State Department emails from day of Libya attack show militant group on radar

A series of internal State Department emails obtained by Fox News shows that officials reported within hours of last month's deadly consulate attack in Libya that militant group Ansar al-Sharia had claimed responsibility.
The emails provide some of the most detailed information yet about what officials knew in the initial hours after the attack. And it again raises questions about why U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice, apparently based on intelligence assessments, would claim five days after the attack that it was a "spontaneous" reaction to protests over an anti-Islam film.
Ansar al-Sharia is a group in eastern Libya that sympathizes with Al Qaeda. A member of the group suspected of participating in the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi has been arrested and is being held in Tunisia.
The emails obtained by Fox News were sent by the State Department to a variety of national security platforms, whose addresses have been redacted, including the White House Situation Room, the Pentagon, the FBI and the Director of National Intelligence.
Fox News was told that an estimated 300 to 400 national security figures received these emails in real time almost as the raid was playing out and concluding. People who received these emails work directly under the nation's top national security, military and diplomatic officials, Fox News was told.

Below is the document and insight from Bret Baier. The email was sent at 11:57 pm ET on September 11, 2012. The subject line of the email reads "Benghazi Shelter Location Under Attack CBU" The body of the email reads as follows: "SBU DS Command reports the current shelter location for COM personnel in Benghazi is under attack by mortar fire. There are reports of injuries to COM staff."

Glenn Beck Connects the Dots in Benghazi Attack: 'This Is Fast and Furious Times 1,000'

During his show on TheBlazeTV Wednesday night, Glenn Beck said President Barack Obama has "crossed a line" concerning the "lies" about the terrorist attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi on Sept. 11. In fact, he claims "Benghazi-gate" is "Fast and Furious times 1,000."
"I don't think that we are going to have time to be able to get this out to the American people before the election, because the press is of no help," Beck said. "You need to try to listen and get your friends to listen next door because this isn't about politics. This truly is about the future of the country because we are in grave, grave danger."
Beck explained that America has had three major scandals in the White House: Former President Richard Nixon's Watergate, the Iran-Contra scandal with former President Ronald Reagan and former President Bill Clinton's sex scandal with Monica Lewinsky.

Secret Service attention fails to dampen violent Twitter comments

Despite the issue garnering a significant amount of media interest as well as the attention of the Secret Service, Obama supporters continued their threats to riot and assassinate Mitt Romney if Obama loses in the aftermath of last night's presidential debate.
As we reported last week, Twitter has been flooded recently with violent comments from Obama supporters. The increase in volume of the comments seemed to coincide with Romney's poll numbers edging higher against Obama.
Not only have Obama voters been making open threats that they will riot and cause mayhem, they have also been caught making direct threats to assassinate Mitt Romney, prompting the Secret Service to announce that it was "aware" of the threats and would "conduct appropriate follow up if necessary."
Despite the fact that the media reported extensively on threats made against Obama prior to the 2008 election, their silence on the threats made against Romney has been deafening. Indeed, the act of a few old guys hanging up empty chairs in reference to Clint Eastwood's RNC speech garnered substantially more coverage and concern from the press compared to hundreds if not thousands of tweets threatening violence against Mitt Romney.
Americans who simply display political signs expressing opposition to Obama's policies have been treated as potential violent threats by authorities in the past, and yet not a single Twitter user has faced retribution for making direct and sometimes graphic death threats against Romney.

- Door Knocking: We can create walk lists for your neighborhood targeting persuadable voters. We'll also provide the campaign literature. You go out and change the minds, change the polls - MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. Click here if you want maps for your neighborhood.

