Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr. noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later, he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution.
These were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. God bless America the one country unique in all the world and something worth standing up for!

Clinton Publicly Linked Benghazi to Video Before Woods and Doherty Were Killed

On the night of Sept. 11, 2012 - before former Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed by a terrorist mortar strike - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released a public statement linking the attack against the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, with an anti-Muslim video, which she referred to as "inflammatory material posted on the Internet."
Clinton's statement, still posted on State's website, is dated Sept. 11, 2012, and headlined: "Statement on the Attack in Benghazi."
The statement first notes that a State Department officer had been killed in Benghazi - an apparent reference to Information Management Officer Sean Smith, whose body had been recovered at the U.S. mission in Benghazi by U.S. security officers by about 5:30 p.m. Washington, D.C., time on Sept. 11 - or 11:30 p.m. Benghazi time.
The statement then talks about Clinton's communications that night with Libya's president and refers to what Clinton calls "inflammatory material posted on the Internet."

Ever since FDR made it his campaign song in 1932 while running for office during the Great Depression, the unofficial anthem of the Democratic Party has been that Tin Pan Alley classic, "Happy Days are Here Again." But no matter how often the old Victor spun, it would not be until well after Roosevelt's death that happy days would be here again.
Like Hope and Change, Happy Days are Here Again was a blandly optimistic and non-specific promise that good times were coming. Someday the happy days would arrive, an appropriate enough sentiment for a song whose pivotal moment came in the movie "Chasing Rainbows" where it was sung to reassure a cuckolded husband who is threatening to kill himself. And in an even more appropriate bit of symbolism, the actual movie footage of that moment is as lost as the happy times.
No matter how often the Democratic Party cheats on the American people, it can always break out a new rendition of "Happy Days are Here Again" to win them back. And even if the happy days never seem to actually arrive, the promise of "So long sad times" and "Howdy gay times" where "your troubles and cares are gone" is always a winner.
While the American Democratic Party may not have an official anthem, the British Labour Party does and its anthem, "The Red Flag" would be entirely appropriate for the new Democratic Party that no longer has anything in common with Thomas Jefferson or Andrew Jackson.
It might be awkward to imagine Harry Reid or Joe Manchin trying to make it through verses like, "The people's flag is deepest red" and the sonorous chorus, "Then raise the scarlet standard high /Within its shade we live and die/Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer/We'll keep the red flag flying here."
They would probably look almost as awkward singing it as Labour Party leader Ed Milliband does, but you could easily imagine Barack Obama and Valerie Jarrett belting it out. And that would be only right because while The Red Flag never gets around to mentioning Manchester, despite its popularity there, it does namecheck two cities. "In Moscow's vaults its hymns were sung/Chicago swells the surging throng."
These days red flag songs, once mandatory, are confined to all sorts of vaults in Moscow. The new Russian anthem is Putin's redress of the old Soviet one, with lyrics by the same composer. And the Soviet National Anthem, that secular hymn, has a familiar pedigree going back to the Anthem of the Bolshevik Party in 1938, which took its melody from "Life is better, Life is fun."
You might be forgiven for thinking that the Bolshevik Party had borrowed its melody from some Moscow musical, but that wasn't the case. "Life is better, Life is fun" was based on a statement by Stalin: "Life has become better, comrades. Life has become more fun." The year was 1935 and while it is impossible to know whether Comrade Stalin had decided to crib from the Democratic campaign of 1932, the theme was the same. So long sad times. Happy days were here again.
And just to remind everyone that happy days really were here again, Stalin began another round of brutal purges. A year earlier, Uncle Joe, as the Fireside Chatter liked to refer to one of the world's bloodiest mass murderers, had arranged for the murder of Sergei Kirov, who was everything that Stalin wasn't, and used the murder to begin a purge of anyone more popular than him, with the support of red flag wavers in Chicago, New York, London and Los Angeles.

