FROM JOSEPH FARAH'S G2 BULLETIN
Tracking Pakistan's nukes to Saudi Arabia?
Report says weapons may have been transferred as early as 2004
by F. Michael Maloof
BEIRUT - Pakistan may have transferred nuclear weapons to the chief bankroller of its development program, Saudi Arabia, as far back as 2004, according to a then-U.S. government official who received the revelation in a Pakistani intelligence briefing at the time, says a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
Larry Werline, in a little-noticed report in Blackwater Tactical Weekly last June, said the transfer was revealed in a briefing that Pakistani Inter-Service Directorate, or ISI, officials gave him and other U.S. experts when relations between the United States and Pakistan were on a far better political and diplomatic footing.
Werline said that it was unusual that the intelligence service would oversee Pakistan's nuclear program. Nonetheless, the high-ranking ISI briefers told of the increasing cooperation Pakistan was receiving at the time from China.
Chinese assistance included advanced production of lighter plutonium warheads for miniaturization to fit on Chinese missiles, based on technology, Werline said, that was stolen from U.S. and British work.
Essentially, the result of such work is weapons, with plutonium, that are lighter and have a higher explosive yield than weapons based on enriched uranium.
Sources have told WND/G2Bulletin that Saudi Arabia financed Pakistan's nuclear weapons program and that even now, given the increasing Islamist threat in Pakistan, Islamabad may have decided to store some of its nuclear weapons in Saudi Arabia for safe keeping.

Will Saddam's WMDs Fall into the Hands of Al Qaeda?
December 9, 2012 By Daniel Greenfield
Probably one of the most despicable lies perpetrated by the Democratic Party was the claim that Saddam Hussein had no WMDs. It was a lie of political convenience by a party whose top politicians had asserted the exact opposite until it became more convenient for them to jump on a new bandwagon.
After all that there would be a certain historical irony if Saddam's WMDs were indeed finally found, but by Islamist terrorists into whose hands they fell after almost a decade of liberal political malfeasance culminating in their irresponsible support for the Sunni side in the Syrian Civil War.
Let's map what that would look like
1. The Democrats sabotaged the Iraq War by preventing any enforcement action against the Syrian origin of the suicide bombers and terror squads in the early days of the post-war period. Meanwhile Syrian WMDs had been smuggled into Syria.
2. The Democrats took power and then backed an Arab Spring that put Syria into the crosshairs of the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda, exposing the WMDs to those terrorists.
3. Either the terrorists get their hands on the WMDs, in which case the likelihood of them being used on the US or Israel is very high.
4. Alternatively Syria turns them over to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard which ships them to Iran.
But back to the story...

Tell Governor Corbett NO to healthcare exchanges
717-787-2500
The Corner States Should Absolutely Refuse to Set Up Obamacare Exchanges By Mario Loyola November 13, 2012 Proponents of Obamacare are making one argument that some conservatives may find appealing - namely that it is much better, from a states' rights point of view, to set up state-based exchanges than to let the feds come in and do it themselves. This argument is absolutely wrong. Allowing your states to be deputized as instruments of federal policy is just as bad as bowing to federal commandeering of state agencies, which is unconstitutional. Let's begin with the principle that the federal government is not allowed to command states or their officials to do anything. That was settled in the two modern commandeering cases, New York v. United States (1992) and Printz v. United States (1997). The federal government has gotten around that through a variety of schemes under the general category of "cooperative federalism." The Supreme Court has generally taken a permissive attitude of these schemes, only because the states supposedly retain freedom of choice, "both in theory and in fact." But it is increasingly clear that their choice is not really free, because they are penalized if they don't comply with the federal program. This problem is clear with programs like Medicaid: The feds tax money away from the states (or they borrow it from the capital markets) and then offer to give it back to the states on condition that they comply with federal preferences. In the Obamacare decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the feds can't present states with the "loaded gun" of losing existing Medicaid funds if they don't comply with the Medicaid expansion requirements. But states still lose the money Obamacare "offers" for the Medicaid expansion itself, hence there is still a draconian penalty. With the exchanges, there is also federal conditional "aid" in play, but the real penalty the states face if they don't bow to the will of Obamacare is that the feds will come in and take over the health-care market. But it's much easier for the feds to do that in a handful of states than for them to do it in most of the states. Feds might not be able to do it in a large number of states without asking Congress for more money or for amendments to the law. That would strengthen the position of the House of Representatives, and its GOP majority. State governors should be under no illusions: You are not preserving one iota of state autonomy by setting up your own Obamacare exchange. On the contrary, you are letting the feds deputize you as instruments of federal policy. Let the feds set up the exchanges themselves; they can pay for them and be accountable for the results. That will impose a real limit on federal power, and provide leverage for rolling back some of Obamacare. In the meantime the message of state governments to the Department of Health and Human Services should be an absolute and unequivocal "NO." Patriots, Goal: 25 calls a day into all six offices (the Governor and five House leadership) Next Action for You: 1.) Go to www.afp-pa.com
and sign up to "Adopt a Day". Adopt A Day Commitment: You personally recruit 5 other people to make the calls with you and ask each of them to find 1 other person to also make a call that day. If you do that you personally will have been responsible for 11 calls into the Governor and House leadership's offices. That's amazing! Next Action for AFP to support You on your "Adopt a Day": 1.) Once you sign up, Matt or Randy will be reaching out to you via email to confirm your date. 2.) Work with leaders on given day to maximize impact and total number of calls. 3.) Matt, Randy or Ed Things to Keep in Mind: 1.) This is a "HELPING HAND CALL" and not a "PUNCH IN THE FACE CALL". As mentioned on the conference call, we are one step away from getting what we want...which is Corbett to FULLY close the door on the state exchange...and YOUR HARD WORK helped get him to where we need him to be. So use this opportunity to once again educate and ask Corbett to be a champion for us. 2.) The wheels of change, especially in government, turn very, very, very slowly. Don't be frustrated. Well...you can be frustrated...but don't give up and hold steady on the course. You are doing the right thing and it is making a difference. 3.) A recent news item has come out saying that the federal government and the insurance companies are saying that premiums for states that do not adopt the exchange will be increased. Here is a great way to answer this when speaking with the Governor or legislators: "We understand the insurance companies are threatening to raise premiums on states that do not adopt exchanges...but let's not kid ourselves...premiums and everything else associated with healthcare are going to increase dramatically, now that Obamacare is law for the foreseeable future. That is a given...so this is nothing new. Furthermore, nothing will cost us more than having our state "own" this exchange when the federal funding runs out in 2015. It will cost the average family over $3000 a year. Do you want to know what $3,000 means for my family? It means I could pay for xxxxx (insert what you could or actually do do with $3,000 a year. For instance: it is a years worth of Catholic school education, it is a year's water bill, it is a year's IRA contribution etc)." 4.) When you make your calls, please make sure you mention you are working with Americans for Prosperity in Pennsylvania. It is so important to continue to build your group by showing that you are part of a larger coalition. AFP is working across the country to defeat the exchanges. In PA, we are working not just as activists, but within the Capitol and with our key donors. You want the legislators and the Governor to know that YOU and YOUR group are part of a very big, broad and powerful COALITION. ObamaCare is Not a Sure Thing

Those who thought ObamaCare was set in concrete by Chief Justice John Roberts' decision last June are in for a shock. December 14 is the new deadline (extended from November 16) for states to let the feds know, yea or nay, whether or not they will be setting up a health insurance exchange, which is the key to participating in the misnamed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

