 | NSA Whistleblower: 'Everyone In U.S. Under Virtual Surveillance' |
The FBI records the emails of nearly all US citizens, including members of Congress, according to NSA whistleblower William Binney. In an interview with RT, he warned that the government can use this information against anyone. This is what we get for sacrificing our liberty in the name of security, largely during the Bush administration (and of course continued by the hypocrite-in-chief Obama who campaigned on rolling back the surveillance state.)

New York Times: Arms Shipments 'Secretly' Approved by Obama Admin. Ended Up in Hands of Islamic Militants The Blaze | by Jason Howerton | Posted on December 5, 2012 at 10:10pm
The Obama administration "secretly" approved arms shipments to Libyan rebels from Qatar last year, however, U.S. officials quickly became concerned as evidence suggested Qatar was handing the weapons over to Islamic militants, The New York Times reports, citing a number of United States officials and foreign diplomats.
There is no evidence available that suggests the U.S.-approved weapons were involved in the deadly terrorist attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, which left four Americans dead on Sept. 11. But the revelation is sure to ignite speculation.

Dick Armey Resigns from FreedomWorks
by Michael Patrick Leahy 4 Dec 2012
In a surprise move, former House Republican Majority Leader Dick Armey has resigned as chairman of FreedomWorks, the conservative Washington based group that has been strongly identified with the Tea Party movement.
Based on early press reports, Armey's departure does not appear to be a harmonious one.
Armey resigned in an e-mail on Friday. Someone leaked the email to Mother Jones, a left wing publication. Mother Jones contacted Armey, who confirmed his resignation and offered these comments in a story that ran Monday afternoon:
The top management team of FreedomWorks was taking a direction I thought was unproductive, and I thought it was time to move on with my life. At this point, I don't want to get into the details. I just want to go on with my life. . . "Obviously I was not happy with the election results. We might've gotten better results if we had gone in a different direction. But it isn't that I got my nose out of line because we should've done better.
FreedomWorks Vice President Adam Brandon confirmed Armey's departure to CNN on Monday, saying "he did step down on Friday, and we wish him well."
Typically, the departure of a key leader of a high profile political organization is announced in a jointly issued press release, not in response to leaked stories.
Armey and FreedomWorks CEO Matt Kibbe, a former Congressional staffer, had previously appeared to have been on the same page ideologically and tactically. In fact, they co-authored a book together in 2010, Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto.
David Corn, co-author of Monday's Mother Jones article, wrote a book published in March of 2012 highly critical of the Tea Party movement, Showdown: The Inside Story of How Obama Fought Back Against Boehner, Cantor, and the Tea Party.
Morning Jolt - December 5, 2012
By Jim Geraghty
You Go into Battle with, or Perhaps without, the Armey You Have So . . . this certainly seems sudden and odd: In a move not publicly announced, former Rep. Dick Armey, the folksy conservative leader, has resigned as chairman of FreedomWorks, one of the main political outfits of the conservative movement and an instrumental force within the tea party. Armey, the former House majority leader who helped develop and promote the GOP's Contract with America in the 1990s, tendered his resignation in an memo sent to Matt Kibbe, president and CEO of FreedomWorks, on November 30. Mother Jones obtained the email on Monday, and Armey has confirmed he sent it. The tone of the memo suggests that this was not an amicable separation. (See Armey's email below.) Armey demanded that he be paid until his contract ended on December 31; that FreedomWorks remove his name, image, or signature "from all its letters, print media, postings, web sites, videos, testimonials, endorsements, fund raising materials, and social media, including but not limited to Facebook and Twitter"; and that FreedomWorks deliver the copy of his official congressional portrait to his home in Texas. "The top management team of FreedomWorks was taking a direction I thought was unproductive, and I thought it was time to move on with my life," Armey tells Mother Jones. "At this point, I don't want to get into the details. I just want to go on with my life." The Washington Examiner's Charlie Spiering has a clue on one issue that might have been a point of contention: the leadership of House speaker John Boehner. Shortly after cutting ties with former Rep. Dick Armey R.-Tx., the conservative grassroots organization FreedomWorks issued a letter challenging Speaker John Boehner R-Ohio for eliminating some of the more conservative House Republicans from their Committees. The conservative grassroots organization specifically mentioned Rep. Tim Huelskamp R-Kan. and Rep. Justin Amash R-Mich. who were removed from the House Budget Committee and Rep. David Schweikert R-Ariz - removed from the House Financial Services committee. "House Speaker John Boehner and the failed political establishment are purging House Committees of fiscal conservatives," reads a letter sent to FreedomWorks activists by President and CEO Matt Kibbe. James Joyner writes, "It'll be interesting to see what led to this. Certainly, Armey has been the face of the organization, and arguably of the entire Tea Party movement, since it came into prominence." And to be honest, that never made that much sense to me. The tea parties were all about exhaustion with business as usual and refusal to accept the well-established Washington way of doing things; a longtime House leader seemed like an incongruent choice to be the public face of a group dedicated to reforming how Washington works. Then there's the occasional slipperiness Armey demonstrated in his congressional career. As Senator Tom Coburn writes in Breach of Trust, Armey was floating the idea of abandoning the term-limits pledge even before the 104th Congress was convened in January 1995. In his autobiography, The Prince of Darkness, columnist Bob Novak details Armey's offering a blunt, on-the-record criticism of Newt Gingrich's book contract, and then later insisting to other reporters that Novak had misunderstood him. Novak closes the story, "I never really trusted him after the Gingrich book incident." And allegedly Armey was all in favor of Bill Paxon's coup against Newt Gingrich in 1997 - right up until he learned he wouldn't be speaker in the aftermath. And this comment from Armey, expressed in defense of Doug Hoffman in the special House election in New York's 23rd congressional district in 2009, never sat well with me: Coming to Mr. Hoffman's defense, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, who accompanied the candidate on a campaign swing, dismissed regional concerns as "parochial" issues that would not determine the outcome of the election. On the contrary, it is just such parochial issues that we expect our representative to understand and be knowledgeable about, if he wants to be our voice in Washington. Hey, it's only parochial when it affects someplace else. Considering how highly I think of everyone else involved in FreedomWorks, Armey always seemed like a strange outlier. I expect FreedomWorks will thrive in the post-Armey era. Which is certainly how they seem to see his departure: The top brass at the tea-party group FreedomWorks is anything but ruffled by the abrupt departure of former House majority leader Dick Armey, who founded the group and helped lead it for more than eight years. "I wish him well," said the group's president, Matt Kibbe, when asked about Mr. Armey's resignation as FreedomWorks chairman. "I've been in this town long enough to see people come and see people go, and Dick decided he wanted to retire."