U.S. Senator Pat Toomey is proud of our men and women in uniform currently serving to protect the United States. He understands how important it is that we continue to provide quality medical care and other benefits to all veterans, both those who served decades ago and those just returning from fighting in the war against terrorism.
Since joining the Senate, Sen. Toomey has worked to help our veterans obtain the services and benefits they rightfully deserve. He also recognizes the need to address administrative problems at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and will work with all stakeholders to help ensure that veterans receive first-rate service.
During the last Congress, Sen. Toomey supported several proposals that address these issues. Sen. Toomey voted in favor of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2012 (H.R. 2055), which provided $128 billion for the VA for fiscal year 2012 - a 6 percent increase from fiscal year 2011 levels.
With the unemployment rate for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans at more than 12 percent, we must ensure that veterans coming home from the battlefield will return to employment and new opportunities. Sen. Toomey voted in support of the 3 Percent Withholding Repeal and Job Creation Act (H.R. 674) that created a tax credit for employers who hire unemployed veterans. The bill also provides $1,473 a month for one year to cover college or vocational school tuition for unemployed veterans.
Sen. Toomey introduced a bill (S. 3316) to create a one-year pilot program to help veterans find jobs based on their military experience. The pilot job search program, which would be conducted at the Labor Department's One-Stop Centers, would provide new tools for veterans to find jobs online. The new tools would match veterans with available jobs based on the skills they've gained in the military, and employers would be able to post vacancies. The bill was cosponsored by Senator Burr of North Carolina, a senior member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.
A June 2011 Government Accountability Office report found serious inadequacies in measures to prevent sexual assault in VA facilities, due to underreporting, poor oversight and lack of adequate security. In response, Sen. Toomey introduced the Veterans Sexual Assault Prevention Act (S. 1689) to protect VA facility patients from sexual assault. Sen. Toomey's measure, which has been signed into law, mandates a new standard of care and protection for patients at VA facilities, including new reporting procedures, an oversight system, and enhanced physical security measures.
Additionally, Senator Toomey introduced a bill (S. 3640) to require the Transportation Security Administration to work with the VA and local charities to distribute unclaimed clothing left at airport security checkpoints to homeless and needy veterans and their families. His bill passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The legislation is pending signature by the President.
Senator Toomey is deeply concerned about the backlog of veterans' disabilities claims. VA's annual claims are expected to reach 1,250,000 in 2013, an increase of almost 60 percent since 2005. He has asked the VA to inform him about how VA will accomplish its strategic goal that no claim will be more than 125 days old in 2015.
Sen. Toomey is a member of several Senate military caucuses, including the bipartisan Senate Veterans Jobs Caucus, the Senate National Guard Caucus, the Senate Army Caucus and the Senate Special Operations Caucus.
During his third year in the Senate, Sen. Toomey will continue to support sensible legislation protecting the welfare of our veterans. AAA warns E15 gasoline could cause car damage

E15, a higher blend of ethanol and gasoline, has rolled out in a handful of states. But its use in older vehicles is generating warnings from AAA, which says E15 could be harmful to pre-2012 vehicles.
The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties.
AAA, which issued its warning Friday, says just 12 million of more than 240 million cars, trucks and SUVs now in use have manufacturers' approval for E15. Flex-fuel vehicles, 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles, 2013 Fords and 2001 and later model Porsches are the exceptions, according to AAA, the nation's largest motorist group, with 53.5 million members.
"It is clear that millions of Americans are unfamiliar with E15, which means there is a strong possibility that many may improperly fill up using this gasoline and damage their vehicle," AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet tells USA TODAY. "Bringing E15 to the market without adequate safeguards does not responsibly meet the needs of consumers."
On Monday, President Barack Obama nominated former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel to be his next Secretary of Defense in succession to Leon Panetta. Chuck Hagel's record is one of being a frightening and dangerous apologist for terrorist groups like Hamas and Hizballah, as well as for the Iranian terrorist regime, while being arguably one of the most vicious and hostile critics of Israel. The ZOA believes that appointing Chuck Hagel as Defense Secretary would also serve to confirm the fears that many have that President Obama is no friend of Israel and is not serious about stopping Iran's nuclear program.

BACKGROUND:
In 2009, Hagel signed a letter urging President Obama to begin direct negotiations with Hamas, a U.S. designated terrorist group committed in its Charter to the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews, a position President Obama has not taken up.
In a 2006 interview with former Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller, Hagel said that "the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people" on Capitol Hill ('Hagel named to intelligence board,' Jewish Telegraphic Agency, October 29, 2009).
In July 2006, at the outbreak of the Lebanon war, Hagel argued against giving Israel the time to break Hizballah, urging instead an immediate ceasefire ('Key Republican breaks with Bush on Mideast,' CNN.com, July 31, 2006).
December 2005: Hagel was one of only 27 senators who refused to sign a letter to President Bush urging him to pressure the Palestinian Authority (PA) to ban terrorist groups from participating in Palestinian legislative elections.
June 2004, Hagel refused to sign a letter urging President Bush to highlight Iran's nuclear program at the G-8 summit and was one of only two senators in to vote against renewal of the Libya-Iran sanctions act.
November 2001: Hagel was one of only 11 senators who refused to sign a letter urging President Bush not to meet with the late Yasser Arafat until his forces ended the violence against Israel.
In July 2001, Hagel was one of only two senators to vote against extending the original Iranian sanctions bill.
October 2000: Hagel was one of only four senators who refused to sign a Senate letter in support of Israel.

