A message from the Chairwoman...
 | Tina R. Hill County Board Chairwoman |
Dear McHenry County Resident:
Did you know that McHenry County government has a 14 year organizational history of strategic planning? First initiated in 1999, McHenry County has used strategic planning to get beyond narrow issues and to focus on the long-term vision, trends and critical function of the County and to then communicate that vision to staff and residents.
The County's current Strategic Planning Report Card can be found here. However, the County must periodically update its Strategic Plan to consider trends within and beyond its borders, changing demographics, value shifts, economic development, changing attitudes, tax limitations, demands for service, mandates and technological changes.
With the newly elected County Board, we are embarking on an update of our strategic vision to guide our decisions as a Board over the next three years. I truly believe that the heart of effective governance is setting priorities, making the appropriate policies, articulating the mission, and sustaining the vision for the long term. The Board's collective effort to forge an updated Strategic Plan is the roadmap to achieve this result.
Sincerely,
Tina R. Hill
County Board Chairwoman |

MCDOT Winter Operations
The McHenry County Division of Transportation (MCDOT) is prepared for the 2012-2013 winter season. Here is some information about our operation and some helpful tips for residents and drivers on our County roadway system.
The MCDOT maintains about 530 lane miles of highway throughout our County. Those roadways are divided into snow routes that average about 28 miles per route. In normal operations the MCDOT dispatches 23 large snow plow trucks to the 19 routes. The MCDOT can also supplement these routes with several smaller trucks as well. The reason for additional equipment on several of the routes is the expansion of our roadway system from two lane highways to multiple lane roadways mainly in the southeastern portion of our County. Maps of the DOT snow routes can be found on this website...Read More. |

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
The McHenry County Department of Health and the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program would like to remind women of the importance of cervical cancer screenings. January has been designated as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical cancer is highly preventable because of the availability of screening tests and a vaccine to prevent HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infections which causes 75% of cervical cancers in the U.S. Early detection makes cervical cancer highly treatable and is associated with long survival and a good quality of life.
Raising public awareness can save lives. Nearly 4,000 women in America will die this year from cervical cancer which is largely preventable. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 12,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year. A simple outpatient screening test, known as a Pap test, can find changes in the cervix before cancer develops, often in a curable stage. Pap tests are the first line of defense and are recommended for women every three years after the age of 21. Early detection of these pre-cancers can be effectively treated before they become malignant. Unfortunately, four out of five women do not receive a regular pap test.
To improve your cervical and overall health, get 30 minutes of daily exercise; eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains; drink water and limit salt intake; and get vaccinated for HPV. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention recommends a three-dose series of HPV vaccine to be given routinely to females 11-12 years old and those who have either not received the series or not completed all three doses; it can be given up to the age of 26 years.
If you are a McHenry County woman between the ages of 35 and 64 without health insurance, contact the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program at 815-334-0232, at MCDH's Crystal Lake facility, to schedule an appointment. For more information about HPV, visit the CDC at: www.cdc.gov/hpv/. |
