The 4th Annual Heart of Oakley Festival drew a festive crowd this past Saturday with an estimated 4,500 people in attendance. There was something for everyone to enjoy.
New activities included the Historic Photo Exhibit that showcased photos of Oakley dating back to the 1930's. Additionally, guests were able to start researching their heritage through the "Family Discovery Activity". There were many cultural booths, each displaying items and hosting activities representative of a unique culture.
More than 60 vendors were on hand, along with several food vendors selling a wide variety of tasty dishes. Some guests opted to enjoy a glass of wine from locally grown grapes or a craft beer at the "Friends of Oakley" tent that benefited their Christmas Basket Program. The entertainment included a variety of cultural music and dancers in colorful attire. Children created lovely heart necklaces at the "arts & crafts" area or made their way through the giant obstacle course.
The City of Oakley wishes to thank volunteers from the Leadership Academy, the Oakley Youth Advisory Council, and volunteers from the community. We'd also like to thank the event sponsors: Oakley Disposal, The Press, The Friends of Oakley Community Foundation, You, Me, We = Oakley!, Black Bear Diner, and Element Power Systems for their support. New landscaping along Main Street just past Miguel Drive
|
One of the City of Oakley's goals is to keep City-owned parks and City maintained landscape areas in a beautiful and well-maintained condition, and the Parks and Landscape Division is regularly making enhancements throughout Oakley.
Some of the current upgrades include: In-fill of missing plants and shrubs along the north side of Monet Drive, in-fill of missing plants and shrubs on the west side of Live Oak Avenue, renovation of the landscape on the south side planters of Laurel Road between Main Street and Creekside Way, installation of a retaining wall and landscape next to the group picnic area at Creekside Park; along with some plant in-fill around the spray fountain. Also, Manresa Park will have much of its landscape renovated in early October; and most recently, the renovation was completed to the side landscape planters along Main Street, from just before Miguel Drive, to a little beyond Teakwood Drive.

New Cell Tower Disguised as Faux Water Tank
|
Over the past several weeks, you may have seen the progress on the new cell tower adjacent to Main Street just north of Empire Avenue. This project was originally submitted as a monopine tree, but instead the structure was revised to replicate a water tower. Several renditions of tank designs, colors, and logos were looked at. One addition to the design, not originally proposed, is the center pole, which functions as additional structure support. This support pole actually improves the design because most water towers include this pole as a conduit for the water. It enhances the design by making it appear more like a functioning water tower. The artist did a great job at capturing the antique look that was specifically requested by the City Council.
