In Delaware, Absentee Ballots Affidavits must be received by 12 noon on Friday, November 2 by the County Board of Elections.
In New Jersey, Absentee Ballot Applications must be delivered by hand to the County Board of elections through Monday, November 5, 3 PM. (The deadline for mailing expired on October 30. We are not aware of any extension.)

United States President: The defeat of President Obama is of utmost importance if we have any hope of stopping ObamaCare, halting the overreach of the administrative state, and restoring fiscal sanity. Governor Romney's pick of Paul Ryan and his "believe in America" campaign gives us renewed hope that America can be restored. United States Senate: It is critical to regain control of the United States Senate. That is why Tom Smith must be elected. As a husband, parent, farmer, equipment operator, and business owner Tom Smith is committed to cap the future growth of spending, passing a balanced budget amendment, and the protection of Life, our individual rights, and America's national sovereignty.
U.S. House of Representatives: If we are to have a chance of restoring our liberties, including the repeal of ObamaCare, it is critical to maintain and add to the Republican majority in the House. There are three "row office" elections in Pennsylvania that demand your consideration.
- Attorney General: Mr. David Freed, of Camp Hill, joined the Cumberland County district attorney's office in 1998, advanced from assistant to become DA in 2006, winning elections in 2007 and in 2011. He brings significantly more managerial experience than his Democrat opponent to this important position. Remember it is the Attorney General who must defend Pennsylvania from an overreaching federal government.
- State Treasurer: Diana Irey Vaughan, has fought hard to protect the citizens of Washington County. As a County Commissioner, seven consecutive budgets were balanced and a top-performing pension fund was managed without raising taxes. She is a strong opponent of "pay-to-play" politics.
- Auditor General: Mr. John Maher is a practicing CPA, making him uniquely qualified for the position of Auditor General. As a CPA, John Maher launched and ran one of the largest CPA firms dedicated to auditing public institutions in Pennsylvania. As a member of the Pennsylvania legislature John wrote Pennsylvania's Open Records Law and the Audit Integrity Act.
As advocates of limited government it is important to make sure that we elect these experienced professionals.
Pennsylvania House members and half of the Pennsylvania Senate members are up for election to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Several key races are particularly close and demand your attention.
In the Pennsylvania Senate, D. Raja (PA Senate District 37) is a local entrepreneur and successful CEO. He will be a true reformer. Raja will actually refuse the legislative pension until pensions are reformed in Pennsylvania. In the Pennsylvania House, recently elected and up for re-election for the first time are the following reformers: George Dunbar (District 56) -- Eli Evankovich (District 54) -- Rick Saccone (District 39) Of particular note is the PA House race in District 16. Kathy Coder, an experienced businesswoman, community council member, and council president will be a reformer in Harrisburg. Kathy will refuse the legislative pension, taxpayer-funded car, and support term limits. Remember that Washington and Harrisburg will not change unless we change the people we are sending and retain the good people that we have elected in previous elections. Pray for this Election and work like you have never worked before. |

- Pray that integrity and honesty will prevail in the voting process.
- Pray for the protection and accurate counting of every ballot, including absentee and military ballots (although the current administration has been attempting to suppress the latter).
- Pray that those who believe in prayer will turn out at the polls to ensure their Christian values are voiced and protected.
Help AFA get out the vote
We only have 7 days to rally Christian voters! In many races, the election will come down to voter turnout and I'm counting on AFA supporters to make a real difference in the outcome. The 2000 presidential race came down to just a few hundred votes in Florida, less than one good sized church congregation. You and your friends can make a difference!

- Door Knocking: We can create walk lists for your neighborhood targeting persuadable voters. We'll also provide the campaign literature. You go out and change the minds, change the polls - MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. Click here if you want maps for your neighborhood.

