New York Times: Weapons Going to al-Qaeda in Syria

"Most of the arms shipped at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to supply Syrian rebel groups fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad are going to hard-line Islamic jihadists, and not the more secular opposition groups that the West wants to bolster, according to American officials and Middle Eastern diplomats," the New York Times reported on Monday.

In other words, the CIA and the fanatical Wahhabists in Saudi Arabia and Qatar are supporting and arming al-Qaeda in much the same way they did in Libya. In order to mute this reality, the Times describes the rebels as "hard-line Islamic jihadists" and repeats the widely debunked fallacy that the United States really wants to support "more secular opposition groups" attacking the government of Syria.

PITTSBURGH - The Smith for Senate campaign today announced a debate with Senator Bob Casey, to take place on Friday, October 26, at WPVI's studio in Philadelphia. The debate will be broadcast on Sunday, October 28, and available for rebroadcast after 2:00 pm on October 28, 2012 (and within 72 hours of the original airdate & time) by any television/cable outlet, or radio station that wishes to do so.

"Tom welcomes the opportunity to contrast his detailed plan to create jobs, balance the budget, and reduce the debt with Senator Casey's record as a failed career politician who has voted to increase the debt, raise taxes, and weaken Medicare," said Smith Campaign Manager Jim Conroy. HAZLETON October 10, 2012 - A coalition of conservative organizations, politicians, and voters will gather on October 20^th in Hazleton, PA to unite in what they have been calling "a grassroots effort to restore America's foundations."

The Conservative Voter Rally is openly supported by at least nine conservative groups from across the region, and the state. Six special guest speakers are scheduled to address deeply held conservative beliefs such as low taxes, limited government, a strong military, and traditional moral values.

Main supporters include organizations such as: First District Republicans, God in Government, Pennsylvania Pastors Network, Luzerne County Young Republicans, Tea Party Patriots, Victory Bible Church, 94.3FM "The Talker," and Citizens Alliance of Pennsylvania.

The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq

Daniel Greenfield's new Freedom Center pamphlet, The Great Betrayal: Obama's Wars and the War in Iraq, is an effort to understand the politics of the "war on terror" which has now reached a final punctuation point with the U.S. decision to speed its withdrawal from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan (where success was once deemed so crucial to national security), and to practice an incoherent form of regime change in Libya while ignoring more serious threats in Syria and Iran.

The war on terror began, Greenfield shows, as an admirable bipartisan commitment soon after the tragedy of 9/11-an effort to transcend party lines not only to punish those who attacked our country but also to interrupt planning for further attacks and try to stop the international spread of the Islamic jihad behind the attacks. But the Democratic Party, with the honorable exception of a few individuals like Richard Gephardt and Joe Lieberman, turned its back on a war soon after authorizing it, and did so at a time when American troops were facing hostile enemy fire.

Although Senate Democrats on the intelligence oversight committee had been granted access to every piece of data available to the White House, they now accused President Bush of tricking them to secure their approval. In fact, their own about-face was entirely dictated by political considerations when a Sixties antiwar activist, Howard Dean, surged ahead in the Democratic primary polls and it appeared for a moment that Americans were on the side of retreat and capitulation.

Although regime change in Iraq had been official U.S. policy since Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, Democratic senators such as John Kerry who only months earlier had supported the war effort now launched demoralizing attacks on the American commander-in-chief and his troops in the field, stigmatizing it as "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time." If the truth was the first casualty of their war against the Bush administration, the second casualty was the principle of bi-partisanship that had guided foreign policy debates throughout the Cold War, the principle that "politics stops at the water's edge." Now partisan politics trumped security.

The unrestrained attacks on the Iraq War as illegal and unjustified went largely unanswered by Republicans who failed to call the Democratic saboteurs of the nation's war effort to account or to decry the risk their cynical attacks posed to American servicemen and women on the battlefield. As Greenfield demonstrates, the Democrats' partisanship had consequences not only in Iraq but elsewhere in the region: the paralysis that resulted from their "anti-war" campaign led straight to the destruction of Lebanon and the installation of a terrorist army, Hezbollah, there as a regime within a regime. And it emboldened an overtly Islamofascist regime in Iran not only to supply the IEDs responsible for most of our troop fatalities in Iraq but also to proceed with a nuclear program aimed directly at Israel and the West.