- Sign Blitzing: We have 1500 new signs anti-Casey signs (3 versions, 500 each, samples in the photo above). We will also be getting 10,000 Tom Smith signs next week. Joint Rally: Tea Parties, 912 Patriots
and allied groups
Next Saturday, October 27th, is the day when groups from our region gather together at King of Prussia Mall for an afternoon joint sidewalk rally in support of Senate candidate Tom Smith, and our next president Mitt Romney.
We invite all fellow Tea Parties, 912 Patriots and other area groups from city and suburbs to participate, along with West Chester Sheepdogs and Warriors' Watch, plus any of your friends and family who wish to join us.
Signs: There are many worthy issues and causes; Audit the Fed, School Choice, Repeal O'Care and the like, but these will be around and still hot well after the election on November 6th. So let's put them on hold until later. And I urge you to avoid signs that show whatsisname's name. It serves no useful purpose and only rouses feelings of defensiveness in his supporters, especially this close to the election.
Putting first things first for this rally means we raise awareness of our candidates, most especially Tom Smith, to replace Casey. Without a senate majority, Romney will be hamstrung in getting any of his programs through.

King of Prussia Sidewalk Rally
Location: The sidewalk at Route 202 & Mall Boulevard at King of Prussia Malls, by the Wells Fargo Bank. This is the turn where Mall Boulevard leads you between the two malls.
In the three hours we're there, we're seen by 10- to 14,000 passing motorists and passengers. This is reputed to be the largest mall in the U.S. And soon to grow larger by about one-third!
Parking: Park in the large lot adjacent to the Wells Fargo property. Do not park in their lot.
Schedule: Saturday, 1:00 to 4:00 P.M.; or to 5:00 if we're pumped by audience reactions. or whatever you can handle. Bring a folding chair if you like. And water.

PITTSBURGH - The Smith for Senate campaign today announced a debate with Senator Bob Casey, to take place on Friday, October 26, at WPVI's studio in Philadelphia. The debate will be broadcast on Sunday, October 28, and available for rebroadcast after 2:00 pm on October 28, 2012 (and within 72 hours of the original airdate & time) by any television/cable outlet, or radio station that wishes to do so.

When I was first informed of iGive, I was skeptical. I've seen these ideas come and go. Often, they're too good to be true. Or there are all kinds of glitches and problems.

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.
The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.
Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.
Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.
The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.
The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization
 Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.
The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. It also discusses how the agents of radicalization in the Nashville Muslim community have been aided by collaborators in the establishment media, politics and the so-called "interfaith" community.

THERE IS A GROWING awareness among Americans that religious freedom in our country has come under sustained pressures. In the public square where freedom of religion meets public policy, it becomes clearer all the time that there is a high price to be paid for being true to one's conscience. This is no tale of Chicken Little-although a chain of chicken sandwich restaurants based in Atlanta is part of the story. Let me give you a few examples.
In our universities, those citadels of toleration, we find that toleration can be sharply limited. At the Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, the student chapter of the Christian Legal Society was denied any status on the campus because it would not abandon its requirement that members commit themselves to traditional Christian norms regarding sexual morality. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling in 2010, held that the student group's rights were not violated by a "take all comers" policy. Following this lead, Vanderbilt University has rewritten its student organizations policy and effectively chased every traditionally Christian student group off campus, denying them regular access to campus facilities. And at the University of Illinois, an adjunct professor of religion, hired to teach a course on Catholicism, was let go because a student complained about his patient explanation of the Catholic Church's natural law teachings on human sexuality. (He was later restored to his teaching duties, but at the expense of the Newman Center, not on the state payroll.)

ONCE UPON A TIME, hardly anyone dissented from the idea that, for better or worse, the United States of America was different from all other nations. This is not surprising, since the attributes that made it different were vividly evident from the day of its birth. Let me say a few words about three of them in particular. First of all, unlike all other nations past or present, this one accepted as a self-evident truth that all men are created equal. What this meant was that its Founders aimed to create a society in which, for the first time in the history of the world, the individual's fate would be determined not by who his father was, but by his own freely chosen pursuit of his own ambitions. In other words, America was to be something new under the sun: a society in which hereditary status and class distinctions would be erased, leaving individuals free to act and to be judged on their merits alone. There remained, of course, the two atavistic contradictions of slavery and the position of women; but so intolerable did these contradictions ultimately prove that they had to be resolved-even if, as in the case of the former, it took the bloodiest war the nation has ever fought. Secondly, in all other countries membership or citizenship was a matter of birth, of blood, of lineage, of rootedness in the soil. Thus, foreigners who were admitted for one reason or another could never become full-fledged members of the society. But America was the incarnation of an idea, and therefore no such factors came into play. To become a full-fledged American, it was only necessary to pledge allegiance to the new Republic and to the principles for which it stood. Thirdly, in all other nations, the rights, if any, enjoyed by their citizens were conferred by human agencies: kings and princes and occasionally parliaments. As such, these rights amounted to privileges that could be revoked at will by the same human agencies. In America, by contrast, the citizen's rights were declared from the beginning to have come from God and to be "inalienable"-that is, immune to legitimate revocation.