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

THERE IS A GROWING awareness among Americans that religious freedom in our country has come under sustained pressures. In the public square where freedom of religion meets public policy, it becomes clearer all the time that there is a high price to be paid for being true to one's conscience. This is no tale of Chicken Little-although a chain of chicken sandwich restaurants based in Atlanta is part of the story. Let me give you a few examples.
In our universities, those citadels of toleration, we find that toleration can be sharply limited. At the Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, the student chapter of the Christian Legal Society was denied any status on the campus because it would not abandon its requirement that members commit themselves to traditional Christian norms regarding sexual morality. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling in 2010, held that the student group's rights were not violated by a "take all comers" policy. Following this lead, Vanderbilt University has rewritten its student organizations policy and effectively chased every traditionally Christian student group off campus, denying them regular access to campus facilities. And at the University of Illinois, an adjunct professor of religion, hired to teach a course on Catholicism, was let go because a student complained about his patient explanation of the Catholic Church's natural law teachings on human sexuality. (He was later restored to his teaching duties, but at the expense of the Newman Center, not on the state payroll.)

This is not surprising, since the attributes that made it different were vividly evident from the day of its birth. Let me say a few words about three of them in particular. First of all, unlike all other nations past or present, this one accepted as a self-evident truth that all men are created equal. What this meant was that its Founders aimed to create a society in which, for the first time in the history of the world, the individual's fate would be determined not by who his father was, but by his own freely chosen pursuit of his own ambitions. In other words, America was to be something new under the sun: a society in which hereditary status and class distinctions would be erased, leaving individuals free to act and to be judged on their merits alone. There remained, of course, the two atavistic contradictions of slavery and the position of women; but so intolerable did these contradictions ultimately prove that they had to be resolved-even if, as in the case of the former, it took the bloodiest war the nation has ever fought. Secondly, in all other countries membership or citizenship was a matter of birth, of blood, of lineage, of rootedness in the soil. Thus, foreigners who were admitted for one reason or another could never become full-fledged members of the society. But America was the incarnation of an idea, and therefore no such factors came into play. To become a full-fledged American, it was only necessary to pledge allegiance to the new Republic and to the principles for which it stood. Thirdly, in all other nations, the rights, if any, enjoyed by their citizens were conferred by human agencies: kings and princes and occasionally parliaments. As such, these rights amounted to privileges that could be revoked at will by the same human agencies. In America, by contrast, the citizen's rights were declared from the beginning to have come from God and to be "inalienable"-that is, immune to legitimate revocation. Read more: |

CROSSING the Poquessing Creek into Bucks County is like stepping into a political time machine.
As voters across the country throw out established politicians for more extreme options, Bucks residents seem increasingly proud of their centrism, ticket-splitting and resistance to ideological movements.
The post-industrial boroughs in lower Bucks are Democratic turf, but they can stomach Republicans who are soft on labor. The rural villages of upper Bucks are generally conservative, but many went for Barack Obama in 2008. And in between, the ever-expanding subdivisions and boutique-lined Main Streets are packed with parents who take far greater pride in their children's school districts than in their party registrations.
All of which explains why the county's congressional candidates seem to be in a race to say the word "independent" in every sound bite. And why the campaign machinery backing them - desperate to paint the opponent as extremist - may have led you to believe that the race pits Atilla the Hun against Joseph Stalin.
Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick - a former county commissioner elected in 2004, defeated in 2006 and re-elected last cycle - has worked for years to build a reputation as a moderate. But his opponent, Kathy Boockvar, says that the tea-party movement has transformed him.
Boockvar, a Doylestown lawyer, has spent much of her career representing middle-class and disadvantaged clients. She says that her legal training as a mediator will help her bring the two parties together in Washington. Republican groups, however, say that her background reflects support for far-left causes.

Dear Activist,
I hope this email finds you well and that you and your family were able to ride out Hurricane Sandy with minimal disruption and damage. Here in the southeastern part of the state, my family and I are among thousands of people still living without power (I was able to type this email thanks to a friend with a generator -- God Bless good friends). Mother Nature certainly unleashed her wrath on us all.
But the damage from Hurricane Sandy is small compared the enormous damage done to Pennsylvania and our country by President Obama. While I watch the work of FEMA and emergency management agencies at the state and local level, I see the government functioning in its proper role. His failing agenda of big government hasn't helped us at all, but instead has infringed on our lives and livelihood.

