ELECTRICS AVENUE | | What do those numbers mean?
If you've ever wondered about those numbers and letters on plugs and connectors, like L6-20 or 5-15, here's some information from the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. |
CODES AND REGULATIONS | | What's the difference between grounding and bonding?
The terminology in the National Electrical Code can be very confusing and it doesn't help that it sometimes changes. The language dealing with grounding and bonding is a prime example. Apparently, the language and definitions for "grounding conductor" have changed since the 2011 version of the NEC. It used to be that the green conductor was called the grounding conductor but now it's called the "equipment grounding conductor" on the supply side of the system and the "bonding conductor" on the load side. So from the service panel on, it's now the bonding conductor. The term "grounding conductor" has been deleted from the definitions in the NEC, and it has been replaced by "grounding electrode conductor" or "bonding conductor." The illustration shows the new terminology and what it means.