Fla. Republicans receiving fake ineligibility letters aimed at suppressing their vote

The Florida Department of State's Division of Elections is investigating a number of fraudulent letters sent to voters in the state questioning their citizenship and voter eligibility, in a possible attempt to keep them home on Election Day.
"The Florida Department of State unequivocally opposes all attempts at voter fraud or intimidation and will pursue every avenue to ensure free, fair and open elections for all eligible voters," Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner said in a statement. "Voter fraud and intimidation can deny voters their voice in government and will not be tolerated."
The statement alerted the public of the fraudulent letters, which claim to be from Florida election officials and imply that the recipient might be ineligible to vote.
Charles Callaghan, a Republican from Ponte Vedra, received one of the fraudulent letters Saturday.
"Basically, when I read the letter, I got the impression that I was not going to be able to vote, because my citizenship was being questioned," Callaghan told The Daily Caller. "I wasn't quite sure why it would be, because I was born in the United States, and I've always been a United States citizen, and nothing has changed in my life ... that would cause my citizenship to be called into question."

1. The Extremists Who Report the News
I'm sending Richard Mourdock some money and you should too. I want to explain to you just how extremist the media is on abortion and just how much spinning in favor of killing kids the media does.
According to Gallup polling, roughly a quarter of the population supports Richard Mourdock's position on abortion - that the only exception in support of abortion should be the life of the mother.
According to Gallup polling, roughly a quarter of the population supports Barack Obama's position on abortion - any time during pregnancy until the moment of delivery. And of course, we all know that Barack Obama actually supports infanticide too in cases when a baby survives an abortion attempt, but OMG Politifact claims otherwise!!!!!!!
When the media chooses to report stories about abortion, the media consistently chooses to report stories like Richard Mourdock's statement and Todd Akin's statement, both of whom believe that children conceived as a result of rape are still human beings entitled not to be ripped apart in utero and scrapped out of the womb or whatever procedure the child killers use these days. As an aside, during the Mourdock controversy few in the media reported that Mourdock's Democratic opponent has sponsored pro-life legislation with Todd Akin.
When you see the anchor on the news broadcast or read the reporter's story in print, understand that they more likely than not are perfectly and fully fine with killing kids - it's a choice, not murder to them. More than that, many of them are perfectly fine killing the children until the moment of delivery.
The contrast in media coverage between the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention was striking. The GOP maintained its long held position on abortion and the media went into overdrive discussing it and the so called "war on women." The Democrats, on the other hand, abandoned their "safe, legal, and rare" position on abortion from the Clinton era and moved back to abortion on demand. The media barely made a sound about it, even though it is well outside the mainstream of American opinion on abortion. As Josh Trevino noted on twitter, "Barack Obama is the only President in American history known to have described a child as a punishment." 2. Barack Obama's Potemkin Bipartisanship
One of the major reasons why Mitt Romney was able to make such rapid inroads against Barack Obama in their first debate, and why poll after poll shows that independent voters have turned decisively against Obama, is that Romney was able to lay bare the hollowness of Obama's claims to bipartisanship. And given the Obama record of the past four years, there is no reason to believe he will ever learn his lesson.
For a reminder what real bipartisan leadership looks like, recall Bill Clinton. Clinton's first two years in office were - aside from championing NAFTA and GATT with Republican support and passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act - a series of lurches to the left, some successful (he added to George H.W. Bush's tax hikes), some unsuccessful (Congress blocked his proposals for universal health care and a BTU tax), and just a few ending in compromise (Don't Ask, Don't Tell). Voters responded by running Democrats, in a landslide, out of their 40-year House majority, their Senate majority and a bevy of state governorships to boot. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
3. Obama's Hubris Will be His Undoing
Barack Obama has lost North Carolina and Florida.
His ground game is at near parity in early voting with the GOP, the GOP is more energized, and he is going to lose both.
But he will not stop spending money in those two states and redirect the resources to Ohio, which is now a must win state for him. He will not do it because he does not want news stories to come out in the last two weeks of the campaign that he's closing up show in two battleground states.