Here are the specifics of Senator Casey Jr's failing agenda:
Higher Taxes: On multiple occasions, Senator Casey Jr. voted to raise taxes on Americans who are already sacrificing to make ends meet in this weak economic recovery. He voted to increase the death tax, which impacts many family-owned businesses and for the 20 tax increases in the President's disastrous healthcare law.
Increased Spending: During his tenure in the Senate, Casey Jr. has voted to increase spending to astronomical levels. He voted for the $800 billion stimulus and record spending.
Health Care: Casey Jr. voted to pass the President's flawed health care law. This law spends $1.68 trillion over the next ten years and increases taxes by over $500 billion while creating boards like the Independent Payment Advisory Board to disrupt the doctor-patient relationship.
Energy Policy: Casey Jr. has waged an all out war on coal. He has failed to stop the Environmental Protection Agency's assault on energy production in Pennsylvania. Casey Jr. refused to stop the EPA's attempts to regulate greenhouse gases and its Cross State Air Pollution Rule. He also refused to stop the costly Utility MACT rule that will lead to higher electricity prices and cost the Commonwealth thousands of jobs. He also voted to raise taxes on oil and gas companies, while giving green energy companies special tax breaks.

Negative information about several candidates and campaigns targeted by CAGA in the month of October has now appeared on private web pages not found on any other site. CAGA currently maintains a seemingly stock website with the URL "cagafacts.com". The site is void of public-facing content, information, links, an index/site map, or any other data with the exception of a small text box in the middle of the page listing basic information about "CAGA FACTS". In Union Square the chess players sit alone under the statue of George Washington waiting for a game. A Latino family, father, mother and son, sit on the sidewalk holding cardboard signs and singing. "I'll be your friend, when you're not strong." The big chain stores are closed but the bodegas are open and Muslim and Chinese storekeepers charge up to ten dollars for a gallon of water. New York City in blackout, in short, is much like New York City as usual. The electronics stores are closed and the wine stores are open. A chalk sign outside one darkened store reads, "Screw electricity." NYU students crowd the bus stops and French tourists elbow their way through the crowd on the way to a cheaply expensive hotel. A massive ancient tree lies torn out of the earth in the old 16th Street park and residents crowd around sticking their iPhones through the 19th Century ironwork of the shuttered park to get a photo. A photo of devastation. Recording disaster has become instinct. I saw dozens of people taking photos on September 11 and the number would have increased by a factor of x10 If the modern smartphone with its 8 megapixel camera had been present in 2001. A click of a touchscreen and the photo is uploaded to Facebook to be shared around the world with people who like gawking at broken things. The departure of the internet accompanies the return of drive time news radio and the shocking reminder of what the media is really like. On WINS a cheerful male anchor runs through the list of catastrophes. "Gone in Sixty Seconds," he says about a flooded town, almost chuckling at the joke. "The town of Little Ferry sure lived up to its name," he says of another. The obscenities repeat themselves every 10 minutes intersecting with audio clips of survivors who only have a few seconds to mention the water or how much they lost before the whole things cut to a commercial. With a million Con Edison customers out of power, the commercial is naturally for Con Edison, but it isn't one of those, "We're working as hard as we can" ads that utilities run while their customers curse them in the dark, instead it's an ad touting Con Edison's Diversity Supplier Program which distributes supplier contracts based on race, instead of competence. Even liberals would not have been reassured by the timing.

Obama's Unprecedented Collapse Among Catholic Voters Puts Midwest in Play

Yesterday, the Romney campaign told reporters that it expected to win at least some of the "blue states" in which it is now competing with Obama in the Midwest, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The campaign did not give a specific reason for its optimism, but one thing these states have in common is a high proportion of Catholic voters. And Catholic voters have shifted dramatically towards Mitt Romney.
In September, the left and the media were exultant when the Pew poll seemed to show a surge for Obama among Catholic voters. He led by fifteen points, 54-39.

But with Election Day just a couple of days away, the mainstream media continue to give little or no attention to it; instead, they are focusing on the horse race and the latest political polls.

