Egypt to Receive F-16s

State Department refuses to delay delivery to Muslim Brotherhood-run Egypt
AP

BY: Adam Kredo

The State Department has refused to cancel or delay the delivery of several American-made F-16 fighter jets to Egypt, claiming that the arms deal serves America's "regional security interests," according to an official State Department document obtained by the Free Beacon.

The news that the Obama administration would uphold an aid package to Egypt that included the military hardware prompted concern on Capitol Hill from lawmakers who said the deal was not prudent given the political situation in Egypt, where Muslim Brotherhood-backed President Mohammed Morsi has clashed with democratic protestors.

"Sixteen F-16s and 200 Abrams tanks are to be given to the Egyptian government before the end of the year under a foreign aid deal signed in 2010 with then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak," Fox News reported Tuesday.

CCG Patriots,

There is no more fundamental Constitutionally guaranteed right than the RIGHT TO LIFE.  Over 55 million babies have been robbed of their right to life since Roe v. Wade in the mass genocide of abortion.  If you believe that abortion is a crime against the innocent and a plague which must be removed from our land, please DO something about it!  Join us and tens of thousands of other believers in every American's right to life at the 40th annual MARCH FOR LIFE in Washington DC on January 25th

You will make your voice heard on behalf of the innocent babies who are murdered every day and will be inspired and encouraged to fight on as courageous pro-life leaders in Congress share their passion for life.   Following the rally, in the Congressional office building, you will  have an opportunity to meet personally with Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick and other pro-life legislators to encourage them to support vital pro-life legislation.  We must continue to push for the complete defunding of Planned Parenthood which, according to Sandy, in 2011-12 was subsidized with half a Billion dollars of our money which supported the killing of 333,964 babies.

One of the most enjoyable ways to participate in the March is to join Sandy Slater,  president of the Bucks County Pro-Life Coalition and CCG Press Liaison, on the bus trip from St. Isidore's Church, that she organizes every year.  Sandy will update you on pro-life legislation on the trip down so you can talk to your representative.  Snacks, water, a comfortable ride with fellow pro-lifers, and dinner at a great buffet are all included for only $30.   Contact Sandy to sign up today (see attached flyer and info below).

     Please

copy and post this flyer

at your church (or organize your own church bus/van).  We must engage others in ACTION to fight this holocaust.   Hope to see you there, Jaime

 From SANDY SLATER :

You may know that the wonderful founder of the DC March for Life, Nellie Gray died at the age of 86 this past August. She had led the March for Life for 40 years. She is being succeeded by a board member, Jeanne Monahan. This March also marks the 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.

The purpose of the e-mail is to advise you that our Federal Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick again will meet with the participants in this event who are from Dtistrict 8. Because of the crowd and the number of congressmen who tried to accommodate us in DC last year, he would like to have a separate room for Bucks County District 8. This should enable better organization. I know some of the churches who are going to the March but probably not all. Therefore you may get another e-mail as well.

If you are planning to go to the March and would like to meet with Rep. Fitzpatrick, please respond to this e-mail to advise and possibly your number. He is making himself available between 2 & 5 PM on the day of the March 1/25/13. I do not know the place yet.

Another reason for the e-mail is if you have a particular concern or question, and these should be directed toward pro-life, you may want to formulate that beforehand to help him in helping you. There are many pro-life bills that have been introduced but they will have to be re-introduced

RNC for Life

600 Memorials for 55 Million Babies

Next Tuesday, January 22, 2013, the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court ruling which legalized abortion on demand, pro-life advocates across America are being urged to memorialize the 55 million pre-born babies who have been aborted since that ruling 40 years ago on that date.

When people want to express their sorrow for tragic deaths, they often bring symbols of their grief to the sites of the deaths, including candles, flowers and messages. When children are killed, those symbols often include stuffed animals and balloons, such as for the recent school massacre in Newtown. Pro-lifers can help commemorate the 55 million pre-born babies who were aborted before they could even take a breath.

RNC for Life is urging those who value the sanctity of life to remember those innocent babes by placing flowers, balloons and stuffed animals at the approximately 600 abortion facilities across America next Tuesday. We also encourage you to pray silently in front of the abortion facility after placing your memorial.

You don't have to spend much time at the abortuary and you don't have to spend much money on the symbols you place there. But these memorials - hopefully 600+ of them - will send a message to all who see them: Some of the 55 million innocents were killed HERE and we grieve for them.

We hope that these spontaneous memorials will be placed at every abortuary, accompanied by sweet reminders of unborn children and even messages to those innocent babies. We are confident that, in seeing these hundreds of memorials with thousands of participants, America will come to realize the magnitude of the horror that abortion is and has been for four decades. A flyer suitable to distribute is available here which will give you specific suggestions.

Please forward this to everyone you know who believes in the sanctity of Life. We must not let this infamous anniversary go by without memorializing these babes who have been murdered in the womb at the rate of about 3300 EVERY DAY!

Thank you for your help.

  National Review Online

Dear NR Friend,

It's time to lift ourselves off the mat, shake off the cobwebs, get reoriented, and start to fight back, to fight for our principles, to fight for our great nation.

It's time to honestly assess the conservative movement's priorities and to forge the way ahead.

That's why our friends at the National Review Institute are sponsoring an important, must-attend conference this January 25-27 in Washington, a critical summit where we can meet, talk, and forge The Future of Conservatism.

Your participation is vital. The National Review Institute's conservative summit will feature a tremendous line-up of leading conservatives and libertarians (and even a controversial figure or two) who will take part in developing a new and revitalized message for our movement. Confirmed speakers to date include

Gov. Scott Walker (WI), Gov. Bobby Jindal (LA), Gov. Bob McDonnell (VA), Rep. Paul Ryan (WI), Sen. Ted Cruz (TX), AG Ken Cuccinelli (VA), Mark Steyn, William Bennett, Charles Krauthammer, Jim DeMint, Larry Kudlow, Laura Ingraham, Hugh Hewitt, Jonah Goldberg, Michael Mukasey, Artur Davis, Rich Lowry, Mona Charen, Ralph Reed, Monica Crowley, Joe Scarborough, Mia Love, Robert Costa, Andrew McCarthy, John Allison, James Pethokoukis, Harold Hamm, Arthur Brooks, Maggie Gallagher, Kellyanne Conway, Kathryn Lopez, Reihan Salam, Mark Krikorian, Jay Nordlinger, John O'Sullivan, Heather Higgins, Peter Thiel, Darcy Olsen, Rob Long, Charles Kesler, Ed Whelan, John Podhoretz, John Fund, Ross Douthat, John Hood, Yuval Levin, Amity Shlaes, Tim Phillips, Travis Brown, and many more.

Be there as we listen to, engage, talk with, and derive inspiration from top conservative thinkers, writers, and politicians. The Future of Conservatism Summit will be a critical and memorable gathering, where wide-ranging discussion and debate will forge a successful vision for the movement and the cause of liberty.

The cost for the Summit, which includes participation in all events (receptions on Friday and Saturday nights, dinner on Saturday, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, lunch on Saturday and Sunday, plus panel sessions, debates, speeches, and "Night Owls") is only $250 a person (which doesn't even cover the per-person food bill!).

The agenda / itinerary is still being finalized as new speakers are being added, but here are some highlights:

  • Lunch speeches Governors Scott Walker and Bobby Jindal, Senator Ted Cruz, and former Congressman Artur Davis
  • Dinner speeches by Jim DeMint and Bill Bennett

  • Panels on "Selling Capitalism," the Constitution, what's being achieved in the states, demographics, energy, foreign policy, marriage,
  • and much more

If you've been to a previous NRI Summit, you know how invigorating they can be. They are -- and later this month will once again be -- an ideal opportunity to learn, to contribute, to network, to energize.