Tell Governor Corbett NO to healthcare exchanges
717-787-2500
The Corner States Should Absolutely Refuse to Set Up Obamacare Exchanges By Mario Loyola November 13, 2012 Proponents of Obamacare are making one argument that some conservatives may find appealing - namely that it is much better, from a states' rights point of view, to set up state-based exchanges than to let the feds come in and do it themselves. This argument is absolutely wrong. Allowing your states to be deputized as instruments of federal policy is just as bad as bowing to federal commandeering of state agencies, which is unconstitutional. Let's begin with the principle that the federal government is not allowed to command states or their officials to do anything. That was settled in the two modern commandeering cases, New York v. United States (1992) and Printz v. United States (1997). The federal government has gotten around that through a variety of schemes under the general category of "cooperative federalism." The Supreme Court has generally taken a permissive attitude of these schemes, only because the states supposedly retain freedom of choice, "both in theory and in fact." But it is increasingly clear that their choice is not really free, because they are penalized if they don't comply with the federal program. This problem is clear with programs like Medicaid: The feds tax money away from the states (or they borrow it from the capital markets) and then offer to give it back to the states on condition that they comply with federal preferences. In the Obamacare decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the feds can't present states with the "loaded gun" of losing existing Medicaid funds if they don't comply with the Medicaid expansion requirements. But states still lose the money Obamacare "offers" for the Medicaid expansion itself, hence there is still a draconian penalty. With the exchanges, there is also federal conditional "aid" in play, but the real penalty the states face if they don't bow to the will of Obamacare is that the feds will come in and take over the health-care market. But it's much easier for the feds to do that in a handful of states than for them to do it in most of the states. Feds might not be able to do it in a large number of states without asking Congress for more money or for amendments to the law. That would strengthen the position of the House of Representatives, and its GOP majority. State governors should be under no illusions: You are not preserving one iota of state autonomy by setting up your own Obamacare exchange. On the contrary, you are letting the feds deputize you as instruments of federal policy. Let the feds set up the exchanges themselves; they can pay for them and be accountable for the results. That will impose a real limit on federal power, and provide leverage for rolling back some of Obamacare. In the meantime the message of state governments to the Department of Health and Human Services should be an absolute and unequivocal "NO." Patriots, Goal: 25 calls a day into all six offices (the Governor and five House leadership) Next Action for You: 1.) Go to www.afp-pa.com
and sign up to "Adopt a Day". Adopt A Day Commitment: You personally recruit 5 other people to make the calls with you and ask each of them to find 1 other person to also make a call that day. If you do that you personally will have been responsible for 11 calls into the Governor and House leadership's offices. That's amazing! Next Action for AFP to support You on your "Adopt a Day": 1.) Once you sign up, Matt or Randy will be reaching out to you via email to confirm your date. 2.) Work with leaders on given day to maximize impact and total number of calls. 3.) Matt, Randy or Ed Things to Keep in Mind: 1.) This is a "HELPING HAND CALL" and not a "PUNCH IN THE FACE CALL". As mentioned on the conference call, we are one step away from getting what we want...which is Corbett to FULLY close the door on the state exchange...and YOUR HARD WORK helped get him to where we need him to be. So use this opportunity to once again educate and ask Corbett to be a champion for us. 2.) The wheels of change, especially in government, turn very, very, very slowly. Don't be frustrated. Well...you can be frustrated...but don't give up and hold steady on the course. You are doing the right thing and it is making a difference. 3.) A recent news item has come out saying that the federal government and the insurance companies are saying that premiums for states that do not adopt the exchange will be increased. Here is a great way to answer this when speaking with the Governor or legislators: "We understand the insurance companies are threatening to raise premiums on states that do not adopt exchanges...but let's not kid ourselves...premiums and everything else associated with healthcare are going to increase dramatically, now that Obamacare is law for the foreseeable future. That is a given...so this is nothing new. Furthermore, nothing will cost us more than having our state "own" this exchange when the federal funding runs out in 2015. It will cost the average family over $3000 a year. Do you want to know what $3,000 means for my family? It means I could pay for xxxxx (insert what you could or actually do do with $3,000 a year. For instance: it is a years worth of Catholic school education, it is a year's water bill, it is a year's IRA contribution etc)." 4.) When you make your calls, please make sure you mention you are working with Americans for Prosperity in Pennsylvania. It is so important to continue to build your group by showing that you are part of a larger coalition. AFP is working across the country to defeat the exchanges. In PA, we are working not just as activists, but within the Capitol and with our key donors. You want the legislators and the Governor to know that YOU and YOUR group are part of a very big, broad and powerful COALITION. VALLEY FORGE PATRIOTS THURSDAY (not Friday), DECEMBER 13TH MEETING, 6PM Phoenixville Country Club IMPORTANT MEETING! UN Agenda 21 Please plan to be there. Put the date on your calendar now. - A "show and tell" with John Taylor who works with Tom Dewees, at the American Policy Center, a 15 year leader of exposing this UN scheme to take away your property rights and other American liberties, otherwise known as sustainable development.
Agenda 21 is the plan that is intended to take away the rights and liberties of all Americans. Currently, there is a big push to institute a global tax and make the UN the global IRS. If you think this is not possible, I challenge you to find out the real truth. The UN Agenda 21 plan is also to take away your gun rights, control the sea, space and air (global commons), have financial regulatory authority, a global economic council, and a world monetary board. But one of the worst things for us, is the plan to take away our right of property ownership and turn much of our country into uninhabited wastelands. No roads, no transportation, no population. If you think this is extreme and can't happen, you are wrong. This plan is so far down the road that we will have a very hard time stopping it. There are many counties and townships in our area that have already signed up and are involved, including the borough of West Chester. These communities and counties don't realize what they are signing up to support. The words they use are positive sounding, but the results are very ugly. Some municipalities in Maryland have fought and have won their way out of the program. Everyone needs to learn about this plot. Please personally invite your supervisors, the RCCC, commissioners, and other legislators. Do this now! Plan to greet them, sit with them and follow up with them. They are so involved with other issues that Agenda 21 seems far off and impossible. Aware citizens must help them learn the reality! We the People must defeat any treaty that promises to hand the UN global taxing powers or any other powers over our nation and our liberties! Please join the VFP and participate - join like-minded patriots and learn how we can help stop this assault on America! Free parking, food and drink available for purchase. |