In the aftermath of the second town-hall style Presidential debate, Democrats pounced on a statement made by Governor Romney concerning a question about equal pay for women in the workplace. His explanation of how his administration worked with women's groups included recounting that the women's groups brought them "binders full of women." Some say you had a super majority in your first two years and had this incredible opportunity, but because of what you were talking about, as you were running, you had to go to get Obamacare done. If you're Senator Bob Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania, an embattled incumbent with a shrinking lead over a little-known opponent, you generally don't want the former governor of your state, Ed Rendell, and your chief media consultant, Saul Shorr, getting into a public spat. You really don't want that former governor griping to the press that you "haven't run a campaign" and that you've run only "one ad, a stupid tea-party ad." You don't want your own staffer - Shorr - in turn accusing Rendell of "ignorance" and of being "the governor of Philadelphia."
Things may be going wrong for Senator Bob Casey Jr. at the worst possible time in the campaign, and a window of opportunity for Republican challenger Tom Smith may be opening up.

Trump: Anticlimactic, But Entertaining

Donald Trump made his big announcement this morning, in the form of a YouTube video. It turns out he doesn't have anything at all on President Obama; nothing, that is, except a proposition: he offers to make a donation of $5 million to a charity of Obama's choice if Obama will release his college and passport records, including applications:
It's pretty funny, but it won't lead to anything. What is going on here is that many people believe Obama applied to college (either Occidental or Columbia, or both) as a foreign student from Kenya, and received preferential treatment or scholarship aid on that basis. This is pure speculation, but I suspect it may be correct. It is consistent with Obama having stated in his literary bio for many years that he was born in Kenya, and it explains why Obama's college records are such a closely-guarded secret. Be that as it may, there is zero chance that Obama will do anything in response to Trump's offer, except perhaps to ridicule it so as to revive the "birther" meme. Obama won't mention, of course, that he himself was the original birther.
Gloria Allred's supposed bombshell, on the other hand, turned out to be a total dud. She wants to unseal testimony in a decades-old divorce case-an old Obama specialty!-involving a former CEO of Staples. Apparently Mitt Romney testified in a deposition about the value of certain stock (presumably Staples) owned by the company's CEO. At a hearing in Massachusetts this morning, Romney's lawyer did not object to his testimony being made public.