Hollande warns Iran after meeting Israeli PM

French President Francois Hollande on Wednesday said he wanted "concrete acts" from Iran to prove it was not pursuing a nuclear arms drive after his first face-to-face meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
At a press conference with Netanyahu, whose aim during a two-day visit to France is to seek more pressure on Iran, Hollande warned that Paris would back "other sanctions" if Tehran failed to convince on its contested nuclear programme.
"This is a threat which cannot be accepted by France," Hollande said.
"We have voted for many sanctions and are ready to vote others as long as necessary," he said, demanding "proof that Iran has abandoned this drive".

With early voting underway already, more examples are being found across the nation of problems at polling places.
The latest comes from Marion County in the battleground state of Ohio, where Joan Stevens tried to vote for Mitt Romney Monday on an electronic touch screen, but Barack Obama's name kept lighting up.
According to the Marion Star, it took her three tries for her choice to be accurately recorded.
"You want to vote for who you want to vote for, and when you can't it's irritating," Stevens said.
Stevens says she alerted Jackie Smith, a Board of Elections member, who reportedly told her the machine had been having problems all day.

WASHINGTON -- Reviewing the last few months of this tumultuous presidential campaign, I see the debates as having a wondrous salience. The first was the most momentous since Nixon vs. Kennedy, though that 1960 confrontation was mostly a matter of cosmetics. Listening to it on radio, many in the audience came away thinking that the participant with the five-o'clock shadow had won. That would have been Richard Nixon.
In debate this time around, Mitt Romney hammered Barack Obama mercilessly. Under the ongoing assault Obama's knees buckled and he repeatedly looked glassy-eyed. If the contest were a prizefight, the referee should have stepped in. Actually, I felt sorry for Obama. My tax-bracket notwithstanding, I did not want to see Mitt hit him again, but he did: the economy! the national debt! joblessness! However, the debate was not a prizefight. It was the first of three presidential debates, and though restrained in the next two contests Romney accomplished just what he wanted. The debates left him looking reasonable, informed, competent, and presidential.

Mayor Bloomberg: I'm Not Giving Up on the Oceans!

In one of the least surprising and least significant endorsements of 2012, Mayor Bloomberg has come out for Barack Obama. Bloomberg cited "climate change" as one of his reasons for endorsing Obama, so apparently he hopes that if Barack can just have another four years, he will be able to do something about those pesky oceans.
So this seems like a good time to remind our readers of the prequel to Hurricane Sandy, the great hurricane of 1938-apparently they didn't have names then-that killed 256 people in New England and New York. Winds were measured at up to 183 mph:
"Climate change" has been with us for a long time. How old is the Earth, 4 or 5 billion years? Yeah, about that long.

Earlier this week, a Rasmussen poll showed Romney leading in the most important of all states, Ohio, by 50 to 48.
All of these results seem plausible to me. However, if you shifted the margins by 2 points in favor of Obama, each would still strike me as plausible.

Crunching the numbers in Nevada

In response to my post about early voting in Nevada, an astute (but admittedly partisan) reader from that state crunches the numbers, makes a few assumptions, and concludes that Romney has a pretty good shot at carrying Nevada:
For what it is worth here is my back of the envelope review of where we are at in NV. The NV early voting is now about D+6½ which is a modest improvement from week one. My working assumption has been we need to get below D+5 in the early vote to have a fighting chance. But wanting to stay optimistic I figured I would run a couple of calculations based on the independent spread and crossover votes as reflected in the latest PPP poll (Romney wins independents by 9%, 12% of Democrats vote Romney, and 8% of Republicans vote Obama). The NV early vote as of 10/31/12 at 11:30 is:
Dem - 235,514
Rep - 200,678
Ind - 96,872
42% of registered voters have voted so far (533,064) with probably about another 480,000 still to vote.
For simplicity I ignored the third party vote, assuming they will draw about equal from each party. Using the PPP independent and crossover numbers I calculated the current Obama vote as follows: 235,514 x 88% + 200,678 x 8% + 96,872 x 45.5% = 267,383 (50.2%). The Romney vote: 235,514 x 12% + 200,678 x 92% + 96,872 x 54.5% = 265,681 (49.8%).
Under these assumptions, Romney and Obama are within 2,000 votes. Since Republicans tend to vote more on election day that should give Romney a pretty good chance for a win.
The crossover and independent vote assumptions might be optimistic in NV, but I think they are possible, perhaps even conservative. I believe there are quite a few Democrats that will cross over to Romney this year and fewer Republicans that will crossover to Obama. I am quite biased, and this could be wishful thinking (I am sure the liberal NV political guru John Ralston would think so).