VALLEY FORGE PATRIOTS THURSDAY (not Friday), DECEMBER 13TH MEETING, 6PM Phoenixville Country Club IMPORTANT MEETING! UN Agenda 21 Please plan to be there. Put the date on your calendar now. - A "show and tell" with John Taylor who works with Tom Dewees, at the American Policy Center, a 15 year leader of exposing this UN scheme to take away your property rights and other American liberties, otherwise known as sustainable development.
Agenda 21 is the plan that is intended to take away the rights and liberties of all Americans. Currently, there is a big push to institute a global tax and make the UN the global IRS. If you think this is not possible, I challenge you to find out the real truth. The UN Agenda 21 plan is also to take away your gun rights, control the sea, space and air (global commons), have financial regulatory authority, a global economic council, and a world monetary board. But one of the worst things for us, is the plan to take away our right of property ownership and turn much of our country into uninhabited wastelands. No roads, no transportation, no population. If you think this is extreme and can't happen, you are wrong. This plan is so far down the road that we will have a very hard time stopping it. There are many counties and townships in our area that have already signed up and are involved, including the borough of West Chester. These communities and counties don't realize what they are signing up to support. The words they use are positive sounding, but the results are very ugly. Some municipalities in Maryland have fought and have won their way out of the program. Everyone needs to learn about this plot. Please personally invite your supervisors, the RCCC, commissioners, and other legislators. Do this now! Plan to greet them, sit with them and follow up with them. They are so involved with other issues that Agenda 21 seems far off and impossible. Aware citizens must help them learn the reality! We the People must defeat any treaty that promises to hand the UN global taxing powers or any other powers over our nation and our liberties! Please join the VFP and participate - join like-minded patriots and learn how we can help stop this assault on America! Free parking, food and drink available for purchase. |

AMERICAN JEWS AND CHRISTIAN EVANGELICALS: IRRECONCILABLE ENEMIES OR INEVITABLE ALLIES?
|
|
Michael Medved is a nationally syndicated radio talk show host and bestselling author. His daily show is heard by over 3.75 million people across the country. Born in Philadelphia, Michael won admission to Yale at age 16 as a National Merit Scholar. He majored in American History and graduated with honors, before attending Yale Law School, where his classmates included Bill and Hillary Clinton. Michael wrote his first bestseller at age 26 - "What Really Happened to the Class of '65?" - a skeptical reconsideration of the "counterculture" of the 1960's that became a weekly TV series on NBC.
Many American Jews distrust and even fear the rise of the evangelical Christianity. They see this religious movement as a threat to the survival of Judaism in the United States and to the continuance of a society that values pluralism and religious liberty. On the other hand increasing numbers of American Jews view evangelicals as natural allies, not just when it comes to support of Israel, but on a range of social issues here in the U.S. In this provocative presentation, Michael Medved will explain where Jews and Christians already agree, and where they can never agree, in their participation in the ongoing battles shaping American society.

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq
Jul 18th, 2012
Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

Corbett: Pa. must address pension woes now
By Brad Bumsted and Mike WereschaginPublished: Wednesday, December 5, 2012With Pennsylvania having a crisis from spiraling public pension costs, Republican Gov. Tom Corbett on Tuesday outlined potential fixes he will offer to legislative leaders in January before presenting his 2013 state budget. Corbett told the Tribune-Review that options include increasing the state retirement age, which varies by agency, and changing how pension benefits are calculated by not including overtime and adding lower-salaried years into the formula. Any changes would start with new employees but, if he can get lawmakers to agree, could include workers who haven't put in the 10 years required to become vested in the system. Making changes won't fix the problem in the short term, but the state cannot afford to postpone action any longer, Corbett said. As pension costs rise - state payments are due to increase by $511 million next year - other items in the budget will get squeezed. "Everything is being somewhat driven by what the effect of the pension is," Corbett said. "People need to know why this is an issue." The Office of the Budget projects a $41 billion unfunded liability for the pension systems that include teachers and state workers. Trying to cut pension costs would pit Corbett against public-sector unions, which are among the state's most influential interest groups. Corbett, however, said the first hurdle is the Republican-controlled General Assembly. Asked whether he plans to confront labor groups more directly in the next two years, Corbett said: "We are going to work and see what we can get through the Legislature. That's my answer."

Dear Members and Friends,
As we commemorate the 225th Anniversary of the U.S. Constitution this year,
we would also like to pay tribute to the first three states to ratify that most precious document. All three ratified the Constitution in December, 1787.

Delaware Flag Pennsylvania Flag New Jersey Flag
Exactly 225 years ago, today, on December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution--hence, the nickname, the First State.
Five days later, on December 12, 1787, Pennsylvania became the second state to ratify the Constitution.
Six days later, on December 18, 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the Constitution.
These three states formed the nucleus of the new Republic and the Independence Hall Tea Party Association is proud to represent the tri-state area and is grateful to our members and friends who reside in the region.
We also can not forget that 71 years ago, today, Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor.
The loss of life and property was staggering--but an attack on US territory was not to be repeated until sixty years later--on September 11, 2001.
We are most grateful to our Founders and Defenders--those who served and sacrificed so much in order to establish the liberty and independence we have inherited.
(Could not help noticing that Pennsylvania's Motto is Virtue, Liberty, and Independence. It was understood by our Founders that we have neither true liberty or independence without virtue.)
As you may well know, in honor of our troops, we are conducting a Help-A-Vet Money drop for two local charities dedicated to assisting veterans in need.
The Homeless Veterans Project, a program run by the Broad Street Ministries, provides meals and other services to homeless vets. Association friend, Joe Eastman, is one of its biggest boosters.
The Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House provides shelter for homeless vets.
Another Association friend, Chris Hill, is heavily involved with this charity.
So far, we have raised $500. We hope to raise at least $1000 for these fine charities by Sunday evening.
If you would be willing to make a $5 or $10 donation towards our goal, we would be most appreciative. We will continue to provide you with timely updates on our progress and wish to thank those who have already contributed.

God Bless all of you, our fallen heroes and their families, and the entire military--those who have served or are currently serving our great nation.
Hope to see you at the Army/Navy game!

2. GOP Classic Growing up in the South means that you were raised on Coca-Cola. We don't just call Coke, "Coke," we call every soda made "Coke." We believe Coke tastes better in a glass bottle than it does in a can. Every true Southerner has tried the unique concoction of drinking Coke with peanuts (in the bottle). We love Coca-Cola. However, in the early 1980's, Pepsi starting outselling Coke. After a few years of hand wringing and worry, on April 23, 1985, the Coca Cola Company-and this is still emotionally straining as I write this-abandoned its century old formula and introduced-sigh-"New Coke." Oh sure, the consultants said it would be a great idea. The experts believed Coke needed to make a change to compete with Pepsi. Even the polling of focus groups told Coke executives that America would overwhelmingly prefer that new, sweeter mixture. It flopped. The public outcry was immediate. Protests were organized. Op-ed pieces were written. Hundreds of thousands of angry calls were received by the company. One former Coke executive told me that the new formula "was the best worst decision an American company had made." The experts, consultants and polling were shockingly wrong. Less than three months after New Coke's introduction, the company announced the return of the original nectar of the gods in July 1985. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 3. Michigan Madness: Thousands Plan To Lay Siege On State Capitol On Tuesday Over Right-To-Work On Tuesday, unions, left-wing radicals and their allies are planning to lay siege to Michigan's state capitol on Tuesday to protest the state lawmakers' move to give workers the right to work for unionized companies without being compelled to pay union fees or be fired. On a Facebook page dedicated to a "Day of Action" on Tuesday, as of Sunday night, over 2,400 activists have pledged to show up to protest. That number is expected to grow by Tuesday. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 4. Selling Conservatism And Why Benefits Beat Features If you've ever been involved in sales of any type, from selling a product to applying for a job to dating, you know that selling benefits is superior to selling features to all but a very small audience. People, whether they are customers, employers, or a love interest are more interested in what the product does for them than in what it has. You may compare yourself or your product to your competitors in terms of features but those features are only useful to the extent that they provide the customer with a benefit. The next time you see a supermodel accompanied by a hunchback dwarf, think benefits not features. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 4. Is There a Carbon Tax in Your Future? Folk wisdom tells us, "Where there's smoke, there's carbon emissions." And where there are carbon emissions, there are internationalists hell-bent on hobbling the American economy in the name of Global Warming. Several recent signs: - In 2010, the Treasury Department commissioned a National Academy of Science study of the best ways to "green" the tax code. The report was originally due in September, but an extension has been granted until early 2013.
- International banking and financial services giant HSBC Holdings Plc expects the Obama Administration to implement a $20/ton carbon tax (plus 6% per year increase) in its second term, to serve as "revenue enhancement" and as a replacement for the ill-fated Cap-and-Trade scheme.
- The Treasury Department's Office of Environment and Energy has given the Heisman treatment to a Freedom of Information Act request from the Competitive Enterprise Institute for its emails and economic analysis relative to carbon tax proposals. CEI has filed suit in an effort to compel disclosure.
- Last but not least, the idea of a carbon tax has been embraced by the unlikeliest suspects: ExxonMobil, BP and Shell. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