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet,The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

Who Is Really for Election Reform?

A top priority of Democrats nationwide is to try to expand early voting even beyond the more than 40-plus million votes that were cast on days other than Election Day in 2012 or by mail. The present system balkanizes and deprives our nation of the unifying value of one Nation on Election Day.
Piers Morgan has been in the news a lot lately with his interviews on gun control. He's made it his cause of late. He interviewed my friend Larry Pratt a couple of weeks ago and really attacked Larry. The other night he interviewed that conspiracy crank Alex Jones and many conservatives and gun owners have lamented a perception that Alex Jones will become the face of gun owners.
The conversations have actually been fascinating. Piers Morgan isn't the only one to engage in these, but he's been one of the most prominent.
Unfortunately, the incident that set off all these discussions - the Newtown, CT tragedy - is causing policy makers and news figures to fixate on all the wrong things, or at least the things with the least amount of meaning.
The fact is the tragedy in Connecticut was terrible. But it is also not a common act. It is called a "random act of violence" because it is random.
After the shooting over the summer in Aurora, CO, the President and his team could have picked up the gun issue, but they chose not too because it is a political hot potato and hurts the Democrats. They are compensating in light of this new tragedy, but the discussed policy proposals thus far probably would do no good. Increasing gun free school zones and punishment for violating those zones will not stop a mass shooter.
Nonetheless, the policy makers want to focus on mass shooters and not every day shooters. They want to focus on rifles and not handguns. Rifles, interestingly enough, contribute to far fewer murders than knives, hands, feet, clubs, or hammers.
But the discussion will not move to handguns because handguns are pretty popular in this country. Many people own them - far more own them than own semi-automatic rifles. More so, handguns are used in vastly more crimes.

