Did Obama Steal the Election With Hagel's Help?
Chuck Hagel has been tapped by Obama for Secretary of Defense, which has resulted in a slew of push backs over his troubling record: criticism and lack of support for Israel; coddling of Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran; and his almost immediate appointment after retiring as a senator to Deutsche Bank's Americas Advisory Board, the mega bank that has been accused of funneling billions of dollars to Iran's nuclear program.
But the most troubling aspect of Chuck Hagel is the fact that he may have stolen both of his senatorial elections.
In 1992, Hagel was CEO of Election Systems & Software, maker of computerized voting machines.
On March 15, 1995, Hagel resigned as CEO but kept millions in stock options and declared that he was going to run for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska. Although he was a virtually unknown candidate; although he ran against a former governor, Ben Nelson, who was hugely popular; and although all the polls prior to the election indicated Ben Nelson would win the election, oddly Hagel won by a landslide with 83% of the vote.
It later turned out that Hagel's voting machines had been used in virtually all of the precincts.
When Hagel ran for reelection in 2006, his previous landslide of 83% was eclipsed by an even wider margin.
As Algerian army helicopters clattered overhead deep in the Sahara desert, Islamist militants hunkered down for the night in a natural gas complex they had assaulted Wednesday morning, killing two people and taking dozens of foreigners hostage in what could be the first spillover from France's intervention in Mali.
The Algerian army has surrounded the complex and about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from the coast, there is no obvious way for the kidnappers to escape in their four wheel drive vehicles with their hostages.
A militant group claimed responsibility for the rare attack on one of oil-rich Algeria's energy facilities, saying it came in revenge for the North African nation's support for France's military operation against al-Qaida-linked rebels in neighboring Mali. The militants said they were holding 41 foreigners from the energy complex, including seven Americans.
The group - called Katibat Moulathamine or the Masked Brigade - phoned a Mauritanian news outlet to say one of its affiliates had carried out the operation at the Ain Amenas gas field, located 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) south of Algiers, the Algerian capital, and that France must cease its intervention in Mali to ensure the safety of the hostages.
BP, together with the Norwegian company Statoil and the Algerian state oil company Sonatrach, operates the gas field. A Japanese company, JGC Corp, provides services for the facility as well.
In Rome, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta declared that the U.S. "will take all necessary and proper steps" to deal with the attack in Algeria. He would not detail what such steps might be but condemned the action as "terrorist attack" and likened it to al-Qaida activities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

You may know that the wonderful founder of the DC March for Life, Nellie Gray died at the age of 86 this past August. She had led the March for Life for 40 years. She is being succeeded by a board member, Jeanne Monahan. This March also marks the 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.
The purpose of the e-mail is to advise you that our Federal Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick again will meet with the participants in this event who are from Dtistrict 8. Because of the crowd and the number of congressmen who tried to accommodate us in DC last year, he would like to have a separate room for Bucks County District 8. This should enable better organization. I know some of the churches who are going to the March but probably not all. Therefore you may get another e-mail as well.
If you are planning to go to the March and would like to meet with Rep. Fitzpatrick, please respond to this e-mail to advise and possibly your number. He is making himself available between 2 & 5 PM on the day of the March 1/25/13. I do not know the place yet.
Another reason for the e-mail is if you have a particular concern or question, and these should be directed toward pro-life, you may want to formulate that beforehand to help him in helping you. There are many pro-life bills that have been introduced but they will have to be re-introduced

600 Memorials for 55 Million Babies
Next Tuesday, January 22, 2013, the 40th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court ruling which legalized abortion on demand, pro-life advocates across America are being urged to memorialize the 55 million pre-born babies who have been aborted since that ruling 40 years ago on that date.
When people want to express their sorrow for tragic deaths, they often bring symbols of their grief to the sitesof the deaths, including candles, flowers and messages. When children are killed, those symbols often include stuffed animals and balloons, such as for the recent school massacre in Newtown. Pro-lifers can help commemorate the 55 million pre-born babies who were aborted before they could even take a breath.
RNC for Life is urging those who value the sanctity of life to remember those innocent babes by placing flowers, balloons and stuffed animals at the approximately 600 abortion facilities across America next Tuesday. We also encourage you to pray silently in front of the abortion facility after placing your memorial.
You don't have to spend much time at the abortuary and you don't have to spend much money on the symbols you place there. But these memorials - hopefully 600+ of them - will send a message to all who see them: Some of the 55 million innocents were killed HERE and we grieve for them.
We hope that these spontaneous memorials will be placed at every abortuary, accompanied by sweet reminders of unborn children and even messages to those innocent babies. We are confident that, in seeing these hundreds of memorials with thousands of participants, America will come to realize the magnitude of the horror that abortion is and has been for four decades. Please forward this to everyone you know who believes in the sanctity of Life. We must not let this infamous anniversary go by without memorializing these babes who have been murdered in the womb at the rate of about 3300 EVERY DAY!