On Monday night Barack Obama asserted in the debate that the sequester (the budget device compelling "devastating" defense cuts, according to Defense Secretary Panetta) "will not happen." Following the debate, White House and campaign officials quickly backtracked on Obama's remarks.
As Paul writes, Obama also falsely attributed the sequester device to Republicans. What a guy.
In his off-the-record teleconference with the publisher and editor of the Des Moines Register (background here), just made public with the blessing of the Obama campaign, Obama brought up the sequester on his own and described its wonders:
Q [from DMR editor Rick Green]: Great. Mr. President, we know that John Boehner and the House Republicans have not been easy to work with, and certainly you've had some obstacles in the Senate, even though it's been controlled by the Democrats. At the time, whenever - we talked a lot about, in 2008, hope and change. I'm curious about what you see your role is in terms of changing the tone and the perception that Washington is broken. But particularly, sir, if you were granted a second term, how do you implode this partisan gridlock that has gripped Washington and Congress and basically our entire political structure right now?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, Rick, let me answer you short term and long term. In the short term, the good news is that there's going to be a forcing mechanism to deal with what is the central ideological argument in Washington right now, and that is: How much government do we have and how do we pay for it?
So when you combine the Bush tax cuts expiring, the sequester in place, the commitment of both myself and my opponent - at least Governor Romney claims that he wants to reduce the deficit - but we're going to be in a position where I believe in the first six months we are going to solve that big piece of business.
It will probably be messy. It won't be pleasant. But I am absolutely confident that we can get what is the equivalent of the grand bargain that essentially I've been offering to the Republicans for a very long time, which is $2.50 worth of cuts for every dollar in spending [sic], and work to reduce the costs of our health care programs.
And we can easily meet - "easily" is the wrong word - we can credibly meet the target that the Bowles-Simpson Commission established of $4 trillion in deficit reduction, and even more in the out-years, and we can stabilize our deficit-to-GDP ratio in a way that is really going to be a good foundation for long-term growth. Now, once we get that done, that takes a huge piece of business off the table.
There's much that can be said about this, but let's focus one of the fantasies being spun here. Obama fantasizes immediate post-election victory over Republicans via the sequester, and continues the answer with a fantasia on the good things to come:
The second thing I'm confident we'll get done next year is immigration reform. And since this is off the record, I will just be very blunt. Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community. And this is a relatively new phenomenon. George Bush and Karl Rove were smart enough to understand the changing nature of America. And so I am fairly confident that they're going to have a deep interest in getting that done. And I want to get it done because it's the right thing to do and I've cared about this ever since I ran back in 2008.
So assume that you get those two things done in the first year, and we're implementing Wall Street reform, Obamacare turns out not to have been the scary monster that the other side has painted. Now we're in a position where we can start on some things that really historically have not been ideological. We can start looking at a serious corporate tax reform agenda that's revenue-neutral but lowers rates and broadens the base - something that both Republicans and Democrats have expressed an interest in.
I've expressed a deep desire and taken executive action to weed out regulations that aren't contributing to the health and public safety of our people. And we've made a commitment to look back and see if there are regulations out there that aren't working, then let's get rid of them and see if we can clear out some of the underbrush on that. Again, that's something that should be non-ideological.
My hope is, is that there's a recognition that now is a great time to make infrastructure improvements all across the country. And we can pull up some of the money that we know we're going to be spending over the next decade to put people back to work right now at a time when contractors are dying for work and interest rates are really low.
And, again, that's something that even John Boehner - John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, they've got a bridge linking Cincinnati and Kentucky, and the bridge is so broken down that folks are having to drive an hour and a half of extra commuting just to get across the Ohio River. There's no reason why we can't work on things like that and put people back to work.
So I just want to contrast with what happens if Mitt Romney is elected. I know that he likes to talk about his Massachusetts record. The truth is there really were two Mitt Romneys. There was the Mitt Romney who initially got elected, passed Obamacare, and was interested in being the governor of Massachusetts. After his second year, it was the Mitt Romney who was running for president and abandoned all his previous positions.
And the problem you've seen in this campaign is he's made commitments - his first day he's got to introduce a bill to repeal Obamacare. And that's a commitment he cannot back off of. That is a huge, messy fight. His first day in office, he has to make some commitments in rolling back things like the Consumer Finance Protection Board we put in place on Wall Street reform. His budget - the Ryan budget - there's no way that, if he's president, he can avoid having a showdown on a budget that his running mate introduced, or a variation of it, because he's committed to cutting spending by 20 percent across the board on discretionary and increasing defense spending by $2 trillion.
Obama contrasts the fantasy in which he presides over the enactment of his wish-list by a compliant Congress with the legislative battles that would follow a Romney victory.
Imagine! It's easy if you try.
UPDATE: Obama is of course exploiting the will to believe among his friends at the Register. About that famous Cincinnati bridge, for example, a reader writes:
I am 59 and lived in the Cincinnati area my entire life. This statement ("the bridge is so broken down that folks are having to drive an hour and a half of extra commuting just to get across the Ohio River") is false on its face. That bridge is fully used every day. It is the I-75 bridge across the river. Have you heard of I-75 being shut down? Does it back up at rush hour? Yes and it has for twenty years. Are all lanes open on it? Yes. What is holding up its replacement? Money and regulations. The current plan is to build a replacement within 100 yards of the existing bridge. Of course that requires an environmental impact study on the potential effects of the bridge! The total cost estimate is one billion plus. Why? I don't know but I know there isn't that much steel or concrete needed.