A TRUE WORK OF ART The New York Times reported in 2009 that Art in Embassies spends about $4.5 million a year for permanent art acquisitions; chief curator Virginia Shore said at the time that artists and dealers support the program via favorable pricing; for the embassy in Beijing, an outlay of $800,000 yielded works with an appraised value of $30 million.
Here's one of the "paintings" from the Art in Embassies exhibit in Stockholm. "Paul Rusconi, Barack Obama, 2008." Estimated price of 5,000, but sold for $20,000. You can see it up above. The new symbol of America. ...from State Department Spent 4.5 Million for Embassy Art, Had No Money for Benghazi SecurityA REPUBLICAN CIVIL WAR Back when Romney was rammed through the establishment choice, I wrote that the establishment had its shot, but that if it blew it again, those responsible should be prepared to pay the price. No price is being paid of course. Instead, insanely enough, the GOP is trying to purge the Tea Party. This is fantastically stupid, because Obama won on turnout and organization, he won on volunteers from a passionate member base willing to fight for an extreme program. And where is the GOP going to find the people who will out-volunteer, out-organize and out-donate them? Nowhere. A party of business leaders was a fine proposition in 1821. It's no more viable today than it was a hundred years ago.

California shows us the future Democrats plan for us when they gain full control of our lives

By Emma Karlin, staff writer
Now that the Democrats have gained total control of California we are beginning to see what they want to do to all of us should they ever get total control of America.
In San Francisco mentally malformed adults stand naked in the streets next to children while they claim a right to be naked in public. The State of California plans to tax the "wealthy" at a 52% rate and the bizarre character in the Statehouse Jerry Brown signs anti America anti -family and anti -Christian bills as fast as he can.
Here are some of the assaults on Christianity and Americanism made recently by California's Democrats.
A bill passed by the Democrat run State government and signed by RINO Arnold Schwarenegger proclaimed May 22 Harvey Milk Day which celebrates Milk a homosexual pedophile.
Not to be outdone for depravity Brown has signed these anti Christian/American bills.

Arming the enemy, again
Dec 08, 2012 05:13 am | Coach Collins
By Jim Emerson, staff writer
In a rare moment of journalism the New York Times reported that the Obama Administration secretly encouraged Arab countries to ship arms to rebel forces in Libya during the rebellion to oust longtime dictator Muammar Qaddafi. The arms were provided to the rebels and Islamic extremists with links to al Qaeda in a Muslim Brother sponsored insurrection to turn the oil rich African nation into an Islamic republic.
The flow of weapons and supplies from al Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (with the help of the Administration lead NATO airstrikes) overwhelmed the Libyan military and brought about the fall of the Qaddafi regime. Militant groups were well armed and provided a viable threat to the current government of Libya and everyone else in the embattled nation. The unstable situation on the ground in Libya may very well repeat itself in Syria given the way events are unfolding. The current situation on ... Continue Reading:Arming the enemy, again

New survey results are odd but not hard to decipher: honest journalism is dead
Dec 07, 2012 05:13 am | Coach Collins
By Kevin "Coach" Collins
During the months leading up to last month's election, we saw a remarkable amount of survey data that pointed to a big victory for Mitt Romney. Nevertheless, almost all of the projections generated by the polls were ultimate proved wrong, so wrong that it really can no longer be successfully argued that people did not lie to pollsters. If this was the extent of the disinformation we heard and read it would be bad enough, but it gets worse.
Reports of a sharp drop in Democrat registration published by a Democrat "think tank" calling itself the "Third Way" (a heretofore unknown group) have also been proved to be wildly inaccurate - so much so that it is hard to accept that their "errors" were honest.
Third Way told us some whoppers that were accepted as true in many corners, this site included. For instance Third Way told us the Democrat ... Continue Reading:New survey results are odd but not hard to decipher: honest journalism is dead

What do "Fast & Furious" and the Benghazi murders have in common? We know that "Fast & Furious" was a SCAM operation by Obama to set up the situation to restrict our 2nd Amendment rights and to institute new firearm restrictions on law-abiding Americans. They allowed assault weapons to "walk" into Mexico to the drug cartels presumably to be tracked. However, they were NOT "tracked" by ATF to the drug lords, but were used by the drug cartels to murder over 20,000 innocent Mexicans, AND US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry! Then, when Congress tried to investigate, Obama ultimately invoked "Executive Privilege" so relevant documents would remain SECRET! Nobody has been held accountable for the SCAM! Is "Benghazi" is another Obama SCAM like "Fast & Furious!". (See below) The reason Obama and his henchmen maintained that a stupid amateur 13-minute video sparked all the Middle East violence, AND the Benghazi massacre, is pure CRAP! I'll go a step farther! I suspect the man who made the video is still in Los Angeles County Sheriff's custody is because he has a direct connection with Obama and the Administration! I suspect Obama and the Administration plotted to use the video back in JULY when it first appeared on YouTube! I suspect that Obama, Hillary, et all consulted with Egyptian Prime Minister Morsi prior to 9-11 to use this concocted video trailer as the catalyst for the violence! Just like "Fast & Furious", the violence resulting from the video could be used to further the UN Resolution on criticism of ISLAM! What do you think? Is it possible? Peter

Benghazi bungle an attempt to advance Islam?
Analyst says impromptu Obama decision twisted terror attack details
by Taylor Rose
WASHINGTON - The Obama administration may be trying to use the al-Qaida terror attacks on U.S. operations in Benghazi, Libya, to advance a growing global movement to protect Islam from criticism, according to one expert.
The issue is the "defamation of religions" resolution pending at the United Nations. It was introduced by Islamic nations and coalitions to criminalize any negative reference to Islam or Muslims.
Clare Lopez, a senior fellow at the Center for Security Policy, as well as a Senior Fellow at the Clarion Fund, said that after the attack that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others, the Obama administration made an impromptu decision to advance the Islamic agenda item it already had endorsed.
"The Obama administration, and especially the Department of State led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, are coordinating closely with the [Organization of the Islamic Conference] to achieve implementation of U.N. Human Rights Commission Resolution 16/18, which despite some cosmetic wording changes, remains the vehicle through which the OIC is determined to work toward the criminalization of the criticism of Islam in U.S. law," she said.

