Tree Removal on Brown Road
|
The roots of ash trees that were planted by developers in 2008 along the planters on Brown Road between Carpenter Road and Neroly Road are causing damage to the curb, sidewalk, and street. These roots are very invasive and will continue to cause more severe problems to the curb, sidewalk, and street. The safety of the public and elimination of trip and fall hazard for pedestrians is the City's priority. After extensive review by professional tree arborists, it was determined that root pruning is not feasible in many cases, and could lead to decay and instability of the trees, which then becomes a safety issue.
As part of an effective long term solution, approximately 80 ash trees will be removed and replaced with new Chinese Pistachio and Ginkgo trees that will be aesthetically pleasing and appropriate for the parkway planters, and eliminate damage to the curb, sidewalk, and street and also eliminate trip and fall hazard for pedestrians. This tree removal work began earlier this week and will be followed by the planting of new trees.

Message from Chief Thorsen Regarding Slow Down Oakley! Program to Involve Increased Enforcement
|
Today, as your Chief of Police, the most common complaints I receive center around traffic matters. You guessed it, speeding cars, reckless driving, and unsafe practices on our roads. Many of those complaints are generated from neighborhoods. In response, we planning a new program, "SLOW DOWN Oakley!. There are two major components to the program: education and enforcement. The educational pieces are things like this article, other press releases, our traffic advisory trailers, and message trailers. All are designed to remind you to think about your driving habits and hopefully get you to slow down.
The second component, enforcement, is fairly obvious. I have directed the officers to enhance their efforts with respect to traffic enforcement. This includes randomly relieving some staff of their patrol duties and assigning them to focus solely on traffic enforcement. This is not a decision I take lightly. Again, my experience is that many of our own residents may receive citations. Please be aware, most officers hate giving tickets, particularly to their own residents. I remind them often, "you can write cites or you can write accident reports, but you will end up writing something." Enforcement, as unpleasant as it is for all involved, saves lives.

SLOW DOWN Oakley! Program- Input Needed
|
Is it really worth arriving at your destination 20 seconds earlier, by speeding through Oakley? Speeding puts everyone at risk and is a serious concern voiced often by Oakley residents. "When discussing issues of concern with City residents, the most common remark I hear is: 'People are driving too fast through my neighborhood,'" said Oakley Mayor Kevin Romick.
Mayor Romick continues, "In this fast pace world in which we live some drivers appear to view posted speed limits as merely a suggestion and not the law. California state law sets the speed limit in residential neighborhoods at 25 miles per hour; however, it is OK and best to drive slower than that. With the idea of getting drivers to slow down I took to the Internet to see what other communities have done or are doing and I found a number of Slow Down campaigns being run in various communities across the country."