Is this 1980 or 2004? (updated to include chart link)

Throughout this political season, political junkies have wondered whether the Obama-Romney race more closely resembles the Carter-Reagan contest of 1980 or the Bush-Kerry race of 2004. The former featured an unsuccessful, unpopular president and a challenger about whom the public was, for some time, highly skeptical. The latter pitted a president about whom the public was highly skeptical against a challenger who was rather unpopular.
My instinct told me that this year's race is more like 1980. But until recently, the polling data, though not necessarily inconsistent with a 1980 scenario, suggested that this is more like 2004.
But check out this great chart from Real Clear Politics, and you will see that we are starting to diverge from the 2004 model. The pre-first debate polls from both that year and this one show the incumbent with a clear lead, with Bush's generally a bit larger than Obama's. The polls following the first debate show a tighening of both races.
But by late October 2008, Bush had restored much of his lead, and was ahead by 2.5 to 3 points. By contrast, Romney is ever-so-slightly ahead of Obama in the RCP average.
Along the same lines, consider that, so far as I recall, John Kerry never got to 50 percent in any of the polls I looked at, whereas George Bush occasionally crossed that threshold. This caused me to write shortly before the election that Kerry would have to break new ground to obtain a majority of the popular vote, something I doubted he would accomplish.
But Romney has been over 50 percent in several Gallup polls and is at 50 percent in the latest Rasmussen survey. Moreover, the Real Clear Politics averages suggest that Obama must break more new ground than Romney to secure a popular majority.
What to conclude? First, the polls still say this will be a close race, along the lines of 2004, rather than the rout we witnessed in 1980. And I believe the polls in this respect. Second, though, the 2004 model should no longer provide great comfort to Team Obama.

More thoughts on debate moderators, gender, and age

Yesterday, I expressed the hope that the 2016 presidential and vice presidential debates will serve up better female moderators than Martha Raddatz and Candy Crowley. One reader-friend asked if I could suggest such a moderator.
I can: Gwen Ifill.
Here is what I wrote about Ifill after she presided over the vice presidential debate in 2004:
Tonight's vice presidential debate featured two superb performances. Unfortunately for John Edwards, they were delivered by the incumbent and by moderator Gwen Ifill. . . .
I hope our readers won't mind if I start with Ifill. Because we attack the MSM so often, it seems only fair to praise one of its members when praise is due, and it is certainly due tonight. I saw not the slightest hint of bias on Ifill's part. She asked mostly tough, mostly intelligent questions of both candidates, and somehow managed to be stern, friendly, and entertaining all at the same time. If she can keep it up, the presidential debates could be blessed for decades with that rarest of "brokers" - one that is both fair and intelligent.
Ifill ran into controversy in 2008 because she moderated the vice presidential debate even though she was set to publish a book about Barack Obama. I argued that this raised legitimate conflict of interest questions, and I still believe that Ifill should not have moderated debates in the 2008 cycle. However, her actual performance as a moderator in the Biden-Palin debate was not, in my view, problematic.
Come 2016, Ifill should be on the shortlist for another turn at moderating.
Come to think of it, the list of qualified, competent moderators in that cycle may be short, indeed. Bob Schieffer is 75 years old, and says he will moderate no more. Jim Lehrer is 78. If we're talking about gender, it's fair to wonder who, if anyone, among the male MSM establishment can take their places.
In fact, the real issue here may be generational. Lehrer and Schieffer are relics of an era when the MSM, although hardly unbiased, contained significant precincts in which the distinction between covering news and making it held some sway. With the passing of that generation, we may be condemned to a steady diet of Raddatz-Crowley types regardless of gender.