"Massive fraud, cover-up by CAIR"
The Washington Examiner story below (highlights added) reports the latest blow to CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Massive fraud, cover-up by CAIR exposed in federal lawsuit
http://www.examiner.com/article/massive-fraud-cover-up-by-cair-exposed-federal-lawsuit?cid=db_articles
BY: CHRISTOPHER COLLINS
Nihad Awad, CAIR Executive Director November 26, 2012
Last Friday, the Law Offices of David Yerushalmi, P.C. and the American Freedom Law Center (AFLC) said that they filed a devastating legal brief supported by hundreds of pages of evidence, asking a federal judge to find the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) liable to five of its former clients for fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. In a release to the media today, AFLC stated: "The legal brief demonstrates beyond any reasonable doubt that CAIR is a criminal organization that deceptively holds itself out to the public as the nation's largest Muslim-American civil rights organization." "The brief and supporting evidence were filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in two companion cases, Saiyed v. CAIR and Lopez v. CAIR, in which David Yerushalmi is lead counsel. The brief and supporting evidence overwhelmingly demonstrate that CAIR was involved in a massive criminal fraud and cover-up that injured numerous client-victims who had looked to CAIR for legal assistance, yet the CAIR "attorney" allegedly handling their cases was in fact not an attorney." Yerushalmi, who is also Co-Founder and Senior Counsel of AFLC, commented, "The evidence has long suggested that CAIR is an organization set up by the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas to further its aims of stealth Jihad in the United States," referring to the fact that CAIR was named by the federal government as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial. "According to the facts that are carefully laid out in our legal brief and fully supported by the record evidence," Yerushalmi explained, "CAIR has engaged in a massive criminal fraud in which numerous CAIR clients have been victimized, and because of the CAIR cover-up many still don't realize it. The fact that CAIR has victimized Muslims and non-Muslims alike demonstrate that it is only looking out for itself and its ongoing efforts to bilk donors out of millions of dollars of charitable donations thinking they are supporting a legitimate organization." AFLC went on to say that five former clients of CAIR filed the two lawsuits in federal court alleging common law and statutory fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and intentional infliction of emotional distress against CAIR. These two lawsuits followed an earlier lawsuit which had also alleged that CAIR's fraudulent conduct amounted to racketeering, a federal RICO crime. In that case, the court dismissed the RICO counts, concluding that CAIR's conduct as alleged was fraudulent but not a technical violation of RICO. The two civil lawsuits were filed by Yerushalmi on January 6, 2010, and because they arise out of the same facts, the cases were consolidated. AFLC stated, "The supporting evidence, which was compiled after more than a year and a half of contentious discovery that involved numerous document requests, motions to compel the production of documents that CAIR was concealing, and multiple depositions of high-ranking CAIR officials, shows that Morris Days, the "Resident Attorney" and "Civil Rights Manager" at the now defunct CAIR-MD/VA chapter in Herndon, Virginia, was in fact not an attorney and that he failed to provide legal services for clients who came to CAIR for legal representation. The evidence also shows that CAIR knew of this fraud and purposefully conspired with Days to keep the CAIR clients from discovering that their legal matters were being mishandled or not handled at all. While Yerushalmi and AFLC represent the five plaintiffs in these two lawsuits, three of whom are Muslim Americans, according to CAIR's internal documents; there were many more victims of the CAIR fraud scheme." "As set forth in the court filings, CAIR knew or should have known that Days was not a lawyer when it hired him. But, like many organizations accused of wrongdoing, things got worse when CAIR officials were confronted with clear evidence of Days' fraudulent conduct. Rather than come clean and attempt to rectify past wrongs, CAIR conspired with Days to conceal and further the fraud. To this end, CAIR officials purposefully concealed the truth about Days from the clients, law enforcement, and the media. When CAIR did receive calls from irate clients about Days' failure to provide competent legal services, CAIR fraudulently deceived them about Days' relationship with CAIR, suggesting that he was never actually employed by CAIR." Robert Muise, co-counsel in the lawsuit and Co-Founder and Senior Counsel of AFLC, commented, "The overwhelming evidence marshaled in this case will finally put to rest the myth fabricated by CAIR's PR machine and perpetrated by a complicit media that this is a legitimate Muslim-American civil rights organization." "This lawsuit strips away CAIR's veil of legitimacy." The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its sister organization, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), have been controversial over the years and recently were systematically involved in the 2012 presidential elections in getting American Muslims out to vote for President Obama in the swing states of Florida, Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Those states election results became controversial due to voter irregularities and allegations of voter fraud in favor of President Obama.

Media Alert: Bill Bennett Show Tomorrow Morning

I'll be an in-studio guest with Bill Bennett on Morning in America tomorrow during the 8 am (eastern) hour of the show. Not sure what we'll be talking about, but listen in and call in if you can.
Here's a pic from one of my turns as guest host a few months back:
Not Enough Buns for All the Green Weenies in Doha Posted: 09 Dec 2012 11:32 AM PST (Steven Hayward)
The latest UN climate change meeting has followed the predictable script laid out here a week ago: the meeting had to go into overtime to "save" the talks from collapse. I especially like reading the weenie-friendly UK Guardian's coverage of these meetings, because their attempt at earnest coverage ironically underscores what a complete farce the whole thing is. From the latest dispatch:
Poor countries have won historic recognition of the plight they face from the ravages of climate change, wringing a pledge from rich nations that they will receive funds to repair the "loss and damage" incurred. This is the first time developing countries have received such assurances, and the first time the phrase "loss and damage from climate change" has been enshrined in an international legal document.
Read More . . . Speakerships and Double Standards Posted: 09 Dec 2012 10:55 AM PST (Steven Hayward) So let's survey the state of play. The President and his party control the Senate, while the opposition party controls the House. With a mounting atmosphere of crisis over the exploding federal deficit, the President and the Speaker of the House are meeting trying to hammer out a budget deal. And the conventional wisdom is that that President must, in the name of reasonableness, give in to the Speaker of the House. Wait-you mean that's not what you're hearing? Of course not; the media and the liberal establishment (does there need to be a conjunctive in that clause?) all demand that the Speaker of the House must-simply must-give in to the President. But the first paragraph above describes the budget deal of 1982, when some of the very same people who today say John Boehner must give in to Obama were saying that President Reagan must-simply must-give in to House Speaker Tip O'Neill and agree to raise taxes. Reagan cut taxes too much, and so he has to raise them now, the chattering class argued. But strangely almost no one in the media today is saying that Obama, having spent to oblivion, needs to cut spending first and foremost. The common element that explains the difference between these two episodes is easy to spot: whichever branch of government is the locus of pressure to raise taxes will always be crowned by the media as the person to whom the other branch must submit. Call it the Iron Law of Taxation Press Coverage. A Shocking End to a Great Fight Posted: 09 Dec 2012 07:35 AM PST (John Hinderaker) Yesterday my youngest daughter's high school hosted an invitational dance tournament. Since we were the hosts, my wife and I both worked the tournament. I was part of the security detail and for four hours wore a black T-shirt that said "SECURITY" in big white letters-a first for me. The home team swept the tournament, happily. Last night, at my son's invitation, we watched the epic fourth battle between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez at a boxing gym in Minneapolis. It was a fun evening, featuring a giant screen, excellent Mexican food, and a crowd of local boxers, trainers and fight fans. The three preliminary bouts were rather listless and all went the distance, but the main event was a thriller. Read More . . . Cold war history for left-wing dummies, Poliwood edition Posted: 09 Dec 2012 07:20 AM PST (Scott Johnson) I think that just about everything President Obama "knows" about American history comes from left-wing academics like American University professor Peter Kuznick, the co-author with Oliver Stone of The Untold History of the United States. The book is a companion to Stone's Showtime series. At American University, incidentally, Kuznick teaches the "path-breaking course Oliver Stone's America." On Showtime, Stone presents Peter Kuznick's America. They have got a circle of love kind of thing going between them. In any event, cultural artifacts such as the book and the series have done a lot of damage. It is a mistake to ignore them. Read More . . .