Islam 'Helped to Shape' CIA Nominee John Brennan's World View

(CNSNews.com) - As a college student in the 1970s, John Brennan, President Obama's nominee for CIA director, traveled in Indonesia where - he recalled in a speech in New York in 2010 - "despite my long hair, my earring and my obvious American appearance, I was welcomed throughout that country, in a way that is a reflection of the tremendous warmth of Islamic cultures and societies."
Brennan's Feb. 13, 2010 address to a meeting at the Islamic Center at New York University, facilitated by the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), provided an insight into his views on Islam, a faith which he said during the speech had "helped to shape my own world view."
Travels around the world over more than three decades had taught him about "the goodness and beauty of Islam," said Brennan, whose 25-year career at the CIA until 2005 included a stint as station chief in Riyadh.
"Like the president during his childhood years in Jakarta, I came to see Islam not how it is often misrepresented, but for what it is - how it is practiced every day, by well over a billion Muslims worldwide, a faith of peace and tolerance and great diversity."
In the speech, during which he drew applause after speaking in Arabic for more than a minute, Brennan used terms evidently designed to appeal to his audience, such as "Al-Quds" for Jerusalem, "Palestine" and "as the Qur'an reveals" - in keeping with the Muslim belief that the Qur'an was "revealed" directly by Allah to Mohammed through the angel Jibril (Gabriel).
He condemned what he said were negative stereotypes in the U.S. about Muslims and hostility towards Islam, adding that government actions and policies had contributed to the problem but saying this would change under Obama.
"Ignorance is a threat to our national security, prejudice is a threat to our national security, discrimination is a threat to our national security. And those who purport to be religious are frequently the most egregious purveyors of ignorance, prejudice and discrimination - and it must stop," he said.
"We must also acknowledge that over the years the actions of our own government have at times perpetuated those attitudes," Brennan continued.
"Violations of the Patriot Act; surveillance that has been excessive; policies perceived as profiling; over-inclusive no-fly lists subjecting law-abiding individuals to unnecessary searches and inconvenience; creating an unhealthy atmosphere around many Muslim charities that made Muslims hesitant to fulfill their sacred obligation of zakat [an Islamic tithe or tax] - these are challenges we face, we face together as Americans, and President Obama and his administration are pursuing a comprehensive approach to address them," he said.
As Obama's counterterrorism adviser, Brennan - a Jesuit-educated Catholic - has played a prominent role in the administration's outreach to Muslims, American Muslims especially. He has also been a leading proponent of the effort to stop using terms many Muslims find offensive, such as "jihadist" as a descriptor for terrorists acting in the name of Islam.
"They are not jihadists," he told the NYU audience in 2010, "for jihad is a holy struggle, an effort to purify, for a legitimate purpose. And there is nothing, absolutely nothing holy or pure or legitimate or Islamic about murdering innocent men, women and children."
Brennan had made similar comments the previous August, telling a Center for Strategic and International Studies event that "describing terrorists in this way, using the legitimate term 'jihad' - which means to purify oneself or to wage a holy struggle for a moral goal - risks giving these murderers the religious legitimacy they desperately seek but in no way deserve." [NOTE: One of the most widely-used manuals of Sharia law, "Reliance of the Traveller: A Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law", approved by the highest Islamic religious authorities of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and America, says: "Jihad means to war against non-Muslims." So, Brennan thinks he knows more about Islam than the most respected Islamic relligious authorities?]
The administration's National Security Strategy, released three months after the NYU speech, repeatedly used variations of the phrase "al-Qaeda and its affiliates" in identifying the enemy. The term "jihadist" and did not appear in the 52-page document and the word "Islam" appeared twice - the U.S. was not fighting a war against Islam, it said, and "neither Islam nor any other religion condones the slaughter of innocents."
(By contrast the Bush administration's 2006 NSS stated that "the struggle against militant Islamic radicalism is the great ideological conflict of the early years of the 21st century," although it also said that Islam "has been twisted and made to serve an evil end.")
When he previewed the NSS document in a speech several days before the launch, Brennan said, "Our enemy is not terrorism because terrorism is but a tactic. Nor do we describe our enemy as jihadists or Islamists because jihad is holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam meaning to purify oneself or one's community."
Newspapers in the Islamic world routinely use the term "jihadist" (or, in South Asia, "jihadi") in their news reporting on terrorist acts, without suggesting that the term has been misappropriated.

The Washington think tank overseen by President Obama's defense secretary-designate predicts that Iran one day will be a "natural partner" for the United States and could possess nuclear weapons.
It also puts the onus on Israel to make peace with Palestinians, many of whom are governed by Hamas, an Iran-backed terrorist group bent on the destruction of the Jewish state.
The views are contained in a major policy paper by the Atlantic Council, for which former Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska serves as chairman. The paper shows the foreign policy culture from which Mr. Hagel emerges to face Senate Armed Services Committee confirmation hearings.
The paper also may explain the underpinnings for Mr. Hagel's dovish views on Iran for which he will receive close scrutiny by fellow Republicans.
Mr. Obama on Monday presented Mr. Hagel as the nominee to replace Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta. Mr. Hagel has taken a far less hawkish stance than Mr. Panetta, who has vowed that Tehran will not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and talks of a military option to stop the regime.
Iran's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday approved Mr. Hagel's nomination, saying it hopes his appointment as Pentagon chief would improve relations between the U.S. and the Islamic republic.

I have to admit that, as much as I hate the judge's decision, I can't deny that it will improve the student's education by preparing him for what American life is going to be like when he grows up to take his place as a serf in the system. Reuters reports,
"A public school district in Texas can require students to wear locator chips when they are on school property, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday in a case raising technology-driven privacy concerns among liberal and conservative groups alike. U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia said the San Antonio Northside School District had the right to expel sophomore Andrea Hernandez, 15, from a magnet school at Jay High School, because she refused to wear the device, which is required of all students. The judge refused the student's request to block the district from removing her from the school while the case works its way through the federal courts."
Of course, preparing students for this kind of future is a self-fulfilling outcome. It is by training children to accept RFID monitoring that the state is more likely to get away with mandating it for adults in the future. The ACLU said it well:
"We don't want to see this kind of intrusive surveillance infrastructure gain inroads into our culture. We should not be teaching our children to accept such an intrusive surveillance technology."