Yes, it's true: You can support ACT! for America-at no cost to you! An important message from Guy Rodgers, Executive Director
The next time you make an online purchase of almost anything, you could be helping ACT! for America-at no cost to you. Sound too good to be true? It isn't. All you have to do is sign up for "iGive"-a program that's been around since 1997. The concept is as powerful as it is simple.
Every time an iGive member makes an online purchase at over 1,000 brand-name stores, a percentage of that purchase is donated to that person's charity of choice.
|
And with the holidays just around the corner, you could be helping ACT! for America with every gift you buy! The concept isn't new. In the mid-1990s many supporters of non-profit organizations signed up with long distance telephone programs where a percentage of their bill was donated to their charity of choice. But our investigation of iGive has convinced us that this program has an ease of use and sophistication that we find remarkable.
- Imagine booking a hotel room on Orbitz-and having 1.6% of that purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
- Or buying an Xbox at Best Buy-and having 1.2% of the purchase price donated to ACT! for America.
|
The same goes for buying merchandise at Amazon, Bath and Body Works, Advance Auto Parts, Game Stop, Kmart, Home Depot, Holiday Inn, Old Navy, NASCAR Superstore, Overstock.com, Mattel, J.C. Penney, Office Max, QVC, Radio Shack, Shoe Carnival, Pottery Barn-and on and on the list goes.
|
In other words, every time you make a purchase of merchandise you would buy anyway, you would be financially supporting ACT! for America! All you have to do is log on below and follow the directions to create your account and download the iGive "button." (Note: downloading the "button" is key).
Get Started Here!
When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems. So I spent hours researching. I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.
And the more I dug, the more I liked what I saw. For instance, both of my tech support questions were responded to within 60 minutes. How often does THAT happen?
|
As you know from our Patriot Partner program, we're all about encouraging a lot of people to each do a little-to do something. When everyone does a little, together we accomplish a lot. So consider what could happen.
If just 1% of ACT! for America members each purchased just $400 in merchandise in 2013, from all the available outlets, and the average percentage donated to ACT! was 1.5%, the total amount donated back to ACT! for America would be... ...$15,000. That's a lot of money, wouldn't you agree? And if you were one of those ACT! for America members, it wouldn't cost you one thin dime to help ACT! for America receive $15,000. If this idea really caught on, and eventually 5% of our members made purchases with iGive, that $15,000 could explode to $50,000, $75,000 or more!
|
What's more, that 1.5% figure might be low. Many of the merchants offer percentage donations that are much higher. One printer inkjet company I looked at offered 13%! Every merchant website you visit tells you right at the top what percentage of your purchase price will be donated to ACT! for America. Just think what we could accomplish with an extra $15,000, $50,000 or $75,000 in our fight against radical Islam!
Get Started Here!
One of the things I most wanted to know was their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Check it out for yourself. I confirmed the terms with a company representative. And I like what I learned. As security-conscious as I am, I have no hesitation using the service-and I'm already doing so.
|
I know there are many people out there who would love to support ACT! for America, or give more than they're giving, but in these tough economic times they simply can't. Well, here's a way that everyone who believes in our mission can easily support what we're doing-at no cost to them. It doesn't get any better than that.
There are already chapter leaders who have signed up for the program, and the feedback I have been getting from them has been all positive. They love the idea and many of them are already using it.
|
So please, join me and these ACT! for America chapter leaders who are already signed up and using the iGive service. Yours for a safe and free America

AMERICAN JEWS AND CHRISTIAN EVANGELICALS: IRRECONCILABLE ENEMIES OR INEVITABLE ALLIES?
|
|
Michael Medved is a nationally syndicated radio talk show host and bestselling author. His daily show is heard by over 3.75 million people across the country. Born in Philadelphia, Michael won admission to Yale at age 16 as a National Merit Scholar. He majored in American History and graduated with honors, before attending Yale Law School, where his classmates included Bill and Hillary Clinton. Michael wrote his first bestseller at age 26 - "What Really Happened to the Class of '65?" - a skeptical reconsideration of the "counterculture" of the 1960's that became a weekly TV series on NBC.
Many American Jews distrust and even fear the rise of the evangelical Christianity. They see this religious movement as a threat to the survival of Judaism in the United States and to the continuance of a society that values pluralism and religious liberty. On the other hand increasing numbers of American Jews view evangelicals as natural allies, not just when it comes to support of Israel, but on a range of social issues here in the U.S. In this provocative presentation, Michael Medved will explain where Jews and Christians already agree, and where they can never agree, in their participation in the ongoing battles shaping American society.

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq
Jul 18th, 2012
Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

Dear Members and Friends,
In May of this year, Governor Chris Christie became one of the first governors in the nation to veto a bill establishing a statewide Health Care Exchange--a prominent provision of ObamaCare.

Since both Houses of the New Jersey Legislature are controlled by Democrats, it should be no surprize that, once again, a similar bill sits on the Governor's desk. He has until Thursday to dispense of it.

