Modern culture encourages discontent -- our belly isn't flat enough, our car isn't cool enough, our gadgets aren't fast enough, even our teeth aren't white enough. This sense of dissatisfaction often spills into our everyday lives, where we fixate on what's wrong and yearn to be different or to acquire the latest "must have" item.
The yogic practice of santosha -- or contentment -- invites us to view the world through a different lens, to focus on what's right and to be grateful for our many blessings. It's not so much a change in reality as a change in perception. For example, during yoga practice, if you're having difficulty standing on one leg in Tree Pose, you might berate yourself for having poor balance, decide you're not good enough and give up. Or, you might applaud yourself for attempting something difficult, be grateful for having two legs and joyfully try again.
Once we recognize that gratitude is an attitude, we can find countless opportunities for contentment practice -- beginning with those things that we often take for granted, our health, home and family. Even if we're dealing with illness, as mindfulness meditation pioneer Jon Kabat-Zinn notes, "if you're breathing, there is more right with you than wrong with you."
Simple practices can help build the gratitude habit:
- Take a moment before eating to be grateful for your meal.
- Say "Thank You" whenever possible -- to someone who opens a door, bags your groceries, delivers your package.
- Take a cue from the old song, "If you're worried and you can't sleep, just count your blessings instead of sheep."
Many spiritual traditions teach that contentment is the key to happiness. As the Talmud says: "Who is rich? He who is content with his lot." When we learn to want what we have, we realize that we have what we want.
