The Jihad and Christopher Stevens (Part II)

Part I 

 

To attempt to understand Christopher Stevens' long-standing interest in ben Qumu, the al Qaeda terrorist suspected of leading the Benghazi attack on September 11, 2012 in which Stevens and three other Americans were murdered, we must seek context in more of Stevens' cables. (Thanks be to Wikileaks.)

 

On February 15, 2008, Stevens wrote a lengthy cable titled EXTREMISM IN EASTERN LIBYA. On one level it confirms that Stevens was NOT some liberal naif when he docked in Benghazi in April 2011 to serve as point man to the so-called "rebels"-- that cutesy bluff of a name which disguises a movement better described by Clare M. Lopez as "individuals and groups that were, at a minimum, allied ideologically with Al Qaeda." No real stretch to simplify and call Stevens the Obama administration's point man to al Qaeda.

 

This early 2008 cable recounts the analysis of a US-Libyan dual national who regularly visited eastern Libya concerning the "social, political and economic factors that have contributed to and faciliated participation by a disproportionately large number of eastern Libya's native sons in `martyrdom acts' and other insurgency operations in eastern Libya."

 

Notice what's missing from the list -- Islam. It's not completely missing, of course. Stevens makes note of mosques and "radical" imams who use "phraseology urging worshippers to support jihad in Iraq and elsewhere through direct participation and financial contributions." Islam itself, however, never is discussed as the doctrinal motivation for jihad "martyrdom." The following line sums up how it is that the centrality of jihad in Islam is circumvented: "Citing conversations with relatives, [redacted] said the unemployed, disenfranchised young men of eastern Libya had `nothing to lose' and are therefore `willing for sacrifice themselves' for something greater than themselves by engaging in extremism in the name of religion."

 

The cable also opens a window onto the ordinariness of this hate-filled pathology among the people of the region. Stevens' source describes a large dinner he attended in Derna -- hometown of ben Qumu and hotbed, bar none, of jihad-in-Iraq recruitment -- hosted by a family friend. "Conversation among the mostly middle-aged male group of guests focused on news that two young men from Derna had recently killed themseles in suicide operations in Iraq. Dinner guests offered a mix of `condolences and congratulations.' " The source "said he was struck by the level [of] sentiment against Coalition forces in Iraq, and by the obvious pride the dinner guests took in the fact that two of their native sons had `struck a blow' against `occupying Crusader forces in Iraq.' He emphasized that the dinner was one of the relatively few occasions in Libya in which he felt uncomfortable by dint of having US citizenship."

 

Stevens later being point man to the "rebels" would mean being point man also to these dinner guests, still swelled with pride over maiming and killing American troops in Iraq. Such is the poisonous essence of "Arab Spring."

Why Obama Chose to Let Them Die in Benghazi

The burning question is why Obama didn't give orders to defend our consulate and American lives in Benghazi. The answer is becoming clearer each time President Obama and Secretary of Defense Panetta issue a denial or explanation of their inaction.

 

To the president's surprise, he chanced on an honest reporter during a local interview on the campaign trail in Denver. On October 26, for the first time, Obama was asked directly about the explosive reports on CBS and Fox News, a week earlier, that the CIA and our military denied direct requests for help by the Americans fighting for their lives during the seven-hour battle in Benghazi.

 

Denver TV's Kyle Clark twice tried to pin Obama down by asking the key question: "Were they denied requests for help during the attack?"

 

Obama's answer is the proof of his guilt, and it gives us a clue as to the doctrine informing his decision to do nothing. The most damaging part of Obama's evasive answer is this:

... the minute I found out what was happening, I gave three very clear directives. Number one, make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to. ... I guarantee you that everyone in the state department, our military, the CIA, you name it, had number-one priority making sure that people were safe.

This is the blatant lie that condemns the liar. The president says here that immediately, "the minute I found out what was happening," he gave the order to the military, the CIA, to everyone, to secure our personnel in Benghazi and do "whatever we need to."

Yet the undeniable fact is that nothing was done.

Romney Rally Draws 25,000

Supporters braved cold temperatures and long lines to hear the former Massachusetts governor speak.

 

Campaign officials said 35,000 tickets to the event were reserved online in advance. The crowd was estimated to be around 25,000.

 

Governor Tom Corbett introduced Romney. Senator Pat Toomey and Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick also spoke.

Doctors are under attack by democrats, just like some of the churches. Though none of my many doctors signed this open letter, I know for sure that all are in full agreement with everything it says.

 

It appears in the Sunday Inquirer (today), on the back page of section B.  If you know any undecideds, please show them this email or buy a copy of the paper to show them. It's very important to realize that the docs are now responding to the threats of this government.

SENIORS: Alarming Problems Made Life Threatening


There is already a looming doctor shortage of more than 100,000 physicians in the next ten years. Many of you on Medicare are already facing difficulty finding a doctor. Now it will become far worse.


The law takes $716 billion out of Medicare over 10 years to help fund a huge expansion of taxpayer subsidies for health coverage. Drastic , below-cost, Medicare cuts will force increasing numbers of doctors and hospitals to drop Medicare or unable to accept new Medicare patients.


Universal coverage is meaningless if you have to wait months for an appointment or can not find a doctor at all.


ObamaCare Fails its Primary Goal - Universal Coverage


For these and many other reasons, the physicians who signed this letter and thousands more across the nation believe that the PPACA (ObamaCare) must be repealed. It is dangerous to your health and the financial health and well being of this country.


It must be replaced with patient-centered (not bureaucrat-centered) reforms which will preserve the patient-physician relationship, and enhance high quality, affordable health care.


Detailed, alternative economically sound, responsible reform plans are available and would achieve these goals, but the law must be first over-turned by removing President Obama and all of his other supporters of this dangerous law from elected office and paving the way for real reform.

 

 

Some of the Worst ObamaCare Rumors are True


"Bureaucrats & Non-Physician Panels Dictate Health Care Policy" When fully implemented, ObamaCare will create a myriad of new federal boards, agencies, commissions and panels - 159 and counting- to over-see and which can over-rule our medical judgement and affect your care.


"Death Panels that withhold care from too old or too sick" The Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB): 15 unelected bureaucrats (who do not have to be medical professionals), will be tasked with reducing Medicare spending, mostly by determining payment cuts for seniors' care. These determinations cannot be challenged except by Congressional action, thereby making health care a political football every election, since their rulings will determine what procedures and care Medicare will fund - and, more importantly, what it will NOT fund.


After passing a 2,000 page law, writing over 12,000 pages of regulations (so far), and spending trillions of dollars over the next decade, the Government Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reports that 26 million Americans will still not have coverage.

 


Doctors & Politics Don't Mix


Doctors don't spend 13 years or more training to treat patients to offend half with our politics. Most of us have been silent.


Mountains of government regulations and restrictions piled on relentlessly over the past 50 years have driven up the prices of medical services, and the cost of health insurance beyond the affordable range for many. Most of us have been silent.


They have created protected monolithic in-state monopolies of third party payer companies employing armies of life time government and pseudo-governmental paper-pushing middlemen: billers, coders, and auditors who add to the cost, but not the quality of our medical services as doctors. Most of us have been silent.


The miracle of modern American medicine is directly tied to the miracle of America. The same freedoms that made the microwave oven, the iPad, and the internet created an enviroment that made American medicine the envy of the earth.


The free market combined with our hippocratic oath brought health outcomes to America that still draw the sick from around the world and fuel our armies of compassion with therapies and cures across the globe.


Silent No More...


The Democrats in this season of America's political life will not listen to the Physicians actually practicing medicine.

The Most Devastating Anti-Obama Election Video of 2012? You Decide

A scathing video review of President Barack Obama's first term is sweeping the internet less than two days before the most important presidential election in a generation. The video, titled "Conservatism Is Calling," outlines Obama's broken promise to bring "hope and change" to Washington D.C.

 

The video, which currently has more than 500,000 views on YouTube, also highlights a number of Obama's empty pledges he made on the campaign trail in 2008. Obama can be seen promising to "fundamentally transform the United States of America," pledging to cut the federal deficit in half, fix the economy and reign in unemployment in his first term. While he did make good on his promise to "transform" the nation, it wasn't in the way that many had hoped.

 

He called the Bush administration "unpatriotic" for running up massive annual deficits. However, as the YouTube video points out, Obama's deficit at $1.3 trillion in 2012 alone was more than four years under former President George W. Bush combined. The video also indicates that Obama missed his pledge to cut the deficit in half by 500 percent.

Dear Pennsylvania Friends,

   

Our nation and the values we hold dear are under assault like never before. We must make sure that November 6, 2012 is known as the day we began to restore our nation. Your commitment between now and November 6 and on Election Day is critical.

   

United States President:

The defeat of President Obama is of utmost importance if we have any hope of stopping ObamaCare, halting the overreach of the administrative state, and restoring fiscal sanity. Governor Romney's pick of Paul Ryan and his "believe in America" campaign gives us renewed hope that America can be restored.

 

United States Senate:

It is critical to regain control of the United States Senate. That is why Tom Smith must be elected. As a husband, parent, farmer, equipment operator, and business owner Tom Smith is committed to cap the future growth of spending, passing a balanced budget amendment, and the protection of Life, our individual rights, and America's national sovereignty.

   

U.S. House of Representatives:

If we are to have a chance of restoring our liberties, including the repeal of ObamaCare, it is critical to maintain and add to the Republican majority in the House. There are three "row office" elections in Pennsylvania that demand your consideration.

   

  1. Attorney General: Mr. David Freed, of Camp Hill, joined the Cumberland County district attorney's office in 1998, advanced from assistant to become DA in 2006, winning elections in 2007 and in 2011. He brings significantly more managerial experience than his Democrat opponent to this important position. Remember it is the Attorney General who must defend Pennsylvania from an overreaching federal government.
  2. State Treasurer: Diana Irey Vaughan, has fought hard to protect the citizens of Washington County. As a County Commissioner, seven consecutive budgets were balanced and a top-performing pension fund was managed without raising taxes. She is a strong opponent of "pay-to-play" politics.
  3. Auditor General: Mr. John Maher is a practicing CPA, making him uniquely qualified for the position of Auditor General. As a CPA, John Maher launched and ran one of the largest CPA firms dedicated to auditing public institutions in Pennsylvania. As a member of the Pennsylvania legislature John wrote Pennsylvania's Open Records Law and the Audit Integrity Act.