"FrackNation," a film by investigative journalist Phelim McAleer, will be broadcast on Jan. 22, 2012 at 9 p.m. ET according to The Hollywood Reporter. AXS TV is a cable network owned by Mark Cuban, Ryan Seacrest and entertainment companies AEG and CAA.
In a press release, McAleer said of the film, "FrackNation has been described as the first 'pro-fracking film.' I would describe it as pro-journalism and pro-truth. It asks hard questions of the environmental movement and its campaigns. And they seem to not like difficult questions."
In the film, McAleer travels across the U.S. and interviews people on both sides of the fracking issue, including farmers who have leased their property for natural gas drilling and say it is safe, as well as others who want to lease their lands, but cannot due to bans on the practice. He also scrutinizes claims made by Josh Fox, the anti-fracking filmmaker of Gasland.
The new documentary film was funded through Kickstarter, a crowdfunding website, and was co-directed by McAleer, his wife Ann McElhinney and their colleague Magdalena Segieda. "FrackNation's" debut will come just a couple weeks after the anti-fracking drama "Promised Land" starring Matt Damon and John Krasinski hits movie theaters nationwide.
The timing is intentional and meant to urge debate following "Promised Land's" release, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cuban said "Of course the timing is relevant."
"Promised Land" will merely be the newest entertainment media attempt to demonize the practice of fracking, following episodes of TV programs like "Rizzoli & Isles." The U.S. news media, when they talk about fracking also often portray it negatively. The New York Times ran an entire series of misleading reports in 2011 about fracking and continued to attack the process, even after the paper's ombudsman criticized the Times' coverage.
McAleer has made two previous documentaries, Not Evil Just Wrong and Mine Your Own Business.

The recent tragedy in Newtown, CT has shocked our country. Unfortunately, the media and liberal politicians are using this evil act to demonize the 2nd Amendment and law-abiding citizens. Draconian gun control is being called for to exploit this tragedy. THE THREATS
Vice President Biden's task force released recommendations that calls for many semi-automatic rifles and 30 round magazines to be banned.
Sen. Feinstein (D-CA) is introducing legislation that will affect up to 75% of all lawfully owned guns and 100% of all law-abiding gun owners. This bill could require amongst other things:
current gun owners to register themselves as if pre-criminals
registration of firearms and creation of federal tracking database
force owners to pay an annual tax in order to keep their guns.
ban the production and/or sale of many firearms and magazines
require that firearms be surrendered to the government upon the owner's death and not be able to be transferred to living relatives, etc.
Mr. Obama has publicly stated that he will use Executive Orders to implement gun control if Congress should resist implementing severe gun control measures. This is an unconstitutional usurpation of authority and all about CONTROL.
History has demonstrated repeatedly - Gun registration is precursor to gun confiscation!!
A CALL TO ACTION
This meeting will bring together concerned, law-abiding gun owners to discuss:

Further, President Obama is threatening to circumvent Congress and use Executive Orders to pass legislation!!!

