Gun Control, Thought Control and People Control
The gun control debate, like all debates with the left, is reducible to the question of whether we are individuals who make our own decisions or a great squishy social mass that helplessly responds to stimuli. Do people kill with guns or does the availability of guns kill people? Do bad eating habits kill people or does the availability of junk food kill people? To the left these are distinctions without a difference. If a thing is available then it is the cause of the problem. The individual cannot be held accountable for shooting someone if there are guns for sale. Individuals have no role to play because they are not moral actors, only members of a mob responding to stimuli. You wouldn't blame a dog for overeating; you blame the owners for overfeeding him. Nor do you blame a dog for biting a neighbor. You might punish him, but the punishment is training, not a recognition of authentic responsibility on the part of the canine. And the way that you think of a dog, is the way that the left thinks of you. When you misbehave, the left looks around for your owner. The cult of the left believes that it is engaged in a great apocalyptic battle with corporations and industrialists for the ownership of the unthinking masses. Its acolytes see themselves as the individuals who have been "liberated" to think for themselves. They make choices. You however are just a member of the unthinking masses. You are not really a person, but only respond to the agendas of your corporate overlords. If you eat too much, it's because corporations make you eat. If you kill, it's because corporations encourage you to buy guns. You are not an individual. You are a social problem.

Syrian Rebels Now Have Chemical Weapons
December 18, 2012 By Theodore and Walid Shoebatt
We have heard repeatedly from politicians and pundits alike that Assad may very well be using his chemical weapons against the rebels. A number of days ago John Baird, Canada's foreign minister, expressed his fear that Assad will be using chemical weapons on his own people.
Well, we have warned numerous times, it's the Syrian rebels who we need to worry about - not Assad. The rebels have seized chemical weapons, and they are willing to use them on innocent people. According to Russia Today, Syrian rebels have obtained chemical weapons from Libya and are planning on using them on civilians, and then blaming it on Assad. This is an effort between the Syrian rebels and their allies in Turkey, alongside cooperation with Libyan rebels under Abdel Hakim bel Haj.
The Al-Rih al-Sarsar Chemical Brigade in Syria, according to The Campaign to Return to Emergency Law:
carries out science experiments on animals by poisoning them, using toxic gases, and says the allies of the Syrian government will be poisoned just like the animals.
Here is a video released by the brigade showing the chemical powders they are planning on using to kill civilians who support Assad:
Video of chemicals.
Notice, the company name for these materials is Tekkim, a chemical factory in Turkey. The Syrian media reports that the Turks are involved in giving these materials to Syria.
How are the rebels testing these chemicals? On rabbits:
Video of Syrian rebels testing chemicals on rabbits.
Where is the outcry of PETA on this animal cruelty?

1. December 13th meeting moved to Thursday Dec 20 from 7-9pm. Christmas/Hanukkah meeting! We will concentrate less on action items and more on fun - we'll have a good video or something planned. We want to get some Chick-fil-A catering but we don't want to buy more than we'll eat so please let us know if you're coming and if you'll eat Chick-fil-A? Click here for their catering menu.
Just email us if you're coming: central.montco.ptpp@gmail.com And email us if you would attend an Agenda 21 seminar on Jan 26. (Estimated to take 3-4 hrs, cost $10 depending on interest and venue).
2. Agenda 21 Seminar interest? Please respond and let us or Jim Rodkey at jmrodkey@live.com know what your Interest is in attending an Agenda 21 seminar.
Agenda 21 seminar details. We are hearing more and more about Agenda 21. Knowing that 40 minutes with a guest speaker at a local meeting is not nearly enough time to cover the scope of the entire Agenda 21 objectives we would like to hold a Seminar on Sustainable Development (Agenda 21) on January 26 (date tentative depending on response). The Seminar, at this point would be internal, but would make heavy use of outside sources as well as provide you with necessary materials including the original Agenda 21 proposal. The 4 major points in covering this Seminar would include: - A comprehensive overview of Sustainable Development-Agenda 21.
- Agenda 21, ICLEI, NGO's and the Administrative State - how they work together to bypass the Constitution and implement law through regulation. (this is important so people understand how non-binding U.N policy become federal law that then moves down to our local government. This would also contrast the difference between a bottom up government (our Republic) and a top down government (a Soviet).
- Global governance through local initiative.
- Property Rights - the principle that formed the nation!
What we need to know is interest so we can establish a place for the meeting. We expect a fee of $10 to cover materials and rental of the facility and we expect this to cover at least 3 to 4 hours depending on group participation. If you could respond to this message blast by contacting Jim Rodkey at jmrodkey@live.com. We'll get the ball rolling and keep you updated on the Seminar as we move forward. Thank you!
Thanks folks, -Pam, Jim, Tim

AMERICAN JEWS AND CHRISTIAN EVANGELICALS: IRRECONCILABLE ENEMIES OR INEVITABLE ALLIES?
|
|
Michael Medved is a nationally syndicated radio talk show host and bestselling author. His daily show is heard by over 3.75 million people across the country. Born in Philadelphia, Michael won admission to Yale at age 16 as a National Merit Scholar. He majored in American History and graduated with honors, before attending Yale Law School, where his classmates included Bill and Hillary Clinton. Michael wrote his first bestseller at age 26 - "What Really Happened to the Class of '65?" - a skeptical reconsideration of the "counterculture" of the 1960's that became a weekly TV series on NBC.
Many American Jews distrust and even fear the rise of the evangelical Christianity. They see this religious movement as a threat to the survival of Judaism in the United States and to the continuance of a society that values pluralism and religious liberty. On the other hand increasing numbers of American Jews view evangelicals as natural allies, not just when it comes to support of Israel, but on a range of social issues here in the U.S. In this provocative presentation, Michael Medved will explain where Jews and Christians already agree, and where they can never agree, in their participation in the ongoing battles shaping American society.

Individuals sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister agenda have infiltrated the Obama Administration.
Brainwashed by the Muslim Students Association and then propelled in to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the David Horowitz Freedom Center tracks the path of Huma Abedin and other Muslim sympathizers who have navigated their way into positions of great influence in the Obama Administration. Everything is revealed in the explosive new Freedom Center pamphlet, "The Muslim Brotherhood in the Obama Administration," written by Frank Gaffney, national security expert who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan.
The David Horowitz Freedom Center is committed to educating the public on the Muslim Brotherhood's sinister Agenda. That is why we are giving away this pamphlet for FREE.

Your Privacy Under Siege: DOJ Gains New Power To Spy On You
| |
|
Your privacy as an American citizen is ending. The United States government at this point is assuming everyone is a terrorist until proven otherwise-and that is if you are even given the chance to prove your innocence once charged.
Attorney General Eric Holder just granted a secret government agreement to the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) that gives them the power to store complete dossiers on U.S. citizens-everyone-even if you are not suspected of committing a crime. And perhaps most disturbing, this new change will allow our information to be given to foreign governments for analysis. So, not only will the U.S. government be sifting through our files, foreign governments will be allowed to do the same thing as they look for clues on current cases and analyze whether innocent people may commit one in the future!
Fax Congress Now!
The NCTC can now copy entire government databases (such as flight records, casino employee lists, families who hosted foreign exchange students, financial forms, and VA health records) and store this data for up to five years. They can review it and analyze it for suspicious behavior-even if there is no reason to suspect criminal behavior.
No elected representative debated this. It was not voted on. The access was simply handed over to the NCTC by Holder after counterterrorism officials met in the White House Situation Room last March and insisted that a giant "dragnet" be created that would essentially eliminate your right to privacy. This broad move was mainly in response to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian underwear bomber. The NCTC, in the words of the Wall St. Journal, "spectacularly" dropped the ball on Abdulmutallab and these vast new powers are simply a way for them to save face and try to prevent something like that from happening in the future-at the expense of our Constitutional rights.

