Oakley Honored as 2017 Playful City USA Community 
National non-profit KaBOOM! is honoring the City of Oakley with a 2017 Playful City USA designation for the second time. Playful City USA honors cities and towns across the country for putting the needs of families first so kids can learn, grow and develop important life skills. The recognition is given to communities that make it easy for all kids to get balanced and active play through programs, policies and infrastructure.

A Message from Chief Thorsen Regarding Fireworks 
As I write this, we are approximately two months from the July 4th celebration. Each year, in all communities, the holiday is used as a justification for the discharge of illegal fireworks. Each year, the Oakley Police Department receives hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints regarding illegal fireworks on July 4th. The complaints range from pets that are extremely frightened by the noise and commotion of fireworks, to veterans who suffer an adverse reaction to fireworks. Last year, several fires were reported, these fires were ignited by the careless use of fireworks. All fireworks are prohibited.

Children's Spring Concert This Friday
Join us for the Children's Spring Concert featuring the Oakley Elementary School District Choir. Choir Director Shannon Page leads the children in a fun and lively program of songs to showcase these talented youngsters. The concert takes place this Friday, May 19th at 7pm at Civic Center Plaza, 3231 Main Street in Oakley. Admission is free and all are welcome! A short reception with refreshments will follow the concert. For more information, call Cindy at (925) 625-7044.

OYAC Oakley's Got Talent & Relay For Life Event 
Have you seen the purple ribbons throughout Oakley lately? The American Cancer Society and the Oakley Youth Advisory Council have "Painted the Town Purple" in celebration of the annual Relay for Life event taking place this Saturday, May 20th from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Freedom High School Football Field. This year the Oakley Youth Advisory Council will have a team participating at the Relay for Life.

In addition, the OYAC presents the first Oakley's Got Talent Competition which will be held during the Relay for Life event on Saturday. Come see individuals and groups sing, dance, play an instrument, or show off a hidden talent!

Oakley Celebrates Public Works Week
The City of Oakley's Public Works Week Event will be taking place on Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 9 am - 12 pm at the City of Oakley Civic Center. We will be accommodating age groups from 1st to 3rd grade students from a neighboring elementary school as well as a group of home schooled students from the community. The departments objectives are designed to increase public awareness of the contributions made by our community's public works professionals who serve the public everyday with quiet dedication. Helping students to know and understand the world of public works and the importance of its role in our community life is one of the highlights of National Public Works Week.

Memorial Day Observance- Save the Date! 
The City of Oakley will hold its sixth Annual Memorial Day Observance Ceremony on Saturday, May 27th, 2017 at the Civic Center Park, 3231 Main Street beginning at 10:30 a.m. Oakley's program will include the Presentation of Colors, performance from the Freedom High School Choir, a student decoration of the memorial wreath, three -volley salute, taps, and more. We hope to see you there!

Taste of Oakley Success
The 3rd Annual
Taste of Oakley was held this past Saturday at City Hall.   Guests were treated to a variety of tasty dishes including a large selection of desserts from local businesses.    Attendees had a chance to meet with the restaurateurs, grocers and caterers from Oakley to learn about their menus and catering options.  This popular event sells out each year so be sure to get your tickets early next year.  The City of Oakley wishes to thank all the businesses who participated - Lucia's Baked Delights, Lucky Supermarket, Taquiza Limon, Tasha's Dynamite Bakery, C & C BBQ, Grocery Outlet, 2 Legit To Pit BBQ, Jalisco's, Sabrina's Pizzeria, Black Bear Diner & Guanatos Ice Cream.
