises?"
Friedersdorf continues with Kroft's next four questions:
"Has she had much influence in this administration?"
"How would you characterize your relationship right now?"
"It's one thing to have disagreements between cabinet people. I spent time with both of you in the 2008 campaign. That was a very tough, bitter race. And I'm going to spare you reading some of the things that you said about each other during that campaign. But how long did it take you to get over that? And when did it happen?"
"You said the staff took a little longer to ignore, to forget the campaign stuff. What about the spouses? Is that an impertinent question?"
Go to Friedersdorf post for his commentary on these questions before he continues:
"This administration, I mean, you've generally gotten high marks. You've generally gotten very high marks, particularly from the voters for your handling of foreign policy. But there's no big, singular achievement that- in the first four years-that you can put your names on. What do you think the biggest success has been, foreign policy success, of the first term?"
"What's the, I have to ask you, what's the date of expiration on this endorsement? No, no, I have to ask that question. I mean, come on. You're - I mean, you're sitting here together. Everybody in town is talking about it already and the inter- and this is- it's taking place."
Then Kroft turns to Clinton's appearance before Congress last week to testify about the Benghazi massacre:
"I want to talk about the hearings this week. You had a very long day. Also, how is your health?"
"You said during the hearings, I mean, you've accepted responsibility. You've accepted the very critical findings of Admiral Mullen and Ambassador Pickering. As the New York Times put it, you accepted responsibility, but not blame. Do you feel guilty in any way, in-at a personal level? Do you blame yourself that you didn't know or that you should have known?"
"The biggest criticism of this team in the U.S. foreign policy from your political opposition has been what they say is an abdication of the United States on the world stage, sort of a reluctance to become involved in another entanglement, an unwillingness or what seems/appears to be an unwillingness to gauge big issues."
Kroft gave viewers, as Bob Dylan might put it, too much of nothing. What an embarrassment.
Paying tribute to the occasional virtues of 60 Minutes, my daughter Eliana has compiled a video to illustrate CBS's slobbering love affair with Obama (to borrow Bernard Goldberg's formulation). Clinton is of course also in the circle of love. The video below contrasts Kroft's treatment of Obama and Clinton with Leslie Stahl's treatment of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

"The Most Ridiculous Law of 2013" By Kevin Glass TownHall.com
Over the weekend, it became illegal to unlock and freely use one of the most important pieces of technology you own: your cell phone. From these discussions came the belief that the incident was spectacular, sophisticated and above all unprecedented.
Obama's South African Inspiration: Why It Matters By Joel B. Pollak Breitbart.com
In an interview with Breitbart News Editor-at-Large Ben Shapiro, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) made the astute observation that Barack Obama is not just skeptical of our Constitution, but also has an alternative model in mind: the South African constitution. That document has been the object of fascination and envy for the American legal left ever since it was negotiated and passed in the mid-1990s, during South Africa's transition to democracy.
We keep trying to understand the enigma of California, mostly why it still breathes for a while longer, given the efforts to destroy the sources of its success. Let's try to navigate through its sociology and politics to grasp why something that should not survive is surviving quite well -- at least in some places.
A long-running effort to protect critical infrastructure in the U.S. from cyber attacks collapsed in Congress last year. Despite this setback, different groups have continued their calls for more action in the wake of continuous threats, paving the way for the Obama administration to take the lead on cybersecurity policy -- perhaps in an executive order that could come early this year. Even with a new Congress in session, the president will argue that lawmakers aren't moving fast enough.
Last year, a new company named Planetary Resources announced seemingly audacious plans to privately prospect and mine asteroids. This past Tuesday, another company made a similar announcement. While they claim to have the same overall goals, there are some significant differences between Planetary Resources (PR) and the newcomer, Deep Space Industries (DSI). DSI will go beyond mining to include space-based manufacturing.
"Witness" by Whittaker Chambers recently turned 60, and journalists and scholars met at Yale University to celebrate this literary landmark and seminal text of the conservative movement. The discussion brought out divisions on the Right that actually go back to the Cold War.