One of my last projects at AEI was writing and producing, with my frequent writing partner Ken Green (who nailed it on The News Hour last night), a series of short videos on basic energy literacy. One of the biggest problems for office holders, the media, and the public alike is that energy seems simple. Why not? you plug things in or throw a switch, and voila!-it works! But in fact energy is not so simple, nor is it one thing. (Quick: give me a one-sentence definition of "energy." If you say "oil, gas, and nuclear," you flunk the quiz.) The distinction between wire-conveyed electricity and portable liquid fuel energy is one basic distinction that gets lost in the shuffle, for example, which is why you hear politicians say "let's build more windmills to reduce our dependency on foreign oil." Most people, I joke, think "British Thermal Unit" is a new underwear line from Calvin Klein. The lack of basic energy literacy is one reason why dumb ideas like wind and solar, or "energy independence," are so persistent in our public discourse.

Administration Ignores Law, Delays Exposing New Regulations
After three years of hyper-regulation, the Obama Administration has noticeably slowed its rulemaking in recent months. A variety of major rules have been parked in prolonged "review" by the White House, while the regulatory agenda required by statute has failed to materialize-twice. This flouting of the law is disturbing enough, but it's made worse by the mounting regulatory uncertainty that has ensued. Congress mandated a regulatory agenda from each agency in 1980, under the Regulatory Flexibility Act. The statute calls for release every April and October of a summary of all rules likely to have a "significant economic impact" on a substantial number of small firms. Subsequent executive orders extended the requirements to all regulations under development or review by some 60 departments, agencies, and commissions. President Obama has ignored both the April 2012 and October 2012 agenda deadlines. The last agenda from the Administration, with 2,676 regulations, was published in fall 2011. The President's neglect of the law contradicts his promise of an "unprecedented level of openness in government transparency." Notice of upcoming regulatory actions is an essential tool of government transparency and accountability. The agenda enables citizens to participate in the rulemaking process, businesses to plan, and Congress to engage in oversight. The stakes are especially high now because of the hundreds of rules yet to be finalized relating to the Dodd-Frank financial regulation statute and Obamacare. The Administration has postponed action of late on some of its most ambitious regulations. For example, stricter standards on ozone emissions have been shelved until 2013. The original proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency would cost $90 billion or more annually and, potentially, jeopardize millions of jobs. Also on hold are various regulations to control power plant emissions of so-called greenhouse gases that would dramatically increase energy costs, as well as the designation of coal ash as a "hazardous substance"-estimated to cost $79 billion to $110 billion and thousands of jobs in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Missouri and Ohio. There is ample reason to believe that this recent "draw-back" of rulemaking portends a regulatory tsunami in the coming year. Of particular note is the large number of proposed regulations that are piling up at the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), the department within the Office of Management and Budget which reviews rules before they are published in the Federal Register. According to OIRA data, a whopping 78 percent of the 151 regulations awaiting review have been pending at the office for more than 90 days-thus exceeding the maximum time allotted under executive order. Among the most costly:
- A Department of Transportation rule to require a rear-view camera and video display for all new cars and trucks, at an estimated cost of up to $2.7 billion.
- Revisions to the so-called Boiler MACT rules that impose stricter limits on industrial and commercial boilers and incinerators. The EPA pegged the cost of its original proposal at $9.5 billion, but independent analysts estimated the cost to be as much as $20 billion.
- Energy conservation standards for walk-in coolers and freezers as well as commercial refrigeration, which would apply to virtually all equipment used in retail food stores. This is estimated by the Department of Energy to increase manufacturing costs by $500 million over four years.
- Department of Labor restrictions on worker exposure to crystalline silica (fine particles of sand common to mining, manufacturing and construction). One analysis submitted to OIRA by engineering and economic consultants estimated compliance costs would be $5.5 billion annually, the loss of 17,000 "person-years" of employment, and $3.1 billion of economic output each year.
It would be good news for both the economy and consumers if the rulemaking delays are a result of more thorough cost analysis or consideration of regulatory alternatives. But there's no indication that the Administration has embraced a newfound skepticism toward red tape. The evidence instead suggests that a multitude of major rules are simply awaiting release next year. No one knows for certain, of course. But that very uncertainty is itself damaging to the economy. That is one important reason Congress requires the Administration to disclose its regulatory intentions in semi-annual agendas. President Obama should follow that law. Why Medicare Must Be Reformed
Medicare is shaping up to be a deciding factor in the debate over our nation's future.
As Heritage's Bob Moffit and Alyene Senger explain in a recent paper, "Why Traditional Medicare Must (and Will) Be Reformed," the status quo in Medicare is unsustainable and unacceptable due to the program's structural and financing flaws.
Here are just two reasons Medicare needs to be reformed:
- Medicare spending is growing faster than any other federal program. Medicare spending has reached unsustainable levels and is contributing to our budget deficits more quickly than any other program. Further, over the long term, Medicare has made $37 trillion worth of benefit promises to future seniors that are simply not funded. The hospital insurance trust fund is projected to be insolvent by 2024.
- While seniors have paid for their benefits, their payments do not cover the costs of the program. In 2011, approximately 88 percent of Medicare's spending was funded by taxpayers. A large part of the problem is the erroneous belief that seniors have fully paid for their benefits. In fact, Moffit and Senger explain that, "on average, a one-earner couple who retired at age 65 in 2011 and earned an average wage will have paid just $60,000 into the program but will receive an estimated $357,000 worth of benefits."
Without reform, Medicare's future is bleak. Washington's current policy is to perpetuate the status quo and hope that an outdated combination of price controls-or the latest Medicare payment rate tweaks imposed under Obamacare-will control costs and deliver better benefits at a lower cost. Don't bet on it. Only reforms that inject real competition into the program and empower seniors to control their own health care decisions can save the program for the next generation.Read the rest on The Foundry >> |