   

As advocates of limited government it is important to make sure that we elect these experienced professionals.

   

Pennsylvania House members and half of the Pennsylvania Senate members are up for election to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Several key races are particularly close and demand your attention.

   

In the Pennsylvania Senate, D. Raja (PA Senate District 37) is a local entrepreneur and successful CEO. He will be a true reformer. Raja will actually refuse the legislative pension until pensions are reformed in Pennsylvania.

 

In the Pennsylvania House, recently elected and up for re-election for the first time are the following reformers: George Dunbar (District 56) -- Eli Evankovich (District 54) -- Rick Saccone (District 39)

 

Of particular note is the PA House race in District 16. Kathy Coder, an experienced businesswoman, community council member, and council president will be a reformer in Harrisburg. Kathy will refuse the legislative pension, taxpayer-funded car, and support term limits.

 

Remember that Washington and Harrisburg will not change unless we change the people we are sending and retain the good people that we have elected in previous elections.

 

Pray for this Election and work like you have never worked before.

Election Day is only a week away but in many states, early voting is available now. To learn where the candidates stand on critical issues that should unite Christian voters, I urge you visit the AFA Voter Guide today at www.AFAAction.net. Although the AFA Voter Guide is comprehensive (with information gathered on over 6,000 candidates), simply enter the address where you are registered to vote to find specific candidates you will be voting for on Tuesday, November 6.

 

If you can vote early in your state, please take advantage of the opportunity so that something doesn't happen on Election Day to keep you from voting in this critical election. Simply not voting is a cop-out, not an option. "Christians who boycott voting," says Russell D. Moore, dean of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, are "more akin to Pontius Pilate washing his hands rather than John the Baptist taking on the powers-that-be..." One of the two major presidential candidates will be the next president. "None of the above" is not on the ballot.

 

I've tried to balance the call to vote and pray for this critical election. The Presidential Prayer Team has these recommendations for prayer:

  • Pray for your choices and ask God to lead you as you vote.
  • Pray that integrity and honesty will prevail in the voting process.
  • Pray for the protection and accurate counting of every ballot, including absentee and military ballots (although the current administration has been attempting to suppress the latter).
  • Pray that those who believe in prayer will turn out at the polls to ensure their Christian values are voiced and protected.

We only have 7 days to rally Christian voters! In many races, the election will come down to voter turnout and I'm counting on AFA supporters to make a real difference in the outcome. On Tuesday evening, we will all be celebrating a landslide victory for the Republicans in Bucks & Montgomery Counties, Pennsylvania and nationwide.

Others will not be so fortunate.

Residents of Staten Island, along with other New Yorkers, New Jerseyans and Pennsylvanians are still suffering with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

One of our KTP volunteers' hometown is Staten Island and we'll be taking a collection to help the people in her old neighborhood.


Here are some ideas of things we can donate:
Bleach, gloves, tools, water, socks, underwear, blankets, all hygiene items, dry shampoo, paper masks, batteries, flashlights, trash bags, non-perishable food items etc. Staten Islanders have said they have not seen Red Cross trucks or any help. Please help them!

Let's help these people directly and reinvigorate the spirit of "community" which the progressives/liberals have confused with "government".

When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems.

I looked at online customer reviews (which were very good). I read all of iGive's fine print, such as Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. I signed up and even emailed two tech support questions to see how good their tech support was.

And the more I dug, the more I liked what I saw. For instance, both of my tech support questions were responded to within 60 minutes. How often does THAT happen?

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.

 

The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.

 

Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.

 

Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.

 

The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.

 

The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.

 

The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

Why Senior Citizens Should Prefer Ryan's Medicare Plan To Obama's

 

DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described the Medicare reforms proposed by GOP Vice-Presidential nominee and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) as "literally a death trap for seniors." White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that Ryan's reforms would "change Medicare as we know it."

 

But it was Obamacare that already changed Medicare as we know it, transforming it literally into a death trap for seniors. Obamacare cut Medicare by $716 billion over the next 10 years alone, mostly by slashing Medicare payments to doctors and hospitals. And that is just a down-payment on what is to come.

THERE IS A GROWING awareness among Americans that religious freedom in our country has come under sustained pressures. In the public square where freedom of religion meets public policy, it becomes clearer all the time that there is a high price to be paid for being true to one's conscience. This is no tale of Chicken Little-although a chain of chicken sandwich restaurants based in Atlanta is part of the story. Let me give you a few examples.

 

In our universities, those citadels of toleration, we find that toleration can be sharply limited. At the Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, the student chapter of the Christian Legal Society was denied any status on the campus because it would not abandon its requirement that members commit themselves to traditional Christian norms regarding sexual morality. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling in 2010, held that the student group's rights were not violated by a "take all comers" policy. Following this lead, Vanderbilt University has rewritten its student organizations policy and effectively chased every traditionally Christian student group off campus, denying them regular access to campus facilities. And at the University of Illinois, an adjunct professor of religion, hired to teach a course on Catholicism, was let go because a student complained about his patient explanation of the Catholic Church's natural law teachings on human sexuality. (He was later restored to his teaching duties, but at the expense of the Newman Center, not on the state payroll.)

Is America Exceptional?

The following is adapted from a speech delivered on September 20, 2012, in Washington, D.C., at Hillsdale College's third annual Constitution Day Dinner.

 

ONCE UPON A TIME, hardly anyone dissented from the idea that, for better or worse, the United States of America was different from all other nations. This is not surprising, since the attributes that made it different were vividly evident from the day of its birth. Let me say a few words about three of them in particular.

 

First of all, unlike all other nations past or present, this one accepted as a self-evident truth that all men are created equal. What this meant was that its Founders aimed to create a society in which, for the first time in the history of the world, the individual's fate would be determined not by who his father was, but by his own freely chosen pursuit of his own ambitions. In other words, America was to be something new under the sun: a society in which hereditary status and class distinctions would be erased, leaving individuals free to act and to be judged on their merits alone. There remained, of course, the two atavistic contradictions of slavery and the position of women; but so intolerable did these contradictions ultimately prove that they had to be resolved-even if, as in the case of the former, it took the bloodiest war the nation has ever fought.

 

Secondly, in all other countries membership or citizenship was a matter of birth, of blood, of lineage, of rootedness in the soil. Thus, foreigners who were admitted for one reason or another could never become full-fledged members of the society. But America was the incarnation of an idea, and therefore no such factors came into play. To become a full-fledged American, it was only necessary to pledge allegiance to the new Republic and to the principles for which it stood.

 

Thirdly, in all other nations, the rights, if any, enjoyed by their citizens were conferred by human agencies: kings and princes and occasionally parliaments. As such, these rights amounted to privileges that could be revoked at will by the same human agencies. In America, by contrast, the citizen's rights were declared from the beginning to have come from God and to be "inalienable"-that is, immune to legitimate revocation.

Stop The U.N. From Influencing Our Election!

The international community is thrilled with Barack Obama and the United Nations, especially, loves his weakness. They would love to see him in control for another four years. That is why the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights has warned Americans not to elect Mitt Romney because to do so would be "a democratic mandate for torture." Just as Obama uses "emergencies" to impose his radical agenda, the United Nations is claiming the American people will be much less safe if Romney is elected, because he has refused to rule out the use of waterboarding in interrogating terror suspects.

The U.N. apparently did not notice, or do not care, that our Libyan Ambassador and three of his American colleagues were recently killed because the Obama administration did nothing. To the U.N., the United States of America are the terrorists.

 

In all their actions, the U.N. has put us on notice that we are on the verge of a takeover by them. Little by little, global bureaucrats, emboldened by the encouragement of our current President, are looking for ways to regulate and weaken the American way of life. One of the first places they can start is by tampering with our elections!





The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is running a "mission" to monitor our 2012 elections and report back to the international community about their security and integrity. These monitors from the U.N. were asked to be here by the ACLU, NAACP and The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights because these liberal groups are concerned about "a coordinated political effort to disenfranchise millions of Americans - particularly traditionally disenfranchised groups like minorities."

 

If they truly want to examine the voter suppression, they could talk about the voting machines in swing states that have been erroneously registering votes for Obama after the voter pulled the switch for Romney. But of course, they aren't interested in that; they only want Barack Obama to win. Freedom and democracy are not an issue. They have spent the year arguing against voter ID laws. And now the U.N. representatives sent to oversee our voting process hail from liberal and oppressed countries like France (which elected the Socialist Party this year) and "not free" or "partly free" countries like Belarus and Kazakhstan.

The United Nations has no business butting into our affairs, but they continue to paint us as the enemy and remain quite disdainful of our capitalist society. Their definition of "social justice" is taking America's wealth and redistributing it around the world-and then, rearranging our society to ensure no one ever acquires wealth again! And, of course, they expect us to fund whatever program they come up with. Barack Obama believes wholly in this vision of redistribution.

 

Now, two weeks before our very important presidential election, the United Nations is weighing in on what THEY BELIEVE American voters should do. And they have sent representatives working hand in hand with far Left organizations to see that their interests are satisfied.

 

States like Texas and Iowa are fighting back, warning that OSCE observers will be arrested if they violate state election law and come within 100 feet of polling places (in Texas) and 300 feet (in Iowa).

 

Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz said, "Iowa law is very specific about who is permitted at polling places, and there is no exception for members of this group." And Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said, "[G]roups and individuals from outside the United States do not have jurisdiction to interfere with Texas elections."

 

But Barack Obama's administration jumped in and said U.N. observers have "full immunity" from being arrested. Obama is more interested in protecting his job and the rights of international workers than he is a citizen of the United States. That is why he is enjoying very high approval ratings around the world, but not here at home where it matters.