Please join us (NRI has made this especially affordable so you can attend). Get complete (developing) information www.nrinstitute.org/summit. You can also register there.

And you can get a special rate on a great hotel room at the Omni Shoreham Hotel -- do that here.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me at jfowler@nationalreview.com.

I look forward to seeing you in Washington this January 25-27 as we revitalize the conservative movement.

God bless,

2013 Salute the Troops

2013 Salute Our Troops!

Live Broadcast & Luncheon Event

Presidents Day, Monday, February 18, 2013, 11 AM
Crowne Plaza Valley Forge - 260 Mall Blvd - King Of Prussia, PA
Hosted by Dom Giordano and WPHT 1210 AM

Dear Members and Friends,

The major political battles of 2013 are about to commence.

Last year, the Association successfully lobbied against the phony "school choice" bill, SB 1, and supported HB 1330--the budget neutral expansion of the EITC scholarship fund . A version of HB 1330 was attached to another bill, approved by the Assembly, and signed into law by Governor Tom Corbett.

In addition, very early on, the Association backed the PA Voter ID bill--which also passed the Assembly and was signed into law.

Finally, the Association successfully lobbied the respective Governors of NJ and PA, Chris Christie and Tom Corbett, against establishing state health insurance exchanges--a fundamental requirement of ObamaCare.

This year, the Association will focus its limited funding, energy, and resources on a handful state and federal issues.

In this letter, we will emphasize important state battles shaping up in Harrisburg, Trenton, and Dover.

Harrisburg

Pennsylvania Right to Work is topic #1 as State Rep. Darryl Metcalfe and other legislators announce the reintroduction of a Right to Work bill during today's 11 AM Harrisburg Presser (details below).

Next on the agenda is State Rep. Matt Baker's Opt Out of ObamaCare legislation. This bill cleared the House Health Committee last session--only to whither on the vine. We must pass the bill in this session and persuade Gov. Corbett to sign it into law.

Also, we have been working behind the scenes with State Reps. Stephen Barrar and Darryl Metcalfe to enact legislation allowing any registered Pennsylvania voter to poll watch at any precinct within the boundaries of the Commonwealth.

Trenton

In New Jersey, we will press Governor Christie to veto proposed bills seeking to increase the minimum wage and restrict 2nd Amendment Rights.

Dover

In Delaware, we will join efforts to stop the numerous gun control bills that have been introduced in the state legislature.

In the coming days, there will be plenty of opportunities for us to demonstrate our commitment to conservative values.

From tomorrow's Right to Work press conference to Dom Giordano's Salute Our Troops (Presidents Day, February 18), there are three terrific events being hosted by four great organizations.

1. Book Discussion Group with Professor Thomas Partick Burke

When: Thursday, January 24, 2013, 7:30-9:30 PM

Where: 104 Haverford Road, Wynnewood, PA 19096

Sponsored by the Wynnewood Institute.

Book choice: Continue reading George Gilder's Man and Marriage or begin a new book.

Participation is free and open to the public. If you wish to attend, send an email to wynnewood@wynnewood.org. Please include a telephone number where you can be reached in case of an emergency.

2. Right to Keep & Bear Arms--A Peaceful Demonstration

When: Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, 10 AM

Where: State Capitol, 125 West State Street, Trenton, NJ

Sponsored by the New Jersey Second Amendment Society

3. 2nd Annual Salute Our Troops! Live Broadcast and Luncheon

When: Presidents Day, Monday, February 18, 2013, 11 AM

Where: Crowne Plaza Valley Forge, 260 Mall Blvd, King of Prussia, PA

Cost: $25 per person

Hosted by Dom Giordano and WPHT 1210 AM.

Before signing-off, I would like to acknowledge one of the saddest anniversary dates in our nation's history.

Forty years ago today, Roe v. Wade became the law of land--overturning some form of legal protection for unborn children in every state in the union.

Since that tragic day, it is estimated that well over 50 million lives have been ended through the controversial practice of abortion.

Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, as a conservative, you must

recognize the disastrous legal consequences of the US Supreme Court's decision which made a mockery of states rights.

We can all agree that the Warren Court's decision demonstrated a virulent contempt for the US Constitution and its 10th Amendment.

We can also agree that taxpayer funded abortion is a grave moral affront to those among us who believe that the sanctity of innocent human life is paramount.

On behalf of the Association Board of Directors,

Teri Adams

Metcalfe Seeks to Make Federal Gun-Grabbing A Criminal Offense in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG - State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) today announced his legislation that would make any new federal gun control laws unenforceable within the Commonwealth.

"Passage of my legislation will send the message that there will never be additional gun control, anywhere in Pennsylvania," said Metcalfe. "Whether by White House executive orders, congressional fiat, or judicial activism, we will never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murderers in order advance their senseless gun-grabbing agenda which would only succeed in replacing one of our most sacred personal liberties with the chains of government tyranny."

Similar to legislation most recently introduced in Wyoming and Texas, Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act (House Bill 357) would:

  • Prohibit enforcement of any new federal registration, restriction or prohibition requirement for privately owned firearms, magazines and ammunition.
  • Require the state of Pennsylvania, including the Office of Attorney General, to intercede on behalf of Commonwealth citizens against any federal attempt to register, restrict or ban the purchase or ownership of firearms and firearms accessories which are currently legal products.

Final enactment of Metcalfe's Right to Bear Arms Protection Act would mean that anyone - even federal agents - who try to enforce any type of gun control restriction within state borders would face arrest and being charged with a felony offense.

"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned," said Metcalfe. "Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that no level of government, especially the federal government, has any authority whatsoever to impose senseless restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners, or worse, the confiscation of legally owned firearms. The purpose of my legislation is to force any gun-grabbing federal official to count the costs of unconstitutionally disarming or denying Pennsylvania citizens their God-given right to keep and bear arms."

Metcalfe is also calling on all Pennsylvania citizens who support Constitutional liberty to attend Pennsylvania's annual Second Amendment Action Day on Tuesday, April 23, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, and to sign the all-new Armed Pennsylvania: Say to No Gun Control petition by visiting

ACTION ALERT

January 7, 2013

ALERT:

On Monday, President Barack Obama nominated former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel to be his next Secretary of Defense in succession to Leon Panetta. Chuck Hagel's record is one of being a frightening and dangerous apologist for terrorist groups like Hamas and Hizballah, as well as for the Iranian terrorist regime, while being arguably one of the most vicious and hostile critics of Israel. The ZOA believes that appointing Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary would also serve to confirm the fears that many have that President Obama is no friend of Israel and is not serious about stopping Iran's nuclear program.

ACTION:

Please call your U.S. Senators to urge President Obama not to nominate Chuck Hagel and to vote against his appointment if Hagel's name goes forward for Secretary of Defense. You can reach all U.S. Senators through the Capitol Hill switchboard: 202-224-3121.