Normally, we would be confidant that the Governor would do the right thing.
The problem--a lot has transpired since the original veto, including:
1. The US Supreme Court upheld ObamaCare. (Thank you, Chief Justice Roberts!)
2. Obama was re-elected president--making the law's repeal impossible.
3. Christie embraced the President and seems to think kowtowing to him will bring riches to NJ in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
Let us remind the Governor that a bad law deserves a quick death--and that ObamaCare will cost New Jersey dearly.
In the words of President Calvin Coolidge, ""It is much more important to kill bad bills than to pass good ones."
What you can do now if you reside in New Jersey:
T Action Alert: Please call Governor Christie and politely request that he veto the Health Care Exchange bill. Remind him that ObamaCare is
bad law on so many levels--and a costly one at that!
Governor Christie: 609.292.6000
We greatly appreciate everything you do.
On behalf of the Association Board of Directors,
Teri Adams, President

ObamaCare is Not a Sure Thing
|
December 5, 2012

Those who thought ObamaCare was set in concrete by Chief Justice John Roberts' decision last June are in for a shock. December 14 is the new deadline (extended from November 16) for states to let the feds know, yea or nay, whether or not they will be setting up a health insurance exchange, which is the key to participating in the misnamed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

RedState Morning Briefing
For December 6, 2012
1. Reasonableness
The unreasonable Republicans in the House of Representatives are willing to raise taxes by $800 billion.
Anti-tax Republicans will raise taxes. I'm not happy about it, but that is what John Boehner and Mitch McConnell seem to be offering.
They want to raise that money by limiting deductions instead of raising rates.
They do not want to raise rates because that will impact many small businesses in America whose owners pay their taxes as individuals instead of corporations due to the unreasonable and costly compliance of the American corporate tax code.
Raising rates will affect small businesses. Limiting individual deductions related to state income taxes, charitable deductions, mortgage interest, etc. will not impact those small businesses.
2. Fire Boehner: We Only Need 16 Votes to Depose Boehner If conservatives want to keep the House and win the Senate, we need to fire John Boehner as speaker of the House. We only need 16 House votes to do it. As most conservatives know, Boehner and the House GOP Steering Committee decided to purge four conservative House members from their committee. Congressmen Justin Amash and Tim Huelskamp were removed from the House Budget Committee, and Congressmen David Schweikert and Walter Jones were cut from the Financial Services Committee. Amash, Huelskamp, and Schweikert were targeted because they were too fiscally conservative-all three have voted against Boehner's debt ceiling hikes. Amash and Huelskamp were the only two GOP votes against House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan's budget. Amash explained that vote at yesterday's Bloggers' Briefing at the Heritage Foundation, "It's unacceptable to have unbalanced budgets until 2040." For anyone outside of DC, this statement seems obvious. Only in Washington is balancing the budget radical. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 3. Democrats poised to raise taxes... on their own voters. Let me sum up this New Geography article (via Instapundit): Top states with most $250K households: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington DC. - Top metro areas with most $250K households: Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, San Jose, Washington DC.
- States with highest average housing values / mortgages: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, New York, Washington DC.
- Metro areas with highest average housing values / mortgages: Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco.
- States with the highest percentage of people taking itemized deductions: California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Washington DC.
You notice the trend? That's right: there's a lot of blue there. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 4. Steve Scalise Fails the First Test for Conservatives Several weeks ago, Congressman Steve Scalise (LA) was elected chairman of the Republican Study Committee. Many of us felt a deep-rooted disquiet that Scalise would be too closely aligned with leadership. We feared he wouldn't properly defend conservatives and their policies. Well, his response to the recent leadership purge of conservatives from congressional committees has validated our fears. The fact that he was at the scene of the crime as a member of the Steering Committee makes his response even more troubling. On Monday, Congressman David Schweikert (AZ) was kicked off the Financial Services Committee, Congressman Justin Amash (MI) was kicked off the Budget Committee, and Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS) was kicked off both the Budget Committee and the Agriculture Committee. They were unambiguously told that their conservative voting records and their dissent from leadership made them unqualified to sit on those committees. Outgoing RSC chair, Jim Jordan, delivered an appropriate response for the leader of the conservative caucus. "It's unfortunate and unhealthy for our party that principled conservatives are being punished for voting their consciences and keeping the promises they made to their constituents," he lamented. Incoming RSC chair, Steve Scalise, not only failed to call out leadership for their unprecedented purge, he denied the problem while concurrently driving a wedge between several conservative members. . . . please click here for the rest of the post → 5. Food Stamps: Supplemental Assistance or Way of Life From Katherine Rosario over at Heritage Action for America comes word that Newark (NJ) Mayor Corey Booker is trying to make the case that the government should increase food stamp benefits by means of a self-imposed challenge to rely solely on food stamps to purchase all of his food. The left has pulled this stunt before. Fortunately, Senator Jim DeMint's (R-SC) website explains the food stamp program is meant to be supplemental, not to pay for complete meal replacements. This type of liberal propaganda totally distorts the original purpose of the food stamp program or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which was "originally created to distribute surplus food as determined by the United States Agricultural Department and prevent malnourishment during the Great Depression." Today, liberals think that more and more money needs to be funneled into these programs. They - both the programs and the liberals' argument - are very flawed. In fact, Heritage explains, "If converted to cash, means-tested welfare spending is more than five times the amount needed to eliminate all poverty in the United States." Food stamp spending, the second most expensive means-tested aid program, has nearly doubled since President Obama came to office from roughly $39 billion in 2008 to an estimated $85 billion in 2012. And before that, it doubled under President George W. Bush. The program "discourages work, rewards idleness, and promotes long term dependence," Heritage's Robert Rector and Kiki Bradley explain. The Obama Administration's Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) waiver of the successful work requirement from the 1996 welfare reform law only made matters worse, since the work requirement was the reason for so many people, especially minority children and children in single-mother homes, moving out of a position of dependence to a position of self-sufficiency. Heritage's Ryan T. Anderson explains, "Overall assistance should be holistic, oriented not solely at meeting a material need but at transforming lives to be responsible, productive, and independent." It's simply not true that the left cares more for the poor. If they do care for the poor, and do not simply want to breed dependency so that they can stay in power, their political contributions have been totally misguided. From Mayor Booker's ridiculous self-imposed and totally distorted food stamp challenge to the much more egregious error of gutting the 1996 welfare of its successful work requirement, it's clear the political left is missing the point. Anderson continues, "Welfare programs should thus be structured in ways that encourage...productive activities, fostering norms of work, marriage, personal responsibility, and law-abidingness." That is certainly not what the liberals have in mind. Conservatives know that people deserve better than spending a huge portion of their life on food stamps.