The Great Betrayal shows that Barack Obama's abandonment of Iraq is a betrayal of all the Americans and Iraqis who gave their lives to establish freedom in that country. And the result of his policies in Afghanistan has been as disastrous. While the President presented his rationale for pursuing war there as the pursuit of al-Qaeda, after abandoning his "surge" (which resulted in two thirds of all America's Afghan casualties there and the resurgence of the Taliban allies of al-Qaeda), he blithely prepared for withdrawal as if national objectives had been met.

"Losing our Sons": Documentary looks at domestic Islamic radicalization and jihadization

Charles Jacobs at Americans for Peace and Tolerance announced today the release of a trailer for their upcoming documentary, "Losing Our Sons", featuring Melvin Bledsoe - father of domestic terrorist Carlos Bledsoe aka Abdulhakim Mohamed who gunned down US Army recruiter Pvt. William Long at an Army-Navy recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 2009. Melvin Bledsoe testified at the House Homeland Security Committee hearing earlier this month.

The upcoming documentary discusses how Bledsoe was radicalized by the Muslim Student Association in Tennessee and sent to terrorist training in Yemen with the written recommendation of the imam of a Nashville mosque. 1. Obama Wins Debate And It Shows In The Polls

The left was delirious. After Obama had lied and blustered his way through the debate with Mitt Romney Tuesday night they were sure he had turned it around.

The verdict is in and Captain Kickass rose to the task.

Today's Rasmussen Poll, which includes one day of post-debate data, gives Romney a 49-47 lead. Yesterday, like Tuesday, it was 49-48 in favor of Romney.

Today's Gallup Poll has Romney holding a 52-45 lead over Obama. This is a seven day average that includes one day of post-debate data. On the day of the debate Romney led 50-46.

2. Obama Contemplates Arming Syrian Rebels. What Could Go Wrong?

One of the many critical foreign policy problems confronting the Obama ineptocracy is the unraveling of Syria as a national entity. While we all welcome the departure of the odious Assad clan from power, whether by aircraft or hoisted on pikes, it is unfortunate that this dangerous event, an event so rich with possibilities, has happened under this president.

At first glance, other than the human cost, one is tempted to pop some popcorn, open an good microbrew, and root for injuries. The regime is allied with Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah. If it falls, there is a very good chance that the Hezbollah cancer can be excised from Lebanon and Lebanon will stop being a Syrian colony. On the other hand, the rebels are composed of heaven-knows-what plus al Qaeda. Thrown into the mix is Turkey which wants Assad gone and a stable Syria it can dominate, Saudi Arabia which wants another theocratic kleptocracy in the region, and Qatar because it is bored. Israel is standing clear of the conflict and popping popcorn. As a congresswoman, Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) backed legislation to block funding for body armor and medical supplies for U.S. troops. The current Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate co-sponsored legislation in every session of Congress from 2003 until 2009 to allow taxpayers opposed to the military, Department of Defense, and various intelligence agencies to withhold their tax dollars from being spent in support of those entities. Specifically, the legislation allowed individual taxpayers to block funding that would be used, "the training, supplying, or maintaining of military personnel." Your editorial is right to query the intentions of President Obama and the drafters of the 2012 Democratic platform in omitting language calling for the isolation of the terrorist organization Hamas; about no Israeli return to the perilous 1949 armistice lines; and on the need for Palestinian refugees of the 1948-49 war and their millions of descendants to be resettled in a future Palestinian state ("The squeaky plank of the Democratic Party," Sept. 5).

All these things were contained in the 2008 Democratic platform. Their absence in 2012 cannot be explained by dismissing the importance or practical relevance of platforms. When one adds to this that President Obama has actually condemned Israel for building homes for Jews in Jewish neighborhoods of eastern Jerusalem; called publicly for Israel to return to the 1949 lines "with agreed swaps" (which would thus give Palestinians a veto over Israel retaining anything beyond the 1949 lines); and continued funding the Palestinian Authority even as such funds continue to reach Hamas in Gaza, these omissions are clearly not accidental.

