Oakley Family Shares What Happened the Day They Lost Their House to Fire
Time and time again we hear of heartwarming and miraculous stories of firefighters and other first responders rescuing our loved ones. Do you have a story you'd like to share, that demonstrates the great work done by those that provide us fire protection and emergency medical services? Email us at: info@ci.oakley.ca.us

Below is the story of the Partain Family
- by Barbara Santos

Maybe you were running errands on that Sunday afternoon and saw smoke billowing into the sky. Perhaps you pulled over to let a firetruck race past you to the scene of that fire on Sellers Avenue. Some of you were close enough to smell the bitter scent of burning wood and treasured personal possessions. But unless you knew the family, more than likely you thanked your lucky stars it wasn't your house and went on about your business. You didn't think to pick up a fire extinguisher at Home Depot that afternoon and no lessons were learned. But Kay Partain has so much to share about that day.

Gates Installed At One Park, With More On The Way
The Oakley Parks and Landscape Division will be installing parking lot barrier gates at several parks. This is being done in an effort to discourage people and activities that the City and residents do not want occurring in the Oakley public parks after they are closed, as well as to assist the Oakley Police Department in safety and enforcement issues. Crockett Park is the first park to have the gates installed, however, other parks that will see the gates installed soon include Laurel Ballfields Park, Creekside Park, and Summer Lake Park. The gates will be locked approximately one-half hour after each park has closed and opened in the morning by the Parks personnel.

"By eliminating the ability to park in the parking lot after hours, we hope to diminish the opportunity for inappropriate activities and helps to preserve our parks as what they should be, a place for play and healthy fun!" said Mayor Kevin Romick.

Police Chief Thorsen added that he hopes neighborhood volunteers will step forward to assist with locking and opening the gates.
Downtown Revitalization Project Continues Into Phase Two
Phase 1 of the Downtown Improvement Project was successfully completed with the construction of a new storm drain system, relocation of water utilities and the installation of new sanitary sewer laterals that will accommodate the future needs of Downtown Oakley and its developments. With the underground utility infrastructure in place, Phase 2 of the streetscape project is scheduled to start construction in early 2017 and be completed by fall 2017.

The streetscape project will renovate the area from Norcross Lane to 2nd Street by constructing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Main Street and Norcross Lane, new curb, gutter, and sidewalks, median islands, street trees and decorative street lighting.  In addition, a landscaped median island and a gateway monument will be installed on Main Street at 2nd Street to highlight the entrance to Downtown Oakley.  The final Phase of the improvements is the development on the north side of Main Street from 2nd Street to 5th Street. The development will be a mixed-use building consisting of retail on the first floor and offices on the second floor.  The new streetscape improvements and development project will significantly enhance the appearance of our Downtown and provide the community an attractive, safe and business-friendly Downtown for many years to come.