The Cost of Spending: National debt nears 'dangerous level'
By Bret Baier
December 18, 2012
The national debt clock is spinning faster every year. At last check, it was approaching $16.4 trillion. Just four years ago, it was $10.6 trillion. The skyrocketing number is, to say the least, reason for concern for every American. Here's why: As of today, every household in the United States owes about $140,000 of this debt. The country is borrowing roughly $6 billion every day, and $239 million every hour. Put another way, that's $4 million every minute. The country runs up so much debt for a fairly basic reason -- it spends far more than it takes in. This year, for every dollar in revenue the federal government brought in, it spent two dollars and six cents. That shortfall over the course of the year adds up to the annual deficit. The national debt -- or total accumulated debt -- is the sum of all annual deficits, minus any surpluses. Politicians talk about deficits and the debt all the time. But how to get politicians to come to some agreement to get the debt clock to slow down, or even tick back the other way, continues to be a challenge.

RedState Morning Briefing
For December 19, 2012
1. Bull----
An old joke, long attributed to Winston Churchill goes like this. Churchill asked a famous British socialite, "Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?"
"My goodness, Mr. Churchill. Well, I suppose we would have to discuss terms, of course," the socialite replied.
Churchill then asked, "Would you sleep with me for five pounds?" at which the socialite angrily responded, "Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?"
Winston Churchill calmly replied, "Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price."
That story describes what John Boehner is doing to his own Republican Conference. Boehner wants to establish that the GOP will support tax hikes and decoupling, then he will come back and negotiate the actual deal. When we protest that it's a tax hike, he will point to this vote and say, "Excuse me?"
Most pathetically, too many conservatives in the House of Representatives are signaling exactly just what sort of women they are.
I can only guess that the "B" in John Boehner's plan be stands for bovine excrement. He should be ashamed at the lack of seriousness of his plan.
Conservatives in Congress should back away from it.
The nation deserves a laugh this week and John Boehner's Plan B should be the punch line.
2. Republicans Must Retreat, Not Surrender, on the Fiscal Cliff Note from Erick: lest it ever be said that RedState's front page has homogenous conformity, here is Dan McLaughlin's take on the Fiscal Cliff. It's time for John Boehner and the House and Senate Republicans now engaged in the fiscal cliff negotiations to learn a lesson from George Washington: when faced with fighting a losing battle, the wisest course is to retreat rather than surrender. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 3. The Return Of The Scary Gun Ban. 2012 Edition. In the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut the usual suspects, including our president, have made noises about renewing the ban on assault weapons. This ban was a truly bad idea when it was first imposed under the equally feckless Bill Clinton in 1994 as the Orwellian named Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act. Why was it a bad idea? Because no one knows what constitutes an assault weapon other than it is scary looking. Back in 2004, when the first assault weapons ban had lapsed and Senator Dianne Feinstein was trying to generate interest in its extension, I wrote a post on it called Return of the Scary Gun Ban. In it I laid out the reasons why the assault weapons ban was a ban on aesthetics and did nothing to reduce the presence of the weapons it targeted. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 4. With Apologies to Governor Haley, Congressman Scott, and the South Carolina Press Yesterday morning I made a dumb and careless mistake. On Monday, at 11:20 a.m., about 40 minutes before the official announcement, Governor Haley and Congressmen Scott called me to give me an advanced notice of the announcement and let me ask questions.

Israel Flying Aid Gives Food, Generators, Gas To Hurricane Sandy New York, New Jersey Victims
 | Roger Parrott, Jacob Parrott and Joel Leyden deliver a generator and gas to a Hurricane Sandy New York victim. |
By Karen Levy Israel News Agency
New York, NY --- November 4, 2012 ... Israel Flying Aid, the Israeli global humanitarian organization which was first to land in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, has been distributing large supplies of gas to hospitals, food, batteries and generators to Hurricane Sandy victims.
"We have many years of disaster relief experience," said Israel Flying Aid North American Operations Manager Moti Kahana. "Israel Flying Aid, in having Israelis on the ground here in New York and New Jersey, have made Israel the only foreign nation to provide humanitarian assistance to the US during this disaster. We are working in coordination with FEMA, local police, the American Red Cross and Jewish communities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut."
Kahana said that most of the efforts had been donated by Israelis living in the US and this enabled gas to be distributed to hospitals in New York and New Jersey.
Israel Flying Aid is one of several Israeli organizations that operate under IsraAid.
Since its creation in 2001, IsraAID has coordinated and facilitated aid programs all over the world, notably: relief to cyclone victims in Myanmar, long term aid programs for starving communities in Malawi, rehabilitation and relief in South East Asia following the devastating tsunami, psycho-social programs for Darfur refugees on the Chad-Sudan border, and aid to Somali war refugees in Kenya, as well as many more.

The numbers don't lie: banning guns means more crime; more innocent victims and the Left knows it
Dec 18, 2012 05:13 am | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
As threaten as the Second Amendment looks right now, in the end new attacks on our freedom to own guns will fail. The numbers will once again prove the Left's arguments are built on lies and distortions.
In the coming weeks disingenuous liberals will try to use the tragic murders of 20 children and 6 staff at a Connecticut grade school to justify curtailing our Second Amendment rights to own firearms. That this horrific crime was committed by a likely paranoid schizophrenic will mean nothing to the gun grabbers. That the ACLU recently defeated a Connecticut law which might have involuntarily put the monster that killed these innocent victims in an institution safely away from the rest of us, will mean nothing to them either.
In knee jerk fashion they will claim anyone who does not want to limit Second Amendment rights must be in favor of killing innocent children ... Continue Reading:The numbers don't lie: banning guns means more crime; more innocent victims and the Left knows it

Obama's Jewish supporters of Israel ought to watch the Hagel nomination very carefully
Dec 17, 2012 01:00 pm | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
Throughout the recent presidential campaign people like Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ira Forman had to work overtime to cover up Barack Obama's hostility toward Israel. They knew their co-religionists were weary of supporting a man who had so often actually gone out of his way to show his contempt for the Jewish State - only democracy in the Middle East. There was the sharp snub of Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Obama's cozy relationship with Black clergy who at times foamed at their mouth with open hatred for Israel.
Now that he is safely reelected Obama has done nothing to allay the fears of his Jewish supporters that he has not changed his stance toward Israel one bit. The latest affront to liberal Jewish sensibilities is the news that the frontrunner for appointment as Obama's new Secretary of Defense is former Nebraska Republican Senator Chuck Hagel.
Hagel has called ... Continue Reading:Obama's Jewish supporters of Israel ought to watch the Hagel nomination very carefully