While one can be pleased that the convention decided to reinsert language from the 2008 Democratic platform on God and on Jerusalem being the capital of Israel that had originally been omitted from the 2012 Democratic platform, one cannot help observing that doing this was bitterly opposed by at least one-half of the delegates. Clearly, the disaffected delegates were either booing God or the Jewish state of Israel, or both.

Free speech is dying in the Western world. While most people still enjoy considerable freedom of expression, this right, once a near-absolute, has become less defined and less dependable for those espousing controversial social, political or religious views. The decline of free speech has come not from any single blow but rather from thousands of paper cuts of well-intentioned exceptions designed to maintain social harmony.

In the face of the violence that frequently results from anti-religious expression, some world leaders seem to be losing their patience with free speech. After a video called "Innocence of Muslims" appeared on YouTube and sparked violent protests in several Muslim nations last month, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned that "when some people use this freedom of expression to provoke or humiliate some others' values and beliefs, then this cannot be protected."

It appears that the one thing modern society can no longer tolerate is intolerance. As Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard put it in her recent speech before the United Nations, "Our tolerance must never extend to tolerating religious hatred."

A willingness to confine free speech in the name of social pluralism can be seen at various levels of authority and government. In February, for instance, Pennsylvania Judge Mark Martin heard a case in which a Muslim man was charged with attacking an atheist marching in a Halloween parade as a "zombie Muhammed." Martin castigated not the defendant but the victim, Ernie Perce, lecturing him that "our forefathers intended to use the First Amendment so we can speak with our mind, not to piss off other people and cultures - which is what you did."

Of course, free speech is often precisely about pissing off other people - challenging social taboos or political values.

This was evident in recent days when courts in Washington and New York ruled that transit authorities could not prevent or delay the posting of a controversial ad that says: "In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat jihad."

When U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer said the government could not bar the ad simply because it could upset some Metro riders, the ruling prompted calls for new limits on such speech. And in New York, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority responded by unanimously passing a new regulation banning any message that it considers likely to "incite" others or cause some "other immediate breach of the peace."

Such efforts focus not on the right to speak but on the possible reaction to speech - a fundamental change in the treatment of free speech in the West. The much-misconstrued statement of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes that free speech does not give you the right to shout fire in a crowded theater is now being used to curtail speech that might provoke a violence-prone minority. Our entire society is being treated as a crowded theater, and talking about whole subjects is now akin to shouting "fire!"

Rise of the Mediacracy

A nation where governments are elected by the people is most vulnerable at the interface between the politicians and the people. The interface is where the people learn what the politicians stand for and where the politicians learn what the people want. The bigger a country gets, the harder it is to pick up on that consensus by stopping by a coffee shop or an auto repair store. That's where the Mediacracy steps in to control the consensus.

 

The media is no longer informative, it is conformative. It is not interested in broadcasting events unless it can also script them. It does not want to know what you think, it wants to tell you what to think. The consensus is the voice of the people and the Mediacrats are cutting its throat, dumping its body in a back alley and turning democracy into their own puppet show.

Media bias was over decades ago. The media isn't biased anymore, it's a player, its goal is turn its Fourth Estate into a fourth branch of government, the one that squats below the three branches and blocks their access to the people and blocks the people's access to them. Under the Mediacracy there will still be elections, they will even be mostly free, they just won't matter so long as its upper ranks determine the dialogue on both sides of the media wall.

The Mediacracy isn't playing for peanuts anymore. It's not out to skew a few stories, it's out to take control of the country. In military empires, the military can act as a Praetorian Guard. In political empires, it's the people who control the political conversation who also control the succession.

ZOA Calls Upon Pres. Obama to Cease Support for Supplying Muslim Brotherhood Syrian Rebels

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has called upon President Barack Obama to cease U.S. support for supplying weaponry to the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist rebels in Syria, which has been reported to be occurring in recent weeks. As the ZOA has pointed out repeatedly, the Muslim Brotherhood is an Islamist movement that has incubated Islamist terrorist movements and whose platform calls for jihad, a theocratic Muslim state, sharia law with its barbarous punishments and discrimination against non-Muslims and women. 