Obama's Gun Task Force Member Has Son Convicted Of Planning School Mass Murder
Well the hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me. In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Barack Obama established a task force, headed by Vice President Joe Biden, to come up with solutions to end gun violence. However, one of the members of Biden's task force has a son that has been convicted, not just charged, but convicted, of planning a mass murder at a high school in Massachusetts in 2004.
President of the National Assocation of Police Officers and Boston Police Officer Thomas Nee is the member in question. His son, Josephe Nee, was convicted in February 2008 for planning a Columbine-style ambush at Marshfield High School in 2004.
Today, the Hall of Fame will unveil its class of 2013. This is the first year of eligibility for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Sammy Sosa, three stars of baseball's steroid era, all of whom were tainted by it. "Exit polling" of those who vote on Hall of Fame membership apparently suggests that none of the three will make it this year.
Regardless of the outcome, the Hall is in an untenable position. What sense does it make to have a Hall of Fame that doesn't include the most successful hitter (Bonds) and the most successful pitcher (Clemens) of the past 50 years? Both players presumably would have coasted into the Hall of Fame based on performance that preceded the period during which they are believed to have been on steriods.
On the other hand, it seems like a breach of good faith to bestow baseball's ultimate honor on cheats. That, at least, seems to be the sentiment of a number of Hall of Famers who have said they will boycott its ceremonies if Bonds, Clemens, or Sosa is admitted.
In my wasted youth (i.e., up until the age of 45), I used to spend hours poring over baseball statistics trying to determine, say, the top 20 second basemen of all time. Who in his right mind would indulge in such a hobby now, when we don't know (1) which players from the 1990s and early 2000s gained an unfair advantage through drugs, (2) the precise period in which they gained it, or (3) the extent of the advantage?
If the game didn't care enough to maintain the integrity of its history, why should we care enough to obsess about that history or even to worry who makes the Hall of Fame?
David Brooks argues that President Obama selected Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense because he wants Hagel to supervise the beginning of a generation-long process of defense cutbacks. The theory is that such cutbacks will go down better with a Republican, and a war hero, at the Pentagon to provide political cover.
Brooks may be right, but I doubt it. During Hagel's "trial balloon" period, it became clear that Hagel will struggle mightily for Republican support.
How much political cover will Hagel bring if he is confirmed with virtually no Republican votes? And why would Obama believe his defense cuts will go down better with a Secretary of Defense who, because of his unpopularity, probably will be the constant target of sniping once installed?

Over the holidays my daughter Eliana was home poring over an advance copy of General McChrystal's memoir, My Share of the Task, officially published this week. Her take on the book makes points I haven't seen made elsewhere. I want to take the liberty of highlighting Eliana's column for readers who may find the book or the subject of interest.

The Washington, D.C. police department has completed its investigation of David Gregory and has presented his case to the District's Office of the Attorney General for "a determination of the prosecutorial merit of the case." Gregory, it will be recalled, was in possession of a high-capacity ammunition magazine which he displayed on television. In Washington, D.C., possessing a magazine capable of holding 10 or more rounds of ammunition, even if empty, is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
I don't know much about D.C. criminal procedure, but I assume the police found reason to believe that Gregory violated the law; otherwise I doubt it would have "presented" his case. Now it is up to the D.C. Attorney General, Irving Nathan, to determine whether to prosecute. This decision, I imagine, will entail a review of the evidence presented and, perhaps, some exercise of prosecutorial discretion.
I tend to agree with NRA President David Keene, who told CNN he did not think Gregory should be prosecuted because the portion of the law he violated is silly. However, the D.C. police reportedly told NBC in advance that it would violate the law to show the magazine. If so, and assuming the police offered no conflicting opinion, the ensuing violation seems willful and flagrant, making it difficult not prosecute, I should think.