The United Nations is working behind the scenes of communities across America, with the support of George Soros, to fundamentally change the way you live. The U.N. passed their Small Arms Treaty weeks ago, which will disarm and weaken America. The International Telecommunications Union is going to meet next month to discuss an international Internet fee. Agenda 21 is being implemented now in many towns across America, forcing regulatory changes in the name of "sustainability" that will impact your property rights, your transportation options, and even how many children you choose to have. If we do not get Congress to act soon, we will witness United Nations rule!

 

It may seem crazy that our "leaders" would allow a world body like the United Nations to decimate our rights, but it is definitely not out of the question, especially with Barack Obama in the White House! He was raised by people who disliked what America stood for, and all his actions and associations since then have demonstrated that he does not identify with the United States, nor does he feel pride in the American culture.

 

Please help Conservative Daily fight for the passage of S. 2205 and H.R. 4846, bills that will protect our Second Amendment from any U.N. treaty and keep our sovereignty in place. We need to pass these bills and other legislation like it that keeps our Constitution the supreme law of the land and kicks international bureaucrats out of our government!

 

Our current President will not honor our Constitution or the Founders' ideals for America, and he will certainly not place boundaries on U.N. involvement in our affairs. He has proven that during this election season by backing up United Nations officials and not American states that are trying to run a fair, democratic process!

 

Congress needs to get engaged on these issues, and quickly. As proud citizens of this great nation, we must fight for our Constitution and remind our leaders to do the same.

Union thugs arrested for theft of Romney signs 

More evidence that the Obama campaign and their allies in the union allies will stoop to new lows in order to preserve their power:
PA Coalition members across Pennsylvania are reporting massive thefts of Romney/Ryan signs, in many cases directly out of private yards.
Allegations of direct involvement by labor unions along with payments to union members to take down Romney signs have been made and now we find corroborating evidence. Our friends at the Ohio Liberty Coalition released the following press release concerning the arrest last night of union members driving a union owned pick up truck filled with Romney/Ryan signs.
There is no reason to believe that the same union actions are not occurring here in Pennsylvania. Please make sure that your neighbors, children, parents and business associates (that are suppporters of limited government) vote on Tuesday.
Perrysburg Police Arrest Four with Stolen Romney Signs
Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio Liberty Coalition today released a police report from the arrest at 1:00 AM Friday morning by the Perrysburg Police Department of four males, driving in a Ford F-150 Pickup that was filled with stolen Romney campaign signs. The truck's owner is the Sheet Metal Workers International, Union Local 33 in Parma, OH. (Police Report Attached as PDF) Many of the stolen signs were believed to have been put up by members of the Northwest Ohio Conservative Coalition according to John McAvoy the President of the Group.

RedState Morning Briefing

 

Folks,

 

Forgive my intrusion into your life on a weekend, but after mulling it over, I wanted to go on and send this to you.  Consider it, if nothing else, a weekend devotional.

 

I believe Mitt Romney will win on election day. I'm somewhat stunned to be writing that as I never really thought he could win until about the moment Clint Eastwood trotted out on stage at the Republican National Convention with that empty chair. Even now I waver by the hour, but if forced to predict, I think Romney wins Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, Wisconsin, and even Ohio. I put the Electoral College at 285 to 253. Ask me tomorrow, though, and I could decide otherwise. I cast my absentee ballot last week and voted for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

 

I write the rest of this now because if Romney loses, it will be viewed as "Erickson is trying to talk them off the ledge" and if Romney wins it will be viewed as "Erickson is rubbing salt in wounds." Neither is true, which is why this must come before the election and not after.

 

I get the enormity of what is at stake in the election. I get it. I really do. I get the passion. I get the excitement. But, and maybe I'm just too worn out, I don't get the anger, worry, and dread on either side. I have friends upset with me for not getting it and for not sharing it. "Don't you know what is at stake?" they demand.

Don't you know what is not at stake?

 

People on the left are convinced if Mitt Romney wins blacks will be put in chains out in cotton fields and uteruses will be locked up.

 

People on the right are convinced if Barack Obama wins the stars and stripes will come down, the red banner of communism will go up, and this American experiment will be promptly concluded.

 

My world view is pretty simple. I think this world is destined to go to hell in a hand basket by design. I think things are supposed to go to pot. So if Barack Obama wins, I won't be upset. If Mitt Romney wins, I won't be running through the streets cheering. I think, either way, it is all part of the design. The world is going down hill. Barack Obama re-elected just gets us down the slippery slope faster in my view. For others, it is Mitt Romney who does.

 

God is sovereign and He is in charge and He will return. That is my hope and my ever present expectation.

 

We often get so wrapped up in the view of things at ground level, we forget to look at the world from 50,000 feet. In the historic, grand scheme of things, this too will end.

 

Don't confuse me with a fatalist and don't confuse me with someone who does not really care about the future of our nation. I think we are the last best hope of mankind on this planet. But my destiny is not tied to this planet. While I am here, however, I have convictions that are greater than either candidate and either party and I fight more for a cause than a candidate. I expect, regardless of who is in the White House, I'll find myself at odds with them, though more so with Obama than Romney.

 

When I wake up on Wednesday morning, I'm still going to have my wife. I'm still going to have my kids. I'm still going to have my family. And I'm still going to have my God. So will you.

 

Some of you, on both sides, are convinced that the end of the world is nigh. It is. But not quite yet and no one really knows when.

 

What I do know for sure is that I'm headed home to eternity and this world is temporary. So while I like politics and have my side and want it to win, I'm not going to be partying in the street if my side does win and I'm not going to think the end of the world is upon us if my side loses.

 

You should not either.

 

Too many of my friends have gotten so focused on the outcome and are so convinced the country as they know it is over if the other side wins that they are joyless to be around right now. They are full of dread and worry and fear. They've lost their sense of humor. They cannot laugh at themselves, their side, or much of anything. They are mad at others, myself included, for not being as worked up as they are. The frenzy has become a purity test, not the conviction.

 

God is sovereign. And whether you are for Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, set your sights on God, not November 6th, and be happy. In four years, we really will do this all over again whether right now you think so or not. There is no permanence except in Heaven.

 

These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

1. No, Independents Are Not Just Discouraged Republicans

The centerpiece of my thesis (discussed here and here) that Mitt Romney will win Tuesday's election is his consistently strong showing among independent voters (ie, voters who identify as neither Republicans nor Democrats) across the majority of national and state polls, pretty much regardless of whether those are polls he's winning or losing. On that score, I believe the polls; if they're wrong about the independent vote, my analysis is essentially irrelevant. But if they're right, I believe I'll be proven right. 2. An Election Night Primer on the House Races

There's been a lot of attention focused on the race for the Senate this year.  The House races, on the other hand, have become a forgotten footnote on the 2012 election map.  The reason is quite simple: Republicans will retain control of the House, irrespective of the outcome of the presidential election.

4.  Wisconsin Early Voting Gains Solid in GOP Areas

Preliminary and limited data samples indicate that in Wisconsin early voting has tended to increase more in Republican leaning areas than Democratic leaning areas headed into the November 6th election. Wisconsin does not track voters with partisan voter registration and all early voting reporting is done at the municipal level, making it difficult to gather broad samples of early voting data headed into the final weekend of the campaign. What the limited data does show is that early voters in traditional GOP strongholds are turning out in higher numbers than in 2008, while Democratic strongholds are turning out a statistically smaller increase.  . . . please click here for the rest of the post  

 

5. FieldWorks, SEIU, AFL-CIO, Colorado Civic Engagement Roundtable, and Colorado's ACORN Ground Game

A coalition of unions has coordinated with FieldWorks, a Washington-based consulting firm, to provide ground support for President Obama and liberal Colorado candidates. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU), AFL-CIO and the Colorado Civic Engagement Roundtable have retained FieldWorks, an organization with many similarities to the now-defunct Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), according to documents uncovered by Media Trackers.

 

FOX News is now reporting that Ohio officials are reviewing "roughly 200 voter registrations that election officials say were flagged as possibly fraudulent, forged, or duplicated by the group that collected them, FieldWorks, a private Washington, D.C. based firm."  . . . please click here for the rest of the post

We Are Those Who Stand for the Day

We face two conflicts in the present day and against the present day. Both conflicts are being fought against ideologies dislocated in time, longing urgently for the past and the future.
 
Islamism is a reactionary ideology preaching a perfect world to be gained by stepping back to the 7th Century origins of its founding and seeks to recreate it by enslaving women and non-Muslims, making Mohammed's false treaties with Christians and Jews, this time no longer in Arabia, but around the world, and then subjugating them to usher in an age of perfect peace.
 
Progressivism looks for its utopias not in the splendors of the past, but in the wonders of the future, its fanaticism fueled by the wonders of the emerging technologies of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries fused with the delusion that these material technologies could be matched by social technologies of equal depth and effectiveness, bringing forth both a technocratic utopia of physical technology and social technology.
 
Utopianism is a matter of faith and perspective. One man's utopia is another man's nightmare. And like many matters of faith, those who cannot be convinced must often be compelled.

Arab Spring Has Reached Kuwait

More than 10.000 Kuwaitis gathered on the 21st of October 2012, in front of Qasr el Seef, the administration center of the Emir, demanding real democracy in Kuwait. They also objected to the electoral "reform", which are intended to come up with a government-friendly parliament.

Most of Kuwaitis are not demanding the removal of Al Sabah family as rulers of the country, like the Egyptians, Tunisians, and Libyans did. They simply want to have a functioning democracy, representative and transparent. The majority of Kuwaitis want the prime minister and cabinet be appointed by a freely elected parliament and not one selected and imposed by the Emir.

Waleed Al Tabtaba'i, an Islamist opposition leader, came up with the slogan, "Have the Emirate and leave us the government."

Thus the Arab Spring has also reached Kuwait.