There are few weapons as deadly as the Israeli house. When its bricks and mortar are combined together, the house, whether it is one of those modest one story hilltop affairs or a five floor apartment building complete with hot and cold running water, becomes far more dangerous than anything green and glowing that comes out of the Iranian centrifuges. Forget the cluster bomb and the mine, the poison gas shell and even tailored viruses. Iran can keep its nuclear bombs. They don't impress anyone in Europe or in Washington DC. Genocide is equally not worthy of attention when in the presence of the fearsome weapon of terror that is an Israeli family of four moving into a new apartment downwind from Jerusalem. Sudan may have built a small mountain of African corpses, but it can't expect to command the full and undivided attention of the world until it does something truly outrageous like building a house and filling it with Jews. Since the Sudanese Jews are as gone as the Jews of Egypt, Iraq, Syria and good old Afghanistan, the chances of Bashir the Butcher pulling off that trick are rather slim. Due to the Muslim world's shortsightedness in driving out its Jews from Cairo, Aleppo and Baghdad to Jerusalem, the ultimate weapon in international affairs is entirely controlled by the Jewish State. The Jewish State's stockpile of Jews should worry the international community far more than its hypothetical stockpiles of nuclear weapons. No one besides Israel, and possibly Saudi Arabia, cares much about the Iranian bomb. But when Israel builds a house, then the international community tears its clothes, wails, threatens to recall its ambassadors and boycott Israeli peaches.

Why Michelle Obama did not go to Saudia Arabia or Turkey with Obama
"If you check President Obama's last trip over-seas, his wife left just after their visit to France . She has yet to accompany him to any Arab country. Think about it. Why is Michelle returning to the states when 'official' trips to foreign countries generally include the First Lady." Here's one thought on the matter. While in a Blockbuster renting videos I came across a video called "Obama". There were two men standing next to me and we talked about President Obama. These guys were Arabs, so I asked them why they thought Michelle Obama headed home following the President's recent visit to France instead of traveling on to Saudi Arabia and Turkey with her husband. They told me she could not go to Saudi Arabia, Turkey or Iraq. I said "Why not,(?) Laura Bush went to Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Dubai." They said that Obama is a Muslim and therefore he is not allowed to bring his wife into countries that adhere to Sharia Law. Two points of interest here: 1) I thought it interesting that two American Arabs at Blockbuster believe that our President is a Muslim, who follows a strict Islamic creed.
2) They also said that's the reason he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia. It was a signal to the Muslim world, acknowledging his religion. Read more:

Disabilities Treaty Defeated!

Take Action!

December 5, 2012
Yesterday the Senate, by a vote of 61-38, failed to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which would have done nothing to help persons with disabilities, but would have diminished U.S. sovereignty by giving the United Nations unprecedented authority over American businesses.
Treaties require 2/3 of the Senators present to vote for ratification. Since 99 Senators were present for the vote, the treaty needed 66 yes votes but received only 61.
Take Action
If your Senator is one of the 38 listed below who voted against the Treaty, please take a moment to call and thank him or her.