One of the most common themes in the emails I receive every day is the growing belief that Washington is broken, that the "system just doesn't work anymore." It's a widely held view. A Gallup poll released Monday found that 77% of Americans felt that "the way politics works in Washington these days is causing serious harm to the United States."
Day after day, Barack Obama and the "mainstream media" blame congressional Republicans and so-called "Tea Party extremists" for the dysfunction and gridlock in Washington. So I was amused by a column in Politico today headlined, "Why President Obama Is Picking Fights With Congress." And there is also this headline from The Hill: "Raring For A Fight, Obama Heads Into His Second Term Swinging."
In other words, Obama is intentionally creating conflicts to portray Republicans as extremists in order to keep his left-wing base energized for the 2014 elections. Friends, this is nothing new. This is how Obama has operated from day one!
That is why Republican leaders have been so frustrated in their attempts to negotiate with Obama. He simply is not negotiating in good faith. It's all about posturing for the next election. You and I know this, but unfortunately many Americans still don't understand.
It is infuriating, but I believe Obama is overplaying his hand. The country is narrowly divided. Yes, he won reelection, but with only 51% of the vote. Hundreds of House Republicans won too. There is no mandate for Obama's left-wing agenda. Just consider some of the "fights" Obama is picking right now:
Chuck Hagel -- Obama is daring the GOP to oppose a decorated Vietnam veteran and "one of their own." This is coming from the man who launched his political career in the living room of radical domestic terrorists who bombed the Pentagon. Obama's nomination of Hagel is so controversial that some Senate Democrats aren't even on board. Yet Republicans are portrayed as "unreasonable obstructionists."
Gun Control -- It remains to be seen exactly what proposals will emerge from Vice President Joe Biden's commission later this month. But the polling suggests that it is the political left, not the NRA, that is out-of-touch with public opinion.
A December 2012 poll by the Washington Post found that only 32% of respondents favored "passing stricter gun-control laws," while 49% preferred "stricter enforcement of existing laws." Seventy-one percent said they opposed a nationwide ban on handguns. A Gallup poll found that new gun control legislation ranked fourth on a list of ideas to prevent school shootings. "Increasing the police presence at schools" was the most popular idea, and presumably the police officers would be armed -- the very position put forward by the NRA after the Newtown shootings.
Already one Senate Democrat has said that the White House proposals she is hearing about are "way, way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about." I suspect that Democrat senators up for reelection in 2014 in Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Dakota and West Virginia might agree with her.
Taxes -- Fresh off his reelection victory, Obama demanded higher taxes on the rich. He got them in the fiscal cliff deal.
According to a Pew poll, 57% say Obama got more of what he wanted, while 20% say Republicans got more. But 52% say the deal will hurt people like them, while only 30% say it will help them. When asked about its effect on the economy, 46% said it would hurt the economy, and 36% said it would help.
Gallup found similar results. Only 43% of adults approved of the fiscal cliff deal, while 45% opposed it. Obama may have won, but the public doesn't seem particularly happy about it. Now the fight shifts to spending, where Obama is much more vulnerable.
I know many good folks are frustrated with Washington, but it's important to keep things in perspective. Conservatives do not control Washington, and Obama is more interested in scoring cheap political points than he is in good government.
Biden Warns Of Executive Orders On Guns
Vice President Biden talked to the media today before meeting with victims of gun violence. His words have stoked fears among conservatives and gun owners that Obama is preparing another assault on the Constitution. Biden said:
"The president is going to act. There are executive orders, there's executive action that can be taken. We haven't decided what that is yet. But we're compiling it all with the help of the attorney general and the rest of the cabinet members as well as legislative action that we believe is required."
Biden called it a "moral issue" and added, "It's critically important that we act."
Given the administration's disdain for the Constitution, Biden's remarks are worrisome. His assertion that he is seeking guidance from Attorney General Eric Holder of "Fast and Furious" infamy is hardly reassuring.
Something else jumped out at me too. Biden said that gun violence/restrictions are a "moral issue." Increasingly, the left dresses up its statist agenda with appeals to morality. Obama will often announce some new initiative that inevitably grows government or shrinks your paycheck, and he will punctuate his argument by stating firmly, "It's the right thing to do."
Sadly, many on the political right have run away from appeals to morality. We are told by the media and even by some of our political "allies" that we shouldn't be talking about the morality of abortion on demand or same-sex marriage. We often downplay or ignore the moral implications of Obama's class warfare, which is built on envy, or his runaway deficit spending, which children not yet born will have to pay back.
Conservatives and the Republican Party need to rediscover the language of the heart and soul. If we don't, history will record that big government, secular socialists stole it from us to seduce the American people.
More Trouble For Obama Nominees
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) announced yesterday that he would delay John Brennan's confirmation to be Director of the CIA until the Obama Administration answers questions about the Benghazi attacks. Here is an excerpt of his statement:
"I have not forgotten about the Benghazi debacle and still have many questions about what transpired before, during and after the attack on our consulate. In that regard, I do not believe we should confirm anyone as Director of the CIA until our questions are answered... I have tried -- repeatedly -- to get information on Benghazi but my requests have been repeatedly ignored. ... The stonewalling on Benghazi by the Obama Administration must come to an end."
It was also announced yesterday that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on January 22nd. Perhaps then Senator Graham will get the answers he's looking for, but I'm not holding my breath.
Vice President Joe Biden, who has been charged by President Obama with running the task force to prevent situations like the Sandy Hook massacre, announced that he wouldn't be raising legislative solutions at all.