Call Sen. Casey 202-224-6324

Call Sen. Toomey 202-224-4254

New Jersey:

Call Sen. Lautenberg 202-224-3224

Call Sen. Menendez 202-224-4744

Delaware:

Call Sen. Carper 202-224-2441

Call Sen. Coons 202-224-5042

BACKGROUND:

  • In 2009, Hagel signed a letter urging President Obama to begin direct negotiations with Hamas, a U.S. designated terrorist group committed in its Charter to the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews, a position President Obama has not taken up.
  • In 2008, Hagel was "solely responsible" for blocking an Iran sanctions bill (Seth Colter Walls, 'Dems Blame Senate GOP For Blocking Iran Sanctions Bill,' Huffington Post, March 10, 2008).
  • In a 2006 interview with former Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller, Hagel said that "the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people" on Capitol Hill ('Hagel named to intelligence board,' Jewish Telegraphic Agency, October 29, 2009).
  • In August 2006, Hagel was one of only 12 Senators who refused to formally call upon the European Union to designate as a terrorist organization Hizballah, which in 1983 murdered 242 U.S. marines in Beirut ('NJDC Criticizes Senators for Refusing to Call on EU to add Hezbollah to List of Terrorist Organizations,' National Jewish Democratic Council press release, August 7, 2006).
  • In July 2006, at the outbreak of the Lebanon war, Hagel argued against giving Israel the time to break Hizballah, urging instead an immediate ceasefire ('Key Republican breaks with Bush on Mideast,' CNN.com, July 31, 2006).
  • December 2005: Hagel was one of only 27 senators who refused to sign a letter to President Bush urging him to pressure the Palestinian Authority (PA) to ban terrorist groups from participating in Palestinian legislative elections.
  • June 2004, Hagel refused to sign a letter urging President Bush to highlight Iran's nuclear program at the G-8 summit and was one of only two senators in to vote against renewal of the Libya-Iran sanctions act.
  • November 2001: Hagel was one of only 11 senators who refused to sign a letter urging President Bush not to meet with the late Yasser Arafat until his forces ended the violence against Israel.
  • In July 2001, Hagel was one of only two senators to vote against extending the original Iranian sanctions bill.
  • October 2000: Hagel was one of only four senators who refused to sign a Senate letter in support of Israel.

Infiltrated

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.

Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.

The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.

A Plan to Stop Agenda 21

It's time to get very serious about stopping the forces of tyranny.

There is no tomorrow.

That's why today I am preparing a plan for the strongest action ever taken to stop Agenda 21.

But I need your help to make it work.

Enclosed with this letter, is a "Stop Agenda 21 Proposed Budget."

This is a major push forward for APC in the battle to stop Agenda 21, and I need you to look it over and sign your approval to it.

Let me explain this vital project.

Across the nation, individuals and local activists have been working to stop the ravages of Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development. And we have won some astounding victories.

We've made Agenda 21 a major issue.

But we are vastly outgunned by the Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are pushing this agenda from the UN all the way to your city council.

They are flooding state capitals with lobbyists, money, and a flood of issue documents. They are rich, powerful and well organized.

We aren't. We are a rag tag band of dedicated activists with passion for the cause of freedom and little else.

That has got to change.

Our activists need the tools necessary to win.

That's just what my "Stop Agenda 21" project is designed to provide.

Here are the details:

Sowell: Do Gun Control Laws Control Guns?
By GOPUSA Staff January 22, 2013

The gun control controversy is only the latest of many issues to be debated almost solely in terms of fixed preconceptions, with little or no examination of hard facts.

Media discussions of gun control are dominated by two factors: the National Rifle Association and the Second Amendment. But the over-riding factual question is whether gun control laws actually reduce gun crimes in general or murder rates in particular.

If, as gun control advocates claim, gun control laws really do control guns and save lives, there is nothing to prevent repealing the Second Amendment, any more than there was anything to prevent repealing the Eighteenth Amendment that created Prohibition.

But, if the hard facts show that gun control laws do not actually control guns, but instead lead to more armed robberies and higher murder rates after law-abiding citizens are disarmed, then gun control laws would be a bad idea, even if there were no Second Amendment and no National Rifle Association.

The central issue boils down to the question: What are the facts? Yet there are many zealots who seem utterly unconcerned about facts or about their own lack of knowledge of facts.

RedState Morning Briefing

RedState Morning Briefing

For January 24, 2013

1.  Hillary's irrelevant testimony, WMD intel and Matt Ryan

Matt Ryan is a generally competent NFL quarterback who has led my Atlanta Falcons to their best consecutive seasons' run since he took over for Michael Vick five years ago. But I saw his two turnovers in the second half of their NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday. No post-game news conference can change the fact of his responsibility (and those of other teammates) for the failure of his team to reach the Super Bowl.

What has this to do with Hillary Clinton's testimony before the House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations Committees today, much less the ancient story of false intel on WMD stockpiles in Iraq before our 2003 invasion? With respect to the latter, it is next to impossible to prove a negative, so that, especially after 9/11, a lack of intelligence identifying the presence of WMD in Iraq could not have outweighed the public behavior of Saddam Hussein consistent with the presence of such weapons coupled with the risk that he would use them again, as he had in the past.  . . . please click here for the rest of the post

2.  What Did Margaret Sanger Think about Abortion?

January 22nd, 2013, is the anniversary of a date that should live in infamy. It was the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion throughout the United States.

At the forefront of the pro-abortion movement stands Planned Parenthood. Margaret Sanger, the organization's founder, has a reputation as both a racist and eugenicist, but her words on abortion might surprise people. Take a look at some of her writings . . . please click here for the rest of the post

3.  Facing the Reality of Obamacare, Entitlements, and Budgets

If conservatives really desire to use this temporary debt increase to regroup and unite behind entitlement reform, they should fulfill their promise to block any CR that contains funding for Obamacare.  Let's confront a reality: entitlement reform is mostly about free market healthcare reforms, most notably, restructuring Medicare and Medicaid.  Yet, we will never have the ability to change these 50-year-old programs until we disrupt the new behemoth from taking root.  When fully enacted, Obamacare will take over 1/6 of our economy, create permanent dependency for tens of millions of Americans, induce unsustainable inflationary pressure on the cost of healthcare and health insurance, and saddle the next generation with crippling debt.

If we've learned anything from past experiences, it's that no government entitlement program is ever repealed once the dependency takes root. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

4.  "No Budget, No Pay" bill passes the House.

Basically, what's going to happen is this: if the bill passes in the Senate then both the House and Senate will be under the gun to pass a budget in their respective chambers by April 15th. If the Senate does not - and let's be honest; it's the Senate that's the problem - then the Senate doesn't get paid until they do. The House Republican caucus was generally behind this bill (it's linked to a three-month extension of the debt ceiling, which is the only reason why it might not have been); Senate Democrats are still kind of mumbling about it for the moment. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

NEW ON PJ MEDIA
"Fascism" was a very successful mass movement in Western Europe for an entire generation, and it flourishes in many countries today. It behooves us to understand why it was so popular, and how most of our politics differ from it. We have fascist economics, but certainly not fascist politics or foreign policy in America today, even though there are echoes of it every so often.

Clearly the Algerian hostage-takers' religion was important -- indeed central -- to their motives and goals for undertaking this savage attack; yet mainstream media coverage has followed the usual patterns, downplaying or ignoring outright what the attackers said about what they were hoping to accomplish, since these statements lead to questions about Islam that they would prefer not be asked.

TOP STORIES ON PJ MEDIA
Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi's own pronouncements over the past decade, as well as those of leading Muslim Brotherhood religious leaders, represent the living legacy of traditionalist Islamic Jew-hatred and jihadism. Ignoring this ugly, deeply rooted context is not only morally reprehensible, it will perpetuate current delusive U.S. policies towards Egypt which endanger regional and global security

Women rush from one triviality to the next, consume gossip and trash, then wonder why America is falling apart. Between all these zombies and werewolves and bloodsuckers -- and transparently shallow "real" women who are literally made of plastic -- why do we insist upon surrounding ourselves with "glamorous" ghosts? Time to put your brain on a diet.

Hillary On The Hill

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton finally testified on Capitol Hill concerning what she knew about the murderous attack that took the lives of four brave Americans at our consulate in Benghazi, Libya. As expected, there were no major revelations from Clinton who, while admitting she was "responsible," denied she should be blamed.

Secretary Clinton did admit that she never read the repeated requests for additional security at the consulate. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) suggested Clinton should have been relieved of her duties for not reading the cables.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) expressed his frustration with Clinton's lack of clear answers, saying, "Here we are, four months later, and we still don't have the basic information. The American people deserve to know answers and they certainly don't deserve false answers."

Clinton insisted she was not involved in producing the inaccurate talking points used by Ambassador Susan Rice on five major talk shows claiming the attacks were due to protests about an anti-Islamic film. When pressed by Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) about the administration's shifting explanations for the attacks, Secretary Clinton lost her temper and shouted, "What difference would it make?"