29 Lawmakers Named Sentinels
Today we announced 29 Members of Congress - six Senators and 23 Representatives - achieved Sentinel status in the 112th Congress by scoring a 90% or higher on our comprehensive legislative scorecard.
Americans worried about our country's future should sleep better at night knowing a dedicated group of lawmakers are fighting for freedom every day in Washington. We congratulate these Sentinels who stood guard, vigilantly protecting our freedoms during the 112th Congress. Not only did they advance the conservative cause, but they also held back the incessant tide of tax increases, out-of-control spending, and harmful policies that breed dependency on government. In Washington, this is no easy task, which makes these Members all the more commendable.
Our country requires bold leadership and principled action. These Sentinels represent the tip of the spear in Washington, but they are not alone. All across the country citizen Sentinels are acting as America's firewall for freedom.
With each vote cast, freedom either advances or recedes, and citizen and congressional Sentinels are crucial to ensuring a prosperous and safe America.
It's only the second week and the Obama Administration already feels old and tired. Year in and year out, the President keeps saying the same things. Over and over again. By this point, we're tempted to simply tune him out.
Influential liberals have a new cause célèbre-income inequality.
The World Economic Forum's annual Davos Summit, where the elite meet to greet each other in the Swiss Alps, identified "severe income inequality as the most likely global risk." It's purportedly a bigger problem than food or water shortages, communicable diseases or "major systemic financial failure."
It would be tempting to stop right here and cheer. Some people are going to make more money than others in the years ahead; we already knew that. So where's the problem?
Barack Obama has compared himself to many Presidents. First he ran as Abraham Lincoln reincarnated. He even appealed to the spirit of Ronald Reagan. Then he tried to govern like Franklin D. Roosevelt. He campaigned for re-election as Harry Truman running against a "do-nothing" Congress. He's been to Osawatomie, Kansas, to channel Theodore Roosevelt.
His second inaugural address is no exception. It reads as if Obama lifted entire phrases from previous presidential speeches.

America's Role in a Darkening Age By Patrick J. Buchanan No longer do we hear chatter about the triumph of democratic capitalism, of America imposing her "global hegemony" or leading mankind into "a second American century." The hubris is gone, and triumphalism has given way to anxiety, apprehension, alarm. How should the United States deal with this darkening age?
Official Lies By Walter E. Williams A greater number of people are living off government welfare programs than are paying taxes. That's what's driving Europe's economic problems, and it's what's driving ours. The true tragedy is that just to acknowledge that fact is political suicide.
Hit with a drastic decrease in membership among traditional industry and government workers, the American Labor Unions have finally decided to return to their roots, re-examine their policies, and remember the original reason for their existence, which is to manipulate elections for political gain.
With this in mind, as well as to replenish their dwindling ranks, AFL-CIO is about to capitalize on its accumulated influence by organizing federal, state, and local politicians into a brand-new union of their own. According to Leon Zvernik, a local organizer in Washington, D.C., a new powerful entity called "Elected and Appointed Government Officials Union" is only days away from formulating its charter.
Experts are not surprised: labor unions have long become political organizations that propel elected and appointed officials into their careers...
Putting an end to the spate of recent unexpected discoveries by otherwise loyal journalists that he may be to the left of the county's political center, President Obama today signed an executive order moving the country's political center to the left, approximately two feet away from where he was sitting.
Many political commentators praised this as a "brilliant move," which promises to bring them back right into the mainstream. In addition, in the words of a newly centrist pundit Ed Shultz of the suddenly middle-of-the-road MSNBC network," this decision cements Obama's position as president of all the people, at least all the ones that count anyway."
Democratic Senator John Kerry thanked the President for giving him the opportunity, for the first time in his life, to experience being a centrist politician...