According to the FBI in areas where right to carry have been implemented gun crimes have been reduced and the converse is also a fact. A prime example of the decrease after the right to carry is Florida, Texas and Michigan; After the handgun ban Chicago saw an increase in handgun murders and DC saw an increase in murder rate after the handgun ban.
Dr. Gary Kleck, a criminologist at Florida State University, estimated that approximately 2.5 million people used their gun in self-defense or to prevent crime each year, often by merely displaying a weapon. The incidents that Kleck studied generally did not involve the firing of the gun and he estimates that as many as 1.9 million of those instances involved a handgun. The National Rifle Association regularly reprints locally-published stories of ordinary citizens whose lives were saved by their guns.
In the international scene, the homicide rate in England and Wales has averaged 52% higher since the outset of the 1968 gun control law and 15% higher since the outset of the 1997 handgun ban. In Australia, five years after the gun ban assault rose 49.2 percent, robbery rose 6.2 percent rape increased 29.9 percent and overall Australia's violent crime rose 42.2 percent. At the same time, U.S. violent crime decreased 31.8 percent: rape dropped 19.2 percent; robbery decreased 33.2 percent; aggravated assault dropped 32.2 percent.
Schools(like the Friend's school where President Obama's children attend, in addition to the Secret Service), celebrities, politicians and other wealthy are protected by armed guards and are not attacked. Essentially the one percenters are the ones who can afford this protection.
In Israel, teachers are armed and there are no school shootings.

Attached is a draft resolution that I put together. I plan to use it with civic groups to help get them on board and supporting workers' rights in PA
The "Pennsylvania Open Workforce Initiative" is a compilation of five pieces of legislation that would end compulsory unionism in Pennsylvania. They are:
House Bill 50 : umbrella right to work bill (would pertain to both public and private sector unions)
House Bill 51 : eliminates fair share fees for school employees
House Bill 52 : eliminates fair share fees for state government employees
House Bill 53 : eliminates fair share fees for local government employees
House Bill 54 : right to work solely for the private sector (similar to what Indiana recently passed)
What about additional policy changes that would restore the freedom to Pennsylvania workers, including eliminating a public employer's responsibility to collect union dues (Rep. Cutler's HB 1418 from last session). Hopefully, that will come from the Senate.
Pennsylvania Open Workforce Initiative Resolution
Whereas Pennsylvania is in the bottom one-third of states for business attractiveness;
Whereas Pennsylvania law grants government unions unfair, unique, and special privilege to use government payroll and administrative systems to automatically deduct dues, "fair share" fees, and even Political Action Committee contributions from workers' paychecks-money they earn, but never see
Whereas automatic deduction-at taxpayers' expense-helps bankroll six-figure salaries for union bosses, political lobbying, and expensive conferences and junkets while employees have little or no say in how unions use their money;
Whereas Pennsylvania is a forced union state where workers in unionized workplaces must pay "fair share" fees to the union as a condition of their employment;
Whereas a single union usually has monopoly bargaining power with a government unit-such as a school district-which prevents employees from choosing a different union or from bargaining individually;
Whereas workers' freedom of association is being violated by current law when half of Pennsylvania's government employees are unionized-amounting to nearly 300,000 voluntary members and involuntary fee payers in the four largest government unions: the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), the American Federation of State, Council and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU);
Whereas Pennsylvania's workers lack the protection to work without being forced against their will to pay dues or fees to a union or similar organization;
Whereas government unions often lobby for policies that work against the best interest of their members, taxpayers, students and service users; and
Whereas last year, the PSEA spent $4.2 million on lobbying and political activity, an increase of about 60% from the prior year;
It is resolved that, it is time to protect the rights of workers, taxpayers, students, and the public by passing "Pennsylvania Open Workforce Initiative" legislation that will
(1)Prohibit the use of taxpayer resources to collect union dues, fees, and Political Action Committee contributions;
(2)Require unions to receive permission from union members before using dues or fees for non-collective bargaining, political activity;
(3)Protect the workers' right to freedom of association by establishing and protecting a workers' freedom to work without being forced to join an union;
(4)Repeal laws that compel government workers to pay fees to a union as a condition of employment; and
(5)Relieve unions of having to represent any non-dues or non-fee paying employees.