Let's answer her question. The difference is that when the administration blamed a film it was suggested that Americans died because of our First Amendment rights. Our liberty is not the problem, Mrs. Clinton. When you tell the truth -- that it was because of Al Qaeda-linked extremists -- you educate the American people about the real enemy and the evil agenda of radical Islam.

Al Qaeda On The March

When the sorry history of the Obama years is finally written, one of the most bitter chapters will be the colossal failure of his naïve foreign policy. The New York Times reported yesterday that some of the jihadists involved in the Benghazi attacks were also part of the recent raid on an energy facility in Algeria that left more than three dozen hostages dead, including several Americans.

Contrary to Obama's claims, Al Qaeda and its allies have not been defeated. On Obama's watch, pro-American leaders have been replaced with anti-American dictators or chaos. That strategic shift has made North Africa and the Middle East a more dangerous place for Israel and the United States.

Even now evidence of Obama's failure is obvious. For example, just like Egypt and the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Obama administration was so focused on removing Muammar Qadhafi that it lost sight of what would happen once he was gone. Libyan weapons, including shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, are turning up all over the Middle East. Weapons used in the attack in Algeria apparently originated in Libya.

Here's an easy prediction: As the U.S. shoots its way out of Afghanistan and pivots to the Pacific, the Middle East will be left to the tender mercies of a nuclear-armed Iran and its terrorist proxies. We will be leaving behind thousands of Americans working in the energy industry, in trade groups, in religious ministries, etc. -- all of whom will be targets for jihadists.

Expect to see more Americans taken hostage or worse in the days ahead. Expect the media never to point to Obama's failed policies as the reason.

Polling As Propaganda

Once again nervous nellies on the right and political analysts on the left are citing some distorted polls to suggest the country is more supportive of abortion and less pro-life. They do this by citing growing support for the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision.

This is nothing new. Polls have routinely shown support for Roe to be significantly higher than support for abortion generally for the simple reason that the public doesn't know what Roe did. Adding to the confusion is that pollsters with an agenda (like the recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll) often inaccurately claim that Roe permitted abortion only in the first trimester.

But Roe led to a legal regime in which abortion is allowed in all nine months of pregnancy for almost any reason -- an extreme position supported by a very small minority of the public and Barack Obama.

Don't be fooled, my friends. The overwhelming majority of Americans support limits to abortion on demand. Last year, Gallup found that the percentage of Americans identifying as "pro-choice" hit a record low.

The Classless Left

Obama's inaugural showed how little class the left has. When Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) made his way down the Capitol steps for the inauguration, the pro-Obama crowd started booing. Now we know who started the cascade of boos. According to National Review, Dan Freeman "proudly announced" it on his Facebook page, posting "Just started the crowd booing when Paul Ryan came out."

Freeman is not just some overly enthusiastic Obama volunteer. As National Review notes, Freeman is a lawyer in the Voting Section at the Justice Department. He came to that post from the New York Civil Liberties Union, where he helped undermine Bush Administration national security policies as he fought to give the foreign terrorist detainees at GITMO constitutional rights.

By the way, Freeman is not a political appointee. He has burrowed into the civil service, meaning he may be there to undermine the next conservative president.

National Marriage Week

The battle for traditional marriage remains one of the major flashpoints in America's culture war. Barack Obama cited men "marrying" men as one of the great challenges of our time in his inaugural address. Utah's ban on polygamy is facing a legal challenge in federal court. And in a matter of weeks, the Supreme Court will hear cases seeking to overturn both state and federal laws defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The news is depressing and, more often than not, there is little the average person can do. That's why I am so pleased to tell you about National Marriage Week!

Across the country, there will be a grassroots campaign to encourage and strengthen normal marriage during the week of February 7th through the 14th. This effort is led by my good friend Chuck Stetson and the folks at National Marriage Week USA.

National Marriage Week is not about being against something, but rather about promoting what thousands of years of history, academic research and common sense tell us is right -- that marriage is the union of one man and one woman and the best environment for raising healthy children and stable societies.

Panetta to lift ban on women in combat

Published January 23, 2013

Women in all branches of the military soon will have unprecedented opportunities to serve on the front lines of the nation's wars.

Leon Panetta, in one of his last acts as President Obama's defense secretary, is preparing to announce the policy change, which would open hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and potentially elite commando jobs after more than a decade at war, the Pentagon confirmed Wednesday.

The groundbreaking move recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff overturns a 1994 rule banning women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Panetta's decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.

"This policy change will initiate a process whereby the services will develop plans to implement this decision, which was made by the secretary of defense upon the recommendation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff," a senior defense official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

Some front-line military roles may open to women as soon as this year. Assessments for others, such as special operations forces, including Navy SEALS and the Army's Delta Force, may take longer.

The Disgrace of Benghazi

By Discover The Networks

The most remarkable fact about the ill-fated U.S. consulate in Benghazi is not how the Obama administration allowed terrorists to slaughter 4 innocent Americans in cold blood, but rather, how it used the consulate to facilitate U.S. aid to Al Qaeda-affiliated jihadists in Libya and Syria.

I just received the email below from Sharon, a friend from the Sacramento chapter of ACT! for America.  Made the call, which was answered on the first ring.  Finished in about a minute.  Totally worth it!

Dave

Please call the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee: Michael McCaul and express a desire to have the Committee investigate the sale of Current Cable TV to a group (Qatar) that encourages/funds jihad - violent and stealth.  It is like giving Tokyo Rose, or Goebbels, a TV station during WWII!

The number is: 202-226-8417

I called this number before I sent this note and the staffer took my concerns and added them to a growing list of people calling in about this issue. The more we call the more we get their attention. The staffer was very polite and I cannot complain at all of his taking my concern.  THE STAFFER REQUIRES NO PERSONAL INFORMATION.

You know what is sickening is that I heard that Feinstein's husband has a tie to this sale too.

I listened to this series of internet radio about this sale, here is the link to part 1, and you can see the links to part 2 and 3 on the side: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/28514689

Current situation: Staffers talk about first meeting with Al Jazeera

By LINDA STASI  January 8, 2013

Just call him Al Gorezeera. Yesterday morning, the still shell shocked staff at Current TV was called to an all hands staff meeting at its San Francisco headquarters, which was teleconferenced to their offices in LA and NYC, to meet their new bosses. That would be two of Al Jazeera's top guys: Ehab Al Shihabi, executive director of international operations, and Muftah AlSuwaidan, general manager of the London bureau.

Ominously missing was the creator of Current, the self proclaimed inventor of the Internet and savior of clean energy, Al Gore, although his partner, Joel Hyatt, stood proudly with the Al Jazeera honchos.  "Of course Al didn't show up," said one high placed Current staffer. "He has no credibility.

"He's supposed to be the face of clean energy and just sold [the channel] to very big oil, the emir of Qatar! Current never even took big oil advertising-and Al Gore, that bulls***ter sells to the emir?"

The meeting, while not contentious, was, according to staffers who spoke on the condition of anonymity, miserable. The mostly left-leaning group-some still in denial -weren't buying what Al Jazeera was selling.

And what are they selling? Al Jazeera's image of -are you ready?- "inform, inspire and entertain!"

The "new" American Al Jazeera will, according to Shihabi, appeal to the American audience with a mixture of national and international news-and, of course, entertainment. But you won't be getting that Middle East merriment until April, which is when the network says it will be ready to take over. "Sometime within three months-no more, no less-we were told," said the Current staffer.

One person at the meeting, who has already announced that she's leaving, former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, tried to ask about severance packages for those who wouldn't be staying. "This isn't the place to discuss this!" Hyatt barked at her.

