Dear Swami,
In the last newletter, you cited Article 520.53(H)(2) which says, "single-conductor portable supply cable sets shall be not smaller than 2 AWG conductors."
But there are Cam-lock connectors that are UL listed for wire gauges less than #2. Is that used for a grounding conductor? What if the feeder cable is used to run power for only 100 amps? The Cam-lock system has become universal for running power for almost everything over 50 amps, but the connector is rated for 390 amps. So it should only be illegal if you are using the cable for amps above its rating, right?
Signed,
Young Mr. Walter Olden (LD for Austin City Limits/owner Olden Lighting in Austin)
Dear Walter,
One of the universal truths is that The Swami really enjoys watching Austin City Limits. Thank you for contributing to that marvelous production.
As you correctly point out, there are UL listed cam-lock connectors that work with smaller gauge wire. Marinco, for example, make a UL listed mini cam connector that works with #8 wire. The restrictions listed in Article 520.53(H)(2) only pertain to 520 locations, which means theatres, audience areas of motion picture and television studios, and similar locations. Motion picture and television studios, and similar locations (like location shoots), have no such restrictions. And yes, even in 520 locations, the grounding conductor is permitted to be as small as #6.
Sincerely,
Swami Candela

BGA Greener Lighting Framework Launch
|
The Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) wants to make it easier for lighting designers, specifiers, and end users to make informed choices about the products used to light the stage. They are essentially working to do for the lighting industry what nutrition labels have done for the food industry, and that is to provide product information that might influence the decision making process. Not only will it aid in design, but also in helping to make theatre greener because, all things being equal, most people would choose a greener product. The question is, how can be sure that all things are equal?