The Obama Campaign, that strange 4 year marriage of Generation X hipsters, inner city bosses, suburban college educated boomers longing for racial healing, Big Green businessmen and shady Saudis, appears to be finally sinking beneath the waves. It isn't going out in a blaze of glory, but with mumbles of trending topics. Obama was always a petty man and his campaign has descended into pointless pettiness, into Team Big Bird, binders full of women and bayonets and horses. Like so much hipster culture, it exists so that the participants can entertain each other with something that no one else thinks is funny or clever. And that elitism is precisely the point. It's the last resort of losers who hide from their lack of taste behind walls of exclusivity. Abandoning mass appeal, Obama is getting back to his roots of entertaining upper middle class college kids with his 'hipness'; both actual college kids and the overgrown middle aged variety that make up the professional class of the mediacracy who treat the rest of the country the way that they treated the natives on their Peace Corps assignments. The Obama Campaign was never serious, but it once aspired to an Oprah level of seriousness, to the dignity of the self-help sections where trite observations are recited with great solemnity so that they sound like they must mean more than they do.

For months conservatives have criticized the obviously Democrat-friendly samples used in any number of polls, samples giving Dem respondents anything from a 6 to 13 point edge over the GOP.
But times have changed as even polls using samples which favor Democrat participants are showing Mitt Romney with a lead over Barack Hussein Obama.
The Suffolk University poll of likely Ohio voters uses a voter registration sample of 39% Democrat, 35% Republican and 27% Independent. But the 4 point advantage for Democrat Party members yields a 3 point advantage in the poll for Mitt Romney, 48-45. (1)

Two Hours
Benghazi-gate did not come up in Monday night's debate, but the issue isn't going away. News broke last night that the State Department sent three emails to the White House and other government agencies on the afternoon of 9/11 informing them of the attack on the Benghazi consulate.
The first message, reporting the attack, was sent at 4:05 PM. The second message, sent at 4:54, reported that the firing had stopped. The third message, sent at 6:07, reported that an Al Qaeda linked group, Ansar al-Sharia, was claiming responsibility.
So within two hours of the initial report, the White House knew the Benghazi attack was a terrorist attack, not a spontaneous mob protesting over an Internet movie. Yet for two weeks that lie was spread repeatedly by Barack Obama and his top officials. If Barack Obama were a Republican president, the media and its left-wing allies would be chanting, "People died and Obama lied!"
Business Leaders To Voters: Think Carefully
More than two dozen highly respected, very successful business leaders recently signed an open letter in USA Today urging the American people to "think carefully about what kind of country we are creating for ourselves and coming generations" before they vote.
The list of signatories includes entrepreneurs like Jack Welch, Roger Hertog, Mel Karmazin and Ken Langone. The letter blasts Obama's class warfare as a distraction from his "own policy failures." You can read more here.
We also got another warning about Obama's policy failures and the grim future ahead if Obama is reelected and conservatives fail to retake the Senate. Yesterday Autozone released its annual report, which stated very clearly that Obamacare "could have a significant, negative impact on our business."
Autozone and other companies won't just "eat" this loss. There will be higher prices for consumers and more Americans unemployed and working fewer hours. Darden Restaurants (owner of Red Lobster and Olive Garden) is already cutting back staff, and now it is reducing the number of hours part-time employees can work because of Obamacare.
Eastwood's Back!
Remember how media and political elites were so convinced that Clint Eastwood's speech at the Republican National Convention was an utter disaster and embarrassment? Their reaction is a perfect example of just how out-of-touch the left-wing echo chamber is with the rest of America. And it's a good reminder of why we should ignore them.
As it turns out, Eastwood was a hit with Middle America. So much so that American Crossroads has produced a new ad featuring Clint Eastwood telling voters "our country just couldn't survive" four more years of Barack Obama. The ad was wildly popular with focus groups and will run in the key battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Virginia. Watch it here.
Obama's Surprise
The Washington rumor mill is rife with buzz about an anti-Romney "October surprise" coming out from the Obama campaign. There are reports of irregularities with voting machines in North Carolina. Republican voters in central Florida have reportedly received letters telling them they are not registered and should not try to vote on Election Day.
In the days ahead, we will report more on what we are hearing, including some possible October surprise scenarios you should be looking for.
Today Donald Trump made his big announcement: If Barack Obama will release his college records and passport applications, Trump will donate $5 million to any charity Obama chooses.
If I were Barack Obama, I would do it. He could silence, if not embarrass, Donald Trump and put Trump's money to good use for needy inner-city children, perhaps the many victims of Chicago's gang violence. Assuming, of course, Obama has nothing to hide.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) credits The Heritage Foundation with inspiring him to run for public office and advance conservative ideas.
Heritage, he said yesterday at Heritage's President's Club meeting in Washington, revealed to him the connection between political ideas and strong local communities. This led him to run for public office on a Heritage-inspired platform: "Bring Freedom Home."
DeMint said he was never interested in politics as a young professional. But his work as a market researcher prepared him for public office because he understands how to promote ideas.
Once in Congress, he sought Heritage experts to further develop his policy proposals.
"You need a real big think tank with a lot of smart people to put [policy] together," he said. "Without The Heritage Foundation and its critical mass of data and policy analysis, what I do wouldn't be possible."
Other speakers at the President's Club meeting included keynote speaker Charles Krauthammer, who critiqued liberal policies and predicted conservatives will win in November.