"After that, everyone kept their questions pretty much to themselves," according to the staff member. How do they feel about Gore the savior of green energy now?

McDonald's settles Mich. suit over Islamic diet

By JEFF KAROUB | Associated Press - January 21, 2013

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - McDonald's and one of its franchise owners agreed to pay $700,000 to members of the Muslim community to settle allegations a Detroit-area restaurant falsely advertised its food as being prepared according to Islamic dietary law.

McDonald's and Finley's Management Co. agreed Friday to the tentative settlement, with that money to be shared by Dearborn Heights resident Ahmed Ahmed, a Detroit health clinic, the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn and lawyers.

Ahmed's attorney, Kassem Dakhlallah, told The Associated Press on Monday that he's "thrilled" with the preliminary deal that's expected to be finalized March 1. McDonald's and Finley's Management deny any liability but say the settlement is in their best interests.

The lawsuit alleged that Ahmed bought a chicken sandwich in September 2011 at a Dearborn McDonald's but found it wasn't halal - meaning it didn't meet Islamic requirements for preparing food. Islam forbids consumption of pork, and God's name must be invoked before an animal providing meat for consumption is slaughtered.

Dakhlallah said there are only two McDonald's in the United States that sell halal products and both are in Dearborn, which has one of the nation's largest Arab and Muslim communities. Overall, the Detroit area is home to about 150,000 Muslims of many different ethnicities.

The locations advertise that they exclusively sell halal Chicken McNuggets and McChicken sandwiches and they have to get those products from an approved halal provider, Dakhlallah said. He said there was no evidence of problems on the production side, but he alleges that the Dearborn location on Ford Road sold non-halal products when it ran out of halal.

Dakhlallah said he was approached by Ahmed, and they conducted an investigation. A letter sent to McDonald's Corp. and Finley's Management by Dakhlallah's firm said Ahmed had "confirmed from a source familiar with the inventory" that the restaurant had sold non-halal food "on many occasions."

After they received no response to the letter, Dakhlallah said, they filed a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court in November 2011 as part of a class action.

For the record, I made a $50 donation to each primary candidate who would dare to speak about the threat of Islam, whenever they did so, and Michelle Bachman earned my support.  Let's hope that, next time, the public will be more ready to deal with reality than they were in the 2012 election cycle.

Reconsidering Michele Bachmann

January 21, 2013 by John Hinderaker

The Washington Post reports today that al Qaeda's successful attack on the Algerian natural gas plant has greatly boosted al Qaeda's prestige in Africa. Along the way, the Post notes rather casually:

The assailants were well-trained and armed with what appear to have been weapons from the late Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi's arsenal.

The overthrow of Moammar Gaddafi has turned out to be a terrible blunder. It has empowered radical Muslims, led directly to the Benghazi debacle, and scattered Gaddafi's armory among terrorist elements, including al Qaeda. There has been, of course, no accountability for the Libya decision, either with respect to the Obama administration or others outside the administration who supported Obama's policy.

All of which reminded me of Andy McCarthy's column in National Review. McCarthy criticizes John McCain for his support of Obama's failed Libya policy, and contrasts McCain with another Republican who gets less respect as a foreign policy expert:

[T]he senator and his allies in the Obama-Clinton State Department had a brilliant notion: The reason the "rebels" of eastern Libya hated America so much had nothing to do with their totalitarian, incorrigibly anti-Western ideology. No, no: The problem was that we sided with Qaddafi, giving the dictator - at the insistence of, well, McCain and the State Department - foreign aid, military assistance, and international legitimacy. If we just threw Qaddafi under the bus, the rebels would surely become our grand democratic allies.

This, of course, was a much more sophisticated theory than you'd get from lunatics like Michele Bachmann. Sit down for this, because I know it's hard to believe anyone could spout such nutter stuff, but Bachmann actually opposed U.S. intervention in Libya. She claimed - stop cackling! - that many of McCain's heroes might actually be jihadists ideologically hostile to the U.S. and linked to groups such as al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the terror enterprise's North African franchise. She even thought - yeah, I know, crazy - that if Qaddafi were deposed, the heroes would get their hands on his arsenal, ship a lot of it to AQIM havens in places such as Mali and Algeria, and maybe even turn rebel strongholds such as Benghazi into death traps for Americans.

Good thing we listened to McCain, no?

McCarthy moves on to Egypt:

Now, however, McCain says he will push for American taxpayers to fork up another $480 million for Morsi. Or, to be accurate, borrow another $480 million. You see, the United States is already so deep in the red that a $16.3 trillion debt ceiling is not high enough. In fact, we're such a basket case that our debt-service and "entitlement" payments alone put us in a quarter-trillion-dollar deficit hole even before we borrow and print another trillion-plus for such ancillary expenses as the Defense Department, the Obama family's vacations, and the $80-odd million that funds "democratization" programs at McCain's International Republican Institute. But hey, no problem - what's another $480 million on top of the $2 billion-plus the Obama administration has already extended to Morsi's regime . . . to say nothing of the sizable U.S. taxpayer chunk of the $4.8 billion IMF loan the Brotherhood government is also about to get its mitts on?

Naturally, "extremist" conservatives like Michele Bachmann are wet blankets when it comes to this gravy train, too. Get this: She thinks that when you get to the point where you have to borrow in order to pay the interest on the loans you already can't pay off, somebody needs to cut off your credit line - not inflate it by another two or three trill. Even more daft: She thinks that if you subsidize an organization, like the Brotherhood, that promotes sharia and Hamas, you're apt to get more sharia and more terrorism.

Andy notes something of which I was unaware-an effort to kick Michele Bachmann off the Intelligence Committee because she had the temerity to suggest that it was a bad idea for the Secretary of State to employ a staffer with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

McCain, between praising his Islamist "heroes" and championing ever more funding for Islamist Egypt, made certain to lambaste Bachmann on the floor of the Senate over her concerns about Brotherhood infiltration of our government - leading other influential Republicans to follow suit. And now, aping that display, People for the American Way - "PAW," the outfit created by a hard-left Hollywood icon to smear Robert Bork and derail his Supreme Court nomination - is campaigning to have Bachmann booted from the House Intelligence Committee.

There is a war on over the course of American foreign policy and the security of the United States. The Left has aligned with the Brotherhood - some naïvely relying on the fiction that the Brothers are not the enemy vanguard, others seeing the Brothers as comrades in the quest for a utopian, post-American future. In opposition, the GOP can either continue looking to McCain for leadership or rally behind Bachmann the way the Left always circles the wagons around its stalwarts.

McCarthy isn't sanguine about which way the GOP will jump.

All of this reminded me of the dark days of 2008, when the original TARP bill was cobbled together virtually overnight in response to panicked assertions by President Bush's advisers that a financial collapse was in the offing. I didn't blame Bush at the time for going along with the advice he was getting, but with hindsight, TARP was a huge mistake. Once the bailouts started, there was no turning back, and the result, a mere four years later, is that the relationship between the the federal government and the private sector has dramatically changed, perhaps forever. Whatever the result of letting one or two major banks fail might have been, it would have been far better than the state capitalism that we have been bequeathed by the Obama administration.

So once again, it is worth asking, who had the foresight back in 2008 to see where all of this was going and to stand vigorously against it? Well, Michele Bachmann, for one.

Report: Gen. Mattis Forced Out of CENTCOM for Questioning Obama's Advisers

21 Jan 2013

Reports indicate that Marine General James Mattis is being forced out of CENTCOM for questioning certain aspects of the Obama administration's Middle East policy.

In particular, it appears his questions surrounding the U.S. response to Iran's nuclear ambitions drew the ire of civilian military and security advisers.

These civilians were apparently upset by the way Mattis pushed them to "consider second and third-order consequences of military action against Iran." Nor did they appreciate the way he pushed them to think long term and consider what the U.S. will do if Iran develops non-nuclear weapons that can be used to keep U.S. ships out of the Persian Gulf.