AAA warns E15 gasoline could cause car damage

E15, a higher blend of ethanol and gasoline, has rolled out in a handful of states. But its use in older vehicles is generating warnings from AAA, which says E15 could be harmful to pre-2012 vehicles.
The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties.
AAA, which issued its warning Friday, says just 12 million of more than 240 million cars, trucks and SUVs now in use have manufacturers' approval for E15. Flex-fuel vehicles, 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles, 2013 Fords and 2001 and later model Porsches are the exceptions, according to AAA, the nation's largest motorist group, with 53.5 million members.
"It is clear that millions of Americans are unfamiliar with E15, which means there is a strong possibility that many may improperly fill up using this gasoline and damage their vehicle," AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet tells USA TODAY. "Bringing E15 to the market without adequate safeguards does not responsibly meet the needs of consumers."
On Monday, President Barack Obama nominated former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel to be his next Secretary of Defense in succession to Leon Panetta. Chuck Hagel's record is one of being a frightening and dangerous apologist for terrorist groups like Hamas and Hizballah, as well as for the Iranian terrorist regime, while being arguably one of the most vicious and hostile critics of Israel. In 2009, Hagel signed a letter urging President Obama to begin direct negotiations with Hamas, a U.S. designated terrorist group committed in its Charter to the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews, a position President Obama has not taken up.
In a 2006 interview with former Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller, Hagel said that "the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people" on Capitol Hill ('Hagel named to intelligence board,' Jewish Telegraphic Agency, October 29, 2009).

December 2005: Hagel was one of only 27 senators who refused to sign a letter to President Bush urging him to pressure the Palestinian Authority (PA) to ban terrorist groups from participating in Palestinian legislative elections.

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet,The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

The destruction of the black family in only 40 years is not normal and it should not treated as entertainment for vulnerable children and young women. The consequences of living without responsibility perpetuates poverty and it's cruel.

On Eve of Obama's Second Inauguration, Al Qaeda Opens New Front
The killing of Osama bin Laden was touted as the beginning of the end of Al Qaeda (the term "war on terror" having long since been abandoned). Yet as the nation's capital prepares for President Barack Obama's second inauguration, Al Qaeda is opening new fronts, including ground assaults on French forces in Mali and, today, the kidnapping of foreign workers at a natural gas facility in Algeria, which borders Mali to the north.
French troops are preparing to fight Islamist guerillas in northern Mali, which has been turned into a virtual Al Qaeda state following the collapse of the Gaddafi regime in Libya. In what has been described as a failure of U.S. strategy and intelligence, former Libyan soldiers united with terror groups and American-trained defectors from the Malian army to stage a coup and to begin imposing sharia law on the residents of the area.
Gone was the beach, the eight-mile boardwalk, the four-lane roadway, the sidewalks, the lawns, the entire first floors and basement storage units of the condos, as well as every boiler and electrical grid.