The New Sharia Egypt

The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt announced Wednesday, according to the Associated Press, that it was "committed to enshrining Islamic Shariah law as the main source of a new constitution, seeking to mollify ultraconservative Islamists who accuse the group of not advocating strongly enough for Islamic rule." It is hard to see how anyone can accuse the Muslim Brotherhood of not acting quickly enough to bring Sharia to Egypt, but if the group was indeed hesitating in any way, it is no longer. And thus we shall soon come to the crowning end of Barack Obama's "Arab Spring" foreign policy.

Obama, it must be recalled, applauded the "Arab Spring" from the beginning. He spoke with satisfaction in February 2011 about "the peaceful transition to democracy" that was taking place in Egypt, and said that he was pleased that "the change that is taking place across the region is being driven by the people of the region. This change doesn't represent the work of the United States or any foreign power. It represents the aspirations of people who are seeking a better life." He vowed that "throughout this time of transition, the United States will continue to stand up for freedom, stand up for justice, and stand up for the dignity of all people."

The one thing the President didn't explain was his justification for believing that the Egyptian people actually cared as much as he assumed they did in principles and rights such as the freedom of speech and the dignity of all people, both of which are mitigated under Islamic law. Nor did Obama touch on why he assumed that they held an understanding of freedom and justice that was remotely comparable to that of the American constitutional system.

Several days after the NCW (Egypt's "National Council of Women) lodged its complaint about the prospect of child marriage being enshrined in Egypt's new constitution, the Cairo-based Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression held a press conference to protest against the arrest by Egyptian authorities of atheist activist Alber Saber.

Saber, according to Egypt Independent, "was originally arrested over claims that he published the anti-Islam film 'Innocence of Muslims' on Facebook, but when it emerged that there was no evidence to support the claim, he was later charged on the basis of an atheist video that he had made." After Saber's Muslim neighbors heard the claim that he had shared the video on Facebook, a mob stormed his house - whereupon police arrested not the rioters, but Saber himself. Saber's mother, Kariman Meseha, explained: "Police forces told me that he would be taken to the police station to protect him from the angry mob, and that I could come by the police station the next day to receive him." But when she did, she found that he was being held on charges of blasphemy.

Sharia enforcers bring ugly, angry noises: Cries of "Allahu Akbar" as a church is attacked. Slashes of swords and blood-gargling death. The throb of Antonovs circling in the sky. The delicate swoosh of a cluster bomb before impact and release of deadly shrapnel and ball bearings. They leave in their wake the sounds of their victims: Cries of anguish. Wails of desolation and grief.

But Sharia enforcers also bring ugly and angry silence: The silence of freedom suppressed. The deadly pall of dreams extinguished. The sealed lips of unwilling submission and of death. And, in the recently overtaken West African nation of Mali, Sharia has brought an unexpected silence. It has stopped the music that is the lifeblood and identity of the country.

An October 23 Guardian article about the actions of the jihadists that have invaded northern Mali begins with a truckload of militants driving to the northern Mali desert town of Kidal, home of members of "Tinariwen," a Grammy award-winning band. In a country famous for its contributions to West African culture, the Islamists had come to implement a ban on all Western music.

Unemployment Is Up -- Will Obama Be Out?

Is Obama sunk?

The much-awaited and final pre-election Bureau of Labor unemployment numbers were released this morning, and, for what that malleable number is worth, the rate ticked back up to 7.9 percent, taking some of the wind out of Barack Obama's "road to recovery" rhetoric.

Though Obama will find a way to take credit for private sector job growth with his socialist "we've created jobs" mantra, the fact is that job creation is more accurately a reflection of how resilient the private sector is despite Obama's interventionist economic policies.

As you recall, a few weeks before the Republican Convention in Tampa, Obama declared, "The private sector is doing fine," and insisted that we really need more government [read "union"] jobs. His Senate lap dog, Harry Reid, reiterated, "It's very clear that private sector jobs have been doing just fine. It's the public sector jobs where we've lost huge numbers." Actually, it's the public sector that's "doing just fine." That unemployment rate has fallen precipitously this year, and is now just 4.2 percent.

And tell black workers that things are "just fine." Unemployment among blacks was 13.4 percent in September but jumped to 14.3 percent in October -- almost a full percentage point.

As more Obama supporters remove their heads from their, er, sandboxes, Obama's propaganda machine is running full steam, endeavoring to complete a colossal makeover to maintain his "jobs president" façade in the remaining days of the campaign. That pig will require a lot of lipstick, given that four years of Obama's "stimulus programs" have produced 23 million unemployed or underemployed Americans and tens of millions more who are working but haven't received sufficient pay increases to even keep up with inflation.

Of course, the real "Obama tax" on the middle class is the fact that median household income has declined by $4,520 (8.2 percent) since Obama took office, a trend that continued in October. (Memo to Mitt -- might want to mention that a couple times over the next few days.)

All of those economic indicators would be much worse if not for the aforementioned private sector resilience.

Last week, as part of his "jobs" charade, Obama unveiled his phony, glossy brochure, "The New Economic Patriotism," a "plan" for jobs that will most assuredly seal the fate of our economy if he is re-elected. He's calling on Americans to "embrace a new economic patriotism," while Joe Biden has declared paying higher taxes to be our "patriotic duty."

It seems we recall some other socialists in Germany and Russia early in the last century who equated "patriotism" with "statism."

This week, Obama released his second term plan to establish a cabinet level "Department of Business." (Seriously, this was not a joke.) Of course, there's already a Department of Commerce and a Department of Labor, both of which do nothing but impede job growth. We suppose the "Department of Business" will be Obama's final nail in the coffin of free enterprise.

According to him, the new secretary of business would consolidate several business- and trade-related government agencies into one entity, a "one-stop shop" for oversight and regulation. He claims that this new department would allow businesses an opportunity to seek redress with the government regarding regulations, taxation and oversight. Of course, many businesses have already tried to communicate their concerns to the Obama administration, and the White House has extended nothing but a stiff arm. It's not only unlikely that yet another level of bureaucracy will help their plight, it's virtually impossible.

Mitt Romney's campaign gave perhaps the best response to Obama's half-baked idea: "We don't need a 'secretary of business.' We need a new president who actually understands business and won't punish it with the job-killing regulations that have been imposed by the Obama administration."

It's crystal clear that the election Tuesday is not between Romney and Obama but, as Mark Alexander outlined yesterday in "The Tipping Point," between Liberty and tyranny. If Romney is elected, he will face a monumental task to avert the "debt bomb" Obama has dropped on the economy. If Obama is re-elected, that debt bomb will most certainly fulfill his promise of "fundamentally transforming the United States of America."

No More Years - Top 20 Reasons Why A Regime Change Is Imperative

Here are the Top 20 reasons a regime change is imperative, now:
 

1. $5 Trillion in New Debt - By the end of FY 2012, Obama had added $5.3 trillion to the National Debt - almost one-third of the total ($16 trillion). He rolled up more debt in three years than the first 41 presidents combined, more in four years than George W. Bush did in 8. By 2011, foreigners owned 54% of our total debt - China alone has $1.2 trillion. If Obama is reelected, what exciting times lie ahead - China calls in its debt, the dollar crashes, the U.S. joins Greece and Italy in bankruptcy court? During the 2008 campaign, Obama called Bush's contribution to the national debt (half of his own) "irresponsible and unpatriotic." That would make Obama the fiscal equivalent of Charlie Sheen and Jane Fonda.  


2. Chronic Unemployment - Under the regime in power, we've had 44 straight months of unemployment above 8% - the longest sustained high unemployment since the Great Depression. Long-term unemployment (more than 12 months) went from 2.7 million the day Obama took office to around 5 million today. The number of Americans in poverty increased by 6.4 million, and food-stamp recipients are up 46%. Obama's answer? More stimulus spending. "My president spent $780 billion on stimulus and all I got was this lousy 8% unemployment rate." 
3. Atlas Mugged: Asking the Rich to Pay a Little More - President Income-Redistribution plans to let the Bush-era tax cuts expire on January 1, raising the top rate from 35% to 39.6%. But the rich already pay a disproportionate share of the federal income tax. The top 1% of income earners pays 36.7% of the federal income tax, while earning 16% of all income. Under Obama's definition, "rich" includes couples earning more than $250,000, as well as the owners of 750,000 small businesses, who file as individuals. Raising taxes on upper-income individuals will do wonders for the economy and jobs. It's not as if this president understood the connection between wealth, investment and employment.  


4. You Didn't Build That! - The man who never ran a business, never had to meet a payroll, never worked in the private sector (academia doesn't count), told businessmen: "Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business - you didn't build that. Somebody else made it happen." Did somebody else risk their life's savings gambling, against the odds, that a new business would succeed? Did somebody else put in 80-hour weeks? And he wonders why we think he's a socialist.  
5. Obamacare - Turn the finest health care system in the world over to the wonderful folks who've bankrupted Social Security? Swell idea. The Democrats passed it (not a single House Republican voted for the bill) without even reading the 2,400-page act. Since it was signed into law, it's never had majority support. We're going to provide coverage to millions currently uninsured, encourage doctors to give up their practices, and set a ceiling on costs - and they'll be no rationing of medical services. Pie-in-the-sky is now being served in the cafeteria of Mount Big Rock Candy Hospital.  


6. Benghazi: The Defining Moment in Obama's Foreign Policy - Just as the Tehran hostage crisis has come to epitomize Jimmy Carter's feckless foreign policy, the body of a U.S. ambassador being dragged through the streets of Benghazi symbolizes Obama's. The State Department had live video streaming of the attack. Calls for U.S. military intervention to save the consulate staff were repeatedly rebuffed over the course of seven hours when we had military assets an hour away. And the president lied about the reason for the attack for 10 days. When challenged during the second presidential debate, Obama feigned indignation saying those murdered in Benghazi were "my people," and he was there "when the coffins came home." That's fitting; he helped to fill them.  
7. Planned Parenthood's Mammograms - Also in the second debate, the president defended taxpayer funding of the largest abortion provider in the nation, claiming "There are millions of women all across the country who rely on Planned Parenthood for mammograms" - which the group doesn't provide. As a state senator, Obama opposed a ban on partial-birth abortion. As a member of the U.S. Senate, he voted to increase taxpayer funding of overseas abortion providers. Obamacare will cover abortion. The administration's dogmatic embrace of the Planned Parenthood agenda led to Vice President Biden saying, on a trip to China, he wasn't going to "second guess" its policy of forced abortions. The president has never given any indication that there's any type of abortion (anywhere, at any time, under any circumstances) that he doesn't support.  
 