"We have made woman a sex creature," complained a psychiatrist at the Margaret Sanger Clinic, according to Betty Friedan's 1963 book The Feminist Mystique. A half-century later, a new Obama ad proudly likens voting for the first time to a young woman losing her virginity. You've come a long way, baby. But not necessarily forward. Women's liberation is parodying itself in "The First Time" spot featuring Lena Dunham, 26-year-old creator of the shockingly sexualized HBO series Girls. "Your first time shouldn't be with just anybody," Dunham provocatively begins the ad. "You want to do it with a great guy." "My first time voting was amazing," says Dunham. She salaciously describes her vote for Barack Obama as a rite of passage to womanhood, dangling a policy teaser about free birth control along the way. It is an astonishingly base, sex-centric monologue that degrades public discourse and demeans young women in particular. Seeing sexual double entendre everywhere is typically the sport of sophomoric boys. Now adults are using it to stoop for the youth vote-and expecting women to fall for it. "The First Time" is the lowest yet in a year of new political lows when it comes to infantilizing women. First, liberals fabricated the "War on Women" to shroud a bumbling Obamacare mandate that trampled on religious liberty. The coercive policy requires, with few exceptions, coverage of abortion drugs and contraception despite conscience objections. When religious charities sought relief, liberals accused them and their defenders of assaulting women's freedom-as if the First Amendment's religious freedom protections don't apply to women, too. Then they brought us the government-driven Life of Julia. The faceless female seemed hardly capable of taking a step in life without government intervention from the "hubby state," as one observer dubbed it. Now, "The First Time" combines sexual and political debut-and vulgarizes both. In a day when more than 40 percent of children are born outside of marriage (and therefore six times more likely to experience poverty) and one out of four teen girls has a sexually transmitted disease, it is brazenly irresponsible of any leader to play on premarital sex in this way.
But it is particularly sad that the purported champions of women's interests would objectify female sexuality for political ends. It's hard to imagine any woman not being revolted, anyone with a daughter not being scandalized. The ad actually flaunts its own short-sightedness: "Think about how you want to spend those four years. In college-age time, that's 150 years." It's true that with our current policy trajectory, America's horizon seems limited.
But to attribute centennial significance to an undergrad's matriculation-or a presidential term-is to lose all sense of history. To sexually pander toward the youth vote is to degrade the sober calling of citizenship. And to so trivialize female sexuality is to deal a setback to the dignity of women. See the next item for the latest developments in the Benghazi-gate scandal. Consulate Feared Attack Fox News released another exclusive report yesterday on the Benghazi debacle. According to an August 16th cable, security officials warned Washington that the Benghazi consulate likely could not be defended against a coordinated jihadist attack. The consulate had convened an "emergency meeting" the previous day to evaluate the deteriorating security conditions in Benghazi. The primary concern was the growing presence of known Al Qaeda and Islamist militias in Benghazi. The cable warned, "the Benghazi militias have become more brazen in their actions and have little fear of reprisal from the (government of Libya.)" The Fox report is yet another damning indictment of Obama's inexplicable and incompetent foreign and national security policies. Ambassador