Mattis also expressed concern over the consequences of certain aspects of the U.S. approach to Afghanistan and Pakistan. It seems this line of reasoning didn't sit well with National Security Adviser Tom Donilon.

News from The Hill:

Boehner: Obama's goal is to 'annihilate' the GOP
By Jonathan Easley

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he believes the primary goal of President Obama's second term is to "annihilate the Republican Party."

"Given what we heard yesterday about the president's vision for his second term, it's pretty clear to me that he knows he can't do any of that as long as the House is controlled by Republicans," Boehner said in a speech Tuesday to The Ripon Society. "So we're expecting over the next 22 months to be the focus of this administration as they attempt to annihilate the Republican Party.

"And let me just tell you, I do believe that is their goal - to just shove us into the dustbin of history."

News from The Hill:

House passes 'No Budget, No Pay,' sends to the Senate
By Pete Kasperowicz

The House on Wednesday put new pressure on the Senate to pass its first budget in nearly four years, by approving a bill that threatens to withhold senators' pay until that work is done.

The House approved the No Budget, No Pay Act in a 285-144 vote. Among Republicans, 33 voted against it to protest the absence of specific spending cuts in a bill that essentially extends the debt ceiling. But they were more than offset by the 86 Democrats who voted for the measure.

The bill suspends the debt ceiling until May 18, and requires each chamber to pass a budget by April 15 or have its members face a suspension of pay. Republicans are hoping the bill gives Congress a few months to find a longer-term debt ceiling agreement that includes significant spending cuts.

January 23, 2013, 7 PM

Dear Members and Friends,

We would like to express our gratitude to Pennsylvania State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe

for organizing yesterday's successful Right to Work press conference (held in

the Harrisburg Capitol Building), andfor re-introducing Right to Work legislation

in the current session of the PA Assembly.

The Independence Hall Tea Party Association was proud to stand at the podium with

leaders of 15 other civic groups from around the state in support of the six separate

companion bills which, taken together, represent the Pennsylvania's current Right to

Work initiative.

Please find the press release, below, which outlines the Association's reasons for

supporting the bill.

For more information on the Presser, read Bill Lawrence's column by clicking on the

following link:

http://blog.billlawrenceonline.com/2013/01/22/right-to-work-program-unveiled-in-pa.aspx

Note: The Bill Lawrence column reports that three of the nearly 20 speakers publicly

criticized Governor Tom Corbett who has promised to sign any part of the

Right to Work legislation that reaches his desk.

(One speech, in particular, crossed the line.)

While we wish Governor Corbett would take a leadership role in promoting this

legislative initiative, we do not think lashing out at the Governor during a

public press conference is an appropriate response. Such behavior is

counter-productive and plays into the hands of the opposition.

In other matters, please watch US Senator Rand Paul's superb cross-examination of

Hillary Clinton during today's Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on

Benghazi.

Senator Paul's demeanor and tone were perfect! Please view the exchange by clicking the following You Tube link:

Normally, we would not refer you to a video segment of MSNBC's The Morning

Joe Show, but in all fairness, the following clip provides a fascinating insight into the

current political climate in DC as it relates to the Debt Ceiling crisis and other matters.

The Morning Joe Panel

As the nominating process for US Defense Secretary gets underway, we wish to

inform you that the Association intends to formally announce its opposition to the

nomination of former Republican Senator, Chuck Hagel.

After carefully considering the objections of the Republican Jewish Coalition, and

other leading voices in the conservative movement, we feel compelled to issue a strong

statement condemning the Obama appointment.

Tea Party Group Backs Right to Work Bill;

Says Workers Shouldn't Be Forced to Join Unions

Harrisburg, PA (January 23, 2013) -- The Independence Hall Tea Party Association, the largest independent Tea Party group in the tri-state region, announced that it is supporting "Pennsylvania Open Workforce Initiative," which was the subject of yesterday's press conference organized by State Representative Daryl Metcalfe and held in the Capitol Building.

Association members were on hand to support the bill.

"It's about time Pennsylvania becomes a Right to Work state," said

Association President Teri Adams.

"With a Republican legislature and a Republican Governor, it's only logical that Right to Work legislation take center stage."

"Right now, the economy and jobs are the biggest concerns of Pennsylvanians.

"If Pennsylvania becomes the 25th Right to Work state, the business climate should improve significantly," said Ms. Adams.

"Every state that has enacted Right to Work legislation has seen dramatic improvement of its overall economy--including an increase in employment.

"We also strongly believe that coercing workers to join a union and pay weekly union dues, against their will, is undemocratic and un-American.

"Additionally, compulsory union dues are frequently used to fund political candidates and organizations--often at variance with the political beliefs and wishes of workers.

"Each individual worker should be allowed to determine for himself/herself, how his/her hard earned money is spent."

Ending gun violence requires commitment (of crazies)

The good news is: Obama and the Senate Democrats have no intention of passing more idiotic gun legislation in response to the Newtown massacre. The bad news is that they also have no intention of passing any legislation about the mentally ill, which would actually do something to reduce these mass shootings.

Instead, the Democrats will jawbone about "assault weapons" and other meaningless gun laws for the sole purpose of scaring soccer moms into hating the National Rifle Association. Expect to hear a lot about Republicans preferring "the gun lobby" to "children" (which is evidently not at all like preferring the teachers lobby to children).

Even liberals are prone to being effusive about the intellect and perspicacity of Thomas Jefferson. That is, until they actually look at the results of that intellect, other than the magnificent but necessarily broad Declaration of Independence. JFK, when reasonably sober and taking a break from his non-stop sexual predation, once opined to his dinner guests that this was as intelligent a group as has ever been in this room, except when Thomas Jefferson dined alone. Howard Baker's sell out of our rights to pursue Democrat voter fraud is still haunting America

Jan 22, 2013 12:07 pm | Coach Collins

By Kevin "Coach" Collins

The last presidential election produced a number of documented claims of Democrat voter fraud. A group known as truethevote.org has examined the many allegations and readied a list of voter fraud claims they have found to be credible and genuine.

Across the nation over 25 million invalid voter registrations have not been removed by competent authorities. Each of these questionable registrations presents an opportunity for Democrats to engage in voter fraud.

Among America's registered voters more than 1,800,000 have been proved to be dead. This of course provides more opportunities for fraud by the Party that survives on voter fraud. In Maryland dead people have registered (guess which Party got their check mark) and voted AFTER their death.

Over 2,750,000 people are registered to vote in at least two states.

There is ample proof that twelve Indiana counties have more registered voters than residents. This is also the case in ... Continue Reading:Howard Baker's sell out of our rights to pursue Democrat voter fraud is still haunting America

Unions' Decline Continued in 2012

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 02:34 PM PST

(John Hinderaker)

The numbers are out, and for unions they are grim. The Associated Press reports:

Union membership plummeted last year to the lowest level since the 1930s as cash-strapped state and local governments shed workers and unions had difficulty organizing new members in the private sector despite signs of an improving economy.

Government figures released Wednesday showed union membership declined from 11.8 percent to 11.3 percent of the workforce....

Overall membership fell by about 400,000 workers to 14.4 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More than half the loss, about 234,000, came from government workers including teachers, firefighters and public administrators.

But unions also saw losses in the private sector even as the economy created 1.8 million new jobs in 2012. That membership rate fell from 6.9 percent to 6.6 percent, a troubling sign for the future of organized labor, as job growth generally has taken place at nonunion companies.

Which is not at all coincidental. Unions kill jobs, and eventually the job losses take their toll on union membership. One is left wondering why such a spent movement is able to play a disproportionate role in our political life.

Green Weenie of the Week: The Mob

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 09:30 AM PST

(Steven Hayward)

People often refer to the whole renewable energy sector as a "racket," as it depends on subsidies and mandates to make money.  Hence the essentially corrupt deals cut in Washington to keep the subsidies in place.