Yet, according to a recent New York Times report, "Most of the arms shipped at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to supply Syrian rebel groups fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad are going to hard-line Islamic jihadists, and not the more secular opposition groups that the West wants to bolster, according to American officials and Middle Eastern diplomats. That conclusion, of which President Obama and other senior officials are aware from classified assessments of the Syrian conflict that has now claimed more than 25,000 lives, casts into doubt whether the White House's strategy of minimal and indirect intervention in the Syrian conflict is accomplishing its intended purpose of helping a democratic-minded opposition topple an oppressive government, or is instead sowing the seeds of future insurgencies hostile to the United States. 'The opposition groups that are receiving the most of the lethal aid are exactly the ones we don't want to have it,' said one American official familiar with the outlines of those findings, commenting on an operation that in American eyes has increasingly gone awry" (David E. Sanger, 'Rebel Arms Flow Is Said to Benefit Jihadists in Syria,' New York Times, October 14, 2012).

Earlier this year, President Obama signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose the Assad regime and that Muslim Brotherhood elements involved in the armed uprising against the Assad regime in Syria have been the beneficiaries. While the U.S. is not itself supplying lethal weapons, U.S. allies are, with U.S. knowledge and approval. Reports indicate that under the provisions of the presidential order, the U.S. is collaborating with a secret command center in Adana in southern Turkey that, along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Turkey had established to assist rebels (Mark Hosenball, 'Exclusive: Obama authorizes secret U.S. support for Syrian rebels,' Reuters, August 1, 2012). All three states are governed by Islamist regimes.

According to distinguished Middle East scholar, Barry Rubin, "... there is the shocking strategy by which Obama turned over management of the Syrian civil war to the ... Turkish Islamist regime, which wanted a Muslim Brotherhood government in that neighboring country. The United States thus threw its prestige behind an exile leadership dominated by the Syrian Brotherhood. If the group had not stumbled and been rejected by the internal revolutionary forces, Obama would have been parent to a Muslim Brotherhood government in Syria. And afterward, Obama and his government made no effort to channel weapons to the anti-Islamist forces in Syria - defected officers, Kurdish nationalists, liberals, and apolitical instant warlords. Qatar and Turkey were allowed, under U.S. supervision, to arm the Brotherhood; Saudi Arabia gave weapons to the Salafists" (Barry Rubin, 'The Powerlessness Excuse: Debunking the Claim that Obama Could Not Have Affected the "Arab Spring" and Islamist Takeovers,' PJ Media, October 15, 2012).

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, "We know full well that the Baathist regime of Bashar Assad is a monstrous, murderous and dangerous regime. We look forward to the day that it falls. But we are also well aware that the situation in Syria is such that many elements in the rebel forces are themselves monstrous, murderous and dangerous Sunni Islamists belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood and similar organizations.. Such forces will not only carry out their own bloodbaths and repression should they take over in Syria, but also imperil peace and security in the region. It is a vital interest that they do not take over when and where the Assad regime leaves off.  

"The ZOA has repeatedly argued from the outset that President Obama's policy of empowering and legitimizing the extremist, jihadist Muslim Brotherhood is a terrible mistake with huge negative consequences for the region, U.S. interests and the security of Israel. 

"We urge President Obama to immediately ensure that Islamist rebels like the Muslim Brotherhood do not receive aid or arms from our Middle Eastern allies."

As health care becomes an increasingly debated topic, it is critically important for every American to understand the impact of Obamacare. The Heritage Foundation's newly updated "Obamacare in Pictures: Visualizing the Effects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act" shows through charts and graphs Obamacare's far-reaching negative effects on all Americans.

• Obamacare's cuts to Medicare. Obamacare cut $716 billion out of the Medicare program to pay for new spending in Obamacare. These cuts come from Medicare Advantage, hospice services, nursing homes, and more.
• 18 new taxes and penalties. Obamacare includes 18 new taxes and penalties that will cost Americans $836 billion by 2022. Many of these will fall heavily on the middle class, including the much debated individual mandate tax.
• The states' cost of a Medicaid expansion. The Obama Administration is pushing states to expand their Medicaid programs to the new Obamacare level. This graphic shows how much an expansion is likely to cost each state-and it certainly isn't "free."

Cross referencing Rasmussen and Battleground poll data shows Obama is way behind

 Reading some of the polls on the presidential election can be confusing.  But among the more reliable surveys two stand out as more well-grounded: Rasmussen and the Battle Ground Poll. The latest Rasmussen survey of  American's partisan identification shows Party registrations as follows: 36.8% are Republican, 34.2% are Democrats and 29% are Independents.         