Obama Administration cooperates with the OIC's assault on free speech!
| |
Sec. of State Hillary Clinton delivers remarks at the December, 2011 meeting of the Istanbul Process
|
If you cherish our First Amendment right of free speech, we urge you, as strongly as we can, to read the article below by Nina Shea about the Istanbul Process (highlights added), which was recently posted on National Review Online.
For over 18 months now, the Obama administration has been working with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on what is known as the Istanbul Process. The Istanbul Process has evolved into an assault on our free speech so serious that next year ACT! for America will launch a national campaign to expose what is happening and fight back against it. It's simply not possible to overstate how serious a threat this is to our First Amendment.
|
You can help us prepare now for next year's national campaign, by making a year-end contribution to ACT! for America's 5th anniversary appeal, which we announced in September.
|
Simply go online here, make a $5 or more monthly commitment to ACT! for America's Patriot Partner program, or a $30 or more single gift. When you do, you'll be entered in a drawing to win one of two chances to have Brigitte Gabriel visit your community and meet with you and up to 25 of your friends. You can also make a single gift by printing out a reply form here and mailing your contribution.
|
We urge you, please, read the article below and help us prepare for next year's campaign to protect free speech with your most generous contribution. Because even if America succeeds in preventing every future terrorist attack, if we lose our freedom to speak out against radical Islam, a central tenet of sharia law will prevail in America and put a dagger in the heart of the First Amendment. Here's just one quote from the column below:
|
Judging from the 2011 session I was partially able to observe as a commissioner on the official U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, the point of the Istanbul Process is for the governments of the developed West [to] give an accounting to the governments of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, Qatar, and other key Muslim states on measures taken to stop American and other Western citizens from disparaging Islam.
|
America Again Submits to the Istanbul Process
Round three of the "Istanbul Process" opens today, December 3, and runs through Wednesday, at Canada House, in London, hosted by the U.K. and Canada. The Istanbul Process is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's major transnational law initiative, undertaken in partnership with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It was established last year to "implement" measures against speech and expression that negatively "stereotype[s]" Islam and Muslims, with a particular emphasis on enacting them in the West. This initiative was started as an inexplicable, gratuitous gift to the Muslim world following the March 2011 adoption of a non-binding U.N. Human Rights Council resolution (16/18) on the same theme. While the Obama administration claims that it doesn't intend for the process to adopt regulations beyond the American free-speech standard, our partner, the OIC, is only too eager to do just that. For over a decade within the U.N., the OIC has relentlessly pushed for a universal law to punish blasphemy, or "defamation," of Islam. This 56-member-state organization, an essentially religious body, is in fact chartered to "combat defamation of Islam." It issues fatwas and other directives to punish public expression of apostasy from Islam. Its current action plan calls for "deterrent punishments" in all states for "Islamophobia," a term that encompasses a broad range of constitutionally protected speech, judging from the OIC website's black list of Americans and other perpetrators of "Islamophobia." The OIC's stated understanding of the Istanbul Process is that it will "help in enacting domestic laws for the countries involved in the issue, as well as formulating international laws preventing inciting hatred resulting from the continued defamation of religions." Corner readers will remember that the Istanbul Process's first conference was co-chaired by Clinton and the OIC secretary general in July 2011, in Istanbul, with the foreign ministers of the Muslim countries in attendance. The second was held over three days of closed-door meetings last December, at the offices of the U.S. Department of State in Washington. That meeting drew enough controversy within free-speech circles to raise questions about whether the process would continue. But thanks to a leak last week by OIC head Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, we now know the event will go ahead, even if its agenda is still being treated like it's "classified." Judging from the 2011 session I was partially able to observe as a commissioner on the official U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, the point of the Istanbul Process is for the governments of the developed West give an accounting to the governments of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, Qatar, and other key Muslim states on measures taken to stop American and other Western citizens from disparaging Islam. This puts our diplomats in a tight spot: Unlike virtually every other country represented in the conference hall, America does not protect any religion or any other body of ideas from criticism and ridicule. However, when we're in the dock this time around, the U.S., represented by Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook, the administration's severely marginalized ambassador-at-large for religious freedom, will have some measure of "progress" to report. For example, the U.S.'s top intelligence official and its top commander in Afghanistan were again deployed to suppress blasphemy against Islam in Florida and, this time around, they succeeded. Last year, the efforts of our top authorities to stop Florida micro-church pastor Terry Jones from desecrating a Koran ended in failure. But this year, their resort to the "good offices" of Tampa socialite Jill Kelley proved an effective strategy. Her persuasive emails resulted in Florida talk-show host Bubba the Love Sponge's standing down from deep frying a Koran, something he had threatened to do on-air. The OIC's Ihsanoglu would likely rule Bubba was about to "abuse" freedom of expression by not being able (incontrovertibly, I should note) to pass a "responsible use" test. That leads to our next plea: The administration has also adopted the OIC's own standard of condemning the "abuse of free expression." Or at least that is what it appeared to do on the website of the pivotal U.S. embassy to Egypt on September 11 this year. Our embassy declared on its homepage: "We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others." But perhaps, the best evidence of America's "implementation" in response to the Istanbul Process is the Justice Department's dispatching the FBI a couple months ago to investigate Mark Basseley Youssef (a.k.a. Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, or Sam Bacile), the California Coptic filmmaker of "Innocence of Muslims," the YouTube trailer that blasphemed the Muslim prophet. As Ambassador Cook can point out, this investigation has resulted in a creative criminal conviction of Youssef, and his being sentenced by a federal court to a year in prison. All the better for the U.S.'s reputation as implementers is that it will be lost on the conferees that Youssef has been imprisoned on a probation offense, à la Al Capone - though, unlike Capone, his underlying offense, without which he would not have been investigated, was making a crude, insulting video, which is hardly equivalent in American law to gangland massacres or racketeering. It, in fact, is not a crime at all. Thus, most important, the OIC's take-away will be that in defense of Islam the U.S. government can and will regulate speech. Nevertheless, none of this is likely to impress the Istanbul Process gathering. On its opening day last December, Saudi Arabia - headquarters to and godfather of the OIC - beheaded a Sudanese woman for "sorcery." Last week, Egypt sentenced to death Youssef, Terry Jones, and six other Americans implicated in the blasphemous YouTube trailer. For the Istanbul Process that's "best practices" for "implementation." Thus, again, America will be judged to have fallen short, indignation will rise, and the Istanbul Process will need to ramp up its pressure. - Nina Shea is director of the Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom and co-author with Paul Marshall of Silenced: How Apostasy and Blasphemy Codes Are Choking Freedom Worldwide

The dilemma in Syria
Posted: 05 Dec 2012 02:41 PM PST
(Paul Mirengoff)
The Washington Post reports that the Syrian army is weakening and that the rebels are making gains. I don't dispute either proposition. However, we've seen variations on this story for more than a year, and Bashar Assad's regime still hasn't fallen.
Maybe the end is near, now that the rebels have gained the ability to counter the regime's air power by shooting down its helicopters and planes with shoulder-fired missiles. However, the Post acknowledges that that the fighting is likely to continue for months, if not years. Read More . . . A fatuous defense of Susan Rice Posted: 05 Dec 2012 09:44 AM PST (Paul Mirengoff) Kathleen Parker of the Washington Post rallies to the defense of Susan Rice with a column that rivals Dana Milbank's latest offering for fatuousness. Parker claims that the primary obstacle to Rice's confirmation as Secretary of State, should she be nominated, is the claim that she's unqualified. She then suggests that this view of Rice is sexist. Parker is wrong on both counts. First, the primary objection to Rice is the fact that she provided the public with information about the Benghazi attack that she either knew (probably) or should have known was false.
Read More . . . The clown prince "assigns" Mitt Romney a fool's errand Posted: 05 Dec 2012 08:54 AM PST (Paul Mirengoff) Dana Milbank, the Clown Prince of the Washington Post, assigns "a last public duty" to Mitt Romney. That assignment is "to step[] forward and to help find a way out of the fiscal standoff" by "return[ing] his party to reason."
Milbank doesn't define "reason." Instead, he ridicules Romney for accepting a position on the board of his longtime friend Bill Marriott, moving to California, and driving a foreign-made car.
There are several problems with Milbank's assignment to Romney. First, Romney's voice carries no weight with congressional Republicans. For Romney to act as if it does would be a fool's errand. The only impact would be to allow the likes of Milbank to attack congressional Republicans for not following the "voice of reason," suddenly represented by the recently-demonized Mitt Romney.