Stevens repeatedly asked for additional security, and this administration did nothing. Officials responsible for the consulate's security warned it was largely unprotected and Al Qaeda was swarming in the area, and this administration did nothing. When the consulate and the ambassador came under attack and urgently requested reinforcements, this administration did nothing. My friends, there is something you can do. VOTE! On November 6th, vote for candidates who will take the threat of radical Islam seriously. Vote for candidates who will make sure our men and women in uniform have the resources they need. Vote for candidates who don't apologize for America and who will defend our values! Another Democrat Prostitution Scandal Why is this administration and its Democrat allies haggling with prostitutes? First, we learned that Secret Service agents charged with protecting President Obama on a visit to Colombia refused to pay the full fee for the services of a "high-priced escort." Now Democrat Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey is accused of seeking prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. The allegations against Menendez have only become public because he reportedly did not pay the full price. Two women are accusing Menendez of paying just $200 when they had agreed on $500. Senator Menendez is up for reelection this year, but has a wide lead in the polls. It is unlikely that this story will end his career. But there is some irony here because Menendez was very vocal in calling for the Secret Service agents to be fired, and he was a big supporter of the Lilly Ledbetter Act legislating equal pay for women. Yet when it comes to certain women, Democrats evidently don't want to pay what they are demanding. Christie Campaigns For Obama? My heart goes out to the people of New Jersey. I can only imagine the pressure that is on Governor Chris Christie to get his state back up to speed after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. But in the middle of a campaign that is going to determine the future of our country, Governor Christie seems politically tone deaf. He is going out of his way to heap praise on Barack Obama. At worst it makes you wonder whether he's trying to undermine Mitt Romney or thinking only about himself. Remember Christie's keynote address at the GOP convention? It was heavy on self-promotion and barely mentioned Mitt Romney until the end. The media are having a field day with headlines like "Jersey Bromance" and "A Sandy Love Story." There is speculation that Christie is looking to the future. He's up for reelection next year. If he is assuming that Mitt Romney will lose next week and he wants to be a serious contender in 2016, he can't do it as the defeated former governor of New Jersey. Embracing Obama won't hurt his chances at reelection in blue New Jersey. But conservative Republican primary voters aren't likely to forget it ether. I certainly won't forget, nor will other conservative leaders. Whatever Christie's motivations, here is my unsolicited advice to Mitt Romney: When you win Tuesday, do not put the governor of New Jersey on your short list for cabinet appointments.

DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described the Medicare reforms proposed by GOP Vice-Presidential nominee and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) as "literally a death trap for seniors." White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that Ryan's reforms would "change Medicare as we know it."
But it was Obamacare that already changed Medicare as we know it, transforming it literally into a death trap for seniors. Obamacare cut Medicare by $716 billion over the next 10 years alone, mostly by slashing Medicare payments to doctors and hospitals. And that is just a down-payment on what is to come.
