AN EXCITING YEAR - FROM THE BC WINTER GAMES TO BUDAPESTWINTERGAMES

It's been an exciting and busy year of hockey for Anna Morrish of Kamloops. She made the Thompson Okanagan zone team where they placed third at the 2014 BC Winter Games, was recruited for the Northern Alberta Hockey Association Panthers to compete at the U16 World Selects tournament in Budapest, Hungary and just finished major midget tryouts.

We chatted with Morrish about the BC Winter Games.  "It was an amazing experience for me," she said. "The team was so fun to play and spend time with.  We all got along and worked together.  I made new friends and felt comfortable.  I learned new things from the other players and coaches."

"For me, the best part of the Winter Games was the high level of hockey that I took part in.  The games were so much faster and intense.  Hardly any mistakes were made and I felt so confident in myself and teammates.  Every shift counted."

"I enjoyed playing so much!  Coming in third place was a hard worked honour.  I am so proud to be a part of the best three (3) teams in the province."

After the games, Anna was asked to join the Panthers team to attend the U16 World Selects tournament.  "I am beyond excited to represent this team as part of Canada and play international hockey," she commented.

The tournament was a little different than games Morrish is used to here in BC.  The girls played two (2) 25 minute periods on Olympic ice.  "It was a big change," said Anna. "I was so stunned at the hockey performance hockey that I took part in. Team Sweden and Team USA were the strongest teams in the tournament and playing against those girls was an amazing experience that I will treasure forever."

The team only won one (1) game in the tournament, but the the experience and memories they made will last a lifetime.

From the selection camp, 22 players will be chosen to face the United States' Women's U18 Select Team in a three (3) game series from August 21 - 24, 2014 in Calgary.  Following the series, players will be evaluated in preparation for selecting the Canadian team that will compete at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship in January 2015 in Buffalo, New York.