Well guess what: it really is a racket.  A police sting in Italy recently revealed heavy Mafia involvement in renewable energy projects.  From yesterday's Washington Post:

PALERMO, Italy - Inside a midnight-blue BMW, a Sicilian entrepreneur delivered his pitch to the accused mafia boss. A new business was blowing into Italy that could spin wind and sunlight into gold, ensuring the future of the Earth as well as the Cosa Nostra: renewable energy.

"Uncle Vincenzo," implored the businessman, Angelo Salvatore, using a term of affection for the alleged head of Sicily's Gimbellina crime family, 79-year-old Vincenzo Funari. According to a transcript of their wiretapped conversation, Salvatore continued, "for the love of our sons, renewable energy is important...it's a business we can live on."...

The still-emerging links of the mafia to the once-booming wind and solar sector here are raising fresh questions about the use of government subsidies to fuel a shift toward cleaner energies, with critics claiming huge state incentives created excessive profits for companies and a market bubble ripe for fraud. . .

"The Cosa Nostra is adapting, acquiring more advanced knowledge in new areas like renewable energy that have become more profitable because of government subsidies," said Teresa Maria Principato, the deputy prosecutor in charge of Palermo's Anti-Mafia Squad, whose headquarters here are emblazoned with the images of assassinated judges. "It is casting a shadow over our renewables industry."

Really, you can't make this stuff up.  So when are going to get wise about our own green energy racketeers?

Obama's Living Declaration

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 04:39 AM PST

(Scott Johnson)

I think it would be a serious mistake to ignore or fail to attend closely to President Obama's second inaugural address. It speaks to his ambition, his assault on the founding principles, and his attempt to realign the electorate on a misreading or misinterpretation or misrepresentation of the meaning of the founding principles. Attention must be paid. See, e.g., Yuval Levin's "Obama's second inaugural."

As R.J. Pestritto has demonstrated, the intellectual roots of modern American liberalism lie in Woodrow Wilson's assault on the ideas of natural rights and limited government. They eventuate in an administrative state and rule by supposed experts. Obamacare represents something like the full flowering of modern liberalism.

Wilson's expressions of disapproval are the precursor to Barack Obama's disdain for the Constitution and the Warren Court. Obama perfectly reflected Wilson's views in his 2001 comments on the civil rights movement and the Supreme Court. In the course of the famous radio interview Obama gave to WBEZ in Chicago, Obama observed that the Warren Court had not broken "free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it's been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties." To achieve "redistributive change," the limitations of the Constitution would have to be overcome by the Court or by Congress.

Franklin Roosevelt touted welfare state liberalism in the "second Bill of Rights" that he set forth to Congress in his 1944 State of the Union Address. "Necessitous men are not free men," Roosevelt asserted, and enumerated a new set of rights, among which were the right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation, the right of every family to a decent home, and the right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health.

Implicitly arguing that the teaching of the Declaration had become obsolete, Roosevelt asserted: "In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed."

Now comes Obama to give us progressivism and welfare state liberalism falsely staked on the principles of the Declaration of Independence. Elsewhere Obama has frankly rejected the concept of "absolute truth" as inconsistent with democracy. In his second inaugural address, however, Obama places the Declaration's "self-evident truths" up front and seems to place his stamp of approval on them, so long as one is not paying too much attention.

In Obama's telling, "the Laws of Nature and Nature's God" have dropped out. Before you know it, devotion to the founding principles serves up the welfare state, the campaign against global warming (evolved into "climate change"), gay marriage, open borders and something to ameliorate long lines to vote. We shall overcome.

While Woodrow Wilson gave us "the living Constitution" - the Constitution unmoored from its ascertainable meaning and constraints - Barack Obama gives us a living Declaration of Independence. Those self-evident truths are an evolving thing. Borrowing from the preamble to the Constitution, Obama rattles off some of the articles of the progressive creed vintage 2013:

We, the people, still believe that every citizen deserves a basic measure of security and dignity. We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit. But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future. (Applause.) For we remember the lessons of our past, when twilight years were spent in poverty and parents of a child with a disability had nowhere to turn.

We do not believe that in this country freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few. We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us at any time may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other through Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us. (Applause.) They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great. (Applause.)

We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity. We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. (Applause.) Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires and crippling drought and more powerful storms.

The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition, we must lead it. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries, we must claim its promise. That's how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure - our forests and waterways, our crop lands and snow-capped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That's what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared....

And so on. Obama later hints at the postmodern nature of his treatment of the issues:

Being true to our founding documents does not require us to agree on every contour of life. It does not mean we all define liberty in exactly the same way or follow the same precise path to happiness. Progress does not compel us to settle centuries-long debates about the role of government for all time, but it does require us to act in our time.

If one takes the right to liberty seriously, it would be important to determine that the required action does not conflict with or undermine it. Obama does not take the founding principles seriously. His devotion to them serves a rhetorical purpose. Almost anticipating Obama's second inaugural address, Charles Kesler has written:

His understanding of the past...pays lip service to such things as self-evident truths, original intent, and first principles but quickly changes the subject to values, visions, dreams, ideals, myths, and narratives. This is a postmodern "move." We can't know or share truth, postmodernists assert, because there is no truth "out there," but we can share stories and thus construct a community of shared meaning. It's these ideas that mark his furthest departure from old-fashioned liberalism.

More and less radical, more and less nihilist-Obama comes in on the "less" side, but then a little bit of nihilism goes a long way. "Implicit...in the very idea of ordered liberty," he writes in The Audacity of Hope, is "a rejection of absolute truth, the infallibility of any idea or ideology or theology or 'ism,' any tyrannical consistency that might lock future generations into a single, unalterable course, or drive both majorities and minorities into the cruelties of the Inquisition, the pogrom, the gulag, or the jihad." There is no absolute truth-and that's the absolute truth, he argues. Such feeble, self-contradictory reasoning is at the heart of Obama's very private and yet very public struggle with himself to determine whether there is anything anywhere that can truly be known, or even that is rational to have faith in. Anyone who believes, really believes, in absolute truth, he asserts, is a fanatic or in imminent danger of becoming a fanatic; absolute truth is the mother of extremism everywhere.

Obama's living Declaration stands in conflict with the real Declaration, the Declaration of our history. We recall that Abraham Lincoln's argument with Stephen Douglas also came down to a disagreement over the meaning of the Declaration of Independence. Lincoln articulated this disagreement with special gusto in his critique of Douglas on July 10, 1858.

According to Douglas, the teaching of the Declaration had no general applicability beyond the immediate situation that confronted the Founding Fathers. Restating Douglas's argument, Lincoln asked "in all soberness, if all these things, if indulged in, if ratified, if confirmed and endorsed, if taught to our children, and repeated to them, do not tend to rub out the sentiment of liberty in the country, and to transform this Government into a government of some other form." This is certainly one of the questions that is raised in acute form by the doctrine of welfare state liberalism.

The economic "rights" asserted by Roosevelt in his second Bill of Rights and by Obama in his appropriation of the principles of the Declaration differ and conflict with the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness asserted in the Declaration. They are claims on the liberty of others. If I have a right to medical care, you must have a corresponding duty to supply it. If I have a right to a decent home, you must have a duty to provide it.

The argument for the welfare state belongs in the same family as "the arguments that kings have made for enslaving the people in all ages of the world. You will find that all the arguments in favor of king-craft were of this class; they always bestrode the necks of the people, not that they wanted to do it, but because the people were better off for being ridden." That's Lincoln again.

Lincoln memorably derided the underlying principle as "the same old serpent that says you work and I eat, you toil and I will enjoy the fruits of it." It is also the principle that underlies Obama's living Declaration.

