SUSTAINABILITY & OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY | | Ready, Set, Join ReadySetRecycle.com
by Grant Heggie
Show business can be a very wasteful industry. Thousands of tons of scenery, costumes, building materials, plus other fabricated products go into public landfills every year. Most of what is discarded could be re-used. So we've created ReadySetRecycle.com, a new website where industry professionals can list such items for sale (or giveaway). ReadySetRecycle.com is free to use and everyone is welcome.

DUMB QUESTIONS | | Introducing a New Column!
Well, this is a little embarrassing. We were going to start a new column called "Dumb Questions." The idea was that when someone submitted a dumb question, we would post it, along with the answer. But, you know what? There are no dumb questions. Or, as some brilliant person once put it, the only dumb questions are the ones that go unasked. Consider this column cancelled.
Any questions?

APT CLASSES ONLINE | | New Online Training Now Available

The Academy of Production Technology (APT), a global provider of tech training for the entertainment industry, has announced the launch of their new online classes available at http://bit.ly/Siv38x. The online classes are similar to the on-site classes with new added content.
"The online classes offer a lot of benefit and value because you can work through the material at your own pace on your own time," said Richard Cadena, founder of APT. "Plus, you don't have to take off work and miss a paycheck, and you don't have the travel expenses associated with attending an on-site class."
The classes are presented in short segments that are easy to follow. Each module includes a video and a short test to provide immediate feedback to measure your comprehension. There are also supplemental practice materials and supplemental videos to reinforce the learning process.
For a limited time, if you have previously attended a live training class then you are eligible to receive a 50% introductory discount. Just send an email to info@APTXL.com and ask for the introductory offer discount code.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS | | Download Technical Standards Free of Charge
It used to be that if you wanted a technical standard from PLASA, you had to pay for it. No more. ProSight Specialty Insurance, a global specialty insurance carrier in the film and live events industry, announced that it is partnering with PLASA's Technical Standards Program to offer any standard as a free download. Their stated goal is to "increase safety throughout entertainment production..."
According to Lori Rubinstein, executive director of PLASA, North America, "Our alliance with ProSight will have a significant impact on the entertainment industry by allowing all those involved in the creation of entertainment events free access to standards that will make their lives safer and easier. We are thrilled that ProSight shares our commitment to making sure that everyone who attends or works on an entertainment event, from a live show to a film shoot, goes home safely at the end of the day. Technical standards protect lives, prevent accidents, save money, solve problems, and encourage creativity."
The standards cover control protocols (DMX, RDM, etc), rigging, electrical, and more. To download a standards document, click here.