There are no current surveys of how many Democrats will vote for Mitt Romney or how many Republicans will vote for Barack Obama. Nevertheless, the latest George Washington University Battle Ground Poll shows Romney getting 92% of the Republican vote while Obama is getting just 87% of the Democrat vote.

Running Rasmussen's number on registrations with the Battle Ground Poll's data we find Romney's 92 % of Republicans' gives him 33.856 points, and Obama's 87% of Democrats' gives him 29.754 points. Rasmussen says 29% of registered voters are Independents. The Battle Ground poll says Independents support Romney 56/40.

Last night a Black man asked Barack Obama a question. He said, "I voted for you in 2008, but I'm not optimistic. What have you done to earn my vote?" This was two red flags for Obama. First it came from a 2008 supporter who is presumably a registered Democrat; who has moved to undecided and it came from a Black man who is a member of a voting bloc Obama shouldn't have to worry about -right?

 This was a dangerous " dog whistle" to other African Americans that it is okay to doubt Obama and even okay to say so out loud in front of millions of people.

A new Gallup poll shows that enough Blacks have already moved from "solid Obama" to undecided to be a problem for Obama.

Romney defeats both Obama and Crowley at Town Hall

No one told Mitt Romney that he would be the lone Republican taking part in a three way debate on Tuesday night but, not altogether unpredictably, that's the way it turned out.

According to debate moderator and part-time participant Candy Crowley, it was "instinct" which forced her to intercede on Obama's behalf during the somewhat rancorous discussion of the Benghazi murder of Ambassador Stevens and 3 other Americans. When Romney stated quite correctly that it took the Obama Administration 14 days to call the Benghazi killings a terror attack, Obama protested and Crowley immediately came to his rescue, saying to Romney "he did, in fact, Sir (call it an act of terror,)"  referring to a statement given by the president the day after the killings.(1)

Obama Demands Tax Hikes

Today's Washington Post reports that Barack Obama is threatening to veto legislation preventing Taxmageddon unless congressional Republicans agree to even more tax hikes.

In our recent special report on Obamacare, we noted how Barack Obama has broken his promise not to raises taxes on the middle class. The Supreme Court declared that Obamacare was legal only because it was a tax. Five new Obamacare tax increases take effect next year. And Obama is just getting started.

This is important, folks, because it is more proof of Obama's tax-and-spend socialism, and one more example of how Obama has repeatedly misled the American people. During Tuesday's debate, Obama blamed Republicans, saying, "Governor Romney's allies in Congress have held the [middle class] hostage because they want tax breaks for the top 2 percent."

According to the Washington Post it's Barack Obama who is holding the middle class hostage with his veto threat! Obama would rather see taxes go up on middle class families than allow small business owners and entrepreneurs to keep and invest their own money.


What Taxmageddon Means To You

On January 1, 2013, Taxmageddon -- the expiration of the Bush tax cuts -- hits America. According to a study from the Tax Policy Center, nearly 90% of households will see their taxes go up. Here's what it means to you:

• Families will be hit hard as the per child tax credit is slashed from $1,000 to $500.
• The average middle class family "will see an almost $2,000 tax hike."
• Even low-income earners will pay more as the 10% tax rate goes up to 15%.
• More than $500 billion will be sucked out of the economy by higher taxes next year, likely triggering another recession.

When it comes to keeping taxes low, whom do you trust more: Barack Obama or Mitt Romney?


Obama Spends $1 Trillion On Welfare

What exactly is Barack Obama going to do with more of your money? Pay down the debt? No. Under Obama annual deficits have doubled and the national debt has increased 50%.

Today brought the startling news that government spending on welfare programs has increased 32% since Obama was elected, and for the first time ever topped $1 trillion in a single year. That figure does not include spending on Social Security or Medicare.

My friends, it wasn't that long ago -- 1987 -- when $1 trillion funded the entire federal government. Today, $1 trillion barely pays for Obama's welfare spending.