The American Mind with Bill Bennett

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 03:22 AM PST

(Scott Johnson)

The Claremont Institute's American Mind series with host Charles Kesler kicks off in earnest with an interview of Bill Bennett. The American Mind seeks to deliver the insights, ideas, and perspectives of our brightest conservative thinkers, writers and political philosophers, in a monthly series of intimate conversations hosted by Professor Kesler, editor of The Claremont Review of Books.

We previewed the interview last week with its first segment. The interview was recorded during the GOP presidential primaries and may sound slightly dated in that segment. The interview then proceeds to cover a range of still timely topics including manliness, the importance of heroes in America, President Obama, the Republican Party and Ronald Reagan. By arrangement with the Claremont Institute we are pleased to present the interview in its entirety (just over 40 minutes). Please check it out.

It's Time to Balance the Budget

Today, the House will vote on a proposal that would suspend the debt ceiling until May 19, buying a bit more time for the overarching budget debate. This puts off the difficult decisions that are needed to get the country's fiscal situation in order. Heritage's vice president for domestic and economic policy, Derrick Morgan, wrote recently:

Benjamin Franklin once said, "Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today." That's why Congress should not raise the debt ceiling unless it includes immediate reforms today that put us on a sure path to balance, keep us in balance over time, provide for the common defense-and do not raise taxes.

Yesterday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) took up an idea promoted by a coalition of conservative organizations including our sister organization, Heritage Action for America.

They pledged to produce a path to balance-a balanced budget in 10 years.

In a Politico op-ed January 15, Heritage Action for America CEO Michael Needham joined Family Research Council President Tony Perkins and Club for Growth President Chris Chocola in leading the call for Congress to balance the budget-and use the debt ceiling negotiations to do it.

"While we as fiscal, social and foreign policy conservatives have differing priorities, we can certainly find immediate savings in the discretionary budget," they wrote. "Programs that benefit only a few-agriculture subsidies, green energy handouts, Planned Parenthood, etc.-have at least the appearance of cronyism and special interest handouts."

The conservative leaders called for a plan that would balance the budget in 10 years, explaining:

Ten years is not a random horizon, but the traditional congressional budget window. Nor is this demand the result of mere whimsy-it is a moral obligation. No American should have to tell an 8-year-old child that we cannot get our nation's house in order by the time she goes to college. There are many ways to get to a balanced budget and both Democrats and Republicans have an obligation to explain what path they will choose.

Following their call, 41 leaders of conservative organizations signed a memo urging Congress to produce a 10-year path to balance. Now, Boehner has taken up that call.

Of course, before you can have a balanced budget, you have to have a budget. Boehner and his Republican colleagues in the House have also put the Senate on notice: It's time to produce a budget.

The Senate has failed to pass a budget for the past three years. The bill the House will vote on today includes a provision that would withhold pay for Members from either chamber if it fails to pass a budget.

It's good to hear Members of Congress getting serious about financial responsibility. After the fiscal cliff deal, however, any "deal" cannot just promise budget reforms will happen in the future-it must include those reforms. As Heritage's Emily Goff said yesterday:

[C]onservatives should not capitulate again on tax hikes. In the imminent debt limit debate, they should remind the country that we have a spending problem and communicate concrete ways to reduce federal spending. They can start with bipartisan reforms to Medicare and Social Security and thus lay the groundwork for bolder entitlement program reforms in the future.

Now let's see these plans for a balanced budget-because the details are important. The needed spending cuts and entitlement reforms will have to become concrete realities.

Response to Newtown: Addressing a Complex Issue

Americans of all political and philosophical convictions have grieved over the killing of innocent schoolchildren and adults in Newtown, Connecticut. In responding to this attack, we must consider with great care how to proceed to protect precious lives in a way that is consistent with our laws and traditions.

"The serious work to make society safer and stronger after events like the December 2012 Newtown massacre requires that constitutional and complex cultural factors be taken into consideration and that policy be based on a serious study of all of the evidence," write two Heritage experts in a new Backgrounder.

John Malcolm, a senior legal fellow in the Center for Legal & Judicial Studies, and Jennifer Marshall, director of domestic policy studies and director of the Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society, raise issues to guide that serious study, with key principles regarding the following:

  • The constitutional importance of the Second Amendment and evidence on the effectiveness of gun laws
  • School safety
  • Risks of violence related to serious mental illness
  • The significance of cultural factors and the roles of families and communities
  • Media production, consumption, and the First Amendment

Malcolm and Marshall remind us that "The constitutional right to keep and bear arms is an individual right that is fundamental to a free society, which depends, ultimately, on personal responsibility." They write:

Americans must implement appropriate solutions in a manner that is consistent with the Constitution, including the Second Amendment guarantee of the right to keep and bear arms, the traditional role of the states in our federal system, and the central significance of family.

The CFPB in Action Harms More Than It Protects

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was created in 2010 by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and imbued with unparalleled powers over virtually every consumer financial product and service. With rulemaking and enforcement now underway, there is ample evidence that agency operations represent a radical departure from long-standing regulatory standards. The CFPB's actions are constricting the availability of financial products and services and raising costs-all of which will undermine business investment and consumer credit. Immediate reforms are necessary to impose accountability on the bureau. Ultimately, the CFPB should be eliminated and replaced by coordinated oversight of various enforcement functions among other financial regulators.

A Note to President Hollande: Investors say "Oui" to Economic Freedom

French President Francois Hollande and his marketing gurus are on the offensive with their "Say Oui to France" campaign, meant to convince investors that the French economy is worthy of their money. According to Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg, these attributes make France "extremely competitive, better than Japan, Australia, the US and Italy."

DeMint and Feulner Launch Nationwide Tour to Meet Heritage Members

by Nathaniel Ward

Heritage President-Elect Jim DeMint speaks to hundreds of Heritage members in New York Tuesday. Photo: Shealah Craighead

Conservatives need to better articulate their message if they are to prevail in the war of ideas, Heritage President-Elect Jim DeMint told hundreds of Heritage Foundation members and supporters Tuesday in New York.

Speaking without notes, DeMint elaborated on a point he made earlier this month in the Washington Post. "Conservative policies have proved their worth time and time again," he wrote in the post. "If we're not communicating in a way that makes that clear, we are doing a disservice to our fellow citizens."

The audience was very receptive to his message. "What this country needs is leadership, a real leader like George Washington," a member of the audience said near the end of the event. Pointing at DeMint, he added: "And I think we have found him."

DeMint joined Heritage President Ed Feulner in New York on Tuesday for the first stop of a nationwide tour. The Presidents' Tour aims to introduce DeMint to Heritage members and outline a conservative agenda for 2013 and beyond.

Feulner and DeMint also visited Chicago Tuesday and stopped today in Denver. They will make stops in San Francisco and Los Angeles later this week to appear at sold-out events. Next month, they will visit Dallas, Atlanta, Palm Beach and Naples, Fla., before returning to Washington for a final event.

At the end of each event, DeMint will take questions from Heritage members. What would you like to ask him? Tell us in the comments.

The Heritage Foundation's Amy Payne explains President Obama's second inaugural address in plain English:

The President was very clear that he sees no urgency about reducing the debt and cutting the deficit. In fact, in his second inaugural address, President Barack Obama was honest about his intentions to grow government in order to remake our country along his progressive vision.

To sell his agenda, the President borrowed imagery and terminology from America's first principles. But he twisted the American founding idea of "We the people" into the liberal "It takes a village."

You can read Payne's full analysis here.

What did you think about President Obama's second inaugural address?

Obama 'Cements His Legacy'
By L. Brent Bozell III
On Monday, President Barack Obama delivered a monumental address to the nation -- monumental because it signaled for the first time just how grand Obama's ambitions for the left are. No longer is the left content to wage a war against Constitutional principles on behalf of a Marxist philosophical system. Now they will attempt to convince the American people that Constitutional principles dictate Marxism.