Obama Curve: Media Celebrate Meager Job Growth, 540K Dropping Out of Workforce |
|
by John Nolte
Today saw the release of the November jobs numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The news is that Hurricane Sandy did not affect hiring. 146,000 jobs were created and the unemployment rate edged down to 7.7%, the lowest rate since September of 2008. Revisions brought worse news. 49,000 fewer jobs were created in September and October than originally reported.
Already the media is celebrating and relieved by these numbers, but only graded on the four-year curve created for this president can the news of 146,000 new jobs be something worth celebrating. At this rate, we're barely keeping up with population growth, and we're most certainly not keeping up with the 360,000 to 390,000 new jobless claims filed every week.

December 7, 2012
Unemployment and the Fiscal Bluff
"For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it might cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it." --Patrick Henry
Gaming the numbers
November's jobs numbers are out and, though they're "better than expected," they're far short of a real recovery. The U.S. economy added 146,000 jobs in November, and headline unemployment dropped to 7.7 percent, the lowest rate since December 2008. But that number is deceptive.
The rate dropped because some 542,000 people left the workforce. If labor participation remained the same as it was in January 2009, headline unemployment would be 10.7 percent. The U-6 rate, which includes the underemployed and those who have given up looking for work, is 14.4 percent. Notably, the unemployment for blacks, who gave Barack Obama 96 percent of the vote, is 13.2 percent. Of the jobs created in the last five months, 73 percent of them were in government. Additionally, September and October numbers were revised down by a total of 49,000 jobs -- awfully convenient now that the election is over!
At least one person thinks that unemployment is a huge boon for the economy. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) says that unemployment insurance benefits -- which by the way cost $520 billion over the last five years -- "probably are one of the most important stimuli for the economy." So if more people become unemployed, the economy will grow even faster. Problem solved.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics did note one bright spot: "[O]ur analysis suggests that Hurricane Sandy did not substantively impact the national employment and unemployment estimates for November." That's good news, but Hurricane Barack and the fiscal bluff certainly are depressing the recovery, such as it is. Some 23 million Americans remain unemployed or underemployed, and millions more who are working haven't received pay increases in years to keep up with inflation. The economy is in a holding pattern while politicos in Washington preen and pontificate about the cliff.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that under "current law," i.e., if (when) we go over the cliff, the federal budget will still increase by 55 percent over the next 10 years, while tax collection will soar to an all-time high of 21.4 percent of GDP. CBO estimates, however, assume no economic change from higher taxes, which is unrealistic. In other words, higher rates won't necessarily bring in the projected revenue because businesses and consumers will change their behavior to avoid taxes. Government spending is also a tax in the sense that every dollar spent by the government must first be taken out of the economy.
A final fiscal cliff note: Barack Obama is demanding a return of the top tax rates to those in effect during the supposed nirvana of the Clinton years, and he's likely to get all the rates of Clinton's era. In fact, that's what former DNC chief Howard Dean said is necessary. "[T]he truth is everybody needs to pay more taxes, not just the rich," Dean admitted. "[W]e're not going to get out of this deficit problem unless we raise taxes across the board, to go back to what Bill Clinton had and his taxes." They're coming for the middle class, too, and some of them aren't afraid to say so.
To get spending to Clinton levels, however, the federal budget would have to be cut by an astounding 37 percent. According to Breitbart, "Adjusted for inflation, Clinton spent $2.24 trillion in 1993; that level stayed relatively stagnant, rising to $2.41 trillion in 2001." Obama is now spending nearly twice that. So instead of the $1.2 trillion in baseline "cuts" over 10 years outlined in the sequester, Congress would need to make real cuts of that much this year alone.
As we all know, there's a greater chance that pigs will fly.

On Jim DeMint's resignation, Part Two
Posted: 08 Dec 2012 03:04 PM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
In writing about Jim DeMint's decision to leave the Senate and become president of the Heritage Foundation, I noted that Heritage recently has supplemented its traditional role as a major research institution by getting more involved in day-to-day political battles on Capitol Hill. DeMint, I added, is well-suited to help lead that move.
Tevi Troy argues, however, that the focus of think tanks like Heritage should remain on research, not partisan politics. According to Troy, "if he is to be successful, DeMint should focus on building an organization that is itself primarily an idea generator."
I agree. Washington suffers from no shortage of wily political operatives. I'm not sure the same can be said with regard to non-superficial, non-politicized policy analysis.
Fortunately, as Troy points out, DeMint appears to understand this. In his remarks upon taking the job, he emphasized the need to "protect the integrity of Heritage's research and not politicize the policy component." He further noted that "Heritage is not just another grassroots political group."

Obama is fine with attending concert featuring "kill those Yankees" rapper
Posted: 08 Dec 2012 02:27 PM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
It looks like President Obama will attend the "Christmas in Washington" concert where South Korean rapper "Psy" will perform. Obama was not moved to skip the event even after it became publicized that Mr. Psy had the following to say in 2004, following the beheading of a South Korean by Islamic extremists in Iraq:
Kill those f****** Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives; Kill those f****** Yankees who ordered them to torture; Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law and fathers; Kill them all slowly and painfully.
We shouldn't be surprised. Psy's rant isn't that much worse than those of Rev. Wright, who thought that, with 9/11, America's chickens had come home to roost. Obama also , and indeed worked with, Bill Ayers. And Ayers didn't just wish for the slow and painful death of innocent Americans; he committed himself to bringing it about. With Psy, it was "only words."
Moreover, Psy apologized, sort of, for his viciousness. Ayers never has.
Barack Obama, himself a left-wing radical in my opinion, seems not to have a problem with those whose left-radicalism has caused them to advocate, or even commit, violence against Americans. And now that he has been reelected, Obama apparently sees no reason to pretend otherwise.

Flanking Maneuvers
Posted: 08 Dec 2012 10:34 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
I've been meaning to bring up the following New York Times graphic since it was published last month, as it shows that Republicans are at their highest level of control of state governments in 60 years. Not bad for a party supposedly in deep trouble and on death's door. (Notice, by the way, that Republicans controlled exactly zero states after the 1976 election.)
Click to embiggen
So while all eyes are on Washington and the fiscal cliff, outside of Washington a determined counterattack against liberalism is under way, and looks to have some good chances of success. First, several states have announced they are going to refuse to set up Obamacare insurance exchanges, heeding Michael Greve's always well thought out advice that states actively assert their constitutional prerogatives to "interpose" themselves between Washington and the people:
[S]tate interposition-meaning a refusal to cooperate in Medicaid or exchanges-may yet produce an Obamacare crash-and-burn within the President's term in office. Moreover, and more importantly , it may produce a collapse on constitutional terms, provided someone can articulate them. . . The Madisonian precept gains special force and constitutional dignity in the context of federal programs that require, or rather imperiously demand, the states' active cooperation. A state failure to do the feds' bidding is not an ugly outbreak of neo-Calhounism. The power to interpose comes from a form of government that the Constitution permits but, unmistakably, treats as deeply suspect: a government over governments. States have been complicit in that scheme for far too long. Saying "no" to a further extension-for partisan reasons, fiscal reasons, or no reason at all-is an implicit embrace of a constitutional proposition: the feds have their sphere, and we (the states) have ours. If the feds insist on their scheme, let them do so with their money and their officers: they have the power. If they want to work through us, we interpose. The Constitution contemplates it; allows it; and very nearly demands it.
But the really big news came out of Michigan this week, with the state legislature's vote to make Michigan a right-to-work state. No one saw this coming, which is one reason why it succeeded. It is a dagger at the heart of union power. First Wisconsin, and now Michigan. Notice, also, how Democratic legislators walked out of the capitol in Michigan. That's the face of liberalism today: rather than abide by a democratic election result, walk out and try to prevent the legislature from functioning. And then holler about "secession" talk from conservatives. Heh.
As the red-blue split in the nation widens further, the new wedge issue in politics won't be any single issue as in years before, but will be the broader issue of the massive opportunities for flanking liberalism's failures from outside Washington. Stay tuned. And shore up your flanks.