8. The First Gay President - The cover of the May 21st Newsweek showed Obama with a rainbow halo over his head. This came the week after his
startling 
announcement that he had reversed his long-standing support for marriage a la what's-good-for-kids-and- 
society. Actually, the president's position is a matter of convenience. In 1996, he said "I favor legalizing same-sex marriage and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages." In 2004, as a candidate for the U.S. Senate, his position had morphed to "What I believe is that marriage is between a man and a woman." There followed 8 years of being for mixed-sex marriage, thinking it through, in transition, etc. (And he calls Mitt Romney a flip-flopper.) At the beginning of his administration, he announced he would not defend the Defense of Marriage Act, in violation of his oath to see that the laws are faithfully executed. He appointed a record number of open homosexuals. Last year, U.S. diplomats abroad were told to participate in gay pride parades. How far could this go in a second term - the 31 states that have passed defense of marriage amendments being forced to accept unnatural unions contracted elsewhere, churches which refuse to perform mock marriages losing their tax-exempt status, Mendelssohn's Wedding March replaced by the Village People's rendition of "Y.M.C.A."?  
9. Iran 4 Years Closer to the Bomb - In the final debate, the president proclaimed he'd imposed the toughest sanctions in the history of sanctions on Iran - except for the Chinese and Russian companies doing business in the U.S. he exempted, except that impetus for these tough sanctions came from Republicans in Congress, except intelligence officials from several Western countries report that in recent weeks Iran has virtually completed an underground nuclear enrichment plant and is racing toward enough fissionable material to make its first bomb (others will follow). Sanctions are to Iran's nuclear program what the Polish cavalry was to German panzers in 1939.  
10. Please welcome the (Shudder) Obama Court - Of the Supreme Court Justices over 70, two are left-wing ideologues (Ginsburg and Breyer) one is conservative (Scalia) and one is the Court's swing vote. Of the three youngest, Sotomayor (the "wise Hispanic woman") and Elena Kagan (the shrewd femi-Nazi) were Obama's hard-left appointments. If the president gets to replace Scalia or Kennedy in a second term, the Court will no longer be divided and you can kiss the Second Amendment, the First Amendment's Free Exercise clause and the separation of powers goodbye.  


11. Not a Christian Country - Obama was schooled in liberation theology at Jeremiah Wright's Church of God Da-n America. At a 2009 press conference in Turkey, he claimed, "We Americans do not consider ourselves a Christian nation," and has worked hard since then to make that a reality: No White House ceremonies for National Day of Prayer, the first time a delegation of atheists was welcomed to the White House, leaving God out of his 2011 Thanksgiving message, and misquoting the Declaration of Independence by omitting the words "endowed by their Creator." Obliterating the faith of our fathers is part of Obama's master plan to remake America in the image of his father - George Soros.  
12. Islamophilia - This year, Obama hosted his fourth Ramadan dinner. He fantasizes about Islam making significant contributions to America's founding and development. At every opportunity, he's shown where his sympathies lie in the Middle East. He helped replace a pro-Western regime in Egypt with the Moslem Brotherhood and a regime in Libya that kept a lid on al-Qaeda with one that can't. His administration refuses to acknowledge any connection between Islam and terrorism. (See no sheik, hear no sheik.) He even tried to pass off the 2009 Fort Hood massacre as "workplace violence." And actor John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln because he was depressed over bad reviews.  


13. Panic At the Pump/ Obama's War On Fossil Fuels - The average price of gasoline has more than doubled since Obama took office. Drilling on federal land has been cut by 18%. Coal-fired plants have been closed (In 2008, Obama promised to "bankrupt" companies operating these plants.) He put a moratorium on off-shore drilling and rejected U.S. participation in the Keystone pipeline. Before he became Obama's Energy Secretary, Steven Chu disclosed: "We have to figure out a way to boost the price of gasoline to European levels." At least Obama is succeeding somewhere.  
14. Getting AK-47s Off the Streets And Into Mexico - Following the Colorado theater shootings, the president told the National Urban League that AK-47s belong on the battlefield and in the hands of soldiers, not on the streets of our cities and in the hands of criminals. The president's knowledge of firearms is so deficient that he doesn't know that U.S. soldiers aren't armed with AK-47s (the preferred weapon of our enemies), and that the "AK-47s" sold in this country are semi-automatic (one shot at a time). The real AK-47 is fully automatic. After Fast and Furious, only Obama could jabber about keeping guns out of the hands of criminals with a straight face. To build a case for more gun control, his ATF put 2,500 untraceable guns into the hands of Mexican drug lords. They've already killed hundreds of Mexicans and a Border Patrol agent. If only we could find a way to keep guns out of the hands of Democratic administrations. 


15. If He Had a Son He'd Look Like Trayvon - Jumping on the Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson/New Black Panther Party bandwagon, the president tried to exploit a February shooting in Florida (of a black teen by a mixed-race Hispanic), declaring that if he had a son, "He'd look like Trayvon" Martin, and "all of us have some soul-searching to do" - as if all of us encouraged Trayvon Martin to beat the hell out of neighborhood watch coordinator George Zimmerman or the latter to shoot the former. How about some soul-searching from the most racially divisive administration in history? How about a Justice Department that refuses to prosecute the neo-Black Panthers for a clear case of voter intimidation? How about an ex-Justice employee who says Attorney General Eric Holder has decided to ignore civil rights violations involving black-on-white crime? How about a president who's into racial posturing? (The Cambridge police "acted stupidly" for arresting his friend, black scholar Henry Louis Gates.) When Dear Leader said he'd bring us together, who knew that "we" consisted of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the New Black Panthers and street thugs? 
16. Obamnesty - The president couldn't get the Dream Act through Congress, so he did it by executive order. It will cover an estimated 800,000 to 1 million illegal aliens who can claim (with forged documents?) that they were brought here as children and have nursery-school diplomas. Some will be hardened criminals and gang members, others merely mooches. The only area where Obama has gotten tough here is going after states that try to stem the tide of illegal aliens on their own. Obama broke the law with his executive order to aid those who broke the law by coming here.  


17. Making the Catholic Church Pay for Sandra Fluke's Sexual Activity - After Rush Limbaugh impugned her honor, the president of the United States - who doesn't have time to attend his daily security briefings - took the time to call the caped contraceptive crusader to ask if she was "okay" and told her that her parents should be "so proud of her." Limbaugh was responding to Sandra Fluke telling a group of Democratic Congressmen that Georgetown University should be forced to buy her contraceptives. (Hush, hush, sweet harlot.) The president upped the ante, by announcing earlier this year that Catholic institutions will be compelled to pay for The Pill through their health insurance. The Democratic Party has long viewed pregnancy as a serious health problem. (In 2009, Nancy Pelosi defended stimulus spending for contraceptives as a budget-reduction measure - fewer kids, less cost.) Choice is for 15-year-olds who want to keep their parents in the dark about their abortions, not for Catholics who don't want to be forced to violate the tenets of their faith. 
18. Having Israel's Back - Whether America can survive four more years of Barack Hussein Osama (sorry, Freudian slip) is debatable. That Israel won't is almost certain. Obama is determined to force Israel into a disastrous peace settlement - a negotiated surrender that would give it what have been called Auschwitz borders. This president will not back Israel in a military confrontation with Iran, Egypt or any other rogue state lusting for its annihilation. In his March speech to AIPAC, Obama said, "I have Israel's back." Like he had the back of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak? Like he had the backs of our guys in Benghazi?

America Isn't Exceptional - When asked if he believed in American exceptionalism (that America has played a unique role on the world stage since our founding), the president said he did, but only in the way the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in "Greek exceptionalism." Obama was saying it's all subjective - that serving as a shining example of self-government, saving the world from both Nazism and communism, and creating an economic engine that lifted all boats is no big deal. Obama himself is unique - the first president who can't find anything nice to say about America, besides the fact that we elected him in 2008. 
20. Does America Deserve To Be Led By A Man This Small? - The sneering condescension toward Romney during the last debate (Obama asked if the governor knew that we now have aircraft carriers and submarines, in response to Mitt's criticism of defense cuts), to telling
Rolling Stone
that his opponent was a "bull-shi-er," to his campaign calling Romney a liar at least once every 15 seconds, to the latest ad where children of the future sing about how Romney let sick people die and poisoned the atmosphere - the president has shown himself to be petty and petulant (as well as narcissistic), in other words, a very small man. It's not easy to make Warren Harding seem larger-than-life and Richard Nixon look gracious.


America may have lost its way in recent times, but do we really deserve another 4 years of this?

But be of good cheer, happy campers. On November 6, we'll be singing: "The sun'll come up tomorrow. Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there'll be sun."

'No Red Tape'? New Jersey Turns Away Non-union Relief Crews

How desperate is hurricane-ravaged New Jersey? Not desperate enough to suspend a union monopoly that keeps the state in the bottom ten states for economic competitiveness (and #48 for business friendliness). Relief crews from Alabama who were specifically called to New Jersey found themselves diverted to Long Island, NY after they arrived because they use non-union labor. Alabama is a right-to-work state.

WAFF-TV of Hunstville, AL reports:

Crews from Huntsville, as well as Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees....

Understandably, Moore said they're frustrated being told "thanks, but no thanks."

With so much at stake--and lives still in danger--it would seem logical to tell special interests to step aside.