Obama doubles down on the Muslim Brotherhood
Posted: 18 Dec 2012 03:05 PM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
The Muslim Brotherhood is a virulently anti-Western Islamist outfit committed to the destruction of Israel. Its history of engaging in and supporting terrorism is beyond dispute.
President Obama backs the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. He backed it, for example, when the military tried to stand up against Mohamed Morsi, the Brotherhood man who heads the Egyptian government, and when he made Morsi look like the hero of Hamas' recent mini-victory over Israel.
But in backing Morsi, Obama can claim that he is simply recognizing the reality that Morsi is the elected leader of Egypt. It's a weak argument because, elected or not, Morsi is an anti-western, anti-Israeli Islamist whose intentions are malicious. We don't have to back our enemies just because they win elections. Heck, Obama sees no need to back our friends on this basis. Just ask Benjamin Netanyahu.
In any event, we now learn (from Jonathan Spyer, via Barry Rubin) that Obama has decided to back the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. Here, we aren't talking about backing an elected government; rather, the issue is which rebel group to support.
As Spyer shows, Obama's "intention is to align with and strengthen Muslim Brotherhood-associated elements, while painting Salafi forces as the sole real Islamist danger." Meanwhile, "secular forces are ignored or brushed aside."
Spyer ponts to the new military council that Obama is backing:
The founder of the Free Syrian Army, the secular former Syrian Air Force Colonel Riad Asaad, is notably absent. General Mustafa al-Sheikh, the first of his rank to defect to the rebels, is also not there. Sheikh is known for his fierce opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood. Hussein Haj Ali, the highest ranking officer to defect so far, was similarly absent.
A Reuters report on the new joint military council calculated that the Muslim Brotherhood and their allies account for about two thirds of the 263 men who met in Antaliya and formed the new body. Salafi commanders are also there.
The new council is headed by Brigadier Selim Idriss, who is described as a non-ideological military man. But his deputies, Abdel-basset Tawil of Idleb and Abdel-qader Saleh of Aleppo governate are associated with the Salafi trend.
The same picture emerges from an anlysis of the new civilian leadership body - the Syrian National Coalition:
The leader of this coalition is Ahmed Mouaz al-Khatib, former Imam of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. Khatib is closely associated with the Damascus Branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.
The leader of the new coalition has a long history of antisemitic, anti-western and anti-Shia remarks (he praised Saddam Hussein, for example, for 'terrifying the Jews' and wrote an article asking if Facebook was an 'American-Israeli intelligence website.') He is also an admirer of the Qatar-based Muslim Brotherhood preacher Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi.
Within the body headed by Khatib, the Muslim Brotherhood dominated Syrian National Council controls around 27 of the 65 seats on the executive body of the new coalition. There are also Islamists and fellow travelers among the non-SNC delegates. The Brotherhood are by far the best organized single body within the coalition. One secular delegate at the first full meeting of the coalition accused the MB of "pushing more of its hawks into the coalition, although it already has half of the seats."
In sum, the Obama administration is now backing a Muslim Brotherhood-dominated coalition as the preferred replacement for the Assad regime.
The excuse will be that the alternative is the al-Qaeda linked Jabhat al-Nusra organization. But Spyer insists that "the difference between [al-Nusra] and the Muslim Brotherhood affiliated groups is one of degree, not of kind." The "home grown, Muslim Brotherhood elements that the US is backing are no less anti-western and no less anti-Jewish," he adds. Nor is it clear that the U.S. had no other alternatives.
In this regard, we should keep in mind that the Syrian incarnation of the Muslim Brotherhood is even more militant than its counterparts elsewhere in the Middle East, according to Glenn Robinson, an associate professor at the U.S. Naval Academy graduate school writing in the December issue of Current History. In this sense, Obama's play in Syria amounts to more than a doubling down on the Brotherhood.
The bottom line, says Barry Rubin, is that if the Obama-backed group is Syria's new government, then Syria now has an Islamist regime. And that, it now seems clear, is fine with Obama.

A word from Stephen Hunter

(Scott Johnson)
Stephen Hunter is the Pulitzer Prize-winning former film critic of the Washington Post and author of the Bob Lee Swagger series of novels, whose latest entrant - The Third Bullet - is forthcoming next month. Steve writes to comment with respect to the Newtown massacre:
It seems odd that in the orgy of recrimination, faux solemnity and glycerine tears of the past few days on the issue of "What can we do?" no one has mentioned something that is A.) Immediate, B) Cheap and C) Bound to be effective and at the least, D) Certainly worth trying. That is if the New York Times, the Washington Post, People Magazine, NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox-Big Media, USA- were to announce, jointly, the following voluntary policy: "As of January 1, 2013, we will not publish or broadcast the name, photograph or background of anyone who attempts or commits a mass murderer of the active shooter variety. Further, we will work within our professional culture to 'enforce' this rule until it becomes a cultural norm. Names of killers will only be acknowledged at the time of adjudication or the issuance of a posthumous investigative finding."
No, you can't keep the name and identity secret in this time of Internet and text, but you can certainly change the culture so that the killer doesn't become a week-long rock star under the auspices of corporate media 24/7 overkill. It's time for the media to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Can Boehner Turn the Tables?
Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:59 PM PST
(Steven Hayward)
I received a lot of disagreement for my post over the weekend defending Speaker Boehner, and I understand the frustration. But I maintain my ground that taking out our frustrations on him is not simply unfair but probably imprudent, too, for reasons that may just now be coming into focus. I can see that I may need to book space in brother Mirengoff's bunker where he had to flee after defending Mike Castle over Christine O'Donnell in the 2010 Delaware Senate race.
Here's the problem: it is foolish to suppose that a more "dynamic" or "principled" Speaker would be sufficient to turn around the fiscal cliff debate of the present moment. This impulse both overestimates the power of-and underestimates the difficulty of-political rhetoric in the short term. The contours of the present losing hand the GOP holds were set months ago, when Romney and the rest of the Republican Party leadership failed to contest Obama effectively on the issue of taxes and "fairness." Dumping Boehner now is like saying the Jets, down three touchdowns with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter, should now switch to Tim Tebow and the wildcat offense to try to pull it out of the fire. Demanding that Boehner and House Republicans go down with guns blazing and refusing any tax increase in order to protect the Republican "no-tax" brand is to turn away from how a tactical retreat may prepare the ground for larger victories ahead. The GOP isn't going to lose its brand ID because it accedes to a tax increase on millionaires under these circumstances. This is not the same as 1990, when the first President Bush botched the budget deal. The public knows which party is, and which party isn't, driving this mess.
We've been among the many voices urging the House GOP to seize the initiative by passing something-Simpson-Bowles, anything-to force Obama's hand. Now, as Paul noted earlier today, it appears Boehner is ready to do so with his "Plan B." It may turn out that Boehner's patience will be rewarded: having offered a grudging concession on taxes, we are starting to see that Democrats are fracturing over any serious spending cuts. If Obama can't deliver Democrats, it will shatter the media meme that Republicans are the obstacle to any deal, and Democrats will suddenly become the final cause of going over the fiscal cliff.
No, this is far from ideal. Ideal would have been winning the election. Or at least a Senate majority to join the House majority. Failing this, Boehner is playing his bad hand as best as might be hoped with surviving to win the next hand in mind.
I'd like to draw everyone's attention once again to something Harvey Mansfield said in his recent Wall Street Journal interview:
Conservatives should be the party of good judgment, not just of principles. Of course there are conservative principles-free markets, family values, a strong national defense-but those principles must be defended with good judgment. Conservatives need to be intelligent, and they shouldn't use their principles as substitutes for intelligence. Principles need to be there so judgment can be distinguished from opportunism. But just because you give ground on principle doesn't mean you're an opportunist.