"Job one for a new Congress and a new administration must be repeal" of Obamacare, Heritage Foundation health care expert Nina Owcharenko said today at Heritage's President's Club meeting in Washington.
To advance a conservative, patient-based health reform, Owcharenko said lawmakers must fix the tax treatment of health insurance to allow individuals to purchase their own coverage, independently of their employers.
Fortunately, the 2012 House budget takes steps in the right direction on health care and reining in entitlements. Heritage experts will work to ensure the 2013 budget is also consistent with Heritage's Saving the American Dream plan.

Obama's Imperial Presidency, Part II
Sometimes the law just gets in the way.
The Obama Administration hasn't needed Congress to enact new regulations on the Internet, businesses, energy production, and religious institutions. It has used its power to give struggling labor unions a new edge. It has granted amnesty to illegal immigrants.
This blatant disregard for the law-and unilateral creation of new laws-is documented in a detailed new report from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA). Based on investigations in committees of the House of Representatives, the report lays out more than 40 examples of the Administration's going around Congress to make its own "laws," ignoring existing laws, circumventing the regulatory process, making its own "law" by waiving existing laws, creating "super agencies," and setting up federal programs that were not authorized by Congress.
When its unilateral lawmaking wasn't enough, the Administration has carved up the law by selectively issuing waivers so that the inconvenient parts could be avoided. Instead of education reform, the Administration issued waivers of No Child Left Behind's requirements to coax states toward its new education plans. Instead of honesty about Obamacare's effects, the Administration issued waivers to selected health plans to ease the blow.
Matthew Spalding, Vice President for American Studies and Director of the B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics at The Heritage Foundation, wrote about the imperial presidency in June:
We can now see before us a persistent pattern of disregard for the powers of the legislative branch in favor of administrative decision-making without-and often in spite of-congressional action. This violates the spirit-and potentially the letter-of the Constitution's separation of the legislative and executive powers of Congress and the President.
It wasn't long after Spalding wrote these words that The Wall Street Journal expressed a similar concern: "When Congress won't do what he wants, he ignores it and acts anyway." That same month, Obama's Health and Human Services Department gutted the work requirements out of welfare reform.
Cantor's report shows that no matter the circumstances, the President has found his way around the people's representatives:
In some instances, President Obama attempted to garner legislative authority, failed and then acted unilaterally in defiance. In other instances, the President never even sought to find consensus and instead ignored Congress and its authority from the outset. In speeches, the President has proudly acknowledged that he has acted without Congress, contending that he has no other alternative.
Not only has he turned lives and businesses upside down with his harmful policies, but President Obama is also setting a dangerous precedent. Who's to say the next President won't come in and do exactly the same thing? Regardless of the executive's party or policy positions, this is not what the presidency is supposed to be. It's simply outside the President's authority, as Spalding explains:
The President has unique and powerful responsibilities in our constitutional system as chief executive officer, head of state, and commander in chief. Those powers do not include the authority to make laws or to decide which laws to enforce and which to ignore.
It is critical that Americans understand the Obama Administration's mode of operation. The law has not stood in its way. Congress has not stood in its way. It seems to recognize no authority but its own.