Benghazi-gate Won't Go Away

Barack Obama's attempts to deny the facts about the attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya, won't make the controversy go away. Hours before Tuesday's presidential debate, Reuters published a report that undermines claims by Obama and Biden that they were unaware of the security situation in Libya. Consider this excerpt:

"In the months before the deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya, U.S. and allied intelligence agencies warned the White House and State Department repeatedly that the region was becoming an increasingly dangerous vortex for jihadist groups loosely linked or sympathetic to al Qaeda...

"So brazen was the Islamist presence in the Benghazi area that militants convened what they billed as the 'First Annual Conference of Supporters of Shariah (Islamic law)' in the city in early June, promoting the event on Islamist websites. ... A research report prepared for a Pentagon counter-terrorism unit in August said the Benghazi conference brought together representatives of at least 15 Islamist militias. Among the paper's conclusions: these groups 'probably make up the bulk of al Qaeda's network in Libya.'"

Did you get that, folks? Al Qaeda militants were holding conferences in broad daylight, even advertising them! And this administration has the audacity to claim it had no idea there was any danger in Benghazi!


Radical Islam Still A Threat

A 21 year-old Bangladeshi man was arrested yesterday after he attempted to bomb the Federal Reserve building in Manhattan. He came to the U.S. in January on a student visa.

Does this mean we have a "Bangladeshi problem"? Of course not. The young man is a devoted follower of Osama bin Laden and a radical Islamist. Bin Laden may be dead, but the threat from radical Islam is still very alive.
 

Welfare Spending Shattering All-Time Highs

It's been a pretty big year for welfare-and a new report shows welfare is bigger than ever.

The Obama Administration turned a giant spotlight on the welfare system in July when the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proclaimed it had the authority to gut the work requirements from the welfare reform that had helped lift so many people out of poverty after 1996.

This morning, a new report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) shows the staggering reality of the growing welfare state-echoing Heritage's own research that reveals welfare spending is approaching the $1 trillion mark.

Roughly 100 million people-one-third of the U.S. population-receive aid from at least one means-tested welfare program each month. Average benefits come to around $9,000 per recipient. If converted to cash, means-tested welfare spending is more than five times the amount needed to eliminate all poverty in the United States.

Despite the fact that welfare spending was already at record levels when he took office, President Obama has increased federal means-tested welfare spending by more than a third. Benefits under "means-tested" programs are calculated based on a recipient's means to support himself; in other words, they are intended to assist low-income Americans. The character of this aid is hand-out more than hand-up. Able-bodied recipients rarely are required to work or prepare for work to receive aid.

At the beginning of this year, only four of the 80-plus federal welfare programs had work requirements; the Obama Administration has now suspended the work requirements in two of these. After the Obama Administration suspended the work requirement from the food stamp program in 2009, the number of people on food stamps doubled.

The more than 80 federal means-tested aid programs provide cash, food, housing, medical care, and social services to low-income people. Here's how the spending breaks down:

• Federal: At $746 billion, federal means-tested spending exceeded spending on Medicare ($480 billion), Social Security ($725 billion), or the defense budget ($540 billion).

• State: In 2011, state contributions into federal welfare programs came to $201 billion, and independent state programs contributed around $9 billion.

• Combined: Overall means-tested welfare spending from federal and state sources reached from all sources reached $956 billion.

Some might argue that this is a reasonable, temporary response to the recession, but Obama seeks a permanent increase in the size of the welfare state.

According to the President's budget plans for fiscal year 2013, means-tested welfare will not decline as the recession ends, but will continue to grow rapidly for the next decade. Overall, President Obama plans to spend $12.7 trillion on means-tested welfare over the next decade.

Welfare spending has long passed the amount spent on defense. In 1993, welfare spending exceeded defense spending for the first time since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In subsequent years, the ratio of welfare to defense spending averaged about $1.33 to $1. Obama's spending plans would inflate this disparity: By 2022, there will be $2.33 in federal and state welfare spending for every $1 spent on national defense.

Needless to say-but we'll say it anyway-Obama's big spending plans will result in ruinous and unsustainable budget deficits. These deficits are, in part, the result of dramatic, permanent increases in means-tested welfare. An important step in reducing the federal deficit would be to return welfare spending to pre-recession levels.

Doubling the welfare rolls, handing out benefits without any work requirements, and spending twice as much on welfare as we spend on defense: This is Obama's new normal.