Chuck Hagel, the antithesis to the Obama thesis of liberal Jews
Posted: 18 Dec 2012 09:34 AM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
Last week, I asked: If Obama nominates Hagel, will that make Jews who worry about Iran but voted for Obama useful idiots? After all, Hagel voted against designating Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps as a terrorist organization; urged President Bush to open "direct, unconditional" talks with Iran to create "a historic new dynamic in U.S.-Iran relations;" was a reliable "no" vote on sanctions against Iran; and serves on the board of directors of Deutsche Bank, which is reportedly being probed by U.S. authorities for possible violations of the very kinds of sanctions Hagel opposed when he was in Congress.
Alana Goodman adds another dimension to the "useful idiot" question. She reminds us that Obama supporters in the pro-Israel community took pains during the election to assure us that Obama was serious about using military force against Iran, if need be. Thus Alan Dershowitz said in the Jerusalem Post:
There are some, in both parties, who wrongly believe that a policy of "containment" - that is, allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons but containing their use by the threat of tit-for-tat reprisal - is the right strategy. President Obama has explicitly rejected this benighted approach and has instead announced that his policy is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it takes military action to do so. In the meantime, he has ratcheted up sanctions and diplomatic pressure while explicitly keeping the military option on the table.
Several months ago, President Obama invited me to the Oval Office to discuss his Iran strategy. He looked me in the eye and said, "I don't bluff." His actions with regard to Osama bin Laden and the Somali pirates who endangered Americans and threatened to kill them demonstrated his willingness to use force when warranted. So does his increased use of drones to target terrorists who are beyond the reach of capture. I believe President Obama when he says that Iran will not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons on his watch.
Similarly, Jeffery Goldberg wrote in the Atlantic:
I run into people constantly who believe that the bluffer in this relationship is Obama. Their argument holds that Obama will move toward a strategy of containment soon after the election, and that there is no way he would ever use military force to prevent Iran from getting the bomb.
I'm in the camp of people, however, who take him at his word, in part because he's repeated himself on the subject so many times and in part because he has laid out such an effective argument against containment and for disruption, by force, if necessary.
But, as Goodman shows, Hagel strongly opposes using force against Iran:
I do not expect any kind of military solution on the Iran issue. I think to further comment on it would be complete speculation, but I would say that a military strike against Iran, a military option, is not a viable, feasible, responsible option.
In fact, Hagel opposes talking about using force against Iran, even as a bluff:
I think talking about going to war with Iran in fairly specific terms should be carefully reviewed. And that's pretty dangerous talk. It's easy to get a nation into war; not so easy to get a nation out of war, as we are finding out.
If Obama nominates Hagel as his Secretary of Defense, it will be a slap in the face for Dershowitz, Goldberg, and many other liberal American Jews. But that, or worse, is what normally happens to useful idiots.

Sandy Hook: The Corrections Begin
Posted: 18 Dec 2012 09:29 AM PST
(John Hinderaker)
I noted here that the news media's performance on the Sandy Hook elementary school murders has been terrible, with news outlets committing one factual error after another. Yet in all the calls for "soul searching" that have followed Adam Lanza's rampage, I haven't seen a single one suggesting that reporters and editors should reflect on their own conduct, either in publicizing (and thereby encouraging) mass murderers like Lanza, or in making sure they have their facts straight before going public with information.
So it will be interesting to watch media outlets issue corrections to their Sandy Hook coverage over the coming days. This morning the New York Times published a series of corrections to its Sandy Hook coverage:
* An article on Saturday about the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 children and 8 adults dead, using information from the authorities, misstated the way in which the gunman managed to enter the Sandy Hook Elementary School. The gunman, Adam Lanza, shot his way in, defeating the security system that required visitors to be buzzed in; the school's principal did not allow him to go through the security system after recognizing him. The article also referred incorrectly to the gunman's mother, Nancy, whom he killed in the house they shared not far from the school. She was never a teacher at the school.
* An article on Sunday about the way in which the gunman in the Connecticut school shooting blasted his way into the building on Friday and shot his victims multiple times misstated, in some editions, the caliber of two handguns found at the school. The guns were a 10-millimeter Glock and a 9-millimeter Sig Sauer - not .10-millimeter and .9-millimeter.
* An article on Monday about President Obama's remarks at a memorial service in Newtown, Conn., for shooting victims quoted incorrectly from comments by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York, who criticized Mr. Obama for inaction on gun control. Mr. Bloomberg, appearing on the NBC program "Meet the Press," said that if Mr. Obama "does nothing during his second term something like 48,000 Americans will be killed with illegal guns." He did not say that is the number that would be killed in the next year.
* An article in the New York pages on Monday about past resistance to tightening gun rules in Newtown, Conn., misspelled the surname of an owner of a gun range on High Rock Road. He is Scott Ostrosky, not Ostrovsky.
The first correction relates to two garden-variety factual errors. The assertion that Nancy Lanza was a teacher at Sandy Hook, and that she had been shot there, was a staple of the early coverage by nearly every news outlet.
The second correction reflects the ignorance of firearms, and mathematics, that dogs "mainstream" reporting on gun issues. Have the Times's reporters and editors seriously never heard of a 9 millimeter pistol? And do they really not understand how microscopic a .9 millimeter bullet would be? When people know so little about firearms, how do they presume to lecture the rest of us on public policy relating to guns?
The third item corrects the newspaper's misquotation of Michael Bloomberg, New York's busybody mayor. What Bloomberg actually said was that in the next four years-not the next one year-"48,000 Americans will be killed with illegal guns." But Bloomberg's statement, quoted correctly, is wrong. FBI statistics indicate that in 2010, there were 8,775 homicides using firearms, not 12,000, and the number is steadily dropping. Moreover, that is the total number of homicides that involve all guns, not "illegal guns." There are very few illegal guns-i.e., guns which it is illegal to sell-in the United States. Bloomberg makes clear what he actually means on his web site, where he says:
...12,000 innocent people killed each year with guns, many of them possessed illegally.
During the next President's term, if we do nothing, 48,000 people will be murdered with guns....
So when Bloomberg said on Meet the Press that "48,000 Americans will be killed with illegal guns," he both got the number wrong and gratuitously inserted the reference to "illegal" guns. I have seen no data on the number of homicides involving guns that are possessed illegally.
It is noteworthy that the rate of homicides that involve guns moves with the murder rate generally. Between 2006 and 2010, FBI data indicate that the number of homicides committed with firearms declined by 14%. Over the same time period, homicides in which the weapon was a blunt instrument declined by 13%; homicides in which the weapon was a knife declined by 7%; and homicides in which no weapon was used (i.e., fists) declined by 11%. This suggests that rather than talking about reducing gun violence, we should focus on reducing violence, period. Whatever factors have been reducing the murder rate in recent years apply to gun violence just as they do to other forms of homicide.
In the wake of Sandy Hook, much attention, all of it negative, has been focused on the Bushmaster rifle that Adam Lanza apparently used to commit his murders (news accounts on this point have varied over time). The rifle is commonly, if meaninglessly, referred to as an "assault weapon." But homicides using rifles of any sort are rare, as well as declining. In 2010 there were only 358 homicides involving rifles, compared with 1,704 in which knives were used, 540 that involved blunt objects, and 745 in which the victims were simply beaten to death. So the idea that there is some kind of epidemic of violence involving semiautomatic rifles, or any other sort of rifle, is nonsense.
As for the Times's story on guns in Newtown that was published on Sunday and was the source of today's final correction, I suspect there was more amiss than the spelling of Scott Ostrosky's name. The article says:
The owner of one, Scott Ostrosky, said he and his friends had been shooting automatic weapons since he bought the 23-acre property more than 12 years ago. It is safe, he said, because his land is sandwiched between two other gun ranges, the 123-acre Pequot hunting club and the 500-acre Fairfield club.
It is possible that Ostrosky and his friends own automatic weapons. They could have filled out this form and gotten permission from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to buy automatic weapons, based on a showing that they had a "reasonable necessity to possess the machinegun, short-barreled rifle, short-barreled shotgun, or destructive device described on this application" and on an endorsement from local law enforcement, or they might have obtained automatic weapons illegally or in some other fashion. But I seriously doubt it.
Be that as it may, my guess is that more corrections are yet to come.
PAUL ADDS: John is spot on about this. I should add, however, that Charles Lane of the Washington Post took the media to task for its atrocious Sandy Hook coverage in an op-ed published this morning. In the print edition the op-ed is called "Rapid-fire falsehoods."