A group of Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania Quakers has discovered they have no "friends" in the union movement. The gentile folk that are called Friends or Quakers wanted to have a new meetinghouse built and foolishly thought they should engage the cheapest construction company to get the job done. Their problems arose when the word got out that the company they hired used non-union workers. This "insult" enraged the members of several unions that lost out on the work involved. The Friends Community could not afford to build their new meetinghouse if they had to knuckle under and pay union extortionist rates. But that meant nothing to the thugs who represent the construction unions in the Philadelphia area. They wanted their tribute and that was all there was to it.
In Sunday's New York Times, Elisabeth Rosenthal claimed, as the title of her article put it, "More Guns = More Killing." She based this on evidence that would never be permitted in any other context at the Times: 1) anecdotal observations; and 2) bald assertions of an activist, blandly repeated with absolutely no independent fact-checking by the Times.
There is an academic, peer-reviewed, long-term study of the effect of various public policies on public, multiple shootings in all 50 states over a 20-year period performed by renowned economists at the University of Chicago and Yale, William Landes and John Lott. It concluded that the only policy to reduce the incidence of, and casualties from, mass shootings are concealed-carry laws. The Times will never mention this study.

Collective bargaining laws give unions an effective monopoly on many state and local government workforces. They force the government to negotiate employment terms with the union, and all employees must accept that union's representation. Unions use this power to pressure state and local governments into accepting expensive contracts, which now threaten many cities with bankruptcy.

The Heritage Foundation's George Kryvenka realized growing up that communism and oppression have real and dire consequences. As a child in Belarus, a former Soviet republic, propaganda from the Soviet and then the Belarusian government led him to believe the United States was the enemy. But his own country's harsh government and his knowledge of English led him to reconsider. Today he proudly lives in Maryland and works as Heritage's facilities manager.
America, Kryvenka says, is a free country. He deeply values the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted. For instance, the police here are our friends rather than regime enforcers. Americans can and do speak up when they see an injustice, and hard work is rewarded. That's to say nothing of the basics of American civic life, like elections. In Belarus, any opposition to the incumbent is often eliminated before the election.
Kryvenka reminds us finally of the importance of family and of remembering the lessons from the past. These are too precious to give up.
Though the government's entitlement spending is still spiraling out of control, taxpayers have finally caught a break: The recently passed "fiscal cliff" deal included the repeal of one of Obamacare's worst provisions, the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act.
The CLASS Act was a new entitlement program included in Obamacare. CLASS was created as a voluntary, government-run long-term care (LTC) program. It was supposed to be fully funded from the premiums paid by its beneficiaries and require no federal taxpayer dollars.
But the program was so poorly designed-much like the rest of Obamacare-that even the Obama Administration had to admit it wouldn't work.
Yesterday's Morning Bell points out other elements of the law that are under attack from liberals and conservatives alike.
The deal to raise taxes on high earners won't solve America's debt crisis, former Attorney General Ed Meese told Fox Business' Neil Cavuto earlier this week. AIG, the insurance organization bailed out by the U.S. government for $182 billion in 2008, may now file a lawsuit against the federal government over what it calls the unfair terms of the deal.
How many people would be in jail if annoying or offending a person were against the law? The answer: pretty much everyone. If you think that you might be one of these people and you like to send information electronically, there are a few places you should probably avoid.
Vernon County, Wisconsin is among a growing number of jurisdictions that are implementing so-called cyber-bullying laws. A Vernon County ordinance makes it a crime to "send information to another person by electronic means with the intent to annoy, offend, demean, ridicule, degrade, belittle, disparage, or humiliate any person." There is an exception if the information serves a "legitimate purpose."
The statute is a clear violation of the First Amendment. Under the First Amendment, offensive speech is protected as long as it is not incitement to immediate unlawful conduct, obscene, child pornography, a threat, or fighting words. Here, the ordinance goes far beyond those unprotected categories of speech and targets speech that is simply annoying.
Putting First Amendment issues aside, the statute still fails to pass constitutional muster. For a criminal law to be constitutional, it must be written so that the average citizen can know what the law prohibits. If a law is too vague, it is void. This principle is appropriately called the Void for Vagueness Doctrine.
Does the Vernon County ordinance clearly state what conduct is prohibited? What does "annoy" mean? What does "offend" mean? What about "humiliate"? These things can mean different things to different people. As one commentator noted, the officials who implemented this law probably find criticism of the law offensive.
What if a person finds religious teachings offensive and an individual is constantly posting religious messages on his Facebook page?
Are we shifting from a society where children complain to their parents about siblings or friends to one where children file complaints with the police about the same people?
It used to be, "Mom! She is being mean to me! Make her stop!" Will it soon be, "Officer! She is offending me on Facebook! Put her in jail!"?
This ordinance is incredibly overbroad and puts ordinary citizens in jeopardy of becoming criminals. This is one more example of the increasing overcriminalization problem at every level of government.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has beaten U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder once again on the voter ID issue, this time in a dispute over costs. On Friday, January 4, a three-judge federal court panel declared that South Carolina would obtain reimbursement for its requested litigation costs from the Dept. of Justice and others who intervened in the recent lawsuit including the NAACP.