Victory: UN Agenda 21 Treaty Squashed
|
The United States Senate voted down the deceptively titled United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) treaty on Tuesday by a vote of 61-38. As anticipated, the vote was close but the 66,000 faxes that GrassTopsUSA members faxed to the Senate over the past several months (including the 28,000 faxed sent over the past several days) played a major role in convincing 38 of the 34 United States Senators needed to squash this treaty to stand firm in opposing this horrendous United Nations power-grab. Of course, the fact that all of the 53 Democrats and 8 Republicans-In-Name-Only [Ayotte (RINO-NH), Barrasso (RINO-WY), Brown (RINO-MA), Collins (RINO-ME), Lugar (RINO-IN), McCain (RINO-AZ), Murkowski (RINO-AK), Snowe (RINO-ME)] in United States Senate who voted to ratify a treaty that would have subordinated the sovereignty of the United States to the United Nations, is a sad sign that we have a great deal of work ahead of us as patriotic Americans seek to take back our nation, but a victory is a victory. Those of you who participated in our Blast Fax initiatives on CRPD or made phone calls to your Senators deserve undying thanks; you are all great Americans and this country owes you a huge debt of gratitude.

| Unemployment Benefits: No Free Lunch
Would spending more money on unemployment benefits create jobs? The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) thinks so.
According to a new CBO report, extending the current 73 weeks of unemployment insurance (UI) benefits would lead employers to create 300,000 new jobs.
This seems highly implausible. Economists widely agree that UI causes workers to spend more time unemployed.

| Understanding American Prosperity
If there is one outcome of liberty that makes possible all the rights Americans hold dear, it is prosperity. Prosperity gives us the chance to thrive and enjoy the blessings of liberty. Its precondition is economic freedom, the ability to profit from our own ideas and labor as we choose. Not only Americans but all people enjoy a right to economic freedom and the prosperity it brings. No authoritarian government has ever succeeded in delivering prosperity to successive generations. Only societies that embrace open markets, the rule of law, and democracy have seen more people prosper beyond the privileged few.

| Farm Subsidies Hurt the Poor
Got milk? The European Parliament sure does. European dairy farmers were in Brussels this week to protest proposed changes in dairy regulations. At the heart of both of these issues is the EU's massive and wasteful Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which in the span of a week seems to have enraged both British Prime Minister David Cameron and bovines in Bordeaux. What is lost in all of this is just how selfish and wasteful these agricultural policies are. Subsidies and price controls are protectionist measures that insulate European farmers from the world market, raising prices on foodstuffs and distorting the market for goods.

Rep. Hensarling Throws Boehner Under Bus on Conservative Purge |
|
by Matthew Boyle
A spokeswoman for incoming House Financial Services Committee chairman Rep. Jeb Hensarling told Breitbart News on Wednesday that her boss had nothing whatsoever to do with the conservative purge of his committee. Hensarling is slated to take over as the committee's chairman next Congress.
After conservative Republican Reps. David Schweikert of Arizona and Walter Jones of North Carolina were removed from their Financial Services committee slots this week, a GOP leadership aide tried to pin at least part of the blame on Hensarling.

News from The Hill:
Boehner warns GOP rank-and-file that leaders are watching their votes By Molly K. Hooper
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) warned his conference on Wednesday that leaders are watching how the rank-and-file vote to determine committee assignments, according to sources in the closed-door meeting.
Boehner addressed the firestorm over the removal of four lawmakers from plum committee assignments at the weekly GOP conference meeting.
According to Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.), one of the lawmakers denied a spot on his current committee in the next Congress, Boehner did note "that we [leadership] have punished four members, he claimed that it had nothing to do with their conservative ideology, but had to do with their voting patterns."
Huelskamp added that Boehner warned GOP lawmakers that "there may be more folks that will be targeted ... 'we're watching all your votes."

ObamaCare could be finished thanks to strong-arm tactics of its authors
Dec 05, 2012 05:13 am | Coach Collins
by Doug Book, staff writer
In an effort to intimidate states (that is, Republican governors) into setting up state-run ObamaCare exchanges, the leftist authors of the Affordable Care Act have opened the door to lawsuits which could prevent the federal government selling health plans at affordable rates.
A centerpiece of the ACA involves the offering of federal subsidies "...designed to help low and middle-income individuals purchase health insurance." However, as the Act clearly states, "...subsidies may only be applied to insurance exchanges set up by individual states, not exchanges implemented by the federal government." Congress also denied federal exchanges the authority to provide tax credits to employers who offer federally approved insurance plans to their employees. (1)
ObamaCare revolves around the state-financed implementation of exchanges which the law claims will be one-stop shopping centers for healthcare plans approved by the Department of Health and Human Services. However as of November 28th, 17 states have responded ... Continue Reading:ObamaCare could be finished thanks to strong-arm tactics of its authors

Obama Wants Power to Raise Debt Limit By Himself, Anytime
President Obama wants to do away with Congress when it comes to raising the country's legal debt limit. Instead of getting permission from the people's elected representatives to borrow and spend more money, he wants to do that all by himself. It seems typical of the President Obama we know, but just a few years ago, he spoke vehemently against putting America in debt. Here is then-Senator Barack Obama on March 16, 2006:
The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can't pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies.
Of course, in Washington, one's convictions can change with the electoral winds. And so this is the same man who today, as our President, is seeking unlimited authority to raise the country's debt limit anytime, anywhere, all by himself. No Congress needed. This new power is part of the "deal" the President offered to House Republicans on the fiscal cliff. His "deal" is massive tax hikes, more government spending, and the ability for him to send that government spending skyrocketing through the stratosphere without any vote of Congress. One White House official describes this proposal as "resolv[ing] the debt limit without drama." This issue has come up before. As Heritage's J.D. Foster wrote in 2011:
Congress could dispense with the periodic ritual of raising the debt limit. It could simply give Treasury the authority to borrow such funds as are needed to carry out the deficit consequences of current fiscal policy. This would be the easier course politically, but Congress has wisely chosen not to take it. The nation is far better served when Congress is forced to acknowledge the net effects of its policies as reflected in the necessity of raising the debt limit to maintain that course.
As unpleasant as it may be, congressional debate over increasing the debt limit is an opportunity for Congress to consider vital course corrections on federal spending, including entitlement spending, which is growing unchecked. Just a few short years ago, Obama said, "This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy" and that "interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans-a debt tax that Washington doesn't want to talk about." >>> See the Congressional Record where Obama speaks against raising the debt limit in 2006 That's a great point. Today, U.S. interest on debt payments is already greater than spending on many major federal agencies. In just a few years, Obama's policies will mean the U.S. will be spending more on just the interest than on our entire national defense budget. More recently, when he was running for President, Obama condemned George W. Bush for adding $4 trillion to the national debt over eight years, calling it "irresponsible" and "unpatriotic." Now-in the past four years-Obama's Administration has already added almost $6 trillion to the debt. That means he is on track to triple Bush's debt increase over eight years. But without congressional limits, who can say? In 2006, Obama concluded:
Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit.
We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