NEW ON PJ MEDIA |
The incident in Newtown was precipitated by a deranged individual and not an organized terrorist group. Yet it illustrates the vulnerability of our schools. Imagine that you have not a deranged twenty-year-old but a group of well-trained terrorists who are prepared to withstand a siege. Think your feel-good petitions for more gun control will stop it?
Roger L. Simon, the co-founder and CEO of PJ Media and a veteran screenwriter and director, and his wife Sheryl Longin, a screenwriter herself, stop by to discuss their latest joint effort: The Party Line, the published script to their new play. "The Party Line" contrasts the lives of Walter Duranty, the New York Times' man in Moscow in the 1930s, when the Soviet Union was thought by many intellectuals to be "the future" of mankind, to Pim Fortuyn, who confronted a different kind of religious fervor in Holland -- before being assassinated in 2002. |
TOP STORIES ON PJ MEDIA |
In this age of Obama and a corrupting equality of result, we must continue to speak out, with dash and style, with the knowledge that most of our peers prefer sameness and mandated equality to freedom and liberty, if the latter result in inequality. But at least we are not alone, the best of the ancient world nods with us.
While sudden global catastrophe is no more likely on December 21st than any other day, take the proposition of a cultural apocalypse very seriously. Moral authority remains a powerful thing, and a people who believe that your claim to individual rights hinders their conscious evolution will tread you under with glee. |

Sen. Manchin Stonewalls on Gun Control: 'Honey ... I'm Not Talking to You Anymore' |
|
by Kerry Picket
Senator Joe Manchin (D - WV) appears to have changed his tune on the second amendment. The Democratic Senator who received an "A" rating from the NRA appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Monday to discuss the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
In the wake of the tragedy, Democrats are calling to pass the Assault Weapons Ban. When asked by Breitbart News, Manchin disagreed that his remarks on MSNBC show his stance on the second amendment have flipped. "I didn't change my mind on anything. I think everything is open for discussion." It should be noted that Manchin, also known for breaking campaign promises on tax hikes, may have a difficult time explaining his turnaround on guns to voters in his own state. West Virginia, a state President Obama lost in 2008 and 2012, has one of the highest rate of gun ownership in the country: 55 percent own guns.

The Left's Ongoing Assault on Election Integrity
This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published December 14, 2012 on The Washington Times website.
If you think the left is resting on its laurels after Barack Obama's re-election and the Democrats' retention of the U.S. Senate, think again.
Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., who halted photo ID laws in South Carolina and Texas before the November election, suggested on Tuesday in Boston that the United States should consider adopting "automatic" voter registration. This essentially would mean that millions of people who sign up for government benefits but don't bother to register to vote will be given the franchise. Think of it as Motor Voter on crack cocaine.

Appeals Court Oral Arguments Signal Trouble for Obamacare HHS Mandate
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published on December 15, 2012 on Breitbart.com.
A top federal appeals court signaled Friday that it might act on Obamacare's HHS Mandate--requiring employers to cover birth control and abortion-related services.
After repeated assurances that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would not mandate abortion or people of faith violating their religious beliefs, the Obama administration issued a mandate requiring both, when Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued a rule from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) saying that a vague provision in the ACA requiring employers provide "preventive care" means that employer healthcare policies must cover birth control, abortion-related, and sterilization services.

ACRU Brief Supports Arizona's Citizenship Law for Voting in Federal Elections
December 14 (Alexandria, VA) - The American Civil Rights Union filed a brief today with the United States Supreme Court in Arizona v. The Intertribal Council of Arizona in support of Arizona's Proposition 200, which requires prospective voters to provide satisfactory evidence of citizenship to register to vote. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a District Court ruling upholding that state law, concluding that federal election law preempts Proposition 200 in regard to federal elections. "While states continue to move forward in preventing voter fraud by passing Voter ID laws, purging deceased voters from their rolls and blocking non-citizens from casting ballots, liberal groups and activists judges continue to weaken voter integrity," said Susan Carleson, chairman of the ACRU and a leading opponent of vote fraud.

Our Government-Created Financial Crisis
This column by ACRU Policy Board Member and Professor of Economics Dr. Walter E. Williams was published December 12, 2012 on Townhall.com. Suppose you saw a building on fire. Would you seek counsel from the arsonist who set it ablaze for advice on how to put it out? You say, "Williams, you'd have to be a lunatic to do that!" But that's precisely what we've done: turned to the people who created our fiscal crisis to fix it. I have never read a better account of our doing just that than in John A. Allison's new book, The Financial Crisis and the Free Market Cure. Allison is the former CEO of Branch Banking and Trust, the nation's 10th largest bank. He assembles evidence that shows that our financial crisis, followed by the Great Recession, was caused by Congress, the Federal Reserve, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and was helped along by the Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama White Houses.

Replacing Speaker Boehner
This column by ACRU General Counsel and Senior Fellow for the Carleson Center for Public Policy (CCPP) Peter Ferrara was published December 12, 2012 on The American Spectator website. John Boehner is a good man in a hard place. He has served in public office as a lifelong conservative, not a RINO. His position on the Obama tax increases has been better than almost any other Republican who has been speaking out lately, given the Obama/Democrat election victories -- close loopholes and deductions for $800 billion in new revenue over a decade, but no increases in rates. But face it. Boehner is no match for Obama on the national stage. He cannot press the economic arguments articulately. He does not have a compelling personality. Obama is running circles around Boehner with outrageous falsehoods, and Boehner cannot raise a peep to challenge him. Boehner has managed to allow Obama to turn the Bush middle class tax cuts, passed by a Republican majority Congress over 10 years ago, into the Obama middle class tax cuts, supposedly opposed by the House majority Republicans.

Seventh Circuit Rules in NRA's Favor in Illinois Gun Law Case
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published on December 5, 2012 on Breitbart.com. The National Rifle Association just won a major court case in Chicago, providing a huge victory for Second Amendment proponents and gun owners. Illinois is one of the most anti-gun states in America. Its hostility toward the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms is demonstrated in a state law that forbids the carrying of firearms outside the home. There are narrow exceptions for classes of persons such as police officers, or under restrictions that keep the firearm from being readily usable, such as being kept unloaded in a locked case.

Supreme Court Takes Case on Same Sex Marriage, DOMA
This column by ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski was published on December 7, 2012 on Breitbart.com. The Supreme Court of the United States announced Friday it would decide two cases involving same-sex marriage and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). By next July, the Court will rule on the government's role in marriage both in the states and at the federal level. The justices granted a writ of certiorari in two of the eleven marriage cases pending before the High Court. One is Hollingsworth v. Perry, which asks the question of whether the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution contained an implied fundamental right to gay marriage, such that no state may define marriage as the union of one man and one woman and all laws to that effect are unconstitutional.

