Spring 2013

Greetings!

  Carol yoga

Americans spend nearly $10 billion a year on cosmetic procedures -- yet  one of the easiest ways to boost appearance is free.

A genuine smile--not just from the mouth, but from the heart--lights the eyes, softens the face and releases tension from the brow and jaw.  And this simple form of "mouth yoga" benefits much more than just how we look--it's a powerful way to brighten the lives of others and to feel better ourselves.

Mother Teresa noted that "joy shows from the eyes," and said that "when people find in your eyes that habitual happiness, they will understand that they are the beloved children of God."  When she accepted the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, she advised:  "Let us always meet each other with a smile, for a smile is the beginning of love."

Cultivate the habit of wearing a gentle smile during your yoga posture practice by paying attention to the expression on your face.  It's not uncommon for students struggling with a difficult pose to reflect this tension with scowls and grimaces--clenching their jaw or furrowing their brow--and I'll often crack silly jokes when I'm teaching class to encourage smiles.   Learning how to find ease amid challenge and to stay connected with a sense of joy is central to yoga, and our facial expression can signal how adept we are at this practice.

Off the mat, having a cheerful countenance can be a powerful way to make yourself feel better, and it can also bring smiles to the faces of those around you.  Universally recognized across varied cultures and languages, a smile can be infectious and spread joy to all those in your path.

To practice, first make eye contact and really see the other person.  Then offer a genuine smile.  It doesn't have to be a huge Cheshire Cat grin to be effective.  In fact, a gentle smile--slightly turning up the corners of your mouth or just smiling with your eyes--may be more welcome.

     In joy,

Carol yoga
