New Security Measure Improvements
City of Oakley Safety Committee and Police Chief Chris Thorsen recently assessed the security at and around City Hall and the Police Department to determine if more could be done to protect employees and citizens.

Chief Thorsen said, "In today's environment we felt it was important to attempt to lower the security risks and ensure our employees are kept as safe as possible around City Hall and at the Police Department building."

To eliminate some risk and help protect employees and citizens, protective barriers have been installed around the exterior of the buildings and surveillance video cameras have been installed in public spaces, such as the entrances and exits, and all lobby areas.

Safety barriers include large natural boulders installed around the most vulnerable exterior sides of the buildings. They blend in with the landscape and are aesthetically pleasing and prevent vehicles from crashing into the buildings. Additionally, bollards were installed at the entry doors of the Development Services Department and Police Department.

Mayor Sue Higgins said, "I'm pleased we have proactively tightened up our security. If it can prevent or possibly be a deterrent to any attack on an employee or citizen, then we will have met our objective."
Veteran's Parking
There's now a dedicated parking spot for our veterans at City Hall. Thanks to the veterans community for proposing and providing the sign. It's a small way to pay honor to those who protect our freedoms and may have even been wounded in service. May this small action make veterans feel appreciated as they transition back into civilian life.
You, Me, We Oakley! Citizenship Drive- Volunteers Needed
You, Me, We Oakley!  in partnership with the International Institute of the Bay Area will be hosting a Citizenship Drive on Saturday, January 28 in the City Council Chambers. During the event, trained YMWO Ambassadors will assist qualifying individuals with the application process, which is the first step to becoming naturalized citizens. Trained volunteers help by signing in applicants, screening for eligibility, completing the N-400 (Naturalization Application) and providing further resources to attendees. After the event all applications are reviewed by the IIBA Staff attorney for quality control before the applications are mailed off for processing by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Volunteers are still needed. If you're interested in helping please contact Gaby by calling 925-625-7011.  There are no language requirements to volunteer. All are welcome!