Ronald Reagan: Progressive Taxation Came Direct From Karl Marx By Terence P. Jeffrey "We have a tax machine that, in direct contravention of the Constitution, is not designed to solely raise revenue but is used, openly and admittedly, to control and direct the economy and to equalize the earnings of our people," Ronald Reagan said in 1961, in one of his greatest and most prophetic speeches. "Governments don't tax to get the money they need," he said. "Governments will always find a need for the money they get." The Costas Anti-Gun Lecture Series By L. Brent Bozell III On Saturday morning, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and shot himself in the head in the parking lot in front of his coaches. Wednesday, December 5, 2012 To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer Big Government Meets Big Business We're 26 days away from the fiscal cliff. Monday afternoon, the White House rejected a deal offered by the House Republican leadership. Not much happened yesterday. So you would think President Obama would be interested in talking with Speaker Boehner today. Nope. Instead the president took his arguments for higher taxes to the Business Roundtable -- the presidents and CEOs of many of the world's largest multinational corporations. It was a meeting of big government and big business. I know there is an assumption that big business is conservative, but that is not the case. Nearly half of the corporate sponsors to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest homosexual rights lobbying group, are members of the Business Roundtable. Several also donate to Planned Parenthood. The Business Roundtable was supportive of Obamacare. In fact, the big pharmaceutical companies were big cheerleaders for Obamacare. Several Business Roundtable CEOs backed Obama's cap and trade bill. And of course the stimulus bill was a major boon to Business Roundtable companies like General Electric, which landed big government contracts. While President Obama was meeting with presidents of the biggest multinational corporations, House Republican leaders were sitting down with small business owners, many of whom file their taxes as individuals, not corporations. They are the real job creators who will bear the brunt of Obama's tax increases. The contrast is striking. This is a good opportunity for Republicans to remind the American people that while they care strongly about pro-growth economic policies, they are adamantly opposed to crony capitalism. Nobody voted for the Business Roundtable last month. Its leadership should not sellout Main Street entrepreneurs and the taxpayers in order to feather their nests with future favors from Obama. Taxes And Savings It is widely agreed that the tax code is inefficient and in desperate need of reform. Republicans are eager to reform the tax code and would like to make tax reform part of the fiscal cliff deal. Unfortunately, higher tax rates have become a non-negotiable item for Barack Obama. But this insistence on higher rates has not always been Obama's bottom line. Consider this excerpt from a New York Times report yesterday:
"But since 2010, Mr. Obama and lawmakers in both parties have promoted ... the idea that Washington could overhaul the tax code, strip out deductions, tax credits, exemptions and loopholes and use the resulting revenues to both lower tax rates and reduce annual budget deficits. That idea was the core of recommendations from the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles fiscal commission in 2010 that Mr. Obama created... "Months later, when Mr. Obama was engaged in ultimately unsuccessful negotiations with Mr. Boehner on a debt-reduction deal in the summer of 2011, he recounted his pitch to Republicans for reporters: 'What we said was, give us $1.2 trillion in additional revenues, which could be accomplished without hiking taxes -- tax rates -- but could simply be accomplished by eliminating loopholes, eliminating some deductions and engaging in a tax reform process that could have lowered rates generally while broadening the base.'"
Friends, that was essentially the deal that Boehner offered Monday, and the White House flatly rejected it! Now, don't get me wrong -- I am not advocating for Boehner's deal. But I want you to understand what John Boehner and congressional conservatives are dealing with here. Negotiating with Obama is like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall! The deal Obama wanted last year suddenly isn't good enough this year. This is why many conservatives are increasingly convinced that Obama and his fellow Democrats really don't want a deal. Even moderate establishment-types like David Gergen, who said the Democrats are trying to "humiliate" the GOP, can see it. Meanwhile, the Washington Post Fact Checker is taking issue with the so-called "spending cuts" in Obama's plan. For example, the Post says that $61 billion in supposed savings really comes from a "financial crisis responsibility fee." $43.7 billion comes from increased IRS enforcement, meaning more audits. And then there is $44 billion in "savings" from an "adjustment payment timing." Any idea what that means? The Post rightly describes it as "especially dubious," because it is merely delaying a $44 billion payment from one ten-year budget period into the next ten-year budget period and counting that as a "savings." It would be like delaying your $500 car payment this month until January and claiming you saved $500 in December. Only in liberal Washington! The War On Christmas What is wrong with America's elites? No doubt many of you will recall last year's spectacle in Rhode Island when Governor Lincoln Chafee caved in to political correctness and decided to call the state's Christmas tree a "holiday tree." When it came time for the official lighting of the state's "holiday tree," scores of irate citizens showed up and began singing "O Christmas Tree." Oh, the horror! In order to avoid a repeat performance of "O Christmas Tree" at this year's lighting ceremony, Chafee devised a devious plan. His office provided the public just 30 minutes advance notice of the ceremony. What a scrooge! Lincoln Chafee used to be a United States Senator and a Republican. His father was a senator too. But Chafee left the GOP, embarrassed by its conservatism, and is now a left-leaning Independent. His blue-blood New England family no doubt named him after the country's first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln's second inaugural address was one of the shortest inaugural addresses in history, yet he included more than a dozen references to God and the Bible. I wonder what Abraham Lincoln would think about a future namesake who was so committed to stripping religion out of the public square that he tried to light the "holiday tree" without anyone noticing? I know it's easy to laugh at this kind of absurdity, but this cultural rot is really quite dangerous. A party, a movement, even a civilization that is afraid to defend its values will not survive.