As is often the case when he goes off-teleprompter, at a campaign stop in Ohio today, Obama revealed a side of himself we haven't seen since Hurricane Sandy gave him the opportunity to play The American President for a few days. The old Divider-In-Chief returned with a vengeance when in the middle of an attack on Mitt Romney he told a crowd at a campaign rally to stop booing and, " Vote! Voting's the best revenge!"

What he obviously meant was that voting is the best revenge against Mitt Romney.

Obama Leaves Sandy Victims Behind

Barack Obama has had his two days of photo ops and effusive praise from the governor of New Jersey. He hugged a lot of people and announced that all the usual red tape and bureaucracy would be suspended so that people and communities impacted by Sandy could be helped. In other words, he adopted the GOP platform of sweeping away big government. Why not make these new rules permanent, Mr. President?

After all his showboating, Obama left the disaster scene and the victims behind and returned to the campaign trail. Meanwhile, the news from New York is terrible. Reports do not show a disaster response that is up to the task.

Major hospitals and gas stations are without power. Families are "dumpster diving" for food. Temperatures are falling into the 30s at night. There are thousands of people who are stuck in high rise apartments. These folks seem invisible to the liberal media.

The Wall Street Journal reports that FEMA officials reassured us before Sandy hit that they had 400 industrial-sized generators ready to go. Three days later, perhaps only 70 are in use.


Ideology Over Results

The response to this storm shows the failures of the big government ideology. Perhaps the most important thing these folks need are workers and crews who can get power, heat and gas restored. Unbelievably, New Jersey refused to allow power crews from Alabama to help because they were non-union workers.

Forget about getting the job done. Even in the midst of a disaster, left-wing ideology (union solidarity) comes first!

That pretty well sums up the Obama Administration. In the midst of an economic disaster, he bailed out the auto unions, funded green energy boondoggles, and then spent the rest of his time trying to socialize our health care system. The left got what it wanted, while the taxpayers got stuck with the bill.

One of the biggest complaints we have heard since Sandy hit is the desperate need for improved infrastructure. Remember Obama's $800 stimulus bill? Wasn't that supposed to go to "shovel-ready" infrastructure projects? As it turns out, "shovel-ready" wasn't quite so "shovel-ready." I wonder what a few extra billion dollars of storm surge infrastructure could have done for New Jersey and New York.

To top it all off, Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed Barack Obama yesterday citing Hurricane Sandy as an example of the imminent threat we face from climate change. And what is the left's solution for climate change? The same solution to every problem -- higher taxes and bigger government.

Sandy was a powerful storm. But, as a reminder, this was only a Category 1 storm. It was not the only major storm to ever hit New York. Add Mayor Bloomberg to the list of liberals who don't know history.

Dr. Roger Pielke had an outstanding column yesterday putting Sandy in perspective. Three hurricanes -- each twice as powerful as Sandy -- hit the East Coast from August 1954 to August 1955. Remember how Al Gore and others told us after Katrina that such mega-storms would become the norm as a result of climate change? Here are the facts: No Category 3 hurricane has hit the mainland U.S. in seven years. Such a "hurricane drought" hasn't happened in more than one hundred years! So much for climate change's "new normal."


Hurricane Obama

One of the ways we measure the impact of a storm is the economic damage it causes to property and the cost to clean up afterwards. By some estimates, Sandy may have caused $50 billion in damage. That's a lot of money. But consider the economic damage of "Hurricane Obama." His annual $1 trillion-plus deficits are the equivalent of 20 Hurricane Sandy's hitting us each year!

Speaking of Obama's economic damage, the unemployment rate went up today to 7.9%. For the record, the unemployment rate is higher today after four years of Barack Obama than it was when he took office in January 2009 (7.8%).


Adopt A Voter

The polls heading into the final weekend before this historic election show the candidates virtually deadlocked. Hurricane Sandy appears to have blunted Mitt Romney's momentum. If that holds, we could have a very, very long night Tuesday, November 6th.

On Fox News yesterday former Secretary of State James Baker, who led George W. Bush's Florida recount team in 2000, warned that several states require recounts in close elections. If the results on Election Day mirror the polls, there could well be recounts not in one state, but multiple states. Imagine what happened in Florida 12 years ago happening in Ohio, in Iowa, in Wisconsin, in Nevada, in Colorado, in Pennsylvania, in New Hampshire, etc. The resulting tension, law suits, apathy and cynicism would be terrible for our republic.

The best way to avoid that nightmare scenario is for every conservative and every man and woman of faith to vote so that the Romney/Ryan ticket wins a landslide victory on November 6th!

Please make every effort in these last few days to reach out to friends and family members, neighbors, fellow worshippers, business associates, etc. Don't waste your time with die-hard liberals. Focus on those who haven't made up their minds or who may be soft in their support for Obama. Find just one more potential Republican voter and bring him or her our way.

Contact your local Republican Party headquarters and ask how you can help. Volunteer for conservative candidates this weekend. Make that extra phone call. Knock on that extra door.

The campaigns have spent their war chests. They have run their ads. They are holding their last rallies.

The future of our country and our values are at stake. That future now rests in your hands.

"Can An Evangelical Christian Vote for a Mormon?"

In a recent edition of Decision magazine, Reverend Franklin Graham addressed a question that has popped into my Inbox from time to time over the past few months. His column was excellent, and I want to share it with you as we head into the final weekend before this critical election. Here's why.

We have been hearing rumors that there will be a major effort this weekend by fake groups to exploit religious bigotry. One way this might happen is for left-wing activists to blanket church parking lots, particularly in rural areas where the media won't notice, with fliers aimed at dissuading Christians from voting for a Mormon.

We saw some of this in a recent CNN interview in which an Obama surrogate suggested that Billy Graham was senile and said that Christians who supported Mitt Romney were bi-polar.

If you experience anything like that this weekend, I want you to be prepared and be able to respond. A very easy thing to do is to forward this message to friends who have asked you this very question. Share it with your pastor. Print this message, make copies and take some to church with you this weekend.

Yes, my friends, prayer is important. But I strongly believe that God works through His people! That means we must take action too! So please pray that men and women of faith would be responsible citizens and vote to defend our First Freedoms!

Can An Evangelical Christian Vote for a Mormon?

This question has stirred much debate. Historically, Christians have voted for candidates of different faiths, including Mormons, based on how they live their lives and how deeply committed they are to upholding the U.S. Constitution. Remember, God ordained government, and we are not electing a pastor-in-chief, we are electing a commander-in-chief.

George Washington was Episcopalian, Abraham Lincoln had no religious affiliation while he was president, John Kennedy was Catholic and Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were outspoken Southern Baptists. Over a period of 223 years, our nation's cities and states have been governed by people of many different faiths, including Mormons from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Orrin Hatch, a Mormon, has served this nation as an effective senator and George Romney, Gov. Mitt Romney's father, was one of the great governors of Michigan. His religion never interfered with governing, but his personal faith did define his strong marriage, family values and personal integrity. I believe this is the same for Gov. Mitt Romney. While there are major differences in the theology of evangelical Christians and that of Mormons, as well as those who practice the Catholic faith or the Jewish faith, we do share common values that are biblically based.

Americans must remember that while our nation was founded upon godly principles, we do not have a state religion. Rather, our Constitution provides for the freedom to worship without interference of government. Our forefathers shed their blood to win this right. We must be committed to electing a commander-in-chief who will protect this liberty and uphold the Constitution as one nation under God, and who will ensure God's moral law will not be violated by changing the law of the land.

We are at a profound crossroads. Our secularized society has shaken its fist in God's face and rejected His very name. Like Joseph and Daniel, we must not compromise when government clashes with the worship of God. We must not silence our voices to God's law. We must use our influence to elect those who will govern with respect for the sanctity of marriage as between one man and one woman; the sanctity of life; and yes, the protection of God's beloved nation Israel.

We must not cast votes for officials -- whether candidates of the Democratic, Republican, or Tea Party, or of a religious persuasion -- that are against these principles of God. We have, in the past, elected Christians who have defied some of these very principles.

We need something like what Jerry Falwell did in the 1980s. We need a "moral majority" -- made up of Christians, Jews, Mormons, Catholics and many others of faith -- to come together to take a stand for our religious freedoms and rights.

In recent days, President Clinton said that President Obama "has a plan to rebuild America from the ground up." But God-fearing Americans have no desire to see America rebuilt -- but rather restored. To "rebuild it" would be to create a new nation without God or perhaps under many gods. This was never the intent of those who shed their blood for the freedom to worship as "one nation under God."

I pray that all Christians and God-fearing Americans will put aside labels and vote for principles -- God's principles -- that for many years have resulted in His blessing upon our nation.

So, can a Christian vote for a Mormon? The answer is yes.

Several bishops have issued strongly-worded letters to their parishes. Yesterday the Catholic bishops of Pennsylvania released this letter warning "Religious liberty itself -- 'our first, most cherished freedom' -- is no longer secure."

Paul Lovedre, Bishop of Arlington, and Francis DiLorenzo, Bishop of Richmond, issued this letter to Catholic voters in Virginia.

The Weekly Winston: Opinion Poll Edition

By now you are probably suffering from opinion poll overload.  I decided months ago not to sign up for automatic opinion poll updates and twitter feeds, for fear of jamming my mailbox.  There seems to be a new poll about every 15 minutes; certainly several a day.  As recently at the 1980 election the major polls came out only every few days, and one of the small details that made that election so dramatic was that the major polling outfits stopped polling on the Friday or Saturday before the election, and missed the large shift to Reagan that occurred over the last 48 hours.  (And if memory serves, the few polls like Gallup that existed in 1948 stopped polling weeks ahead of the election, because everyone knew Tom Dewey had it in the bag, and as polls were very expensive then, why waste the money.)

With that in mind, let's visit Sir Winston's views on opinion polls, from 1953:

We have a deep respect for public opinion but we do not let our course be influenced from day to day by Gallup Polls, favourable though they may be.  It is not a good thing always to be feeling your pulse and taking your temperature; although one has to do it sometimes, you do not want to make a habit of it.  I have heard it said that a Government should keep its ear to the ground, but they should also remember that this is not a very dignified attitude.