Taxes for Thee, but Not For Me
Posted: 08 Dec 2012 09:53 AM PST
(Steven Hayward)
Liberals typically argue that marginal tax rates really don't make that much difference to economic behavior. So then why are so many companies rushing to pay special dividends before the first of the year, when taxes on dividends will triple? Chief among them is the Washington Post, which just announced it will pay an early dividend:
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Washington Post Co. will pay its 2013 dividends before the end of this year to try to spare investors from anticipated tax increases. The media and education company said Friday that its dividend of $9.80 per share is payable Dec. 27 to shareholders of record as of Dec. 17. The payout is instead of regular quarterly dividends next year. Washington Post is the latest company to move up its quarterly payout or issue a special end-of-year payment to protect investors from potentially having to pay higher taxes on dividend income starting in January.
I guess the Post's management doesn't read the Post's editorial page. Hey wait a minute: Warren Buffett is the Post's largest shareholder:
The Washington Post's dividend payment also stands to benefit those with a significant stake in the company, such as Warren Buffett's firm Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire is its largest shareholder with an estimated 1.7 million shares, which means it could get a roughly $17 million dividend payment.
I guess I should stop being amazed at the brazenness of liberal hypocrisy.

When this site was redesigned, we added the Picks feature above so that we could note news as it was breaking, bring items of interest to the attention of readers about which we didn't necessarily have anything to say, or take note of pieces that were otherwise worthy of your attention. The Picks feature has obviated the need I occasionally felt to post installments of this series that served the same purpose, but I have a few items I would like to draw to your attention this morning without having much of interest to say about them myself other than placing them into a context.
Weekly Standard deputy editor Richard Starr tweeted a recommendation of Gene Weingarten's Washington Post Magazine article on Brian Murtagh, the prosecutor who put Jeffrey MacDonald away in 1979 and kept him there ever since. Documentary filmmaker Errol Morris has a new book touting MacDonald's innocence, and it has received attention that is both substantial and favorable in the New York Times. Richard is a shrewd editor with a keen eye. In his tweet Richard asserted that Weingarten deserves a third Pulitzer Prize for "Since 1979, Brian Murtagh has fought to keep Jeffrey MacDonald in prison."Read it and see why.
Rian Malan is a South African journalist and author of the best-selling book My Traitor's Heart. He is the author, most recently, of a book that I think I'm going to have to read, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, recently reviewed by Douglas Rogers in the Wall Street Journal.
If you saw the fantastic documentary film Searching For Sugar Man, you caught a glimpse or two of Malan. If you haven't seen the film, check out the Wall Street Journal backgrounder by Rachel Dodes, "A rock 'n' roll mystery."
Malan himself is also the author of an utterly compelling Journal book review. Ron Radosh picked up a thread of Malan's review and linked to Malan's related essay, "Mandela's secret history."This is all compelling reading, highly recommended.
I have singled out Washington Post foreign affairs columnist several times over the years as a moral cretin unable to distinguish friend from enemy or good from evil in the Middle East. Ignatius's column yesterday - "Our man in Cairo" - is an exception to the rule. Better yet is Andrew McCarthy, whose compass is unerring.

Coase on the Case at 102
Posted: 07 Dec 2012 02:18 PM PST
(Steven Hayward)
Ronald Coase
Ronald Coase, the University of Chicago economist, Nobel Prize winner, and originator of the widely used and misused "Coase Theorem" (about the dynamics of property rights) is still going at the ripe young age of 102. I believe his famous essay, "The Problem of Social Cost," remains the most-cited law review article in history, and it spawned the influential law and economics movement inside the legal academy.
Writing recently in the Harvard Business Review in an article provocatively titled "Saving Economics from the Economists," Coase argued that much of the economics discipline today has become distant from the real world, if not in fact damaging:
Economics as currently presented in textbooks and taught in the classroom does not have much to do with business management, and still less with entrepreneurship. The degree to which economics is isolated from the ordinary business of life is extraordinary and unfortunate. . . This separation of economics from the working economy has severely damaged both the business community and the academic discipline. Since economics offers little in the way of practical insight, managers and entrepreneurs depend on their own business acumen, personal judgment, and rules of thumb in making decisions. In times of crisis, when business leaders lose their self-confidence, they often look to political power to fill the void. Government is increasingly seen as the ultimate solution to tough economic problems, from innovation to employment. Economics thus becomes a convenient instrument the state uses to manage the economy, rather than a tool the public turns to for enlightenment about how the economy operates. But because it is no longer firmly grounded in systematic empirical investigation of the working of the economy, it is hardly up to the task. . .
That's not his only recent contribution. He's just co-authored a new book, How China Became Capitalist. My pal Nick Schulz interviewed Coase and his co-author Ning Wang recently. One highlight:
Nick Schulz: You are critical of much modern economics, saying it has been transformed "from a moral science of man creating wealth to a cold logic of choice and resource allocation." How did this happen? Where did economics go wrong? RC & NW: Adam Smith, the founding father of modern economics, took economics as a study of "the nature and causes of the wealth of nations." As late as 1920, Alfred Marshall in the eighth edition of Principles of Economics kept economics as "both a study of wealth and a branch of the study of man." Barely a dozen years later, Lionel Robbins in his Essay on the Nature and Significance of Economic Science (1932) reoriented economics as "the science which studies human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses." Unfortunately, the viewpoint of Robbins has won the day.The fundamental shift from Smith and Marshall to Robbins is to rid economics of its substance - the working of the social institutions that bind together the economic system. Afterward, economics has turned into a discipline without a subject matter, advocating itself as a study of human choices. This shift has been assisted by what Hayek (1952) criticized as the growing trend of scientism in the study of society, which took mathematical formalism as the only secure route to truth in the pursuit of knowledge. As economists become more and more interested in formalism and related technical sophistication, it becomes secondary whether the substantive questions that they choose to perfect their methods or to illustrate their theoretical models bear any resemblance to the real world economy. By and large, most of our colleagues are not bothered by the fact that what they profess is mainly "blackboard economics."

It's Time To Stick It To the Blue States
Posted: 07 Dec 2012 01:24 PM PST
(John Hinderaker)
After years of campaigning for higher taxes, it is beginning to dawn on liberal residents of blue states that the effects, for them, will not be pretty. Most of the nation's "rich"-those earning over $250,000 a year, or, depending on President Obama's mood, $175,000-live in the blue states. Moreover, the deductions that are likely slated for reduction or elimination, including state taxes and home mortgages, mostly benefit blue state residents. So the New York Times, a prime agitator for higher taxes, appears to be having second thoughts:
As they continue to wrangle over the year-end fiscal deadline, both Democrats and Republicans are considering caps on federal income-tax deductions. That could be very bad news for residents of New York, New Jersey and other states and cities that rely heavily on their own income taxes. Such a cap would reduce the value of the deduction for state and local income taxes, which has been part of the federal tax code for a century (though the deduction has been diluted by the alternative minimum tax). That could substantially reduce middle-class disposable incomes in high-tax states, which, in turn, would put pressure on those states to cut taxes and the services they have long chosen to provide.
The Times doesn't disguise the ideological basis for its sudden enthusiasm for tax preferences:
Over time, the deduction has become the equivalent of a subsidy from the federal government to states that believe in a strong and active government. That may infuriate conservatives in low-tax states like Texas, who hate subsidizing states with different views of government's role, but it's actually a good thing for the country.
Sure it is. But, hey, if you're going to raise taxes on "the rich," something's gotta give. A lot of conservatives are now saying, let the stuck pig squeal, and let's stick it to blue state liberals, good and hard. Who knows, maybe before long the Times will figure out that the "rich" disproportionately constitute its readers. Raising their taxes will reduce the discretionary income they have to spend on items like newspapers. It's just another illustration of the adage that every cloud has a silver lining.

