City Council Meeting Debrief
On Tuesday, April 18th the City Council and City Staff met for the annual Strategic Planning Meeting. To begin, Mayor Higgins welcomed all attendees and accepted public comments. This was followed by a quick introductory activity that allowed for some reflection and an overview of Oakley then and now. Oakley's come a long way since Incorporation, however, population continues to grow and progress continues. We are on track to soon be the 8th largest city in the County. Having incorporated in 1999, the analogy was made that Oakley is in its adolescence. Having a much more modest budget then surrounding cities requires the most prudent and strategic use of all funds.

After the tone was set, each Department/Division manager provided reports on the current status of their Department/Division including Staffing levels, highlighted strategic goals, and spoke to the future. While many of the Departments/Divisions spoke to their lean operations and the tipping points requiring new staff, those comments were substantiated by comparisons citing the California State Controller's Report. For example, Oakley's General fund is $17 million, compared to Brentwood and Antioch's budgets that are well over $50 million. The larger budgets are also reflected in the staffing levels and wages. Oakley's ratio to residents is 1 to 451, compared to Brentwood's 1 to 140 and Antioch's 1 to 214.

Here We Goat Again!
With the extra wet winter of 2016/17 the crop of weeds growing in Oakley is especially lush and tall.

The City of Oakley Public Works and Engineering Department is continuing its annual cleanup of storm water basins, channels and other sites with the return of our contract herder and his happy goats.

The first site visited was the Stirrup Drive basin where they arrived over the previous weekend. One adjacent resident who lives nearby to the basin said he is really pleased with the job the goats have done and was happy to see them arrive again this spring.

Passport to Science 2017 Recap
Oakley's Annual Science Week wrapped up this past Saturday after eight days of exciting Science-related activities and workshops! This popular program would not be possible without the support of our partners who host and facilitate programs including the East Bay Regional Park District, Delta Science Center, Friends of Marsh Creek, Ironhouse Sanitary District, the Oakley Youth Advisory Council, and our newest partnership with the Freedom High School STEM Academy.

More than 1200 people attended to see live reptiles and raptors. Participants learned how  to build a kite, make ice cream and bottle rockets, and how to write code to make video games.  Participants learned about our community's waterways including Marsh Creek and the Delta.  They learned about water conservation, water treatment, and the hazards of pollution.
