Special issue for parents of juniors*                                                                                     August 14, 2016

Dear Tulane Parents,

I hope you're enjoying these last weeks of summer. We're here busily finalizing preparations for students' return to campus for fall semester. This first 2016-2017 e-newsletter (specifically for juniors' parents) has reminders of a few important procedures and deadlines for you and your student:
  • Online registration for Family Weekend is now open.  See the article below for more details.
  • August 15: Deadline for the free repair loaner subscription with a new laptop purchase from Technology Connection.
  • September 9th at 11:59 pm: Deadline for the annual enrollment/or waiver request for student health insurance.  Please see the important message below about changes to the waiver verification process.
  • We're now in the midst of hurricane season.  If you need a refresher on Emergency Preparation

and Response, you can find last month's parent webinar PDF and video in the 2016-2017 archive. If your student is now living off-campus, we recommend reviewing the State of Louisiana's preparation advice at getagameplan.org.
Many thanks to the parents who responded to the e-newsletter survey back in May.  At your suggestion, I've changed the e-newsletter to a more mobile-friendly layout which means the Quick Links are now at the bottom. I've also redesigned the Parent Programs website with an easy to remember URL for the most-used resources and information page: parents.tulane.edu/info Our new parents requested both PDF and video links for the archived webinars, so voilą! You'll hear about more improvements soon. If you have additional suggestions to offer, please answer the survey. I truly value your feedback.

Warm regards,

Student Health Insurance:  Same requirements, new verification procedure

An important message regarding student health insurance
Over the last several years, the Affordable Care Act has changed the landscape of insurance nationally, and Tulane University has seen an increase in the number of students without adequate coverage. The Tulane policy on student health insurance has been in place for many years, with the criteria that students have access to both emergency and non-emergency care in New Orleans. This is not a new policy and was not changed this year, but was put into place to assure that our students, many of which whom come from more than 500 miles from home, have access to care in the New Orleans area.

In past years, we have been lenient in the waiver process, which resulted in students being underinsured and often unable to access local care when needed. We made the decision to move to a new, more thorough waiver system to assure the existing University policy was being followed, thus reducing the number of students who were underinsured. We feel it important that our students have access to care when needed and that there be no barriers.

This year, we began using the online Gallagher waiver system to assure that fidelity to our waiver requirements were met and that we would not have students with extremely limited or no access to care. The criteria for our health insurance requirement was designed to assure . . . Read more
Upperclass Move-In Day - Saturday, August 27, 2016

Move-in
Upperclass Move-In Day for sophomores, juniors and seniors is Saturday, August 27, 2016. Shipping instructions and downloadable mailing labels were emailed to on-campus upperclass students last week (no hard copies by "snailmail" this year). If your student stored belongings over the summer with our partner Summertime Storage, remind your student that it's time to schedule the storage delivery.

Be aware that due to current construction projects on campus we are altering our New Student Move-In Day process significantly this year. So if you know the families of incoming new students, please keep in mind that they have different procedures for 2016 including assigned move-in time slots and a required pass for traffic and unloading. Even though some procedures are different, you can assure them we'll give them the helpful, spirited Tulane welcome we offered you!
Career Development Resources

Junior year is a prime time to focus on career development activities. Encourage your student to take advantage of the resources offered by the Career Services Center.  It's not too late to sign up for the 1 credit hour CRDV 1090 Career Development course. The sections open to to sophomores and juniors focus on looking for internships and jobs and
developing professional skills. Students can find more information online. They can register for the course through Gibson Online.
Register now for Family Weekend, October 28 - 30, 2016

Check your email for a separate message sent August 11 to all parents and alumni announcing registration is now live for Homecoming/Reunion/Family Weekend. The email message contains your unique 10-digit ID number and log in directions for the online registration website, homecoming.tulane.edu. If you have attended Family Weekend in the past, the system will recognize your email address when you log in. At that point you can use either your 10-digit ID number or your 5-digit home zip code to authenticate your login.

Select "parent of current student" as your "connection to Tulane" and the system will filter the events and show you the ones open to parents. You'll be able to purchase tickets to the SMU vs. Tulane Homecoming football game and sign up for other events just for parents and others open to all--current students, alumni and parents. The kick-off time for the game on Saturday, Oct. 29 hasn't been scheduled yet, but Tailgating on the Quad will start 4 hours before kick-off.

A note about seating for the football game:  Parents' seats will be in several sections of the stadium with other parents. Students have their own section. Students must show their ID and pick up their game tickets in advance at the Athletics Ticket Office. (All students will receive ticket distribution information by email in the fall.) Students' tickets are already included in their fees. If you want your Tulane student to sit with you at the game, you must add your student's name as your "guest" in your registration and pay for an additional ticket. Most parents sit in the parent section while their students sit in the student section. Typically parents visit with their students before or after the game or meet up at half-time for a while.