Hobby Lobby gained national attention when its leadership announced they would not bow to the Obama Administration's violation of their religious liberty. Thousands of Americans pledged to shop at the retailer over the weekend to show their appreciation for this stand-a stand that could cost the company up to $1.3 million in fines per day.
Like many other companies, Hobby Lobby's health insurance plan renewed on January 1, causing them to be subject to the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate under Obamacare. This mandate forces employers to pay for coverage of abortion-inducing drugs like the "morning after" and "week after" pills, which directly violates many Americans' deeply held beliefs-including Hobby Lobby's owners, the Green family. The Greens, who founded the company, close all its locations on Sundays and seek to operate in accordance with Christian principles-including offering an employee health care plan that aligns with those values.
If employers don't change their health plans to comply, they will be hit with fines-up to $100 per employee per day. But if they stop providing health coverage, Obamacare's double whammy means that, come 2014, employers with more than 50 employees could instead be hit with fines for that.
Thirteen for-profit companies have received rulings touching on the merits of their cases from the courts so far. Ten have secured relief-though temporary-from having the mandate enforced against them. Three companies have been denied relief: Hobby Lobby, Autocam Corp., and Grote Industries.
Hobby Lobby founder and CEO David Green said, "The conflict for me is that our family is being forced to choose between following the laws of the country that we love or maintaining the religious beliefs that have made our business successful and have supported our family and thousands of our employees and their families."
Hobby Lobby has more than 13,000 employees, so the $100 per employee per day fine is crippling.
John Kennedy, CEO of Autocam in Grand Rapids, MI, says his employees "are like family" and that he "can't in good conscience choose between violating my beliefs and meeting my associates' needs. It just doesn't seem right."
William Grote III, CEO of Grote Industries, which manufactures vehicle lighting and safety systems, has said, "It would easily destroy the company should we not do it."
For family business owners like the Kortes, a Roman Catholic family seeking to manage their construction company, K & L Contractors, in a manner consistent with their faith, this means penalties of as much as $730,000 per year, an amount that would be financially ruinous for their company and for them personally.
But at least one federal appellate court has expressly rejected the position that the Kortes' religious freedom rights depend solely on the fact that they operate a secular, for-profit business, and litigation over this key legal question, which affects other family business owners like the Greens of Hobby Lobby, is likely headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Late last year, a three-judge panel of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 to issue a preliminary injunction in favor of the Kortes, concluding that their Religious Freedom Restoration Act challenge to the HHS mandate is likely to succeed when their case is ultimately decided. It criticized the government's position for "ignor[ing] that Cyril and Jane Korte are also plaintiffs" who "would have to violate their religious beliefs to operate their company in compliance with [the HHS mandate]." "That the Kortes operate their business in the corporate form is not dispositive of their claim," the court held.
In other words, the fact that they operate a business doesn't mean they give up their rights.
Pastor and author Rick Warren said in a statement about Hobby Lobby's stance:
Every American who loves freedom should shudder at the precedent the government is trying to establish by denying Hobby Lobby the full protection of the First Amendment.
Freedom of religion doesn't stop when an American walks outside his or her home or place of worship. For these business owners trying to live out their beliefs in the way they run their businesses, this mandate forces an excruciating decision.