I see it said that leaders should keep their ears to the ground.  All I can say is that the British nation will find it very hard to look up to leaders who are detected in that somewhat ungainly posture.

 

The Enthusiasm Is All GOP, Red Rocks Edition

I wrote here about the sensational Romney-Ryan rally at Red Rocks, the amphitheater outside Denver. The Romney campaign has now made a web ad out of the event, titled "Red Rocks." I learned about the video because one of my 16-year-old daughter's friends tweeted it. I have no idea how the youth vote will break this year, but there is nothing in Barack Obama's tawdry campaign, or in the diminished opportunity of the last four years, that should attract young voters. Quite a few kids are smart enough to figure that out. Here it is, Red Rocks:

 

Obama's November Blunder

One of Barack Obama's problems is that he is not a very accomplished public speaker. When he veers away from his teleprompter, which you pretty much have to do on the stump, his instincts are poor and he tends to get into trouble. That happened yesterday when Obama said to a crowd that had just booed Mitt Romney, "No, no, no - don't boo, vote. Vote. Voting is the best revenge." That was a dumb thing to say on several levels, and it exposed an ugly aspect of Obama's personality. He really does think that opposing him is somehow dirty pool, and that "revenge" is the appropriate treatment for those who fail to bow to the mighty Barack.

The Romney campaign was quick to pounce. They produced this ad:

Byron York writes, "Obama campaign struggles to explain 'revenge' remark." The campaign's purported explanation, which tried to tie Obama's gaffe to a controversial Romney ad, simply wasn't true. Obama's campaign manager ludicrously tried to tie the "revenge" line to Romney by tweeting, "The Romney campaign's message today is revenge, ours is the President's plan for the middle class." Revenge, of course, was Obama's message, not Romney's.

Obama's blunder isn't likely to tip the scales with many voters, but in the closing days of the campaign it serves as a useful reminder of Obama's dark side.

 

Dumbest Washington Post op-ed ever?

Considering that the Washington Post regularly runs columns by the likes of Eugene Robinson, E.J. Dionne, and Dana Milbank - few of which I read - I'm hesitant to declare any Post op-ed its dumbest ever. Yet this piece by Colbert King, which argues that Mitt Romney may well be the new Andrew Johnson, surely is a strong contender.

Johnson was the racist president who succeeded Abraham Lincoln. Johnson tried to enable the former Confederate states to reenter the union without protection for freedmen's rights, and he vetoed key civil rights legislation, including a bill that granted citizenship to freedmen. He also opposed the Fourteenth Amendment. Johnson famously wrote: "This is a country for white men, and by God, as long as I am President, it shall be a government for white men."

King presents no evidence that Mitt Romney is a racist. He points to no federal civil rights legislation that Romney has opposed, much less would attempt to repeal. He points to nothing in Romney's record as governor of Massachusetts that suggests hostility to civil rights for African-Americans or unwillingness to enforce their civil rights.

What, then, is the basis for King's idiotic assertion of similarity between Romney and Andrew Johnson? King relies on the fact that, like Johnson, Romney believes in "states rights" and "mistrusts" the federal government.

But Andrew Johnson is hardly the only American president who believed in states rights and mistrusted the federal government. The same can be said of Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan, and many of the presidents who came in between. Why compare Romney with Johnson, rather than Jefferson and Reagan? The answer lies in King's intellectual dishonesty.

King's only other argument on behalf of his comparison is that Romney "stood by as Republican-controlled state legislatures passed voter-identification laws making it harder for people of color. . .to exercise their fundamental right to vote." King presents no evidence that such laws impose an undue burden on "people of color" and he ignores the argument that the laws are an appropriate method of preventing voting fraud. In any case, it is obscene to compare the post-Civil War Black Codes to legislation requiring voters to prove they are who they say they are.

King concludes by asserting that, as president, Romney would take his lead from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and Fox News, since they "helped him get where he is today." Of this group, only Coulter, to my knowledge, worked to help Romney "get where he is today" - i.e., the Republican nominee. And, of course, a great many other, less conservative figures than Limbaugh, Hannity, and Coulter have also helped Romney. Former Secretary of State Rice comes to mind.

In any event, King offers no evidence that any of his pantomime villains resembles Andrew Johnson, either.

But being a mindlessly liberal Washington Post columnist means never having to present evidence.

 

Afghanistan missing from candidates' "closing arguments"

Today's Wall Street Journal contains "closing argument" statements by Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. President Obama mentions Afghanistan once in part of a sentence that talks about "ending" - not winning - "the wars." Romney says nothing about Afghanistan.

A friend writes:

Think about this for a second: America has been at war in Afghanistan for 11 years; Americans are currently fighting and dying there; and neither candidate for president says anything about winning the war, and one says
nothing about it at all.

Romney's Closing Argument

Today in Wisconsin, Mitt Romney delivered what his campaign calls his closing argument in support of his candidacy. It focused on the economy and featured Romney's themes of change and optimism. Here are some excerpts:

Four years ago, candidate Obama promised to do so very much, but he has fallen so very short.

He promised to be a "post-partisan president" but he became the most partisan- blaming, attacking, dividing.

He was going to focus on creating jobs. Instead, he focused on Obamacare, which killed jobs.

He said he was going to cut the federal deficit by half; then he doubled it.

He said that the unemployment rate would now be 5.2%; today we learned that it is 7.9%-it is 9 million jobs short of what he promised. Unemployment is higher today than when Barack Obama took office.

He promised that he would propose a plan to save Social Security and Medicare from insolvency. He did not; rather, he raided $716 billion from Medicare for his vaunted Obamacare.

He would lower health premiums by $2,500. Now they are higher by $3,000. And gasoline? The American family pays $2,000 a year more for gasoline today than when he was elected.

He said he would work across the aisle on the most important issues. He has not met on the economy, or on the budget, or on jobs, with either the Republican leader of the House or the Senate since July. Instead of bridging the divide, he has made it wider.

How is it that he has fallen so short of what he promised? In part, it is because he has never led, never worked across the aisle, never truly understood how jobs are created in the economy.

And today, he makes new promises, promises he will be unable to keep, because he admits that he will stay on the same path. The same course we have been on will not lead to a better destination.

The same path means $20 trillion in debt, crippling unemployment, stagnant take-home pay, depressed home values, and a devastated military. And unless we change course, we may be looking at another recession.

The question of this election comes down to this: do you want more of the same or do you want real change?

That is very strong stuff, which sums up the case for Romney. The rest of the speech was less focused, but included plenty of good moments:

You know that if the President is re-elected, he will continue to promote government and demote business. He chose his own jobs council, made up of business leaders. And he hasn't met with them in 9 months. 9 months.

I like business, I don't see it as a necessary evil. I see it as a means for people to fulfill their dreams. ...

You know that if the President is re-elected, he will say every good thing he can about education, but in the final analysis, he will do what his largest campaign supporters-the public-sector unions-insist upon. And your kids will have the same schools with the same results.

When I am president, I will be a voice of the children and their parents. There is no union for the PTA. ...

If there is anyone worried the last four years are the best we can do, if there is anyone who fears that the American dream is fading away, if there is anyone who wonders whether better jobs and better paychecks are things of the past, I have a clear and unequivocal message: with the right leadership, America will come roaring back.

We are Americans. We can do anything.

The only thing that stands between us and some of the best years we have known is lack of leadership. And that's why we have elections.

This Tuesday is a moment to look into the future and imagine what we can do ... to put the past four years behind us and start building a new future.

You saw the differences when President Obama and I were side-by-side in our debates. He says it has to be this way. I say it can't stay this way. He's offering excuses, I've got a plan. He's hoping we'll settle. I can't wait for us to get started.

Americans don't settle. We build, we aspire, we listen to that voice inside that says, "We can do better." A better job; a better life for our kids; a bigger, better country.

That better life is out there, waiting for us. Our destiny is in your hands.

Then on into the conclusion, which struck me as rather sappy; but then, I'm not an undecided voter. All in all, a powerful message and one that goes back to where the campaign started: with Obama's terrible record on the economy, and his utter failure to make good on the promises he made in 2008.

Yet another Benghazigate question

Last night, John wrote about the information revealed in documents found by two reporters for Foreign Policy when they visited the Benghazi consulate, six weeks after the terrorist attack there. The documents include letters, drafted on the day of the attack, that suggest the compliticity of Libyan officials in the terrorist attack on the consulate.

The discovery of these documents raises additional questions relevant to Benghazigate. A threshold question, propounded by Max Boot, is this: Why did the U.S. abandon its diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, so that anyone, whether reporters or civilians, friends or foes of the United States, can rummage through its rubble?

Boot argues that marines should have been sent in to secure the site of the compound, and that the compound should have been rebuilt. The failure to take these measures "is yet another failure that gives the people of the Middle East an impression of American retreat," says Boot.

I'm not so sure we should rebuild a consulate in Benghazi at this time. But it does seem like yet another mistake for the U.S. not to have purged the site of documents. On the other hand, had it done so, the public would be that much further away from discovering the facts about the tragedy of September 11, 2012.

Jobs Report Shows the Economy Is Growing Too Slowly

Today's jobs report, the last before next Tuesday's election, shows that the economy is growing too slowly to reduce unemployment. The unemployment rate rose from September's 7.8 percent to 7.9 percent, and 171,000 jobs were added to the economy.

The Heritage Foundation's Amy Payne explains how the administration is playing games with the economy
 

The October report partly reversed the mysterious drop in the unemployment rate in the September jobs report... With the jump back up in the unemployment rate in October to nearly 8 percent, we have at least the beginnings of an answer to the mystery.

In addition to possible quirks in the way the government collects information on unemployment, the Administration is playing some more overt games with the economy, holding new regulations and even layoff notices until later in the year.