Morning Jolt - December 18, 2012
By Jim Geraghty
Here's your Tuesday Morning Jolt.
Enjoy!
Jim
Great Scott!
Flanked by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham and U.S. Senator Jim DeMint -- as well as U.S. Representatives Joe Wilson, Trey Gowdy, Mick Mulvaney, (S.C., 05) and U.S. Representative-elect Tom Rice, Governor Nikki Haley announced that Representative Tim Scott would be the state's next senator as Scott's mother, Frances Scott, looked on. Video of the announcement can be seen here.
Governor Haley said, "What we looked for in a new senator is a fighter -- someone with courage and leadership for our state and nation at a time when we need it most, and someone who understands South Carolina's issues and knows her people. That's what we found in Tim Scott. It's a great honor for me to appoint Tim as our next U.S. senator. . . . Tim Scott has proven himself time after time. His life story is a great South Carolina story, filled with the difficulties and the successes that are familiar to so many of our citizens."
"I am deeply honored to accept Governor Nikki Haley's appointment as United States Senator," said Representative Scott. "As much as there is honor in such an occasion, I am even more humbled at the confidence she has shown in me, and at the task that is now before me. Representing the entire state of South Carolina and all of its citizens is a sacred duty. I look to the Lord's grace to give me the strength and wisdom to fulfill that duty in a way that reflects well on our state and our country."
Glenn Reynolds: "So with Tim Scott's appointment, the GOP has the nation's only black senator and both of its two Latino governors. Kinda busts the racial narrative, doesn't it?"
Not only that, but he was appointed to the position by the country's second Indian-American governor; both of the ones we have are not only Republicans, but Southern conservative Republicans.
The editors of the Wall Street Journal notice: "Mr. Scott's appointment requires him to stand for a special election in 2014, though he has a record as a House conservative in sync with Palmetto State values and emerged with the Tea Party. It's also worth noting that the movement deplored by liberals as retrogressive has done more than anything in years to increase diversity in politics-and not merely of thought. Think Marco Rubio of Florida, Ted Cruz of Texas, Susana Martinez of New Mexico, Brian Sandoval of Nevada, Ms. Haley herself. The best news is that Senator-designate Scott's story isn't about racial grievance and preference. It's a measure of personal achievement, political conviction and the opportunities available in modern American politics."
And guess who could be making a comeback in the House race to replace Scott?
Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is mulling a congressional comeback, with sources saying he might join the special election contest for Rep. Tim Scott's soon-to-be-vacant House seat.
Sanford is "studying" a run for the Charleston-area, GOP-leaning 1st District, which he occupied in the 1990s, said one South Carolina source. The seat will soon be vacant because Republican Gov. Nikki R. Haley on Monday selected freshman Republican Scott to succeed Sen. Jim DeMint, who is resigning in January, just two years into his second term. Sanford has about $124,000 in his old federal campaign account.
I can think of no better candidate to lead Congress in strengthening relations between the U.S. and Argentina.
Senator Daniel Inouye, RIP
USA Today: "Democrat Daniel Inouye, the U.S. Senate's most senior member and a Medal of Honor recipient for his bravery during World War II, has died. He was 88. He died of respiratory complications and had been at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since earlier this month. His office said his last word was "Aloha," the traditional Hawaiian word for 'hello' and 'goodbye.'"
In Hawaii, Inouye's replacement will be appointed by Governor Neil Abercrombie. Under state law, the governor's appointee must be of the same political party as that of the vacating senator; the governor makes an appointment by selecting from a list of three prospective appointees submitted by the state party. Inouye was reelected in 2010, so the Hawaii elections will work a bit like the setup in South Carolina with Senator Jim DeMint's departure: A special Senate election will be held in 2014 where the appointee may choose to run; whoever wins that election will serve another two years and face reelection for a full six-year term in 2016.
Still Struggling to Find Some Way to Prevent Another Newtown
I figured some of my Second Amendment supporting friends wouldn't agree with my comments yesterday, suggesting that it may be time to examine a ban on high-capacity magazines (which I erroneously referred to as clips a few times). Most were pretty respectful, although the first response came from a reader who argued that the Newtown massacre had somehow been organized by the Obama administration to advance an agenda of disarming American citizens. Sigh.
Some noted that there are already quite a few high-capacity magazines out on the market, so banning the manufacture and sale would only stop adding to the ones currently in circulation. A national effort to seize and destroy all existing ones is pretty unthinkable and impossible to enforce. The question is whether a ban on additional manufacture or sales would make it sufficiently more difficult for the next aspiring mass murderer to obtain one. I'll bring some humility to this debate and say that I don't know and I'm not sure we can know.
Others asked what the purpose is of banning high-capacity magazines if a gunman can still obtain two or more guns. In these horrific circumstances, one of the few limits on the gunman's ability to kill is how many rounds he can fire until he is forced to pause to reload. My argument is that without high-capacity magazines, that pause comes quicker. Those five or seven or nine or more extra shots fired could, and probably would, make a difference in the number of victims.
It was argued that the primary effect of a ban on new high-capacity magazines would be to make the existing ones more expensive. Yes, but that too can be a deterrent, particularly to the high-school or early-20s aged males who seem to be the primary perpetrators of these attacks. Perhaps we want the next aspiring mass murderer deterred by an inability to afford one.
Any proposed change of law that is spurred by the massacre must weigh the benefits to society and the costs as precisely as possible, and that goes well beyond any gun proposals.
As mentioned yesterday, if we determine that the problem stems from insufficient monitoring of people deemed by others to be mentally unstable, we have to contemplate whether we want state, local, or the federal government able to review our mental-health records. Perhaps if you've never seen a therapist, a psychologist, or a psychiatrist, that doesn't sound so bad, but it would amount to shattering doctor-patient confidentiality, a concept that goes back to the Hippocratic Oath. Those in the mental-health profession are supposed to warn authorities if their patients indicate that they are going to harm themselves or others. The "let's ramp up our public mental-health efforts" talk amounts to letting the government decide when it needs to intervene, instead of the psychiatric professionals. If you think troubled people are reluctant to get help in the current cultural environment, just wait until after people start getting involuntarily committed because of what the government found in their psychiatrists' notes and records.
I'm extremely skeptical of the notion that violent video games are a leading cause of mass shootings, although some people I respect greatly disagree with me. The simplest summary of my argument would be that if 99.999 percent of a product's users don't go on shooting sprees, it can't really be called the spree's "cause" -- a conclusion that can be applied to firearms to video games to television and movies to medication . . . or, admittedly, high-capacity magazines. Even if we presume that a ban on violent video games could be considered constitutional and not an abridgement of First Amendment rights, a ban would infringe upon the lives of about a million non-spree-shooters to inhibit the actions of one potential spree shooter.
It's interesting to hear this discussion periodically shift to criminals' access to guns, since I don't think what spurred this discussion really falls into the category of crime as we traditionally think of it. Few Americans live in fear of garden-variety criminals anymore (at least compared to a generation ago). Criminals may be scum, but most of them don't set out to kill their victims in the course of their muggings, home invasions, drug deals, etc. The vast majority of them are greedy and brutal, but they're not demonic enough to set out to slaughter kindergarteners.
What we're dealing with after Columbine and Virginia Tech and Aurora and Newtown are perhaps better thought of as one-man terror groups. The parallels to suicide bombers are a bit eerie, when one thinks about it; they're young males with few if any close, loving connections to other people; they have a message they want to send to the world; they often leave manifestos and literal messages to be found after their passing; and they kill as many others as they can in the process of killing themselves.
ADDENDUM: I think Exurban Jon speaks for us all: "I really should attract a better class of trolls."