In that same period, Syria's Assad went from the pages of Vogue and meetings with John Kerry to being the most reviled man in the world. But two years from now, if he survives the worst that the Syrian rebels, most of whom are Al Qaeda or wish they were, you might well find him meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry while his family gets another four pages in Vogue Magazine.
In two years, the evil ruthless dictators who kill and torture their own people have been replaced by ruthless democratically elected dictators who kill and torture their own people. Everyone is waiting for Barack Obama to unload his gun-control proposals today. Now, a progressive group with enormous influence on the White House has just released an 11-page proposal reviewed by WND. Here are the specifics of what you can expect from you-know-who.
With 23 executive actions to control guns, President Obama is seeking "revenge," intentionally pushing people to snap, says this American media giant.
And with the call to beef up background checks, this famous personality is suggesting a full background check for Obama himself, since the clowns in the mainstream news business have never thoroughly vetted him.
In response to the tragic Sandy Hook shootings last month, President Obama today unveiled a series of proposals aimed at limiting Second Amendment rights. Some, like expanded background checks, enjoy broad support in most polls. Others, like banning certain guns, are more controversial. The public generally wants the laws already on the books to be enforced, not more laws passed.
When it comes to the use of executive orders, Obama appears to be cautious -- for now. Obama announced that he was acting on 23 proposals recommended by Vice President Biden's task force. Politico reports that Obama's executive orders will likely focus on "anti-bullying measures and additional training for school counselors and mental health professionals." Obama is also ordering the Centers for Disease Control to study ways to prevent gun violence.
While some of these measures are limited in scope, it is infuriating that Obama's default position is to end-run Congress at every opportunity. In reaction to President Obama's executive orders, Senator Marco Rubio said, "President Obama is again abusing his power by imposing his policies via executive fiat instead of allowing them to be debated in Congress."
I was struck by the president's repeated references during his announcement to statistics involving handguns. Obama remarked that 900 people have been killed since Sandy Hook. But virtually all of those deaths were from handguns. He lamented the children who are too frequently denied their "right to life" in Chicago neighborhoods. (He said nothing about the million-plus children in the womb who every year are denied their right to life.)
At the very least, the president was engaging in demagoguery. He was using statistics that have virtually nothing to do with so-called "assault weapons" to justify his proposals that will make it harder for hunters, sportsmen, collectors and other law-abiding citizens to protect themselves.
The thugs and gang members running Chicago's streets are by definition not law-abiding citizens, and probably won't be affected in any way by anything Obama proposed today. If they aren't obeying current laws, they won't obey new ones!
What was most glaringly absent from the president's remarks was any discussion about cultural influences that may be contributing to the disturbing degree of random violence today. He won't engage in that debate because the culture that gave birth to Obama has undermined faith, family and individual responsibility. The left has relentlessly attacked the sanctity of life, the belief that we are all children of God, and that we will one day be judged by God.
Liberalism vs. Reality
What ultimately matters in this debate is that we preserve the right in this country for law-abiding Americans to own firearms. The Second Amendment is not about hunting. Our Founding Fathers had firsthand experience with a tyrannical government. If you would like a quick refresher on the Second Amendment, I recommend this column by Dr. Walter Williams.
The push for more gun control, like so much of the left-wing agenda, contradicts reality. If you are inclined to debate someone, keep these statistics in mind:
Banning guns may not work. As Jeffrey Scott Shapiro, a former prosecutor in Washington, D.C., writes in the Wall Street Journal:
"The D.C. gun ban, enacted in 1976, prohibited anyone other than law-enforcement officers from carrying a firearm in the city. Residents were even barred from keeping guns in their homes for self-defense. ... Violent crime increased after the law was enacted, with homicides rising to 369 in 1988, from 188 in 1976 when the ban started. By 1993, annual homicides had reached 454. ... Since the gun ban was struck down, murders in the District have steadily gone down, from 186 in 2008 to 88 in 2012, the lowest number since the law was enacted in 1976."
In recent years, gun ownership has surged, as has the number of states with right-to-carry laws. Liberals warned that we would return to the Wild West days of gun slingers having shootouts on every street. It did not happen. In fact, crime rates have gone down.
While assault weapons make headlines, FBI statistics tell us that more people are killed by clubs and hammers.
There isn't significant public demand for gun control. A recent Gallup poll asked respondents to identify the "most important problem" facing the country. Only 4% said "gun control." The issue tied for sixth place behind the economy, the federal budget deficit, dissatisfaction with government, unemployment and lack of money.
Left-wing Hypocrisy
I couldn't leave this topic without a few words about left-wing hypocrisy. After the Sandy Hook shootings, the NRA suggested that we should consider putting armed guards in schools to protect our children just as we protect our money, our presidents and other things we consider valuable.
Our political and media elites mocked the idea. But the public supports it, and school districts across the country are doing it.
The NRA isn't backing down. It has produced an ad calling Obama an "elite hypocrite" for sending his daughters to a school with armed guards. In fact many of Washington's elites send their children to private schools that have armed security guards. The White House and the left-wing pundits exploded with rage. "How dare the NRA drag Obama's daughters into this debate." Obama's White House spokesman denounced the ad as "repugnant and cowardly."
But dragging children into the debate is exactly what Obama did at his press conference today. He used children as rhetorical shields to advance his agenda. The implication was clear -- anyone who opposes his efforts to restrict our Second Amendment freedoms must want more kids to die. Obama constantly calls for dialogue, but he always demonizes his opposition.
The left is also howling about a target practice app recently released by the NRA. MSNBC's faux conservative Joe Scarborough went on a tirade about the app on his show this week. Contrast the left's screeching about the NRA's target practice app to its silence about an online game that allows players to shoot NRA President David Keene in the head.
Conservatives are not supposed to fight back, and liberals just can't stand it when they are confronted by their own hypocrisy.