 

For example, the Obama administration is encouraging federal contractors to violate the WARN act, a law requiring employers to notify their employees of impending layoffs. The administration has actually offered to pay companies' penalties if they hold off telling workers about job cuts related to defense sequestration.

Do you think the government should manipulate the economy this way?
 

A cable sent from the American consulate in Benghazi weeks before before the September 11 terrorist attack raised grievous security concerns. It specifically listed known terrorist groups in the region and concluded that the consulate could not withstand a "coordinated attack."

Heritage Foundation national security expert James Carafano points out that Americans have a right to know exactly why our government failed to ensure the security of the four citizens who perished in Benghazi, "After the first 9/11, all we asked was for a government to be better at "connecting the dots" and then sharing that information. We have a right to know why our government has failed miserably at this fundamental task."

Carafano asks these five questions about the government's response to Benghazi.

Russia's North Caucasus is becoming one of the most unstable regions in the world, and  the Islamist insurgency there is threatening to make matters worse. The Kremlin is struggling with efforts to control the brewing terrorist plots.

A Heritage report notes that neither Russia's use of excessive force nor continuing economic assistance to the region have helped the situation. Russian citizens are now afraid to visit the region, and Heritage's Ariel Cohen points out that the crisis is broadening to the "historically peaceful and tolerant Muslim Tatarstan 1,000 miles to the north."

Despite these security threats, Russia refuses assistance from the West, even while a lot is at stake. The crisis risks destabilizing the entire region and could threaten oil and gas pipelines linking the Caspian Sea to Western Europe. And it could threaten the safety of large public events in Russia, including the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Unemployment Rate Inches Back Up

The October jobs report essentially agrees with the rest of the current data on the economy-the economy is growing slowly, too slowly to bring down unemployment rapidly. In fact, the unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent in October and the economy created about 171,000 jobs, roughly equal to the usual number of new workers in the labor force.

The October report partly reversed the mysterious drop in the unemployment rate in the September jobs report. At the time, J.D. Foster, Heritage's Norman B. Ture Senior Fellow in the Economics of Fiscal Policy, predicted that September's jobs report would be sorted out later:

The September household survey is one to set aside to wait for a more reliable report next month, which will almost certainly reverse the odd results from September. If it does, then we have both confirmation of the power of statistics and of the weakness in the economy.


With the jump back up in the unemployment rate in October to nearly 8 percent, we have at least the beginnings of an answer to the mystery.

In addition to possible quirks in the way the government collects information on unemployment, the Administration is playing some more overt games with the economy, holding new regulations and even layoff notices until later in the year.

As research fellow Diane Katz described yesterday, the Obama Administration has missed two legally mandated deadlines to let them know about new regulations that are coming, adding to the overwhelming uncertainty they are facing.

Meanwhile, to keep too many pink slips from going out immediately, the Obama Administration has been encouraging federal contractors to break a law that requires them to notify employees of impending layoffs. The Administration has offered to pay the penalties for the companies if they will just hold off. As Heritage's Hans von Spakovsky explained:

Massive defense spending cuts under sequestration are scheduled to hit on January 2, 2013. Defense contractors affected by the budget cuts would have to issue notice letters to employees by November 2 (four days before the election) to meet the January 2 start date for the spending cuts.


With businesses in such a holding pattern, it's no wonder the recovery is sluggish. And the anticipation of Taxmageddon hitting January 1 is only adding to the crisis.

Not only will Taxmageddon mean individual tax increases-if you're a middle-class family, your taxes will go up around $4,100-but the whole economy will also suffer. The Congressional Budget Office has said that unless Congress and the President act, we will be plunged into a new recession extending through 2013-when we haven't even recovered from the previous one.

When the new Congress takes office on January 3, reversing Taxmageddon should be at the top of its to-do list. The congressional leadership and the successful presidential candidate should make clear right after the election that reversing Taxmageddon will be their top priority, to reassure businesses and employees as soon as possible. The economy cannot recover while businesses are hamstrung by government interference, looming regulations, and tax increases.

If George Washington was alive today he would dress down the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for cowardice. The man from Chicago exhibited dastardly behavior by the abandonment of Americans at the hand of Muslim Terrorists.  The American tradition of never abandoning those under his command on the battlefield while hiding in lofty comfort several thousand miles away. Standing by and doing nothing while watching your men being murdered by uneducated savages is criminal. Only a man who never defended this country can show total disregard for his fellow Americans.

Obama caught off guard, not prepared to cheat in Pennsylvania

In this morning's piece, Coach is Right suggested that Mitt Romney's surge in Pennsylvania caught Barack Obama's election team flat footed. And it looks like Dick Morris agrees, although he puts his argument in a different way.

As Morris sees it, "team Obama was so focused on the swing states that they ignored the semi-swing states which could come into play." (1) Certainly it never occurred to Obama that he might be required to allocate campaign resources to the very blue, very union oriented state of Pennsylvania. After all, he had won the state by a 10 point margin, 54-44, in 2008. Clearly it would be best to pay attention to REAL swing states like Virginia, Ohio, Florida and Iowa.

Romney just 15 electoral votes shy of the White House?

Look at the Real Clear Politics electoral map, the states/electoral vote totals won by John McCain in 2008 and the states Mitt Romney is likely to win in 2012. When these numbers are put together they add up this way:

If Romney wins the states won by McCain in 2008 he will have 179 electoral votes (at current electoral vote value for the states). (1) Add to these the states currently leaning Romney and which Romney is in fact expected to win. They are Indiana 10; North Carolina 15; Virginia 13; Colorado 9 and Florida 29. With these additions Romney's total electoral vote grows to 255.

This would leave Romney needing just 15 more votes to win the White House. Winning Ohio (18)-which Romney now leads by 50-48 according to Rasmussen-would put him over the top. Polling info and updates; skewed polls still a source of hilarity

Skewed polling samples still abound among Barack Obama's most faithful supporters.

CBS/NYTimes/Quinnipiac polls: show Obama up by 5 over Romney in Ohio, by 1 point in Florida and by 2 in Virginia. The samples however leave much to be desired. In Ohio, Democrats enjoy an 8 point advantage (37/29/30); in Florida 7 points, (37/30/29); and in Virginia 8 points (35/27/35). The Florida and Virginia advantages are larger than those enjoyed by Obama in 2008!   Romney leads among independents at +5 in Florida, +6 in Ohio and +21 in Florida!! With these margins among independent voters and a voter turnout similar to that which favored Republicans in 2010 (tied in Florida, +1 in Ohio and +4 in Virginia) Obama will be hard pressed to carry any of the 3 states.  (1)

Hello America,
 

We are three days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America, again.

On Tuesday, each one of us will have the opportunity to take part in our most treasured right as Americans. We will be able to walk into that voting booth, close the curtain, and cast our ballot not just for the man who will lead us for the next four years, but also for the direction we want to take our country for the next hundred years. Will we choose to continue on the road we have been down for most of the past century, a path that has led to bigger government, more dependence, and less personal responsibility? Or is it time to turn things around and head in a direction that finds solution in individuals, faith and family?

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, it's easy to throw your hands up in the air and say, "Yes, we clearly need a big federal government! We need FEMA! We need President Obama to swoop in and save the day! Please, help us!" Rarely, however, is the easy thing to do the same as the right thing to do. You will receive pressure from your liberal neighbors and the mainstream media as they hammer the message of big government. They'll try and convince you you're selfish, racist, and hateful because you don't believe in turning to the federal government for help. They don't understand that we believe that individuals can and will be the people on the ground leading the way in helping our friends and neighbors.

Just look at some of the stories coming out in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy to see where the progressive mentality leads us. In New York City, the Heath Department shut down a Chinese restaurant that was trying to feed people without food or electricity. Devastated areas like Staten Island and Coney Island are ignored by the Red Cross. Utility workers all the way from Alabama are turned away because they aren't members of a union. In the height of insanity, Mayor Bloomberg was encouraging the New York Marathon to run as planned tomorrow while many areas are still without power and available resources decline. It was only after days of public pressure that he finally changed his mind.

President Obama says that we need to move forward. They say that we need to keep making progress. That government will be the key to turning around the economy. The truth is that we cannot continue down this path. But we know of a different way.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle believe they can make a better decision than you. And that is going to stop.  Because progress was not made by politicians. Real progress is made by the average people. As the radio theme song says -- YOU will be the key.

We must begin a new chapter of American exceptionalism. A new century of American exploration and discovery. We won't get it from one political party. One politician. One dreamer. We will get it when we rely on ourselves. On the facts. On the truth. And most importantly when we rely on God.

I know we face difficult choices. So do you. America is in trouble financially, people have gone astray, we have a weak economy, a weak dollar. We have put our troops in harm's way too many times, on missions that don't always make sense. And despite our military power, we are not feared, not respected, and not honored.

But you know what? I'm not afraid. And neither are you.


 

On Tuesday, I want you to go to the polls and vote for the principles and values that represent the America that you want to live in. One where small business drives the engine of America. One where success is celebrated, not vilified. One where faith and family shape the choices we make in our daily lives. One where people understand personal responsibility, and neighbors help their neighbors in times of crisis.

Even more importantly, make sure that your neighbors and like-minded friends are going out and voting. Drive your schlub friend to the polls if you have to. This election must be a mandate. We need to stand together and declare what we believe in. We can't afford another election going to the Supreme Court. There shouldn't be a question on where our country will be headed on Wednesday morning. You need to go out and do your part.

And don't forget, it's not too late to make one final push. Don't be afraid to talk to your friends and neighbors about this election. Don't let anyone tell you you're wrong for standing up for small government. If you're a faith leader, don't let the government tell you that you can't speak about the future of our country to your congregation. This is the most crucial election of our lifetime and we all need to do whatever we can to make sure that principles and values prevail.

America must return to her glory, be strong and fight for freedom. Not just with our might. But with our ideas. Our energy. Our freedom. I declare firm reliance in divine Providence.

This is your moment. This is America's moment. It's time to stand up and stand together.

It's time to restore America.