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer
Obama Counteroffers Tis the season for giving, and President Obama and Speaker John Boehner have been exchanging offers on the fiscal cliff, giving the rest of us headaches. Over the weekend, Speaker Boehner conceded to raising tax rates, but only on those making more than $1 million. Yesterday Obama made a counteroffer. Instead of raising the top two rates, which would hit small business owners earning $250,000, Obama now appears willing to accept an increase on just the top 35% bracket alone. That would essentially limit Obama's tax increase to those making $400,000 and up. But Obama's counteroffer still had a lot of strings attached like an automatic two-year increase in the debt limit and more spending. In response, Speaker Boehner said, "What the White House offered yesterday -- $1.3 trillion in revenue for only $850 billion in spending cuts -- cannot be considered balanced. We're going to keep the door open in hopes the president can find a way to support a balanced approach." Plan B With just 13 days left until the end of the year, Speaker Boehner has decided it is time to put members of Congress on the record. His plan to allow higher taxes only on millionaires will be up for a vote on the House floor later this week. This morning Boehner said, "Taxes are going up on everyone on Jan. 1. They're baked into current law. And we have to stop whatever tax rate increases we can." It will be interesting to see whether Democrats will support Boehner's "Plan B." The idea was initially proposed by Nancy Pelosi in May. Back then Pelosi agreed with Speaker Boehner that "we should not be raising taxes on middle-income people at this delicate time in our recovery from the worst recession in 70 years." We will find out soon whether she and her fellow Democrats still feel that way. An Anti-Israel Secretary Of Defense? As Barack Obama prepares to reshuffle his cabinet for his second term, there is growing concern about the leading candidate to replace to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. According to various reports, former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel is the frontrunner. Obama likes the idea of appointing Hagel because it gives him a fig leaf of bi-partisanship. The Huffington Post described Hagel as a "moderate Republican," who became a "fierce critic" of President Bush's war policies. Hagel opposed sending reinforcements to Iraq, and blasted the surge as "the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam." So on one of the most important military decisions in recent memory, Hagel was dead wrong. Of course, Obama would not appoint anyone to such a critically important position unless that individual shared his policy views as well. And that has supporters of Israel on edge. During his time in the Senate, Chuck Hagel was soft on Iran and hostile to Israel. In 2001, Hagel was just one of two senators to oppose sanctions against Iran. In 2007, he opposed legislation labeling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist front. In 2009, he urged President Obama to begin direct talks with Hamas, another terrorist group. Our friends at The Weekly Standard have posted a fact sheet on Hagel's disturbing record. Hagel briefly flirted with the idea of running for president in 2008. At the time, I led a coalition of conservative leaders that interviewed potential presidential contenders. What stood out most was that Hagel's entire presentation to our group was an attack on Israel and a call to reorient our foreign policy toward the Muslim world. Throughout his time in the Senate, Hagel consistently opposed the idea of striking Iran's nuclear weapons facilities. There is nothing to suggest that he has changed his mind since he left the Senate in 2008. In fact, he currently serves on the board of a bank that is being investigated for violating trade sanctions imposed on Iran. Yet with each passing day, it becomes increasingly likely that the United States and Israel will have to confront Iran's nuclear ambitions or be confronted by a nuclear-armed Iran. That Hagel is under consideration to be the next Secretary of Defense strongly signals that Obama's approach will be four more years of appeasement and outreach to the tyrants in Tehran. U.N. Media finally noting horrific joblessness of Black Americans -- Time to tell Congress & Obama to stop making it worse with immigration
Will you please help us demand that Members of Congress and the President recognize that their proposals for more immigration must take into consideration how that might affect the prospects for jobs for our fellow citizens trapped in the nation's gigantic reservoirs of Black poverty?
Send a free fax that will go to your 2 Senators, your U.S. Representative and the President -- with one click. While the politicia ns and mass media clamor about the moral necessity of increasing immigration and providing a PATH TO CITIZENSHIP for millions of illegal aliens, they are totally ignoring how immigration is blocking the PATH OUT OF POVERTY for all of America's underclasses, especially for the descendants of our past slavery system.
Why faxes on this topic this week?
Because major media -- after ignoring the subject throughout the campaigns -- have finally been focusing on just how bad joblessness and poverty are for Black Americans. Here in Washington, the Post ran a startling front page story over the weekend. And in the opinion section, it ran long-time open- borders columnist Michael Gerson's touching op-ed, "The ignored plight of black males."
Two quick examples of how bad it is: Only half of working-age Black Americans with a high school degree have a job. Less than a third of those without a degree are working.

Reverse Road Map for Burma Sanctions By Walter Lohman
President Barack Obama's November visit to Burma showcased his Administration's approach to Burma. It is one of gentle persuasion and positive reinforcement, except for sanctions tightly targeted at specific individuals and entities. In the President's words, he seeks to extend a hand to an unclenching fist.
Whether encouraged by Administration outreach or not-and the Administration has presented developments in Burma as both-change is afoot. The Burmese government has undertaken a series of reforms at a pace no one anticipated just a few short years ago. Still, the U.S. needs a policy response that is more than lifting sanctions and setting broad objectives if it is to achieve its long-held, bipartisan goal of liberty for the Burmese people. There must be a clear downside for the regime if it falls short.
The Administration has repeatedly emphasized that reforms in Burma are not "irreversible." Congress should reinforce this by affirming precise criteria and tying failure of the Burmese regime to achieve them to re-imposition of the major sanctions already lifted. In so doing, Congress will reassert its traditional role in Burma policy.

From Administrative State to Constitutional Government
|
Bureaucracy, concentration of powers, and the erosion of the rule of law. The administrative state is our governing reality. This behemoth enables bureaucrats to overreach and cause profound damage with little accountability or public awareness. As a result, citizens find themselves at the mercy of government agencies and departments over which they have no control. Until now.
What is the Administrative State? Is there an alternative to regulatory leviathan? What can citizens and elected officials do now and in the future to tackle this challenge?

Limiting Government in the Age of Obama
|
In spite of the outcome of the 2012 election, Conservatives need not abandon their core project to restore limited constitutional government. Even in the age of Obama, there are still three major concrete avenues to push back against unlimited government: Congress, the Courts, and the States. Watch a panel of Heritage experts explain how.

Pardon Me? The President's Lack of Mercy
|
Barack Obama has pardoned 22 people and 5 turkeys during his time in office. George W. Bush was not much better: 200 people pardoned in eight years. This is a sharp decline from early 20th century Presidents who pardoned on average 200 people a year (number of turkeys unknown). Properly understood, the pardon power is one of the great bulwarks of individual liberty and a check on the institutions of the government. What accounts for the lack of mercy among modern presidents?

Tell Republicans Not to Cave on Taxes
|
On Friday, Speaker John Boehner reportedly made additional "concessions" to President Barack Obama. The plan is nothing short of surrender: a capitulation on taxes for vague reforms that will fail to make a dent in our nation's fiscal woes.
Call Now: Tell your Representative tax hikes are not acceptable.
Placing a $1 trillion tax increase on the table, Boehner is repudiating his previously held positions. Gone are the days when the Republicans' top negotiator believed "Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem."
Raising tax rates used to be considered "unacceptable." Not any more.
Equally as bad, reports suggest Speaker Boehner is willing to include an increase in the debt ceiling in the final fiscal cliff deal. In other words, he is offering to take the only mechanism capable of reining in reckless federal spending off the table for another year.
Call your Representatives. Now is not the time to raise the debt ceiling.
Congressional Republicans and their consultants believe raising taxes is simply a strategic retreat. Many of them think that if we just go along quietly, conservatives can fight on principle another day. They're wrong. Now is the time for action. Now is the time to fight. Now is the time to stand up to GOP leaders.
Thank you in advance for making the call and standing up for conservative principles.
Sincerely,
Russ Vought Political Director Heritage Action for America