Texas threatens feds with arrest over guns
A Texas lawmaker says he plans to file the Firearms Protection Act, which would make any federal laws that may be passed by Congress or imposed by Presidential order which would ban or restrict ownership of semi-automatic firearms or limit the size of gun magazines illegal in the state, 1200 WOAI news reports.
Republican Rep. Steve Toth says his measure also calls for felony criminal charges to be filed against any federal official who tries to enforce the rule in the state.
"If a federal official comes into the state of Texas to enforce the federal executive order, that person is subject to criminal prosecution," Toth told 1200 WOAI's Joe Pags Tuesday. He says his bill would make attempting to enforce a federal gun ban in Texas punishable by a $50,000 fine and up to five years in prison.
Kathryn Lopez has an excellent interview with Professor Kesler posted at NRO. I recommend the whole thing, but wanted to bring these thoughts especially to your attention:
Obama thinks he has saved liberalism because he's put it on the winning side again, and in a big way. He takes pride in showing that the era of big government is not over, that in fact the future belongs to much higher taxes and to much more activist government. I think he's profoundly wrong about that. Before suggesting why, may I say something briefly about how differently conservatives think, or ought to think, about the relation between principles and politics?
For us, to put it simply, principles are rooted in what our fathers called the laws of nature and of nature's God. These are timeless, that is, they call to us in every age. Some ages live up to the minimal demands of moral decency and the maximum demands of political excellence better than others; no age lives up to them perfectly. That's why conservatives are inherently moderate in their demands and expectations of politics, recognizing that neither political defeat nor victory affects the inherent authority and goodness of first principles. Our losses in 2012 are therefore not cause for despair. Like everything in politics they are temporary. We shouldn't run around like liberals, afraid that the times are against us and that we need to exchange old principles for new ones that allegedly fit the times better. Our calling is, so far as possible, to keep the times in tune with our principles, not to adjust our principles to match the times. As Churchill put it, it isn't possible to guarantee success in politics or war; it's possible only to deserve it. By contrast, progressives believe in happy endings, in the inevitability of progress. They cannot separate might from right, success from legitimacy, and so don't have the consolation of believing in principles in the conservative sense. They insist that the good guys must always or at least eventually win, a standard which elides easily into the deeply immoral belief that, in the end, whoever wins must be right.
In the annals of context offered allegedly to explain controversial or offensive remarks, this may take the cake:
A congressional delegation led by McCain met with Mohammed Morsi a day after the White House strongly denounced his remarks as "deeply offensive." Morsi made the comments in a 2010 speech, as a leader in the Muslim Brotherhood before he became president, but they resurfaced recently when aired on an Egyptian TV show.
In the video, Morsi refers to "Zionists" as "bloodsuckers who attack Palestinians" as well as "the descendants of apes and pigs." He also called U.S. President Barack Obama a liar.
Presidential spokesman Yasser Ali said Morsi told the delegation Wednesday that the remarks were taken out of context, aimed at criticizing Israeli policies, and not Jews. Morsi told them distinction must be made between criticism of what he called the "racist" policies of the Israelis against the Palestinians and insults against the Jewish faith.
Morsi told them the remarks were part of a speech against Israeli aggression in Gaza and "assured them of his respect for monotheistic religions, freedom of belief and the practice of religions."
They must think we're really, really stupid, a belief I am sure they come by honestly. For those who would like a quick refresher, let's go to the tape, courtesy of the invaluable MEMRI and the related background here.
The other day I took note of the fact that, as I have long predicted, the media is losing interest in climate change in large part because the climate campaign long ago became an unimaginative crashing bore. Moreover, as also long expected, we're starting to see the "counter-intuitive" narrative start to appear-namely, that moderate warming might have net benefits. (Actually the IPCC reports have implied this all along, but the notorious Summary for Policy Makers, which is all most journalists and politicians ever bothered to read, always leaves this out or obscures it.)
And so here's another one. Remember how the polar bear became the charismatic megafauna of the threat of global warming (even though there are credible claims that polar bear numbers have increased in recent decades)? Well, there a new article in the scientific journal PlosOne that concludes most arctic species will benefit from global warming. Here's the abstract:
Arctic and subarctic (i.e., [sub]arctic) ecosystems are predicted to be particularly susceptible to climate change. The area of tundra is expected to decrease and temperate climates will extend further north, affecting species inhabiting northern environments. Consequently, species at high latitudes should be especially susceptible to climate change, likely experiencing significant range contractions. Contrary to these expectations, our modelling of species distributions suggests that predicted climate change up to 2080 will favour most mammals presently inhabiting (sub)arctic Europe. Assuming full dispersal ability, most species will benefit from climate change, except for a few cold-climate specialists. However, most resident species will contract their ranges if they are not able to track their climatic niches, but no species is predicted to go extinct. If climate would change far beyond current predictions, however, species might disappear. The reason for the relative stability of mammalian presence might be that arctic regions have experienced large climatic shifts in the past, filtering out sensitive and range-restricted taxa. We also provide evidence that for most (sub)arctic mammals it is not climate change per se that will threaten them, but possible constraints on their dispersal ability and changes in community composition. Such impacts of future changes in species communities should receive more attention in literature. (Underline added.)
To me the most important part of this article is the late underlined bit, which makes the point I've been trying to make for a long time-the main driver of species contraction is not climate but changes in habitat and/or habitat fragmentation. But to climate fanatics, everything gets reduced to climate.
The Claremont Institute's American Mind series with host Charles Kesler kicks off in earnest this week with an interview of Bill Bennett. The American Mind seeks to deliver the insights, ideas, and perspectives of our brightest conservative thinkers, writers and political philosophers, in a monthly series of intimate conversations hosted by Charles Kesler, editor of The Claremont Review of Books.
The Bennett interview was recorded during the GOP presidential primaries, so it may sound dated. The subject under discussion remains of interest however: Could Ronald Reagan have emerged from the 2012 primary process? (I certainly have my doubts.) By arrangement with the Claremont Institute we will post the entire interview next Wednesday, on January 23. In the meantime, here is part 1.
Do retirees take vacations or do we just take trips? If the former, what are we taking a vacation from?
I'm taking a trip to Hawaii, and it will serve as something of a vacation from blogging. I will probably contribute a few posts , but not many.
My trip will also be a "vacation" from the inauguration. I am vacating the Washington, D.C. area for the purpose, among others, of missing that event.