Welfare Spending Dwarfs Poverty
Posted: 07 Dec 2012 01:00 PM PST
(John Hinderaker)
As Republican and Democratic negotiators look for places to cut the federal budget, welfare spending should be at the top of the list. The Senate Budget Committee reports that total spending on means-tested federal programs, if divided by the number of households living below the official poverty line, works out to $168 per day. How much is that? Well, the average American household lives on $137 per day:
That welfare spending also translates into better than a $30 per hour income.
This doesn't mean that families on welfare live better than the median American family, but it does mean that they have more money spent on them. In part, this is a tribute to the remarkable inefficiency with which the federal government does just about everything. When it comes to welfare, it is time to get out the knife and start cutting.

The emerging Democratic agenda - illustrated!
Posted: 07 Dec 2012 09:09 AM PST
(Scott Johnson)
Over at NRO, Stanley Kurtz deduces the emerging Democratic agenda from a New York Times op-ed column by Kenneth Baer and Jeffrey Liebman. Kurtz summarizes the column and comments on it:
With Obama safely re-elected...we're now beginning to hear the Democratic take on the coming demographic challenge. Today's Baer-Liebman Op-Ed highlights the "baby boom bump," but takes the polar opposite of a conservative approach to it. For Baer and Liebman, massive baby-boom retirements mean that it's time to face the facts and accept a far larger government than we've ever seen before. They also call for "higher revenues," along with "slower growth in our social insurance programs." So the Times now sets the stage for the real economic debate of the future. Soon both Democrats and Republicans will highlight the massive baby-boom retirements to make their respective points. Voters will no longer be clueless about the fast-closing fiscal-demographic disaster, but will soon be asked to choose between two radically different ways of dealing with it. Either reform entitlements in conformity with free-market principles and avoid massive tax increases (thereby reducing benefits), or vastly expand the welfare state and tax the middle-class to pay for it, using government rationing for such cost-control as is possible. Conservatives have known this was the choice all along. With Obama now safely re-elected, however, the Democrats are owning up to it as well.
Ever observant, Kurtz notes that the picture above the Baer-Liebman column suggests that illustrator Niv Bavarsky hasn't quite gotten with the program: "He's correctly depicted the implications of the Op-Ed's argument, but in a way that bucks up the conservative case." Hey, somebody get me redraw!

Friday, December 7, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer
Talking; Not Talking There are conflicting reports about the state of the fiscal cliff negotiations between the White House and Speaker John Boehner. Some suggest the two sides are talking, that channels of communication are open. On the other hand, what is being communicated isn't necessarily productive. According to Politico, President Obama and Speaker Boehner spoke Wednesday. That conversation led to high-level staff meetings yesterday where things broke down again. White House congressional liaison Rob Nabors reportedly dug his heels in demanding higher tax rates and the power for President Obama to raise the debt ceiling without congressional approval. It is such a bitter pill that it would completely blow up the GOP brand. If this is how the Obama White House is negotiating, there may be no option for House Republicans other than to stand their ground and go over the fiscal cliff. If that ends up being the result, brace yourself for massive across-the-board tax increases. Few will be spared. Working families will be hit especially hard. Every individual tax rate will go up. Even the bottom tax rate will increase from 10% to 15%. The per-child tax credit will be cut in half, slashed from $1,000 to $500. And be prepared to see more of what happened yesterday when Barack Obama visited a middle class Virginia family. He sat at their kitchen table and warned them that if we go over this cliff, they will face at least $2,200 in higher taxes. His message was essentially this: "As you know, I wanted to give you this tax cut. But Republicans just won't give up on protecting their rich friends." Of course, there is no "tax cut." This entire debate is about the extension of existing rates and preventing a massive tax hike, which many Democrats seemingly want. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Obama's main negotiator, said they are "absolutely" willing to go off the cliff. But Obama can get away with this doublespeak because he knows the left-wing media will forever obfuscate the facts. The War On Christmas The war on Christmas, and the broader assault on Judeo-Christians values, has been going on for a long time. It started in the early 1960s when the Supreme Court ruled against prayer in schools. Initially there was a tremendous backlash from Christians. The movement was still alive during the Reagan Administration when we tried to pass a constitutional amendment to permit non-denominational school prayer. But amending the Constitution is extremely difficult, and the effort faltered. Sadly, over time even many Christians began to buy into the left's arguments. What if someone wanted to put up a satanic alter in the town square? We would be outraged, so let's just keep everything out. The public square is just that -- public and for everyone. Besides, the country has changed and we just need to change too. Well, now faith is being purged everywhere, not just in public but in private settings as well. Senior citizens at The Willows apartment complex in Newhall, California, were informed this week that Christmas trees and menorahs in communal areas were being removed because they were religious symbols. This is not a government-run nursing home, but a privately-run nursing home! There used to be a time when we kept pornography out of public view. Now it's everywhere, but religious symbols must be hidden from view. That is not right. Fortunately, the retirement community's management company has backed down. The Christmas tree and menorahs are back. But it never should have happened in the first place. Nor is it right that a soccer coach has been forced to resign because he prayed for an injured player. The left has so distorted the law that freedom of religion is being misinterpreted as freedom from religion. The left says that tolerance demands no one should see anything that offends their values. But we are routinely exposed to art and media images that offend men and women of faith. What the left really means is that liberals should be freed from exposure to views that offend them. Those representing Judeo-Christian values are the only ones being told to shut up and give up our rights. The left says it is wrong to "legislate morality." But the fact is all law is someone's idea of what is right and what is wrong. The only question is whose values will prevail. Remembering Pearl Harbor The news that we had been attacked at Pearl Harbor was the defining moment of my parents' lives. My father did what many red-blooded, patriotic men did -- he immediately volunteered for the Marines. As America was dragged reluctantly into the war, he drilled with broomsticks because at that time we didn't have enough money for weapons. In the years that followed, we understood that there were things the Germans and Japanese did that we would not do. But we made difficult choices that would enable us to defeat our enemies. For example, knowing our values, the Japanese often put POWs -- hundreds at a time -- on ships and warned us not to sink them, hoping that the public would turn against the war effort. We sunk the ships because we knew that we could not give the Japanese navy a free pass. Even though we started the war with broomsticks, there was a toughness and a determination to defend our country. I'm not suggesting America needs to turn back the clock to 1941. But when it comes to the things that matter to the survival of any civilization, it seems we are losing confidence in our values. As we remember "the day that will live in infamy," let's give thanks that we still raise patriots who will answer the call to serve God and Country, and pray we can recapture the confidence of the Greatest Generation. They did not have a lot of physical treasures, but they had a rich understanding that Judeo-Christian civilization was something worth protecting.

About The Heritage Foundation
Founded in 1973, The Heritage Foundation is a research and educational institute - a think tank - whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.

Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) addressed a packed auditorium at The Heritage Foundation yesterday morning, just moments after being named the organization's next president. He will succeed Ed Feulner, who is stepping down after 35 years leading the think tank.
More than 200 employees of the Heritage Foundation rose for a standing ovation as Feulner passed the torch to his successor. One Heritage employee shouted a battle cry: "Hoo rah!"
That set the tone for the staff meeting. Heritage's Board of Trustees, announced Chairman Thomas A. Saunders III, voted unanimously to approve the decision.
DeMint said it was "the honor of my life," and said that the move would be "a big promotion."
"This organization is in a position to do more to save our country than any other organization I'm aware of," DeMint said. "I believe that we have put together here the power, the muscle, the ideas to turn things around."
DeMint, Feulner, and Saunders stressed that Heritage's policy-focused, detail-oriented approach will remain the organization's mission. DeMint pledged in a Thursday statement to "protect the integrity of Heritage's research and not politicize the policy component. Heritage is not just another grassroots political group."
Indeed, DeMint stressed that his proposals in the Senate have been informed by Heritage's policy work. "This is a homecoming for me," he said, noting that he was inspired to run for Congress after reading and studying Heritage's policy work. "This feels like I just walked in the front door of my own house," he told Heritage staff.
DeMint will take over as president in April. Feulner will remain a member of the Board of Trustees and continue in a new role as Heritage's chancellor and the chairman of its Asian Studies Center.

Yesterday, after The Heritage Foundation's announcement, Ed Feulner and Jim DeMint called in to Rush Limbaugh's radio program to discuss the news. Here's an excerpt:

RUSH: Senator Jim DeMint. Why have you decided to retire from the Senate to take this on? DEMINT: Rush, it was the Heritage Foundation that inspired me to run for Congress, and many of the policies I've developed, whether it be Social Security reform or health care reform, tax reform, Heritage has guided that policy development. And I believe that I can do more good for the conservative movement outside of the Senate in leveraging the assets of the Heritage Foundation to communicate a more positive, optimistic message to the American people.

Jim DeMint to Lead the Battle of Ideas
Yesterday's announcement that Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) is leaving the U.S. Senate to replace Edwin J. Feulner as president of The Heritage Foundation surprised the political establishment in Washington and underlined Heritage's role as a key institution for America's future. The Washington Post declared on its front page: "DeMint says he can advance conservative ideas better at Heritage." DeMint's selection as president comes three years after Feulner, president for 35 years, told Heritage's board of trustees he would be retiring in 2013. DeMint, who came to Washington in 1998 as a congressman from South Carolina, told a packed Heritage auditorium yesterday that it was the only job that would lure him away from the Senate. "This organization is in a position to do more to save our country than any other organization I'm aware of," DeMint told the staff, noting that Heritage inspired him to enter public service. "I believe that we have put together here the power, the muscle, the ideas to turn things around." >>> Watch our video with clips of DeMint's speech to Heritage staff DeMint will take leadership of Heritage at a time when conservatives are facing significant challenges in Washington. The clock is ticking toward the fiscal cliff at the end of 2012. Beyond that immediate challenge are opposite visions for solving America's entitlement crisis, protecting the country from enemies, and ensuring that our Constitution continues to guide decisions in the halls of government. Following their remarks to Heritage staff yesterday, DeMint and Feulner joined Rush Limbaugh on his radio program. Together they outlined how Heritage would confront these challenges. Here's an edited excerpt:
RUSH: What's happening to make this happen now, Ed? FEULNER: Well, as you know, about three years ago I told our board of trustees that, "Look ahead, gentlemen and ladies. I am going to be 71, and it is time for us to find a successor, and we've got to find somebody who's absolutely committed to our firm principles here at Heritage and who knows the sanctity of our research and who can lead Heritage to the next level." And, boy, have we got that guy. RUSH: Senator Jim DeMint, Why have you decided to retire from the Senate to take this on? DeMINT: Rush, it was The Heritage Foundation that inspired me to run for Congress, and many of the policies I've developed, whether it be Social Security reform or health care reform, tax reform, Heritage has guided that policy development. And I believe that I can do more good for the conservative movement outside of the Senate in leveraging the assets of The Heritage Foundation to communicate a more positive, optimistic message to the American people.
During the interview, Feulner quoted Senator-elect Ted Cruz (R-TX), who called DeMint "a friend, and hero, and a patriot." Cruz added, "His combination of brilliance, principle, common sense, creativity and-above all else-courage will be an ideal fit for the conservative movement's leading think tank." Leaders across the ideological spectrum -- from the conservative Family Research Council to the libertarian Reason Foundation, and even the progressive Center for American Progress -- offered encouraging words about DeMint's selection. There's good reason to be optimistic. After more than three decades of Feulner's leadership -- in which he transformed Heritage into "the Parthenon of the conservative metropolis," according to The New York Times -- DeMint seizes the reins with an energized staff ready to tackle America's thorniest problems with new and innovative policy solutions.

Christmas: Your city and schools don't have to cave to atheist threats
December 7, 2012
Dear ##FirstName[AFA Supporter]##,
This year seems to be "open season" on cities and public schools by atheist groups who are bent on taking the joy of Christmas out of communities everywhere. They despise Christianity and they hate Christmas. How sad. For example, in the past two months, groups like Freedom From Religion Foundation have threatened to sue cities and schools for recognizing the true meaning of Christmas. Illinois: The village of Alsip stopped displaying a cross on its water tower, something they've been doing every Christmas for some forty years. California: After sixty years of displaying a Nativity scene in one of its public parks, the city of Santa Monica has been forced to discontinue this blameless custom. Surprisingly, the atheists did not sue to have the word "Santa" removed from the city's name. Michigan: The village of Warren had a Nativity scene since 1945, but they don't have it anymore. That's right, another atheist lawsuit. Virginia: Attempting to compromise, Loudon County supervisors have decided to allow both Christians and atheists to set up seasonal displays this year on the courthouse lawn. Atheist displays in the recent past have included a skeleton in a Santa Claus suit, nailed to a cross. Florida: Cottondale Elementary School replaced a nativity scene with Frosty the Snowman. Rhode Island: Gov. Lincoln Chaffee has replaced the state's "Christmas" tree with a "holiday" tree. Hawaii: Mitch Kahle, founder of the Hawaii Citizens for the Separation of State and Church threatened a lawsuit against the Moanalua High School orchestra for performing in a church. In response, the school canceled their planned Christmas concert altogether. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Atheists are becoming bolder in their attacks because city and school officials are afraid to take a stand. Be ready to take action! If your city or school comes under the baseless scare tactics of atheist groups, take it upon yourself to immediately contact one of these Christian-based constitutional attorney groups who stand ready to defend religious freedom. Many times, city officials and schools cave into atheist groups because they don't know their rights. Help make sure your city or school knows they don't have to cower in fear any longer. Alliance Defending Freedom and Liberty Council stand ready offer legal representation to communities and schools against anti-religious zealots who wish to destroy all public displays of Christmas. Keep these numbers handy and be ready to contact: Alliance Defending Freedom 15100 N. 90th Street Scottsdale, AZ 85260 1-800-835-5233 Liberty Council PO Box 540774 Orlando, FL 32854 1- 800-671-1776

Could Obamacare Go the Way of McCain-Feingold?
|
By David Catron
|
The "Affordable Care Act" might die a death of a thousand legal cuts.
|
Last June, upon learning that the Supreme Court had ruled Obamacare's individual mandate constitutional, many observers were forced to concur with the Dickens character who opined, "If the law supposes that... the law is an ass." Yet, the increasing number of anti-PPACA lawsuits that have been receiving serious attention from the courts suggests that the legal system may not be as irrational as it seemed when Chief Justice John Roberts began braying from the bench on June 28. If this seems Pollyannaish, consider the fate of McCain-Feingold.