GOP Leaders Capitulate on Core Conservative Principles
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Republican leaders have done it once again. Their latest fiscal cliff proposal capitulates on core conservative principles, yielding woefully inadequate concessions from President Obama in the process. Will they ever learn? The latest GOP offer essentially ignores Washington's real problem -- spending -- and puts a $1 trillion tax hike on the table. It's so bad that conservatives are now left with only one unfortunate alternative -- passing a temporary measure that avoids a doomsday scenario until the end of March. It's the best possible outcome with the days dwindling on the remainder of 2012. In a city where kicking the can has become a routine course of action, it's hardly the preferable outcome for lawmakers. But it would be better than just going over the fiscal cliff and better than the current $1 trillion tax increase offered by Boehner, which, not surprisingly, was summarily rejected by Obama, who proceeded to counteroffer with an even bigger tax hike and even fewer spending cuts. At this point, no "grand bargain" is going to result in the spending cuts that are needed to reduce the debt. Yesterday, Heritage's Alison Acosta Fraser outlined a few reasons why Boehner's latest proposal is just plain bad policy:
- Higher tax rates discourage all the activities that lead to a stronger economy. That's even something Obama acknowledged when he signed legislation preventing a similar tax hike two years ago.
- Dollar-for-dollar tax increases and spending cuts -- Boehner's plan -- won't fix what's broken. Spending cuts, not a $1 trillion tax hike, should be the GOP's focus.
- After two years of running the House, there's still no clear plan how Republicans would cut spending. Even as of this late date, they have provided few real guiding principles or details on spending reforms. It's the $800 billion question.
- Relinquishing control over the debt limit to Obama for a year would take away one of the only points of leverage for conservatives. It ensures no meaningful reforms will happen in 2013.
These factors make it clear that any deal this year will be a disaster. That's why Fraser recommends kicking the can until the end of March. This alternative is hardly ideal, but given the situation created by lawmakers, it's the best possible outcome for Americans. So why March 31? Heritage's J.D. Foster, the Norman B. Ture Senior Fellow in the Economics of Fiscal Policy, said it will give conservatives an opportunity to "live to fight another day" with better leverage at the negotiating table. Here's how the temporary plan would play out, according to Foster:
- The measure would postpone the dreaded fiscal cliff until next year, extending all tax rates and all spending policy without sequestration cuts.
- Legislation funding the federal government expires on March 31, meaning that Congress must act by that date to prevent a shutdown.
- The debt ceiling would increase, but only enough to allow the government to continue to operate until just after March 31. Congress would retain control of the debt limit.
- Some 28 million taxpayer would avoid paying the Alternative Minimum Tax. A patch for 2012 would save an average of $2,250 for those taxpayers.
- Doctors wouldn't face deep cuts for Medicare payments in January.
Let's be clear: Kicking the can is not the preferable outcome. But, sadly, it is better than the only available alternatives.

A Safe Route Down the Cliff
This fiscal cliff can be avoided. The key to avoiding it and future fiscal calamities is reforming mandatory spending programs, from welfare to Social Security, that drive federal deficits. Heritage has updated our signature reform plan, revealing how to come down from the fiscal cliff and plan for the long term.

Letting Tax Cuts Expire Will Not Balance Our National Budget Some call for letting all 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire, including subjecting the middle class to the alternative minimum tax, in order to balance the budget. Under this scenario, unaffordable spending would still rise, and economic growth and job creation would suffer. PERCENTAGE OF GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP) |

President Obama's plan to increase taxes primarily on "high-income earners" and small businesses will have devastating effects on the economy, according to a new report from The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis.
And now Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has introduced a plan that would raise income taxes on those making $1 million or more.
"Private-sector employment in the U.S. economy would fall by an average 1.1 million jobs (1 percent) per year" under the Obama plan, explain Heritage economists Bill Beach, John Ligon and Guinevere Nell. "And Americans would work 2 billion fewer hours."
Not only that, but the Obama tax hike wouldn't achieve it's intended effect of increasing revenue by $160 billion per year. Instead, it would generate only about $68 billion per year." This is due, the report notes, "to a smaller tax base commensurate with the smaller economy. For example, fewer hours worked and lower real wages result in less federal income and payroll tax receipts."
The Center for Data Analysis has developed a unique dynamic model that forecasts how policies like tax increases affect human behavior. Most models, including those used by the government, assume no such changes. For example, many official government projections fail to note that Americans change their saving and investment behavior based on tax policies.
What do you think of proposals to increase tax rates just for high earners?
Last week, President Obama asked Congress for $60.4 billion for Hurricane Sandy response and recovery. But where is that money actually going?
According to Heritage Foundation research, only $12 billion of the President's request, or just 21 percent of the total, will be directed to Hurricane Sandy response and recovery. The rest is going to fund unrelated projects such as:
- Roughly $28 billion of the request is marked for future disaster-mitigation projects on the East Coast, including $3.2 million for erosion control projects and $15 billion for Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grants;
- $3 billion for federal departments and agencies to repair or replace federal assets, including $2 million for roof repairs at the Smithsonian;
- $200 million for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to be used freely at the discretion of the Secretary;
- $6 million to purchase food for food banks, a need that could be better met by local companies and the nonprofit sector.
If unnecessary items are removed from the Administration's request, you're left with a request of $12.8 billion in supplemental funds.
Do you think lawmakers should use disaster relief as an excuse to fund their pet projects?
Rep. Wally Herger (R-CA) has introduced an important Medicare reform proposal, one that's very similar to The Heritage Foundation's Medicare reform outlined in our Saving the American Dream plan.
Medicare reform is long overdue. It has been a decade since any major Medicare reform proposal was introduced to Congress, and Obamacare did little to fix it. And while Heritage continues to push for Obamacare repeal, we also continue to advocate for fixes to strengthen Medicare and other programs.
Heritage expert Rea Herderman explains how Herger's proposal would work:
|
Herger's legislation would protect and enhance Medicare for low-income beneficiaries by offering them a more generous benefit, and it would protect future beneficiaries by making Medicare more financially sustainable. The act contains changes to traditional Medicare, but it also clearly lays out a transition to premium support with the federal contribution eventually based on the minimum bid from both private insurers and traditional fee-for-service.
|
| |
The federal government is spending too much money, and this plan's reforms would help curb that spending. Herger's reform follow the model of the Federal Employee Health Benefits plan, which allows individuals to direct their benefit to their preferred health plan. Ultimately, Hederman explains, this premium support model "would save the government substantial money without endangering the future of Medicare."

On Today's Program
With Glenn on vacation for the holidays, we're counting down the top Glenn moments of 2012. What were this year's highlights? Stay tuned to the Glenn Beck newsletter to find out!
Obama's insanely crazy life story
When President Barack Obama came out and said you can't make it in America if you are different, Glenn could not believe his ears. Did the President really just say that? He of all people should know that anyone in America can make it today. Especially considering that he himself is the President of the United States and has one of the craziest backgrounds ever. Forget the funny sounding name -- America elected Obama despite the fact he had a dad named Lolo, with a monkey named Tata, a small zoo with chickens, ducks, dogs, birds of paradise, and baby crocodiles. His stepdad also worshipped something called Hanuman the monkey god. There's a ton more and Glenn laid it all out in one of the more incredible monologues you will ever see -- not because of anything special Glenn did (although there was a small zoo on set with all the animals Barack Obama had growing up) but because of how incredibly implausible this story is. And despite all of the bizarre life circumstances, Obama still managed to get elected. How could he possibly not believe America is still a place where anyone can make it?