Immigration Pushes Welfare Spending Over $1 Trillion
More than a quarter of the $1 trillion spent on welfare in the United States goes directly to the households of immigrants. And two out of three jobs created in the last four years went to immigrants. Those are jobs that would lift Americans out of poverty, and reduce welfare spending still more. Instead, just last month, the unemployment rate among black Americans rose to 14 percent.
The problem isn't only illegal immigration: Most legal immigrants use at least one welfare program. The problem is simply too much immigration. In fact, while many illegal immigrants have gone home since the start of the recession, the number of legal immigrants in America continues to explode.
Some immigration makes sense. But such massive levels of immigration are keeping Americans trapped in poverty. And they're exploding the federal deficit, not to mention busting Pennsylvania's own budget! Help Senators Toomey and Casey get the message by sending the free fax below. Tell them to stop importing poverty.
Dear (separate faxes addressed to Sens. Toomey and Casey),
America spends more than a trillion dollars on programs to help our own unemployed and disadvantaged. So why are we importing millions of immigrants to compete for jobs and resources with them?
Congress should help unemployed and disadvantaged Americans get decent-paying work, not import millions of new workers to take entry-level jobs. The U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, chaired by civil rights activist Barbara Jordan, called for cutting annual legal immigration in half. This would still be double the historical average, and allow for plenty of reasonable immigration. The primary reason for the cutting immigration that the commission cited was that every time immigration levels have been high -- and they are higher in the past decade than every -- wages fell and poverty rose. With so many millions of unemployed Americans and the nation in such dire fiscal crises, the commission's findings are even more important now than ever.
As Congress considers many "immigration reform" proposals, keep in mind that the reforms we need are those that result in more job openings, less poverty, and lower spending.
More stringent regulation of mortgage lending constitutes a sizable chunk of the vast Dodd-Frank statute. As required, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on Thursday released more than 800 pages of rules that will largely determine the availability and cost of mortgages. Neither consumers nor creditors emerge as winners.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the major housing government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs), hold dominant positions in the U.S. mortgage market. They have likely passed a mortgage interest rate subsidy of 25-50 basis points to homebuyers through their interventions in the housing market, especially by easing loans to those who could not afford to buy a house. Therefore, any policy reform that eliminates Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from the U.S. mortgage market, all else equal, would have the likely effect of eliminating this interest rate subsidy on mortgages.
The Dodd-Frank financial regulation statute requires nearly 400 rulemakings. As of January 2, some 60 percent of the rulemaking deadlines were missed, and a full third of the required regulations have not been proposed. The delays may defer some compliance expenses. However, regulatory uncertainty also imposes costs on businesses as well as consumers, as the saga of the "remittance" rules illustrates.

All across America, families are balancing their budgets and even paying off debt. Since the financial panic of 2008, personal debt has fallen as Americans tighten their belts and pay back loans. Some, unfortunately, had to declare bankruptcy because their debts got too big. Washington cannot declare bankruptcy; it must instead follow the example of millions of Americans and cut spending to live within its means.
Most state governments, likewise, have managed to balance their budgets, even during these hard times. A few states, notably California and Illinois, continue to follow the federal government's profligate example. A few raised taxes to get their fiscal houses in order, but most simply reduced spending. Several very large states with financial challenges, like Texas and Florida, balanced their budgets without any income tax at all by reducing spending. They are showing the way.
Washington could use the guidance. President Obama promised to cut the annual deficit in half in his first term. Instead, his budgets include near-trillion-dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. Unlike most state governments, and unlike America's families, President Obama has to this point refused to do the serious work of cutting spending.
The next opportunity to focus Washington's attention is the debt ceiling, which we hit last month. Treasury is now using some extraordinary tools to keep paying bills, but this likely won't last beyond February. So something has to happen. But what should happen?
Would you give your spendthrift teenager a higher limit on his credit card if he did not have a plan to live within his means? No way! Instead of helping, you'd be giving that irresponsible teen more borrowed money to spend, making his situation worse.
The same principle applies to our nation's credit card, which boys and girls of tomorrow will have to pay off. Increasing the debt limit without a credible path to balancing the budget puts off needed spending discipline and pushes us toward national ruin.
A truly balanced plan would lead to a balanced budget. The debt ceiling-if not raised-would force the federal government to operate on a balanced budget overnight. This approach could lead to unorganized cuts as the executive branch decided which bills to pay and not to pay, which of course is not ideal. (Congress could help by passing a prioritization bill in case we need it). Under a new law, or even without one, the Treasury would undoubtedly have enough money to pay our interest expense, avoiding a default on our debt.
Increasing the debt ceiling without reforms would be an unfortunate step toward a Greece-like meltdown at some point. Thankfully, the debt ceiling debate gives Washington policymakers a chance to get to much happier outcome: a balanced budget over time.
While our debt situation is dire, to this point our federal government has been able to use deficit financing because, as bad as things are here, they are better and more stable than in many parts of the world. It also helps in marketing our debt that the Federal Reserve is buying so much in a largely fruitless attempt to stimulate the economy. Regardless, we have a short window of opportunity to get our house in order before credit markets demand severe austerity.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today." That's why Congress should not raise the debt ceiling unless it includes immediate reforms today that put us on a sure path to balance, keep us in balance over time, provide for the common defense-and do not raise taxes.
There are a number of ways the budget could be balanced in short order. The Heritage Foundation put forward a plan that achieves balance in less than 10 years. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) sponsored that plan in a budget debate last year that also included plans from Senators Rand Paul (R-KY) and Pat Toomey (R-PA), both of which led to balance. None of them raised taxes. The House-passed Paul Ryan (R-WI) budget led to balance much later, but at least it was on the right path.
In contrast, liberals in Congress and the executive branch have not produced a single budget blueprint that balances within 10 years-or ever. For a President who likes to talk about a "balanced approach," none of his proposals achieves the most important balance: spending only what you take in in revenue. That's real balance.
Conservatives in the House and Senate are right to not raise the debt ceiling unless it includes reforms that put us on a path to balance within 10 years and keep us balanced. To do anything else would be abetting Washington's massive overspending habit.

Obama signs 23 executive gun orders
President Obama came out swinging today, not merely proposing but signing 23 executive orders on gun control. While none of them actually placed a ban on any particular weapon, this was a clear sign that the President feels Congress is worthless and they better play ball or else he's leaving them in the dust.
